Insurance on the NS? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can you get insurance through Tmobile with this phone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Nope. I just ordered mine and talked to T-Mobile about insurance, as of right now they are not covering the NS. Maybe later they will...?

Thanks, I'll hold off on it for now then.

I did mine through Best Buy. They cover everything but loss. Should be enough. I hope....

Insurance from Best Buy
Offered at $10/month. Not worth it, IMHO.

I already had the $4.99 insurance on my line for the mytouch 4g and called t-mobile to see if it would transfer. The rep told me it would automatically cover the new phone including theft and loss. $120 deductible if theft or loss and free replacement for hardware and other warranty issues.

Good call, just confirmed this with T-Mobile as well. Now I'm worry free.

Will T-Mobile handset insurance still apply for this handset?
"T-Mobile will not be selling the phone so they will not be offering their insurance. We recommend Best Buy's Geek Squad Black Tie Protection ($9.99 per month)."

time to call t-mobile, again to confirm. maybe if I get 5 yes's its gotta be true right?

Weird just got off the phone with assuron (spelling?) and they said that it will probably be covered, similar to the nexus one, but what was weird was when he said that with the nexus one, when people said their phone broke, they would send a comparable phone ie. vibrant....

Id be careful with the best buy insurance, i bought it a long time ago once on my iPod which ended up breaking which they had to send it in and have them look into the issue to see if they would cover it, 3 weeks later i get it returned to me saying they would not cover the problem. I believe it won't cover a LOT of things that the T-Mobile like lost or water damange, so i would be careful getting the best buy "insurance" plan for this phone.
Also T-Mobiles insurance website, w**.phoneclaim.com/t-mobile does not list the Nexus S as one of the items they will be covering and i spoke with two T-Mobile reps in stores that said that it would not be covered, this is the main reason i am holding off on getting the phone.
Best of luck to all and i hope none of you need to worry about it anyways!

Best Buy Mobile offers $10/month for any accidental damage including water. NO DEDUCTIBLE, UNLIMITED claims. 48-72 hour rapid exchange process.
does not cover lost/stolen

I purchaed my insurance through squaretrade.com.
I have used them before with no problems on a claim. $100 up front, $50 dollar deductable if you break it.

Best option, as always, is to claim it through your home or renters insurance. It barely touches your policy and is much easier to file a claim, provided you have a solid insurance company.

I also called T-Mobile to confirm and my rep said yes, my insurance will transfer over to the new phone.

I got the most AMAZING Captivate case!

Its called the Geek Squad Black Tie Protection Plan!
Its only $10 a month and provides unlimited replacements for your device if it is damaged due to dropping it, water, etc. Now thats one heck of a case and you can't even feel it when its on the phone!
But seriously, I usually put cases on my phones because I am worried about damage. But for $10 a month (the cost of 2 drinks at a coffee house) you can stop worrying about getting a case for your device and just use it as the companies intended: naked. This was an offer I just couldn't pass up.
Has anyone else gotten the protection plan from Best Buy?
On a side note, when I was picking my device up from Best Buy the sales person said "What, you want me to price match AT&T? OK!" I didn't even ask him but he just said that and did it for me anyway, saving me $30! Usually the people at Best Buy are annoying crabby stuck-up brats but this guy was very helpful and saved me some cash.

I have it, too, but there is a downside - at least there was with my iPhone 3GS when I had to use the protection plan. During the first 30 days of owning a phone they'll replace it in-store. After 30 days, at least for the iPhone, they gave me a crappy dumb-phone loaner, and it took almost a week to get a replacement in.
I still have it on my captivate, but hope I don't have to use it. Having a plain phone for a week after being used to something better is a hard transition.
will they replace it if it still works but just looks fugly?

Yeah, you could throw it on the ground and shatter it to pieces and get it replaced.
And about the dumb phone, I have a Nexus so I can always fallback to that.
do you have to buy the phone through them to qualify?

Er, its not. I hate Best Buy with a passion. I never shop there unless its something like a cell phone where you can't find it for less anywhere else. I'm simply saying that their cell phone protection plan is better than any one I have ever seen. Unlimited replacements for $9 a month is a heck of a deal.
I could argue that 99% of the posts here about people drooling over their devices sound like advertisements. Maybe I just like the service offered?

it's $125 deductible. i got that insurance from ATT, and for 5 a month for 2 years and 125, it would be like paying the "discount" 200 for another brand new phone! which isn't too bad if i kill it within the first few months

True, and the BestBuy deal is not much better. $10 per month for 2 years is is $240. The only reason these insurance plans are worth it at all, is because you can't go buy a new one at the subsidized price again - not until about month 18. And at month 18 you can get anything you want for $200.
It is gambling - they are betting you won't break the phone, and you are betting you will. They win most of the time, or they wouldn't be offering this insurance.
SquareTrade covers smartphones for $6 per month with a $50 deductible if your claim is damage related. No deductible for other claims.
Me, I use Amex card to buy my phone. I get double the warranty and 90 days accident coverage. Oh, and cash back too. Good enough for me.

Lets see, a $20 case makes your phone larger, doesn't give it 100% protection against dropping it, or damaging it with water. Or for $10 a month (which I can cancel at any time) I can get protection from dropping my device, spilling water on it, or "accidentally" throwing it under a car to get it replaced due to bricking the device. Hm, seems like my $120 a year (which is nothing if you think about it being as it is paid at $10 a month) goes a lot further than your $20 case which *may* protect your device from damage while at the same time adding bulk and not really being a guarantee.
Yeah, I'll take my $10 a month insurance. Did you cancel your car insurance and instead just cover it with a thick foam too?
BTW, I'm still annoyed you never answered me in that previous thread about how much of an iFanboy I am

With the Best Buy plan you pay $10 a month, no deductible, and cancel at any time. So I could destroy the device in 3 months and get it replaced and in the end it will cost me $30. I can also then cancel my contract with them. Seems like a $30 well spent when you consider that this device is $500 out of contract.

I actually just did an insurance claim on my inspire. ***** pushed me in a pool and had my inspire in my pocket and fried it instantly. They will have you call an 800 number to process your claim, in which they will ask you questions on the condition of your phone. They will mail you a brand new, non refurbished phone in the mail, which takes a couple days to arrive in the mail. Once received, you will have to mail your original phone back using the same box your new phone came in. You have 10 days to send in your old phone before additional charges apply. A deductible of $125 will be charged to your account.

SPOBI. They always try refurbished devices first, if none are available then you may get a new one.
And technically cosmetic damage is not covered...usability has to be impacted. That's not to say you can't make a case for some software issue haha....
Whatever you do remember that you can only have 3 claims in any 12 month period.

Best Buy's Black Tie Covers all damage that affects the usability of the phone. So not just some light scratches unless you prove it keeps you from using your phone properly. It does not cover loss, theft, or total submersion in water (how that's supposed to proven, I dunno). The phone is sent out as a "rapid-exchange" where you'll have a refurbished phone in your hands in 3-5 business days.
Before the new rapid-exchange system, it used to be that if the phone was not cost effective to fix, they would tell the store to give you a brand new one. This is no longer true as of recently.
EDIT: The phone does have to be purchased at Best Buy.. unless it is an iPhone and you have a receipt showing it was purchased new within 30 days.

Actually best buy gives you brand new phones. If they have the phone in stock they gladly just swap it out if you can reproduce the problem right then and there. No refurbs and no deductible. I think it's about 9 or 10 dollars a month.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
It's store manager discretion if they swap it out with a brand new one at BBY. Actual SOP is send out to be fixed and the customer is offered a loaner phone. If it takes 30 days or the repair is not cost effective (total destruction of phone or severe water damage) then the phone is replaced with new device.
The rapid Exchange process mentioned above is rolling out in waves by carrier at BBY. Currently only VZW is all rapid exchange, ATT is still 'send for service'.
The misinformation floating around astounds me...

What is the best insurance for at&t HTC One X

there are many who can offer insurance for the at&t One X ........I am wondering who provides the best insurance to cover the device ? ? ?
It depends where you get your phone from. That's why I'm getting mines from Best Buy. $9.99 per month and covers everything except lost or stolen without a deductible and as many claims as you like. My wife dropped her gs2 and it was replaced 2 days later.
I used ensquared for my other phones. $65 or $75 for one year and covers everything and up to 3 claims per year with a $75 deductible for the first one and $25 after that

Ensquared's deductible is $75 plus an ADDITIONAL $25 for second and third claims... so that'd be 100 bucks a pop if you had to replace your phone more than once. At least, that's what it is currently on their website... don't know if you were perhaps grandfathered in under older, more generous terms.
$75 deductible fee per claim
All 2nd and 3rd claims carry a $25 additional deductible for admin charges.

I only know this because I was checking them out earlier today! Just curious, has anybody actually had to file a claim (or multiple claims) with ensquared? It seems like a pretty good deal, but I am extremely weary of any insurance/warranty type service - it's been my (limited) experience that they try to squirm out of their contractual obligations. As they say: once bitten, twice shy.
I use the Best Buy protection.
- $9.99
- No deductible
- Doesn't cover loss or theft, but you can run it over with a car, and they'll replace it no questions asked.

FWIW, SquareTrade has a pretty good reputation, however there are some caveats ... for example, it's another 30 bucks for loss and theft coverage, which is included with the $99 2 year Ensquared coverage. SquareTrade's warranty is also only good for 1 claim with a $599 limit(I think), where as Ensquared covers up to 3 claims with a per claim limit of $1000.
Ensquared sounds like a really good deal with the included loss and theft coverage, plus up to 3 claims. But you know what they say about things that sound too good to be true...
I'll never get insurance for the device unless I can't get a warranty.
I'm pretty careful with my electronics so accidental damage has never been an issue.
And I have AT&T/HTC if anything goes wrong with it for a year.
I got some GWG Wireless Protection plan. $80 flat for two years (25 months actually) and $50 deductible on the claim.
http://stars.wirelessprotectionprogram.com/tc/WPPParrot2YTCsAllStates.pdf
It's pretty sweet because now that it's paid for, I already count the money as spent, there's no monthly fee I'm stuck with. $80/25 = $3.20/mo. so it's better than any other insurance plan I've ever had on a phone. Claims can be filled out online I believe or I can just go into the store and they'll help me.
I recently discovered that, if I automatically pay my cell phone bill with my Wells Fargo credit card, they automatically enroll me in their cell phone insurance program. The coverage is up to $600 and only has a $25 deductible! You might check and see if your bank/credit card company has something similar!

Woah, hold on there.
You could get third-party insurance, such as SquareTrade or Ensquared. But you would NOT be able to get insurance from Best Buy if you bought the phone at an AT&T store.
(Of course, Best Buy also sells AT&T contract phones, and if you bought it there, you COULD get Best Buy insurance).
My question is this; if I buy a phone with contract from Best Buy, or Amazon Wireless, can I sign up for insurance from AT&T?
Yes. I added insurance on a phone I bought from Amazon on contract.

I have a friend that has nothing but good luck with Ensquared. Here's the story.
My friend bought an unlocked Galaxy S, and had it insured with Ensquared. A couple weeks after she buys the phone, the mic stops working. She gives them a call and complain, and they told her they will send her out a replacement phone BUT it won't be a Galaxy S, free of charge.
She waits a couple days, and they sent a Brand new LG Thrive (3D) phone and told her to go ahead and keep her old Galaxy S.
My friend then goes out and buy an unlocked Samsung Infuse, insured with Ensquared. The speaker doesn't work as it should. They then send out an BRAND NEW (unlocked) Galaxy S II, back when they were just released last year. It was worth at least $500 back then. They tell her to keep the Infuse, and again refused to charge her for the replacement.
Corporate Discount?
Slightly off-topic, but my company has a corporate deal with ATT, which gets me a % off my bill each month. But I also found out when buying the HOX that with my corporate discount, I can actually buy any phone off-contract at 50% off retail, which means the HOX would be $300 out of contract. I had no idea this was part of our discount and would have never known unless I asked since not ATT nor my company would ever volunteer the info. Anyway, if you have a company discount, check into what it gets you. For me, this makes going w/o insurance a lot easier.
Bought mine at best buy. There insurance is 10 a month with no deductible. If I'm not mistaken att was 8 a month with 100 deductible.

Nexus 4 Insurance

So where do I get an insurance for my coming Nexus 4. I;m kinda skeptical about the strength of the phone and need a backup is something happens.
Only from Shop
If you bought it from a third-party store, you'll have warranty from the shop.
If bought online, no insurance. Just buy a case, and don't damage it, it really isn't that hard if you take care of it and not throw it everywhere.

Honestly I will just do my best not to break it, and if I do, just buy a new one.

Yeah problem with squaretrade is that with the upfront fee plus deductible, you're almost at the price of a new phone. This probably goes for any insurance on this phone since it's relatively inexpensive.
Would like to add that square trade will have a 40% off sale for black Friday. See their Facebook page to sign up. Makes it a more reasonable price. Now if only in can get a hold of a nexus 4 lol
If you buy from Google, you don't need a insurance. Just be careful of accidental damage which can be prevented if you pay attention.

Ohh thanks for the info. The website states $7/mo or $125 for 2 years. The only difference between the two is paying up front or monthly right (aside from the discount)? Or are you able to cancel at any time, say after a year? I'm contemplating on whether it's a good deal since there is a $100 deductible (wil there be tax added on?) and the value of the phone will go down overtime as well. But with the 40% black fri deal, I would probably get it .
Also... this only covers damage and not lost/stolen phones like Tmobile insurance right..?

Well I know for the lump sum one that if you cancel you get a prorated refund. I haven't found anything saying that you can't cancel the monthly plan but I would contact them to be sure.
The deductible shouldn't have any tax added. And yes it does not cover lost/stolen phones.
Usually I'm very careful with my phones but have dropped them from time to time. I did own an iPhone 4 for only 6 months though so still not sure about the longetivity of an all glass phone.hence contemplating square trade. But with the 40% off I would be looking at 175 if I do file a claim.
Another option I saw a fellow xda recommend is going threw werth Ave group. Its an actual insurance company(think auto, home, etc) they have a 50 deduct and covers theft. But know nothing about them
Would these insurance policies cover if the micro USB charging port on the phone gets messed up? it happen on my sprint OG Evo4G, the USB got completely separated from the board itself... (I have no clue how that could happen) and i had to go through my insurance to get it taken care of, (and shell out $100 for a replacement)
But how about if by accident the phone get bricked or something software related? Or if they battery doesn't charge good anymore and it needs to be replace?
If you bought it through T-Mobile, they have a $5 per month insurance policy ($20 deductible) for accidental damage. They also have an $8 per month policy (no deductible) that covers damage and theft. Beats the SquareTrade, even with the discount. I understand that most people probably got it through the Play Store but hope that helps anyone thinking of getting it through T-Mobile.
I personally got the $8 plan. I'll probably either cancel the plan or downgrade it to the $5 after I get a case and some screen covers.
I have a Citi Forward Visa card, for free (no annual fee either) you get $250 of cell phone insurance ($50 deductible). I just filed a claim on my Galaxy Nexus after the screen cracked when I dropped it. Seems pretty straightforward and can't beat the price. It covers breakage & theft.

I'm assuming you have to buy the phone with the card in order for it to be covered? Really wish I knew this before paying with my Discover Card.

If u crack the phone with TMobile insurance there is a deductible it only covers non accidental stuff without the deductibles but if its not super cracked they won't charge u just Dont mention it ... U think if we buy from play store we can still get it insured from TMobile? I have the 8 dollar plan on my line for my One S right now Dont know what's gonna happen with that Lol

I'm pretty sure Premium Handset Protection will work with the Nexus 4. I don't see why it wouldn't, considering there are NO differences between the Play Store and T-Mobile version.

Thanks for mentioning this, I have the same card and I bought the phone using the card. Do you know how long it is covered? I can't find a link to the information on the site.

If you buy from Google, you don't need a insurance. Just be careful of accidental damage which can be prevented if you pay attention.

This. You just have to be really careful.

Canadian Phone Insurance, What's Everyone Using?

So, I'm liking this phone. So much so I don't want to be without it. Im given a couple options for insurance, and im wondering what people have gone with. I myself have 2 Options:
FutureShop Product Exchange Plan:
Pros - Unlimited Exchanges
- I work at FutureShop, So no BSing around.
Cons- Doesn't Cover Accidental, Lost or Stolen
Price: 200-250$, 0$ deductable
Ensquared Insurance
Pros - Cheap as Hell
- All Phones replaced Fast, and From what I understand, most are new
- Covers Lost, Stolen, Accidental
Price 99$, 99$ deductable.
So really it comes down to if I think Ill break it, or whatever.
Ensquared looks like the no brainer decision to me. For a total of $200 you pay for the insurance & a deductible. The 1st option looks more expensive for the insurance even if you don't file a claim.

Yea, I know. However, FutureShop has over the counter, Brand New in Box EVERYTIME Phones. I'm just stuck and dont want to buy both, cause that would be overkill.
I went with Fido Device protection plan. They use Asurion, as do Bell, telus, and rogers. I just had to go through a claim with them. While the customer reps sound nice and all. The waiting time for a replacement was huge even though they mentioned next day replacements. I had to pay 10$ on my monthly plan plus 120$ deductible. My phone finally shipped after a week, will receive it on coming tuesday due to holidays in between. Really hope it's not a refurb or faulty phone.

Interesting, I went with the Telus protection. 8 bucks a month and $150 deductible and can be used twice a year. Didn't know of any other decent options. Just didn't want to get ****ed like I did when I smashed the screen on my imported S3.

If you havent purchased the phone already, purchase it from a Wirelesswave or T-Booth store in the malls, its $100 and covers you for 2 years, it doesnt cover any of the accidentals, but if you never have to use the warranty you get all of your money back at the end of your 2nd year.
