Is it possible?
I'm in Europe so 3G isn't work...
I am curious what you are trying to accomplish by doing this? You can disable mobile data completely.
For example : like 3g part isn't fonctionnal, i'm in fly mode. And with this mode, wifi is desactivated automatically when you turn off the tab.
I think (hope) that in wifi firmware you don't have to turn on wifi in parameters each time you turn on the xoom
Why don't you just turn off airplane mode? You can disable 3g separately. The point of airplane mode is to disable all radios
To the OP: the benefit to Airplane Mode vs. turning off mobile data is A/M also turns off the cellular (3G) radio and saves battery.
But as this is an inconvenience you only have to deal with during infrequent reboots, I'd just deal with having to turn on WiFi each time.
Maybe more languages to in wifi only firmware (not confirmed yet)
You can just turn on Airplane mode then turn on just the Wifi thats what I do when I don't want to use my 3G service
How about actually answering the question?
Is it possible to flash the 3g version with the wifi only firmware?
Sure, it's dumb, and you can point that out, but how about actually answering the question?
With out actually trying it (I have flashed my Xoom about 30 times today and am just too tired to do it again. ) I would venture to say you can not. There are differences in that was causing some hair pulling. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...
Moved to the correct section.
Other interest : there's more languages in wifi only firmware...
Already confirmed, there is only one language (French) in addition to English and Spanish
Flash Wifi only Xoom with 3g firmware
I've noticed that the 3g limitation on wi-fi only Xoom (mine) is a software limitation, since it has the SIM card slot. Has anybody done this to try to enable 3g on wi-fi only Xoom?
Thanks a lot

According to this thread, it can't be done 'cause there's parts missing on the WiFi-only devices (likely to save money).
I have flashed and use dailly my verizon MZ601 3G XOOM, with WIFI only 3.2 version without any problems! I am also in europe and CDMA is useless here..
I have also tried various versions of fastboot images, and they all went successfull, so I dont think there is any more risk involved when cross-flashing.

if youre rooted, and you have root explorer try renaming phone.apk and telephony.apk to phone.apk.bak and telephony.apk.bak, then reboot
see if that works
if not, just rename em back to normal, if it does work, when you want to turn radio back on, just rename em back to normal and reboot
Airplane Mode.
sitlet, if brcisna uses Airplane Mode, then WiFi cannot be used either.
One possible option is to install another country's baseband software so that it simply cannot connect to any networks. Make sure the baseband software works with your phone (I use GSM, not CDMA, so not 100% sure if this works) and flash via OpenRecovery.
While this doesn't turn off the radio completely, you will still save battery as it won't find any networks in your area.
If I am wrong about this, anybody may feel free to correct me as I'm not completely up on how CDMA phones work with respect to the cell radio

thats actually pretty clever
its kinda amazing that there's not a "radio on/radio off" option on any of the roms out there
if a phone has a sim card, of course, you could always just pull that out, wifi still works without a sim card as long as build.prop doesnt demand a sim card be inserted
If you enable airplane mode first, then turn your wifi back on your good to go.

nice! never thought of that
Nice I am doing this with my Droid incredible. On stock/sense ROM I could not turn wifi/bluetooth back on while in airplane mode but good old Cyanogenmod lets me!
After some hunting, I have finally found a pretty easy way to do what I wanted. I wanted to use WiFi and bluetooth with the cell radio off and airplane mode would not allow bluetooth to work.
Answer: *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information -> Turn Off Radio
Now if only someone could add a toggle in the standard drop down to one touch this...
Okay, so me and 2 friends have rooted our phones. (I have sensation, they have sgsII) but now none of us are able to connect to our schools wi-fi (Public) Everyone else (no root) don't have this problem...
And another question: what do a the radio do? And what difference can it make to flash a new radio?
:EDIT: Forgot to say what was wrong with the wi-fi; it gets stuck on "obtaining IP-adress"
Flashing the radio will allow your phone to pick up a better signal, I found that when I put the 4.1.7 ARHD rom on but didn't flash the radio I would only get a weak signal on both 3G and wifi. Last night I flashed the new 4.1.8 update and the associated radio and have much stronger signals.
What may also help is to settings>wireless & networks>Wi-Fi Settings>Soft menu key>advanced> and then check the Best Wifi performance box >soft menu>save.
Bump. Any suggestions?

Radio (and RIL) basically controls access to the Radio operations, 3G, WiFi, BT. If you install a custom ROM it'll come with a Kernel but the Radio needs to be installed separately IF it needs changing.
I usually get this error when I've mistyped the WiFi Password. Sometimes the number of WiFi channels configured on the phone might be different to the WiFi network. This is somewhere in the WiFi settings, under Advanced (after menu button as explained in the earlier post) possibly regulatory domain. My phone is dead at the moment do I can't confirm where.
When you installed Root/S-OFF did you also install a new ROM ? If so did you make sure that the phone has a compatible Radio. The Radio required version should be stated in the ROM's thread.
If you look in Settings->About Phone.... somewhere in there it'll say what radio you have on the phone.
Other than that It should work fine, just rooting the phone shouldn't affect the use of WiFi.
Hi guys, I had this issue with custom roms and stock, so it is probably a radio issue. If I am connected to my wifi network at home, then I go out, the phone switches to hsdpa (as it should) and then I come back home, the reconnection to the wifi network causes the phone to reboot.
I had this issue on all roms I used, both stock and trickdroid 3.1 / 4.3.
Does anyone have the same issue? My wifi direct is already disabled, my location is Italy.
Thanks
This is what I told support, but they wouldn't help me:
I have the GSM and 3G frequencies, but still it disconnects for a 15 seconds to 3 minutes a few times a day.. It disconnects from all phone services, even though I have great reception/signal. Why? How can I fix it? I saw this 'preffered type' of network or something in these advanced testing settings where you could change between alot of different network types like WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, LTE and so on, is there something I have to change there? If it helps I live in Norway.
""
So this has been going on for a long time, now I got a suggestion that it might help to flash new radio software (.zip?). I know about adb, fastboot and flashing using recovery, but I don't know what radio to flash, if tharæt's the problem. The phone can also use 15-30seconds to turn on WiFi, from what I know this might also be related to the radio software.
If you want pictures or more details, just ask
Thanks in advance!
Hello
Whitch software?
Just for test: switch off the wifi and test that your problem goes away or still present.

It happens several times a day, with or without a connection to WiFi (but I don't know when it will happen, so WiFi isn't off normally).
If possible try to switch off the wifi and test it.
Hi guys.
Just trying to share my observation and explore if we can do anything.
I am using D6683 (I think it is support to be a HK based handset). Using Lollipop, it has been working perfectly but 16GB not enough hence MM function that allow SD card and Internal memory merge is appreciated.
Since Sony decide to ditch us using D6683, the only option is using D6633.
1. Try using MM .575, it has huge connection problem. The phone will just stay in GPRS mode even connected to a LTE network. Driving from one point to another point, will just cause it to data connection to hang. Putting it in airplane mode and anything else won't work. Only reboot works
2. Restore stock and upgrade to .291, first day testing seem to be ok. Got LTE connection. It did try to swing a bit but it has been maintaining well. This i started driving with Waze. Connection start to go haywire, but it will be still try to reconnect. Data are "maintained" to certain extend. Let the phone along for about 2 days, the next thing I realize, only GPRS left. The signal logo got no more H, H+ or LTE. Check the phone service menu and all info confirm the LTE is available. Again a reboot fix the problem.
3. Change the setting to only WCDMA + GPRS. The phone was "perfect". No data hang issue and etc
Need all the sifu help. Assuming if the phone is rooted, how is the phone determine the connection method? I presume that the phone will initialize the modem to dial the connection. Can anyone share anything that we can probably trigger a redial and probably eventually inject into the phone data connection sequence. Again using Lollipop, there is no issue.
Appreciate any comments/advice.
Regards
Dan
