When there is a will there is a way. Chances are it will be a long time if ever but, I am sure we will see custom roms eventually

Most likely we will not see it In our phones

Get real, anyone who reads this thread is gonna buy the newest latest greatest anyways.
Who cares about Gingerbread on our phone.

True

With the Nexus S already sporting it and google actually programming for a Galaxy phone, the chances of Gingerbread are very good.
Google is already optimizing it for the hummingbird as we speak, it'll be easier for Samsung to port it to their other devices.
Before it was easy to port to the EVO and everything else just because the nexus one had very similar CPUs to all of them.

How do you know its using the same processor as our galaxy s phones?

Most of the speculations suggest that it has a different processor, just saying.......

not everyone has the money to outright buy the phone in feb and even if u got your cap at release your a long ways from an upgrade I will pay 600 or whatever it is because i have to have it. And I really think samsung working on froyo was a waste, seeing as how gingerbread is coming out soon, should have just upgraded to that next.

Lol we don't see any evidence of Samsung putting effort into Froyo. I know there have been a few build leaks, but c'mon, you don't really think they put a ounce of sweat into it right?

lol, agreed. Don't know why so much talk about "Gingerbread"
We don't even have "Froyo" yet, only the leaked version. And even then, when the official release does come out, I won't be upgrading. Too bloated when AT&T get's their hands on it. I'll stick with the customs.
Plus I think most of the people in here that has any of the Galaxy S phones will most likely part ways when "Gingerbread" is out. I know I will (and I don't think our Galaxy S phones will get it either).
I also believe there is no "GPS fix" for our phones in the future either and there won't be one.
Haven't been proven wrong yet. (Remember the GPS "improvement" in September) What a JOKE!

That's the problem, Samsung figured if it put in all the most powerful toys in a single package and didn't give a crap about how it was put together or how the software is to make it actually work, it'd still sell on specs alone.
And they were right.
So they now have absolutely no incentive to make a more quality phone in the future. They're just lucking out that Google is choosing them to be the next Nexus (if rumors/leaks are true, of course).

Here is the problem samsung doesn't seem to get. We buy their phones on a two year contract. They get paid monthly or whatever from AT&T for us signing up for two years. Who in the $&$& wants to buy their phone when you don't even get a full six months of support from samsung. I have to pay AT&T for two years to buy this phone. I know apple gets paid monthly from AT&T as part of their subsidation process. I bet samsung does too. They get paid for nothing. What a rip.
2.2 should have been released sept at the latest. Things should be gearing up for 2.3.... And we are still waiting for 2.2... Last samsung phone.

Anyone who wants to can install the leaked 2.2. I have, it's rooted, and has lagfix installed. It's very fast and GPS works great...I'm just sayin'.

Been there done that still have broken gps. I bought the captivate assuming they would fix the gps. I still doubt that broad com would somehow make a gps module that doesn't work.

Agreed, I had a captivate with a go phone sim in it, and now have a fascinate on vzw, we actually got a leak last week,( if u thought att was behind hear this) is was eclair, it did address and fix, GPS Fully, but this is a eclair maintenance update scheduled to come out in December. I don't know about everyone else but I could give a duck less is they give me the greatest eclair ever made. I don't want it. Apple may have a special deal but other Phone makers do not. Samsung, Moto, HTC - they sell through many channels, not just AT&T - and they sell off contract.
The way it works for hardware:
AT&T buys phones from Samsung... probably about $300 per phone. They sell them subsidized for $200 or maybe $0.99 or they sell it unsubsidized for $499. Samsung makes their profit on the phone sale when they wholesale them to AT&T.
Updates are created by Samsung on behalf of the carrier. If AT&T doesn't want to bother with an update, then the manufacturer doesn't create it. Again, this goes for Samsung, Moto, HTC, etc. It has been this way for WinMo and Android. Nothing new here.
Believe it or not, Apple also sells the phones for fixed price to AT&T. They may make money on some monthly cut, but that is a separate deal. But don't compare Apple, they have a deal different from every other phone maker out there.

Guess we'll be able to rock Gingerbread :D

# Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.
# New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher.
# Completely revamped user interface.
We have all those
1ghz Hummingbird
512mb ram
4" SAMOLED
;D
Knowing samsung ... my guess is they will never build a release with it. On to the next piece of hardware.
I hope they prove me wrong.
Regardless if Samsung releases a 3.0 ROM for us or not, it will be ported.
I want Froyo when it comes available, because I already know it rocks.
As for Gingerbread, nobody knows if it is a turd or not, so I am not about to get all worked up about am OS that won't be available for my device until late next year, if ever...
However... it would be nice to know there will be long-term support and development for this device. It is quite an expensive piece of equipment to hit end-of-life a year later.

I got mine for $150... but with the 2 year contract.
However, since AT&T is the only provider that has good coverage at my house, i am locked into them regardless of whether I have a contract or not.
2 year extension only means I have to wait 18 months to get the latest-greatest phone... I'm not complaining.
I could've gotten the Captivate for free, or the Iphone 4 for $199 still keeping my unlimited plan.
But I just bought the Captivate $350, still have my plan. Just waiting for the latest thing lol

I had 3 choices
1) Get captivate for free, keep my plan, put 2 year contract on a family line.
2) Get iphone 4, do "cross-upgrade" (put contract on a family line) register micro-sim/imei to me, and keep my plan.
3) Buy either phone off contract
I went with 3, but not "official", I saw some guy on craigslist selling it new in box $350, so I bought it, took my sim out of old Motorola Backflip (CRAP OUT-DATED DEVICE) and placed it in my Captivate.
So I don't know if the phone is "technically" covered by att, but I registered it with samsung.
You didn't buy it from AT&T so they will not cover anything. Not even support if they didn't want to. The latter is not likely as I have purchased 2nd hand devices and they have not refused to provide technical support.

Talk to AT&T if you bought the device from them.
I got my Captivate via LetsTalk.com and I was given a checkbox that says "I WANT TO KEEP MY 30$ UNLIMITED PLAN"
If you're still fresh into your new contract you should be able to tell them to switch it to your good ol' unlimited data plan and don't let them tell you the otherwise. Be persistent.

You know, I've been worried that this may be a general problem for all smart phones.
There is little, actually negative, incentive for manufactures to upgrade the OS of any phone. They don't charge for the upgrades and new phones are "relatively" cheap.
Additionally, the players in question tend to be hardware manufactures not software manufactures.
I think the deck is stack against those of us that want to see OS upgrades on smart phones.
Just my 2 cents worth, YMMV.

Yep, I'm going to agree here. A wireless company would need to invest lots of money for a team to test and prepare a new OS after it's received from the manufacturer to be sent out to a device. Or they could just spend that money on checking a new incoming phone which would already be prepped for the new OS.
In today's world they know a majority of us are going to be drooling over the next big thing in a year. Why give you something for free when they can get you to buy it?
The only phone to really break this mold is the iPhone. Only because it's one piece of hardware controlled by the manufacturer. They only have to worry about the OS working with their own hardware. Where Gingerbread will need to be adapted to every manufacturer that wants to use it.
If it looks amazing I'll be praying for Samsung and AT&T to step up to the plate for their customers; but I won't be checking BGR expecting anything.

I keep hearing that google said late Q4-early Q1.
The way I see it, samsung, htc, moto, nobody cares if you get a higher os. They will make an update due to calender reasons like the 2.1 to 2.2 to get you to buy a device with an old os.
But if the devs can put 2.2 on a g1, which google said couldn't happen, doesn't really matter what hardware we have. It's up to all of us to support the devs to make anything happen.

Gingerbread

Hey guys, quick question. I'm not that familiar with ROM development, so I turn to you. I highly doubt that we can count on sammy to develop gingerbread for us, so do we think that it will even be possible to port it? Reading design gears thread, it seems that he can't quite get true AOSP running on the captivate because of how heavily samsung has modified the OS, does this mean that we will never see sweet 3.0? If that's the case, than it might be time to sell and buy a nexus one...

That wasn't my experience with the HTC Touch HD which at the time was supposed to be the best of the best in hardware.
So, AndroidAndMe.com posted a rumor about Samsung is going to have a new Google-Experience phone running on new hardware (Tegra 2 based) and Gingerbread ready by the end of 2010.
There goes your dream any Galaxy S phones getting Generbread ever.
Why would you say that? Samsung released the Galaxy S to 4 carriers, and are DIRECTLY competing with Apple with hardware aimed at the iPad and even the iPod Touch! Why anyone would think Samsung would just drop a top of the line smartphone on us and hang us out to dry is very stupid, and not very thought out.
Samsung, if possible, WILL "think" about Gingerbread. And by "think" they don't mean mull it over some peanuts and beer, they mean QA, hardware analysis, software development. They didn't come along to latch a customer on for a year, they came on to steal the market from Apple, and the latest Beta Froyo should let you all know they're doing alot more than thinking about it.

Because I have owned 5 Samsung Smartphones and couple DVD players as well as their top of line Blu Ray players. And they did exactly like I said to every single product I purchased.
Samsung's market strategy is to blanket market with latest and greatest hardware every 6 months or so. Everything they released so far always have something unfinished or not working. By the time they fix all the issues, the existing product is discontinued and a new generation of the product is already on the market. And the cycle continues.
Problem with phones are the 2 year contract. If samsung just leaves everyone who bought a galaxy s phone out to dry, so much for potential sales for our next phone.
Anyways, since the galaxy tab will (?) receive gingerbread, i'm hopefull it will be on our phones, through samsung or xda.

i dont understand what this has to so with att? i keep on seeing the blame put on att but the vibrant doesnt have anything that the captivate doesn't have 'cept for hsupa. if the vibrant had froyo and plans for ginger bread then yeah i could see att getting thrown in but att doesnt decide the fate of the whole galaxy s line. froyo is coming, gingerbread might be or might not be, i have a fealing that froyo will be realesed on the whole galaxy s usa line about the same time, and they may be holding back on the gsm phones untill it is ready for the cdma phones which will take longer as there are more differences in hardware for the epic and fascinate. i have an aquaintance at samsung who is a senior engineer for the cdma phones. he cant give me details but in general he said they are working around the clock on the froyo update and there shouldn't be an unusually long wait. for what ever that's worth. i dont know about gingerbread but i can only hope.

Droid prime to soon

The droid prime is suppose to be the successor to the droid charge, that's my problem with android. The charge just came out a couple of months back, and yet to receive a major update! What samsung should be doing is updating there flag ship phones first, there just selfish, knowing people will continue buying there new products they just leave us to rot. these phones come out way to fast, can we get a chance to enjoy the phone with gb first? The prime will probably be out before we even get gb smh. HELLO SAMSUNG AND VERIZON, THE DROID CHARGE IS ONE OF YOUR FLAGSHIP DEVICES, UPDATE TO THE LATEST SOFTWARE!, THEY RELEASE A BUGGY PHONE FOR NEARLY 600$ AND I GOT MINE FREE! JUST IMAGINE IF I WOULD'VE PAID I'D BE REALLY PISSED. bottom line is the droid charge is a great phone and I want to use it to its full potential before I upgrade to a newer device.spread the word care for your customers

So would you rather they release buggy software prematurely to fix a buggy phone? They've been working on GB (and it's been leaking), which is why I've been enjoying GB for well over a month. Anyways, what you're upset about is the way the cell phone industry tends to work. They're not going to stop updating their model lines just because they haven't put out an update for existing models yet.
Just imagine how Thunderbolt owners feel.
Correction: Droid(Nexus) Prime time is a Nexus successor.

phone envy is frequent for me personally
whenever a new phone comes out i get pissed i bought my previous one
but honestly the prime and charge have little connection to each other...if the prime is a nexus phone then basically its a samsung designed phone that google does the software for, so it would have no impact whatsoever on touchwiz updates for the charge
samsung has submitted dozens of builds to verizon and from what i can see each one gets better and better
is it annoying that there is no official gb yet? sure but the same could be said for the fascinate or even worse no official FROYO for the continuum
vzw and samsung combo equals slow updates
its a reality of buying from those two and its not a secret (droid branding or not)
the thunderbolt doesnt have official gb either fwiw nor the lg lte phone
i personally have an inc2 and wont be pissed when the vigor comes out (same time frame inc2 launch to vigor vs charge launch to prime)...granted i have several upgrades and will probably just go pick that up too
The Droid Prime is likely NOT to be a Nexus device (or else it would have the Nexus name). It's software will most likely be managed by Verizon, rather than Google, and probably carry all of the crapware we've all come to know and love hate.
Phone dev cycles seem to be roughly bi-annually to quarterly, depending on the software and hardware available. At any given time, any one dev shop (HTC, Samsung, wherever) will be simultaneously be working on at least 2 software versions for any given device (as evidenced by the lower build date on the Fascinate's initial GB leak compared to the final FroYo leak).
And to pick some nits with the OP:
supposed, their, they're, their, too
Thank you BGR for starting the DROID Prime rumor. NO ONE knows what the device will be when it shows up, when it will show up, or much of anything else about it. We have a few unconfirmed details, but that is it. The people that do know what the device will be called aren't talking. Also, just because it is labeled with DROID doesn't mean that it won't be a Google Experience Phone. Unless you have physical proof of what you're talking about, it would be great of everyone to stop with the DROID Prime rumor until the actual device name is announced.

Could be that features of TW4 require something specific to the SGS2 phone. Or, Samsung doesn't want to back-port it on their own. Either way, nothing you can really do about it.
If you buy a car, and they change the features on the next model year, do you go and complain to the car manufacturer/dealer like this? You're spending significantly more than $600 for a new car, so I'd hope so...

Its just how it should be, but no problem, I will get the samsung prime knowing they won't be able to improve the next gen devices by alot.the wave of android phones will slow down significantly. Coming to the Charge from the Fascinate I knew damn well that this would happen but I took it anyway as it was the best option (and still is... LOL bionic), and I don't regret it at all... if you haven't figured out by now that there's gonna be a new phone out every six months or so thats 10 times better than your current one then you must be new to android... I know it must take a lot to try and update the tons of phones a carrier has on each cell provider, making specific coding changes to get it to work with the individual phones hardware and whatnot so I don't mind and will be more than happy to burn an upgrade or drop some money on the new beast thats out at the time

Buyer/owner, whatever...my point was that you sound like you don't want the phone in its current state. I'm running a Gingerbread ROM with the TouchWiz 4.0 launcher. If your biggest complaint is the lack of those two things, they've both been available for those willing to put them on the phone themselves.

It's called technology ... it's moving forward. Once the phones catch up to the current technology, the onslaught of phones will stop ... just like you stated. The fact you even brought this up, about a phone that details about the phone aren't even released yet. Much less even said to be released on the Verizon network ... is redundant in itself. You're a troll, and must be treated as such. I would ignore any comments this moron makes just for the simple fact he's moaning about a device he may not even see. Not to mention ... Droid Charge isn't even Verizon's "flagship" phone. That would be the Bionic. Have a nice day.

No more updates for Galaxy series

I keep hearing that Sammy's perspective is that there is no "financial incentive" to provide updates to old phones. Well here is one. I will never buy another samsung android phone so long as they have this policy. I will also tell everyone who will listen to do the same.
I know that if they do not support devices as recent as the SGS4G, it is only a matter of time before their new devices are unsupported.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Heh, Raver and I were talking about why they would wind up not giving ICS to the Vibrant and it was for this reason. They're a capitalist company, and updating older phones would not be good for business. People wouldn't have an incentive to upgrade if they got the latest software all the time.
I am a little mad that they're not going to update the T959V to ICS since it falls within the 18 month time window that they're supposed to provide upgrades for. Go figure.
Yeah Sammy really wiped it's ass with the pledge it made to Google about the 18 month window.
Isnt hardware a good incentive to upgrade?

I agree with you. Hardware is a good enough incentive, but samsung is too greedy and cheap to provide the software updates for their older device. The SGS 4G is still relative new too. This is why there are people still buying, using, and praising Apple. Their support and service put samsung to shame.

Upgrades come once every 2 years unless you drop 600 in a phone. The bs is that a new phone with better hardware comes out every 4 months and all other phones no longer get supported due to " hardware" or some crap. The galaxy s3 is coming out in a few months. Wanna bet my galaxy s2 won't be able to run android 5.0 due to hardware limitations. There are phones with weaker specs than my sgs4g that are getting ics. It's corporate greed on Sammy's part really. This is the one area, in my opinion, that apple does right. They support their devices for a good couple years. Samsung could, they just don't.

Samsung failure to provide future support - opinion
I for one, have always liked Samsung phones, since my Captivate, then Vibrant, when I switched to tmobile, to the SGS4G. It was a blessing to see Gingerbread release and source for the SGS4G. Especially since it is so different from the other Galaxy S cousins. The Vibrant is still waiting for Gingerbread, and they have a petition to hopefully convince Samsung into at least giving a Gingerbread update.
I would be satisfied if they would release their Driver source or at least the driver API and associated libs so we as a community ( or on your own ) can build ICS or any other version for our phones after they drop support.

But we are indeed getting the "value pack" mentioned in the article after all; it should be a nice start, allowing for new features without necessarily offering a full ICS release.
Still, it's frustrating that the Nexus gets the full 4.0 but the Galaxy doesn't.

Sammie's loss, 'cause all I can say is, I'm stuck with 14 months left on this contract, and looks like I'm going back to HTC after that.
This also helps me to decide on my new tablet... and the brand won't be Samsung now.
I love my phone ... but I hate Samsung.
They are a bunch of capitalist bastards. I understand that everyone is out to make money, but as it was mentioned, many people have 2 year contracts with their phone company. I for one refuse to pay $600 for a phone. That is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. And personally I know many others who feel the same way ... we wait until our upgrade is available and then upgrade to the best possible option.
For those of us that feel the way that we do, not supporting their older devices just drives a knife between Samsung and us. Whether they support our phone or not... I will have this phone until my contract is up. If Samsung does not support my device I can assure you this will be my last Samsung device that I will ever purchase.
I always found that odd, like simple math escapes the masses or some lol - kats refuse to pay 600 for a phone outright, but those same kats are cool with taking it in the ass for 2 years and paying 2136 in that time frame (basic Tmo 89 a month unlimited/limited plan)
...which means you're paying a **** ton more than 600 for that phone lol
OT;
I completely understand everyone's frustrations with capitalism, but Samsung is no different than any other large or small corporation blatantly raping our asses for cash (car insurance is a great example) - that's what we're all born and bred to do, become consumers, nothing more, nothing less - everyone on this god forsaken planet epitomizes insanity with their 9-5 lives of compliance, mediocrity and consumer slavery, don't do a damn thing about it, but then expect the slave owners to listen when they have a problem with the dirty spoon they're forced to eat with - lol wake the [email protected] up ..meh, better yet, simply continue to live your life in a dream world thinking you're unique and special ..just like everyone else - yeah, it's much easier that way lol - c'est la vie

I'm doubting an official release of ICS for the Thunderbolt. I'm hoping for HTC to release more sources so that we can just build it ourselves.
And as far as those two phones go, get the DNA. Or wait until February and get the HTC M7.

the only downfall with the dna in my opinion is that HTC makes it
now im not a htc hater, in fact they are the company that make me jump on the android ship, and ive loved them until I had the thunderbolt, rezound and incredible 4g
with the lack of updates from HTC im affraid to get the DNA, the best comparison is the droid razr and rezound; the razr has 4.1 ready to roll out in early Q1 2013 (there was an "accidental" ota update a few weeks back that gave a few hundred uses android 4.1, and motorola confirmed android 4.1 in early Q1) where the HTC rezound may get 4.1 but it will prolly be around june- and I honestly think thats on the early side.
but If HTC shows better upgrades ide jump over there to the DNA right now
Well if it makes you feel any better. The DNA already has sources out for it and it had them released the first couple of weeks of its release. It is very unlikely that a phone with the power that the dna has won't get updates. The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

Oh and on another note. Verizon is partially to blame for the lack of support and ics on this device. They keep stonewalling the update because I think they know we still have unlimited and they want us off of it. If they give us the update then it is unlikely we will upgrade anytime soon. You also can't forget that this phone was the first from Verizon that has the svdo capability which the source to that has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now. I think that Verizon is protecting that info because they may resurrect it later on. This and the rezound are the only two phones that are able to talk and surf even on 3g. The others that are able to do this use volte (voice over lte) which only works with 4g.

As much as I hate using my tbolt everyday....I will be holding on to the tbolt until the next nexus phone is released for Verizon. I've had an update available for a while and would gladly go get a S3 but the tbolt experience has pushed me to the point of...nexus or nothing from here on out.
Never realized how slow my TB is until I got a Nexus 7.
Anyway, I'm waiting for either the Galaxy S4 or the next Google/Moto phone. Maybe the HTC M7, depending on when the others are available.

I don't know why everyone insists on blaming HTC for lack of updates on the Thunderbolt.
It's not entirely in their hands, or I believe we would have had it long ago.
The biggest issue is actually the network itself and is what's held up many updates for various devices, in my opinion.
If you think a Nexus on VZW will make things different, THINK AGAIN.(I urge you to read the link)
No matter how good or common, or baseline a device may seem to be, it will never make the carrier any better.
Verizon just plain old SUCKS at getting updates out.

thanks for the feedback everyone!
I know HTC isnt just to blame, BUT if you look at apple for instance (sorry for bringing them up) they can do what they want with their phones, and the carriers can pretty much shove it if they dont like it.
now my question is this, why can apple do what they want (ex no bloatware, and updates whenever they see fit) and android companies (HTC, LG, Samsung, And even Google with the case of a nexus) cant?
I left my Thunderbolt for a Galaxy Note II and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me, and it still manages to sit comfortably in my pockets. The phone overall is excellent, but the two features that stand out are the stylus and the battery life.
I did not consider getting the DNA because it has an inferior screen (resolution aside,) and the battery life has been reported to be horrendous. I would say either the Note II or the GS3 are both very safe bets if you are looking to get a new phone.
As soon as my upgrade was up, I left my HTC Thunderbolt for a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've waiting way too long for HTC or Verizon to update this phone. I've read article after article and posted on HTC's Facebook pages and no response. They've lost me as a customer (HTC, not Verizon; I'm not giving up my unlimited data!).
I suggest the Samsung SIII or the Samsung GNII. I love my Note II and think the Thunderbolt is soooooo tiny after using it (just took a look at my Thunderbolt 5 minutes ago to see what I can do with it without any service on it).
While I'm not ecstatic about HTC, I feel like Verizon is to blame here. Just look at how their policies are for everything else.
For all of you crowing about unlimited, you realize you are paying a monthly rate which includeds a phone subsidy right? Except, you get no phone. It's like "How about you pay full price for a phone, and then pay a higher rate as though you actually got a phone for free." Ooooo sign me up!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Verizon is getting lots of blood from you for the sake of unlimited. If you have the money, I guess its one thing, but OTOH, if money werent an issue, you wouldn't care about overage fees.

I have two phones with unlimited data on my plan and if I took the share everything plan I would end paying $40 more a month and get less data than I actually need. Plus I still wouldn't get one of those phone subsidies you're talking about since I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I would definitely pay full retail for a phone before I lost unlimited. Also there are plenty of phones I could buy used that are excellent for half the price of retail or better.

Just like other guy stated I would be paying more if I went on share everything plan I don't use a crazy amount of data but 13-20 GB a month is where I sit. I am hoping Google releases a phone every year like the upcoming xphone so I can buy it off the play store, if they are in stock that is. But I will hold onto my unlimited data as long as I can cause their share everything plan is a joke, $40 for a smart phone access fee equals $29.99+$9.99 which is what we were already paying to buy the unlimited or 2gb or 4gb all they did was slap a two cent raise and hoped no one would notice. That is true but how can we expect a company to push out an ota for a one year old device that probably 95% of the purchasers moved to a different device. We should all be happy that they got their crap together enough to give us this last one.
