Hi,
I have been searching around but cannot find an answer to this...my WP7 in Zune is coming up with 2.77GB of 'reserved space and content from other computers'....now that seems like alot especially when I only have 8GB in the first place!
Now I've read things saying...reduce the amount of space reserved for apps in Zune and I've done that its down to 1% but still it is showing this huge amount of space reserved.
I have spoken to Zune Support on Twitter and their answer was to do a factory reset and re-install all my apps one by one. Does this sound right to everyone else? Should I really have to do all that?
Lastly (and sorry about the mini-rant) I have a Zune Pass and I have also read that by resetting my phone it will make Zune recognise it as a brand new device and therefore reduce the amount of devices I can use my Zune Pass on....is this correct?
Thanks for all you help everyone
Do you have a lot of apps etc?
You Silly!
Just go to Zune device settings (on top of the zune client, of course, you need to have your phone connected), and then go to the "Reserved space" link from the list on the left side. Then reduce it to whatever percentage of your phone's memory you want. Basically, reserved space is a certain percentage of the storage on your phone that is put aside for app installs, pdfs, docs, etc. So when you fill up your phone with pictures, music, and videos, you would have some space for ... other things.
There is no reseting required whatsoever.
I dont have that many apps.....and I have done what you said already (reduced to 1%) and still I have this huge amount of space taken up...its just annoying!
I completely understand the problem of sergoiacobucci.
On my HD7 (16GB) there is also 1.36GB reserved space for "content of other computers", even though I reduced the reserved space in the settings to 0%.
If I play around a little with the percenteges the reserved space goes down from everything I have left on my device to 1.5GB at 1% and 1.36GB at 0%.
Meaning I also can't get it any lower.
Of course your problem is 4 times more annoing than 8% gone on a 16GB device, but I'd still like to know whatfore this space is used/how to use it for myself.

He stated in the OP that he's already lowered this to 1%.
OP have you ever synced with more than one computers?
Pretty sure the reserved space includes space taken up by anything outside of media. I just downloaded a game and my reserved space went from 1.22 GB to 1.32 GB. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it sounds like you just have a lot of non-media data on your phone.
I don't know about the reserved space thing but as for Zune Pass. You can remove devices from your 4 devices in the settings. So adding a new device wont take up your 4, just remove the old one from the list

are you suggesting this might be causing the issue? i'm syncing with 2 pc's and my available space has gone from 3.02GB to 2.12GB with only a few apps installed and 1GB of music. i'm not concerned about the "shrinking space" now, but would like to know how it's used/allocated.
Hi everyone and thanks for the replies.
I have only ever connected it to one computer.....i just un-installed about 3 games and it has reduced the reserved space from 2.77GB to 2GB...so maybe the games take up alot more space than I realised...
Bit of a worry though to be honest, as more and more good apps/games come out I am going to quickly run out of space!
it depends on the games tbh. most games are small, but the big ones which we all like take up quite a bit (e.g. need for speed and guitar hero).

It says on the marketplace page how much space each application/game takes up. It's down near the bottom where it says "released dd/mm/yyyy, version x.x.x.x, xxMB".
For example, "The Sims 3" is 113MB, "Guitar Hero 5" is 201MB, and "Monopoly" is 24MB. So, there's a good range of sizes.
I can't find this info in the Zune software, though, so I think it's only in the marketplace on the phone.
yeah, I've got a lot of games on my phone and even though I have it set at 5% (I think the standard setting), it is reserved at about 4gb of stuff. But I have about 20-30 games (about 12 xbox live titles), like harvest, need for speed, etc.
I don't worry about it. I don't put a ton of music on my phone since I have zune pass.
I know exactly what you mean and here's an article explaining it as well as how to somewhat resolve it. http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2009...content-from-other-computers-if-any-quot.aspx
That explains a lot. Thanks for sharing that!
okay. so far so good. but i experience some problem about this reserved space: i am not able to change it. i can move the bar so i get different percentages but it does not take any effect.
this is frustrating because im not able to put anything new to my device...
any ideas?

I'd suggest wiping the system like I'm going to. I have 2.67GB of reserved space that I can't get rid of, and I followed the instructions from that link. Wiping it might do the trick.
I'm having this problem as well. What is the point of having a reserved space?! Why can't the space just fill up like usual and let me delete stuff when it gets completely full? There is no reason for a reserved space (in my mind) that can't be removed without starting all over.
My reserved space has filled up to 2.5gb and says I have 0.0 free space on the zune software. When I go check my phone however, it says I have 565mb free. So this means I can't sync anymore music even though my phone says it has 1/2 gb free?
Thanks for the link!
I always had this problem whenever I sync with my mac after syncing with zune on windows 7. However I did figure out a work around. I use the "I choose" sync method and simply drag all my playlists to the hd7 icon. Whenever I the reserve space issue occurs, I simply re-drag back the playlists and the sync groups are essentially recreated without having to resync the music.
Aloha,
I remove all pictures and videos from my WP7 Focus when I sync, but it seems I am still losing free space.
Any suggestions on 'figuring out' what is using up my space and how to clear some things out?

Maybe it's the internet cache or something.
Is there even an option in WP7 to clear the Internet Cache?
Try settings, slide your finger across the top to the applications tab, click on internet explorer press delete history, do the same for maps.
Presumably you're syncing with Zune in which case remember it reserves a large chunk of storage space. This is empty space but, as it is reserved, it is subtracted from the free space figure Zune reports.
In Zune settings, if you change the reserved space to a lower percentage (say, 2%) then try installing a few apps, some of it will not be installed. So while you could keep a lower reserved space, it would be pointless if you download apps and games very often, because at some point you wouldn't be able to install any more without increasing the reserved space. The space taken by pictures, videos, etc is shown to you separately in the small bar before the reserved space quota (hover your mouse over them)
I personally think there is no need for such storage-management and it even confuses users to see ~2 gigs of space reserved by default with the first time you use it, so normal users would really be baffled
Been really frustrated the past few days with the amount of times my surface has become deathly slow/unresponsive and crashes (restarts).
When I say unresponsive or slow I mean when you try left to right swipe to multi task it doesn't do it or the animation is really slow. similarly opening charms bar doesn't work or pressing windows button doesnt do anything.
A lot of times, 90% of the time the only thing I'm using is IE and bing.
Just now crashed/rebooted and saw a message on desktop
Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified.
When you click OK it loads Performance Options window and the virtual memory is set to 448 MB
I have never configured this before. What should it be set to?
Getting quite frustrated. Been happy using this device for months now without any such problems.
Right now, I'm pretty much guaranteed a crash or suffer extreme performance issues when loading a single a youtube page. ie becomes unresponsive even after closing the tab swiping up or down may or may not work. tapping windows haptic button doesnt show start screen, pressing lock button does not immediately turn off screen.
448 MB is the same size as the paging file on my Surface RT. In practice, despite heavy use of things like third-party desktop apps and games, I've almost never needed it. I keep a relatively large number of tabs open in IE - it's using 236MB right now, by far the largest of any given program although spread across multiple processes - and have never had the issues you describe, either.
I suspect your Surface may be defective. It's possible that there's some bad RAM - on x86 I'd tell you to run memcheck - or that your Flash memory (SSD) is defective and this is messing up the pagefile. Either one would be covered under warranty.
Are you running low on free space on ssd?
Could possibly be a bum app. I can't recall the app but my RT got very flaky after loading an app from the store and required a wipe to get back to normal.
Yes last night as I was attempting to record the situation with my phone for a youtube post. I noticed I had like 150MB free space. So I immediately removed 2 apps which free'd up about 1GB. It was late and I was mad, and needed to go to bed, but I suspect that was the main problem. And I'll know for sure when I get home from work today.
As I recall the windows folder contained about 7GB and my program data folder also had about 7G, My Documents and downloads is <100MB so that's not anything to worry about, and recycle bin is empty.
32GB is supposed to work out to around 29 something after marketing math right? So then between those two folders, <15GB is utilized and so lets say 4GB for recovery partition (I think its a little less if I remember) that's 19... so where's the other 10?
I am definitely going to delete the backup partition after I make a backup on a usb drive or something. Any other tricks to free up space? Disk clean up is only really good for about 50MB.
I wish there was an app in the market place kind of like TreeSize Free, would be handy for us Surface RT folks.
My device is having absolutely the same issue. Must be a bad update.
The 32GB Surface RT OS install footprint is something like 7GB or so. Add in the recovery partition and you end up with a lot less than 32GB available. This was actually published info (and MS took a beating over it).
Part of the large install footprint is due to things like Office being included. You really can't compare it to Android or iOS, either; Windows RT has things like Powershell and Management Console and tons of other power-user / admin stuff. It's intended to be usable for a lot more than just a platform to launch apps on, which is most of what you get from Android or iOS. Love it or hate it, that's the way it is.
Stick an microSD card in the slot and move anything that can be moved over onto it. Definitely also copy off the recovery partition and then recover the space it was using up.
So as I mentioned last night I removed a couple of apps for 1gb of space. Then I guess there was a system update and now I'm back down to like 500MB. I deleted a couple more apps and somehow I'm down to 400MB.
I'm still getting this ****ty behavior. Not quite as bad as it was, but still not an experience I would recommend to anyone.

Did you manage to get more space?
As you say, we have 29 GB on SSD. 4 GB is in restore and EFI partitions leaving us with 25GB.
If I select everything in C:/ it takes 12 GB. I have 9 GB free. So I have 25 GB - 12 GB - 9 GB = 4GB of unkown space. The page file is ~2 GB on my surface leaving me with 2 GB of unkown space. If this where a Windows 8 machine I would say that those 2 GB was used for hibernating but I don't think that Windows RT has hibernating enabled.
Maybe Properties in Explorer isn't 100% accurate.
When you used Disk clean, did you also clean System files? Update backups can get large.

That 2GB is probably in folders that you don't have read access to by default (Ex. WindowsApps)
If I try to press the button for clean system files, 1GB in error reporting, 500MB temporary files, 400MB windows update cleanup, some other misc stuff so 2.01in total... after cleaning I only had 1.38 free, wtf is up with this math. I already had 450MB free... deleting 2GB should have netted me 2.4GB, not 1.38
I got a message earlier saying it couldn't activate windows, it seemed fix itself.

Didn't Windows reserve more MB to page file?
I have totally 14GB of files ( Including page file and system folders ). However Surface reports that I have only 2GB free instead if 14 ( 28-14=14). I did disk clean-up for all users and I manually cleared some data... I can't even do a refresh because I don't have enough free space.

I'm guessing that it's because what netham45 said. We don't have read access to folders like WindowsApps. You have some huge games or something like that installed?
I think you need to try "refresh" your Surface. If this happen again then it maybe defected.

Not really. I checked my apps and they are taking around 3.5GB all together. Still I'm missing a lot.
I can't refresh as I don't have free space. Looks like I need to totally reinstall.
Hi, I found 10GB sitting in C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\Packages\windows_ie_ac_001\AC\INetCache
Seems that clean-up wizard does not clean those.

Did your tablet fine now? Or still slow or crashing?
With 1.48GB free, YouTube is still crashing me and making my tablet unresponsive.
I checked C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Packages\windows_ie_ac_001\AC
Properties on this folder says 4.8 GB. But inside are only 2 folders, Microsoft and Temp, properties for those 2 folders says 3.18MB...
Control Panel> Folder Options> View has show hidden folders enabled
If I type \inetcache it will open the folder for me and properties for all docs in folder shows 1.49G
If I try to del C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Packages\windows_ie_ac_001\AC\INetCache
It prompts yes or no, but then I get access denied.
In the desktop though I could select all and shift delete, to free up MOST of those files. but there's still 2.87GB hidden somewhere when I view properties of the AC folder.
I looked at some of the contents and these folders and its just like thumbails, js files, various cache (obviously as folder name implies)
I've resorted to deleting 2 more infrequently used games, so now I have 2.26GB free... haven't yet removed backup partition.
Files shouldnt cause the tablet to lock up like that, plenty of room left for the page file there.
I think your device is most likely faulty. Vendor should replace.
So let's get straight to the point. Two days ago I moved all of my apps to the sd card in order to have enough space to install the newly released FIFA 14.
Had 1.4 gigs of free space on internal memory, but still after downloading it, it said that I had insufficient space available and didn't install it (My LG L9 asks for 200+MB minimal free space to be left), but the problem is that after the failed installation attempt I never got the free space back. Now no matter what I do, I can't get more than 300MB of free space on the internal memory. It was right after I tried to install FIFA... looks like some cached files are still remaining, but the game isn't installed.
Also reinstalled another CM 10.2 rom, but still with a fresh install and no apps at all, had 343MB of free space? dfq?
Hope it's enough info.
Any ideas?
Hi,
I found out (http://phandroid.com/2013/09/24/fifa-14-android/) that FIFA 14 requires 1.3 GB of free space.
You had 1.4GB, LG needs at least 200MB (0.2 GB), so you only have 1.2 GB free - not enough for FIFA 14 that needs 1.3 GB.
It looks like your failed FIFA 14 installation left a lot of junk file behind. It probably downloaded the partial install files to your phone internal memory, and then when the phone detects insufficient memory (LG's 200 MB requirement), the phone refuses to accept anymore, so now you are down to only 300 MB left (LG's safeguard reserve memory requirement).
Use file explorer or Total Commander.
Check your Downloads folders (internal memory and/or sdcard) the unfinished download may be there.
If not, then look at the Temporary folders (temp, tmp). Look for a large file of about 1GB.
If you find the file, delete it and you will regain the free space.
If the above does not work, then the alternative will be a factory reset to bring your phone to its original condition when it left the factory.
Remember to backup your data first (contacts, appointments, files, etc)
Google forces people to have at least 500mb of free space saying "some crashes may happen" (they actually don't and if they do I/people can manage that).
Freed up all space on phone, removed all files, removed almost all apps, but space used up (probably by internal partitions such as /data /system etc) increases so:
I mostly can't ****ing use phone any more;
can't install any app (even from USB, yeah I unchecked the damn "protect device" options),
can't enable ADB (because of some other WebView error, which too is related to how google/android works, can't access Dev Settings, they always crash , yes even with >500mb of free space),
can't view email (only in Gmail) (without a workaround,
can't download files (only in Google Drive) and so on...
Clearly this is a google problem, I wish I (and anybody else) never had to use an android/iphone etc.
When rooted etc, all this was never a problem, I also even could do all until there was actually 0mb available.
I need to do this to test some app I'd like to develop.
I can root, etc. each phone, but I'd rather keep putting it off (as I'm developing a hatred for all this, including anti user technology)
@StackExploit
It's NOT Google who notifies you when your Android device has less than 500MB free storage space, but Android OS.
The Android >=500MB free storage space rule is because of 'operating capital' - it needs space to store temporary files as you use apps, it needs space to download updates to and space to store the uncompressed update files prior to installing them ( it should delete the compressed and uncompressed update files automatically after install ), etc.pp.
If Android's storage memory is 32GB ( 32,768MB ) then 500MB correspond to ~2%, if it's 16GB ( 16,384MB ) then it corresponds to ~3%. IMO ridiculously low shares. Take note that Windows & Mac computers have the at minimum 10% free space rule.
In answer to your actual question: I don't believe there's a way around this restriction. Not unless you had rooted and used a custom ROM that specifically mentioned that as a feature. Even if you could bypass it, you'd probably run into other problems (e.g. performance) as a consequence.
Yes, of course, I didn't mention this need of space for temp files (which most often don't take up anywhere near as much as 500mb), because I explained instead for example that I can manage if things crash. These files should be in RAM instead when possible anyway(!).
Well, the min storage is 3% but so what when you can't upgrade any parts like storage and external storage is still lagging behind in so many cases. The higher prices for devices with more (of the same non removable) internal storage are ridiculous.
