Different Screens in newer models? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I RMA'd and Google sent me a new Nexus 5 from the new "311k" batch. My original Nexus 5 is a "launch" version of the "310k" batch...
I turn my phone on and I immediately see a yellow/brownish tint to the new one they sent me (311k). Now, is this something that's permanent or will it get better with more use of the phone? My original Nexus 5 has bright whites with no beige tint to them...
I took some pics with an S3, the differences in pictures seem minor...in person it's literally night and day. Especially when using an app like hangouts...I'm sure if I had a better camera it'd pick it up.
Both taken at full brightness

I am not. I searched google and it seems to be an issue some people are having...but like I said it's odd to me because it's such a drastic difference and you can notice it everywhere on the phone.
You can't even say the whites are "white"

That's really interesting. There is a way to find it what type of screen out has with a terminal command. It's in a screen thread here somewhere. It would be good to know exactly what screens both the phones have. I noticed when I got my phone it had a brownish, reddish tint and flashing a custom kernel gave me amazing colors.

I know kernels can change the colors but why would it be different if it were a software issue? I know the 311k didn't have to download an update as the 310k's did when you turn on the phone.

My 310 straight from Google, out the box did not update anything. I think I got the second batch since I received it November 15.

Just wondering why you didn't use the same screen shot on both? Not trying to say anything, just struck me as odd.

You do know that the Nexus 5 wording is the screen protector when you get them brand new..

Well its only there to protect the screen during transit. Have you compared them without it on? It is possible it causes a slight tint to the screen?

As much as I know, yellow tint is normal with new screens. It goes away after some days of usage.

Firstly 311 just indicates 2013 month 11 (November) production date and 310 was month 10 - its not a build standard despite what many seem to be thinking. If something in production changes one day then you'll need the whole serial number to know if it's before or after a change.
My first was November production (311) and it came pre-loaded with Kit Kat - but it had a serious screen defect (colour banding and distortions) and was replaced by another November (311). I would say the second does have warmer whites but as it all works as designed I'm happy.

Same thing happened to me on my replacement. The first one seemed super white (along with some dead pixels) and the new one has a warmer (yellower) tone to it. At first I thought the same thing, is this a defect. And then I thought either way I like a warmer tone on a screen. The brighter one almost hurt my eyes actually.. Since I've been using the new screen for a while I think it may have brightened up some, but I don't have my defective N5 to compare it to. I guess my point is that I don't think it is defective. I think it is an improvement over the first one. Especially since I don't have any dead pixels and my vibrator motor is stronger too.

Just got mine 3 days ago and has the warmer looking screen. I do prefer the cooler screens like my N4 had but will live with it since there are no dead pixels or other issues people have reported.

see this. . it is n4.. i had three n4 and 2 had yellow tint one was normal white..
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Here...odels-have-slightly-different-screens_id44252

Wanted to update this thread...
So I got a replacement for the 2nd phone which had a yellow hue...but then when I got the 3rd phone and compared the screens, the yellow hue on the 2nd phone had gone away and the 3rd had the yellow hue.
So in my conclusion, it takes a few days - a week for the screen to break in.

Nexus 5 screen has broken

Hi,
Last night while using my nexus, my screen suddenly bled around the corners really bad and now my screen looks washed out and has a yellow tint to it if viewed from an angle!
Anybody else had this problem?

Nope. Its not the digitizer. The digitizer is a clear glass that processes you touches into data that is than put into a map that tells the phone what part of the screen was touched. What you are seeing is either LCD's LCD layer or its backlight. Either way you need a new LCD. The n5 has the digitizer and LCD fuzed to cut down on thickness. So the entire front panel needs to be swapped. 130-150 USD cost. It is however nearly impossible for anything other than a faulty part to cause this. So you should still be able to get it replaces with ease. As for anybody else having this issue. It has plagued LCD screens on phones forever IPS's especially.

I'm in the UK and purchased the phone from an independent retailer, hopefully they will repair it for me, apparently the repair it within the manufacturers warranty.
Only had the phone for 4 months!

*UPDATE*
Just to update, the phone has now developed around 10 dead pixels at random locations on the screen and the colour is all washed out around the edges!
Taking the phone into Phones 4 U after work and they're going to send away to get fixed, hope LG just replace the device.

7-10 days i got told, that's like 7-10 years for me love my nexus.
Went into Phones 4 U and the guy tried to tell me they didn't sell that phone..... well yes you do coz this is where i bought it! haha
Anyway, hopefully it'll be quick and painless.

Some what of a pink tint on screen

I've noticed that on white backgrounds such as Web browsing, there is slight pink tinting going on on the left side of my screen, and the lower bottom of the screen. However it is most apparent when using the keyboard, then the left side of the keyboard has a slight tint of pink and the other looks ok. I can't really use the demo store units a base to go off of, since those screens have burn in already from prolonged use. I did compare my friends note 4 to my screen, and his looked uniform (although a tiny yellow tint across the whole screen, but uniform). I value uniformity since that would not bug me. Anyone else notice this issue?

This has been an issue on every Samsung phone since the S4. Odds are your replacement will also have it to some extent.

Mine first one had sort of a round pink area on the right edge of the screen, and once you saw it you couldn't look away. I had it replaced and the new one is much better.

I think it's pretty close to perfect, but the pink area was really noticeable on the other one. There is nothing that noticeable on the new one's screen.

I'm noticing this on my new note 5 as well just in the bottom half of my screen its very subtle and hard to catch on camera but I can see it the stock Samsung keyboard instead of being a greyish color looks more of a light pinkish color its quite annoying I just got my phone on Thursday I may just drop by T-Mobile and have them replace it with in my grace period.

So what was the end result of your new Note 5 ? Hopefully good
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Well I received my replacement and I'm somewhat neutral about it. The condition is completely flipped now. The right side of my screen has a pink tint to it, except this time it doesn't extend from the side to almost half the screen like my older note did. The pink tint is somewhat more noticeable though, as in darker. Another thing I noticed was that this screen has a more noticeable screen flicker than the older one on max brightness over white backgrounds. I'll post pictures soon for you guys to see a difference. But at this point, I think I'm going to wait it out 15 days to wait on new stock to come then test my luck again.
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Damn, that's terrible I would call tmobile right back and let them know they sent you a defective replacement device. But i t makes sense to wait as well.

how's everyone's screen color uniformity?

I'll never in my life get a perfect phone.. ever. out of every android I've had, none have ever been perfect.
either way, how's everyone's screen uniformity? I just realized that my screen is brighter towards the bottom left and much darker as it goes to the top left. so annoying. only really notice it on gray backgrounds ugh but you can kinda even see it on white too. pretty annoying but i really dont know if it's even worth swapping it out, because i know with my crap luck I'll get another one that's even worse.
so how's yours?

I already had this problem with 3 different S6 so I'm really disappointed the issue is still present with the S7. Got a RMA but it may takes 3 weeks for a replacement thanks to the ****ty consumer service in my country .
Here is a shot of the problem (the 2 shots are the same I have just augmented contrast on the second one to clearly see the problem).
http://imgur.com/a/aThlj
damn, thats definitely worse than mine. the bottom of mine is just brighter and the top is darker, which can be a bit annoying. I notice it if I go landscape and pull down the drop down bar if I'm using a theme that has a darker color.. or if the status bar is colored like hangouts, the left side (top) will be a darker green than the right (bottom) which just looks brighter.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 using Tapatalk
Yup...same on my new S7. Green tint on the bottom, pinkish tint on top. Not as pronounced as on my previous S6, but still noticable. Have to use the phone a bit the upcoming days to find out how much it will annoy me, and whether I will return the phone.

hmm. well, gray is the WORST culprit for AMOLED screens to show fault. man, i remember the galaxy s3 days when I worked for verizon..when i was ready to buy mine, i checked each phone before picking the one i wanted because no lie, i saw so many amoled issues with splotchy screens and just lines in the screen that you can see on gray. remember hte days of blotchy ink looking on a black screen too? man, this is kinda reminding me of the S3 days haha nostalgia i guess..
if anyone has a screen with perfect gray uniformity (and without pink / green discoloration), please post.
My got this problem too. I'll send it back to service on Monday, don't want to ignore this issue.
On bright screen it is difficult to see but on lower screen in dark rooms it's an disturbing effect.

notice the pink / darker bottom of the S7E (and i bet the gray test will show that part to be darker too) against the perfect Note 5 screen in this video:
https://youtu.be/vw7BGfKBd9k?t=5m30s
This is a common problem since the Galaxy S2 days, a lot of consumers have accepted this as a norm which leads me to believe that samsung is just slacking on the quality control. Im getting an S7 soon I have high hopes on the screen lottery..

Very weird
An amoled screen should be pitch black, for it does not activate black pixels, i havent see this before, you should go back with your S7.
those are gray images not black.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 using Tapatalk
so here's some anecdotal evidence. went through 3 Edge and 4 regular display models and only 1 regular (gold) variant had perfect grey uniformity and pretty even whites. the rest showed very pronounced gradient effect with the grey background on either top or bottom.

No, it's really not. I only notice it when the phone boots up. I emailed them to see what they said. In my experience with IPS displays, they have always had bleeding to some extent or another. LG was notorious for backlight bleeding on their older devices at least
The light bleed isn't that bad.
For dead pixels, how may dead pixels do you have? There is a certain number that is still within specifications. Also, are the deal pixels black or bright?
god, i hope dead pixels don't start to become an issue. in this day and age that's really a deal-breaker whether it's within specifications or not.
Light bleed would be a huge issue for me. Not for what i paid for this phone, and knowing the customer service they have. I'll just send it back.

I have two completely dead pixels. Top center of the screen. You can see them with the phone completely off, which is odd. (Might be dust under the glass, though doesn't look like that)
I also have 3 stuck / super bright pixels. These are all clustered in the top right.
Build quality as in feel is great
Build quality as in workmanship is horrible.
Backlight bleed here too. Also:
Essential should have specified far better quality work for the titanium on this phone. It looks like Foxcon just used course grit sandpaper to round the edges of the phone and it both looks and feels terrible. It is such an annoyance that even after 2 days of use I still cant get used to it and every time I ahve the phone in my hand I feel like it is a piece of junk. I had originally decided to give it 2 days before I made up my mind about this but now after 2 days I still hate it too much. Ill give it the week but if I still cant get used to it then the phone is going back
You've said that but aren't showing us what you mean, does it look rough or just feel rough in the hand? Is it intentional to add grip or is it uneven and visually bad?
Maybe titanium has a more coarse feeling in the hand than machined aluminum since nothing else has used it before?
As for Dead Pixels, yea I don't care what the standard for acceptance is on that, if the number is =>1 I will send it back. Light bleed I can handle, but even a single pixel is a freaking eyesore on a $700 device. Hell No.
No company is immune from them but I will not accept it from any. Heck I got a $39 tablet from the Windows Store with a 1920x1200 screen and it had a bunch. Got it replaced (I think Just the screen as it looks like its been opened/put together again lol) but the replacement screen is perfect now.

I had originally decided to give it 2 days before I made up my mind about this but now after 2 days I still hate it too much. Ill give it the week but if I still cant get used to it then the phone is going back

Reddish Hue Screen Color Normal ? Return this device ?

Hi Guys,
Need some advice. Just picked up a galaxy s8 plus for my personal device. I had one already for work. Noticed the work device has a much cooler screen and looks more white to me. Noticed the S8 plus i picked up for my personal has a redder hue to it. I tweaked the different modes in display but the personal device just cant get as cool or white as the work device I have. The work device (Left) is the US Snapdragon model and the personal ( right) is the international exynos model. Is this hue worth returning over or is this variation in screens normal. Looked at a Note 8 i have and it resembles the work device and is cooler and whiter as well. Any ways i can get the whites the same on my personal device ? Coincidentally the device on the right was manufactured 4/27/2017 while the device on the left was made 3/23/2017. I have also tried the display tweaks and the *#15987# trick.

Return it. That's how my first looked, and no matter how I adjust the tone, it couldn't get white. My replacement is normal. I almost kept the first thinking it's normal per the number of reports I've seen about it, but I'm so glad I exchanged it.
Thanks for the feedback

Just to rule it out, you don't have the Blue Light filter on right?

red tint is a common issue on Samsung amoled displays! I had to exchange my device 6 times (!!) to get a decent screen, just look at my posts regarding that!

Nvm
I'd keep it. Looks better than your other one. Definitely more natural
I own a small repair shop and actually had a client with this issue last week. Unfortunately for her, the phone was bought from eBay and it didn't had any warranty, so she couldn't ask for a replacement, thus coming to my shop. I kept looking for a solution all day long, but she eventually sold it.
Thanks

Hopefully they remedy eventually. Was reading and some Note 8's even have the same issue. Guess you have to get used to it.
I would stick with basic. It is what everything but HDR content is supposed to be viewed in.
That yellowish tint is totally normal and how it should be. The phone you have pictured on the left has way too cool of an image.

had to go through about 4 exchanges when the iPhone SE came out due to yellowing on the display, so i feel your pain of going through the hassle of having to exchange 6! fortunately, i lucked out with the S8+ and the first replacement is perfect.
