New Phone coming to Boost Mobile MNVO of Sprint USA. It features 3.5 inch display or 3.2 inch. It is running Froyo. SD Card slot up to 32gb, no information so far on card that comes with device. 3.2mp camera (no idea if it has flash)
No actual information on processor but I'm going to assume it's an arm 11.
The actual phone is supposed to be announced at a Boost Mobile / Samsung event on April 5th.
I'm betting my money on $150 usd for the device.
If anything, it'll either be the qualcomm ms11 turbo, or the Samsung SC soc they've been using a lot more. I'd rather see the qualcomm one, seeing that their older SoC's suck.
Wow, that's a lot of bezel. ;;;
I currently have a myTouch 4G, but unfortunately live in a 2G T-Mobile area. Thinking of moving to another carrier, that is also cheaper. Love Android, so this little device interest me. Came here in search of CM7 rumors for this phone. I'll sit back, wait and watch.
Since I have less than 8 posts here, I am not able to provide the Engadget link for this phone, which says: 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 2 megapixel camera, $180.
Beautiful, like everyone in the Samsung part.
Now let's see how this, in terms of internal characteristics.
Stay away, Blue Deathstar!
Boost is starting to give the customers what they want, i already have an android device on boost but Im thinking about getting this phone on a second line or give to my wife, is any rom cookers thinking about messing around with tricking out a rom for this one cause beleive me probally %50 of the boostmobile customers are gonna be all over this one! Its android baby!
I have my eye on this one knowing now that T-Mobile is about to become AT&T-mobile. I considered Boost for the $50/month unlimited plan which is a sweet deal, but at the time I was making my decision they didn't have any phones I was interested in owning. I'll definitely take a look at this once my contract is up, or able to be shredded due to AT&T related changes.
I've read that the Boost phones aren't as feature packed as some of the others... but with this being my first smart phone, will it matter much??
I currently have a phone that I just use for talk and txt on att's pre-paid service... so if I can get this and add internet and email for $10 less per month, that's what I wanna do. Coverage doesn't look too bad in my area... which hopefully it's not.
I'm mainly looking for something that I'd be able to tether with my Xoom and get 'net access to receive work emails and possibly transfer files via dropbox from time time when I'm on the road and not connected via wifi.
The Boost Samsung Prevail was finally released today. Will this entry level Android phone see lots of flashing love in the form of 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
Wow, that's a lot of bezel.
Picked one of these up this morning. To answer some questions:
- It only comes with a 2 gig SD card
- No Flash, samsung said its not supported due to hardware restrictions. I did try to install it, but it causes browsers to close.
- 179.99, I was told by the sprint store only the "boostmobile" branded stores have them right now, I had to hunt one down and they only had one on the shelf. Also they went on sale online this morning, and now the web page is reporting "sold out online".
- I have yet to root it, but haven't tried really hard yet either. SuperOneClick has failed for me.
That being said, it actually seems pretty snappy. It also has some weight to it, maybe because the battery is 1500mah. Quadrant results show 554, just a bit higher than the Nexus One, but below the Samsung Galaxy S.
CPU is an ARMv6, rev 5, 800mhz
Display is 320x480, but still looks really good. The biggest complaint I've been reading about is the screen size, but I'll be honest, it doesn't seem that small to me. Maybe thats because I've been using an Android loaded Vogue, and they are smaller phones.
Its also only sports a 2mp camera, but I took some pics today and they turned out better than expected.
My personal opinion is the phone is well worth 179.99.
I would like to hear more about the Prevail, and look forward to learning more as more of these get out into the field. I'm considering one of these for my first venture into the Android world. Seems like a decent deal with Boost plans, and the phone is affordable. I'm a little concerned that it may not get the kind of attention that other phones get in terms of rooting, custom ROM's, etc. I know this is something we can always customize to taste, but with the limited horsepower, I for one really like the fact that the original ROM is basically vanilla Android.
I hope many others will share their initial impressions and then their progress with mods.
@dbwelch
That was my concern as well, that it might not get a ton of attention as currently the prevail is only for boost mobile.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Vogue on boost, and I noticed some of the rom developers were Boost Customers, so there is hope. At the very least it would be nice to see someone root the thing.
Awesome, just for me!
I have a prevail and i must say...its better than advertised.
The screen is small but is more than functional. The small
keyboard is not an issue as you have swype, android and a
few that can be dowloaded from the market for free. I like
the fact that it comes with froyo stripped of all that
manufacturer bs...no sense or touch wiz to clutter it up.
It's well worth the $179 price tag.
i hope this phone picks up.
i got it yesterday for my girlfriend after hunting it for like 3 hours.
i wasnt expecting much, i mean 215 after everything shouldn't give you much, but i was wrong.
the screen is really nice and responsive, the camera is eh, but come on, is snappy, and even better with adw launcher in it, boost 3g network down here is surprisingly good, browser experience is just nice, multitouch support and all the good stuff, yeah it lacks of flash, but im sure it can be enabled, the processor is not that bad, and with customs kernels and stuff, and little oc the phone should kick some ass and then some, i mean it already does. oh and sometimes it lags, but is minimum, even my g2 lags at times.
for 215 total is a great deal, and with cyanogen, or any nice custom rom this phone would be something just awesome. i really wish this phone takes off and devs look at it, because is worth it, yeah for the price range theres the lg for virgin, but you can't go wrong if you have boost with this phone.
again, i hope this phone takes off and devs and custom goodness comes afloat because is well deserved.

Hello,
I am very interested in this phone as I am looking to leave TMobile and this combination of phone Android plus the all-inclusive plan with shrinkage seems to be the best option for me. What I am wondering is has anybody opened the phone yet? I currently have a Samsung Vibrant and I had a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and would like to know if the inside components are similar? I would like to install the 4G camera (FFC mod 5mp back-facing) in this Prevail, just wondering if the ribbon/connector for the camera is the same, since the location and design seems the same.
Thanks

Even if there were some parts compatibility (which I doubt; the SGS lineup are all 4" and roughly the same dimensions) I don't think you'd find a working ROM or other setup that allowed you to use that FFC.
Will Boost port your phone number from another carrier??
I'd like to be able to keep my #, but it's not a deal breaker if they can't.....

So my remorse period on my mt4g ends today and I was thinking of returning it so I can wait for the Nexus S, mainly for the pure Google experience.
Now that I see the specs I'm dumbfounded. WHY ON EARTH is it not HSPA+?
Less ram, no sd slot, no hspa+. I should probably just keep my mt4g with my whopping 768 megs of ram.
Thoughts???
**** this phone.. absolute deal breaker for me was no expansion slot... at least they should of put 32 gigs of internal memory... what a massive disappointment...

WTF £549 UK and $529 in US For unlocked version?!
Would it be possible to buy from US and will it work in UK?
Will save $331 if its possible
Pricing is also a big issue, i mean why is there such a big price difference for the same sim free phone, surely the shipping costs are not that high?!
differences from the Galaxy S are NFC curved screen and Gingerbread. The first 2 people arent too bothered about with the galaxy s already having a beautiful screen and gingerbread will come in the future or via a custom rom (if possible)
Major disappointment was expecting a dual core processor (orion) and a higher resolution screen. oh well at least its got a flash for camera

No clue on the shipping, but might want to research network differences.
As for the Galaxy S similarities - yeah, I noticed that right away. Same ram, same processor (although newer version, right? Will confirm.), same screen.
It does have the NFC thing, and I noticed the other day that the Fascinate already has the flash. Why the Vibrant doesn't is completely beyond me...
I swear, I really don't understand the manufacturers' decision-making process regarding spec of new hardware.
EDIT - I have to rant about this again. Why the **** did they not include support for HSPA+? That just doesn't make any sense to anybody...

Yup, Galaxy S and Nexus S have the same processor; cortex a8. The mt4g has a newer processor, I think; Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon.

*Sigh* all signs point toward the MT4G being a superior piece of hardware. I wonder why Google took the Nexus away from HTC and gave it to Samsung?
I'm more surprised that so many people were considering buying a Samsung phone.
Their issues go well beyond software quality
I will stick with my Galaxy S until a better phone with NAM frequencies comes around.
No sd expansion is a deal breaker for me as I normally use around 20GB for music, videos, and pictures.
Gingerbread will be ported to the similarly specd Galaxy S soon enough.
Seriously, lack of HSPA+ is the absolute deal breaker for me. I would have bought it for 2.3 alone but no HSPA+? It's like, why make a phone for a carrier and not support all its features? Why should I bother buying the Nexus S when HTC has released phones already that are better in almost every way and will release more in the future to trump? Why buy coal today when I can get gold tomorrow?
As much as I hate the MyTouch phones, I may end up with one. Why do all the Pure Google phones have to suck? (No offence N1 or G2 but N1 lacks HSPA+ and G2 is lower on processing power.)
sticking with the galaxy s for now
In the era of 768MB phones... (HTC) and time of 1.2GHz Cortex-A8 device (Motorola) with 8MP cameras (SonyEricsson) and mandatory SD slots and PROPERLY PLACED Home/Taskman buttons!!! We're presented with so called flagship phone that brings what??
Optimization for Samsung's Cortex-A8 architecture called Hummingbird?! Yes, that's OK, but what's with the rest of the offering? NFC!? who cares!?
this is really debacle!!
I still can't figure out who's idea was to place home button, that's so frequently used in the most ergonomically painful place?!

IMHO, Samsung made deal with Google to use Nexus brand in exchange for some benefits (money, scraping Bada, not focusing on WP7... who knows... who cares), and only thing they did is to repack Galaxy S for the fifth time!!
That's fine by Google, and marketing people with in Samsung! For crying out loud they're selling crap-load of Galaxyes despite their very well know issues with GPS, that just can't be mended by software patches... at least not properly!
What's bad for Google is that for the first time a new flagship Android device hasn't delivered and lived up to hype!
Why do all the Pure Google phones have to suck? (No offence N1 or G2 but N1 lacks HSPA+ and G2 is lower on processing power.)
My g2 is clocked at 1.4 ghz
Without perm root
It takes me 20 seconds to root and 20 seconds to unroot
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
These three things (SD slot, hspa+, 512 RAM) are a deal breaker for me as well. gingerbread is not really a great exclusivity because it will show up on mytouch 4g and G2 soon.
Such a beautiful phone limited by someone in product mgmt not looking at the current state of affairs in mobile hardware.

Must be a moneey thing. I wont pay $500.+ for just a front camera, and plastic.
I really don't get it. All of this leads me to the conclusion that I was a ****ing idiot for not buying the N1 the very first day it was out. All the rooting and futzing I've done with my mt3g was just to try to get it to run Navi and Pandora simultaneously. That's all I ever wanted.
If I had bought that phone on day one I would still be happy.
Don't get me wrong I love the mt4g, but I'll love it a lot more when CM6 or even CM7 are officially released.
LOL! I just noticed the capacitive buttons all have a different place compared to the Vibrant. Every. Single. Button. Moved! Wut the hell?!
Google is utterly ignorant when it comes to consistency and user experience. What a fail.
I went from HTC to Samsung (both Android phones) and had to reprogram my brain for the buttons. Why would I want to torture myself again, pressing back and exiting an app when I just wanted to open the menu, etc.
No, No, No...
Who said Nexus S was going to be a flagship?
Even the best hardware needs good software and optimization AND the hardware components must be chosen wisely to work together.
Not everything works good together. Samsung is the best at this. The hardware they choose is consistently good.
If you doubt it, then aks yourself why the Galaxy S has been released in 7 different versions, sold over 5 million times and become European Smartphone of the year!
So HTC and Motorola and whatnot may have phones with one or two good hardware components but the other components suck.
Thus they have to release lots of new phone to cover that their phones actually suck while the Galaxy S is future-proof.
The only thing Samsung couldn't do was the software part.
But Google saw the potential of Galaxy S and took care of the software problem by releasing the Nexus S with optimized Android Gingerbread.

You really believe that the MT4G will be a letdown as a total package? The only thing that bugs me is Sense, otherwise I love the look, feel and build quality.
I've had a few Samsung phones (never a smartphone) and think they make great hardware, but the GPS issues with Galaxy leave me less than impressed, especially since Navi is one of the primary reasons I love Android in the first place.

Samsung fails at hardware just as much as the other manufacturers. I don't know where you're getting this from, unless you really believe the GPS issues in Galaxy S phones are a software problem (I'm inclined not to).
Furthermore, the Hummingbird SoC is not much better than Moto's OMAP SoC in the Droid X, and it will be outperformed handily by chipsets being released soon.
The potential of Galaxy S wasn't much higher (if at all) than other phones released in that time frame. That hardware is ~8 months old now and it's nothing to rave about considering what newer phones will be releasing with - probably cheaper than this one.
And some of the ommissions (like the SD card and not upping the RAM when it's fairly obvious the phones don't have 512 MB application accessible RAM, more internal storage, more DRM/Media support, etc.) are simply laughable...
What Samsung did here is about as impressive as what HTC did with the HD7.
Put a new (though less impressively new) OS on old hardware and ripped some **** out of it, then bumped the pricetag up above practically every other smartphone on the market.
Who's gonna buy this **** when they can get Vibrants/HD7s via BOGO or cheap as hell on eBay or CraigsList due to the way T-Mobile cannibalizes the phone's value on the open market?

Agreed. I'm crowning the MT4G the current king of hardware.
For at least a week anyway.
I've been searching everywhere for a comparison thread or video or anything between the T-Mobile One S and Galaxy S3 . I right now have the One S and I am torn between this and the S3, so simple question, what phone do you think is better and why? T-mobile One S or T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 ( we pretty much know the specs)
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
As always, this is a question of tastes, likes and dislikes.
Looking only at the specs, the S3 is better.
But looking at practicability I think the One S is better.
If you don't care for the money go for the S3.
The benefits of the one s over the s3 are better price, better haptic due to the smaller screen and better touch due to the aluminium body.
On the other side the s3 comes with bigger battery, sd card support, better screen (hd), better cpu and probably the bigger fanbase in the future... Therefore more developers.
I don't use touchwiz or sense so this wouldnt matter for me.
Gesendet von meinem HTC One S mit Tapatalk 2
this is what ive been wondering. i have till the 18th to return my htc one s if i dont like it (since i get 30 days to return it here in california). ive had reboots, signal going in and out which has been driving me nuts and wifi calling dropping calls for no reason when i have full wifi signal. also i think the gs3 looks like crap to me and cheap and the htc one s looks way better, but the GS3 does have better features (IMO) then the htc one s.
Galaxy S3:
Bigger screen
HD screen
Expandable micro sd card
Bigger battery and also can be replaced
More ram 1gb vs 2gb which might not even matter
I think the cpu and gpu is the same as the htc one s
NFC
HTC One S:
Much better design and sexier
Camera software is better (i think it is)
Htc sense 4.0 (which i think is much better then touchwiz)
I figure for the money im better off with the gs3 since i paid 250 plus taxes for my one s. but i will see.
Firstly the GS 3 does NOT have a better processor, just because it is "quad" does not mean that it is better
The S/XL/X AT&T/Evo 4G LTE uses the latest snapdragon chip, the S4 dual core krait. Have a look at the benchmarks comparing the GS 3 and the HTC One S and the HTC One X (Snapdragon S4)
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-review-761p5.php
Unless you are looking at the version that the USA is getting in which case the GS 3 will then have the s4 as well.
Also just because the GS 3 has a bigger battery does not mean that it is also going to be better
Many factors affect battery life:
- screen size/type/res.
- driver/software optimization for battery
- the hardware that is used especially the CPU
etc.
So due to the bigger screen/higher res, the bigger battery is needed.
From what I have seen (from people who know what to post for screenshots regarding battery life and the required info. ) and heard from a friend (who owns the GS 3), the battery life does not sound that good, seems very average and only slightly better than the X.
Also just look at the atrix, it had a big battery, yet its battery life was terrible.
However, due to the s4 being very power efficient, the battery life could be a fair bit better than the exynos quad gs3,
version.
At least you will be able to get an extended battery though
The GS 3 only has 1GB of RAM as well (USA version has 2GB). There really is no need for any more RAM.
The GPU in the GS 3 is better (the GPU in the GS3 USA version is the same as the HTC one s [adreno 225])
So to sum up, if you want a bigger/better screen, more storage for dropbox, internal and the choice of using an SD card, NFC, better 1080P video recording (camera/photos seems good, but not a huge difference from what I can see and the HTC one/Sense V4 has a lot more features and some of them are great along with a better UI IMO) and a larger developing community go for the GS 3.
Although play with the GS 3 first and see what you think of touchwiz as I personally don't like it one bit, hate the colour scheme, modded apps and feels like a big step down from sense V4 overall IMO. Although touchwiz is tweaked very well under the bonnet.
Also you may find the GS 3 to be too big.
I think the OP is talking about the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 which will have dual core not a quad. Sure it all comes down to preference, would you like to have "TAMPERED" written to your bootloader and documented by the same company that is supposed to honor your warranty ? How bout a VGA front camera ? Maybe the atrocious cut out for the ****ty front camera? How bout poorly designed antennae that struggle to get a signal inside a building ? What about a non expandable 16gb memory device of which only about 10 is free ?
Touchwiz and Sense both hog resources, but TW is much, much lighter. The One S restarts Sense every chance it gets, and has a serious multitasking problem.

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?

That was taken with some light coming in through the window (however, it is very cloudy outside, so it would be much better when we have blue skies)
The "atrocious cut out" There is nothing wrong with it IMO.
On the other hand the notification LED is atrocious and probably the cheapest/tackiest way that HTC implemented it.
At least the entire design and looks of the S is far better than the white & pebble blue GS 3, which looks like a cheap fisher price toy IMO......
Might be built very well and durable (not as durable as the GS 2 by the looks of things though) but there is no denying that in terms of "perceived quality" the HTC handsets especially the S due to the aluminium unibody/MAO process are still leagues ahead of Samsung.

I have had my device since release day and have had no problems with the signal whatsoever no matter where I am, just took these SS when in a shopping centre in the car park level (bottom level out of three levels) and this is my signal with a H connection, which usually results in a weaker voice reception as opposed to a G/E connection:

Not an issue for some people otherwise we wouldn't have even laid eyes on the device just like the others....
Unless you plan on throwing your entire music collection (can use google music as well instead) on to your device along with films etc. then there won't be any problem with storage.
Over 500 photos including lots of 1080P recordings, along with emulator files, wallpapers etc. over 60 apps installed (including games) and I still have plenty of storage.

I have only had 2 reloads of the sense launcher when I was just using pure stock and it was only after returning from a game whilst using the browser as well. I have disabled a lot of sense widgets/apps etc. and use apex launcher, ics browser +, snowstorm weather widget, smooth calendar, APW calendar 4x4 widget, switch pro, and tasks free widget, swiftkey beta 3 and I have no problems with the multi-tasking, or any reloads whatsoever now.
And for the people who are experiencing the "serious" problems with the multi-tasking I am sure HTC will eventually release an update tweaking it or they could just root the mobile and install this app and then set the multi-tasking to what you want:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0
I have had the GS 2 (on stock ICS) right beside my 1S (complete stock sense) and the 1S was noticeably quicker and smoother in every area that I tried be it browsing, games, loading apps/menus, carrying tasks out etc.
The GS 3 seems to have just as many problems as well, seems to be some wifi problems, screen problems amongst other problems and I am sure as time goes on and more and more people get their GS 3 will see even more posts stating problems etc. just like what it was with the 1S.
No device is perfect out of the box, guaranteed that every single device will have problems, even the iphones, which are suppose "to just work out of the box" have problems with the screen, buzzing in ear piece, poor battery life for a lot of handsets and signal problems as well etc.
And just because people experience certain problems with their devices does not mean that it applies to every single handset there is in the world.....
When OP asks this question here, I assume you ask the same on s3 forum cos you will for sure have most of people recommend one s here and s3 there.
There is no definitely good or bad, or better or worse between these two. Even one s is not HTC's flagship, give it to other brands, it could enough take the crown.
We could only rationally compare the specs and provide personal preference which is so depending on individules. I wouldn't deny that s3 does have better specs in some areas but one s wins in others. And one s has a few issues such as the mao coating chipping off. But it does not stop us loving the phone, rather, it only makes us love it even more cos only when you care your device, you want it better, right? Just like me, I never know what problem s3 has and will have, simply because I don't really care, I am satisfied with my beloved one s and I am pretty sure I will keep loving it since it is almost almost perfect.
So, the best way to find out which one to get, is to see the specs first, then find out any issues with both, especially if there is any deal breaking one, if you still cannot decide, go play with both in your local shops and feel them yourselves. However, I do recommend avoiding black one s cos it has hardware issue, but grey one is fine.
In the end I would say, I lovey my one s! Hope lots of people do the same (of course, try love your one s, not mine )

if you're mad about the reboots and random issues it has when it first came out don't think the s3 is going to be perfect and bug free either cause you're going to be dissapointed if you gave up ur one S for a rebooting brick

this is what ive been wondering. i have till the 18th to return my htc one s if i dont like it (since i get 30 days to return it here in california). ive had reboots, signal going in and out which has been driving me nuts and wifi calling dropping calls for no reason when i have full wifi signal. also i think the gs3 looks like crap to me and cheap and the htc one s looks way better, but the GS3 does have better features (IMO) then the htc one s.
Galaxy S3:
Bigger screen
HD screen
Expandable micro sd card
Bigger battery and also can be replaced
More ram 1gb vs 2gb which might not even matter
I think the cpu and gpu is the same as the htc one s
NFC
HTC One S:
Much better design and sexier
Camera software is better (i think it is)
Htc sense 4.0 (which i think is much better then touchwiz)
I figure for the money im better off with the gs3 since i paid 250 plus taxes for my one s. but i will see.

Im in the EXACT same boat as you. I got my One S for 290 on Tmo with upgrade and am looking to sell back my One S for the GSiii. The only thing is I have til the end of this week to decide! Haha. If I sell back to T-Mo, will I be able to upgrade again?
Regarding reboots, since release day pretty much, I have only had 2 reboots and they both happened when I was using swiftkey beta 3, so it may have been related to that app due to it being in "beta" stages.....
Haven't had any more reboots since the latest beta version and update for the 1S *touch wood*

yeah u can still upgrade if u return it within the 30 days or whatever days u have. i probably will trade mine back in right before it ends. it just depends on how much the gs3 cost me. i cant stand no micro sd card expansion. i know we get drop box but what good is drop box when ur out and u get crappy 2g? its pretty much useless and so is google music. this is why i would much rather have expandable memory so i dont have to rely on my internet connection. it just sucks to give up such a sexy ass device plus i normally hate samsung and love htc but i feel like im getting more for my money if the gs3 cost me the same as the htc one s cost me. if it cost more then i will stick with the one s.

That is the exact same reason I am considering switching over for. Thanks for the reply, nice to know I get my upgrade privilege back. If you find out how much the GSiii will cost on upgrade, please let me know. I will do the same for you
EDIT: I read Samsung states that the newest device should be 199 with contract (upgrade I assume as well if TMo is good). So same price if not cheaper if TMo does or doesn't have the 50 mail in rebate like with the One S (at least for me in Chicago). I found that on THIS article.

Sweet if its 199 with no rebates then I will get it asap. I paid 250 plus tax and over night shipping which cost me 340 which is kinda to much money for this phone. I sent the rebate in but it can take up to 8 weeks to get my 50

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?
Is the front camera really that important? Out of all my friends and family that I know who also have a front camera on their android phones, no one actually uses it......
The quality isn't amazing, but it isn't terrible....

I agree with this post almost completely.....except that I am definately having the data issue. I am hoping against hope that the ghost firmware update will correct this.
I returned mine yesterday and am having the same problem with this second one.
Edit-I think I'm in a fringe/low lieing area. I never get a real good signal, but the indicator fluctuates wildly. Mostly at 1-2 bars or less.
I myself would choose the One S over the SIII. Which I did.
I was a little concerned about the battery but it has turned out to be a non issue. Battery life is superb!
Changed my mind. I am sticking with the One S. Build quality is wayyyy better plus I would have to shoot myself in the groin if I had to deal with TouchWiz, even for one day. It's nice that you can have much more memory, but that's about it.

So they're asking me which one do I want. I'd rather have something like a Router, or NAS, but they are insisting on getting me a phone or a camera. Since my Current phone is a pretty old Nokia phone. I have a desktop which i use most of the day.

Sony Ericsson Xperia S (I heard the battery timing is low) (not much of resale value here)
Galaxy S2 (A bit of an older series)
Galaxy Note ( A bit more expensive)
Wont be using 3G / 4G much except for when travelling. Need good battery timing, even with WLAN enabled. Something with a good camera, touch focus, flash etc.

Yes the S2 works well to, between the two devices the hardware is pretty much the same.
The differences are, Galaxy Note has the 5.2 inch screen and a bigger battery to make sure that beast of screen has enough power. Oh and the spen which is pretty call but I dont use it much.
It depends on which price you would let them extend too~ Huawei have great spec devices for a lot lower prices, worth a look.

Any good models that come to mind? I thought Huawei is poor quality. Can extend the budget , and there are used mobiles that would come in that much.
I would look for something from HTC.
Dont scream at me - samsung is very slippery (both galaxy s and s2) and doesn't appeal to me with build quality. I know, they are quite sturdy, just they look plastic.

Might want to consider the galaxy nexus. Pure vanilla and timely updates, as well as a large hacking community.
5mp camera is its specs, but I heard its quite good. Remember, no matter how many mp a camera is, it all comes down to the lenses

Thanks for the info, yeah it depends on the lens and the sensor, i've been a major fan of the nexus, since the start. Some say there's a noticeable performance of the galaxy s2 over the galaxy nexus.
Almost double the battery and a bit bigger screen with higher ppi Faster than the S2 according to this:

The note sub forum is your friend, plenty of guides to do everything under the sun http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1346
I would say either go for something like the HTC One S or the Galaxy Nexus GSM
I'm in a similar situation. I'm between the Nexus and Note- made this thread about the topic. Most are suggesting the Nexus. IMO, I think the Note is the best in your list and the Nexus, if you can afford it, should be considered. The problem is that you may have a different opinion than the guys on here so I would suggest trying the phones out in a local shop before you buy them.
My next phone will be a Galaxy SIII, really loved this phone and all its properties!
Hello All,
I'm looking at picking up a Maxx HD, but I had some questions about a few components from those of you who have it. My three concerns are:
1. Processor - is dual core quick enough? Quad cores are coming out now, but I'm not sure how long I can wait, probably not beyond Jan, not sure what new there will be by then.
2. Ram - is 1gb enough? See any issues maxing this out?
3. Camera - This one is important to me, I want it to take some decent pics but I've read some bad things about the pics taken from the camera on this phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, looking for at least that quality in the pictures (I know it's an older one). I've also heard that the JB leaks give a boost to the camera as well.
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

1. I was using a Galaxy Nexus for several months and that that phone was fast and smooth. The processor in the Razr HD is even faster. For speed, it really comes down to software at this point and the Razr has the closest skin to OEM. I don't see much of a difference when jumping from dual-core to quad-core unless you're crazy about benchmarks. At some point, benchmarks become meaningless - everything is so fast that the user won't notice a difference even though the scores may be substantially different.
2. My phone has been running for four days without a reboot or any task killing. I have have 239 MB free. Sure some phones have 2 GB of RAM but maybe they need it because their skins or so heavy. I don't have an issue with this phone and the 1 GB.
3. Sorry, I haven't used the camera much. I have taken two pictures and they came out nice
I wanted to add this in case it helps:
Some phones may come out that are faster UIs (like the Nexus 4) but the fact that this phone has LTE and the most amazing battery life in the market (I have the MAXX). Over the weekend I was at 27% after 53 hours off of the charger and nearly 6 hours of screen time. The fact the you can use your phone without worrying about running out of juice is priceless. Also, the phone comes with ICS out of the box. I'm running the JB and I can tell you that it's much smoother and basically all lag was eliminated with the update. The official OTA may be even better.
I got a screaming deal on the MAXX so ended up getting 2 and this is what I have found so far:
1. First thing I did was install the JB leak and it is now considerably faster. ICS really is what's holding the phone back. UI is buttery smooth.
2. Memory management is actually pretty good because the skin is pretty damn close to stock. With most stuff I use being open I have 300mb free right now.
3. The stock moto camera app sucks, the nexus 4 one is a lot better and gets rid of shutter lag completely.
I came from iPhone land and so far I am very impressed with this phone, plus the battery lasts forever.

For #3, are you saying there is a 4.2 camera replacement in the market? Or are you just comparing the the Nexus 4?
You can't always judge speed based on counting cores (http://www.tmonews.com/2012/05/editorial-why-a-snapdragon-s4-galaxy-s-iii-is-awesome/). As a previous poster said, the Galaxy Nexus is dual-core, and runs very smooth. I have the Razr HD, and there are many times when I think it runs better than my quad-core Nexus 7. This device is fast, and JB will make it faster.
I would of course prefer 2GB of memory. But it's really not a huge issue. Android will keep as much in RAM as it sees fit, and when it runs low, suspend apps to make room for the current one. What this means is that when you switch back to the suspended app, Android will restore it (assuming the app developer coded well). The end result is: More memory means apps get suspended less often, but unless you are a very heavy multitasker, you probably won't notice much of a difference at this point.
I can't speak much about the camera. I've heard some complaints, but I don't really have any. I would suggest you take some photos in the store, and see. I have a variety of third party camera apps, and am OK.
This phone has the same processors as the US version of the S3. Same GPU. Roughly the same screen. Really nice build quality. Awesome battery life.
It's a killer device.
Thanks for all the info. So in regards to the camera, are you saying that I'll get better shots with the Nexus 4 camera app? Meaning it's a software issue limiting the camera quality not hardware? That eases my nerves a bit. Thanks to both of you for the advice!

1. The processor seems more than adequate, I don't notice a difference between it and the Note 2 or DNA, they are all very smooth.
2. I didn't notice the RAM holding this phone back either, I'd say it's fine for now but it will cause problems down the road when newer OS versions come out. That's a major reason why older phones are no longer able to be upgraded (so the manufacturers claim)
3. The camera sucks, plain and simple. This is one of two reasons why I returned my MAXX HD unfortunately.
Another note:
A Best Buy employee told me that they have a 14 day return policy with no restocking fee on upgrades. They have a 30 exchange period. So you can try a phone out for bit and exchange it for another one with no penalty. If you have for more than 14 days, you're forced to upgrade and you can't return the phone (but can exchange it).
Finally, my Best Buy price matched Amazon Wireless so I got the MAXX HD for $174.99
So the consensus seems to be the camera isn't very good. How would it compare coming from an older phone? I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so my camera is a bit behind the times too, will it be worse than that? I don't want to step backwards, but not as good as some out there isn't a problem for me.
Thanks,
Tim
The camera is the only problem of this mobile.Les photos are beautiful but the autofocus is long.
Super mobile ......love

I imagine the camera has to be better than my old iPhone 4 and that's all I'm looking for I guess is the same or improved. If I'm wrong here please correct me. I don't need an amazing camera as I'll use my DSLR, but I want it to be good. I don't mind trying and returning if I don't like it, the problem is that I'm on AT&T now and have to port my number to try it, then port my number back to AT&T if I go with the One X+ instead (the other phone I was considering).
Thanks,
Tim

I think the camera is actually nice when you switch the app and I came from an iPhone 4 as well. As far as porting you can always open the new line on verizon with a new number and then if you decide to keep the phone you can port your number later. That way you can get a One X+ with ATT to try out and the RAZR as well.
I will say this though that this phone does look a lot better built than the One X and even the Droid DNA but then again I have never considered HTC phones to have that great of build quality anyway.
Very good, thanks for all the info! I think I've decided, unless something new comes out in the next month, looking at getting it right after Christmas.
I can get a 16gb nexus 5 and LG G2 base model for around the same price (give or take 20 dollars) Which one would you choose? My concern about the nexus 5 is its battery life, which the G2 is great at.
Thanks for the input!

Between the two at this exact moment, I'd take the LG G2 personally because battery life is quite important to me in a portable device of most any kind. Reviews show it has fantastic battery life (meaning the G2) and I doubt seriously - considering the size of the battery in the Nexus 5 - that the Nexus 5 will get anywhere near what the G2 is proving quite capable of.
So, for me the LG G2 would be a no-brainer since we know KitKat will be showing up quite soon since the source is available - we just had a 4.4 build created by houstonn for the LGOG which I happen to have, it's mostly functional but I'm sure soon enough it will be 100% to go.

Agreed. If battery is your main concern and the price is similar, I would choose the G2. Battery isn't that important to me though. All I really need from a phone is a full average day on a single charge and I think I will get that from the N5. I get a full day with my N4 on most days, but I run it conservatively.
I have a G2 now, and I get 2-3 days with the G2 and I get 1-2 days with the Note 3.

Another possible benefit to the G2 is that has Audience's Earsmart noise cancellation chip. It remains to be seen if the Nexus 5 will have it, but since it would impose extra licensing fees, I'm guessing it's more likely than not that the Nexus 5 won't have it (Google has to cut corners somewhere, to sell the Nexus 5 for a low price).
Audience's noise cancellation chip is by far the best noise cancellation out there. Much better than Qualcomm's native solution Fluence (which the Nexus 4 uses). The Nexus One had the Audience chip and was one of the first phones to use it. I really miss that. I could be in super loud environments and people thought I was at home. The Nexus 4 has been a huge step down in this respect. After the Nexus One, the iPhone 4 used the Audience chip (and of course everyone acted like Apple invented noise cancellation, even though they were late comers to the game). In any case, it got much praise on the iPhone 4. But it has been dropped from the iPhone 5 for Apple's own in house solution and the (very few) critics how pay attention to this have pointed out that it's much worse. These days for the most part it's only Samsung that consistently uses the Audience chip in its top tier phones.
Anyway, I care a lot about call quality, so I'd really like the have the Audience chip again. I'm still waiting to see if it's in the Nexus 5. But if I had to decide now, without knowing, that would definitely be a feature pulling me toward the G2 instead.
I would take the G2 because of the battery life and camera performance ... and I'm saying this while I bought the nexus 5
im lucky that the price is so different!
it would be horribly tough to work it out.
g2 is clearly the better phone. better accu, bigger screen, better camera.
but hell man...nexus5 will have 18 month of Top noth Updates PLUS the Community will blow minds becwuse it will be THE device they All have and develope for. with the g2 you wont have that.
i keep telling people that Not the Hardware is the big Star of the cellphone but the Software is.
So choice is as the Situation is thaaaaat easy for me.
I had both and I'd recommend the Nexus 5 any second. KitKat runs super smooth and I love the looks! I hate the glossy plastic on the G2 and I totally love the soft silky back of the N5. I have been touching it nonstop for the last hour. I might need professional help.

+1 in a couple weeks, there'll be some announcement where this cpu is better than etc etc. Hardware gets better all the time but software more or less stays the same and that's what we as users can compete on. Not on the hardware because something will be better in a matter of weeks / months etc.
If having a good community in terms of rom and kernels as well as receiving the newest and latest android on a stock android experience matters to you then a nexus phone is a no Brainer.

I'm still disappointed with the 2300 mah battery, I would have been totally satisfied with a 2600 mah battery...
Better accu? :silly: this forum is filled with Germans , I love when i realize that I'm not the only one who keeps mixing the languages

yeah happens.. *smile*
but accumulator is Not wrong either in english i guess....but yeah native english speakers Do say battery All the time.
/edit: but it seems BATTERY seems ok from One can read from others. but be careful with that Information! people are still hyped to the Max with the new device the may get too euphoric about it.
Hard decision but honestly I got burned hard by the Optimus 2X and anyone else who owned that phone would likely agree with me, it was a solid phone but the software support was horrendous (not helped by Nvidia...). The only reason I got the Nexus 4 was the fact it was made by LG which make QUALITY hardware but lack a large software dev team so as the Nexus is done by Google it was a very easy decision . I wouldnt leave the Nexus series so long as it stays at the price point of £300 as the developer community alone is amazing, so many talented developers working on one device we would never get left in the dark.
The G2 is a better device interms of battery life but for me the device size definitely goes past the perfect spot which is the N4 and N5 (width is important!). Would I have paid extra if the N5 had a stepped battery in it, of course I would as I do want longer battery life but I think the N5 will meet my requirement now as its better than the N4! I think the decider for me if they were the same price would be the developer community as I would go for the one with the biggest following, if the G2 can keep up with the N5 in terms of custom rom android versions then it would be fine and I would be tempted but still would need to hold it in the hand as I think its too wide.
Tough call! Would wait till Jan before deciding on the community personally.
I would get Nexus 5. I don't use my phone 8 hours a day and I don't live in the woods so I have access to the charger most of the time.

Do you assume that after 18 months Google will no longer update the N5?

Honestly, after Google said they stopped supporting the Galaxy Nexus I'm not that optimistic either. But it doesn't matter to me since this is a Nexus.

that is what Google says and seems to be the reason why the samsun nexus does Not get updates any more.
possibly because of Qualcomm being the cpu we may get Lucky to get One Last Update after that 18 month.
only time will tell.
As of what we Do Know now...we should shot expect Updates after the 18 month.

Google did say the reason that the Gnex will no longer get updates... Im not a fortune teller but I think Qualcomm will survive more than 18 months.
Either way, once I see that the N5 will stop getting updates, that will be the moment when I root my phone.

What reasons, this is all I see so far: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/3468085?hl=en
And if its because TI is no longer making the chips, that's not convincing, while I'm no developer, TI OMAP chips are much more open than Qualcomm (which is why they are found in a lot of other opensource linux devices) so even if Google receives no help from TI it should still be easier to release KitKat for it than with a Qualcomm device having to deal with more proprietary codes (one of the reason a Nexus 7 factory image was temporary pulled).
Anyway, what ever the reason its unfounded and here is why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development
Exactly - the reason for the lack of a 4.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus is because TI basically pulled out of ARM chip making and they won't provide support to Google so Google has no choice but to pull out of any potential updates for that particular device.
In time I'm sure you'll see a 4.4+ ROM appear soon enough for the Galaxy Nexus. Hell, if old devices like the Galaxy S can run 4.3 (and it does, surprisingly well, probably will run 4.4 too without a problem) you can be positive that 4.4 will make it's way to the Galaxy Nexus soon enough.
But it's not Google that pulled the plug for that update, it was Texas Instruments...
