Very disappointed with D2G/Motorola quality - Droid 2 Global General

At my behest, my girlfriend got a D2G. She wanted her first smartphone and she has Verizon. She was curious to try out Android and wanted a physical keyboard. Instead of getting the Original D2 I had her wait a few weeks for the Global to come out.
I have only used HTC Android devices (I'm on T-Mobile). The first thing I noticed was how sluggish the phone was. Motoblur (aside from being ugly) was a huge resource hog. Sometimes while texting her phone would slow down when switching to the physical keyboard. It would crash or reboot periodically and just overall felt MUCH slower than my G2.

So this goes on for a few months... she's mad because her phone isn't performing to the standards I had lauded Android to be held to. Her phone is clearly underperforming. The D2G is a good looking phone, but the build quality is cheap. It's squeeky plastic and the slide mechanism is like rubbing two bricks together. (I'm not a fan of the G2 slider either but the D2G is nothing to write home about)
So to help with performance issues I decided to root her D2G a couple of weeks ago (with the help of some XDA members). I've rooted all my devices but nothing with a moto bootloader. It went fairly smoothly. I installed Fission Rom, thinking that striping the D2G of motoblur would speed up performance. This helped marginally... I didn't overclock it, but the phone still seems very slow. It's slow to wake up when it's 'asleep' and there is just a lot of lag. I'm thinking of getting her an iPhone 5 this summer since she is now completely turned off from Android. Frankly, I blame Motorola. Now that I see first hand the difference between HTC and Motorola in terms of quality I won't be buying any more Motorola phones. (the Xoom doesn't feel too hot either).
Did anybody have an opposite experience with their Global? Did anybody experience the same issues I encountered? Anybody wish they had waited for the HTC Merge? I'm not looking for people to just defend their purchases. Having used several Android phones I really feel that Motorola is many steps behind some of the other manufacturers. Even Samsung's phones seem snappier, stabler and sturdier.

My wife has had a similar experience. Her phone is slow, locks up and the battery dies alot faster than my overclocked dx. Either she is going back to verizon or im going to root at and see what we come up with.

Maybe the inside of your girlfriends purse is dirty or something because my d2g slides open and close just fine and I've had it since November. However, I agree completely with the statments made about MotoBlur. Its complete garbage and the battery on the D2G is inexcusibly horrible. I wouldn't make it some weekends without the almost mandatory car charger. The next phone I buy will definitely not be a motorola but that has nothing to do with build quality (I find motorola to be superior) and has everything to do with locked bootloaders.
Also, my Xoom is well built. Look up a step-by-step tear down.

Nah all the droids I have used slide like that... It's just not appealing to me and appealing to some.
The xoom isn't cheap, but poorly designed in my opinion (material + button placement etc). Not very aesthetically appealing either... but again it's an opinion thing.

i am actually pleased with my droid 2 global, i came from a captivate, and when i started using my d2g i was dissapointed at first, it was laggy and felt buggy, but when i rooted it and froze all the bloatware (i wanted to make sure i could update in the future, so i didnt want to remove the bloatware) and installed a new launcher, because most of the lag that you deal with in motoblur is because of the terrible launcher, i installed launcher pro plus (i had purchased lpp, and adw launcher ex when i had my captivate) and after that my phone seemed to fly, and battery life was excellent.
so to summarize what i said, get a new launcher to replace the stock one that is terrible, and if you can remove some bloatware and her experience should vastly improve.
p.s. i love the build quality of the phone, doesnt feel cheap in the hand like my captivate did, it feels sturdy and reliable, my slide mechanism is very smooth, the screen quality is great, the only regret i have about this phone is the locked bootloader, at least its not as bad as the gps and 3g issues i had with the captivate.

Oh I assure you, she's been on LPPlus since day one. I didn't freeze the bloatware because I flashed a rom that didn't have any installed. Still feels sluggish compared to my G2... also, my girl and I are sitting here watching a movie and her phone just randomly rebooted lol. She says it does that sometimes, even before I rooted. Maybe we just got a bad phone idk.

I am also very pleased with the phone build quality. I've been using the fission rom and note no laggy interface or anything either.
If it feels like you have to convince her that android is better than something else maybe you should just let her buy whatever she wants. Otherwise you may end up feeling guilty everytime theres an issue with the phone

When my phone was laggy before, it used to randomly reboot also, what i did to fix it was i sbf'ed and that fixed everything, i always seem to have that problem with fission, never found out why, fission doesnt replace all of the directories, so you might have had a bad android install, i suspect sbf'ing does though, except for those on your sd card, so maybe sbf'ing might fix her issues

No she wanted a smartphone on verizon with a keyboard. It was a no brainer. She wanted to try android because she's always amazed at what my phones can do. Also I know more about phones than her so of course she would rather have me help her pick one out.
I did reflash fission but its still not up to snuff or near as smooth as Froyo stock or Cyanogen Mod 6.1.1. I think I'm gonna get here a Merge if they ever are released.

Root it and rip out the bloatware, switch the home launcher to LauncherPro, utilize Autostarts to kill a couple other annoyances, and you'll find it runs really quite well.
Swyped from my VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1.1

Since day one with my d2g, it has rarely felt slow(only when I had my phone rooted and underclock the cpu at 800mhz). It does have a tiny bit of lag here and there but nothing like how my Motorola Rokr E8 lags lol. It is possible that your gf got a bad droid.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App

after updating my d2g will get random reboot at least once in a few days
Get her iphone, it is for ordinary ppl

My Droid 2 Global has been very snappy. It hasn't ever really lagged for me, but I don't have a lot of apps or media on it (Just really Facebook, Twitter, Engadget, and a few Google apps). However, the build quality is very bad. Within the first week I had dust underneath the screen (and I keep it on my desk!), and the sides both make more squeaking sounds than my 15 year old Honda.

lol yeah, that's not really acceptable. And I agree the iPhone is more appealing for the majority of users.. but honestly nobody want's to deal with lag or buggy software. I'm going to assume she just got a bad handset, but it really is performing poorly.
I'm not an iOS hater (in fact I have an iPhone and an iPod just because I like gadgets) and understand the appeal. While not ideal for me I think lots of people love the ease of use over control and customization etc. But most important is OS stability in my book. Android is hit or miss sadly.

Initial Impressions of Compare my Captiviate vs buddies Atrix

Thought you all might find this interesting. My buddy got his Atrix yesterday and I got to play with it this morning and compare to my Captivate running FireFly 2.1 rom. Initial impressions are frankly not impressed. I think my screen is brighter and pretier. The resolution seems to be higher on the Atrix, which is great, but the fonts are hard to read and buttons much harder to press then on my captivate which has same screen size. My phone seems to be generally snappier and when I ran NeoCore on both phones the Cappy beat the Atrix by 2 FPS or more every time. Not too impressed with duel core or perhaps the phone just needs an XDA hacked rom to fix it. Anyway, didn't love it to be honest which was a surprise to me. Love my Captivate even with the few issues it has. Just my thoughts and initial impressions.
I got my GF the Atrix to replace her N1, played with it all day yesterday. I liked it.
I think I could be perfectly happy with this screen.......... if I had never seen an amoled before.
The resolution is great. Very sharp. Text looks awesome.
Its a tough call. Images look sharper on the Atrix, but the color/blacks is better on the Captivate. Both phones set to 1/2 brightness, and the Atrix just has that LCD backlight washout look. But its not bad, its slight. Way better than an Evo for example. (or my galaxy tab)
I'm looking at both side by side, and I can't decide. One is sharper, but one has better looking color/black levels. I guess it will have to come down to preference. I'm really torn. And I will admit I'm an amoled fanboy.
The speed is much better on the Atrix. (I have the latest paragon ROM on my cap) I tried some webpages that the captivate would choke on, and the Atrix was fine. Also moving around the market, installing apps, much quicker. And never any lag anywhere. Doing a Titanium restore was *much* faster than I've ever seen on the N1 or SGS.
If you bench with Quadrant or Linpak, it destroys the cap.
Here is a crude photo of the screens side by side, you can see some subtle differences, but to really compare you have to see in person.

Wow, Boosted, that is interesting. Wonder if the diference is the different roms we are running. My Cappy running FireFly 2.1 was very obviously faster to me moving around the phone and in the market. My friends Atrix right out of the box was visibly slower. Even found it laggy when moving from portrait to lanscape. Anyway, thanks and always neet to hear others impressions.

Do another test when 2.4 rolls out. That is when true dual core support rolls out for Android. I'm willing to guess then you will actually see a boost.

I will honestly say it went back and forth. Somtimes the Atrix would be quicker, sometimes my Cap. But one thing I did notice for sure, was the web page scrolling, the app installing, and the Titanium restore was much faster on the Atrix. (and the bench numbers, but they are meaningless I spose)
As far as my overall impression... I still have my Cap. And I'm a sucker for getting phones on release day. I think playing with it for a day was enough for me, I'm going to wait and see how things play out with the Atrix getting updates, and the SGS2 coming.
My non-techie GF does however like it, seems to be a good upgrade from her N1.
I'm a photographer and looking at the pics above I'd say the Cappy is better. The Atrix has slightly better color rendition, but the Cappy's shadow detail is much better. Look at the car's front grille and the dark area in the trees to the left. Look at the front wheel. On the Atrix it is almost all one color, but on the Cappy you can see some more definition. Better shadow detail means better pictures in lower light and more crispness overall, areas where many cameras fall short. Can't speak to performance, but on picture quality alone I would take the Cappy. Of course, what you see on the phone's screen could be completely different than what you see after you transfer the pic to a computer, but if something like watching a movie on the device is important, the phone that better renders pics will also look better with movies.

I am by no means a photographer, but I can see what your pointing out. Also for info, the pic on the phones was shot with my Nikon D80 w/Nikon lens, and the pic of the phones was shot with the same cam/lens.
Also forgot to mention I have a couple of the 720p Samsung movies that came on the vibrant (or epic or something) just like showcase vids. Played one on both phones, and the cap was the *clear* winner. If I think about it, I'll do it again tonight, and take some pics of that, the difference is *much* greater than my car photo.
Another thing to look at is the bright areas. On the Atrix they are just blobs, but the Cappy still shows some detail. Look at the bright hedges to the left and right of the light pole. Very little detail in the Atrix ones. The detail of the bricks is also clearly better on the Cappy.
So to the OP or anyone that also had hands on with the device, I am assuming that the Atrix, to you, is not worth the off-contract price and/or renewing your contract for 2 more years? Just need your opinion

Sorry, but it was to me after a couple of days with the Inspire. Yes I returned it.
Just wasn't worth the 2 year upgrade for that phone and definitely not worth the no-contract price.
Edit: But I probably won't get the Atrix either because I don't want to do it all over again with the buying and returning, just wanted some opinions. But I can wait til the 3rd or 4th quarter of new phones.

I haven't seen an Inspire in person, but on paper it would be awesome if it had come out a year ago. I would imagine the Atrix would be better in every single way. I would rather have my Cap than the Inspire.
I have to tell you that I thought this might be my next phone, but initial impression was not better than what I have now with the Cappy for sure. Maybe a future update will fix the speed and make it much faster. Funny, my buddy with Atrix just walked in the room while I was typing this and he is struggling to read the screen. I noticed that with the resolution being higher that the words and icons appeared smaller myself. He is an older gentleman and having trouble reading the screen. Have to admit that I think I would be struggling as well. Does anyone know how to increase the fonts overall on an android phone? His is not rooted yet of course.
Awww weak, I was planning on getting this phone but it looks like qdisplay or w/e it's called isn't for me. Guess I'll wait for SGS 2
2011 is a sucky year for smartphones, even though it's the most hyped I've seen in a while.

Rooting the Atrix is super easy, only takes a couple of minutes. One click pretty much. I might even give this a try on my Galaxy tab for giggles..
Interesting write-ups and thanks for the information. I was impressed when I saw the Atrix on paper but haven't made it into the store to mess around with one. I love the screen on my cappy and it will be hard for me to migrate away from it. Once I finally got the ROM setup where I wanted it, I do like this phone. I am however, anxiously awaiting whats down the road this year.
Regarding the photo of the screens...
Think about it: a photo of an SAMOLED screen displayed on a computer's LCD display is not going to be of any use. By viewing the photo on LCD you're immediately eliminating 99% of the stuff that makes OLED stand out.
It's pretty useless to judge an SAMOLED screen (or a SAMOLED-vs-LCD comparison) via an image on a computer as a result.

New Phone coming to Boost Mobile MNVO of Sprint USA. It features 3.5 inch display or 3.2 inch. It is running Froyo. SD Card slot up to 32gb, no information so far on card that comes with device. 3.2mp camera (no idea if it has flash)
No actual information on processor but I'm going to assume it's an arm 11.
The actual phone is supposed to be announced at a Boost Mobile / Samsung event on April 5th.
I'm betting my money on $150 usd for the device.
If anything, it'll either be the qualcomm ms11 turbo, or the Samsung SC soc they've been using a lot more. I'd rather see the qualcomm one, seeing that their older SoC's suck.
Wow, that's a lot of bezel. ;;;
I currently have a myTouch 4G, but unfortunately live in a 2G T-Mobile area. Thinking of moving to another carrier, that is also cheaper. Love Android, so this little device interest me. Came here in search of CM7 rumors for this phone. I'll sit back, wait and watch.
Since I have less than 8 posts here, I am not able to provide the Engadget link for this phone, which says: 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 2 megapixel camera, $180.
Beautiful, like everyone in the Samsung part.
Now let's see how this, in terms of internal characteristics.
Stay away, Blue Deathstar!
Boost is starting to give the customers what they want, i already have an android device on boost but Im thinking about getting this phone on a second line or give to my wife, is any rom cookers thinking about messing around with tricking out a rom for this one cause beleive me probally %50 of the boostmobile customers are gonna be all over this one! Its android baby!
I have my eye on this one knowing now that T-Mobile is about to become AT&T-mobile. I considered Boost for the $50/month unlimited plan which is a sweet deal, but at the time I was making my decision they didn't have any phones I was interested in owning. I'll definitely take a look at this once my contract is up, or able to be shredded due to AT&T related changes.
I've read that the Boost phones aren't as feature packed as some of the others... but with this being my first smart phone, will it matter much??
I currently have a phone that I just use for talk and txt on att's pre-paid service... so if I can get this and add internet and email for $10 less per month, that's what I wanna do. Coverage doesn't look too bad in my area... which hopefully it's not.
I'm mainly looking for something that I'd be able to tether with my Xoom and get 'net access to receive work emails and possibly transfer files via dropbox from time time when I'm on the road and not connected via wifi.
The Boost Samsung Prevail was finally released today. Will this entry level Android phone see lots of flashing love in the form of 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
Wow, that's a lot of bezel.
Picked one of these up this morning. To answer some questions:
- It only comes with a 2 gig SD card
- No Flash, samsung said its not supported due to hardware restrictions. I did try to install it, but it causes browsers to close.
- 179.99, I was told by the sprint store only the "boostmobile" branded stores have them right now, I had to hunt one down and they only had one on the shelf. Also they went on sale online this morning, and now the web page is reporting "sold out online".
- I have yet to root it, but haven't tried really hard yet either. SuperOneClick has failed for me.
That being said, it actually seems pretty snappy. It also has some weight to it, maybe because the battery is 1500mah. Quadrant results show 554, just a bit higher than the Nexus One, but below the Samsung Galaxy S.
CPU is an ARMv6, rev 5, 800mhz
Display is 320x480, but still looks really good. The biggest complaint I've been reading about is the screen size, but I'll be honest, it doesn't seem that small to me. Maybe thats because I've been using an Android loaded Vogue, and they are smaller phones.
Its also only sports a 2mp camera, but I took some pics today and they turned out better than expected.
My personal opinion is the phone is well worth 179.99.
I would like to hear more about the Prevail, and look forward to learning more as more of these get out into the field. I'm considering one of these for my first venture into the Android world. Seems like a decent deal with Boost plans, and the phone is affordable. I'm a little concerned that it may not get the kind of attention that other phones get in terms of rooting, custom ROM's, etc. I know this is something we can always customize to taste, but with the limited horsepower, I for one really like the fact that the original ROM is basically vanilla Android.
I hope many others will share their initial impressions and then their progress with mods.
@dbwelch
That was my concern as well, that it might not get a ton of attention as currently the prevail is only for boost mobile.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Vogue on boost, and I noticed some of the rom developers were Boost Customers, so there is hope. At the very least it would be nice to see someone root the thing.
Awesome, just for me!
I have a prevail and i must say...its better than advertised.
The screen is small but is more than functional. The small
keyboard is not an issue as you have swype, android and a
few that can be dowloaded from the market for free. I like
the fact that it comes with froyo stripped of all that
manufacturer bs...no sense or touch wiz to clutter it up.
It's well worth the $179 price tag.
i hope this phone picks up.
i got it yesterday for my girlfriend after hunting it for like 3 hours.
i wasnt expecting much, i mean 215 after everything shouldn't give you much, but i was wrong.
the screen is really nice and responsive, the camera is eh, but come on, is snappy, and even better with adw launcher in it, boost 3g network down here is surprisingly good, browser experience is just nice, multitouch support and all the good stuff, yeah it lacks of flash, but im sure it can be enabled, the processor is not that bad, and with customs kernels and stuff, and little oc the phone should kick some ass and then some, i mean it already does. oh and sometimes it lags, but is minimum, even my g2 lags at times.
for 215 total is a great deal, and with cyanogen, or any nice custom rom this phone would be something just awesome. i really wish this phone takes off and devs look at it, because is worth it, yeah for the price range theres the lg for virgin, but you can't go wrong if you have boost with this phone.
again, i hope this phone takes off and devs and custom goodness comes afloat because is well deserved.

Hello,
I am very interested in this phone as I am looking to leave TMobile and this combination of phone Android plus the all-inclusive plan with shrinkage seems to be the best option for me. What I am wondering is has anybody opened the phone yet? I currently have a Samsung Vibrant and I had a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and would like to know if the inside components are similar? I would like to install the 4G camera (FFC mod 5mp back-facing) in this Prevail, just wondering if the ribbon/connector for the camera is the same, since the location and design seems the same.
Thanks

What I am wondering is has anybody opened the phone yet? I currently have a Samsung Vibrant and I had a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and would like to know if the inside components are similar? I would like to install the 4G camera (FFC mod 5mp back-facing) in this Prevail, just wondering if the ribbon/connector for the camera is the same, since the location and design seems the same.
Thanks

Even if there were some parts compatibility (which I doubt; the SGS lineup are all 4" and roughly the same dimensions) I don't think you'd find a working ROM or other setup that allowed you to use that FFC.
Will Boost port your phone number from another carrier??
I'd like to be able to keep my #, but it's not a deal breaker if they can't.....

Is it really that bad?

I am interested in potentially owning a Sidekick 4G and I have been doing research on it.
I hear that it freezes all the time, text don't come through, and it is just a pain.....and then i hear people have no problems with it at all.
Is it really that bad? I don't necessarily care that it has Android 2.2 and it has weak specs. I actually like the skin and it seems like a fun device.
It is free right now(Along with the G2X...which i was considering getting but i've heard even worse stuff about that one)
OR i was considering getting it on MOnthly 4g for 50 bucks a month for everything Unlimited
But is this phone truly that bad?
As a teen who has it since may. It is not as bad as It may be daily I have my phone fully charged at 100 around 9 pm est time and by 7 to 8 it has around 20% so it's pretty good. How ever since it a hard device to sell as it is marketed towards teens and I seen Alto of teens raging about it memory is an issue but the task anger very handy.
Weekly I have my friends g2x and tbh it's battery last is worse than the sk4g. Same 1500 mah and also his phone freezes atlot and has to get battery pulled constantly to cool his battery which drops the battery level all the time

If you run a kj2 based rom its not really unstable. I haven't seen any issues with not receiving sms either. Its not as responsive as something like a sgs2 though.
I am 17 so the teen thing doesn't bother me since I am one
The main things i have seen on the youtube video and the t-mobile site is the fact that
At first the phone seems great(and then shortly after owning problems pop up).
the sms not sending or being received, the freezing and having to pull batteries
In fact most of the t-mobile reviews for the phone trash it.
I am not expecting Dual core experience or anything of the sort like that but do you regret your purchase or are you content enough with this phone for another year?

No, it really isnt, aslong as you go to KJ2 its pretty nice, over all i like it especially the style its set up with and how its built around texting. Personally i like it alot and its hard to win me over since i have a high standards when it comes to phones, if my starts where the same for girls as they where with phones i'd be single for the rest of my life. I think its just un-popular because of all the other phones out there that are mass advertised
Kj2 or gingerclone
I Don regret it after now it's just idl all the bashing on it since. Samsung didn't do everything everyone wanted

I've never had any problems with my phone not receiving messages, that's something I wouldn't be able to put up with. I have dealt with quite a few freezes, causing me to have to pull the battery. The biggest annoyance is when the screen doesn't respond to your touch. Sometimes it will click things when I'm not touching the screen and sometimes the screen will shake back and forth. If I knew these things happened, I probably wouldn't have bought the phone. I would rather fork out a few extra bones for a phone that is a little less buggy.
You can always get the phone from T-Mobile, and they allow you to have it for so long, and if you don't like it, you can bring it back and get something different.

I love the design of the sidekick even though i'm using 2 different phones now on an off (x10 mini pro/captivate) I feel like the software is what really is screwing this poor phone over for me. As with the captivate which also ran 2.2 it had almost all the same issues i had with the sidekick but when it was updated to 2.3 almost every issue i had with being laggy slow or just plain crashing pretty much vanished.
I love the design but 2.2 is gay and old.
From my experience it was that bad. The phone was my wife's and I can't ever remember a day where she didn't have to pull the battery at least twice. It had the tendency for the screen to become unresponsive at the most annoying times, generally when you were trying to answer the phone or after you typed a txt message. It lagged awful, particularly going back to the home screen after backing out of an app. The other oddity was that sometimes the screen would just start acting like it was possessed by ghosts with things randomly happening.
I have owned a lot of androids and this was the absolute worst. The KJ2 update made it a little better, maybe a battery pull every other day instead of the two+ a day before. I finally started complaining loudly to T-Mo and they send me a MyTouch4G Slide which (knocks on wood) is okay. I know some people really like their SK4G's, but in my experience Samsung screwed this up something awful, didn't release the source code so others could fix it and get it off the crappy froyo build. With no disrespect intended to anyone, I wouldn't recommend this to people I disliked and it put me off samsung as a brand.

i actually just put this on my sk4g that runs Glorious Overdose. so far so good, the only battery pull problem i've had was before i installed GO and then once again today when i accidentally messed with some files i shouldn't have. so i wiped everything and re-installed GO and its been great since.
i will update in a few days to let you know how its going, because honestly i love this phone so far. great keyboard and the display is good for how small it is.

The unresponsive touch screen seems to be fixed by downloading spare parts from the market and setting wifi sleep to never.

Perhaps you're doing something wrong? Cause plenty of people have used it and not had that problem...sounds strange. I'm not an expert but if so many people have used and liked it without that problem, then maybe you've done something wrong. Use the heimdall one click back to stock and then start over. I had to do it with GO but I love it now

Most T-Mobile reviews are crap anyways, the only true drawback on the phone is the launcher it comes with, it is pretty much useless. I find that most stock launchers are slow and buggy and not to mention laggy. Touchwiz being the worst. If you slap an aftermarker launcher the phone is pretty much 40-50% more effective. I have gotten the best result with launcher pro, and go launcher.
I love the hardware, hate the software. The stock ROM always froze on me and some of the ones devs made froze too. I finally settled down with glorious overdose. It's been working fine as a phone but I was really used to the completely streamlined feel of CyanogenMod with my Cliq.
Software bashing aside, I think this is the best phone out. The full qwerty keyboard (numbers included) makes it so easy to correspond with friends and co-workers and the sliding action is pretty cool too. All it's missing is a flash.
If they ever get cyanogenmod or a heavily modded rom, the sk4g will definitely be worth buying.
its not the rom, its not the launcher, its not the hardware, its not touchwiz. its wifi, gmail, the stock browser, or maybe one or two other system apps. after i deleted gmail and the browser, everything is fine. i dont use wifi so thats not a problem.

[Q] Is this phone enough?

Hello All,
I'm looking at picking up a Maxx HD, but I had some questions about a few components from those of you who have it. My three concerns are:
1. Processor - is dual core quick enough? Quad cores are coming out now, but I'm not sure how long I can wait, probably not beyond Jan, not sure what new there will be by then.
2. Ram - is 1gb enough? See any issues maxing this out?
3. Camera - This one is important to me, I want it to take some decent pics but I've read some bad things about the pics taken from the camera on this phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, looking for at least that quality in the pictures (I know it's an older one). I've also heard that the JB leaks give a boost to the camera as well.
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

1. I was using a Galaxy Nexus for several months and that that phone was fast and smooth. The processor in the Razr HD is even faster. For speed, it really comes down to software at this point and the Razr has the closest skin to OEM. I don't see much of a difference when jumping from dual-core to quad-core unless you're crazy about benchmarks. At some point, benchmarks become meaningless - everything is so fast that the user won't notice a difference even though the scores may be substantially different.
2. My phone has been running for four days without a reboot or any task killing. I have have 239 MB free. Sure some phones have 2 GB of RAM but maybe they need it because their skins or so heavy. I don't have an issue with this phone and the 1 GB.
3. Sorry, I haven't used the camera much. I have taken two pictures and they came out nice
I wanted to add this in case it helps:
Some phones may come out that are faster UIs (like the Nexus 4) but the fact that this phone has LTE and the most amazing battery life in the market (I have the MAXX). Over the weekend I was at 27% after 53 hours off of the charger and nearly 6 hours of screen time. The fact the you can use your phone without worrying about running out of juice is priceless. Also, the phone comes with ICS out of the box. I'm running the JB and I can tell you that it's much smoother and basically all lag was eliminated with the update. The official OTA may be even better.
I got a screaming deal on the MAXX so ended up getting 2 and this is what I have found so far:
1. First thing I did was install the JB leak and it is now considerably faster. ICS really is what's holding the phone back. UI is buttery smooth.
2. Memory management is actually pretty good because the skin is pretty damn close to stock. With most stuff I use being open I have 300mb free right now.
3. The stock moto camera app sucks, the nexus 4 one is a lot better and gets rid of shutter lag completely.
I came from iPhone land and so far I am very impressed with this phone, plus the battery lasts forever.

For #3, are you saying there is a 4.2 camera replacement in the market? Or are you just comparing the the Nexus 4?
You can't always judge speed based on counting cores (http://www.tmonews.com/2012/05/editorial-why-a-snapdragon-s4-galaxy-s-iii-is-awesome/). As a previous poster said, the Galaxy Nexus is dual-core, and runs very smooth. I have the Razr HD, and there are many times when I think it runs better than my quad-core Nexus 7. This device is fast, and JB will make it faster.
I would of course prefer 2GB of memory. But it's really not a huge issue. Android will keep as much in RAM as it sees fit, and when it runs low, suspend apps to make room for the current one. What this means is that when you switch back to the suspended app, Android will restore it (assuming the app developer coded well). The end result is: More memory means apps get suspended less often, but unless you are a very heavy multitasker, you probably won't notice much of a difference at this point.
I can't speak much about the camera. I've heard some complaints, but I don't really have any. I would suggest you take some photos in the store, and see. I have a variety of third party camera apps, and am OK.
This phone has the same processors as the US version of the S3. Same GPU. Roughly the same screen. Really nice build quality. Awesome battery life.
It's a killer device.
Thanks for all the info. So in regards to the camera, are you saying that I'll get better shots with the Nexus 4 camera app? Meaning it's a software issue limiting the camera quality not hardware? That eases my nerves a bit. Thanks to both of you for the advice!

1. The processor seems more than adequate, I don't notice a difference between it and the Note 2 or DNA, they are all very smooth.
2. I didn't notice the RAM holding this phone back either, I'd say it's fine for now but it will cause problems down the road when newer OS versions come out. That's a major reason why older phones are no longer able to be upgraded (so the manufacturers claim)
3. The camera sucks, plain and simple. This is one of two reasons why I returned my MAXX HD unfortunately.
Another note:
A Best Buy employee told me that they have a 14 day return policy with no restocking fee on upgrades. They have a 30 exchange period. So you can try a phone out for bit and exchange it for another one with no penalty. If you have for more than 14 days, you're forced to upgrade and you can't return the phone (but can exchange it).
Finally, my Best Buy price matched Amazon Wireless so I got the MAXX HD for $174.99
So the consensus seems to be the camera isn't very good. How would it compare coming from an older phone? I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so my camera is a bit behind the times too, will it be worse than that? I don't want to step backwards, but not as good as some out there isn't a problem for me.
Thanks,
Tim

I imagine the camera has to be better than my old iPhone 4 and that's all I'm looking for I guess is the same or improved. If I'm wrong here please correct me. I don't need an amazing camera as I'll use my DSLR, but I want it to be good. I don't mind trying and returning if I don't like it, the problem is that I'm on AT&T now and have to port my number to try it, then port my number back to AT&T if I go with the One X+ instead (the other phone I was considering).
Thanks,
Tim

I think the camera is actually nice when you switch the app and I came from an iPhone 4 as well. As far as porting you can always open the new line on verizon with a new number and then if you decide to keep the phone you can port your number later. That way you can get a One X+ with ATT to try out and the RAZR as well.
I will say this though that this phone does look a lot better built than the One X and even the Droid DNA but then again I have never considered HTC phones to have that great of build quality anyway.
Very good, thanks for all the info! I think I've decided, unless something new comes out in the next month, looking at getting it right after Christmas.

No more LG for me!

Okay, so my G3 was my first LG Android device. That phone was great. Life WAS good until the screen started fading to black. I tried everything except replace the motherboard. I figured it's just time to upgrade instead.
Which brings my to my V10. I just got this phone on February 8, 2016 and already have a hardware failure. The freaking right mic (the mic you speak into during a call with the device up to your ear) is dead.

There have been no major drops. The worst being a fall from my bed to a carpeted floor. All while wrapped inside an Otterbox Defender.
I know I know, any given day with the right circumstances and a minor drop could cause such an issue as this. But c'mon! My Motorola Droid X still works flawlessly after all the years.
I think I'll go back to Samsung depending on the developer support.
✌? LG. Life hasn't been all that good using your devices. Thanks to all the V10 devs and all XDA devs for your awesomeness. I solute you.

I hope no phones act like my last two LG devices. In my experience, I've owned Moto, Sammy and LG phones. Lg is the only brand that I've had hardware failures with. Don't get me wrong, I like my V10. It's just hard for me to call it great once the hardware takes a dump on me. Cheers.

Hopefully it was just one isolated incident with the speaker.

No worries. I hope I didn't come off sounding like a jerk.
Anyway, well so far so good with the replacement V10. It came with Marshmallow already installed. I'm so glad that there's a root method for us V10 Marshmallow folks here on XDA.
I'd say keep your V10. I could have made a big fuss to T-Mobile that I didn't want another V10. They would have gave me an option for a different device or I could have just used my Jump upgrade. I really like the V10 and so many people like it too after playing with mine. Hey even high-end exotic cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Bugatti, etc have issues but they are great machines
So......

Hello all, I had a G2 that gave me touch screen problems and was too disappointing by it to try the G3 after those hardware issues. I have been HTC all the way with no Issues.
Tried giving LG another chance with this G4 and this phone has the worst battery life and heating/lag i have ever had on a phone. With CM13, the camera takes a dice but at least it is not as laggy but battery is horrible. Having to spend the whole day chasing portable chargers and power outlets is no fun.
Thinking about the V10 since it seems to be everything the G4 should have been . I am not sure, LG has had too many hardware issues with my devices and horrible battery life on recent generations.
Would you recommend it today?
Thanks All,

Personally love the phone, but don't expect extreme battery life, if you were disappointed with the g4 you will have the same woes here
Also note that not many variants can be rooted, read up and make sure the one you get can be if this is important
Other than that expect a lot of similarities to the g4

thanks for the tip! I thought i had made up my mind on what could be my next daily driver phone yesterday, but i just stumbled upon a vid made with the V0 and craved it all over again. This H811 (tmobile) G4 heats up and lags with bad battery life on Stock Rom. Cm seems to help a bit but the camera is no where close to stock.
Will have to make a choice. I would be happy with at leats stable 4-5hrs SOT for photography, music and texting.
Another Question, will the G4 battery work on this device?
Thanks!

Thanks!

T-Mobile variant is the way to go
G4 and v10 share the same capacity but unfortunately my wife's battery her her G4 won't fit in mine... So no luck there
But there are others mentioning some good luck with aftermarket extended batteries if you don't mind the extra bulk
If you plan on 4-5hrs sot with lots of photography than you will probably need one, if you run pure stock than 2-3 is what you should expect (custom Roms don't have camera)
But there are a few tweaks out there that can get you closer to that 4-5 with stock battery but of course you'll need to be rooted
So long answer is expect 2hrs sot if stock and 4 rooted/mods
And yeah, this phone rocks, fully recommend it, but battery life is terrible enough i have a spare battery (which beats any quick charge i may add)

Thanks for the reply. Was thinking of the Tmobile Variant. Seems that the Tmobile LG's of late for the get the support for US variants.
I am really fearing a lot of heating and lag like with this G4 that only seems to be controlled with CM roms. I will definable consider. Last question, this device is somewhat big. Is it biiger than a Sony Z3 o Nexus 6P? is it too big?
Thanks!

With the various mods available you will get no lag or overheating problems, at least i don't
But my wife has no issues with her g4 either (other than battery life of course - we both had OnePlus one before these phones and we easily made full days with those)
Size wise... Yeah it's big, biggest I've used, never held a z3 but it does feel bigger (just a tad) to the 6p
Truthfully i don't like that it is this big, but not really a huge deal to me, the screen is excellent and the phone is pretty but i would be fine with a slightly smaller screen (like the G4 is for me about perfect) it really should be fatter though, this i would take, so long as a fatter phone meant a bigger battery anyway
This phone has one of the best cameras you can get still and i love the manual video control too ( i have an active 2 year old so the camera is about the most important thing on a phone i look for)
So for my personal use this is a damn near perfect phone so i still recommend it, just keep a spare battery and expect to get used to the size (you will)
Well, my warranty replacement V10 didn't make it 4 months before complete death! I was talking on the phone when all of a sudden it started making a steady soft beep. I removed the device from my belt clip ad the screen was frozen on the in-call timer. Then it went black and never powered back on. It won't charge. The PC won't recognize it. NOTHING!
TMO wants to give me a 3rd V10. F*ck no! F*ck LG! I've had a G3 with the screen flicker. The upgraded to the V10. My first V10 had a mic failure. Now the 2nd V10 just flat out died all together. F*ck you LG! Never ever again will I knowingly and willingly give you anymore of my hard earned money.
i was a BIG samsung fan until the s5/note 5 game out with completely locked bootloaders - even on tmobile. so i tried out the lg v10. i LOVE the hardware and the software works great with it. but just like older htc phones, we have no source to work with. so we're screwed on asop based roms. i absolutely cannot stand being limited with global dpi and other settings that i have to use through 3rd party apps like g4 tweaksbox (love what the app is good for though, thanks dev) or use other "hacks" to get what i want. not being able to go in and quickly flash new roms to try really killed it for me on the v10 and v20 (along with samsungs). recently i made a move to motorola devices (against my gut feeling but i got a good deal) with the nexus 6 and moto pure. i freaking love it. unlocked bootloaders on all varients AND the hardware is great. i even have an amoled screen on the nexus. there's every rom option you could think of. and almost every rom i've tried is complete. plus moto puts out new android updates quickly unlike lg. i can even compare the camera quality on the newer motorolas to the v10 and v20. they're right on par. then again the new pixel also out shoots pics on the v10. i do miss how fluid and sturdy my v10 was but i don't look back since motorola came back into my life.
As much as I like the V10, I will probably sell it soon. The reason is, I got the bootloop issue 9 months after I bought it. It's now under warranty repair, but I fear that after it's repaired, the phone will get into bootloop again after a few months of usage, and by then my warranty will have expired already. And I doubt that LG has fixed anything to prevent future bootloops.
Next mission is to find another good dual sim phone with a dedicated SD card slot. Any recommendations?
