[Q] Nexus S getting very low scores on Quadrant - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody!
I've been using my Nexus S for one and a half weeks by now, and I've noticed that the phone itself is very cool etc. but it's Quadrant scores (Standard Edition) are only about 1250-1390, basically. It does the "hallway" part quite well (about 40 fps), but in the "planet" and the "dna" section it's framerate drops to 10-15 fps.
Here are the average framerates of each section:
"Sun surface" - 19
"Hallway" - 45
"Flashing room" - 37
"Planet & Moon" - 11 (WTF??)
"DNA" - 19
Final result: 1385
Hope you understood my terms
The phone is running Android GB 2.3.1 (still waiting for 2.3.3), and I have heard people say that Quadrant doesn't fully support Gingerbread, but I'm still childishly annoyed about a Quadrant score so low on a such high-end(for now) device!
Do you have any explanation for this?

Quadrants mean nothing. But if it really feeds your ego, you need to update to a custom ROM + kernel to get higher numbers.
Also, there has been reports of people not getting the update to 2.3.3. So you should probably manually update to 2.3.3 (find it in the general forums "2.3.3 link" thread)

I get the same odd low scores that you do, but I get 2800 in quadrant. CM7 #36
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App

Yeah not to mention the stock kernel doesn't have this ext4 boost thing in terms of I/O speeds. it was explained by supercurio.

I get 1931 pts with mine, Nexus S GT-I9023 stock (2.3.3, GRI40, Radio KB3...)

Quadrant score means nothing.

Yeah thanks for just repeating what i said -.-

I suggest manually installing 2.3.3 update if you really want to stay stock... other wise, CM7 rc4 or nightly with ogdobber "james bond" kernel.. it's fast, super fast.. 3200+ points on quadrant with no OC..

well, on my NS i even hit 4539 (top till now) so i can say i got no complain.. although yes it is true in the planet section especially it get REALLY low fps

For some reason 3D part of the app runs like crap dev didn't do anything to improve this on NS
galaxy s runs same hardware yet caps out at 56fps on every graphic test
This is just another reason on top of the IO exploit that we shouldn't use this crap benchmark as a benchmark standard but try telling this to people who will continue to pop a boner over their exaggerated IO scores

he is talking about the low FPS is 3d test that has been present since day one of the nexus s and dev has completely overlooked for what ever reason

Can somebody who has a developer unit Optimus 3d try the Nenamark 2 Benchmark and post their results please? Just curios to see what its FPS is, and compare it to other dual core devices. (i know the software isn't final build tho)

this benchmark is not updated, SGII has got over 3000>>> http://gurkensenf.com/wordpress/?p=9044
The SGS 2 is currently the benchmark king, but all the benchmarks that are currently on the net for O3D show that the O3D was running pre-release software. There are no final release software O3D's benchmark test results out yet.
Ian
At mwc on february in barcellona,Lg press conference showed a 2900+ points in quadrant.
SGS2 can easily get over 4000 quadrant score when overclocked to a stable 1.5GHz.
I wonder if we can overclock the O3D? If so, I reckon it will also go to 1.5GHz possibly.
I've had the pleasure to play with it yesterday at LG. Only had the time to install Quadrant.

thank you very much!! so with 5th june rom the score is a little better thant before.
di you ask to lg for a release date?
Well the best I heard was the beginning of july in the netherlands. The representative said that with the final rom Quadrant reached about 3000, it is expected to go higher when 2.3 comes out for the Optimus 3d. 2.3 should roll out just after launch.

Quick question, why do the benchmarks seem a bit low is this review? Neocore didn't even hit 59 FPS! And the quadrant seems a bit low of 2800+ that LG claim...
Is this review still not on final software?
Thanks
Ian
The highest i got on Quadrant was 2680. But mine is running on May software, so its not final. Don't really compare this phone to SG2 because that comes overclocked from Sammy and is on gingerbread, that's why it gets high scores. Wait til O3D gets 2.3 and overclock kernel then we shall see its potential.

Multi-Thread Linpack

Linpack has a new multi-thread app out. The best SGS2 score has been 155.597 MFLOPS. The Zoom is the reigning champion. Any of you run it yet?
Looks like the Evo 3D to me with 201.754
I'm getting crap with CM7 lol. 39.807 for both single and multithread
Of course I'm running stock everything. Be interesting to see what a EXT4 kernel with a 1.5ghz OC gets.
I don't know if I'mdoing it right, but it only takes about half a second to run the test? And I'm getting results all over the place between 81 and 101.
edit: Oh, that was at 1300MHz...when I pumped it up to 1500, I'm getting values between 93 and 113 on multithread.
Running EB 1.05 w/faux 0.0.3 1500uv/oc
I noticed mine says "Inconsistent Result" for Precision. Seems goofy. Very weird. Doesn't seem accurate.
If I keep doing it, sometimes I get a value for "Precision" but the MFLOPS are all over the place. Like above but mine go from high 30's to low 100's.
Again with CM7.
CM57 + Morifc @ 1.5/1.5 = 107.568

someone said the evo3d and sensation are same processor but i thought that the
sensation was a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8260
evo3d was a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8660
did this change. if not this may explain why its not working on the sensation as it does on the evo even though the chips are simialair their must be some differences.

Right you are. The difference is because of the different radios, one being GSM the other CDMA. Could explain things.
I got a score of 140+ but it was Inconsistent Result. But when it does go through it is around 118 OC @ 1.55. I think it still has some bugs to be worked out for sure.
My stock Atrix is now hitting almost 90mflops!

I get 115 118 on oc 1500 but says inconsistent most times.
I believe from my experience with benchmarks is that these are made to favor certain setups ( ie. A specific phone.) I have no problems oc to 1500 all benchmarks run fine.
But on the smartbench 2011 it will give me invalid results on the 1500 oc every time. But the test run fine with no issues. Just my thought on this. Totally take these with a grain of salt.

dual core + ics

I'm currently running virtuous inquisition 1.3.0. I've tried all ICS roms and I must say I havent' seen much speed increase running single core vs dual core (enabled via system tuner pro). ICS was supposed to take full advantage of the dual core processor but - it's not doing that. I ran tests and after disabling one core the phone actually performs a bit faster - using all the tests I could find: linpack, Quadrant and CF-Bench. Could well be that it's just such an early release of ICS. But GB is actually performing better vs ICS at the current state of affairs.
Synthetic benchmarks are far from definitive.

I'm comparing apples to apples numerous times, the disabled secondary core results are always a bit higher.
It's a test ROM. What did you expect?
1. It's an internal test LEAK with a pre-official base
2. Asynchronous smp. Wtf do people not understand about our phones being asynchronous smp architecture? Ics WILL NEVER change this. Ics made the whole rom multithreaded (taking advantage of multi core) and made apps aware of multicore, but nowhere did it EVER say it would change our phone from asynchronous smp to synchronous smp.
Our phones are only built to have cpu1 come on when the load (not speed) on cpu0 reaches a certain threshold.
ICS WILL NOT MAKE BOTH CORES STAY ON ALL THE TIME! this would mean changing the CPU architecture which is not happening after the whole SoC has been designed, layed out, and built (the physical chip and its design).

I was expecting dual core perform at least on par with the single core, as ICS finally able to do it.
But you may be right - got trip's experimental beta and without even looking if it's running dual core - his rom smokes competition flat. Much better results than even the famed Galaxy S2.
I dont understand what are you guys talking about, im running ICS with sense for few days and its faster than anything before and benchmarks confirm it
2600 in quadrant and 6250 in AnTuTU and i couldn't get that much even with custom tweaked kernels with overclocked GPU..
Only problem is as its early stage dev rom, scores are some times "quirky" and drop in half but most of the times you get this high ones.
Also Browser is noticeable smoother, scrolling pages (XDA Sensation development) is smooth now and was laggy with ALL roms EVER. EStrong file manager also smooth as it should be..

Enough with Quadrant bashing. It shows useful FPS information and is relative. Now, if it only went to 2500 no matter what ROM you are using then yes, it would be useless. But getting a 1400 on it with one ROM and then getting a 2600 on it with another ROM AINT useless information.

I'm not the only one on here that believes that it isn't a reliable benchmark.
Have a look at some of the threads about it.
Since android is a multi-tasking OS results will always vary from test to test in Quadrant.

44.1 fps with Nenamark2 on Virtuous @ 1.188 GHz max 368MHz min.
2D performance has improved a lot -- I'm seeing double the FPS compared to GB ROMs -- that's all I've taken from Quadrant (max I'll get is 2200). Probably has to do with hardware acceleration.
Quadrant is extremely outdated and was not a very good benchmarker when it was up to date. It is inconsistant and, correct me if I am wrong, it does not take advantage of dual cores.
Nenamark is a great 3D benchmark.
Also, here is a screen shot I took a long time ago with my Nexus One.

You didn't mention which ROM. I'm assuming Virtuous
Actually the 3D performance increased after 2.08 update which brings android 2.3.5 with updated adreno drivers. I score 38-40 with 2.08, on the official sense 3 there is 25 fps max limit.
Anyway I read that 3D games don't work with ics build or works with noticeable lag. Is that true or games is playable now?

Questions about honor 6 performance

Hey guys,
I have few questions about my honor 6's benchmark scores and usability. Would be gr8 if someone can clear my concerns out.
I am running emui 3.0 btw.
I recently ran the gfxbench 3.1 in my honor 6 l04 and found my Manhattan and t rex scores to be Lower than others using honor 6.got 6.8 and 14 in Manhattan and t rex respectively with the power saving mode in normal.and then switched to smart mode and the scores went down to 4.8 and 9.7 in both while others with honor 6 get 8.3 in Manhattan and 17 in t rex. Not sure why this is happening. Device did not seem to heat too much either, temperature was below 39.
The other thing is that I am not able to have more than 18 apps open at a time though my ram usage never touches 2 gigs..I am unable to have more than 18 apps in the task switcher whatsoever. Is this some kind of a restriction with honor 6.
And the device is not rooted.
Any insight on these two situations would be hugely appreciated.I would also like to mention that antutu, browsermark and kraken returned scores similar to others with honor 6..
Thank you.

Sent from my H60-L04 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't either have the switch in shortcuts area, though it was here before updating to emui 3.0 (ie. on 2.3).
As to your other issues, I have no idea. Maybe you could try it on the 720p mode or something, though that's just a "maybe".
Regarding this 18 tasks issue, I have never gotten myself so far as to have so many of them open at the same time because I'm too much concerned with battery life and I always close all the apps, so can't help much here too.
Update
Just tested it and it indeed doesn't display more than 18 tasks, but it does not kill the ones not shown, so it shouldn't be very troublesome in my opinion.
I read your first post again and noticed you said your antutu and other benchmarks are similar to others. This could probably prove what I said earlier about the 720p mode. The greatest impact it has is on the gpu, so it would make the scores higher for graphics heavy benchmarks, which gfxbench is one of.
Yeah, even I thought of the same with gfxbench. But all the reviews claim to have run it at 1080p.In anandtech review they have scores for 720p as well. I guess it's because we are not able to unlock the gpu core to its full clock at least within gfxbench due to the lack of performance mode. From what I've seen, gfxbench too fails to unlcok the gpu before the benchmark as evident from the difference in scores between smart and normal mode. Can you go as far to run the gfxbench on your piece and give me the scores, just to make sure what I am getting is about the same as others running emui 3.

Sure I can run the benchmark on my device. Just tell me which gfxbench do you use because I can see two of them in the Play store (3 and 3.1)
Thank you,I used 3.1.

Here's what the benchmark looks like on my Honor in 1080p mode and power saving set to "normal" (I think it's the equivalent of "ultra" from emui 2.3):

As you can see, it performs even worse than yours. I've run the benchmark in a tpu case, it could possibly have some tiny impact on the heat dissipation and such.
I think the main reason you're seeing discrepancies between your score and that of others is the version of the benchmark. I don't recall seeing 3.1 back when I was doing such benchmarks for myself so it's got to be sort of new. You've been most probably looking at 3.0 benchmark results which contains quite a bit different benchmarks under the same names, so it can be confusing.
I tried 3.0 as well with no difference. The difference is most probably because of the lack of performance mode in 3.0
