To root or not to root (that’s the question)… - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Dear forum members, I’ve been using the HTC Magic for a few weeks now and I must say much to my satisfaction. The device is so much more responsive and compared to Windows Mobile, it is very fast.
When browsing the Android marketplace I found out that many apps need the device to be rooted.
My question is apart from the apps benefit whether or not to ROOT the device.
What more advantages does rooting offer? Does one really need it?
Thank you for helping me make up my mind!!

new to magic as well, coming from windows mobile, here are the advantages of rooting (for me atleast)
1. bluetooth file transfers - rec and send
2. wifi / bluetooth tether (tho i think there are some paid apps that allow non root users to do this now)
3. upgrades for restricted roms. for eg, my australian htc magic did not allow me to upgrade to google maps 3.1.1. but after rooting, no probs =)

Where can I find the steps to root my tmobile my touch? AKA htc magic.
I'm desperately seeking a forum with the steps to root the my touch (htc magic). Just got it in today and I cant find anything on rooting this phone. Where did you get the info on rooting your Australian magic? Any help is much appreciated!

Not possible to root, so no ROM flashing or installing apps that need Root.

I followed instructions on http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting,
however, the recovery rom won't boot on my machine. it stuck on the first HTC screen. (Upto step 11)
then i tried using recovery rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492, boots ok, so I made a backup (lucky I did that),
and throw in the update.zip from Magic Tutorial, reboot,
still no sucess, machine stuck on the first HTC screen again.
So I used the recovery rom by Amon_RA's to restore my machine.
Did I do anything wrong?
My adb was installed correctly, no problem running adb devices.
BTW, I've also tried method 2, it was sucessful, but killed wifi, so i restored again.

Try this guide worked perfect for me first time and since on both my Magics.

Haykuro's ROM doesn't work on 32A boards. You can try daldroid's, Amon_RA's or the HOFO ROM. These are the non-Hero ROMs.

HTC Magic Voda UK ROOT ACCESS Howto

To those with HTC Magic on Vodafone UK, with SPL 1.33.2005.
***Quick note - if you have tried to do Haykuro's root access method and found out that the reboot command didnt work, then keep reading as you would have installed SPL 1.33.2005 at the beggining of his method!
if you want to check then turn off your HTC Magc, and boot up fastboot (back + power) then just look at the top and see what it says! it should read like this:
SAPPIRE PVT 32A (or 32B) ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
certain parts of the fastboot stuff wont be identical to mine but as long as it says the same as what is in bold and underlined above, then you'll be all good!***
I had the same issues as you with my magic, such as following all of the instructions by haykuro then when it came to #reboot all I got was a uid error.
What I did after was hard reboot my device, downloaded the GoogleION (revision 2) ROM (ion-signed.zip) and installed it, I now have root access!
I am not finding any trouble with this rom, bluetooth, wifi, gps and accelerometer are working great and as for the audio problems, I haven't noticed any. This build is wildly fast and no laggy keyboard, no waiting between closing huge sms threads or closing heavy apps, you can have voice search and amazon mp3 also super user whitelist is also preinstalled.
ROM DOWNLOAD HERE: http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/ion-signed.zip
Installation instructions for ION:
*Follow the same proceedure as before with haycuro's method then when the REBOOT command fails, hard reboot, (take out battery from phone to turn off then put it back in and turn device on)
*reconnect phone to your computer and transfer the ion-signed.zip to your sdcard, either by mounting the card to the pc via the phone or by adb push method, just make sure you rename it 'update.zip'
*Enter revovery mode (home + power)
*make a nandroid backup
*select wipe all data
*select update from sdcard
*let setup complete then hit home + power to restart into GoogleION R2.
It is required to wipe your phone else you will get a bad install or things won't work and that would be bad!
Make sure to copy your nandroid backup to your pc, and then to a disc or memory stick as you will need this if you botch up any future updates or if you want to return to Vodagroans crappy ROM.
PM me if you want more info, or preferably, email me at [email protected]
Emaling me would get a faster response as google mail comes straight to our phones! Hope this helps and enjoy GoogleION!

I Did haykuro's on my Vodafone HTC magic AUS not UK (but maybe the same?)
at the end of the rooting, the reboot command, and I just turned the phone off and on.
After that, I was able to get the root # using adb sheel, but thru the terminal, i always got $.
I read somewhere else thaty I needed to install another su binary, so i followed that precedure and now it's ok.

just curious
my vodafone magic (uk) went fine through the rooting experience - my phone is a 32b
then I read a post that said there is a different root image for the 32A and the 32B, the image for the 32A is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3972848&postcount=6
I wonder if this is the cause of the problem you mention
as its nice to be able to root and have the option of keeping the stock vodafone firmware
Hey,
i had problem rooting my Australian Vodafone magic too, but the problem is that the shell command could not find "reboot" command.
To fix this i have to manually create a symbolic link with reboot and than i could run the reboot.
is quite easy to fix if the you type "reboot" and an error appear saying unknow command.
just add the symbolic link to the same area as "sync" and it should work.
Cheers

Hi htcmagic, I actually have the same SAPL number and everything else is exactly the same as yours.
I got it from Vodafone UK. I was just going to post the same question here.
So, we both have a 32B model and SAPL 1.33.0004. Can anyone please recommend a good rooting guide for this phone? I am having a very hard time locating one.

Trying to downgrade to 1.5 and getting 'Model ID Incorrect'

Hi all
Using instructions from here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
To downgrade my Vodafone UK 32B Magic from 1.6 to 1.5 but after trying to HBOOT with the SAPPIMG.nbh provided, it gets so far then fails saying 'Model ID Incorrect'.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance

Yes I did. And just to be certain i've just done it again and I get the same error. It looks like it is doing it, then it says something like 'Checking signature' then the error comes up.
Do you put the sappimg.nbh in root of sdcard? Not in folder.
Yes, it finds the file. It is the only file on my SD card, not in a folder. It asks if I want to continue. Blue progress bar appears in the top right of the screen, it goes all the way (takes about 1-2 mins) then the message 'Model ID Incorrect' appears.
Man... try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
Hmmm. The reason I went to for http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod as a set of instructions is it was all on one page, looked fairly simple and it was recommended by someone with the same phone as me.
The other link looks complicated and I haven't got a clue what it does.
Maybe you need create a Goldcard, and the other link can help you make this.
I think. It´s a tip.
Anyone got any further on how to downgrade 1.6 to 1.5 on a Vodafone 32B Magic without using the Goldcard method?
I'm suffering the same problem, is this problem documented anywhere else and apart from the GoldCard method are there any other solutions?
Hey guys I'm new to this android hacking scene but I've finally managed to do it after doing near enough everything the wrong way lol
I am also using the vodafone 32b UK phone (well its my sisters really ) and I also used the same 'CyanogenMod' guide to do what I wanted (root/custom roms at last!)
Before i go any further though... are you all wanting to downgrade to simply install custom roms etc.. or is it for different reasons?
If its for different reasons then I have no idea on how to downgrade but for the other thing then I can probably help you out! I won't waste my time typing it out yet though if its not what is needed..
Hi, yes I want to downgrade so I can install custom ROMs.
I too had this problem with a Vodafone UK 32B Magic trying the "Downgrading from 1.6 TO 1.5 and Rooting for T-Mobile MT3G" method.
But when I tried the alternative "Non-TMobile 32B Magics" method at that link, in other words using the Android SDK & fastboot to boot the cm-recovery-1.4, that worked like a dream.
So I didn't need to go the goldcard route.
This is good news sandersw.
Where is the easiest step by step for the method you suggest?

Now is this or is this not a perfected SPL "1.33.0007" as I cant do jack with it nor can I get any computer to recognize it when it's in fastboot connected to a PC...*sigh* (although it will when it's turned on)
Now assuming the above is correct and it is a perfected spl will the below work:
Step 1
Flash the phone with the 32A ROM v2.53.707.2 (Engineerings SPL v1.33.2010) this being a higher rom version than my own from Amon_RA's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218)
Step 2
Change the radio (any recommendations?) back to that of a 32B HTC Magic device and install CyanogenMod using the info again from a different Amon_RA thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4314039&postcount=1)
Step 3
Sit back and bathe in the glory of my finally rooted HTC Magic?
Thanks in advance for any and all help even if it's just a quick reply to tell me I'm off my trolley and it's a sure fire way to brick my phone
Has anyone managed to get anywhere with this hardware. I have exactly the same version of hardware and have not been able to get it to connect to the pc in fastboot.
I would imagine that a lot of people are in the same position, with the same hardware so could someone point us in the right direction please.

Yes, 1.33.0007 is a perfected SPL, but nevertheless you should get fastboot to recognize your phone. Did you properly install the Android SDK USB drivers?

I had the same perfected SPL on my 32B but (luckily) with Android 1.5 CRC24.
I think it should work if you flash a "official" vodafone 1.5 CRC24 1.33.0007 image, then install flashrec on Android, change the recovery Image, boot into recovery mode and flash an engineering spl. Thats basically what I did, except for the downgrade to 1.5.
AFAIK on 1.33.0007 you should be able to downgrade without a goldcard.
Same Version
Hello everybody,
i have the same phone with the same SPL, too.
My Problem is when i try to flash the sappimg.zip with the POWER on and Volume down methode, everything wents fine.
But after reading the Update File i end up with an error like:
"Main Version is older".
Don't know what to do...
Phone HTC Sapphire (Magic) 32B Ship S-ON G

I already tryed a Goldcard, but no luck at all
Any Ideas.
I readed 2 Threads, they got a problem with theire devices,
it also was an 32B Magic and they wanted to do an update, too.
And they ended up with the same error message, so they tryed
to flash a 32A Image, and then the 32B, and it worked.
But i am worried, don't want to brick my device.
Anybody out there, with an idea?
Greeting

i got the exact same problem. waiting for answers...
If you are running Donut Rom DRC92 then at the moment you are stuck. We need to wait until a higher firmware with a non-perfected SPL is released. If you are running a Cupcake Rom (starts with a C) then you can upgrade fine. I'm in the same situation after bricking my first phone using a RUU (they are for 32As only). Luckily Vodafone replaced it under warranty but I have ended up with the perfected SPL.
After having root and now unable to get root I can't say I miss it much. It makes you think what do you need root for? One of the reasons was the ability to flash custom roms but no disrespect to all the Hero Rom developers but NONE of them run well on a 32B Magic. Cyanogens software is good but what does it do that stock firmware doesn't? Any way hopefully Eclair won't be long, a new Rom will be released and we can all change to an engineering SPL and all will be jolly again.
what's ur OS ? Can HTC sync read ur device ?
No HTC Sync doesn't recognize my phone

Thats the reason I want to use the 32A rom as it's newer then my current rom and so it *should* hopefully flash the phone including the spl and then I can change the radio back to that of a 32B device

You should be able to get both fastboot and adb to recognise your phone although you won't be able to do anything. That sounds like a driver issue. If you go to the HTC website and download the latest drivers (pick the ones for the HTC branded magic) you should be ok. Try the link below.
http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=267&act=sd&cat=all
As for flashing a 32a rom then changing the radio, good luck with that after already bricking one phone I haven't got the balls to try. If you do try and it works please post here exactly what you done as many people will thank you.
Lastly what I'm waiting for is a higher rom version which will probably be eclair (Android 2.0) which comes with a non-perfected SPL. Then the devs on here can get the relentless rooter to work on our phones.

u cant access it unless u enable USB debugging. If u cant pass activation, then ur screwed until u activate it with 3G
hacker1 suggested this:
Okay I post this as a private message because I don't know if I can post the links to the images on an official board.
There are basically 2 methods for flashing/rooting the 1.33.0007.
Method 1:
1.Download Android 1.5 CRC24 NBH
2. rename to sappimg.nbh and copy to sdcard
3. start magic with volume down+power
4. confirm with trackball
5. If everything works ok, follow 8. on method 2
If this fails with "Main version older" then copy sappimg.nbh to a goldcard and try again. (Some brands of SD-Cards are known to be incompatible with a goldcard, so you might need to try some different ones)
If it fails to flash with a goldcard you need method 2:
1. Download Android 1.5 CRC24 NBH (if you don't have it already)
2. Download 32A Image
3. rename 2.53.707.2_-_sappimg.zip to sappimg.zip and copy to goldcard
4. start magic with volume down+power and confirm flashing with trackball
5. turn off phone
6. delete sappimg.zip from goldcard and copy the "Android 1.5 CRC24 NBH" as sappimg.nbh to sdcard
7. start magic with volume down+power and confirm flashing with trackball
8. after restarting you should now be at Android 1.5 CRC24, install flashrec.apk to phone, change recovery image, boot into recovery and flash engineering spl.
Hope this will help you.

*IF* you load the 32A radio and SPL and ROM on your 32B, you may only succeed in bricking your phone.
They are different devices. You can try it if you like, but be ready to throw the phone away.

Okay my phones info is as follows:
UK Vodafone running Donut 1.6
Code:
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0007 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
Jul 31 2009, 15:49:25

I do not know if this helps you guys.http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-root-a-donut-phone-android-1-6/
All phones are diffrent I have perfect spl too and I manage to flash in fastboot.
I've found something which I think might help on a German android forum and it looks like the guy succeeded in doing something similar to what I posted originally in this thread from what I can gather from google translate
http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-hacking-modding-htc-magic/11285-flashen-mit-1-33-0007-spl.html
can anyone help me out and post a translation for me? (I mean someone who can give a translation not from a website unless it's blindingly better then google)
Current translation via google...
edit -
it should be called "flashed with SPL 1.33.0007"

Hello, nice forum you have here
I have the following problem:
Recently I wanted to flash my Vodafone Magic (Android 1.6 SPL 1.33.0007) with Cyanogenic Mod.
Since I have a "perfect" SPL, I've tried it with a gold card. Everything went well so far. Only apparently I had made a version for the 32A, then stood for in fastboot Ship S-OFF H and I could only make recovery for the HTC version of RA, rather than the Google version. I had taken here -> ROM v2.53.707.2 (SPL engineering had v1.33.2010) the rom but works as well and booted normally.
anyway I wanted to be the recovery of RA have wrote -> HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip CM 4.2.5 and later.
The flash itself went well, but I stayed in the HTC bootscreen Magic hang himself and it did nothing more.
In another forum I was told that what I have by gold card (power + vol down) flashed (the sappimg.zip) was just for the 32A, and it therefore did not go.
Jetz, I wanted to ask what am I then can take the 32B, then to flash it to the cyanogenic mod? Because irgednwie I'm a little confused at the 10,000 versions at XDA dev .....
I hope someone can help me there. I'm just glad that the phone because I did not have gebricked garkeine backup (duchzufall had found it here in the forum, the firmware vodafone stock and re-flashed)
thank you in advance
-edit -
ah, I'm stupid.
The stock firmware I had was re-flashed V1.5 .. have then by Flashrecovery the CMrecovery flashed and book now funzt everything.
no offense

32A Magic Rooting problems

Hey guys, apologies if this is a commonly asked question, but I've spent all day attempting to root my HTC Magic. I've tried methods such as fastboot (get a error message, tried Flashrec with an Amon Ra recovery, that didn't want to work either, and now I really dont know where to go. My phone details are as followed:
32A
HBOOT-1.76.0008 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.08.19
Can anyone give me a set of instructions that will explain (the more detailed the better) how to Root my HTC Magic, and then install a custom ROM onto it? (looking to get 2.1 onto it) I've got the ADB up and running, so theres a start?
I would love you forever and ever, and perhaps give you a cookie?
thankyou in advance,
james
Erm... If you go into H-Boot (Volume Down + Power) You see 32A (bla bla bla) S-(ON/OFF) and then is it a 'H' or 'G'?

[ROM]RUU_Sapphire_T-Mobile_US_3.12.531.1_FRG83D_release_signed

Here full RUU froyo update for Sapphire
http://www.filefactory.com/file/b4d...obile_US_3.12.531.1_FRG83D_release_signed.exe
Enjoy!
Cool
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
RUU says:
Code:
ModelID: SAPP30000
CIDNUM: T-MOB010
This means this RUU is ONLY FOR the MyTouch3g (Sapphire 32B)
Not sure what this is ? (i mean, what is a full RUU froyo update for Sapphire)???
The rule of thumb is if you don't know what something is, chances are YOU DON'T NEED IT.
This is the official update to Android 2.2.1 (no Sense) for the MyTouch3G, which is the american version of the Sapphire 32B. As your country is Serbia, where the 32A was distributed, you should stay away from this.
Yeah but i got my phone in Switzerland ,so i got a 32b sadly.
I'd like to try this...are there any spl/radio req.?
You're better off using one of the custom, rooted ROMs based on this.
Lol k

unable to root
so i installed this on my mt3g and it has unrooted my phone.
sapphire pvt 32b ship s-on g
hboot-1.33.0013 (sapp30000)
cpld-10
radio-2.22.28.25

i've tried every method i could find (and understand) to try to reroot my phone to no avail.
ive done the unlockr method of downgrading using sappimg.nbh - including using a goldcard but i get an error that it failed and that its an older version (i just cant remember wat the exact message was)
ive done the universal unlocker thats supposed to work on the 2.2.1 but it freezes (super one click or somethign)
flashrec wont work obviously cuz i cant downgrade to 1.5
anything else i can try? im no expert obviously..but does this mean that i have to wait till a new, updated method is out to root my phone? since this is the latest tmobile release?

What if I'm already on 2.2.1? What rom out there would be higher than that? I get the same Main Version Older message that they are? Is it referring to my hboot which is 1.33.0013?
did it...but ill try this

through settings i go to about phone and it says i have android version 2.2.1
i went through this process already but ill try it again because in the steps i took, i dont remember doing the reverse string thing. redownloading sappimg.zip now
appreciate the help
went through flashing sappimg...after a while it just says main version is older! update fail! do you want to reboot device?
ive rooted before and none of the processes ive used before are working. im thinking that i just need to be patient until a new method/adjustment comes out. but then again, im a newb.
So still new to rooting and custom roms and what not....bottom line is that this is for my T-Mobile mytouch 3g correct? I'm running the beatsmod from the forum runs pretty well I want to try this but I have a question do I need the new radio and spl? Or just flash in recovery mode?
can anyone give me an answer please?

Lol . Search on the Android software development .. I think there are some apk`s that could help you with rooting ( or google one click root ) . After that you can instal a custom recovery by installing RomManager and install your desired recovery from there.
Hope I`ve made some sense ...Pm me if you don`t manage to do it.

ive done the superclick method and it went nowhere but i see some further instructions that ill try with it. if i can get it rooted, ill be bale to manage from there hopefully with the recovery and the roms. even the universal one click root apk is useless now since 2.2.1 has patched the loophole it used to use.
ill give it a shot..l
great...superoneclick worked for me...thats what i get for trying to do things too quick...i actually tried using this before but it didnt work and now i see the reason y (too stupid to read instructions)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
my phone is now rooted (i can grant superuser permissions)...now ill go on to installing a custom recovery and rom
sorry to those that had to put time into helping me due to me not doing my part and thanks for your help
and the beat goes on..
everything's getting weird now. my phone got rooted but i've been unable to install a custom recovery (amon_ra's). when i put in the appropriate command into terminal, i get an error that it failed or its not found and apparently its an issue with the root method that worked for me. yes i did use rom manager and flashed a recovery using rom manager but have been unable to boot into recovery. the tmobile screen comes up and the phone goes nowhere frmo there until i pull the battery and restart it.
now im trying another method to root and the whole sdk method is messing up. if i type fastboot devices into command prompt im told that theres a dsl missing. if i type adb shell or adb devices, adb is not a recognized command.
im considering accepting that all i can get is root and not a custom rom/recovery
