Thinking Hard of Dropping Thunderbolt for iPhone 4 - Thunderbolt General

Ok guys, I have been an Android fan since I got my first OG Droid back in Dec '09. I really wanted this Thunderbolt since it was announced. First thing I did when I got it was test the 4G speed. Friggin unbelievable.
What else is unbelievable is the damn battery drain. I honestly cant stand it. My OG Droid was not this bad. It was bad, yes, but not like this. I am charging probably 2 times a day, with not that much use.
I downloaded the app to turn off 4G, but what good is that? I got the phone because of the 4G!!!! I turn off widgets. i turn off auto-sync. I did the whole battery charge thing, i.e. turn off after full charge, take battery out, etc.....
Then when charing the battery it takes like 4-5 times longer to charge the damn thing. what is up with that? my OG Droid took way less then half the time to get a full charge?
get this, the other night, right before bed I had a 1/2 charge on my battery. at home i leave wifi on because it was said that it is less of a battery drain then the 4g. well, when i woke up by phone wouldnt turn on at all. it was completely dead. the weird thing is, this isnt all the time. the battery has a life of its own!!!!!
now you will tell me to root it and try a rom with a custom kernel. anyone who roots knows that once you do it you are constantly looking for the perfect rom. and guess what, you will never find it. with my OG Droid i probably had a new rom every 2 weeks or so. i really dont want to keep doing that over and over.
so if anyone can convince me otherwise, give a good reason to not switch I am 99% sure that I am going to iphone 4.

Cool story bro. Enjoy your iPhone.

i guess i'm just frustrated, if you couldnet tell.
do you no have issues with your bolt
AisforAustin?

For me, it's all about if you want' Apple to control your technology needs and provide to you what THEY deem necessary and be part of the mindless clan (watch the movie Metropolis, the Giorgio Moroder 1984 version). Then iphone will do for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy taking on technology and thinking for youself, and yes, finding delight in changing your ROM every 2 weeks, and learning from others, and learning from your mistakes, then DROID is for you

I have been happy with my bolt. I came from the Droid X which had very good battery life for me. At first I was a bit iffy about my bolts life, but since I dont have 4G yet I turned off the radio and that helped. Now I am undervolted, bloat free, and monitoring all the **** that is running in the background. Battery lasts me a lot longer than I thought. When 4G comes to my area this year, I will lost a bit of that life, but I'm fine with that. You have to remember, these aren't just phones anymore. They are computers basically. You aren't going to get the same life on any of these smartphones as you would on a RAZR.

No offense but last time I checked you decided to jump ship on your own and go with a device that uses a new technology which I'm going to assume you were smart enough to know there would be some kinks and bugs to iron out...
You can't possibly expect 4G to be perfect and better on battery life from the get go, not to mention I turn my 4G off when I'm not using it and I can get a day and a half out of my phone no problem. Secondly why do you need 4G on when you're not even using it? How hard is it to flip the switch off when you're updating your twitter or facebook timeline? Do you really need 4G for a two second process on 3G? If you're surfing the internet fine, streaming video fine, but why is it necessary on simple quick tasks or during standby or sleep?
I'm just saying your expectations were probably too high of a premature technology from the get go, also you're utilizing something you don't need all of the time.

trust me i have been a loyal android fan but this experience is just killin me. i understand that this phone does more but come on, they really have to do something about the battery.
as for custom roms, i am good for it but as i said they all have ups and downs and i just dont want to keep messing with them once i find a major flaw, something of which all the custom roms have.
its not that i want to go and have apple dictate what i can and cant do with my phone. but you have to admit that google / manufacturers are letting all these developers do their work for them. they put out a 1/2 ass piece of work knowing that some developer on xda will come out with a root and a rom to fix their screw up.
i dont know, like i said, i'm just frustrated......

ANDROID is for you. It's not called the DROID OS, it's Android. I'd prefer not to have people start calling every android device a DROID like they call all MP3 players iPods even if they are not

I personally came from apple and would NEVER go back. Everything is so locked down. 1 app store with what apple wants in it. A new phone every year (which basically just matches what android has released years ago). I mean but yea battery go with iPhone since being locked down gives you better battery life.
Oh and personally with major usage my phone lasts at least 10 hours. Which I'm pretty sure is close to the iPhone.

in my opinion, this release of 4g from verizon and htc, is not the best that they could have done. most likely they held releasing the bolt because of the battery issue then got some backlash for constantly pushing it out. guess what, there is still a problem.
i just dont understand why i would need to constantly switch back and forth between 4g and 3g, just seems dumb to me. its like having high speed internet at home and switching between my fios and dialup based on what i need at the time. duh. this may be the fix for now, but come on.
plus, my battery issues have been with 4g off, auto-sync off, no widgets. and still have a drain.

I would atleast wait for the first update to see if they fix or improve upon some of these issues.

So let me get this straight, you hate the idea of using 3g on the TB, but like the idea of switching to a 3g phone?
-sent via 1.21 giggawatts of android.

First of all, I love my Thunderbolt and do not have battery issues. The only time the battery drains is when I use it what I would deem excessively throughout the day. Maybe you have a bad battery? I am not sure, but my phone gets me through a day, and even if it starts to run short, I can plug it in in my car on the way home, which is no inconvenience to me, and it has MORE than enough juice for the rest of the night. Something is definitely eating up your battery though, because the other night I went out drinking and came home drunk with only about 20% left on my battery from the days use. I was too buzzed to bother plugging in the phone, so it was the first time I went to bed with the phone unplugged. I woke up 12 hours later to around 10% battery life.
Also, if you want to go iPhone, then have fun. I gave up a long time ago trying to convince people one is better than the other. It is a pointless argument. I will tell you this though. I have some friends who have iPhone 4s through their job. This was where I first saw the iPhone 4 in the public. To begin with the screen is TINY! People can rave all they want about the retina display, but the small screen does not make it worth the higher resolution in my opinion. Also, if you think owning an iPhone is going to keep you from cord diving to charge your phone, think again. All those guys I know are constantly plugging their phone in throughout the day to get a little bit of a charge here and there so they make it through the day.
This is all just my opinions/experience though, and you have fun doing whatever you are going to do.

Yes, do they have a stable release for the Bolt now? If so I would love to try it out. Anyone have results on battery life with their latest release?

I'll tell you what guy, no one here really cares for your incessant whining, or your more than obvious trolling. We have better things to do with our days than listen to you whine and complain about a decision you made because you were too incompetent to wait and see reviews, or wait for the technology to mature.
Go to a Verizon store return your Thunderbolt get an iPhone 4 (Which is 9 months old) instead and then go whine in their forums about how you miss your 4.3inch touchscreen, your 4G speeds, your true multi-tasking, and custom roms.
Not to mention you can piss and moan with them when the iPhone 5 comes out with it's dual core processor and 4inch touchscreen.
If a mod could close down this troll thread that would be fantastic. On that note I bid you good day sir.

there does seem to be an issue with the stock ROM using 34mA of idle current from the 7 days of data i gathered on 2 stock units. where as other android phones pull 5mA of idle current. so i'm guessing that the thunderbolt delay in being released had something to do with this, and its STILL not quite on par with other android phones.
the option is to not use the stock TB rom, instead try cm7 or an aosp based ROM and see if the current draw returns to normal.

holy crap, DigitalDementia, did someone piss in your cheerios this morning?
I was going to say that you guys are turning me around, but you had nothing to do with it. My God, I feel sorry for you!
I will give CM7 a try tonight and see how it goes. If I am still having issues I'll get Verizon to give me a new battery as that could be it. I really didnt like the idea of going but am just getting tired of charging this thing so much.
I'll let you guys know how it goes and Digital, please take a chill pill. Dont want you to go postal or anything just because I was thinking of switching.

Is your charger working correctly? Try a different one. I had similar problems with another device draining while plugged in. It was a faulty charger. As for the battery life during the day, I have only had problems once with my TB.

My take as a new Thunderbolt owner

Look, this may not be a 28nm quad core phone with a 4.5" IPS 720p display, but we're getting there.
This is the best LTE phone still. Samsung has the AMOLED, but HTC gave this one the dual radio chipset and 4 antenna to give you the best reception, and since this phone is all about LTE, that's what makes it the best.
Battery life is the boon of LTE. You can get 3 hours of mobile hotspot if you're serious, but take today for example. Been at work for 4 hours with wifi on, and my battery still hasn't hit 80%.
Why is it I see everyone complain about the TB battery life?

Because its easy to drain. The phone has a smaller than average battery and the 4G tech is power hungry.
I've had the phone since release, and I'm always testing tweaks to improve the battery life. This phone is a beast, so it can tear through the stock battery, depending on your use. I only have experience with the TB on LTE though, so I'm not sure how it is for the Charge. I wouldn't trade the TB for anything else though.
been using the phone for about a week and battery life really depends on how its used. for example, on days im constantly texting and using apps, the battery lasts me only half a day. but yesterday i was heading into nyc and needed the phone to last me the whole day and once i limited my usage of it, it did last. the phone doesnt drain battery very fast unless its under intense usage.

The problem with that statement is we shouldn't be forced to limit our phone use to make it through a day. I am not advocating heavy usage...2 days worth of battery etc, but under normal daily conditions the battery should make it through a day...meaning a combination of all the general things done on a smartphone, and then kinda averaged out to make it thorugh 10 or 12 hours.
I know all the arguments about it all ways...all I am saying is a smartphone should make it through a normal day usage...almost as a standard.
I am still torn on the phone...but I have trouble making decisions for myself...so no suprise to me there...I like some of the features of the phone, but really am just blah on it. The power button is under sensitive, the volume buttons overly sensitive and IMO in the wrong spot...dislike the feel of it in my hand *(had it since Tuesday).
The only appealing factor to me is the fact that AOSP has made it (and HTC's recent annoucement regarding unlocked bootloaders...makes me want to buy into the cause....and is what is deterring me from other LTE phones (I dont know why I give it so much thought we won't have LTE here til sometime before December (hopefully)...I just was ready for an upgrade, figured why not get at least unlimited LTE til sometime in 2013 (at the least..)
I am leaning heavily on bring this back for the charge...or waiting til the bionic....though AOSP is a very important factor for me in choosing a phone
I haven't had my Thunderbolt for long, but I'm enjoying it so far. I've liked HTC phones since my days with WinMo, and the TB is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step up from the Incredible that I replaced. Digging the larger screen and LTE is fast in my area (Pittsburgh). I think it has a better feel than the Incredible, too. I didn't mind the tiered back, but it felt mostly plasticky. The TB definitely seems to be made out of higher-quality materials.
Battery life is it's weakness, though, but it's not a deal breaker. I can go from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed with it, for the most part (although I was able to go 2 days on a charge with the Incredible). I don't think I'm a particularly heavy user, though... an hour of talking, maybe a dozen texts, an hour on the internet, and sporadic checking of my email or Twitter. I keep my brightness set to about 30%, GPS and Bluetooth are off, all vibration is off, Twitter and email are set to update manually. Weather updates every three hours, contacts whenever.
So far I really like my TB. Battery life isn't the greatest but there are people working on that.
We weren't supposed to get 4G until Dec also but it showed up a few days ago.

Is not the phone in TB pretty crappy? It least on mine I get a ton of static when talking on the phone, and the volume is often either too loud or too soft, as if the range for volume control is not wide enough. It feels like my old clamshell from 3 years ago sounded much better.

I wouldn't say it's crappy. I'm not getting static or anything on it. But it does sound a little tinnier than my Incredible did.

This is the primary reason I hate my TB. I use Exchange and Gmail push mail and I have done everything I could to reduce battery life, incl. limiting background data like weather, but my phone still only last 5 hours under normal usage. My old iPhone 4, with the same usage, will last another 3 hors at the minimum.

Wow, 5 hours? That's crazy.
I use my phone to stream music for about 1 - 3 hours a day, sync google calendar, contacts, and gmail, and weather widget and I can get about 20 hours. If I start playing games or make long phone calls, that definitely makes a difference. But I can easily get 20 hours with moderate usage.
Have you thought or rooting and running a different ROM/kernel? I'm running Tesla Coil with leankernel and I love it!
edit: I also leave wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day. Wifi is set to sleep after 15 minutes. I'm also in a 4G area.
Well... that is the problem. I'm trying to use my TB professionally. I use it to join conf calls, always with my bluetooth headset, check and reply company emails, etc.
It just doesn't cut it. I always have to recharge it mid day. I never had to do the same with my BlackBerry Curve or Tmobile G2, specially the G2.
Problem is not always I have the option to recharge. And just the fact that I have to pay attention and monitor battery level is not good.
I need a phone that I can use A LOT for email (a lot!!!) and calls, several calls per day, with bluetooth. The TB is not this phone.
I've had mine sine thursday and the battery sucks. It reminds me of the original droid which I ultimately had to buy the Seido extended battery for to get the use I wanted out of it.
If you leave it in 3g it will go all day. On Friday my wife and I went looking at houses (we're shopping to buy) using my wifi xoom to do research while accessing data through the mobile hotspot. We drove around for about 4 hours and the TBolt still had 50%charge when I got home and I still had power when I put it on charge at bedtime. This was on 3g though.
Yesterday we did the same thing but I left 4G on. We drove off at about 2:00PM with a 90% charge on the phone. By 3:15 it was down to 39%. That's ridiculous, and the phone was crazy hot too.

Maybe, but it appears to have a pretty good signal. I haven't been watching that cloely but when I have looked it hasn't had below two bars. They claim the whole city is well covered and quite a bit of the countryside around it. Jacksonville Fl. may not have the *most* in population but it is the *biggest* city in the state.
The TB is Verizon's first CDMA+LTE phone & has its shortcomings, just like any other 1st-gen technology. The battery is only 1400mah, so don't expect it to last as long as 3G-only phones with similar battery size. You can extend battery life by disabling nonessential apps/services & turning off 4G when you don't need it. You can also flash a custom rom & battery sipping kernel, but a lot of ppl are not willing to go that far, especially with the recent bricking issues. The best way to ensure you have enough juice w/o recharging is to buy an extra battery & charger. You can get both from ebay for less than $20. Then you won't have to gimp your TB just to make it through the day

I said the phone on t-bolt was crappy. People who said the word crappy was inappropriate were correct, thanks for that, it is not crappy. But, coming off at&t iPhone I immediately noticed that t-bolt did not sound as good, and this he first time ever I noticed a difference in call sound when switching phones, so got a bit upsetting I guess. By now I am used to it and sounds ok to me.

When you realize that this phone is more powerful than the computer I took to college and it's running on a battery the size of a saltine cracker, it's only logical that it won't last all day if you're using it nonstop.
Older phones seemed to last forever because all it did was make calls and the occasional text. I had the original enV and if I sat around using AIM and playing what few games were available the battery drained like my bank account at a strip club. Android phones? Fugeddaboutit. We're talking, texting, streaming, listening, WiFi hotspotting, playing, and recording all day long and DON'T think we'll need a power boost? Puh-lease.
Buy a spare battery, keep a charger handy, or just use it more conservatively.

LG D-bag: "4g is killing the battery"

I went to the tmobile store I always go to earlier today, and was attempting to explain a certain issue I was having (something under the screen, at the very top, appears to have come unglued).
This tool informed me promptly that he was the LG rep for this store, and he immediately began defending the phone, despite the fact that I wasn't in there for any of the issues he began to explain away ( I didn't bring any issue up aside from the one I came in for). So here's his rundown of the issues, and how they'll deal with them. I only got into this at all because he began to list problems without my asking, saying after each that the effect on the phone is minimal for normal users
1) Battery issues: "It isn't that big a deal. You have to charge it twice instead of once. Not a huge issue for most. An extra car charge on the ride home from work"
2) When I answered that it sometimes only lasts 8-10 hours with minimal use: "Right, as I said, it'll take two charges instead of one. After work charge it up, then again when you go to sleep. Not really a big inconvenience"
3) Informed of the fact that I have had several instances where I was forced to do a factory reset because the phone got the sleep of death: "It's a known issue and it will be handled with an update this summer. No smartphone is ever perfect when it's released."
4) When I said I've had a g1 and a Nexus One and both had better battery life and no reboot issues: "It's a known fact that the G1 had one of the worst batteries ever in a smartphone, so I know that's not true. The Nexus One has horrendous signal problems. HTC always brings half baked products to the market. The Sensation will be the same thing"
5) I show him my screen problem again: "It's not a known issue, so we can't do an exchange."
6) Informed that every issue had to be unknown at some point: "Everything listed here is a known issue and will be fixed with a summer update. In the meantime, if you're still in the 14 day grace period, you can return the phone. If not, you'll have to deal with it. Or sell it and buy the Sensation (I brought up the Sensation earlier)"
7) What exactly is the issue? "The phone constantly runs 4g, or tries to find a 4g connection, even on wifi, which is draining the battery."
8) When I offer that the drivers are bad and the battery percentages are incorrect: "That's ridiculous. I own the phone. It's the 4g draining the battery. It's been confirmed. So you'll just have to deal with it"
9) The battery is red hot sometimes so tmobile sent me a new battery: "That won't work. It's not a battery issue. They shouldn't have sent you a battery"
I actually made him sound better than he was. Had you seen his face and heard the tone of his voice you would have smashed your phone into his mouth.
I would have returned it. You are within your exchange period and it is a product YOU bought. If it isn't up to standards then it should be replaced. I would have returned it on spite of him being a dbag and bought it somewhere else (another store).
The battery driver is wonked and fixable, the screen is hardware and, if bad, should be replaced.
I find it easier to just tell them something software wise (even if it isn't). Of course they'll try to factory reset it but say "been there done that, it still does it. I want to exchange it for another one". They can't test random events.
LG G2x - CM7 2.3.4
If you are within your exchange period there is no reason to even talk to a guy like that. Return it if you choose to. Exchange it if you prefer. Then feel free to bad mouth in front of other customers due to him arguing with a customer rather than looking for solutions. The reps in the store don't even have to listen to a darn thing that yahoo says.
I used to hate it when these tools were in mystores. Some of them would actually interfere if you were selling a different product.
G2x with CM7 and faux kernel
Actually it's the android OS that is killing the battery. Try comparing the battery life to a Windows Mobile OS phone and you'll notice that the Android OS eats up huge amounts of battery when not even activley using the handset and just on standby, while Windows mobile OS will conserve the battery and sustain battery life just as well as the "dumb phones" of 2007.
Well 4g is killing the battery. I'd say it's the biggest culprit here. Battery life between wifi and 4g is night and day. Did the douche say that part was being fixed?

He said in a summer update everything will be fixed. When I asked if he thinks it's okay that people might have to wait over three months for the phone to work properly, he said no phone is perfect out of the box, again. And reiterated that charging the phone "one extra time a day isn't going to kill anyone."
He interrupted me quite a bit too, which is the only reason I began to pester him in return. Normally I'm in and out of there with no trouble at all. I mean, it's not like I was trying to scam anyone, I had/have a legitimate concern.
Sorry for the rant last night...I was still fuming.

More proof it's the Android operating system that is the cause for battery drainage even when not activley using phone.

And as for the salesman that's giving you a hard time about returning it saying it's not a big deal recharging the battery twice, let him know that lithium batteries have a limited amount of recharge cycles and the more you recharge the batteries the faster you hit the battery limit and it's no longer good. I believe the average lithium battery is 500 recharge cycles.
what store is this and where? NExt time go in there get on his bad side start dissing lg enough to get him worked up then pull a fight-club on his ass!
get face to face with him and make it look like he pushed you into a display(make sure it breaks and makes lots of noise also best to do this on a sat afternoon with lots of people in there) then start screaming dont hurt me! Dont hurt me! ....voilA! now you can buy the tmo store from the lawsuit money and fire his ass!
Seriously people THEY DONT CARE. No big corporation gives a rats ass. WHat you should have done was video'd hiss ass saying all those slanderous things about htc and call them up and ask them if they are interested in lg sladering htc ...heh heh . I think its a culmination of all parties. android, 4g , bad drivers, etc.
Not enough R&D. and I loved my hd2 one of the best phones i Ever owned so f that guy.
I hate to say it but at this point I think the best we can do is gather as much evidence as possible. Document EVERYTHING your phone does. light bleed, reset etc. keep a daily log of your phones f-ups. IM sure a class action lawsuit will make lg change their mind. a 500$ phone that doesnt work the way its supposed to? Wait until the update comes out. who knows maybe itl fix everything(doubt it). after that people should seriously think about suing them. fix the phone or gives us 500$. Looks like apple has set the standard when somthing goes wrong:

The store is in Blackwood, NJ if anyone cares to visit. He has glasses, and Alex P Keaton hair parted in the middle, but he's going bald so the partline is like 2 inches wide.
Wifi- loose 10% battery in like 30-40 minutes of use.
4g- loose 10 % battery in 15 minutes. :-/

You do realize that the Android OS has more going on in the background that the iPhone and WIN**** 7, right? If you remove all of your widgets (that are updating themselves), turn off Facebook/Twitter sync and everything else that is automatically doing stuff in the background except for the essentials like email and calendar. Your Android device will have as good of battery as the others which consist of pages of icons and tiles. I only have 2 home screens with some icons on my G2X and if I take it off the charger at 5AM it still has 99-100 percent battery when I wake it for the first time at 7AM. When I get off work at 3PM after using my phone most of the day (moderate to heavy use) it is always reading above 30% which will last me until I go to bed at 11PM when I continue to use my phone with light use. People just don't understand how much battery certain features that are constantly updating themselves use. Just remember. You can't have the most powerful smart phone OS and the best battery too.

Is anyone else starting to hate this phone?

I had the Droid 1 & then the Droid 2 for the last 2 years. I never had a problem with either one, it made me want to get another Android and the D Charge seemed like the one I was waiting for. Let me just say first off.. the DC screen is amazing. For viewing video and pictures (also taking pictures) this phone blows everything I've ever seen out of the water. Also, it's light as hell, for being such a large screen I barely even notice it's in my pocket - incredible.
But.. when you turn this thing on it's loaded with bloatware, also samsung's touchwiz which absolutely blows. Everything is so awkward and bogged down (& not to mention ugly), who would ever want to use this?? Going through the system is not smooth and frankly almost 'slow.' Ok but this is an Android so we can fix this by using custom roms.. but why? Why would you package the phone in a manor that doesn't fully utilize its qualities? This is just going to turn off a portion of the average user from buying the phone and decrease its overall support. D1 & D2 (even with motoblur) never had this problem. I've used custom roms but if for some reason I was stuck with stock it still wouldn't be that bad.
Ok so I rooted. Granted this is very early in the development life of the phone, I had a terrible experience. I flashed combinations of every rom & kernel out to date (6/10/2011). I had no problems actually installing or flashing anything, it's not as simple as the moto droids but easy enough. This did fix some of the speed issue as far as moving through screens/apps but high end games and apps still don't' run well and in my experience I sacrificed major battery life (which is already terrible like every droid) to run the custom roms so it's not worth it yet.
This brings me to the processor... why should I have to download current games (Battleheart, Plants vs Zombies) on my D2 just to play them correctly?? I know the DC doesn't have a dual core processor but I feel like it should be able to handle current software with ease or at least keep up with a phone I got 2 YEARS AGO. In my opinion this takes away from the screen, because what's the point?
My latest gripe is just bias but I have a weird burn/water mark on my screen. Verizon is mailing me a replacement after my 1 hour battle at the retail store today. This is probably causing some of my negative outlook but I've been a happy verizon/droid user for the last 2 years - and after less than a month with this thing it's just been a nightmare.
I wanted to write this so people who are thinking about upgrading are fully educated. This is still probably the best 4g phone out on Verizon but I'm disappointed I didn't wait - if this changes I will update the post but I think a lot of people are too proud to admit they spent $300 and it's not the best thing since sliced bread.
I kinda feel like you Do thinking of trading fir a thunderbolt. .even since u flashed different Roms its still slow and lagy?
They aren't going to let me at this point, I had to fight tooth and nail for them to mail me a replacement Charge. I've used the Thunderbolt a good deal, it has its own problems and like I said the Charge is still probably the best LTE phone to date. Most of the frustration is probably that it's not much of an upgrade in a lot of areas from the Droid 2.
I actually love it now after ee4.. I was about to give up
Yea i feel the same coming from dx which i loved but wanted 4g..this phone is way slow compared to the dx I'm thinking bout a tb now only had this a week
r00t beer - Can you explain the screen burn-in issue a little more? Just curious...

If you notice, I had to make a smudge mark by wiping my thumb along the blotches otherwise you can't really see them. So the guy at Verizon would go in the back and clean it (then you can't see them), when he came out I would smudge it again to show him, we did this dance for a good 20 minutes.
His ingenious solution was for me to buy screen protectors.. Yes I realize me spending $15 vs you replacing a phone is a much better solution for you. "You won't be able to tell when the screen is on." That's not the point, my friend has a huge crack on his screen that you can't really see when the screen is on.. I paid for a new phone, not a new phone with some crazy marks on it, who knows if they'll grow into even bigger problems. Also I don't use screen protectors, and shouldn't have to - it takes away from the phone and I've never had a problem before.
I feel the same way man. Came from a Samsung Fascinate and this is just as fast and the screen is a tiny bit better. And both use Froyo. So I feel you on the spending $300 PLUS the 2yr contract and its definitely not even close to the day sliced bread was invented. 4G speeds are hella fast but that really only applies to downloads and tethering mostly. Dual core phones load web pages almost twice as fast because they can multitask the process therefore making web browsing a superb experience. As soon as the SGS2 comes to VZW, this thing is going up on eBay for whatever price it sells for and I won't look back.

This is one thing I haven't tried yet. Right now I'm just on ED 2 bloated stock everything so it'll stay ready to ship back. Once I get the replacement I'll keep testing what's out there and give the best input for improvement I can based on my limited knowledge.
My Charge was never slow, even stock. Although it was only stock for a few hours. I had some issues recently with the battery and wiped / reflashed the phone which led to bigger problems, but they were quickly resolved. My phone's battery is pretty decent now and it'll only get better with future updates and customization. I can play Battleheart so im not sure what problems you're having. Every game I've played ran perfectly smooth except for Sims 3 and NFS Shift which had graphical issues, but I couldn't care less about those two problems.
I score 1620 on quadrant using PBJT and AB v4.1.1 and never experience any lag. This thing flies and it's only going to get faster.
Also, if you think modding this is a pain, try modding some other phones like that god damn g2 haha. Flashing the Charge is cake, the problem is some people post awful instructions and Odin can be picky as hell with USB ports and computers in general, but it's actually pretty damn simple to root and whatnot.
P.s. the battery didn't drop at all while I wrote this post on my Charge The battery has only dropped from 54% to 33% in the past 2+ hours with pretty heavy use. The screen was on medium brightness to almost 100% brightness during that time, adjusting automatically.
The price of the phone didn't really bother me as I got it for $260 and it comes with a freaking 32gb as card. I don't buy phones every year either.
Also, I honestly do not care what the average phone user thinks about the Charge or any phone because their opinion may be complete horse crap. Being a techy nerd, I do not judge a phone based on its stock software because its not staying around for long. Yes, touchwiz isnbeyond lame, but I don't like that Blur or Sense crap either. As for bloatware, expect a ton of it in all future phones.
Yuck, that screen is pretty bad. Incredible that they gave you a hard time exchanging, whether it's visible with the screen on or not. They must waterboard the reps at Verizon now if they give in too quickly to an exchange request. Good they're sending you a new one.

That's good news, maybe once I flash again I will get better battery.
Battleheart runs fine but takes forever to load, which turns the screen off if you don't touch it so it's just annoying. It loads much faster on droid 2 - it's a game that having a big screen makes much better but I still prefer the quicker load times. PvZ does not run fine. I can't play the later levels it slows down too much then lags and you die. I haven't played it enough on D2 to compare. Also robo defense you can't play in high graphics mode.
The price doesn't bother me either really, I just wanted a clean screen. I get a discount through work on every phone except Iphones. So I paid $250 online vs $300 for the 32g iPhone not bad.
I don't think modding is a pain - especially for early stages. Just new things to learn.

BACKGROUND
Nexus One - the Bomb!
I had a Nexus One on T Mobile (my wife still has hers). This is the best phone I have ever owned. And, on Gingerbread it is buttery smooth and does nothing wrong.
T Mobile Coverage Sucks - Jump to Verizon
However, I needed a better network so I decided to go to Verizon.
At the same time, my business is Mac based and I loved my recently acquired iPad 2 so I decided to try an iPhone 4.
I loved the hardware and the smoothness of the system overall - typical very well done Apple product.
But alas, I couldn't stand it - IOS is simply missing too many things I have come to depend upon heavily with android - Notifications and Screen shortcuts are the main two I couldn't live without.
From IOS back to Android
Since I decided to dump the iPhone, which android phone? I considered:
X2
Thunderbolt
Charge
I went with the Charge because I thought LTE would eventually payoff and I thought I would like the screen size and brightness better than Thunderbolt plus I had heard the battery life was better on the Charge. And, I heard that Samsung was making nice phones (Nexus S, Fascination).
The Charge is a Disappointment - No - I am actually hating it
OK, there is a lot to like about the Charge, but in the end I can't stand the phone and I need to do something quick - my thoughts:
The good:
1) screen is gorgeous and bright - OK - this is nice, but doesn't even come close to making me like the phone given the fatal flaws I am about to detail below.
2) LTE is awesome when I can get to it - this is about 10% of the time given how I travel. However, I could easily use a 4G MIFI device to boost my browsing performance so 4G isn't critical at all for me at this point.
The Bad
OK, I haven't rooted yet and am considering gummy charged, but here is how it is today:
1) LAGINESS - this is the big deal for me.
Note: I have not rooted but I use either Launcher Pro or Go Launcher, which both help some. However, I use my phone a tremendous amount.
I am on the phone almost all the time. Many times I need to check something else (on the web, in my contacts, in a Google doc, etc., etc.,) while on a phone call. I get allot of stuff going just in the natural course of using my phone in my business - I am pretty sure I would be considered a heavy user.
With all of this - the phone slows down unbearably. I click on an app and it just (seems to) sit there forever before responding. I find myself using app killers to try to remedy these unbelievable slowdowns. I am coming from the Nexus One which beats the living snot out of the Charge in this regard. The Nexus One is very very quick and does not slow down the more you use it. I actually remember that this was kinda how the Nexus One used to respond in the early days before it made it to Froyo and now with Gingerbread the Nexus One is virtually head and shoulders above the dismal and pathetically performing Charge. The poor poor lag and delays launching apps is the reason I need to do something else quick.
2) BATTERY LIFE
Let me just say that If I didn't have the LAG problems I could live with the poor battery performance. However, here is my experience. I am only able to use 4G about 10% of the time so I know this isn't the main problem. I have GPS, Bluetooth and Wireless turned off unless I need it. I turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting unless I am using it out in the sunlight. With all of this management I find I have to make sure I keep the Charge plugged in to my car charger as much as I can manage it or I am going to find myself in trouble very quickly. It does not take allot to drain the Charge. It seems it can be at 90% and in an hour or so it is down to 50 or 60 - it is ridiculous. I cannot stop thinking about it and this is something that also make me hate my Charge - I shouldn't have to worry this much about a stupid ass phone - I have my business to attend to -not managing my phone so darn much!.
And, if this wasn't bad enough, recharging is the icing on the cake in the electrical compartment - it is slower than any device I have ever owned - it is ridiculous - it is like waiting for grass to grow while I am in desperate need to get things done!
CONCLUSION
If I could get the Nexus One working on Verizon I would do it in a second.
I think I would actually prefer the iPhone 4 over the Charge because the iPhone had better overall performance and the battery life was much much better. Plus, the iphone is the right size whereas the Charge is actually too big to use comfortably with one hand.
What am I going to do??? - I really don't know at this point - I don't see a good solution in front of me. I am very very disappointed with the Charge. If I knew for a fact Gummy Charged would help enough I would give it a go. I am way beyond my return period so I can't try out the Thunderbolt. I don't know - I really really miss my Nexus One. I would actually prefer the Nexus One on T Mobile given how bad the Charge sucks. Yes, even though I get way more dropped calls on T Mobile compared to Verizon and even though I am on 3G or 4G on verizon way way more than on T Mobile, I think I would still prefer the Nexus One.
Signed - Disappointed in Charge
I think this phone is great! Coming from a DX, when I first got this, I was not so pleased. I threw AB, did the voodoo lag fix, and now this is the best phone I've ever owned. Battery life kinda blows, but I knew this going into a LTE device. Besides nothing can beat a DX debloated gingerbread in the battery dept.
I'm sure once ee4 is installed, I'll love this phone even more, but we'll see.

Btw, to r00t beer. Must be something wrong with your phone. Uhhhm, comparing the DC to my DX, the DC is much faster playing high end games. Dungeon Defenders, XPlane, even plants vs zombies, which I don't consider high end, but tested anyway for you. Even load times are quicker on the DC.... so I donno what might be wrong with your phone.

Well we're both stuck so lets try to make the best of it lol. Good to know I'm not the only one in this boat.

How I got the G2X to work

With all the complaining about this phone flooding the forums, I thought I would post something positive that I found improves the phone. When I purchased this phone I knew nothing about it other then it had a nvidia dual core...I had to have it. 2 hours later while in the market it froze. Removed battery and never turned on again. So back to store to get another. :-( Needless to say phone has been fine since. However I had too had some of the ever popular issues. Decided to root it using one click root and installed nvflash. Backed up stock rom and flashed the gingerbread leaked rom. No more problems. I had a problem with the phone lagging bad while trying to type. Reinstalled Rom and ok now. I use antutu CPU master. I have setup the profiles to my like. I basically turned it down to 608mhz Max and while it is charging it is normal. Phone is not as snappy, but is still fast enough for normal use. This gave me a instant battery gain. Before I couldn't go more then 4 hours without a charger (pretty lame) now I have gone 12 hours of what I consider normal use. So...there is nothing more to complain about other then LG and Google need to get there sh__ together and give us some updates. Pretty bad when you have to do all this to get this phone to work.
Sick of heari.g about the sensation... i am thinking that before the g2x came out everyone thought it was going to solve the world. I think some people just need excuses to have the latest and greatest phones. Come on people the grass isn't always greener.

Not to rain on your parade, but I'd hardly call having to run a leaked buggy rom and then underclock your processor by about 40% just to get it to work properly positive news. That's just more information that confirms how substantial the current problems are. To underclock your phone almost 40% pretty much defeats the purpose of having a dual core phone. If you're going to do that you might as well have gotten a G2 or Nexus S or something. Also to have done all that and have still only gotten 12 hours of battery life isn't really that impressive. I'm not trying to be controversial, I'm just offering a bit of perspective. To lose almost half of your processing power just to match the battery life that other phones (ex. Sensation) can get out of the box using the full processor is definitely not a positive. Quite frankly I find that to be quite the opposite...meaning it's very negative. The grass may not always be greener on the other side, but at least for me, in my opinion...after having tried both sides of the grass..it's definitely greener. While that may change in the future after the cure-all update (the one everyone is praying actually fixes the phone), as of right now the reality of the situation is the G2X needs fixing before its ready for prime time. Until then it's just merely a phone with potential.

so very eloquently put...well I'll play along...then I guess that makes the G2X schizophrenic then huh? lol Nah but seriously though I'm not trying to hijack his thread into a "phone a is better than phone b" thread. My thing was I'm just pointing out that his "positive news", really isn't a positive at all..and quite frankly I find it to be an indictment of the device more than anything. So though his intent may have been positive news, it really delivered negative news.
+1.

There are no greatest and latest fone. Sensation will have its own problems. My g2x with EB1.04 GB, together with setcpu runs flawless, not a single problem. Thanks to the EB developer(s).
I unplug my phone at 8am and throw it on the charger at midnight. I use it pretty heavily throughout the day. I'm always sending corporate exchange emails, personal emails, SMS, twitter news links, and facebook.. along with wordfeud and kingdoms live a few times a day plus whatever game I find throughout the day.
Pretty happy with battery life. I'm running CM7 and stock kernel. Custom Kernels OC/UV typically have much better battery life. I also don't use SetCPU or anything special. Just stock CM7.
I've only had the G2X for a few days, but so far I've had no problems whatsoever. I checked for the backlight bleeding and luckily my phone doesn't have that issue. Everything else is working great and the phone is amazingly fast. If it helps the date on the box is 5/09/11

Ya I use my phone heavily and I go to sleep around 2am and I have around 30 percent by the end of the day. I'm running stock and I just froze all the T-Mobile apps.

If you download SetCPU or something else that can underclock with profiles, set it so it underclocks to the minimum when the screen is off. Your battery life will go through the roof.
I can go an entire day without a charge.
Something is wrong if you're only getting 4 hours at stock clocks.
Try using the battery calibration app, and then if you can swing the ~$3, get JuiceDefender.

You know your right. I am highly pissed with T-Mobile for not doing a _____ thing about this pos. It is ashame, because I swapped the galaxy s for this one. I have had many android phones and this is by far the worse case I've had. Really just trying to be patient and hope the update will solve issues. I wanted to post something that would possibly help someone else till this infamous update is released. In the phones defense, it is running two 1 gig cores, pretty impressive. There is no battery technology that would allow the capacity needed for this phone and maintain the slim form factor. I can understand that to a degree. I have seen the big battery for this phone and plan on purchasing it. I actually will like the fact that I'll have something to hold on too. My other point was "the latest and greatest phone" is not always the solution. On another note, T-Mobile has absolutely the worse customer service! Very displeased that I am going to be supporting them for 1yr and 11 months yet!

Searching for Service (aka why I'm ditching my Charge)

So I have two Samsung Droid Charges on my account.
One of them is completely stock, very minimal apps because it is a work phone and has to comply with provisioning standards for my company.
One is my personal phone, which I have rooted and have used various versions of Gummy and Humble, currently running Gummy 2.0 with the EP1Q radio.
While I absolutely love the screen and form-factor of this phone (even the hardware buttons), it seems to have a fatal flaw that I cannot abide. Verizon and Samsung both seem to be oblivious to the issue, but I have experienced it on both phones in several major markets (Atlanta, Charlotte, Norfolk, Richmond, etc).
Occasionally, my phone will simply lose all signal. It will display a 4G/3G/1x icon depending on my coverage area, but the bars will be empty with an "X" and I am unable to make phone calls or send text messages.
At other times, the data connection will simply disappear for no reason, even when I have solid coverage. There are areas where I know I have good service (my office, my home) and I simply lose data for no reason.
Each of these issues occurs randomly as I will have one phone sitting next to the other with signal or data, while the other one does not have it.
Sometimes switching airplane mode on/off will work, but usually I end up having to reboot the phone.
I am posting this to see if there are others experiencing these same issues because Verizon is giving me some push back, insisting that I go through the replacement process (receive a refurb Charge), despite the fact that one of the phones is already a replacement and one was a retail unit off the shelf, indicating the issue is - if not widespread - certainly not isolated.
If there are more people notifying Verizon, they may make it easier for those of us who experience these issues and cannot wait for a software update for which Samsung is notoriously slow at releasing.
(Side Note: The issue seems to be way worse in 3G coverage areas, but it also happens in 4G areas.)
its a known bug with the modems a lot of people have data drop problems. hopefully when GB official is released it will have a better modem

We would've had GB a LONG time ago if Sammy wasn't fiddling around with the stupid Galaxy S2. They neglect every other phone on their lineup just because the Galaxy S2 sold so well.
I had 'spotty coverage' with my Charge with some of the older ROMs, however, since I have been on EP1Q (Stock debloated) I have had so few issues that I am perfectly happy to use the ROM as my daily driver.
The radio is fantastic as are my DL speeds. Auto brightness works again as well as the hardware key backlights. The best part of the ROM is the absolutely fantastic battery life! I take my phone off the charger at about 7am every morning and still have 50% left on the battery after almost 15 hours. Throughout that time, I send and recieve alot of email and text messages, make several short calls to colleagues and of course there is the innevitable round of Angry Birds while on the can.
All in all, I love this device!!!
~E~
It happens to all of us. Go try getting a new SIM.

I had the problem with my Thunderbolt I bought on the first day fought with version constantly they replaced 4 of them before they sent me this charge, and guess what same issues. I am not a expert but I believe it's the network. Lte has problems and Verizon isn't saying anything for fear of looking bad. They have invested their future in it but there are issues and holding signal is one of them. Battery life is another that has to improve Apple can't release a phone until this is worked out unlike android you can't pop another battery in after 6 hours. BTW 3g had the same issues in the beginning

I was having the same problem as you. Would go from 3g to 1x to nothing. Sometimes it would return in a few seconds sometime i would have to toggle data on/off/on or airplane mode and sometimes it would take a full rebot to fix the problem. I also would lose voice too but didnt happen no where near as often.
Ive had the problems from day one on stock non rooted EE4 and all the rooted roms ive ran. I didnt want to replace my phone with a recert phone so i got the verizon tech to just replace my sim card. Also updated my modem to the newest one the day after i got the new sim card.
Ive been running the new GC 2.0 FE for almost a week, along with a new Sim card and updated modems and have yet to lose voice or data at all.
As another suggested try getting verizon to replace your sim and/or reflash the newest modem. Hope that helps you it did for me.
give the EP1Q modem a try, my signal has improved immensely in the few crappy areas around here
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm already on my second SIM card and I've experienced the issue on both my stock Charge and my Charge that has been on Gingerbread (currently GC 2.0) and has the EP1Q radio.
I'm just going to head up to VZW next week, show them the threads and hopefully have one of the phones flip out while I'm there and not leave until they either offer a lateral replacement or give me a real time frame for a software fix.

Actually, it's not. My wife has an iPhone and the battery lasts FOREVER in that damn thing. It irritates the hell out of me.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my gummy charge and would never buy an iPhone but her battery life is WAY WAY better than any Droid phone. Sure, you can't replace the battery but hers never fails to make it through a day of HEAVY use anyway so she doesn't care.......

Some of my friends have iPhones too (the dumb ones ) and the only thing im jealous of is the damn battery life. It has a 1420mah battery and easily lasts twice as long as an android phone. The iPod Touch (i happen to have a 3rd gen from before i got an android phone) lasts for a whole week with a 950 mah battery. i want you to get that galaxy player wifi and try getting that thing to last a whole week. I know that there are much more proccesses running in android and real multitasking (not the **** apple feeds to there customers on a white pretty boxed platter) but still, thats how they get that battery life, by limiting functionality. I am not pro apple or completely anti-apple, more pro android and google , but one thing apple has got in the bag is battery life.
An Android device can run just as long if not longer than an iPhone, it simply depends on usage. I'm pretty sure the way Android handles multitasking compared to iOS and push notifications play a role, too.
Regardless, my Nook Color can idle for a couple of weeks with a custom Froyo ROM and kernel. My Droid Charge has lasted me over a day with moderate usage, easily. With heavy use, I get 12-16 hours pretty easily. If I turn off data completely and only use my phone for texting and voice calls, the phone lasts two days, no problem.
Usage is key, and is often misunderstood and judged improperly/subjectively.
But at the end of the day. My droid charge is out of battery and my girls iphone is at 70 percent. I remember reading somewhere that apple has special patented battery technology too. Android needs some special battery technology. I will gladly pay more for a better product.

It's because the iPhone doesn't have that obnoxious hog we call the LTE radio. If you set your phone to CDMA(it disables 4g) you can effectively double your battery life. I disable mine if I'm going somewhere and I know I won't be back in 10+ hours. Or if I'm going somewhere that doesn't have 4g, the battery life with 3g only is CRAZY.

You fail to describe how you and your "girl" use the phone. My money says that you use your phone more heavily than she does. As another poster mentioned, how you use the phone and what apps you are running make a big difference. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the results were quite a bit different if ya'll switched phones for a day, but continued using them the way you would normally use your phones.
You can't compare your gfs iphone to your Charge if you're using the LTE modem. Completely different animals. Once iphones have lte, then you can compare away.
Besides I get incredible battery life from my Charge. I can easily last 20 hrs.
Back to topic however, yes I too have problems with connectivity regardless of Roms or modems I've flashed. If I had to guess, I would say its a network issue with LTE phones... anybody know if the Revolution has similar problems? I believe the TBolt does as someone mentioned earlier, but nobody seems to talk about the Revolution.

Well just to update, I had a pretty serious situation that was caused by this issue. Verizon is unable to provide a firm timeline for an update and won't even confirm that any forthcoming updates will resolve the issue (which they have not yet officially recognized).
That said, the situation I encountered was significant enough that they are issuing a credit toward my bill and the GM of my local corporate store is working on having my phones replaced.
As much as I absolutely love this phone (as one user said in another thread, SAMOLED+ is like the heroin of phone displays), having a phone that is unreliable in important or emergency situations is just absolutely not acceptable to me.
If they do allow me to change phones, I will do my best to move to another 4G phone (not the tbolt obviously) and I will report back on whether or not it appears to be a network issue.
You will find most of your problems will follow you from one 4g phone to another. There are already a few grumblings in the bionic forums radio staying locked on and battery and that is a huge battery

I don't think it's necessarily a DC problem. Here lately my fascinate has been getting 1x locks and my DC has been doing that too. Maybe it's a network issue?
