No 4G??? Why all the fanfare? Aren't 3G devices pretty much headed for obsolete street already?
Seriously, what am I missing? Why would a major manufacturer introduce it's new "flagship high end" phone with this speed handicap??? Will the video calling even work on 3G?
Any why all the interest here? Isn't basically it just a Vibrant with no sd card and 2.3?

7.2MB/s down and ~5MB/s up...is plenty fast even for video calling
I agree, this thing is way out of control on name (nexus) alone. But I will say what is 4G? According to standards agreed upon by a standards conference this is what that means:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Every carrier, starting with sprint is lying about 4g. There is a HUGE discrepancy from what the standard was set as and what they deliver.
To me the idea that a phone branded nexus does not have an sd slot and a 16g internal is crazy. Add that to t-mobile 3g? Where is the iphone giant killer? We all know what it should be, they know what it is too. To me, while nexus s may be a great addition to the galaxy line, it seems like phone manufacturers just laugh and take our money.
Why should we have to decide memory over front facing camera? Processor over screen type?
I would argue that google may have forgotten what the point was in the first place.
EVERYTHING, THE BEST, AND YOU GET TO SHAPE IT!
Mediocre cams and weak memory, good lord, next thing you know we got google nexus junior with pre paid minutes.
So, are you complaining about no "4G" or are you complaining about people being all "Hell no, where's the 4G? I'm gonna kill someone tonight." Just wandering. Got confused when I read the title and the post.
Because 3G at 7.2 Megabits (not MB/sec) is more than adequate. Average speed for the HSPA+ network ranges from 2-5Mbps (not official) with peaks of 10-12Mbps. Those peaks are a rarity on a site with almost no traffic. You'll need a strong & good signal to boot.
I hate this "adequate" argument.
There was a time when 512kb broadband was fine. There was a time people thought you don't need more than 256kb of RAM on a PC.
Fact is, if you don't put the new technology out there, we won't find uses for it. Nexus S hasn't brought anything new of SIGNIFICANCE - is my problem. Being evolutionary to a Nexus One, which is coming to a year old, isn't acceptable, especially when you use tech which has been around for time, but more importantly, miss tech which has been used for months.

It's more than that. It's a pure Google phone. Pure open. It will be the focus of Android. And that's what it is out for. The Nexus One is collecting dust. This is a hefty enough upgrade. The Tegra 2 itself barely outperforms the hummingbird anyway, and this Dual Core Snapdragon crap is all rumors but possible, but probably won't be out for another 6~ months. Of course, wait another 6 months, then the dual core epic nexus will come out (and people will complain because it isn't quad core)
It's a great, gorgeous, and powerful phone. It's everything I wanted out of my Vibrant originally. I'm getting it, and it's awesome, and I'm 99% sure I'm gonna love it with no complaints and never look back.
As for HSPA+, very few places actually get advantages from this. T-Mobile's 3g is already faster than LTE or Wimax will be for another year. The only way you'd benefit from HSPA+ is if you are peaking at 7.2mbps already and want to go past that, which I have. I've gotten 10mbps on a G2. 7.2 on Vibrant. But really, they average 4-8, both of them.
Thanks for the responses. 1 more question... So, this S phone has software supported by Google, not Samsung? And if so, how would software updates be expected to differ from Samsung software updates? (which are slow coming if they come at all.)
For N1 owners how does it work? OTA updates pushed by Google?
I'm not a sophisticated user... I have a rooted Vibrant never flashed. It is, to me, a phenomenal device. I'd like to learn more about flashing roms and get some experience but I cannot risk my phone.... yet.
I'm thinking about getting the S and then I can feel better about using & tweaking the Vibrant as a learning tool.

Tegra 2 is old news, Orion is what we are looking forward to.
hellcatrydr the Nexus One and Nexus S will have OTA software updates pushed directly from Google. The Nexus One had Froyo before anyone else. I expect the same to be true of the Nexus S.
Not all mobile operator has HSPA+
I can live with 3G, it is fast enough (1.5 Mbps average).
Also, I cannot wait any longer to have a Google phone!

Both manufacturer and carrier have a horrible track record when it comes to software updates. No one wants to use the previous software version when a newer one exists.

Orion is old news. Aquila is what we are looking forward to.
All current HSPA devices will gain profit though "so called 4G" upgrade.
Now I get much lower latency (40-130ms) with MyTouch 4 over 3.75G.
Except you have to run 5 or more computers on the network or run 1080p youtube (3-4Mbps), current HSPA network is more than enough, GUARANTEED!

I don't think we'll see the Aquila in phones... There will probably be a new quad core for that. And it'll probably be late 2013 the soonest before we can even expect quad cores to be planned for production for phones.
I just had to ask you guys/girls. I went to the store and this old lady in a wheel chair told the sales guy " I want the thunderbolt, where is it?" This thing is HOT?
I love it. Really a good phone...
I don't get 4G here so I think it's alright. Not the best. I'm coming from TMO and had a G2. I hate the battery life on this phone. It idles at 100+ma with the screen off as appose to my G2 which was around 30ma and my Nexus One at 3ma. But the display is really nice. I guess I'm just remorseful for leaving TMO.
Edit: just realized that all the other g2 find I was comparing this to had custom kernels so its unfair to compare both.
Phone is awesome, definitely worth the cash

How do you measure that? Also, you can turn off 4g if its not available in your area.
I like the phone...but seeing how I am right on the line for 3g and 4g, I have yet to be able to fully experience the speed possiblities. The problem I have is battery life, coming from TMO and a Vibrant and an HD2, both which were far better. I'm still experimenting with settings however, and i'm sure once I root, and a few custom ROM's come out, it will be tons better. Nothing but good things can come from a piece of equipment like this.
I love most of it.. There are minor annoyances, but I don't think I've ever owned a "perfect phone". I've gone past the point of no turning back (returns) and I'm happy about it.
I left T-Mobile this past Sunday. After I heard the news of AT&T buying them out, I knew I had to move on. I was using the Galaxy S 4G, which now for sale.
Anyway, I feel that I made the right move. I really love the Thunderbolt very much! None of the phones @ TMO has anything on this bad boy. Can't even tell you how much faster the TB is over any of the 4G phones I had on TMO.
Yes I know Battery Sucks, but Cant Expect Good Gas Mileage out of a ferrari... I can look at other phones and specs, but I have tried everything, and there isnt anything that this phone doesnt do.
And of course the 2 biggest reasons for me getting it:
- LTE, amazing in Orlando, Fl
- Talk and Surf, I literally needed this, and use it a lot when I drive with maps and talking.

I recently sold my iphone 4 (att) and converted to android. This is my first handset. I have been LOOOOOVVVVIIINNNGGGGGG this phone. Now that i can set my phone to stay on 3g or 4g battery has improved much and the LTE speeds ive gotten in NYC are amazing. Was bored of iOS. Really loving the tinkering with this phone. Now waiting for that easy root and cyanogen Gingerbread ROM
I am in love.
I came from ATT and the Tilt2
I love VZW.
I love Android
I love the TB

I left Tmo today also. I sold my g2, and im moving on. It breaks my heart to hear that the idiots at stupid T & T are going to corrupt Tmobile. But whatever i guess...business is business.
Im picking up my thunderbolt tomorrow from work, and im not going to look back anymore. I do miss my G2 and wish i coulda used it for Verizon, but whatevs.
A lil FYI guys!
My settings currently:
LTE only
extended battery
11 hrs off charger
47% battery left. being using it a pretty good amount also. Seems cdma/lte must be what is hurting battery life.
P.S. - yes i love my thunderbolt and could never imagine returning it for a bionic or anything else in the near future honestly.
Absolutely happy, great phone, network, and best community. Can't wait for future updates! More to come!

Yeah I love it, it was worth the wait and I'm not even in a 4G area but its what i wanted, screen size, processor, ram all to my liking and I'm anti Moto now because of eFUSE with the DX and such. X was gonna be my choice but I canceled that pre-order when I heard about the eFUSE. So HTC it is and Tbolt is just to my liking. Rooted in under 5 days and running VirusROM R1B2 and loving it.
Im stuck in between these two phones. Can anyone give me any PROS AND CONS between these two phones?
Only pro to the Bolt is VZW network and LTE speeds.

If T-Mobile is good around your area, go Sensation. If not, go Thunderbolt. Like someone else said, the only pro over the Sensation the Thunderbolt has is Verizon's reliable network and LTE.

No such thing as future proof...Just saying.
It's probably going to be down to what network you want more than anything. I don't have a choice. I'm on VZW no matter what really.
I thought the sensation was europe only. Its going ton be sold in US?
Well in my area the choice comes down to network. Maybe the specs on the sensation are better, but the reliable 3g and LTE on Verizon would make it a no trainer. However if I was in a better T-Mobile area and I wanted to wait then maybe the sensation.

Where I live, T-mobile is the only mobile provider that still runs only on Edge... And the cell reception once you leave the city I'm in is spotty just about everywhere... Although the Sensation will be a smoking device... There's a reason why all the truck drivers in these parts don't have T-mobile phones... Keep that in mind...

Here's my take...
I needed a phone now... Thunderbolt was the best Verizon had at the time...
When my upgrade is ready there will be a device better than both, and possibly more support in Android for the "newer" technology.
If I traveled away from Hawaii I would more than likely never pick up T-Mobile. Verizon gives the best overall coverage, and honestly the price isn't as drastic people make it out to be. The difference for me is $10 (Verizon gives me nearly 15% more on my discount).
So I will take what fits your wants when you need to get a new device. For me it was the thunderbolt, but chances are in a few months all the current Android devices would be considered "outdated" even though they really are not.
1. There will always be something that comes out that is BETTER. You can only get what you can when you can get it. You can't always wait for the next best thing b/c you won't ever get a phone with that mentality.
2. HTC Sensation has one of the best specs right now.
3. HTC probably sucks at locking the bootloader so HOPEFULLY you can root it.
4. Dual-core is a great concept and will help with battery life, but Android isn't optimized to take advantage of dual-core just yet so its not that big of a deal [yet].
5. Anecdote: I once chose a phone over a network. Never again. Plus things will get ported over anyways.
Last generation phones are sometime better, as well. I for one am a flash junkie, and looking at all of the mods roms and themes for older devices like the EVO I feel a bit jealous. However , by the time the Sensation is released, the Thunderbolt will have a ton of mods and roms for it. By the time the development gains momentum for the Sensation, there will be another better and newer phone coming out. You have to make the choice which you like better. All in all, I wanted an EVO with the guts of a MT4G and the network that only Verizon offers here in the US... the Thunderbolt is the phone I've been looking for

so i've got an att nexus one right now, been using that and a captivate, the screen on the captivate is excellent especially in sunlight but the browsers slow and it doesnt run gingerbread roms right now too well either.
I'm considering picking up an Inspire cause i like htc build quality, the screen is larger than the nexus one and it seems faster than both the captivate and nexus one, which are both pretty fast for what they are.
Was wondering if you guys could tell me if they've fixed the issue with "4g" and what the connection is like for you guys as im usually not on wifi, what battery life is like and how you guys are coping with the screen.
i dont know if you guys have compared it to the samsung or iphone screens but it just wanes in comparison. these are the 3 things holding me back from the purchase, right now just looking for something to hold me off till the new dual core wave comes crashing on in

When comparing anything its going to boil down to personal preference. I have had the iPhone 3g, 3gs, 4 and the Samsung captivate. I am happy with the inspire. More so then with the captivate I had gps issues and the random power down problem. And don't really miss the iPhone because i enjoy the ability to customize android and the larger screen (I also had all my phones jailbroken). In my area the "4g" connection isn't really any better then 3g. But really that's going to depend on your area. What "4g" issue are you referring to?
I personally do not like the Samsungs.. they seem to be a little more square for my taste. I love my inspire.. now Radioshack is going to start selling a red inspire instead of the standard color one. I love sense so that's why I went with an HTC

i meant for a while they didnt have the 4g antennas activated in the atrix and inspire and only recently made them usuable through an update but some were reporting no differences in speed and some found the iphone 4 almost twice as fast. i put the 4g in quotes for the lte argument yes
I think im going to throw miui on the inspire, its my favorite rom for all android phones, its like the best of both worlds, the simplicity and organization of an iphone with the customization and widgets of android.

Ok I think you miss understood what was going on with the "4g" they were not allowing the "4g" upload connection. That's all the update changed was upload capability. So that you could get "4g" upload speeds. Nothing with download connection or speed changed.
Speed always is determined on how closely are to a tower and of that tower actually supports 4g(hspa+). Most people right now won't see a big difference because hspa+ is relatively new. Personaly I get 6Mbps down such I believe is very good. BTW you cannot even compare this phone to an iPhone, it just blows it put of the water (4. 3 inch screen that is absolutely stunning for only being "super lcd", the flexibility of the Android OS is just insane, battery life is okay on stock but with the right ROM it can last well over a day, almost no defects-except battery cover issue wich has been fixed- and the amazing quality of the. Phone itself.

Personally, if I were in your position with a functional Captivate, I would stick with it for awhile as you wont see much improvement from the HTC Inspire 4G (unless you are dying to have HTC sense).
I can tell you, I came from the captivate to the inspire for two specific reasons:
1. My captivate had crummy gps and a not-so responsive back button
2. I'm an HTC fanboy
Although I'm happy with my decision, it's mainly because of the working GPS and back button. Here are the items I miss most from my captivate:
1. Touchwiz core apps. Samsungs Calendar, Clock/Alarm, contacts, and other core apps are just flat out better in my opinion. (HTC Sense is nice, and works somewhat well, but I really don't actually 'use' the widgets much at all, and I had the exact same kinds of widgets for my cappy if i wanted them.)
2. The screen on the captivate is most definitely better, and could also lead to better battery life.
As for "radio performance," I travel a lot in PA, DE, MD, DC, and VA... And I haven't noticed any better radio performance or specifically; no real speed increases from my captivate (with Cognition from back around january, haha). Amazingly, I'm trying out different radios now, because my inspire performs worse with the new ATT OTA - 06.06.30_M radio (much higher ping = 500ms to 1,500ms) and about the same speeds most of the time. Sometimes I get nice upload or download speeds, but it's so random at the moment I just want more consistent low ping for noticably better web page loading, syncing, etc. I don't often download MB's of data unless I'm getting a new app or downloading a podcast (which I can wait a few more seconds for, seriously).
In the end, it boils down to personal preference. I was able to explain my GPS and back button issues to AT&T in order to get upgrade eligability, so it made sense (ended up selling the Captivate to someone via craigslist). If you plan on paying more than the usual <$100 for the Inspire, I would stick with your captivate for the contract period.

I guess the screen battery drain would suck If I needed this as a phone. I use mine as a toy. Internet, games, Texting, Facebook...I may have made a call/received one on it 3 weeks ago. Not sure its been so long. lol At work I have a direct ext. and at home I have a landline. So yeah. Heh
AT&T is going to release a dual core htc phone sometimes in the future from what i heard, HTC Holiday, if u can wait, why not save a few bucks, although Inspire 4g is a sick phone, and there are many great rom you can flash.
good luck !
I've been thinking about getting an Inspire also. I've never owned any touchscreen phone in the past, so I've been doing quite a bit of reading about them lately. From reading the inspire forums everyone that owns one seems to really like it. Is there another phone for att even being considered as the best? I looked at the Infuse, but seems like most folks don't really like the sammy ui's and its gigantic. I also read that the battery life was pretty bad. When you guys say the battery life is disappointing on the Inspire with stock roms, how bad is it? Can I expect to get 12-15 hours out of it just with normal usage (few phone calls, some texting, light browsing)? Some of the posts I read here make it sound as if I should only expect 8 hours or so stock.

Some of the posts I read here make it sound as if I should only expect 8 hours or so stock.

the infuse is quite lightweight, and the screen is nice, its not a bad phone, why not get one and if you dont like it, return it within 2 weeks or switch to inspire, i think you have 2 weeks
and the best way to fix a battery issue is buying an other charger
I'm considering trying to get the phone used, and avoid re-contracting with att. If I end up going that route then I cant test drive any phones. I do like the front facing camera and was originally attracted to it because of that. However it is quite a bit more expensive atm. I'm looking for the best value for money and so far the inspire fits, just a bit worried about the battery life.
then you are gonna love the inspire for the money you spend, in my own opinion.
honestly i feel that the battery is not as good as it can be, but i still get about 14 hours out of it and i use my phone ALOT!

Well I guess if im unhappy with stock battery performance I can rely on flashing to get me what I need. I can live with 14 hours, and I'm not really a "power user" so I may bet able to get a bit more out of it.
I like the Sensation because of its price, battery life, and its ICS ETA
But not sure if today it's the smartest choice when I can afford better CPU and RAM.
Few stuff concerns me...
1. How noticeable is the difference between 768mb/1.2ghz and 1gb/1.5ghz (Amaze/Galaxy S2 T-Mobile) ?
2. Whats about the difference between Sensation's "4G" card and Amaze/G2S's newer cards (42mbps) ?
3. Are there any known issues/bugs with the Sensation 4G right now?
Many thanks!
you have waited this long, might as well wait out a couple of more months and get the new htc one s.
Actually I'm looking for a new phone because mine bricked today, so I don't have time to wait.
i think at this time it would be better off to buy at craiglist unless u want to start a new contract. As info about htc sensation, I think it's a pretty decent phone, but like all android phone you need root to unlock the full potential.
Thanks for the fast replies !
I'm not concern about my contract or future phones on different carriers, my phone died and I really like to get a decent one on T-Mobile today (Monday).
I couldn't find any nice phone on craigslist, or in a reasonable price (usually not less than 80% of tmobile full price).
My dilemma is Sensation 4G (1.2ghz\768mb\14mbps) vs. Amaze\GS2 (1.5ghz\1gb\42mbps)
I'm not sure if those specs are just nicer on the chart or I can really feel the difference in daily use.
And the bottom line is the price tag, if it doesn't worth that, I don't want to pay more for that...
Sensation has a great community n dose the s2 the amaze is only in us also depends if ur rooting as at default the sensation is ment to run at 1.5ghz HTC underclocked it we have nice kernal to give the extra power
xxx best things come to those who wait xxx
thanks,
on stock configurations, are the amaze\sg2 noticeably faster ?
Get it right now. What are youwaitingfor lol

Bear in mind that the 42 vs 14.4 are Max possible speeds, not necessarily what u will actually get. That's influenced more by the towers capabilities and network load around you. I'd get the amaze, its newer, has the better radio in case ur area has the high speed towers, and it has nfc which seems to be coming around now. I'm currently trolling Craigslist for an amaze, but people around here want a lot of cash for them.

agreed go with the amaze. it seem like everyone wants top dollar for their amazea
!!senseless sensation!!
Get a new HTC One series device!!!!!!!!!!!
For instance the One S. S4-Krait. It'll outperform every other device with a dual-core and sometimes Tegra 3 devices.
With that device, you are safe for about ~2 years.
Honestly I have to say Sensation, just because of the hardcore dev support... We already got a One X ROM (Virtuous S4X) and a tonload more awesome ICS ROMs, so why not? The Amaze is slightly more powerful but you won't see the same great dev support as the Amaze. More dev support stops me from getting jealous when a new phone is out (hence why I got the Sensation, the MT4G dev community is really slowing down). As for the GSII.. Eh. Not too sure about it. I honestly dislike the T-Mobile variant of the GSII because of the hardware differences and the screwed up screen. The T-Mobile Sensation is the exact same as the international, aside from the radios and T-Mobile logo.
I just left the gs2 to come back to the sensation. The gs2 is great in terms of battery and reception. Only reason I went back is because of the dev support for this phone. All the roms for the gs2 T-Mobile are the same all stock based touchwiz roms
