HTC Desire HD - Cynagen & ICS (lord's) - how to UN-root once updated - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
First off, thank you for the absolute quality of the Ice Cold Sandwich ROM, it's working brilliantly for me!
I have tried to search but not found an answer. Now that my DHD has been rooted to run the upgrade, this was done originally with Visionary+ and then the additional bootloader (CM) so i could then backup my handset, install a new Kernel and get it to the current stage. In the bootloader I see:
ACE PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (PD9810000)
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 11 2010, 12:44:14
I have terminal on my handset and if i type in su, it returns the hash as expected. I did a: find /-name superuser.* to see whether the superuser.apk was present, alas it isn't.
For a variety of reasons I need to un-root it but keep ICS on. Can this be done? If not, then that's fine but I really would prefer to keep ICS.
thanks in advance,
Jonathan

As I understand it, I need to flash a new HBOOT, but, before I do this (not wanting to undo/brick the handset) can I use, with what tool i am not sure (have looked at so many the last few days) the hboot....hb0 file included in the 'downgrade' 1.32 PD98IMG.zip?
cheers,
JT

Am I being that much of a dumba**?!
Do I have to revert back to a stock rom?
I know these are noob questions .....

To root or not to root (that’s the question)…

Dear forum members, I’ve been using the HTC Magic for a few weeks now and I must say much to my satisfaction. The device is so much more responsive and compared to Windows Mobile, it is very fast.
When browsing the Android marketplace I found out that many apps need the device to be rooted.
My question is apart from the apps benefit whether or not to ROOT the device.
What more advantages does rooting offer? Does one really need it?
Thank you for helping me make up my mind!!
new to magic as well, coming from windows mobile, here are the advantages of rooting (for me atleast)
1. bluetooth file transfers - rec and send
2. wifi / bluetooth tether (tho i think there are some paid apps that allow non root users to do this now)
3. upgrades for restricted roms. for eg, my australian htc magic did not allow me to upgrade to google maps 3.1.1. but after rooting, no probs =)
Where can I find the steps to root my tmobile my touch? AKA htc magic.
I'm desperately seeking a forum with the steps to root the my touch (htc magic). Just got it in today and I cant find anything on rooting this phone. Where did you get the info on rooting your Australian magic? Any help is much appreciated!

Not possible to root, so no ROM flashing or installing apps that need Root.

I followed instructions on http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting,
however, the recovery rom won't boot on my machine. it stuck on the first HTC screen. (Upto step 11)
then i tried using recovery rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492, boots ok, so I made a backup (lucky I did that),
and throw in the update.zip from Magic Tutorial, reboot,
still no sucess, machine stuck on the first HTC screen again.
So I used the recovery rom by Amon_RA's to restore my machine.
Did I do anything wrong?
My adb was installed correctly, no problem running adb devices.
BTW, I've also tried method 2, it was sucessful, but killed wifi, so i restored again.
Try this guide worked perfect for me first time and since on both my Magics.

Haykuro's ROM doesn't work on 32A boards. You can try daldroid's, Amon_RA's or the HOFO ROM. These are the non-Hero ROMs.

[Q] Unrootable Desire S? [Solved]

Hi this is my first post after rooting my girlfriends htc Wildfire S successfully using the guides on here which were very good.
After how good her phone came out I have tried to do the same with my desire s but this is the story so far,
XTC clip used so its s-off but after trying to use 4ext recovery needed it rooted,
Superoneclick didn't work just Hangs on step 7 and the same with gingerbreak.
Then I used htcdev to unlock the bootloader as i thought this would be the prob as no one seems to have experienced this prob but its still the same.
I cant get a rooted rom as I have no custom recovery, unlike the wildfire s it seems to be all play store based and wants root permissions.

I gotta have missed something as I couldn't find a similar thread although if I have I apologise in advance, but are there any ideas on this one?
I'm going to try gingerbreak 1.20 one more time but any suggestions?
Cheers
Having S-OFF you should have flashed PG88IMG.zip with custom recovery and engineering bootloader, and do whatever you want from there. For example, just flashing Superuser update.zip.
You went seriously wrong and made a mess.
To solve it properly, you'll need to reinstall RUU and lock the bootloader back to arrive back to the point where you went wrong.
P.S. Questions belong in Q&A, which is - Questions & Answers. Kinda obvious, no?

[Q] Updating to ICS, restoring Recovery

Hi guys,
When revolutionary came out I was one of the first adopters, mainly because I loathe Vodafone's crapware they forcefully feed you with your new phones.
Now I've been happy ever since, but I want to update to the latest OTA.. or at least, be capable to do so.
I've tried Recovery Manager, however, none of the available recoveries on there work (Rebooting in recovery gives black screen, phone icon with a red exclamation mark).. so i reverted back to the backed up CWM recovery Revolutionary installed.
Obviously, the recovery I have now is not capable of applying (f)ota updates, thus limiting me in my ways to get my updates done, without potentially fubaring my phone.
The information I can find:
Android version: 2.3.4
Sense version: 3.0
Software number: 1.50.162.2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.13-g1e13373
Baseband: 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M
-----------------
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111
RADIO-10.14.9035.01_M
eMMC-boot
Now I've read around, and all it comes down to is finding either the right RUU, and stripping off the proper recovery; or finding a compatible recovery, so that it'll allow me to patch the fota update.
I'm also fully aware that there's much to find on the forum, however, I can't seem to make heads nor tails from the information I managed to gather there (dozens upon dozens of posts, some vague, some contradictory to eachother.. gets confusing -very- fast)
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I do not understand why you want to go the HTC way,
Your phone is beautifully setup with revolutionary, and you are on GB.
Follow THIS THREAD and you will be set up for any ICS ROM out there.
All ICS ROMS contain everything you would get from HTC ,PLUS some extras.
Go the simple way,and save yourself a whole heap of grief .
In order to up grade to ics rom's the only thing you need to do is upgrade your firmware thats compatible with ics one that is done you Will be able to flash a ics Rom

[Q] [Desire S] Revolutionary, S-OFF, need to update

Hey all. I posted this in the wrong forum by accident, so reposting here. Also, this may have been asked before but I did a search and couldn't find a thread quite like it!
I am currently running Android 2.3.3 and HTC Sense 2.1 on my HTC Desire S. I have used the Revolutionary method to S-OFF and root the phone, which allowed me to uninstall branded bloatware and add some interesting apps.
I have not been able to update the phone as quite frankly I have no idea what I'm doing, and the OTA update will brick the phone. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to get the latest version of Android and HTC Sense?
I'm in the UK on the Three network. After doing an extensive search for the specific RUU matching that, I can't seem to find it unfortunately.
Many thanks for your time.
I'd suggest you just flash a custom sense rom from dev section, which is very easy to do. and a lot of those are better than the HTC ICS rom
If you really want to go back to stock HTC, follow this video guide, check video description for links
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X71RtQQjbqk
You can find 3 branded RUU here, at the bottom of the list
http://www.shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Saga
Ahhh thanks so much for that list! There was a forum post I found with details on how to unroot, but all the links to the RUUs were dead. Does it matter which RUU I use so long as it's meant for the UK? I can't seem to find the one for Three network, unless it's under "H3G_UK"...

Is your phone branded? If not, just use the Europe ruu

Well it has a Three network splash screen and sadly it's still locked to the network, but other than that I don't think so

Yes that's the one
I'm very sorry to have to bump this, but I followed the instructions that I was given and ended up with the infamous Error [140].
While fastbooting, I now have:

HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO-38.03.02.14_M
eMMC-boot

And when I try to use the OTA update, it goes straight into this Fastboot screen. I literally have no idea what's going on now.

you must install the original RUU, which will remove all your data and install original ROM Android 2.3.3, recovery, hboot and radio
i suggest RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed-ORIGINAL.exe from here http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?developer=Saga
or you can put this zip on your sd card, and install it from bootloader: http://dfiles.eu/files/bh4avk6uz (easier method)
Thank you for your link and RUU file. I tried running the Europe RUU.exe, but came up with "Error 131: Customer ID error". Still the same information in the bootloader as before though.
Sorry to bump this again, does anyone have a fix?
Or would it be easier to root and s-off once more then flash a rom that was similar to stock?

[Q] Haven't flashed in months, could use some refresher/pointers?

So my Evita that I rooted/flashed back in October is finally starting to bug out. Six months of smooth sailing, but now it's having Wi-Fi problems, reboot problems, etc. I'm going to go ahead and use it as an opportunity to flash to something newer, but...perhaps someone might be able to tell me what would cause this kind of behaviour? Is it something that could be fixed without reflashing? Something I should just expect over time when I'm using custom ROMs?
Anyways, I have been re-reading up on this stuff to prepare to reflash. Again, I did root/s-off/flash back in October...at that time the Sense 5 ROMs were very early/rough, so I went Sense 4 (CleanROM 6.5). My current bootloader screen reads like this:

*** UNLOCKED ***

Currently installed recovery is TWRP 2.6.3.0
So with all of that said, my goal now is to get as updated as possible, and flash a stable Sense 5 ROM.
Would anyone mind helping me figure out the right plan of attack to do this?

The only thing you need to do to prepare for a Sense 5 ROM is to upgrade your firmware, I have detailed instructions on my How-To Guide For Beginners thread in my signature. Don't ask for a recommendation on a ROM because doing so isn't allowed. To say one ROM is better is to infer that the others are inferior in some way. This is disrespectful to the devs who spend their spare time bringing us these awesome ROMs free of charge. Each user has different tastes anyway, the best way to see which ROM suits you is to flash a few and find out for yourself.
Sent from my Evita
Oh absolutely...in fact you mentioned that to me months ago when I went through this the first time, so I most certainly wasn't looking for a ROM recommendation...just wanted to know what I'd have to do to get where I wanted to be, and in what order I should do it
timmaaa, I noticed you recently told someone who was getting an Evita together for his father that he should go with this firmware:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877490004040
Because it would allow him to go Sense OR AOSP.
I suppose there's a slight chance I'll want to mess with an AOSP ROM, so should I stick with the one you linked there, or perhaps this one?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2651052
The 2.15 firmware in my guide thread (and the first link in your post) is the one you want.
Sent from my Evita
Well I guess it really HAS been a long time since I've done this....the folder with fastboot and all of that is still on my PC, but the PC is NOT recognizing the phone at all. In fact, if I plug the phone to the PC via USB while in fastboot, the screen shows "FASTBOOT AC" rather than USB.
USB Debugging is ON. HTC Sync Manager is not seeing the phone either. How did my PC suddenly stop recognizing my phone? What can I do to troubleshoot this?
Eesh...just came down to using a different USB cable...so finicky!
Anyways, all's well...firmware updated, new ROM flashed!
Thanks!
