Look, this may not be a 28nm quad core phone with a 4.5" IPS 720p display, but we're getting there.
This is the best LTE phone still. Samsung has the AMOLED, but HTC gave this one the dual radio chipset and 4 antenna to give you the best reception, and since this phone is all about LTE, that's what makes it the best.
Battery life is the boon of LTE. You can get 3 hours of mobile hotspot if you're serious, but take today for example. Been at work for 4 hours with wifi on, and my battery still hasn't hit 80%.

Because its easy to drain. The phone has a smaller than average battery and the 4G tech is power hungry.
I've had the phone since release, and I'm always testing tweaks to improve the battery life. This phone is a beast, so it can tear through the stock battery, depending on your use. I only have experience with the TB on LTE though, so I'm not sure how it is for the Charge. I wouldn't trade the TB for anything else though.

The problem with that statement is we shouldn't be forced to limit our phone use to make it through a day. I am not advocating heavy usage...2 days worth of battery etc, but under normal daily conditions the battery should make it through a day...meaning a combination of all the general things done on a smartphone, and then kinda averaged out to make it thorugh 10 or 12 hours.
I know all the arguments about it all ways...all I am saying is a smartphone should make it through a normal day usage...almost as a standard.
I am still torn on the phone...but I have trouble making decisions for myself...so no suprise to me there...I like some of the features of the phone, but really am just blah on it. The power button is under sensitive, the volume buttons overly sensitive and IMO in the wrong spot...dislike the feel of it in my hand *(had it since Tuesday).
The only appealing factor to me is the fact that AOSP has made it (and HTC's recent annoucement regarding unlocked bootloaders...makes me want to buy into the cause....and is what is deterring me from other LTE phones (I dont know why I give it so much thought we won't have LTE here til sometime before December (hopefully)...I just was ready for an upgrade, figured why not get at least unlimited LTE til sometime in 2013 (at the least..)
I am leaning heavily on bring this back for the charge...or waiting til the bionic....though AOSP is a very important factor for me in choosing a phone
I haven't had my Thunderbolt for long, but I'm enjoying it so far. I've liked HTC phones since my days with WinMo, and the TB is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step up from the Incredible that I replaced. Digging the larger screen and LTE is fast in my area (Pittsburgh). I think it has a better feel than the Incredible, too. I didn't mind the tiered back, but it felt mostly plasticky. The TB definitely seems to be made out of higher-quality materials.
Battery life is it's weakness, though, but it's not a deal breaker. I can go from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed with it, for the most part (although I was able to go 2 days on a charge with the Incredible). I don't think I'm a particularly heavy user, though... an hour of talking, maybe a dozen texts, an hour on the internet, and sporadic checking of my email or Twitter. I keep my brightness set to about 30%, GPS and Bluetooth are off, all vibration is off, Twitter and email are set to update manually. Weather updates every three hours, contacts whenever.
So far I really like my TB. Battery life isn't the greatest but there are people working on that.
We weren't supposed to get 4G until Dec also but it showed up a few days ago.

Is not the phone in TB pretty crappy? It least on mine I get a ton of static when talking on the phone, and the volume is often either too loud or too soft, as if the range for volume control is not wide enough. It feels like my old clamshell from 3 years ago sounded much better.

I wouldn't say it's crappy. I'm not getting static or anything on it. But it does sound a little tinnier than my Incredible did.

This is the primary reason I hate my TB. I use Exchange and Gmail push mail and I have done everything I could to reduce battery life, incl. limiting background data like weather, but my phone still only last 5 hours under normal usage. My old iPhone 4, with the same usage, will last another 3 hors at the minimum.

Wow, 5 hours? That's crazy.
I use my phone to stream music for about 1 - 3 hours a day, sync google calendar, contacts, and gmail, and weather widget and I can get about 20 hours. If I start playing games or make long phone calls, that definitely makes a difference. But I can easily get 20 hours with moderate usage.
Have you thought or rooting and running a different ROM/kernel? I'm running Tesla Coil with leankernel and I love it!
edit: I also leave wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day. Wifi is set to sleep after 15 minutes. I'm also in a 4G area.
Well... that is the problem. I'm trying to use my TB professionally. I use it to join conf calls, always with my bluetooth headset, check and reply company emails, etc.
It just doesn't cut it. I always have to recharge it mid day. I never had to do the same with my BlackBerry Curve or Tmobile G2, specially the G2.
Problem is not always I have the option to recharge. And just the fact that I have to pay attention and monitor battery level is not good.
I need a phone that I can use A LOT for email (a lot!!!) and calls, several calls per day, with bluetooth. The TB is not this phone.
I've had mine sine thursday and the battery sucks. It reminds me of the original droid which I ultimately had to buy the Seido extended battery for to get the use I wanted out of it.
If you leave it in 3g it will go all day. On Friday my wife and I went looking at houses (we're shopping to buy) using my wifi xoom to do research while accessing data through the mobile hotspot. We drove around for about 4 hours and the TBolt still had 50%charge when I got home and I still had power when I put it on charge at bedtime. This was on 3g though.
Yesterday we did the same thing but I left 4G on. We drove off at about 2:00PM with a 90% charge on the phone. By 3:15 it was down to 39%. That's ridiculous, and the phone was crazy hot too.

You are probably in a sketchy 4g area and probably used more data. Both will make a huge difference in battery life.

Maybe, but it appears to have a pretty good signal. I haven't been watching that cloely but when I have looked it hasn't had below two bars. They claim the whole city is well covered and quite a bit of the countryside around it. Jacksonville Fl. may not have the *most* in population but it is the *biggest* city in the state.
The TB is Verizon's first CDMA+LTE phone & has its shortcomings, just like any other 1st-gen technology. The battery is only 1400mah, so don't expect it to last as long as 3G-only phones with similar battery size. You can extend battery life by disabling nonessential apps/services & turning off 4G when you don't need it. You can also flash a custom rom & battery sipping kernel, but a lot of ppl are not willing to go that far, especially with the recent bricking issues. The best way to ensure you have enough juice w/o recharging is to buy an extra battery & charger. You can get both from ebay for less than $20. Then you won't have to gimp your TB just to make it through the day

I said the phone on t-bolt was crappy. People who said the word crappy was inappropriate were correct, thanks for that, it is not crappy. But, coming off at&t iPhone I immediately noticed that t-bolt did not sound as good, and this he first time ever I noticed a difference in call sound when switching phones, so got a bit upsetting I guess. By now I am used to it and sounds ok to me.

When you realize that this phone is more powerful than the computer I took to college and it's running on a battery the size of a saltine cracker, it's only logical that it won't last all day if you're using it nonstop.
Older phones seemed to last forever because all it did was make calls and the occasional text. I had the original enV and if I sat around using AIM and playing what few games were available the battery drained like my bank account at a strip club. Android phones? Fugeddaboutit. We're talking, texting, streaming, listening, WiFi hotspotting, playing, and recording all day long and DON'T think we'll need a power boost? Puh-lease.
Buy a spare battery, keep a charger handy, or just use it more conservatively.

So, I was well informed from many different sources that the biggest drawback to the Thunderbolt was the horrendous battery life (people complaining in the 4 hour range). I came from a Samsung Fascinate, which would most of the time get me through the day, but just barely, and the Battery Use was almost always 70-80% screen (even at the lowest brightness). I primarily got the Thunderbolt for the possibility of 4G tethering, so the first thing I did was buy an external battery charger pack (extended battery was sold out).
Well, I've had it for a few days now and despite geeking out on the phone, tethering whenever I can, using it probably more than my Fascinate, I haven't had any issues with battery. I pulled it off charge about 8am this morning, it's currently 9:45pm, I've been using it pretty heavily all day, tethering on the train to work, using it at work, and using it the whole train ride home, and it's currently at 33% battery. 6:18:00 Awake time. Where is this horrendous battery life I heard about?
I'm not using any battery saving utilities (Juice defender etc), have it set to Auto Brightness, just letting it be on WiFi when WiFi is available. I'm using the bone stock HTC Android 2.2 that came with it, not root etc.
So far this phone has much better battery life than my Fascinate and I'm pretty impressed, especially since I believe it has a slightly smaller battery. If I check battery use today, it's 59% Display, with the next highest being 9% Cell Standby.
I haven't used it as a 4G hotspot for more than maybe 30 minutes at a time, but even then it doesn't seem to die too quickly. Am I just missing something that other people are doing that drains their batteries like crazy or is it just that I'm careful about not using stuff the indiscriminately uses 4G for no reason? (I removed all the auto updating widgets like the Friend Feed etc).
Anyone else had a similar experience?

JK... the battery is ok for me I haven't had it die on me yet but when ever I drive it goes in the charger so I'm sure that adds up.

Seriously though. Go to any one of the Thunderbolt forums or read any Thunderbolt review and you'll see the battery being discussed prominently. There is definitely an issue with it. Who knows what it is though..
The thing that really bothers me is the battery isnt consistently bad. Like the last two days Ive gotten 24 hours of use out of my phone. Normally that's unheard of.. but next week something will happen and it will be back to being dead within 6-8 hours with barely any use.
You are correct that this issue is oft-cited in regards to the TB. However, I think the 4 hour data points may be slightly exaggerated. I wound up buying the oem extended battery because I wasn't make it past 6.5 hours with regular use. I travel pretty far to get to work every day, switching between many towers over the course of my commute, constantly going from 4g to 3g to 1x and back. Besides the screen (which will be the biggest battery drain on any phone with a modern touchscreen) data should be your next highest drain, and the biggest variable you are capable of tweaking to change your battery performance. My 6.5 hour experience was with a pretty abusive data usage scenario, and I don't see many people inflicting much more upon the battery in actual, real-world use. That said, with the extended battery, the TB has the best battery life of any phone I have owned in the last five years, and I couldn't be happier.
I'm getting about 12 hours with pretty heavy use. Running BAMF 1.6.2 with kernel overclocked. I'm pretty happy with battery life...it's just as good as it was on my droid incredible.
I have learned thru experience that all HTC phones with 4.3 inches screens are bad at battery life. When I say bad, that's comparing it to a smaller less powerful device. But take in account all it does and to me battery is ok. I mean the HD2, and EVO when I owned them were battery hogs. But I always had a charge. Ppl want bigger and faster phones,Well there's a trade off until battery technology catches up, the bigger phones will consume more battery. Its like saying I want a better car more sporty and trendy but I don't want to pay that much. Not goin to happen.
With just 3G available to me and using everything stock...I get slightly better battery life than I did with my incredible that was on CM7. Compared to a stock incredible, much better. I'm a bit scared for when I do get 4G seeing all the posts though =)
Rooting gave me an extra 2% per hour usage. I can go 15 hours and still have 40% left on my battery. I'm happy with this battery.
Thunderbolt has better battery life than my Samsung Epic had. Stock, my battery wasnt all that great. However, changing some settings and finding a suitable kernel has helped with my battery life.
I have had the same experience. Coming from a Fascinate, the Thunderbolt is so much better on battery life. Mind you, I do not live in an LTE area. This is what I do:
- Juice Defender (Balanced settings)
- Brightness - half way
- GPS only on when I need it
- Wifi on almost 100% of the time (at home and work I use only wifi)
- Non-Rooted
I even have 100+ apps installed including leaving Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger on almost 24/7. I have about 8 or 9 widgets as well. Most that pull info.
The terrible battery life comes when the phone tries to hold a bad 4g signal drains the battery at an insane amount. If you're in strong signal expect much better battery life but because 4g is so new I expect a lot of people to be in areas with low 4g signal as Verizon has not even turned up 85-90% of the towers past 45% power.
I've had the TB for 3 days now and am coming from a rooted Eris (running xtr rom). I have noticed that with the same amount of usage I am also getting better battery life on the stock TB than I did on my Eris. I am in an area that does not have 4G so I have that turned off.

where did you get this info about the power of the towers? btw what power do they normally work at? 100W?

I'd love to see some sources backing this info up.
When I bought my TB I left the store with the extended battery in. The battery easily lasts me all day. After reading all the complaints about how bad the stock battery is I decided to try using it and I'm actually surprised by how long it lasts. I was expecting much worse. It's easily lasted me 8-12 hours with my normal everyday use. I'm going to stick to the stock battery from now on. I was getting annoyed by the heft and bulkiness of the extended battery. My phone feels so sleek with the stock one.
Yeah, I'm with the "it's just you" crowd.
Pretty bad battery life for me here in NYC (plenty of good 4G around).
Not a heavy data user (less than 20min browsing per day).
Not a lot of long calls.
Accounts update once every hour (FB, 2 email accounts).
Brightness at min.
No video playing, no music playing.
No speakerphone used.
Rooted, BAMF 1.3.2
GPS and WiFi rarely on at all.
I'm lucky, --LUCKY--, if I get like 6 hours out of a fully charged battery.

Just curious, why are you still using BAMF 1.3.2?
running Bamf 1.6.1 and Imoseyon Lean Kernal set at 1.4Ghz with SetCPU on Smartass, along with ATK set to kill every 30 mins(oh I know they are the devil, yet my battery life is always better with one, so no comments about how they are bad.) I also always have 4G on, and usually fluctuate between -82 to -94dB in signal strength, and wifi is never on, as my home network is strained enough as it is. GPS is always off unless I need it.
I also use WPClock Live Wallpaper at the same time.
Yesterday I was at 18% with 2 days since last plugged in.
Of course I also calibrated my battery, after flashing Bamf 1.6.1.
I use my phone alot for facebook, angry birds, browsing the web and a crap ton of texting, I probably hit near 1000 text a month, I know that isn't what the high school brats are pulling, but still, for me, that is insane.
On my Evo 4G, with 4G off, I could hit 3 days running CM7 underclocked to 750Mhz max. That was with a bigger battery as well.
I am very exited for CM7 to go into a beta, or nightly stage, and the kinks worked out, as I am sure with 4G on I can hit near 3 days with the Thunderbolt as well.

Overall battery life is a lot better than my cm7 Incredible, and on mostly standby it lasted quite awhile before I had to charge it (I couldn't use it for a few days because vzw wonked up on activating my TB somehow), so it lasted almost 3 days with only occasional data use/seeing if the phone was working (I couldn't send texts or make/receive calls, but my data was working)

I know, I am a lazy ass, haha.
I have a Droid Inc 2, but I wanted to switch to the Tbolt, but have heard the battery is awful. As of right now I am in a 3G only area, but will have 4G soon. I see the Tbolt has a 1400mah battery while the Droid Inc 2 has a 1450Mah battery, so would the difference on 3G be that much??
My battery life is good...usually get 2 or 3 days on a full charge ..push exchange mail. Gmail. Friendstream.phone calls texts etc?

On 3g the battery is not that bad. I don't have 4g where Im at and when I was on a froyo rom the battery would last all day no problems.
When I go into SanFran I get 4g and it seems to way more battery if Im using the phone but it doesn't seem too bad. I just have to keep a charger handy butt that doesn't bother me.
Benefits of the thunderbolt are a bigger screen (part of the battery "problem"), 4g radio, and the development is here unlike with the dInc2.
Stock for stock I think the thunderbolt still wins for me. I was thinking about getting my wife a dInc2 but the lack of a development community kills it for me. Maybe it will pick up at some point but IMO its a step backwards for Verizon to release new phones without 4g.
If youre not going to root and stuff then it's not such an easy choice. If you are then IMO the choice is clear, get a thunderbolt.

Yes, on 3G or WIFI the battery life is solid. I get a full day easily with gmail constantly syncing, gtalk on constantly and widgets such as beautiful widgets, calendar, twitter and face-book on constantly. Also, I work in a hospital and access patient data frequently on my phone. This is via the internet and data is refreshed at each access (50+ times per day). BTWI take the phone off the charger at 0530 and don't get home till 1930, and still have some juice left for the ride home. And I don't use any battery savers, or task killers.
But when I turn the 4G radio on, and there is frequent hand-off from 4G to 3G, the battery is dead in 6 hrs with the use stated above.
That said, when I go into the city where 4G is very strong and consistent, I can get a full day (8-10 hrs on 4G).
What I suspect happened when people first got the phone, is that they were so enamored with it; speed, screen, etc...(myself included), that the battery took huge hits, and everyone cried at how terrible the battery life was.
As with everything, wait for the dust to settle and you find the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Nevertheless, I still would like an 1800mah battery that fits the standard door.
Until 4G is fully developed in your area this phone isn't worth it. I've been through two of them that are frequently heating up when they're doing nothing but sitting in my pocket with auto sync off, brightness as low as possible, no notification LED, etc. It's pathetic. It over heats and drains into yellow by noon. 4G is amazingly fast, but since the outages it hasn't been the same. It comes and goes in areas where it used to be four bars.
If you're not in a 4G area then you should be good. Those of us with 4G are having a tougher time with battery. If I leave 4G running then my battery will die in less than 6 hours if with light use.
I most often turn off my mobile network though, letting me get around 8-10 hours.
On 3G, with the normal battery, it was much better than my old Fascinate.
With LTE, I went to the extended battery, and I struggle to get through the day on moderate-heavy use. (On LTE with the Regular battery your toast).
BTW, I am unrooted and am using Juice Defender.
There are apps on the Market which allow you to switch between 3G and 4G. I leave my Thunderbolt on 3G unless I am checking the internet, Facebook or Twitter. I usually get a full day on the stock battery. That is better than my battery usage on the LG Ally.
Well with the bamf gb remix i get 6 hrs full power all the time,everything possible running, slacker,maps,fb mail all syncin 10min,thats about 2 hrs better than my imagio, about 12hrs with just moderate use,i think thats pretty good.

I live in a 3g area but I'm only a few miles away from 4g. As long as I'm in a 3g area my battery is good. But as soon as I enter a 4g area its not so good. It doesn't bother me too much since I have a car charger and have about ten usb cables and micro usb chargers laying around. But I probably will invest in an extended battery once VZW deploy 4g in my area a bit more.
Some good tips to get more out of the battery are...
1. For a good 10 - 15 days be sure to drain the battery all the way and then fully charge it.
2. When the phone is fully charged remove it from the charger. You may notice that if you leave it on the charger for a while after its fully charged it will go from 100% to 97% usually within minutes.
3. Screen protectors decrease the battery life due to holding heat into the phone.

You sure about that last one? I don't think screen protectors cause excess heat. Good tips otherwise.
I came from the Droid 1 and I think that the battery life is about the same. I have no complaints about it. I do live in a 3G area though.
Why do you suggest to fully charge and drain the battery for 10 - 15 days? I deained the battery fully a couple of times when I just got the phone. Do you think I should repeat the procedure?

fully draining the battery shortens its life span. and once it reaches 100% charge, it stops charging and begins to drain--taking it off/leaving it on are the same.
These batteries don't need to be "conditioned" by fully cycling them. All that'll do is help calibrate your gauge.

I trialed the DInc2 for 2 weeks and switched to the Thunderbolt while my wife stuck with her DInc2, after rooting and installing Das Bamf 1.6.3 remix with adrynalyne's kernel, I easily make it through the day with moderate usage (autosync on, several hours of gaming, hundreds of txt, hour of phone calls) on 3g/wifi. DInc2 will get a couple extra hours in a day with the same usage, but you get a phone with 4g capability for the future, a larger screen, and all the support of the devs here for your rooted device while my wife's waiting for her DInc2 to still be rooted.
Best thing to do is just buy some cheap ebay batteries. I use those and I keep a few in my pocket just in case

Sounds like you have got a rogue app you need to take care of, more so than the phone being bad.
How is the battery life on the MT? If it's poor (stock), have you found a good utility app to help it last longer?
I usually get about 24 hours of battery life on mine. I have gps turned off most of the time and I'm on wifi a lot with light to moderate usage. I did notice that if I have the GPS on, that the battery does go down much quicker. I assume that's because it keeps trying to get a location even when I'm indoors and it's having a hard time.
Although, I've read a lot of people complain about poor battery life so YMMV.
It depends greatly on whether data is working or not. Usually, I'll have around 90% battery 2 hours into the day. But if data isn't working, like today, I'll go down to 80% in as little as 20 minutes.
Usually, I'll have around 20% after 12 hours. Been giving it a charge in the afternoon, and it hasn't been an issue.
I use Juice defender, and it does wonders for my battery life.
I've found battery life to be comparable to other Android devices; with effective battery management, mine gets me through the work day. My wife has the Optimus V and I have coworkers, one with a Droid X, the other with an Evo; my battery life is no better and no worse than any of those devices. With any smartphone you're going to have to turn off unused radios and turn down screen brightness if you're going to be away from a charger for a long period of time.

Heavy use is the real killer on the Triumph. With just the screen on (minimal brightness) and network on (bad coverage), I can drain the battery by about 1% every minute. And that's no exaggeration -- Battery Indicator Pro keeps track for me. I'm working on a spreadsheet to help chart battery drain during different scenarios.

Edit: Purchased at Bestbuy, and actually ran into Sprint rep who had one I could look at. We exchanged a few geek tips.
One thing I noticed: I have an LG brand microUSB charger, and the phone would not charge from it when turned on, tho it would charge when turned off. I had an older Motorola microUSB charger and it works fine either phone on or off.
I am getting a whole day of battery life with heavy use. I turned off the background data and turned off all sync. Using the email client with one hour pull with imap instead of the gmail client... Couldn't be happier with the phone...

Yeah, I have also found that turning off sync can get you through the day with less battery used.
Depending on how much I use the Triumph, I can run the battery down in about 2-3 hours (with constant use) or have it run all day long and in to the next day (if I only use it for 1 or 2 short calls during the day.)

Battery life is HORRENDOUS. Not sure how anyone can possibly say its "OK". Sure if you are sitting at home or in the office all day, You can continually have it plugged in and charged. My lighter socket doesn't work in my car ATM so thank GOD I don't drive a lot, and for long periods, I would be SCREWED.
Essentially yes if you turn off GPS, Wi-Fi, Syncing your emails and such, etc etc, then your battery will last longer. But what good is the phone then? I have owned many other androids and they worked for almost a full day with moderate usage with ALL of those things turned on and sync'ing (including Latitude and automatic check-ins). I have lost all of that. I have google talk catching up for hours-old conversations whenever I hit a wifi spot that's saved in my phone.

This post is harsh. But I agree with most of it. Overall, the Triumph fits with a prepaid phone reputation: niggly bugs, poor battery life, poor service quality when compared to a higher end device.
The main problem here is that you'll be totally dependent on the community for real bug fixes. Every phone has bugs. But the bugs on the Triumph affect core usability and are on a totally different level. I would not count on Motorola to fix these bugs. If you're the tinkering type and a patient person, this may be worth it. But anyone who thinks that they are getting "something for free" is sadly mistaken. You are paying $25 a month for cell phone service, which is great . But all these bugs will make you pay with your time. How? Time looking for new roms, apps to fix bad battery life, time wondering why the touchscreen response is poor, time working around the bugs in every day life. If that is fun to you (and it may be for most people on this forum), fine. But you are paying with your time. Lesson learned is not to be so quick to fall for the specs. The company offering the phone and their track record of pushing out updates should play a large part in my decision next time.
I usually have WiFi turned on all day, and sync. I use the phone on my breaks and at lunch. When I get home I troll forums heavily and watch netflix occasionally. Not to mention Pandora for at least an hour per day. The battery will last if I dont plug it in until the next morning. Bottom line is that a lot of these issues can be fixed with quality software, and a battery cycle of 18-24 hours is something I can definitly live with. Compared to my Ascend, the Triumph is soooo much better in battery dept.

Battery issues
I am not sure why a lot of people have issues with battery, I unplugged my phone over 7 hrs ago and right now have 57% battery left, now before you hang your head at this look at my usage:
-Over 1 hour of talktime out of 7 hours.
-50+ texts back and forth
-10+ emails back and forth
-5-10 youtube videos
-5-10 pages of web browsing
-dl and install apps
-facebook at least 2-3 times every hour
And some more fiddling around so basically I have been on the phone non stop for 7 hours and its lost only 43%
That said, most of that usage came from the first 4 hours where it lost 36%(1+ hour of talktime, youtube videos im not really shocked there)
6th hour i texted and browsed etc only 5% battery used.
7th hour I just sent back and forth a couple of texts and only 2% battery used.
All this when i dont use any applications like task killers etc..i just let them run the way they want. Also no wifi, everything over 3g.
so imo if it gives that kind of battery its good enough for me. I was really scared when i bought cuz people were complaining so much about its battery but im fairly surprised. One factor that could be though is that I am not running the GPS, no need for it yet, when I do ill update what kind of usage i got.
I get 23 hours battery life with HEAVY usage and 30 if mostly idle. Many may disagree but if you live or work in a Wifi zone, keeping wifi on and setting it to never sleep greatly INCREASES battery life. 3G radio uses more juice especially if low signal or always searching. If you click on Battery Use and see your "time without a signal" is anything over 20% then you will most certainly see increase on battery life if you leave wifi locked on while in a wifi zone.
Also, side note: I have a 1500mah Anker battery that also increases juice time I recommend it!

23 hrs with heavy usage? Unless yours came with a 2300ma battery and not the paltry 1380ma battery, there's NO WAY you're getting 23 hours under heave usage.
I'm using a 1500mah calibrated battery and yep, its true I leave wifi on and set to never sleep when I'm at home or work. If not, 3G absolutely murders my battery. My phone drops between 3% and 5% per hour.

Well today I am having less luck with battery life. I watched two movies on Netflix and constant Facebook. I unplugged at 10:30am and it is now 4:48pm and I am at 52%.. still using 1500mah battery.

I just came from a Samsung Epic 4G. I have to say battery life it at least the same but probably better on the Triumph. The battery is also quicker to swap out on the Triumph. Between the already better battery life and ability to quickly swap, I'm more than happy.

As horrible as the Triumph batt life is then I'd hate to think how bad the Epic 4g's life was...wow!
First off, yes I realize that complaints about the Skyrocket battery are very common, and coming from a Nexus One I'm no stranger to the nightly charging, but I feel like my phone may have a real issue with proper battery management. For example, I'm looking at my phone now. It's been on for 4hrs 43 mins and is down to 73%. Screen is 61% usage and then the typical other stuff below it. For the record the screen has been on for MAYBE 20 minutes total for answering texts and checking Facebook/twitter updates. I should also note that I am using the Galaxy Nexus extended battery. I feel like every time I turn on the screen I lose 1-3% of battery. For the record, I've tried multiple Roms (Stock, SuperStock, NexusMod, Sky ICS, and running CM9 RC2 currently) and multiple radios (running RUXLF3 currently). I've tried underclocking my CPU with SetCPU and that doesn't seem to help. I just installed JuiceDefender but I don't see that doing much as I can't really turn off data with the screen off because I'm connected to my company's email (refreshes automatically every hour.) The only stuff I get pushed to me is Gmail (and I consider a very busy email day to be 5 emails in a given day). I don't get Twitter or Facebook updates sent to my phone. And yes I have Wifi/BT/GPS off as I don't need them. I'm not in an LTE market and thus am using HSPA+. However, when I WAS in an LTE area (NYC and Atlanta) the battery drain was almost to the point where I almost hoped I DIDN'T get LTE in my market if it meant my battery life would be as atrocious as it was.
Within about a 8 hour period it is not uncommon at all to be around 50%, sometimes dipping as low as 30% depending on how boring my day is thus resulting in more FB/Twitter checks than normal. I know that the Galaxy Extended battery isn't going to give me life on par with a Razr MAXX, but the difference I've noticed between the OEM and Extended seem almost negligible. Is this considered "Typical" performance or am I doing something wrong either software/hardware wise? Could I just have a bad phone and try and get it replaced since it's still under 1 year warranty? I'd prefer to not have to do that unless necessary as it means I need to back everything up and then wipe out my data and go back to Stock and reset the flash counter and then do the ICS update via Kies (because I know AT&T will fire back and say "Try out ICS first and then return if that doesn't work!") and all that fun junk.

My thoughts:
1. 50% in 8 hours of moderate use is, imo, not terribly unusual for a Skyrocket without a ton of fine-tuning done to it. The Skyrocket, in general, is not a marathon-runner of a phone. It's better for short sprints, although you can (as I have) make it a marathon runner with extensive tweaking.
2. I haven't tried all the ROMs you've listed, but I can tell you that CM9 on my Captivate and my Skyrocket had severe wakelock issues. My Skyrocket's battery would drain off at twice my usual rate when I tried it, and the ROM prevented my Captivate from sleeping at all (I was lucky to get six hours out of a charge--at best). It's not my favorite ROM for battery life. SkyICS, in my experience, is the absolute best battery life of any ROM.
3. Get rid of JuiceDefender and SetCPU. JuiceDefender works primarily by preventing applications from doing what they want to do. Common sense dictates that when a computer program is unable to do an assigned task because its primary method of doing so is blocked, it will try something else. That "something else" may or may not result in a series of wakelocks. SetCPU is designed for single-core processors. The changes it makes will usually affect only one of the two cores in a Skyrocket's CPU, causing the second core to do weird things. I do, however, recommend using System Tuner. All you need is the free version, because all you need to do is lower your min to 192 and change your governor to ondemand or conservative (I use conservative). You're not forcing new profiles onto the phone's CPU, just giving it a little "attitude adjustment".
4. Get rid of the Facebook app and replace it with Friendcaster. Like, now. The Facebook app uses battery and data even if you tell it not to.
5. Have you downloaded BBS? If so, are you using it to track down your wakelocks? I've got a post inside of the above thread that explains how to do so and, well, explains just about everything else I've already said here or would say if I continued. So, yeah, just read that thread. It's not terribly long, and there's a ton of great info in the OP and throughout.
For reference, I'm a light-to-moderate user of my phone, not as heavy as you by any means. I'm not in an LTE area, which helps. That being said, with the Nexus extended battery, I'm now at 2 days, 5 hours and still at 23% charge. I used the phone very heavily while traveling a couple of days ago, starting at 7:00 AM Eastern at 100% and ending at 11:45 PM Mountain with 11% left, 4h45m of screen-on time.
I just find that odd since I find people giving great stories with the SKY ICS and others in terms of battery life. Ironically, I've found that SKY gave me some of the WORST battery life which really made me feel like a dolt. Here's the latest battery stats attached. Perhaps my view of things is skewed though because my day starts at 6am and I'm at work by 7 (with my phone typically turned on at 6:30) so I still have a good portion of my day left by the time I get home and my phone is typically less than 50% by that time. It's weird to know you have about 7 hours left in your day and your phone is saying like 40% power left.
What's your screen-on time in those screenshots? The frequent wake-ups make me think that you've got some rogue apps syncing when they shouldn't be.
Hello OP, I have exactly the same problems as you except i'm still running stock (rooted with frozen bloat). I tried the Galaxy Nexus Extended Battery and from stock it was more horrible. appox 1 hour less than the stock battery. I did try not using my phone like normal (about 25 mins of screen on time) which was a PITA because mobile internet is my only way to sneak down time while watching my toddler son. The battery lasted 11 hours. With stock battery, I would've lasted around 10 hours. A lot of people say it might be bad battery BUT how can I have such terrible luck to get a bad stock and a bad GNEX ext batt??? lol. So I ordered the qcell 3800mah extended battery and boy I won't be looking back!!!! I am currently still at 25% battery, 17 hours 20 mins with 3 hour 38 mins screen on!! I watched two Naruto episode last night and didn't have to worry about my phone dying while I'm sleeping and end up not getting important calls from husband early in the morning. The hump doesn't look great but it does not bother me when I'm holding the phone and I have small hands. The weight is a little bit on the heavy side but for so much more battery hours, I don't think you'd mind. Now, if you are the type who is always out and can't find sockets all the time, I suggest you try this qcell ext batt. for $20 you can't go wrong. I know you'd hate spending another $20 but trust me the battery works wonders.
On a side note, i also ordered a charger for my standard and GNEX battery from ebay so I can charge them independently if i ever have to go on long long trips and need super juice. That's another $4, takes two weeks to get here from China. There's a hack here in XDA somewhere to make it a really fast charger because it is really a SLOW charger despite what their ad claims.

I just checked and it says 1 hour 4 minutes. There's NO way it's been on that long, or at least not with me looking at it, and I usually turn off my screen when I'm done as opposed to letting it go to time out, which is 60 seconds anyways. I'd say 30 minutes would be it AT MOST.

My goal is to avoid the super extended battery because then it means I need to buy a whole new case as well. I'm one of those people that "needs" a protective case because the only reason I have the Skyrocket is because last December my 1 year old took my beloved Nexus One and threw it down 16 flights of stairs. The phone then entered a vegetative coma state and never recovered. I can't have that happen again. So basically I'd have to buy the new phone then buy the new case. I'm trying to spend as little extra money as possible.

well, there are hacks floating around with otter box to fit the hump back. I'm sure you will find other cases from ebay that can be hacked this way too. I don't have this problem since Ii use my phone naked because i only got it for $10.00 and my other line is due for upgrade soon. anyhow, it really depends mostly on what you would rather have, battery life or case. It could be the phone but most likely AT&T will tell you that smartphones consume a lot of energy and if you are not within that 30 day period anymore they'll probably give you a refurbished one and you might end up with a more dud one than the one you already have.

I try to keep my phone out of my pocket because I don't think cell waves near my "area" is a good combination. When I am at work it's on my desk for about 7 hours, and then at home I usually leave it out (at a high elevation away from my daughter of course.)

That's still a little high. I was going to ask if your volume rocker wakes your phone, as that can be a big phantom screen-on culprit, but if your phone's on you desk most of the time...
Download BBS and pin down your wakelocks and alarms (which cause wakelocks) from there. If your phone's not suffering any extreme drain from a rogue app or process, then you might just be at the best you're going to get for your usage.
Have you tried different radios at all? I've heard those can have a minor effect on battery life, depending upon your area.

No but the 4 buttons do as it is a CM9 feature. Honestly though they aren't on for very long as I usually am near my phone and notice such things rather quickly.

I don't use the volume rocker for waking just FYI.
I got BBS. It looks informative but I'm not really sure what I should be focusing in terms of statistics and what, if anything should jump out as problematic. Any tips?
I have tried at least 4 different radios but I haven't noticed any major difference between them.
I just saw that CM9 has now been officially released in stable form. Maybe that will help. I'll try that ROM now. I hope CM9 is not the issue, as I've always been a "Vanilla Android" kind of guy and I really like how ICS is designed. I never liked how the other ROMS still had touches of Touchwiz in them. I especially don't like how it mimics iOS styles so much. I mean, I'm definitely pro-Samsung in the major lawsuit, but Apple has more than a few valid points in their argument. Having similar icons and a SMS theme that basically mimics iOS isn't going to help Sammy in the big lawsuit.
True, it's a well-known problem. You may find some rom with better battery life (here is the rom I'm using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854). You can also download some apps that save your battery. Try to turn off GPS, Wi-fi and data when you're not using, and also do not keep the brightness of your screen too high. I hope these would be helpful to you.
Check the link in my sig for details on how to really use BBS to improve your battery life. You're not that far off of a normal battery life for moderate to heavy usage, so just tweak it and go from there.

The thing is though is that I don't consider myself to be a moderate to heavy user, but more of a light to moderate. As I said, on a typical day I answer maybe 5-15 text messages, check Facebook/Twitter a handful of times, almost never get emails sent as I have no life, do almost no web browsing, and maybe take a phone call or 2. I very rarely play games and even less often stream media. My gmail is push but that's about it. I also use Touchdown for Exchange but that queries only once an hour. Am I still being unrealistic with my expectations on my battery?
Something definitely seems off, and you may well have a bad battery or even a bad phone. Try to go through and clean everything up in terms of wakelocks and any possible rogue apps. If you're still in bad shape after cleaning up your phone, something seems off. Mobile data does chew up more battery than Wifi, but not THAT much, and especially not in an HSPA area.

I don't think it's a battery issue. I've used the OEM and the Galaxy Nexus extended battery and both are delivering similar performance (although GN is slightly better obviously.) And as I mentioned, when I was in an LTE area my battery was getting beat down like Homer Simpson in a fight with Drederick Tatum.
Would it be advisable to try a FULL wipe of my phone? When I was installing CM9 today I saw the option to format EMMC. Should I try doing that or wiping other stuff or would that just do more bad than good? Should I try wiping that and/or the SD card?

I'm going to buy this phone, but i heard that battery life isnt good. Can someone tell me sth about it? Is there possibility to use this phone for whole day (6am - 10pm at least) with average usage?

Yes, you can easily make it that long as long as you're not running it extremely hard. I'd say I use mine average, some may consider it light though. Mine has been unplugged for 17 hours and still has 35% battery left. I have 2 emails syncing (push, not interval), an average of 100 texts a day, light web usage (15-30 minutes), and the occasional game. I also am connected to WiFi most of the time, have GPS always on, and have my screen brightness set to low, but it's still plenty bright in most situations. I play the occasional game but it isn't as often, plus I have background apps such as weather syncing with a live tile. This is also on a phone that hasn't been broken in as well. It's only 2 days old, so it'll get even better over the next two days.
Hm so it seems that battery life is normal, i mean like in other smartphones But i will wait for other opinions before i decided to buy it

Yeah, it's pretty normal for a smartphone. You can easily get through a day with moderate use, but never expect to get through 2 days. I chose the 820 cause the HTC 8x has the same size screen but is almost as large as the HTC One X and it doesn't have a removable battery or an SD card slot; and the 920 is just to big for me. I have a One X and its a great phone but it's bigger than I care for, and Windows Phone just works.
After a weeks use and several discharges my battery is starting to improve, I can now get through an entire day 6:30am-11:00pm with average use but no more as it really does need to go on charge before it shuts down, I find this adequate enough but still hope an update can improve things slightly in the future.
When I say average use I mean a few txts & short phone calls and a bit of browsing, 2x email accounts sincing every hour, weather app & wpcentral running in background plus manually checking feeds on people hub for twitter & facebook etc on a regular basis ,Location and 3G on constantly(Good signal), Tap&send off & Dark Theme as uses less power.
Hopefully what happened to me yesterday won't happen again. I had decent battery like throughout the morning with 9 hours since last charged at 54%, that's 18 hours total and I'm fine with that. I only sent a few texts over the next 2 hours with nothing running in the background except for a weather live tile that has been there since day one and when I looked at my phone the battery saver had kicked in at 20% after only 11 hours since last charge. Luckily I was around a charger, but this should not have happened.

I read http://www.wpcentral.com/skype-and-constant-syncing-problem-windows-phone-8 and since uninstalling Skype have noticed a slight improvement, Whether this is just coincidence I do not know, The Battery still sucks though

I wonder if that can happen even when I haven't signed into Skype? Because I haven't but that sounds like my exact issue. And it hasn't happened since either, just like they had said they haven't had issues.

Personally, I'm getting spectacular battery life with this phone. After about 2 weeks' ownership, I have not had less than 2 full days of use, and right now, incredibly I must add, it has been off the charger 2 days 3 hours and is still at 66% according to the battery control panel.
I have done little more than disable a couple of background tasks, and run the phone from 100% to zero a single time. I haven't installed much (not Skype), and while I'm not a heavy user, I'm not always moderate either.
I'm on AT&T and typically in LTE zones, with wifi for work and home locations. It has an EAS account with "as items arrive", and an IMAP account which checks hourly. Bluetooth, NFC, location services all enabled as usual.
Had the Lumia900 before this, and received a similar 2-day runtime, but not like this. Chalk me up to "pleasantly surprised" verging on "far exceeds expectations".
Use black background can save lot of power.

I have this phone and I can get 2 full days of charge with: wifi on,location services on,push email x2,some browsing and apps,moderate calling and texting.
Have to admit I get about one and a half days out of mine, two at a push with WiFi,data on 2 emails syncing and me on it constantly, yep the battery life is pretty good ?

I'm thinking about getting this as my first Windows phone and my two main concerns are battery life and form factor (thickness + weight).
I can get 2 days of light to medium usage out of a charge. It's not quite as good as my iphone 4s but it's within about 10% of it and it's better than my atrix 2.
I had one day where my battery dropped like a rock... in hindsight I think it was because I had signed up for some podcasts so the phone was downloading 4 huge podcasts in the background one after the other. So don't be surprised if you run into a similar situation during the first weeks usage of the phone where it's downloading content in the background (maps, podcasts, music, etc.).
As for form factor... I went into the store to check out the 920 and 8X... I didn't even have the 820 on my radar. After checking out the 8X and 920 I picked up the 820 and it felt like the best form factor to me... immediately. Keep in mind that I prefer the wider 16:10 aspect ratio screen on the 820 vs. the 8X (I also prefer the power button on the side) and I found the 820 more comfortable to hold than the 920. I'm also a sucker for the inky blacks of AMOLED. I'd highly recommend going to a store and checking them out to which one is the best fit.
It's definitely a better size (smaller, rounded) and weight (lighter) for me. Also it's not slippery like the 920 color models can be. It's quite plain, by comparison. Screen is great, more readable than my 900 was.
It's solidly a 2-day phone in my usage. Frankly, the wireless charging back seems unnecessary, now that I see how rarely I'd need it.
Great to hear so many of you are getting good battery life, This is my second handset as the first developed a fault and was sent back, Battery was bad enough on that one, Maybe the rubbish battery life I am experiencing has something to do with the stock O2 ROM&Radio ? And possibly the poor reception in my area, Am hoping an update will fix this

My wife's 820 was getting good battery life for the first 3 weeks, but in the last week or so the life started falling off a cliff. Its now only lasting about 1/2 day before kicking into battery saver mode with typical use.
Settings:
-Wifi is off
-NFC/tap&send is off
-High-sensitiviety touch option is off
-BT is on and only used occaisonally.
-email was set to check "as items arrive" but we changed that to 15 minutes to see if it woudl help (it didn't)
-no trouble getting 3 or 4 bars in LTE mode
-double-checked that apps that have background tasks that can be disabled are disabled incuding Nokia drive (made no difference)
Gonna try messing around with it for another day or so and then I guess we'll do a warranty claim for a faulty battery through AT&T.

Same exact thing has been happening to me. I just removed a lot of apps to see of any of their background tasks was causing it, they weren't. The battery lasts a real long time when I'm not using it for the first part of the day, but then it just dives. I checked it after 9 hours and still had 84% left (only sent a few texts for the morning); checked it 3 hours later after only sending a couple emails and it was down to 60%. It seems like it lasts a long time while not doing anything at all, bit the moment you touch it, it just stays awake and burns it down. Very very frustrating and is about to run me back to my One X.

Just called AT&T USA and they do not have Nokia 820 batteries in stock at the warehouse for warranty replacement. They said I need to buy a battery at the retail store and they will reimburse my account for the full amount. Full phones and phones without battery&back cover are the only items in stock for warranty replacement at the warehouse.
If I am unable to find a new battery at local stores, they said to call back and they would just send an entire new phone+battery.

Setting up a whole new phone is a PITA when you're just talking about a new battery. As loosely as the battery fits, I'm hoping a company makes a larger one that fits but doesn't need a larger back. Seidio does this a lot.
