[Q] Where did all my Free Space go? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Aloha,
I remove all pictures and videos from my WP7 Focus when I sync, but it seems I am still losing free space.
Any suggestions on 'figuring out' what is using up my space and how to clear some things out?

Maybe it's the internet cache or something.
Is there even an option in WP7 to clear the Internet Cache?

Try settings, slide your finger across the top to the applications tab, click on internet explorer press delete history, do the same for maps.

Presumably you're syncing with Zune in which case remember it reserves a large chunk of storage space. This is empty space but, as it is reserved, it is subtracted from the free space figure Zune reports.

In Zune settings, if you change the reserved space to a lower percentage (say, 2%) then try installing a few apps, some of it will not be installed. So while you could keep a lower reserved space, it would be pointless if you download apps and games very often, because at some point you wouldn't be able to install any more without increasing the reserved space. The space taken by pictures, videos, etc is shown to you separately in the small bar before the reserved space quota (hover your mouse over them)
I personally think there is no need for such storage-management and it even confuses users to see ~2 gigs of space reserved by default with the first time you use it, so normal users would really be baffled

[Q] 'Reserved space and content from other computers'..WHAAAT???

Hi,
I have been searching around but cannot find an answer to this...my WP7 in Zune is coming up with 2.77GB of 'reserved space and content from other computers'....now that seems like alot especially when I only have 8GB in the first place!
Now I've read things saying...reduce the amount of space reserved for apps in Zune and I've done that its down to 1% but still it is showing this huge amount of space reserved.
I have spoken to Zune Support on Twitter and their answer was to do a factory reset and re-install all my apps one by one. Does this sound right to everyone else? Should I really have to do all that?
Lastly (and sorry about the mini-rant) I have a Zune Pass and I have also read that by resetting my phone it will make Zune recognise it as a brand new device and therefore reduce the amount of devices I can use my Zune Pass on....is this correct?
Thanks for all you help everyone
Do you have a lot of apps etc?
You Silly!
Just go to Zune device settings (on top of the zune client, of course, you need to have your phone connected), and then go to the "Reserved space" link from the list on the left side. Then reduce it to whatever percentage of your phone's memory you want. Basically, reserved space is a certain percentage of the storage on your phone that is put aside for app installs, pdfs, docs, etc. So when you fill up your phone with pictures, music, and videos, you would have some space for ... other things.
There is no reseting required whatsoever.
I dont have that many apps.....and I have done what you said already (reduced to 1%) and still I have this huge amount of space taken up...its just annoying!
I completely understand the problem of sergoiacobucci.
On my HD7 (16GB) there is also 1.36GB reserved space for "content of other computers", even though I reduced the reserved space in the settings to 0%.
If I play around a little with the percenteges the reserved space goes down from everything I have left on my device to 1.5GB at 1% and 1.36GB at 0%.
Meaning I also can't get it any lower.
Of course your problem is 4 times more annoing than 8% gone on a 16GB device, but I'd still like to know whatfore this space is used/how to use it for myself.

He stated in the OP that he's already lowered this to 1%.
OP have you ever synced with more than one computers?
Pretty sure the reserved space includes space taken up by anything outside of media. I just downloaded a game and my reserved space went from 1.22 GB to 1.32 GB. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it sounds like you just have a lot of non-media data on your phone.
I don't know about the reserved space thing but as for Zune Pass. You can remove devices from your 4 devices in the settings. So adding a new device wont take up your 4, just remove the old one from the list

are you suggesting this might be causing the issue? i'm syncing with 2 pc's and my available space has gone from 3.02GB to 2.12GB with only a few apps installed and 1GB of music. i'm not concerned about the "shrinking space" now, but would like to know how it's used/allocated.
Hi everyone and thanks for the replies.
I have only ever connected it to one computer.....i just un-installed about 3 games and it has reduced the reserved space from 2.77GB to 2GB...so maybe the games take up alot more space than I realised...
Bit of a worry though to be honest, as more and more good apps/games come out I am going to quickly run out of space!
it depends on the games tbh. most games are small, but the big ones which we all like take up quite a bit (e.g. need for speed and guitar hero).

It says on the marketplace page how much space each application/game takes up. It's down near the bottom where it says "released dd/mm/yyyy, version x.x.x.x, xxMB".
For example, "The Sims 3" is 113MB, "Guitar Hero 5" is 201MB, and "Monopoly" is 24MB. So, there's a good range of sizes.
I can't find this info in the Zune software, though, so I think it's only in the marketplace on the phone.
yeah, I've got a lot of games on my phone and even though I have it set at 5% (I think the standard setting), it is reserved at about 4gb of stuff. But I have about 20-30 games (about 12 xbox live titles), like harvest, need for speed, etc.
I don't worry about it. I don't put a ton of music on my phone since I have zune pass.
I know exactly what you mean and here's an article explaining it as well as how to somewhat resolve it. http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2009...content-from-other-computers-if-any-quot.aspx
That explains a lot. Thanks for sharing that!
okay. so far so good. but i experience some problem about this reserved space: i am not able to change it. i can move the bar so i get different percentages but it does not take any effect.
this is frustrating because im not able to put anything new to my device...
any ideas?

I'd suggest wiping the system like I'm going to. I have 2.67GB of reserved space that I can't get rid of, and I followed the instructions from that link. Wiping it might do the trick.
I'm having this problem as well. What is the point of having a reserved space?! Why can't the space just fill up like usual and let me delete stuff when it gets completely full? There is no reason for a reserved space (in my mind) that can't be removed without starting all over.
My reserved space has filled up to 2.5gb and says I have 0.0 free space on the zune software. When I go check my phone however, it says I have 565mb free. So this means I can't sync anymore music even though my phone says it has 1/2 gb free?
Thanks for the link!
I always had this problem whenever I sync with my mac after syncing with zune on windows 7. However I did figure out a work around. I use the "I choose" sync method and simply drag all my playlists to the hd7 icon. Whenever I the reserve space issue occurs, I simply re-drag back the playlists and the sync groups are essentially recreated without having to resync the music.

Help Resyncing everything / Reset?

So I have this problem with storagespace and reserved space.
2,5gb Music
175mb videos,
25mb pictures
3,5GB!!! Reserved space from other computers Even though I have set Reserved settings to 0%.
There is probably something wrong here so I need to resync everything.
So the question is, how do I do that without loosing my apps?
Is a hardreset the only way?
If so, will I get back the non free apps?
Is there a smarter way than hard reseting?
Experiences I made concerning this is that most often a simple soft reset (just shut down and restart the device) frees some space. If that doesn't help, you can delete all your synched data and resynch it again. This way you won't lose your apps. Deleting your data is quite simple. Launch Zune and go to settings. On the top of the list it says "synchronisation settings" or something similar. Choose that and scroll down in the right part of the window. On the very bottom there are two options to choose from. The left one should say "delete my data" or so (I have the German version, so I don't exactly know what it is called in the English version).
Thanx! I will try that!
But I think there is some app-installation etc that has screwed upp the memory on the phone. And to get rid of that I guess a hard-reset is the only way?
Possibly. But most storage related issue I came across so far where always caused by an aborted or a somehow erroneous synchronisation.

I think if you sync on more than one pc it duplicates the storage.
Or... That space is where your apps are stored.

[Q] [Howto] Clear Backup contents and Apps isolated memory?

Hi,
Surprisingly after installing playing many games and trying out applications, now my phone has only 100mb free space left, which is indeed worrying me.
Since 3.9GB out of 8GB is showing as "Reserve Space and other content" in Zune.
But I need to clear out any unnecessary backup data and applications isolated data so that I can get most of the space back.
Phone: Omnia W
Developer unlocked only. No full unlock available yet.

In Zune you can set your reserved content to about 500mb if you want and you can get other space for storage. Double click on the 'orange' reserved content you will be able to decide how much you want to reserve. Uninstalling apps will get rid of it's storage etc.
If nothing helps, hard reset and you are good to go.
If your phone is interop-unlocked (WindowBreak or similar) you can install WP7 Root Tools and then use it to enable appSiege, which will let you see how much data each app is using up.
Uninstalling an app deletes all its isolated storage files. You can then re-install the app if you still want to have it on the phone. Some apps also have a feature to purge their cached data.
Given how much data you have in the OS, it's possible you're keeping email for too long. You may want to either sync fewer email folders or keep the synced files for a shorter time (most of my accounts only keep messages for two weeks). You can also try deleting your Internet Explorer cache (Settings -> Applications -> Internet Explorer -> Delete History) although that will delete your saved passwords and such too... it's possible to delete just the temp files, but doing so requires high-privilege access to the filesystem.

[Q] low space?

Hi, i have a samsung focus (original) and on ZUNE is says i have 100mb free space, but in the info section of the phone it says i have 800mbs. When i deploy alot of xap files and noticed ZUNE calculates that each xap uses more space then the acutal XAP size. I used the microsoft XAP deployer. Is there a way to fix this issue and make it so zune recognized the full amount of free space i have left?
Several things:
Zune reports the amount of space left for it to sync files into. This is typically less than the actual free space remaining on the phone, because some space is reserved.
You can turn down the amount of reserved space in the Settings -> Phone view in Zune. Reducing this reserved space will allow you to sync more content, at the risk of the phone running out of space due to you doing something like downloading a big app. It sounds like you've got about 700-ish MB reserved right now, which is probably 5% (of the 14-odd GB left of a 16GB storage chip minus the ROM image). I have it set to 3% on my phone.
XAP files are ZIP archives; the files inside are compressed. This means that the download size is pretty much always smaller than the install size. Additionally, when you run the app, additional space will be claimed by the app for storage. You can see the current storage footprint of each app using the AppSiege app (in the dev&hacking sub-forum).
Thanks, thats helped me find some files with a lot of memory used. But after removing several apps the difference between Zune and the WP7 free space is sitll just over 500mb liek before. I noticed when i deploy a larger xap, and uninstall it right after, that Zune seems to lower the memory. For example i install 100mb xap, it would use 120 mb in zune, and when i uninstall it, i would be 20mb less then when i originally started, but the WP7 info says its the same as when its started.

Storage limit for apps

Hey, I remarked the excessive use of storage from many apps on my phone, such as Instagram (1.2GB), Tiktok (1GB)...
Does someone know how to limit the use of space for specific apps ?
I know that somehow, android tells the apps when there's no space left
Maybe someone can clone this functionality to fool the app
Why would you install those junk apks at all?
It's just asking for trouble... security risk.

Well... I need them to keep in contact with my friends, that's why, and they are taking much place for nothing
Every app allocates itself storage space it needs to get first run, then it may increase this storage space at any time. With regards to so-called Social Media apps: The more you use such an app, the more space the app takes up on your phone, unless you clear the cache of such an app.
