[Q] HTC Magic Vodafone UK - Upgrade Help - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I've tried several searches to see a thread exists (couldn't see one), apologies if there is one...
I have a HTC Magic (Vodafone UK) it is currently running 1.5 as shipped (see details below).

I've never received any OTA updates, however I'd like to upgrade to 2.2.1! So I'd appreciate advice on the best route to re-enabling OTA updates/Manual upgrades etc...
Thanks in advance
Salvo

For rooting the device I'd suggest looking at the cyanogenmod wiki.http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Magic
I'd stick to CM6.0/CM6.1, Amon Ra 1.7.0 and all the updates mentioned in the wiki. I would not recommend using the 2708+ versions on a Magic when you are starting. However, on a magic the cyanogenmod will probably feel bloated. If you have rooted your device it will however be easy to switch to any other ROM.
The Ezterry and Firerat version of Gingerbread for the Magic are however still in development. I would suggest gaining experience with CM6 before trying Ezterry's or Firerat's ROM's. Perhaps those ROM's will be ready by the time you know how to use them.
(Gingerbread feels really nice and fast. However since the data connection did not work on my Magic PVT 32B I needed to downgrade again.)
I still use good old Amon Ra 1.7.0 for bootloader, also found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
But the CM-wiki already contains all the information and links you need.

To root or not to root (that’s the question)…

Dear forum members, I’ve been using the HTC Magic for a few weeks now and I must say much to my satisfaction. The device is so much more responsive and compared to Windows Mobile, it is very fast.
When browsing the Android marketplace I found out that many apps need the device to be rooted.
My question is apart from the apps benefit whether or not to ROOT the device.
What more advantages does rooting offer? Does one really need it?
Thank you for helping me make up my mind!!
new to magic as well, coming from windows mobile, here are the advantages of rooting (for me atleast)
1. bluetooth file transfers - rec and send
2. wifi / bluetooth tether (tho i think there are some paid apps that allow non root users to do this now)
3. upgrades for restricted roms. for eg, my australian htc magic did not allow me to upgrade to google maps 3.1.1. but after rooting, no probs =)
Where can I find the steps to root my tmobile my touch? AKA htc magic.
I'm desperately seeking a forum with the steps to root the my touch (htc magic). Just got it in today and I cant find anything on rooting this phone. Where did you get the info on rooting your Australian magic? Any help is much appreciated!

Not possible to root, so no ROM flashing or installing apps that need Root.

I followed instructions on http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting,
however, the recovery rom won't boot on my machine. it stuck on the first HTC screen. (Upto step 11)
then i tried using recovery rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492, boots ok, so I made a backup (lucky I did that),
and throw in the update.zip from Magic Tutorial, reboot,
still no sucess, machine stuck on the first HTC screen again.
So I used the recovery rom by Amon_RA's to restore my machine.
Did I do anything wrong?
My adb was installed correctly, no problem running adb devices.
BTW, I've also tried method 2, it was sucessful, but killed wifi, so i restored again.
Try this guide worked perfect for me first time and since on both my Magics.

Haykuro's ROM doesn't work on 32A boards. You can try daldroid's, Amon_RA's or the HOFO ROM. These are the non-Hero ROMs.

Updated: I`ve rooted my Magic following this installation guide: http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/08/how-to-root-your-htc-magic/
daldroid-htcmagic1-signed
daldroid-recovery
I`m not sure if daldroid and nandroid ROMs matters here?
Strange, some of the programs requiring root acces (Like Power Manager) are not working and again asking for root... but others are working properly..
I`ve read all the articles related to the SPL, HTC Hero ROMs etc., but didn`t find specific answer to my in mind question and confirmation if i understand it correctly, so here i am with the specific questions:
According the the above specification of my phone i assume i need first to install this SPL:
Engineering SPL HBOOT-1.33.2005 Signed update.zip (This is the same one as the Haykuro SPL). from this tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019
- HBOOT-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H : CPLD-12 (Greek)
I`m planning to follow this WiKi guide for the SPL:
1.
Flashing new SPL's and Radios
Push the update.zip file to your SD card or mount the SD card and drag and drop it in your OS:
adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
When you are done pushing it. Start the phone in the recovery mode by turning it off and then start it by hold home+end.
Then in recovery mode scroll down and press apply:update.zip, wait until it has finished and then reboot.
Once i successfully flash the SPL i guess i just need to choose the Hero ROM and then flash it?
For example this guide: http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/21/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-magic-including-hero-roms/
I really need you guys to confirm what i`m planning so far or to correct me if i misunderstand something.
I`m really trying hard to read all the articles and to understand what i`m facing and your help will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Post your question in the Sapphire general forum. This is the Sapphire android development forum, you aren't trying to develop anything...
Can I throw something out there that's not entirely unrelated to the above post, in the hope the board mods are watching?
I can see both arguments from those in this thread - the OP is asking a question about how to make use of the development that goes on here, whereas Cheesebaron is taking the purist approach. Two to three weeks ago, I was at the same knowledge level as the OP and posted a similarly dumb query on here. A few weeks on I'm merrily contributing by fixing Exchange compatibility on Jerpela's builds. So I would say to those hardcore purists on here, don't scare off the noobs - you don't know what they'll eventually evolve into.
Now speaking personally, looking back to a few weeks ago, I would never even have dreamed of looking on the general board for answers on how to implement the things found on the development board. "General", to my mind, seems to suggest things more like "where can I get a nice case for my Magic?".
The answer? The Dream guys have a Q&A board which is clearly designed for the sort of post that started this thread. We don't. We need one.
Nobody willing to confirm or correct me?
Well looks like i have to brick my phone first and then ask any kind of questions... and maybe... someone like "Cheesebaron" will kick me again `cause it`s not in the right forum...
Thanks anyway...
Here you go.
Get your SPL Here
And this is the guide I like to fallow. It's for the Rogers magic but it should work for you just fine, just make sure you use a ROM for a 32A board.

Thanks man...
I gues i need this SPL: Engineering SPL HBOOT-1.33.2005 Signed update.zip
`Couse i`ve already saw a guy with the same Board and Radio bricking his phone using this one: Modded HBOOT-1.33.2004 by Crios Signed update.zip
Here's what I did.
I followed this recipe found at http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1545226
Then used this ROM instead of the suggested fatal1ty one. http://www.4shared.com/file/118776501/c759bba3/myhero-008.html
I have the exact same board as you.
I have no problems whatsoever, and the ROM seems the fastest and most stable I have tried. No overclocking needed.

Can you tell me which ROM is that and a link to the thread of discussion? I`ll be happy to read all about it.
Thanks
32B Radio
Im finding that with my 32B magic that I keep losing the network signal and it doesnt automatically re-connect to the network when the signal comes available again, I have to select airplane mode and then turn airplane mode off.
I think at some point I may have flashed my radio but in all honesty Ive lost all track of what ive flashed
currently im using
62.50s.20.17h_2.22.19.26I
and NK02s latest ION rom
Is anyone else having this prob or know where I can get a download of the 32B radio?

Help please! - Voda Magic 32B

Hi I am a total noob and have been reading through loads and loads of pages on here and am getting a bit confused - please can someone help?
here are the details of my phone:
HBOOT-1.33.0007 (SAPP10000) : PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10
I have read that this may be a perfect SPL but am I right in thinking that the 'one click' method from unlockr can get round this? do I just need to root follwing that method with the amon recovery or do I still need to change SPL? if so do I do this by following the goldcard method on here?
is that all necessary if all I want to do is flash a new ROM or do I just root and upload the ROM? (preferably cyanongen's latest offering or one of the many Hero ROM's that are floating about) I am still trying to get my head around this all, what I really want is to load the new ROM and use Loccy's betterbrowser.
If someone could explain in more detail, that would be great - not each process as I have the tutorials but just what stages I need to go through (for example - root using one click method...)
These are some of the things I have been looking at:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKPsClQiFVQ
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
any pointers to other tutorials I may need to look at would be also appreciated
Cheers Marty

HTC Magic 32A Rom CyahogenMod install problem "cm-6.1.0-RC1-DS"

Very good morning,
I have a Magic HTC 32A.
The fact is that trying to install the latest ROM CyahogenMod the "cm-6.1.0-RC1-DS", it gives me error. And I passed the first splash, restarting continuously.
I have access to recovery, fasboot.
I would like to install this rom, or at least to anyone else.
Ayduda please!
Clarify details of the Magic:
32A SHIP SAPPHIRE PVT H S-0N

CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.10.18

RA-hero-Recovery v.1.6.2
If someone clarify how to proceed, I would be infinitely grateful.

You have to change the radio. It has to be the old radio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
This should have been posted in General... unless of course you developed the rom. Or better yet... you should post your question in the thread where you downloaded the rom. Yeah... that would be a good place.
Thread closed.

HTC Desire HD - Cynagen & ICS (lord's) - how to UN-root once updated

Hi all,
First off, thank you for the absolute quality of the Ice Cold Sandwich ROM, it's working brilliantly for me!
I have tried to search but not found an answer. Now that my DHD has been rooted to run the upgrade, this was done originally with Visionary+ and then the additional bootloader (CM) so i could then backup my handset, install a new Kernel and get it to the current stage. In the bootloader I see:
ACE PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (PD9810000)
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 11 2010, 12:44:14
I have terminal on my handset and if i type in su, it returns the hash as expected. I did a: find /-name superuser.* to see whether the superuser.apk was present, alas it isn't.
For a variety of reasons I need to un-root it but keep ICS on. Can this be done? If not, then that's fine but I really would prefer to keep ICS.
thanks in advance,
Jonathan
As I understand it, I need to flash a new HBOOT, but, before I do this (not wanting to undo/brick the handset) can I use, with what tool i am not sure (have looked at so many the last few days) the hboot....hb0 file included in the 'downgrade' 1.32 PD98IMG.zip?
cheers,
JT
Am I being that much of a dumba**?!
Do I have to revert back to a stock rom?
I know these are noob questions .....
