[Q] Is the Screen Curved? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was looking at the Nexus S at Bestbuy and I was wondering...with the curve... is the screen itself flat or does screen also have a curve?

Just glass not screen.

the case and the protective glass are curved
the SAMOLED display is flat
that's why you should expect to have some touch sensitive UNresponses near the bottom of the most curved part

this is the most frustrating part of this damn phone. I don't see the benefit of the curved screen. non curved screens have worked fine on every other phone....all it does is affect the touch screen.

Are you sure that the SAMOLED is flat? My understanding of SAMOLED screens is that there is no glass between the screen and the touch surface as there is in most typical touchscreen devices (Wikipedia confirms and the Engadget review directly states "Curved Super AMOLED") Looking at the screen from the side, I can see my background curving and I cannot reproduce the "UNresponses" on either the top or the bottom of my device or my wife's.
Wikipedia said:
Super Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode or Super AMOLED is a display technology for use in mobile devices such as mobile phones. It differs from many other display technologies in that the layer which detects touch is integrated into the screen rather than being overlaid on top.

I'm not an expert, but I'd venture a guess that given that information saying the entire screen is curved is a safe bet.

Flat one is a screen, curved one is touch sensitive glass.

I think the curved screen looks GREAT, and gives the phone a distinctive look that no other phone in its class has.
There's certainly one small advantage to the curved screen...if you drop the phone or lay it on a table face down, the bulk of the screen cannot touch the surface and get marred. On the other hand, I suspect someone will say that it's worse for that because the impact on a drop is placed in a smaller area and increases risk of shatter. I'm not a glass engineer, so I don't really know if that's true or not, but it would make sense.

if you use s strong flash light you can see the difference
or if you take the phone apart, or you can simply refer to artukas613 picture

I just used my LED flashlight and I couldn't see it. Also, I can't find where that picture was from and I'm always weary of sources I can't check.
I found this: http://http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/samsung-super-amoled-explained-in-pretty-moving-pictures-video/ which states that:
t's thinner since the touch sensors are now integrated into the display

And this: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-S-Teardown/4365/1 but it has no side view pictures of the screen but from what I can tell, it looks super thin which goes against the other posted pictures.
As I said before, all of this to me indicates that the entire screen is curved as I cannot reproduce any touch "UNresponses", I still maintain I can see my background curve, everything I've read indicates that a SAMOLED is a SAMOLED because the touch sensor is built into the screen and not on top of it, and I can''t see a difference with a powerful flashlight.

I see, I did not see a second page. I was wrong.
Not really sure why allgamer had to "do my home work for me" with lmgtfy as I posted the link to the website, I just didn't see the second page. It would have wasted a lot less of your time if you had just said "Look on the second page" as demo23019. I don't generally care about teardowns so I have never looked at one before.
And actually, skepticism is what holds the world together. If people hadn't questioned what was beyond the horizon we wouldn't have ever left Africa. What you said clashed with what I understood so I explained why it didn't make sense and posted where my knowledge came from. If you can't handle someone questioning something that doesn't make sense to them in an adult manner, that is your own failing, not mine.

woops wrong thread...ignore

Screen Protector

For those of you who already have their Touch Cruise, I'd be interested to hear about how the screen protector sits on the screen. The pictures seem to show a flush face, which might make the screen protector look a bit odd and also come off much easier.
I have also seen some posts indicating the screen itself if a little different than the traditional touch screens to support the touchflo interface. Does that have any effect on the screen protector?
Thanks!

The screen protector is not the regular rectangular shape so it is not odd! It is cut to fit the contours of the whole front, minus the silver buttons area. Has cutouts for the camera and the earpiece area. You wont notice it is there if you allign it well. Make sure you sprinkle some water on the protector adhesive surface, and the device screen itself (careful here!) so that you can adjust the position, and then "scrape"out the excess water. Any trapped droplet will evaporate with time
1) Does the screen protector come with the package?
2) Now that your screen protector is flushed with the device surface, do you think it will come off from the edges if you were to slide it in and out of your pocket (or leather pouch)? Coz I have this Sony T-100 cam with a flushed screen surface and boy.. the protector came off very badly as I slide it in and out of the pouch.
Thanks!

Well david, the screen protector fits almost perfect over the full surface screen area of the phone. You will not even be able to realize it,but for sure you'll find an only small problem, just around the lens of the camera.....take a view of it.

Even if you try your best to fit it better than i did, you will never get the circle of the stick with the circle of the cam. I don't think is a real problem.

Screen protector

Hello All,
Can anyone suggest where can we get screen protectors for HTC touch cruise. I mean the protecter should cover not only the display but also the camera and notifications led's???
You should have 1 or 2 in the box. And you don't want it to cover the camera. The picture/video quality would be poor.

I had only one in the box and when i am trying to apply it, it didnt go of well. So, I want to remove it and apply a new one. Screen protector i am having which came in the HTC box, leaves holes for camera and notification led. Why we need to cover entire display is when we use the touch cube functioanility often ur fingers slips and it leaves finger spots there....
In the german forum they discuss about the same problem... nearly everybody is waiting for screen protectors from "BRANDO" They don't cover only the screen.

I second that! I have had BRANDO protectors on nearly all my PDAs and they NEVER got scratched on the screen or anything. The protectors are not cheap but worth it!
Brando replied to me they are going to ship the Cruise protectors within 2 weeks. So let's wait and see.
I'm in the same condition... I'm waiting Brando screen protector, it's the best!
I never owned a ppc before... For my TC is nothing too expensive Only the best.
a piece of plastic a small distant from the lense would work as
the evil opposite of another lense killing focus
if you didnt apply it ok then redo it, i took mine out like 3 times untill i installed it correctly, i washed it with soap to clear dust and stuff and re-applied, worked like a charm
I bought a protector from Veripart together with the Polaris. It has a cutout for the speaker on the top but not one for the camera, but it is so clear that it does not interfere with the camera (not visibly anyhow). I tried a photo before applying the protector and after under the same circumstances and I did not find any differences. Besides that it makes the lens easier to clean because it is now flush with the rest of the screen. I like it very much. I never use the supplied protectors with my phones. If you ever tried a Brando or a Veripart then you will know why ;-) . The protector covers the whole of the front of the phone, right until the edges of the device.

FYI, these do not cover the entire faceplate of the Polaris. They are just standard protectors (and not very good ones at that) sized to the touch screen.

I've been using the protector that came with the phone and I find that unless I keep it clean, the touch experience is not so great. Sometimes hard to get a smooth swipe. The glass on the screen however works well even when smudged. Is there a protector out there that works better? If not, I'm going bareback.

Screen protectors should fit better and not curl up on the edges.
How's the screen look, resolution, viewing angle, colors?
Any difference in how responsive it is?

Awesome device, no problems to speak of really. I looked for the curved glass as soon as it was out if the box in-store. Thought that it was just my perception and that the "curve" must've been a very slight one.

It's been reported that some screen protectors curl up on the edges of the curved glass models. This one shouldn't have that problem which is a good thing.

How do we find out if we have curved glass? Only thing I can feel (can't see) is a slight curve up at the very top where the glass meets the ear speaker area.

Not sure if you are responding to my post, but to clarify, I am aware he doesn't have a permanent screen protector on there in those pics. It's just the temporary one that ships with the phone.
I was just saying that proper screen protectors can be installed that go all the way to the edge of the glass and not curl up on this flat screen, unlike the curved screen model. There have been several posts in other threads about this issue.

Right now, there are three types of glass out there.
1) Flat glass cut to the size of the screen. Since the edges of the screen are rounded, the edges of the glass don't adhere. This produces what people call a "halo" effect, because the part of the glass not sticking will appear white, creating a white ring around the outside of your screen.
2) Flat glass cut to fit only on the flat part of the screen. It stops before it reaches the curvature of the screen, and therefore doesn't extend to the edges. In my opinion, it looks bad, I'd be constantly scraping my finger along the edge, and it's not even protecting my entire front of my phone, so what's the point?
3) Curved glass cut to fit the entire front of the phone, edge-to-edge. There aren't many of these out there and reviews are really just trickling in. I started a thread for discussion of them, but no content as of yet. I'm hoping that the glass makers will wise up and go this way.
So 2.5d means it should cover the whole screen edge to edge? Haven't managed to find any like this yet

2.5d means that the edge of the screen protector has a curve to it. This makes the glass screen protector less prone to nicks and cracking.

I think it's how its applied. I bought a pair, I forgot what brand but I bought one for my girl and 2 came in the package. I put hers on first and there's the halo around the edges, but I put mine on and there's none to be seen.

Wide curves eat too screen elements?

I've watched several videos and I've noticed that the screen curves are too wide, at the point that in some apps, if the text are too close to the right or left, they are displayed in the curve and it gets hard to read.
Do you have the same concern?

In S10+ is way more subtle. Look at it in the right, the screen elements are well adjusted.
Meh I like the curved edges personally
That looks bad ?
Wish op7 would be available in USA
I think its accentuated in that photo due to the glare from the lighting. If you look at the bottom half of both screens it doesn't look that bad.
Yep I'm disappointed they went with a curved screen.

has anyone used both devices (OP7 Pro, S10+)?
How do the edges compare? Ist the curved thing stronger/more on the OP7 than on the S10+? I don't like these edges on my S10+ but if they are not more curved I probably would go for the OP7

I personally dislike curved edges and am having the same issue. If I can't stand the 7 Pro, I'll likely get the Zenfone 6. The S10+ was annoying in that aspect, if the 7 Pro is the same then it'll be a no no for me.

I think curved screens are more annoying than gaps, which is the only reason I can't decide whether to buy a 7pro.

Same here. I had galaxy s6 edge and thanks but no thank you never again. Flat screen only and front finger print scanner.
I happen to like curved screens. But I think everyone obsesses over this too much.

I haven't even noticed the curve...it's the same as my s8+...no glare or anything like the picture...
^good to Know!
Came from s9+ tbh I thought I would hate the curve but with cases it never really bothered me, without cases always would accidentally touch things in the bottom right. To me the op7p curve is less deep, but it doesn't seem to start curving earlier than the s9+. On either phone I've never noticed any distortion, can say if youre not looking at the screen head in the text wrapping around the side looks weird but it's not a noticeable thing in day to day use.
One complaint is it means there is no good glass screen protectors, got one just to see if the game was any better than the s9+ but its not, and they kinda mess with the fingerprint sensor anyway.

Probably best to keep that included protector on

True, t-mobile variants don't come with it unfortunately, so I'm stuck looking for a good third party protector.
Any of you t-mobile folks out there I'd advise strongly against the $40 protector they offer for you, is not good.

I've watched several videos and I've noticed that the screen curves are too wide, at the point that in some apps, if the text are too close to the right or left, they are displayed in the curve and it gets hard to read.
Do you have the same concern?

Keep in mind there is usually a ton of studio lighting around these things as YouTubers film the videos. I don't think it will be as pronounced as you see in that picture.

I has the s10+ and now have the oneplus pro 7 and one thing that was very noticeable was how much less I accidently pressed the screen on the 7. The s10+ has a more aggressive curve which for me makes it easy to for accidental touches. It also warps anything like text near the edge of the screen. The 7 pro does this much less.
