[Q] Faulty Screen? (large images)

Can anyone with a Nexus S have a look at these photos and compare against their own? I want to be sure my screen is faulty before taking it back. Thanks.

Nice sharp clear text on the i9000:
The same text on the Nexus S:
Looking from an angle, the screen turns even more green/yellow:
Then with brightness turned up full on both:
Now looking from an angle the screen has a very blue tint on the NS, where the i9000 doesn't discolour at all:
The screen starts to look much better after about 50% brightness. Auto-brightness makes it look awful which makes me think the colour profile for the panel is wrong as if the brightness is set to full it's overly bright and has a blue tint.
Does anyone else see this behaviour?

I do have a vibrant so I can compare in the same way... but again there's also differences among Vibrant panels. Anyway, my Vibrant is a bit more blue tinted than my Nexus S, and overall the Nexus S display seems nicer. However, as for viewing angle, the Vibrant doesn't distort at all, while the Nexus S changes color slightly, which I think is due to the gorilla glass in the Vibrant and lack of it in the Nexus S.
Your first pictures... I don't know if it's because of your camera's white balance, but the Nexus S is way too green. If anything, the Nexus S should be warmer (redder/yellower) than the Vibrant, which is what I see and was also reported by many reviewers. Also it should have exactly the same sharpness, so I think your display is kind of messed up... exchange if you can.

It's faulty. I have 3 Vibrant's in my hands right now due to my internal speaker stop working and getting warranty replacements. The warrant replacements both have blue tinted screen, so I asked for yet another. The original Vibrant I had has no blue tint and is gorgeous, but the Nexus S is even more vibrant and gorgeous.

Yeah, your nexus S needs to be exchanged.
My S Screen looks even better than your i9000 phone. The colors on the i9000 look a little washed out, or not as vibrant. Of course that could just be the camera your using

For the amount of phones they put out in what seemed like a rush, I think they did a decent job.

to be honest i am kinda tired of going on repeat about this. but there are many bad screens. check my post history. you will find your aswers.
what i can say is there is warm yellow white " defective screen " and cool blue white " good screen "

Ok I'd say your screen is defective. Funny I placed my nexus one next to the S at the store, and the store unit had exact same issue as yours. My nexus one whites blew it away, it wasn't even close it was that bad. It's screen had some weird tint color like yours. Must have been a bad unit as well.

My Nexus S has same bluish display when screen brightness is low, exactly same with the pictures in the first post.
When I dim the screen in Clock Application, I can see the purple buttons instead of gray.
When I compare with HD2's LCD screen, HD2 looks even better :S
Should I exchange it? My friend bought it from Bestbuy for me, and I'm not living in US. So it's really hard for me to exchange it :/

So here's my conclusion. G2x has most natural colors, the OLED on the Nexus just seems artificially vivid, but really there's not much difference until you hit the blacks. G2x has same LCD bleed as EVO, but 1000x better colors. So there you go, if you're used to OLED I can see why you're disappointed, but if you've been on an EVO LCD, the G2x is quite a treat. You can go wrong with any of these phones.

I've just seen reviews on the screen all over the place so I thought this would be more objective. That and lots of LCD bleed complaints. I love it personally.

I actually thought the screen was pretty nice....not as rich as the super amoled screens but definitely way better than The other LCD screens out there like the ones on evo

Personally I think the G2X looks better in all cases. Sure there is some bleed on the complete black, but to be honest, I am probably not the only one that uses their phone in normal lighting, every issue I have seen posted regarding bleed problems are in a pitch black room. Hardly a situation that I would even come close to on a daily basis.
I think the G2X is great as is across the board. And I am coming from a Fascinate (Galaxy S phone).

in the pics the 2 screens look on while the third is black. i dotn see it like that maybe its just the way the camera pics up the bleed. But i think this is back to the old plama lcd arguments. my blacks on lcd and phone are black enough for me maybe i have my mind convinced they are black

Well you're right, OLED is off when it's displaying black, that's why it has a massive contrast ratio. The camera isn't lying in those pics.

I have used both the NS and the G2X and I prefer the G2X over the NS. I sold my used NS the day I bought the new G2X and I am not looking back.
I haven't had any of the balcklight bleeding issues everyone is talking about and the speed of the phone is superior to that of the NS. The phone feels more solid in my hand then the NS did, the build quality to me is allot better then the plastic NS.
I haven't rooted mine yet, I will wait until a stable release of CM7 comes out and then I will take the plunge. I think once a nice stable ROM is released and the recovery flashing issue are resolved, allot of folks will make the switch.

Do you know what I take away from this? Seeing that 3 different high profile Android devices, all have the same 4 buttons, but they're all in a different order. Why can't someone say 'lets standardize on a single order for these buttons'?

The sad thing is the NS doesn't even have the same layout as the Vibrant...same company!

Samsung was so kind and sent me an Infuse 4G to help me developing for it. Thanks Samsung Mobile Korea
Infuse use a beautiful huge 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus screen.. But its driven with Galaxy S screen settings
DROID Charge is very similar to the Infuse 4G, except the display is a tad smaller. Super AMOLED Plus screen is also optimized for non "Plus" aka Pentile matrix.
That's why by default everything is over-sharpened and colors over-saturated.
I added preliminary support today for much more faithful screen settings in my one of my in-dev apps "Voodoo Screen Tuning", available for free on Android Market.
This app is very much experimental and not a final product. See it as an internal leak from a R&D lab. But as Linus tells: publish often, publish early

Installed, I see there are two options, native and samsung. I assume native is to return to stock and samsung are to switch to the optimized settings? I got superuser request and approved after hitting the samsung button. Didn't notice anything immediately so I rebooted to see if that would make a difference.
Don't know or can't tell if there is a difference.
Any way to tell? Good news is it didn't crash on the charge.

Native is screen without sharpening or color boosting.
Samsung is.. Samsung default.
I don't own a Charge for tests so.. only you can tell me

I installed and swapped between the two. I couldn't tell any difference.
I am on a voodoo kernel so I wonder if that makes a difference...

The Native setting is *much* sharper than the Samsung setting.
Very nice.

I don't see any immediate changes in the look of the screen, nothing changes (or it's so slight as to be unnoticable, and I do have pretty good vision) when looking at a high res picture with the overlay on and cycling back and forth.
But it is doing something, the button backlighting turns off and turns back on, but only when pressing the native button. Or maybe I'm seeing things from staring at my phone for the last 10 minutes like a jeweler setting a diamond or something.
Edit: It is sharper on native, very small text is more defined. Cool.

Same here. Not really sure which I prefer, native looks a lot sharper but samsung looks a lot smoother due to the blurring effect.

Samsung setting is over-sharpened, which means it should "look" sharper, but all it does for real is exhibiting a ton of artifacts.
I guess it's why you find "native" sharper, because it just display accurately pixels as they're supposed to be
− apply sharpening general UI elements and text really makes no sense to me, so it's not the case anymore.
Also: note that if your eyes are accustomed to an artificially sharpened image, the normal one looks blurry for a few seconds in comparison.
But that's just an optical illusion.

Does the setting stick across reboots, or does it have to be reset every time?

Prior to tweaking the settings, I changed my wallpaper to one I had on my Droid X, but was forced to change from because of how bad the colors looked on the Charge. It's took a few swaps back and forth, but I was quickly able to see the difference.

If anything, native appears oversharpened. I can even see a bit of a grid on my solid green background. Text under native, to me, is reminiscent of my old fascinate which obviously had a pentile matrix but that might just be the roboto font I'm using.
Edit: okay I take back that bit about it looking oversharpened. Just took a little getting used to when looking at text but DAMN there is quite a noticeable improvement in picture clarity. Thanks a lot.

Just put the screen in overlay and swapped between the options. The OP is correct, the difference hurts your eyes for just a few seconds, but once you go to "Native" you will never go back to "Samsung." The change is VERY noticeable on your home screen app icons.
Native:
Edges are sharper and lines are cleaner. Text appears slightly crisper and loses the perimeter fuzz that I thought was light bleeding before.
Samsung:
The text is a little "better on the eyes" but at the same time it isn't as clear as in the other mode. Lines and text have a very very slight bleed to them.
As a side note, No color changes are experienced. This goes along with the OP's previous comment. The change is simply making the pixels on the screen display more accurately not making the colors display differently.
That's my review. I also noticed that I wanted to keep my phone at a a higher brightness to really enjoy the screen experience.

Correct. I did not mean to indicate that the color gamut was changed, but my old wallpaper definitely looks better.

Native “looks" better on high Res photos.
Samsung makes text almost looked bold.
Proof: try the overlay option and open xda on your phone/Google and find a high Res picture, then just switch back and forth. You'll be able to tell the difference easily.

While it's not an insane difference the Native settings are visibly sharper. Thanks for your hard work on everything Voodoo, Supercurio. Especially Voodoo Sound, with some good Sennheiser headphones + .flac format music and your voodoo sound my music sounds absolutely incredible. Well worth the $4 :]

Different Screens in newer models?

So I RMA'd and Google sent me a new Nexus 5 from the new "311k" batch. My original Nexus 5 is a "launch" version of the "310k" batch...
I turn my phone on and I immediately see a yellow/brownish tint to the new one they sent me (311k). Now, is this something that's permanent or will it get better with more use of the phone? My original Nexus 5 has bright whites with no beige tint to them...
I took some pics with an S3, the differences in pictures seem minor...in person it's literally night and day. Especially when using an app like hangouts...I'm sure if I had a better camera it'd pick it up.

I am not. I searched google and it seems to be an issue some people are having...but like I said it's odd to me because it's such a drastic difference and you can notice it everywhere on the phone.
You can't even say the whites are "white"

That's really interesting. There is a way to find it what type of screen out has with a terminal command. It's in a screen thread here somewhere. It would be good to know exactly what screens both the phones have. I noticed when I got my phone it had a brownish, reddish tint and flashing a custom kernel gave me amazing colors.

I know kernels can change the colors but why would it be different if it were a software issue? I know the 311k didn't have to download an update as the 310k's did when you turn on the phone.

My 310 straight from Google, out the box did not update anything. I think I got the second batch since I received it November 15.

Well its only there to protect the screen during transit. Have you compared them without it on? It is possible it causes a slight tint to the screen?

As much as I know, yellow tint is normal with new screens. It goes away after some days of usage.

Firstly 311 just indicates 2013 month 11 (November) production date and 310 was month 10 - its not a build standard despite what many seem to be thinking. If something in production changes one day then you'll need the whole serial number to know if it's before or after a change.
My first was November production (311) and it came pre-loaded with Kit Kat - but it had a serious screen defect (colour banding and distortions) and was replaced by another November (311). I would say the second does have warmer whites but as it all works as designed I'm happy.

Same thing happened to me on my replacement. The first one seemed super white (along with some dead pixels) and the new one has a warmer (yellower) tone to it. At first I thought the same thing, is this a defect. And then I thought either way I like a warmer tone on a screen. The brighter one almost hurt my eyes actually.. Since I've been using the new screen for a while I think it may have brightened up some, but I don't have my defective N5 to compare it to. I guess my point is that I don't think it is defective. I think it is an improvement over the first one. Especially since I don't have any dead pixels and my vibrator motor is stronger too.

Just got mine 3 days ago and has the warmer looking screen. I do prefer the cooler screens like my N4 had but will live with it since there are no dead pixels or other issues people have reported.

Wanted to update this thread...
So I got a replacement for the 2nd phone which had a yellow hue...but then when I got the 3rd phone and compared the screens, the yellow hue on the 2nd phone had gone away and the 3rd had the yellow hue.
So in my conclusion, it takes a few days - a week for the screen to break in.

Howdy folks, it seems the new Moto Edge 5G is exhibiting the same issues as seen on the Moto Edge+ since they share the same screen hardware. These issues are popping up usually within a few days of ownership and are starting to flood the moto support forums. Since we're an amazing group of members here at XDA, I figured I'd try to nail down some common ground and create a thread to discuss.
If your screen is exhibiting one of the following issues, please reply to the thread with the symptoms, the manufacturer birth-date (on bottom of phone's box), and a photo if possible. Please also share how long the phone was used before symptoms appeared, and whether it had been after a prolonged use period like all day gaming, or just poof it happened.

My Moto Edge 5G is exhibiting the purple splotches around the edges of the screen as well as the green tint.

Appeared after 4th day of ownership, after long day of sporadic use.

I have a green haze right around the edges and I can't tell if that is apart of an edged screen. Will continue to monitor it.

If it's like the Edge plus and they basically share the same screen I doubt it will get better and will likely need a replacement phone. They did push a software update to the Edge plus that supposedly helped some phones if it hadn't started yet or was very early in the process.

As a person who is in the market for a new device due to a failing battery in my HTC 10, what would the general consensus be on buying and Edge right now? If it matters, I'd buy from the big yellow tag place since they have it in stock and are close. And then if the device has to be returned as well...

At the $500 price point it was a great deal, at its current $700 price point... I'd go elsewhere. Especially with the widespread screen problems, just look at the reviews on the yellow tag store.

*sigh* this is a case where you want something to work out so bad, you try to find excuses to ignore facts. and the $700+ price tag.

*sigh* this is a case where you want something to work out so bad, you try to find excuses to ignore facts. and the $700+ price tag.

There's no proof the new one won't start it in a few days. if you want to spin the wheel of chance, go for it. But at $700 I think there's better options out there. OnePlus Nord, Pixel 4a 5G.

Haven't experienced any screen problems, I purchased my device unlocked for $349.99, which is amazing for a 5G device

I will add my $0.02 to this and say I believe it is an LED issue. LEDs might not be getting the right voltage at low levels. Try with an all-white photo. lower your brightness. I bet you could not tell. Try with any other color and you will probably not tell. It is most notable with a super dark grey picture. The kind of dark grey that has a hint of green in it already. Turn the brightness all the way down, then up to about 15-20 percent. You should be able to see it then. I think it is an LED voltage control issue. Software update that was mentioned by one of you up above would make sense to me. Maybe I might just be imagining things or mine is just different than every one elses. The way mine started was at the top of the screen showed it lightly, then it got a bit worse. It has stayed since then. I bought this on the 2nd of August, received it on the 4th. Screen started on the 10th. Today the 16th has not had a change since I believe the 13th, if I remember correctly. It is rooted with Magisk and EdXposed. I might make a return/repair request tomorrow.

So I'm at 4 days with my replacement Edge and it's working correctly so far.

you really scare me with your screen problems. For the moment (5 days) I have no problem with my Edge (purchase in France) but what scares me is that it does not happen immediately and I do not have a purchase invoice (gift) .... I hope I have no problem soon: /

I have a very Little problema when I'm on dark grey screen with 2 or 3 % of brightness in 90hz mode... if I try to use 60hz mode the display is absolutely perfect..

Ok i have green tint...only at low brightness i have it...i'm si dissapointed....

They can fix it by letting us adjust screen hues , like how Samsung has , so we can calibrate it

Yep, just noticed it today. Took awhile (bout 3weeks). I've been in dark mode, and my wallpaper's of blackness, didn't notice. It's severely getting worse, quickly. Did anyone notice, after the September update? Time to contact best buy.

Mine started out pretty minor, but has been getting progressively worse over the last few weeks. Initially seemed heat related as I only noticed it while using Google Maps in navigation mode. IT would start out as slight dark ghosting of the screen image on the right side of the screen and would progressively creep to the left side. Mostly it's a darkening of the correct image by ghost image of higher up, in particular it's seen as a dark circle where the front camera is. If the part of the image being ghosted is a strong color it will be ghosted in green or purple. As the screen is scrolled the ghosted images move as well. It's since gotten to the point normal usages more then 10-15 mins cause the issue. If I use the camera too long in the heat or sun then the lower part of the screen will go white and the touch digitizer stops working. Attached is a photo taken while the screen was 2/3s white with my company iPhone.
The warranty replacement arrives tomorrow. I just ran the most recent update QPD30.114-23-2 installed claiming fixes for screen issues, but still saw the ghosting after the reboot.
