I'm coming towards the end of the period in which I can return my Nexus S for a full refund and therefore need to make a decision.
One of my considerations is the poor support I've read that Samsung give in the event of hardware failure. Anyone else concerned about this? Anyone have first hand experience?
With the problems reported here I fear that one of these days my now perfect Nexus S is going to develop one or more faults that will require Samsung support and I'd really like to believe I can resolve any problems without too much hassle.
If Samsung support really has historically been that bad, do we think it will improve now it has the Google name to live upto?

This phone is supported by Google, not Samsung. If you have problems with the phone, you would go to Google, not Samsung.
That's the only reason any of us bought the Nexus S ... because we DON'T have to worry about Samsung support.
I've used Samsung support on my previous phone (Vibrant) and must say I was very impressed. I would even go as far as to say I had a better experience with them than I did with HTC. I had a bad GPS chip on my Vibrant and Sammy had me send my phone in at THEIR expense. My phone was returned in 100% working order in only 6 calendar days. When I send my HD2 to HTC I had to pay my own shipping to them and it took 14 days to get my phone back.

Wrong, Google is letting Samsung take over support of the device, after the blunder they had with the N1 they realized they couldnt handle it.
Even with the N1 if something was wrong with the device and needed an exchange they would send you over to HTC
When I had problems with my defective power button on my N1, I called Google, then they redirected me to HTC.

Exactly, all Google did was try and troubleshoot if they couldnt help you then they would send you to HTC, but now its just strait to Samsung no google no nothing

If Samsung is supporting the Nexus S, then we're all doomed.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!
I guess you meant they're handling tech support? Because Google is still in charge of software updates right?

Most likely we will not see it In our phones

Who cares about Gingerbread on our phone.
True

With the Nexus S already sporting it and google actually programming for a Galaxy phone, the chances of Gingerbread are very good.
Google is already optimizing it for the hummingbird as we speak, it'll be easier for Samsung to port it to their other devices.
Before it was easy to port to the EVO and everything else just because the nexus one had very similar CPUs to all of them.
How do you know its using the same processor as our galaxy s phones?

Most of the speculations suggest that it has a different processor, just saying.......

not everyone has the money to outright buy the phone in feb and even if u got your cap at release your a long ways from an upgrade I will pay 600 or whatever it is because i have to have it. And I really think samsung working on froyo was a waste, seeing as how gingerbread is coming out soon, should have just upgraded to that next.

lol, agreed. Don't know why so much talk about "Gingerbread"
We don't even have "Froyo" yet, only the leaked version. And even then, when the official release does come out, I won't be upgrading. Too bloated when AT&T get's their hands on it. I'll stick with the customs.
Plus I think most of the people in here that has any of the Galaxy S phones will most likely part ways when "Gingerbread" is out. I know I will (and I don't think our Galaxy S phones will get it either).
I also believe there is no "GPS fix" for our phones in the future either and there won't be one.
Haven't been proven wrong yet. (Remember the GPS "improvement" in September) What a JOKE!

That's the problem, Samsung figured if it put in all the most powerful toys in a single package and didn't give a crap about how it was put together or how the software is to make it actually work, it'd still sell on specs alone.
And they were right.
So they now have absolutely no incentive to make a more quality phone in the future. They're just lucking out that Google is choosing them to be the next Nexus (if rumors/leaks are true, of course).

Here is the problem samsung doesn't seem to get. We buy their phones on a two year contract. They get paid monthly or whatever from AT&T for us signing up for two years. Who in the $&$& wants to buy their phone when you don't even get a full six months of support from samsung. I have to pay AT&T for two years to buy this phone. I know apple gets paid monthly from AT&T as part of their subsidation process. I bet samsung does too. They get paid for nothing. What a rip.
2.2 should have been released sept at the latest. Things should be gearing up for 2.3.... And we are still waiting for 2.2... Last samsung phone.
Anyone who wants to can install the leaked 2.2. I have, it's rooted, and has lagfix installed. It's very fast and GPS works great...I'm just sayin'.

Been there done that still have broken gps. I bought the captivate assuming they would fix the gps. I still doubt that broad com would somehow make a gps module that doesn't work.
Agreed, I had a captivate with a go phone sim in it, and now have a fascinate on vzw, we actually got a leak last week,( if u thought att was behind hear this) is was eclair, it did address and fix, GPS Fully, but this is a eclair maintenance update scheduled to come out in December. Apple may have a special deal but other Phone makers do not. Samsung, Moto, HTC - they sell through many channels, not just AT&T - and they sell off contract.
The way it works for hardware:
AT&T buys phones from Samsung... probably about $300 per phone. They sell them subsidized for $200 or maybe $0.99 or they sell it unsubsidized for $499. Samsung makes their profit on the phone sale when they wholesale them to AT&T.
Updates are created by Samsung on behalf of the carrier. If AT&T doesn't want to bother with an update, then the manufacturer doesn't create it. Again, this goes for Samsung, Moto, HTC, etc. It has been this way for WinMo and Android. Nothing new here.
Believe it or not, Apple also sells the phones for fixed price to AT&T. They may make money on some monthly cut, but that is a separate deal. But don't compare Apple, they have a deal different from every other phone maker out there.

Why? Has this been successful with any other phone? I have never seen any evidence that AT&T cares. Samsung designed this way because AT&T wanted it this way, so petitioning Samsung won't matter. The only thing that will matter is not buying from AT&T (or Verizon) in the future.

This. OP I feel your hope and frustration but it won't do much. Samsung just makes the device to how AT&T specifies and AT&T just really doesn't care. Like the one guy said, we just gotta stop buying the service and considering T-Mobile eased on the contracts and didn't lock there boot loader, it won't be that bad.

When a 32gb nexus is $350 and the 32gb GS4 GE Will be around 700 dollars? I'd rather have spent it on two Nexus 4's but then again I'd have a stupid smartphone if I got the GE S4 since I'd have all the sensors and nothing to use them with. That sir is a waste.

And where is it official that the Google Edition will not include any functionality for all the new sensors, etc? You do release that Samsung has the source code right? And as one of Google's closest manufacturing partners.... It's still rather unlikely that they'd ship a $650 flagship phone with all its key features gimped... Right?
I mean, it totally could happen, but I find it rather unlikely that it'll be that much worse than a regular GS4. And before you go on a "it's all baked into TouchJizz therefore it can't work without it" style rant, that's simply not true. Again, Samsung designed the fricking phone, I'm pretty sure they can expose an intelligent interface to their fancy new sensors without the TW framework if they wanted.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but don't assume that these types of questions haven't been thought of, and possible solutions found, by the smart folks at Google and Samsung.
The $$$ on the other hand versus a Nexus 4, is a different question. Clearly the GS4 is a much better phone, but a 2x more expensive phone? Probably not.

Uhh because a lot of that stuff isn't built into aosp yet?? Same reason why they already said the One Google edition won't use the IR blaster. Its not that Samsung isn't capable of doing it, its that I doubt Google will let them being that its supposed to be stripped down vanilla android. Verizon messed with the galaxy nexus and are rumored to have been discluded from further nexuses because of it. We could also all shut up and stop speculating until it comes out

How much is a 16gb unlocked galaxy S4? 625$
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BV1NKCW/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
How much is 2 nexus 4's? 600$
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_4_8GB?id=nexus_4_8gb&hl=en
so technically you can get two cheaper for the price of one. And you speak as if I don't think Google could add those features in, I know they made the code. But I also know that they are going to follow the footsteps HTC did when they released their Google edition. Its the lines of Google edition to make it as bone stock as possible. As long as the OS runs with the camera and calling that's what matters to them. Yes maybe down the road Samsung will give an update for the sensors, but that will be down the road. Also the GE won't be the last of the line. When they ship the red, blue, brown, and purple they will be shipped with standard touchwiz.

It only has 26 signatures because most of us know that there is not sufficient user-base outrage for this practice to change.
The logic is as follows:
Group 1) I'd garner that 70-80% of all AT&T Galaxy S4 owners are unaware of what Linux is, let alone it's relation to their phone. So forget about bootloaders, and signing chains, and stuff like that. It's all greek to them. They just want to browse the web, visit Facebook, and send text messages. If it happens on a slim phone with a big pretty screen, then they're happy.
Group 2) There's maybe another 10-15% who actually understand the underlying concepts of Android/Linux etc, but who have no interest in modifying their phones. Those are techy or semi-techy people, who again, really just want to browse the web, use apps, and have a slim pretty phone.
Group 3) That leaves about 5-10% who actually desire to "modify" anything about their phone, and have any technical ability to do so.
Group 4) Out of that 5-10%, many of those people don't understand the intricacies of the boot process (or signature signing), and just "follow directions closely" to get what they want, and go home happy. That's probably the majority of visitors to XDA, which leaves....
Group 5) At most 5% of all AT&T Galaxy S4 users. These people actually understand how Android/Linux/boot chain process works, at least at a higher level. Don't ask them to read the source code, but they get the general idea.
Group 6) These are the people who actually understand and actually decide/agree to spend their time signing the petition.
Now to be fair, these numbers are as accurate as either the 2004 presidential election results or the number of secret NSA warrants issued every year. Aka, they're not very accurate. But I think you get the picture.
Even in the best case scenario, where you get 100% of Group 5 to sign, and god forbid, maybe even 100% of Group 4, that's still barely enough of a user base for AT&T to even consider your argument. And there's likely no reason they'd acquiesce anyway. While it's a big bummer to us modders, I'm sure there is a reason AT&T chose to go to the trouble of "locking the bootloader". In theory, it's a nice idea if you're selling to, I dunno, the government, or a big corporation... Your sales pitch is: "We use hardware in the phone to prevent modifying, so that when you go visit China, or wherever, we can 100% guarantee that no software bugs were installed in your phone. Secure bootloader means we can guarantee the entire process from boot up, to application loading, meaning your data is secure in our hands." Or some bullsh1t like that. Believe me, the reason at&t did it is for profit, but not to profit by screwing us modders over, to profit by engaging in a sales pitch to a select but profitable group of customers (who aren't you or me).
So long story short, it's a lost cause.
you have serious problems in math..
by the way, many people could be in the group that "just fallows directions closely" and still would like the bootloader to get unlocked (because someone with knowledge will take that advantage, create roms or whatever and share them with obviously, the "easy instructions to fallow"..

Lol, which is what I said... Granted in a rambling way, and duh, I pulled those numbers out of my butt. Which I also alluded to.
Either way, point stands that no petition is gonna change the situation. And that less than 30 people have signed said petition. That part ain't math, or subjective.
And as I also said, there's still the plane option...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Even if there were 100K signatures, unless people buy a different product so that the carrier sees it hurting their revenue, they have no incentive.
How many people ditched AT&T to buy the t-mobile version? Not many. So an unlocked boot loader, even with cheaper data plans, is not enough to fuel consumer outrage.
Petitions are meaningless if there are no consequences. If t-mo ever gets better coverage, I may switch, but until then any threat to leave by me is empty. I think AT&T knows that.
I signed petition and I sent it to many friends via email to bring attention to the matter. Maybe someone can post in Facebook and any other sites?? Im also considering donation towards bounty for developers who unlock bootloader or alternative methods of adding recovery.
I think what will add weight to this issue is the fact that you cannot do a factory data reset and that KIES complains about the firmware.
Some people with legit issues contacting Samsung for support may be instructed to "power off unit - hold volume down and power on - blah blah blah" which gets you to the android screen with message "cannot boot into normal mode"
Samsung cannot even suggest to anyone to reapply firmware to fix issues at this time.
How do I know this? I called them because I get "Unfortunately, Music has stopped" error message when I use the default music player and asked for help. I was given several things to try which got nowhere and then they wanted to open a ticket to ship my phone in for repair, which I declined saying "I need my phone as it is my primary source of communication for home and work and cannot be without it for weeks". Then I got the survey at the end, to which I complimented the support effort but am beyond upset with Samsungs product as a simple thing like Music not working requires me to ship back the phone. $700 for a phone that "just about works" definitely will influence my next purchase.
Why is the s3 unlocked but not the s4? I had the Sony ion and decided to get a new phone, my contract isn't up for a year and some change so I just bought it out right off eBay for 310$ brand new. Its unlocked and when I had my s2 I had tasks AOKP running on it. So why lock the 4?

What happens If I drop my phone and want to replace my screen??
What happens if My speakers stop working??

I'm from INDIA and I would like to know what you people think of the customer support... Though It comes with no warrenty but still there must be a place where I could get me device repair....

There's just one thing that bugs me as OnePlus is a new company on the other hand we have samsung who is well known for there customer support.... What about customer support from OnePlus??
What happens If I drop my phone and want to replace my screen??
What happens if My speakers stop working??
What happens if anything go wrong???
As there's nothing from even the company about there customer service It really bugs me.

OnePlus is actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oppo, which is a large company (Oppo owns them, but they operate as their own company).
Plus they are shiping the device in a bubble wrap with a USB chord

These were pre-production models that were given away (or rather, sold for $1) as part of their Smash (or donate) The Past promotion. The retail packaging and accessories hadn't been made yet, so rather than making the winners wait, they sent the phones with a USB cord and a note (and email) saying that all that stuff will be sent later.
Here's what the retail packaging will look like:

Why do you think there won't be a warranty?

I just guessed as OnePlus is a new company and isn't well settled in the market so there's no way they will have customer centers everywhere and hence they wont globally provide warranty...
Samsung's support in India isn't exactly notorious for being stellar either.
Plus if you're asking here, you're likely a fan of customization of your device. Since it's Exynos-based, expect the Note 3 Neo to have little to no community development.

Yes your's right there wont be much of development on Exynos. I'm getting One 64 giggs once it is out. My only question was about the customer support or if they wont give any support its fine with me...
Essentially this. Seriously tempted to cancel my Pixel 2 XL panda order and order one of these instead. Ironically, I'd probably still get this before the Panda XL, which would be with me around 21st December!
What's HTC like to deal with if you have issues? My previous HTC phone was a One X, so I'm a bit behind!
100 quid less, twice the memory & 2Gb more RAM along with expandable storage and the second best Android camera is swaying me, but stock android is making me waver...

Very true. Don't actually care about Daydream, which I know is a perk of OLED. What are the software updates like now? More frequent, or few and far between?
I've heard some truly horrendous examples of HTCs customer service when it comes to repairs, both on the internet and a couple through my old place of work (mobile phone repair contact centre), which is another reason I'm hesitating.

Ive never had to deal with them much. But to be honest theres a lot of bad reports about google customer service too.
I think there pretty good with updates...not google quick. The u11 and i think htc 10 got 7.1.1 and 7.1.2

My experience i had with HTC (NL) was always good, proper response and whenever i had some issues HTC picked it up and without any discussion repaired my phones. i really like them, and yes there will always be some to say to each company but i am using HTC form the old days (when the produced phones under the brand of Qtek) and they never really disappointed me.
With the HTC online store, the only place I can buy the U11+ | and no financing option, I can not consider it sadly. LG V30 is my bottom choice - the OnePlus 5T could be good - and the Razer Phone is a good choice also.
