[Q] What Android Phone should I buy? - General Questions and Answers

Hey, my family is insisting they buy me an smart phone for my 21st Birthday.
So they're asking me which one do I want. I'd rather have something like a Router, or NAS, but they are insisting on getting me a phone or a camera. Since my Current phone is a pretty old Nokia phone. I have a desktop which i use most of the day.
I think the budget would be close to 400$. We will not be using a contract phone. They are considering the
iPhone4(S) [Used] (I was thinking of stepping out of iOS and using An Android Phone since most of the users are iOS in my house),
Sony Ericsson Xperia S (I heard the battery timing is low) (not much of resale value here)
Galaxy S2 (A bit of an older series)
Galaxy Note ( A bit more expensive)
Wont be using 3G / 4G much except for when travelling. Need good battery timing, even with WLAN enabled. Something with a good camera, touch focus, flash etc.
I am a heavy Computer user, texter, browse a lot of forums, like linux, WEP cracking etc.
Any suggestions? Most of these models are at least 8 Months old. The S3 is a bit overpriced and not as good as the HTC One X

xperia arc s

Get the Galaxy Note, its the best dam phone out there! (ok so yes its the phone i have but still )
And if you love linux even better, it works very well with my linuxonandroid project

Is the note faster than the S2? And I like huge screens, wont be carrying it around much maybe. Will use it as a secondary phone. Does the S2 work with the linuxandroid project?

Yes the S2 works well to, between the two devices the hardware is pretty much the same.
The differences are, Galaxy Note has the 5.2 inch screen and a bigger battery to make sure that beast of screen has enough power. Oh and the spen which is pretty call but I dont use it much.

It depends on which price you would let them extend too~ Huawei have great spec devices for a lot lower prices, worth a look.

Any good models that come to mind? I thought Huawei is poor quality. Can extend the budget , and there are used mobiles that would come in that much.

I would look for something from HTC.
Dont scream at me - samsung is very slippery (both galaxy s and s2) and doesn't appeal to me with build quality. I know, they are quite sturdy, just they look plastic.

I like HTC as well, but which model? They're slightly more expensive as compared to samsung, with lower specs and great build quality.
Yeah their Cases got that plastic-y look to them. Especially the behind cover.
I will be using a a case on whatever phone im using. my hands get sweatyy
Also, i would like to say, this phone is going to be with me long longggg longgg time 5 years? (if it lasts hopefully) and so i want a phone with gorilla glass, or a strong front panel ..

Might want to consider the galaxy nexus. Pure vanilla and timely updates, as well as a large hacking community.
5mp camera is its specs, but I heard its quite good. Remember, no matter how many mp a camera is, it all comes down to the lenses

Thanks for the info, yeah it depends on the lens and the sensor, i've been a major fan of the nexus, since the start. Some say there's a noticeable performance of the galaxy s2 over the galaxy nexus.
Almost double the battery and a bit bigger screen with higher ppi Faster than the S2 according to this:

I recently got a Galaxy S3 with ATT. It's been pretty solid so far, especially after rooting and some tweaking. A large phablet like the Note would be nice, but the Snapdragon S3 it uses turns me off.

Battery is removable but yeah, no SD. Bugs me too. I haven't checked to drop tests, ill edit my post in a few min when I do.
Also, I never knew the camera is actually better than the S2's thanks for that link!
EDIT: like they said, its only gonna break if its facedown. But its completely destroyed when it is. Lcd and digitizer but I think a high quality screen protector will solve the problem, if u don't mind having screen protectors that is

The note sub forum is your friend, plenty of guides to do everything under the sun http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1346

I would say either go for something like the HTC One S or the Galaxy Nexus GSM

I'm in a similar situation. I'm between the Nexus and Note- made this thread about the topic. Most are suggesting the Nexus. IMO, I think the Note is the best in your list and the Nexus, if you can afford it, should be considered. The problem is that you may have a different opinion than the guys on here so I would suggest trying the phones out in a local shop before you buy them.

My next phone will be a Galaxy SIII, really loved this phone and all its properties!

Problem is that the specs aren't attracting developers, the size isn't always practical, the mhl, while great for movies defend inconvenient, most developers don't have interest in hdmi especially with so much proprietary stuff making it work. Developers are attracted to devices with new hardware and less proprietary.
I think its a great phone but the gs2 on att is a better phone for me and many others. That's not to say i'm getting the gs2, or if I do that I'd get rid of my infuse, but the size is much more practical, and the hardware blows the infuse away. All I know is I won't get the galaxy nexus, it is way to big, I like too type with my thumb holding the phone with one hand that's hard enough on the infuse.
^ Damn google's curved phones are ugly as hell and look like a pocket vibrator for women or something. And that really serves no purpose. It's next to most peoples' faces, what 10 or 20 minutes a day? It would make sense if you used your phone 24/7..

IIRC the nexus is slightly longer but slightly less wide than the infuse. So to say it isn't a bigger phone isn't entirely true. The form factor is just a little different. The extra length of the Nexus is what ruins it for me, the infuse barely fits in my pocket and at times is uncomfortable there (see driving). Any longer and it is a deal breaker.

Maybe, I can see the aspect ratio is slightly longer but with the extra .15 inches of screen its got to be as wide add the infuse. Massive not the body of the phone but at least the screen, I'd actually prefer a 16x9 screen at 4.2 inches like the Sony arc. The infuse and many other phone screens are between 16x9 and 16x10. Closer to 16x10
I haven't seen published dimensions of the phone or screen but I guess I can do the math for the screen, either easy I'd prefer something slimmer.

Keep in mind that with ICS/the Galaxy Nexus the capacitive buttons have been repalced with the on-sceen menu/buttons, so that bottom portion of the "screen" is measured in the screen dimensions,

how does that work?
like right now we have capacitive buttons, which mean the screen(usually) holds a dock with 3,4,5, buttons (phone, message, browser, ect)
if you do away with the soft keys, and move them to the screen....where will the Dock options go....seems like it maybe more cluttered.
Maybe wrong, im just curious<<<

Just imagine that your screen stretched down a little lower and the soft keys are on it. Look up some pics/vids of the galaxy nexus devcie you will see what it looks like, I think it looks smooth!
http://www.google.com/nexus/
it should be the 2nd best selling phone, I love my infuse!
Did some math, the sgs2 screen should be 2.195 inches by 3.660 (rounded to the nearest 5 thou) the infuse is 2.315 by 3.860 and the galaxy nexus is 2.280 by 4.050
So the sgs2 vs the infuse in almost an 8th of an inch, or 3mm, the galaxy nexus screen is actually about .040 narrower than the infuse or about 1 mm. still gonna be too wide for some people, but that extra 5mm in length over the infuse is gonna be noticeable when watching movies. The extra 10mm or a bit over 3/8 inch is gonna make the gs2 look tiny.
For any one that can't picture how this works without capacitive buttons picture the infuse but imagine you're capacitive buttons are a little higher and actually part of the screen, imagine watching movies and the screen extends to the bottom of the phone. Its that big!

New hardware isn't really the attraction - COMMON hardware is. There isn't really anything "new" about it, especially in comparison to the I9100 - and THAT is the key, the fact that there is very little that IS new is a good thing.
The AT&T GS2 has 95%+ commonality with the I9100.
The Infuse - It's a hybrid bastard child, CPU and many things are closer to the I9000, screen and display controller are closer to I9100, bluetooth/GPS aren't close to ANYTHING.
The end result is that for updates, we are dependent on carrier releases from AT&T or Rogers for the Infuse.
For the GS2 - the I9100, just like the I9000, gets VERY frequent updates because there isn't any carrier middleman.
So yeah, tons of people may be buying it - that doesn't mean that it ceases to be a developer's nightmare from hell.

Got mine for 200 on craigslist... was indeed a steal.... i love this thing.... plus someone mentioned that you can use boxnet as your android market and install apk's from there.... so awesome... i do have a iphone 4 with unlimited data so i dont want to switch my sim card in and out in risk of losing it.... but its wonderful to say the least!!
and also.... yes the galaxy s 2 has better specs.... but its similiar with the iphone 4 and 4s.... unless you have them by each other.... you wont really notice the difference or care for that matter....
You will NOT lose your unlimited data. The only thing you need is a new "4g" sim card. It connects to.a different APN

well what i mean is that... at&t still thinks im using a iphone 2g... so im being charged 20 dollars for unlimted 2g... instead of 30 dollar for unlimited 3g... dont want to risk being caught... LOL... I feel at&t owes me so im in no rush to tell them
Oh I see .. did the offer to let u keep the unlimited with the 10$ hike if you did switch? .. if so, I would jump on that so you can lock in your unlimited data in case you might want to grab one of the new LTE phones in the future. You will be grandfathered. $10 for a future network and blazing speeds might be worth it. What I did to offset a little bit of the price was drop my minute plan to the lowest plan available since with unlimited messaging you get unlimited any mobile now ..
Oh and enjoy your Infuse!

HTC One Vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

I have seen SO many threads about the pro's and con's of both handsets and most are based on bias because people just want to justify their purchase one way or another or are comparing 5 minutes of use in a shop with their every day phone. I have now got both phones and here is my "opinion" of the pros and cons for both....
Screen:
The One's screen is stunning but feels small compared to the S4 and while I am one of those people who prefers the unnatural oversaturated colours offered by the S4 the sharpness seems way better on the one. Icons on the S4 have a slight fuzzy look to them compare to the One like a JPG being stretched. Could all be down to the screen size which as I said I much prefer the S4's larger screen.
Design:
This is a lot of preference but anyone who says the S4 is better looking than the One is on crack or like I said justifying their own purchase. The Samsung's plastic obviously has benefits like being able to change the back cover when it is scratched and removable to access the battery or SD card (which I don't care about the battery as I don't keep phones for longer than 12 months usually and as long as the phone has ample storage for me I am fine). Also the plastic on the S4 feels greasy and gets dirty with fingerprints very easily. One thing that a lot of people don't like that Samsung keeps doing but I love is the physical home button. The fact I can with one hand turn the phone on with the home button is WAY better than the two handed approach with the One which the power can only be turned on by the power button on the top left. On a funny note I left my old S3 on the S4 box in my office and someone walked in and picked it up and said "wow how amazing is the new S4 it looks so much better than the S3", might be a good thing because people obviously like the look but it shows that the 4 isn't that big of a difference from the 3.
Camera:
This has been done to death but believe me that both are great. If the HTC had a 8mp camera it would be the definitive Android phone but it doesn't. Both has a lot of tricks and features and both do a great job. The HTC does a better job with low light and with moving objects and the S4 has way more details.
Sound:
HTC wins this hands down. Not only with the built in speaks but with headphones too. Samsungs audio player also pales in comparison to HTC's which is as with everything on the HTC beautiful and consistent with the resat of the OS but also correctly downloads album art and lyrics to play in a Karaoke mode.
Software:
This one I am really in two minds about and my comparison is purely on stock.. The HTC's new Sense is pretty amazing. Its fast and has a consistency in its look that Samsung should take note of. I have owned a S2 and S3 and Touchwiz has barely changed. Why is the SMS app black but the mail app is white and the calendar app is a wooden brown? It seriously feels like Samsung has way too many programmers working on Android and gave them all one app or part of the interface to work on and didn't allow them to communicate to the other people to get a consistent look. Its ugly and isn't customisable in many situations. I have shown people the S4 and they marvel at how smooth it is but until you actually run it along side the One for a period its hard to describe how much smoother the One is. Never stutters never and little pauses or skipping of animations like the S4 does. On the other hand all the things the S4 can do are cool, if not gimmicky and useless. Samsung have better support from developers and as such things like my Fitbit sync wirelessly with the S4 but not my One, Grindr crashes constantly on the One and more. Support for the one is pretty amazing already and its still brand new. I also love the fact I can download a ROM and easily install it which you can not do easily on the HTC. I only every use stock but I will use the Stock UK or American or German or what ever version is the newest as here in Australia new ROM are usually released pretty slowly. It becomes an addiction every day looking if a new Android version or ROM has been released to install and try on your Samsung. 90% of the S4's new features I have turned off, they aren't guaranteed to work 100% of the time and can be more trouble than they are worth. Example Smart stay... this rarely happens but it does happen and did happen with my S3 too is that I will put the phone down on my desk at work and it will never turn the screen off, some how it thinks my office's ceiling is a face and stays on. The one feature I do love of the S4 is the one where you wave your hand over it and it lights up for a few seconds to show the clock and alerts then turns back off. Also something simple that the S4 does that the HTC doesn't which I didn't realise until I had both was when you get a message or alert the Samsung turns the screen on and displays it (admittedly in an ugly pastel coloured but for SMS's) but the HTC will never turn the screen on unless you press the power button. I will also mention that Samsung's Touchwiz also seems unpolished and incomplete, little things like the MP3 player on the lock screen not correctly fitting and cutting the bottom off just makes me think again that Samsung's developers didn't work together to produce a single OS but instead a mish mash of individual bits to make one up (maybe they rushed it out to steal some of HTC's thunder).
Hardware:
Obviously Samsung wins this hands down but once again with Touchwiz slowing down the S4 the One just feels faster. Benchmarks are great but you don't live your life in a benchmark how the phone functions in every day use is what counts. All the sensors and support that Samsung has is way better than HTC. Just simple things like putting a magnet in the phone so covers know when they are closed and turn the phone off. Simple yet awesome. The fact that Samsung continues to make a flagship phone with only 16gb and then used up over half of it with is ugly bloated OS is just beyond forgiveness. So many people say well use the SD card but always remember that you can not install apps to the SD card and a few big games and your phone can be full. HTC has a 32 and 64gb model readily available here in Australia and I guarantee that the 32 and 64gb models of the S4 NEVER get launched here just like they did with the S3. SO many promises broken, no size over 16gb and no wireless charger released even though they showed them off at the launch.
Battery:
Both easily got me through a days use. The HTC didn't last as long in standby and the S4 didn't last as long in use so they pretty much evened each other out. The fact the S4 supports wireless charging is a huge plus for me. People ***** about its useless and not as fast as a cable but they obviously don't get it. With wireless Qi charging you can still use the cable when your in a hurry and need a fast charge but the convenience of just sitting the phone on my desk charger at work and its charging is priceless. I work 9-5 so if it sits on the charger for 8 hours then its never going to go flat on me. I don't have to worry about one of the staff stealing my Micro USB cable (which happens all the time) or even looking for a cable its just amazingly convenient to sit it down and its charging. I have ordered one of those Chinese Wireless Qi inserts for the S4 and cant wit to use it. You cant add that to the One and the One is very slow charging. VERY SLOW.
Conclusion:
Both phones are the pinnacle of Android technology right now for mobile phones and both deserve to be hugely successful. In the end I stuck with the S4 as my every day phone simply because the support it has from app developers like fitbit like I mentioned before, optional wireless charging, the home button, the screen size and the fact I can flash ROMs when ever I feel like it. Every now and then I think I have made a mistake and should keep using the One, mainly when I look at how ugly Touchwiz is and when I get stutters in the OS which is unforgiveable for a phone with this kind of power. All the flaws in the S4 can be fixed with software and I one day hope Samsung wakes up and makes Touchwiz have the same beautiful look and constancy of Sense, till then I will download other apps to replace Samsung's and hope the speed issues are resolved in updates in the future which I can flash so easily when ever I want to.
thanks for the recap on every other review out there. you are in the s4 forum, therefore s4 > htc one to all users here who arent trolls.

You are not talking about exynos variant right?
HTC One Cons:
- CID based roms
- Locked Bootloader, unlocking it will cost you a part of you warranty and a lot of anger if turned in for repair
- Slow updates
- Hboot versions determines wether you can flash/update a rom
This for me is enough not to buy any HTC even if it would be made of gold
iphone!
I was using the S600 9505 variant. And my post may have gone over things that reviews and such may have mentioned but no review covers it all and I have not seen a single review mention things like the fact the HTC screen doesn't turn on to show notifications.

Wow, yet another biased review that makes out its unbiased.....Jesus.
Couple of points:
With TW, you can change the background of the SMS app, if that annoys you? So what if its a different colour to the mail app.

What do you mean bias? Seems like your here to defend your decision to buy the S4. I have used both phones for weeks and I gave my observations. Simple. Not biased. I still love my S4 and that's what I am using today so I am hardly here to bash it.

Couple of points:
With TW, you can change the background of the SMS app, if that annoys you? So what if its a different colour to the mail app.

Finally a comparison between the two. I couldn't find any.
WTF guys?! This is the general thread. OP had both devices and felt like posting his thoughts. You dont like? Move the #$^#$^ along and keep your opinions to yourself.
I dont get cretins that like Unibody design phones with no storage expansion.
Ok, on built 32 GB of space is ok, its just that when you already have a nice and good microSD card, you would need to throw that thing away and you would need to tediously copy the data from the sd card to the phone.
What about the battery? After 2 years, if you intend to keep the phone, your battery is going to be much weaker than when you bought it. Batteries get weaker with time and lose their performancel.
Sure you can keep going on, but good luck using that thing with 50% or less battery performance after 2 years.

These types of threads are funny and fairly frequent. OP, this is what you're essentially saying - "everyone else's opinion isn't as good as mine so let me tell you what's really going on." And there's bias throughout your post and that's OK; but call it that. Everyone wants different things so their view is always going to take that in to account no matter how objective they try to be. I like Samsung's s/w features and Sense doesn't even have Awake Stay. So if I were to review TW vs. Sense which do you think I'd like best? But that's just me and I know I'm in the minority; at least on XDA. When expressing an individual opinion the best approach is to state your position, describe how you use your device, share your findings and then let others draw a conclusion based on their needs as to which phone or feature is "best."
Iphones?

If i had to choose between the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, it would be the Galaxy S4 by a long mile. Or not really since i already have the Samsung Galaxy S4 now

There are many reasons why i did choose the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One. And maybe some of my reasons are the same reasons for you to choose the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One. I'm gonna write down all of my reasons to buy the Galaxy S4 here, so this post might get pretty long.
1. Polycarbonate body. Since this Polycarbonate body is made out of some kind of plastic, it doesn't spread the heat around your whole hand when the phone gets hot. Yes, alumininum looks and feels great, but it have a negative side because aluminum spreads the heat way more out than plastic does. Therefor, the HTC One will spread the heat to your whole hand instead of having the heat on one place only when it gets hot, like it is on the Galaxy S4.
This article shows how hot the Galaxy S4 gets under heavy usage and where the heat is and how the heat spreads out: http://blog.gsmarena.com/thermal-im...rfaces-shows-that-the-device-rarely-gets-hot/
2. HTC One gets alot hotter than the Galaxy S4 according to NordicHardware's test of the Galaxy S4. And therefor my reason number 1 is pretty valid. The article is in Swedish though, so if you want it translated, then use Google Translate.
I see some complaints that the Galaxy S4 gets pretty hot for someone. And if the Galaxy S4 gets that hot, then the HTC One for sure gets even hotter and even more bad to hold.
3. It have a microSD card slot. So yeah, i'm currently using a Samsung MicroSDXC Pro UHS-1 64 GB Class 10 card in my Galaxy S4 witch is great. Taking tons if pictures and recoring alot of videos when you are on a vacation is going to take up a HUUUUUGE amount of space. And not to mention that 1080p movies are needed when you have a 1080p screen. And those 1080p movies can take huge amount of space to. Same goes to alot of mp3 files / musics.
4. It have a removable battery witch means you can change out to a fully charged battery when you are out of battery on your main battery in 10 seconds. This allows you to keep doing what you are doing without having a big massive brick of a battery pack with you witch will be in your way when you are using the phone.
Or you can even buy a bigger battery that gives you over 3000 mAh (an example) witch will last you for ages.
5. It have a cleaner and better design than the HTC One. This is my opinion after holding and looking at the HTC One.
6. 5 inch screen is better than 4.7 inch screen. Specially when the Galaxy S4 are smaller in size than the HTC One.
7. The Super AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S4 is way better than the IPS LCD screen on the HTC One, because you can choose if you want the colors to really pop or if you just want to have perfect color accuracy (thanks to the Adobe RGB / Professional Photo mode) on the phone.
8. It have Android 4.2.2 witch is better than Android 4.1.2 that the HTC One have.
9. Samsung releases Android updates way faster than HTC.
10. It have alot of sensors witch i find great. No other smartphones have this many sensor inside a phone.
11. It have tons of cool and handy features witch i mean is there to bring the development of the current smartphones forward rather than just updating something you already have or something existing on your phone or just stand still like iOS have done since 2009. Some of the features the Galaxy S4 have doesn't really works optimal yet, but i still think it's pretty nice to have those features and they will also get better in future updates. It's always handy to have WHEN you need it and when you want to use them.
12. It's lighter and thinner witch makes it more pocket friendly. Not only that, but the backside of the phone is more flatter witch makes it better to use on a flat surface.
13. The camera on the Galaxy S4 are WAY WAY better than the HTC One in light situations. Here are some pictures i have been taking with my Samsung Galaxy S4. Remember that those pictures under are BIG.
Here is a picture of the same flower with HDR effect on.
As you can see, the true power of the Galaxy S4's camera makes the HTC One's camera to looks horrible in light situations.
14. The sound quality when you are recording videos are also better than the HTC One's sound quality. The proof is here:
15. The HTC One wasn't available when i had to buy a new phone. So since the Galaxy S4 was available when i needed a new phone, then i bought the Galaxy S4.
So there you have it. This is 15 of my reasons why i bought the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One.
Here is a little help, if you can't decide whether to take the one or s4:

Nexus 5 or G2 if they are priced the same?

I can get a 16gb nexus 5 and LG G2 base model for around the same price (give or take 20 dollars) Which one would you choose? My concern about the nexus 5 is its battery life, which the G2 is great at.
Thanks for the input!

Between the two at this exact moment, I'd take the LG G2 personally because battery life is quite important to me in a portable device of most any kind. Reviews show it has fantastic battery life (meaning the G2) and I doubt seriously - considering the size of the battery in the Nexus 5 - that the Nexus 5 will get anywhere near what the G2 is proving quite capable of.
So, for me the LG G2 would be a no-brainer since we know KitKat will be showing up quite soon since the source is available - we just had a 4.4 build created by houstonn for the LGOG which I happen to have, it's mostly functional but I'm sure soon enough it will be 100% to go.

Agreed. If battery is your main concern and the price is similar, I would choose the G2. Battery isn't that important to me though. All I really need from a phone is a full average day on a single charge and I think I will get that from the N5. I get a full day with my N4 on most days, but I run it conservatively.
I have a G2 now, and I get 2-3 days with the G2 and I get 1-2 days with the Note 3.

Another possible benefit to the G2 is that has Audience's Earsmart noise cancellation chip. It remains to be seen if the Nexus 5 will have it, but since it would impose extra licensing fees, I'm guessing it's more likely than not that the Nexus 5 won't have it (Google has to cut corners somewhere, to sell the Nexus 5 for a low price).
Audience's noise cancellation chip is by far the best noise cancellation out there. Much better than Qualcomm's native solution Fluence (which the Nexus 4 uses). The Nexus One had the Audience chip and was one of the first phones to use it. I really miss that. I could be in super loud environments and people thought I was at home. The Nexus 4 has been a huge step down in this respect. After the Nexus One, the iPhone 4 used the Audience chip (and of course everyone acted like Apple invented noise cancellation, even though they were late comers to the game). In any case, it got much praise on the iPhone 4. But it has been dropped from the iPhone 5 for Apple's own in house solution and the (very few) critics how pay attention to this have pointed out that it's much worse. These days for the most part it's only Samsung that consistently uses the Audience chip in its top tier phones.
Anyway, I care a lot about call quality, so I'd really like the have the Audience chip again. I'm still waiting to see if it's in the Nexus 5. But if I had to decide now, without knowing, that would definitely be a feature pulling me toward the G2 instead.
I would take the G2 because of the battery life and camera performance ... and I'm saying this while I bought the nexus 5
im lucky that the price is so different!
it would be horribly tough to work it out.
g2 is clearly the better phone. better accu, bigger screen, better camera.
but hell man...nexus5 will have 18 month of Top noth Updates PLUS the Community will blow minds becwuse it will be THE device they All have and develope for. with the g2 you wont have that.
i keep telling people that Not the Hardware is the big Star of the cellphone but the Software is.
So choice is as the Situation is thaaaaat easy for me.
I had both and I'd recommend the Nexus 5 any second. KitKat runs super smooth and I love the looks! I hate the glossy plastic on the G2 and I totally love the soft silky back of the N5. I have been touching it nonstop for the last hour. I might need professional help.

+1 in a couple weeks, there'll be some announcement where this cpu is better than etc etc. Hardware gets better all the time but software more or less stays the same and that's what we as users can compete on. Not on the hardware because something will be better in a matter of weeks / months etc.
If having a good community in terms of rom and kernels as well as receiving the newest and latest android on a stock android experience matters to you then a nexus phone is a no Brainer.

but accumulator is Not wrong either in english i guess....but yeah native english speakers Do say battery All the time.
/edit: but it seems BATTERY seems ok from One can read from others. but be careful with that Information! people are still hyped to the Max with the new device the may get too euphoric about it.
Hard decision but honestly I got burned hard by the Optimus 2X and anyone else who owned that phone would likely agree with me, it was a solid phone but the software support was horrendous (not helped by Nvidia...). The only reason I got the Nexus 4 was the fact it was made by LG which make QUALITY hardware but lack a large software dev team so as the Nexus is done by Google it was a very easy decision . I wouldnt leave the Nexus series so long as it stays at the price point of £300 as the developer community alone is amazing, so many talented developers working on one device we would never get left in the dark.
The G2 is a better device interms of battery life but for me the device size definitely goes past the perfect spot which is the N4 and N5 (width is important!). Would I have paid extra if the N5 had a stepped battery in it, of course I would as I do want longer battery life but I think the N5 will meet my requirement now as its better than the N4! I think the decider for me if they were the same price would be the developer community as I would go for the one with the biggest following, if the G2 can keep up with the N5 in terms of custom rom android versions then it would be fine and I would be tempted but still would need to hold it in the hand as I think its too wide.
Tough call! Would wait till Jan before deciding on the community personally.
I would get Nexus 5. I don't use my phone 8 hours a day and I don't live in the woods so I have access to the charger most of the time.

possibly because of Qualcomm being the cpu we may get Lucky to get One Last Update after that 18 month.

Google did say the reason that the Gnex will no longer get updates... Im not a fortune teller but I think Qualcomm will survive more than 18 months.

What reasons, this is all I see so far: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/3468085?hl=en
And if its because TI is no longer making the chips, that's not convincing, while I'm no developer, TI OMAP chips are much more open than Qualcomm (which is why they are found in a lot of other opensource linux devices) so even if Google receives no help from TI it should still be easier to release KitKat for it than with a Qualcomm device having to deal with more proprietary codes (one of the reason a Nexus 7 factory image was temporary pulled).
Anyway, what ever the reason its unfounded and here is why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development
Exactly - the reason for the lack of a 4.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus is because TI basically pulled out of ARM chip making and they won't provide support to Google so Google has no choice but to pull out of any potential updates for that particular device.
In time I'm sure you'll see a 4.4+ ROM appear soon enough for the Galaxy Nexus. Hell, if old devices like the Galaxy S can run 4.3 (and it does, surprisingly well, probably will run 4.4 too without a problem) you can be positive that 4.4 will make it's way to the Galaxy Nexus soon enough.
But it's not Google that pulled the plug for that update, it was Texas Instruments...

Nexus 5 or Galaxy S3?????

Which one should I get? My friend is recommending me Samsung S3 because of brand & cheaper. But Nexus 5 has superior specs and faster & latest android. Please help me decide
First, it would prolly be best to go post in one of the device comparison threads in the General section of the forum. Too many of these threads get made and some don't end well lol
Secondly. Since u already posted. Coming from someone who has used both. Nexus 5 all the way. But that's my opinion and it depends on ur preference ur guess. I feel the nexus 5 is a significant boost in performance, and quality over the S III.
If you want something closer to a touchwiz experience but want an alternative to Samsung. The LG G2 Has the same specs as the Nexus 5 and a UI similar to TouchWiz. As I said tho. Its a matter of personal preference and this is just my opinion. In the end I would research and try em out if you know anyone who has em and go from there ....
and post in the other section I mentioned earlier. Its a sticky in the general section.

ive come from a S3 to a Nexus 5 , I think il be going back to a S3 , the S3 is a quality phone, its built better, SD slot, different batteries, better quality screen.
Yes the Nexus is fast, do we really need a fast phone, the screen on the N5 is nice and crisp, but 1080p on a 5 inch device? come on.
The S3 on jelly bean was laggy, im hoping it will run better on kit kat in Feb.

I would go for the nexus. I had the S3 when it first came out but after a day with it i returned it to T-Mobile and got the One s. TouchWiz is horrible in my opinion, Sense is the way to go if your not going with stock. And idk if a had a bad phone but my screen had hella lot of those big black dots when the screen was all black. But if u want save money go with the S3.

Haha QFT !
Seriously, that's like saying do we really need more bullets in our guns. The answer is yes. I rather have the speed and not need it then not have it and need it. Apps/Games on the mobile market are starting to become pretty demanding. Tho I do think we are at a point right now where we need to focus more on battery research and overall reception. It seems like the older "Feature" phones get better service then a lot of the smart phones. My friends old LG Envy 3 gets service at her place but my Nexus 5 doesn't. Nor did my Note 3 or S4 when I was still on Verizon.....
Which that lil tid bit, is another point for the nexus 5. Around WA state, Verizon is hands down the best and most reliable service, but I gave that up just so I could get a nexus 5 lol (also cause Verizon are the Nazis of the cellphone world and android is being suffocated on their service. T-Mobile may not be as good but at least they let android do its thing)
EDIT - that was kind of a weird analogy but I was in the military and its the only thing I could think of. Its better then the guitar one I had tho haha

Grandfather speak sense unless you game on it or benchmark, there is no point.
I have a high end pc 4.7ghz , sli gtx 670 etc, loads of ram, i see a point in that, for video encoding, editing etc.
The N5 does feel cheap, it is cheap, the money has gone on the cpu , screen, graphics , the S3 and N4 feel better made to me.
What i want is a phone like the S1 was build quality wise and thickness, with modern screen and decent battery life.
Also the camera on the N5 is poor, it can take a good shot, but quick it isn't.
I am a nexus 4 user. Shifted from galaxy S3. I still miss my GS3.. Because of Amoled screen and battery backup and camera. These things sucks on Nexus 4. Same applies to N5 also. So if you are not a crack flasher then go for S3.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
N5 all the way. I switched from an S3 to a Nexus 5 and the only things I miss are the slightly louder speaker and louder earphone volume (that's stock of course. Using fauxsound fixes the earphone volume at least). The Nexus feels so much better to hold since it doesn't feel like it'll slip out of your hand and the battery lasts longer. With my S3 running cm10.2 and a 4200mah extended battery, I would get about 6 hours screen on time. I get about the same with the 2300mah battery in the Nexus and I don't have to carry a brick in my pocket. Screen is also much better. I can actually see what's on it outdoors.
If speed is your only requirement along with fast updates, go the Nexus 5.
If you need a good phone, camera, media player and mp3 player, go the gs3.
Nexus 5 is the one to Get you get the latest OS version when released cross ship defective replacements if ordered from the play store if needed. I had a Samsung S3 last year it was a nice phone but to wait a year for software updates if they decide to release it.
And at the price point for a fully unlocked phone it can not be beat, if you buy out right its an average $100 more then the Nexus 5 from the Play store for a locked phone add the $50 the carriers usually charge to unlock it so now you ar $150 more for. A year old tech phone.
Take the $150 you saved put it aside then next year you can upgrade to the nexus 6 or what ever it's called for only $200 more then you would spend on the S3 now.
And you could sell the nexus 5 next year and repeat the following year and you will be upgrading every year for next to nothing price wise,

Because the orignal poster of the thread said N5 or S3 you muppet.
I replied on here as i came from a S3 to a N5 , and i think the S3 is better built, better camera, better screen although lower res.
I went from an S3 to a Nexus 4, and found the N4 much nicer, the N5 is a considerable further improvement over the N4. Those people saying the S3 has a better screen, I guess is just a preference for the amoled screen types, personally I find the terrible oversaturation to be really annoying, but its just a preference thing I guess.
Anyway, another vote here for the N5 over the S3, by a long way.

Explain the reasons for buying this phone

Serious, explain your motivations for deciding to purchase the Note 5. Currently, i have the Tmobile note 4. i want to buy a note 5 but no removable battery, no SD card slot, no Samsung pay if you are rooted, who here is not gonna root their phone? to me this is just an iphone with a better everything, tell me how you think. am i the only one who thinks this is the one of the worse Samsung phone releases?

Your opinion of it being "worse" is subjective, more in favor of it being not true for most users. This is not like a better iPhone, rather an iPhone is trying to be like it. Don't forget who created / invented the phablet category. It's Samsung, not Apple.
Regardless, the Note 5 is from a hardware stand point an upgrade. That's not a perception nor is it minor. You can't argue the CPU. The SnapDragon 805 in the Note 4 isn't a slouch, but it is at the same time no where in the same league as the Exynos Octa Core. Not even in the same conversation. 1GB of extra RAM may not seem like much, but it's still an upgrade. The Note 3 had 3GB and guess what so does the Note 4. Overall build quality is undeniably better. The Note 5 has better hardware period. = It's an upgrade.
There is no need to justify anything hardware wise by choosing to think that they're minor upgrades when they are not. The Exynos Octa Core CPU alone is worthy of praise to call the Note 5 an upgrade just from that alone. Even if it only came with 3GB and same "everything" else. The issue here is obviously the software and for most on here the inability to remove the battery or having a SD card slot is the culprit. Not the core hardware.
The price tag is also subjective, because for some ~$1000 or not, it's not an issue. Most people pay monthly with a JUMP upgrade from TM, not all up front. Zero down. Zero Interest.
What kills the Note 5 for me is purely the software as LP is becoming more and more locked down with each version.
Storage Solution?
128GB would be plenty + Unlimited Cloud. Airplane? Boonies? Micro USB to USB 3.0 OTG cable for about $1.50 with my 256GB Flash stick. I can't justify the idea of not being able to fit all the movies that I could possibly watch on the 128GB for my usual 5.5-6 hour flight? Even if you were flying from L.A. to London, you'd be able to watch only 6-8 movies and I don't think 128GB (less what the system eats up) is too small for that. That goes for music too....ACC, FLAC or not....if it can go on a microSD it can fit on a regular USB. 3.0 Flash Stick. The point is I think we're making it out to be a bigger issue than it really is. Plugging in an OTG adapter is much faster and easier than taking a case off (for those with cases), popping off the cover, and replacing a microSD. For the nit pickers, yes, wear and tear too. (Which I don't even think about....)
Battery?
My 12,000mAh portable battery bank. Although it's 3000mAh, you also have to factor in efficiency. Bigger is not always better. But then again, this all depends on the software.... The whole time I've had my Note 4, I've never had to swap batteries...it's not really an issue, especially if the software allows for it to be more efficient.
Software?
You're SOL. Sorry. You can thank google for that one. The builds are getting worse and worse.

great points, i am not saying that the note 4 is better than the note 5. in my opinion i think the note 4 is better for me, ill wait until i test the note 5 maybe i will change my mind, but to be honest right now from what i seen of the note 5 will not work for me. the battery life is a big problem with my note 4, most people will just look at the smaller battery and say the battery life is worse than the note 4, but thats false because of the new CPU.

Indeed. The Note 5 feels very premium and it is noticeably lighter in the hands. I personally like the ergonomics of it much better with the curved glass back. Some of the things that I've noticed right away from an outside perspective is that the speaker is much better too. It has much more integrity than the Note 4 and seems to be able to handle higher volumes without sounding tinny or metallic.
The screen, although the same resolution as our Note 4, is much crisper and brighter. It has more of a cool tone (kelvin temp) whereas our Note 4 is a lot warmer and is more yellowish. I prefer the Note 5 screen for sure.
We'll have to wait and see for how well the battery holds up! But then again...it's all in the software so LP just might ruin it for what it could due with a much better custom ROM.
Tried to order the 64gb version but T-Mobile somehow screwed up my account. The only thing I could jump to are some cheesy tablets! Hope they fix this soon!
Here are some pics that I've taken with my Note 4 of the Note 5. Notice how strongly they are pushing the hardware LOL.....which is undeniably better, but lets just hope Lollipop doesn't screw it up.

I thought that I was the only one with that problem. I click upgrade device I get taken to page with tablets, wifi hotspots and the
Gear S (which I already have ironically). Sometimes the upgrade option takes me to a page with phones but if I try to add one the page errors out with "our systems are currently unavailable please try again".

nice, lets hope Android M is better. i dont really know much about but seems like that lollipop was all for looks
I agree. M is our only hope. If Google doesn't get their act together, a lot of the phone companies might go elsewhere. Samsung's own OS (Tizen) looks promising. Open source too.

i cant really use anything but touchwiz because i bought the Gear 2
P.S. not a very good idea. its an amazing watch but i cant use it with CM witch is way better than touchwiz.
P.P.S my S4 has better battery life with the more usage and screen on time. my note 4 doesnt even last till 1 pm, i go to work at 7 am. thats really sad, but you know note 4 has a bigger screen and other stuff that will use more battery but it also has a bigger battery so there is not excuse.

Tizen is open source? huh i didnt know that, that makes it 10x better in my eyes. i will have to do more research on M but google is very secretive of everything they do
I get 5 hours of screen time on average with my Note 4. It's your software buddy. You should look into the ROM I'm using. PM me if you need help. (See my signature for some info.)
But I hear ya. ..I personally like TW and it works as well if not better than CM with the ROM I'm on.

i'll happily try it because with the battery life im getting right now (like 2-3 hours screen on time) i dont mind going back to kitkat for better battery life.
im having problems with random reboots and bootloops for awhile, even though it worked perfectly fine
i think its the battery, im gonna order a battery from amazon and see ill just use my S4 for now
I have been playing with android M, even though smoother, it is nothing to do jumping jacks for...Android Marshmellow is what Lollipop should have been and should have been the final milestone for lollipop. Lollipop 5.2 maybe?
You will sadly...be disappointed if you are hoping for a big kapow to blow lollipop out of the water.

Dude my coworkers are mad at me because they had to deal with my disappointment lol. Glad to know it wasn't just me.....hang in there I talked to like 3 T-Mobile supervisors and they are working on it. One asked how can we make you a happy T-Mobile customer? My reply, "give it to me free"! Hahahaha!

Yup. There is a very bright future for Tizen. We shall see soon as it might show up as early as next year in selected devices.
I bought it because I'm attracted to shiny objects. I'm pretty happy with my year-old LG G3, but when I saw the Note 5 in the store, the display simply dazzled me! Also wanted a phone with a great fingerprint sensor, because I'm sick of my phone waking up in my pocket and doing sh!t by itself, but I hate having to do some kind of unlock dance.
I'm a bit irked by not being able to replace the battery, but honestly haven't had to use a second battery since my Galaxy Nexus, several phones ago.
I'm getting it because it feels so much better in the hand than the Note 4, and the performance improvements in hardware are nothing to ignore. I've never really cared all that much about a replaceable battery. The MicroSD situation does irk me a bit, but you have to adapt to the times. I think someday there will be no phones with the slot, and I think I'm OK with that. Between the available storage on board (I'm getting 64GB) and the cloud, it's not really as much of an issue as it used to be.
Also, as I age, I find I'm caring less about root. I do less and less with it every year, and now that I don't even really use TiBu anymore, there's really no point. I just want a fast phone that works with my apps. Note5 fits the bill, and it's sexier than my Note4.
Simple Answers ......... I have had Every Samsung Galaxy and Note devices. The Note 4 is a very nice device.
The Note 5 is 20% faster CPU
Better Software
Better Battery life
Better Camera, Same as the S6 .... The S6 Camera is the 1st decent performing camera on a Samsung devices. So, Those are the Plus's
....... I do not use Pay on my phone so I really do not care about that
The "no sd card" is a bit of a drag but I have a external Memory mini flash that I can use so not such an issue
The Closed battery........ Yeah that bothers me more, but the worst is the glass back.......... looks awesome but is way more vulnerable to breaking, that concerns me
Should have released with 64 gig standard and 128 option, then it would be more palatable...... definitely worth getting
But, either way, Getting mine tomorrow night..........
Im a hard user of phablet, been since note 3, now using note 4. To be honest, all the "issues" pointed here are not such a big deal, a friend of mine, who's Apple hard core user, says that Samsung at last are doing what Apple been doing for years, having one memory internally will make the data transfer faster instead of trying to find it on both, internal and external, it will make the phone faster and finally the OS will work with no lag.
Design on note 5 is beautiful, very premium, internal hardware is a big plus with octacore and 4gb of ram, awesome camera, better software.
Since I have been using smart phones, I have never ever replaced the battery, never care, didn't actually thought about it, I have always had the access to charge it and carry my charges wherever I go, now, the note 5 with fast wireless charger, is a big plus, I was in new york a week ago and I saw in all the Starbucks the wireless charger on the tables, I hope they can have it all over the place, Im pretty sure soon all Starbucks will have it.
Honestly, external memory and battery are not big issues for me, I record bunch of videos and I use the phone for tethering, games, videos more than a regular person and note 5 will be a great upgrade. I have a 32gb note 4 and 16gb external, my internal memory is not even half full, external have a couple of movies.
By the way, sorry for english!
