Long time, No see - G Tablet General

Hey guys. Been gone a couple weeks now after returning my unit. Couldn't justify $400 for the problems. I'm still on the prowl for an outlet item that I'd be a little more willing to mod, etc. So (as I'm sure everyone is thinking) if you know of one from the outlet, let me know. They don't seem to have them now, or the past few days. One thing I did discover during my absence...don't hold your breath for the Notion Ink Adam. Been following those threads for a while and it looks like another Archos fiasco over there. People are lit up today.
Would anyone mind giving me a brief high level overview of what's been done the past couple weeks? I'm going to try to start catching up, but the overview would be nice.

I lucked out and bought one from a Sears in Phoenix a few weeks ago for $279 plus tax. I tried most of the roms and for the past week I have been using the VEGAn-tab build and this puppy is screaming now. There are some issues still but they will be resolved soon. My only complaint is the screen. I plan on changing it to Pixel Qi (especially after the Notion Ink adam disaster yesterday) or some other better netbook screen. Still looking at the issues to get this done but I'm willing to tear mine down and put a better screen in it to help everyone else that can't stand the viewing angles.

How much are the Qi screens running? If I can pick this unit up for $300, then I definitely wouldn't mind upgrading the screen, although my soldering skills suck.

Unfortunately they are going for about $300 ( more than what I paid for my G.) There is someone on the thread where the G is disassembled with pictures saying he connected the Qi on it and it did work but the size of the screen is a little off and the case would need to be modified. I hope he can post some pictures of his experiment.

Ummmm...maybe when the market becomes saturated enough to get one off e0bay. Does sound like a cool project though.

[UPDATED] Quality Control / Reliability Poll

I figured I would get an updated reliability poll going since many people are getting their TF and docks now.
Many of you have reported multiple issues with their device. Please vote for ALL options that apply to your situation.
Thanks and vote away!
There's no poll to vote in that I can see.
Edit: there she is.
fail!!!!!!
It's up guys. It just takes a while to get it created. For some reason, the post comes up before the poll is completed.
Light leak and creakiness here. Not sure if I should RMA or not considering I could receive one with issues that are worse.
Light leakage, dust under the screen, very small gap between display and bezel and creakiness here
The question is whether you will keep in spite of the defects.

I had the following:
Light Bleed: Not even sure it is avoidable with this type of screen.
Screen wasn't flush with the housing on the right center inside.
2 dead pixels.
The screen was off center or skewed. Kind of like an old CRT monitor that you had to mess with to center.
The back has some give but I'm not sure its an issue. Its wide, weight seems evenly distributed and it doesn't seem frail or weak.
I returned mine to the vendor for a replacement due to the off center screen and dead pixels. I only hope that the replacement doesn't suffer from the same issues. I should know by the middle of next week.

Unfortunately I'm out of time to get it replaced by the store where I purchased it and ASUS Italy repair facilities still can't accept any RMA for the TF101.
The tablet itself works fine so I'll just wait some time until they'll have solved most of their HW production issues, then I'll submit a RMA ticket.
It is alarming that the vast majority have some king of issue. This is really not common for Asus based on other products they sell. They're actually considered one of the most reliable manufacturers of all.

Only problem with saying the vast majority have some issue is this may not be true or any real indication seeing as internet community behaviour is such that people post to moan when they've got problems and less likely to scream and shout about a perfect device as they're more than happy playing with it doing other things. Just saying that's all. I will have my TF bundle Friday night when I collect it so will be able to see if it's got any issues I notice but if it's perfect I won't be posting to say how great it is if it's perfect I'll be too busy enjoying it lol
Mine was dead right out of the box. Wouldn't even power on. I returned it and am now waiting for my amazon preorder to come. I am so glad i did'nt cancel that. If that one has problems, i'm gonna wait for the samsung
Question, does the build quality matter where the tf was made. I don't have my tf yet but I seen in a video that the box of one tf said "Made In China."
Were everybody's tf made in China?
Maybe this can determine where the bad eggs are coming from.

My main issue was the dock, but after receiving a dock firmware upgrade everything works flawlessly. Once HC 3.1 hits, it will be the best tablet ever.
I am going to refrain from voting for a few days, aside from one SOD I've had zero problems with either the tablet or the dock so far, I will wait a few days though before voting.
I understand that there is a huge bias towards those having problems as those that don't are less likely to report. However, such a poll can be helpful in indicating the majority of the problems people are having. It is alarming, still, that there is such a high disparity between those without problems and that do. I was expecting, well, hoping, that it wouldn't be this bad.
doron: They're all made from the same location/plant I'm sure. That's not the issue.
and now my housing separation is getting worse. first it was all tight and no creaks, then creaky and squishy on the left side (the lower left corner, could be squeezed). a day later the right bottom corner is squishy, but not as bad as the left.
last night the left side has increased to up to half the left side being slightly separated.
i'm almost 93.269% sure this thing's going back... if it does i'll have a dock and skin for sale at a pretty good price.
as reliable as their laptops are rated it's actually disappointing to hear all these mfg problems with their tablet. it's not like this is their first tablet.
I'm debating on sending mine in.
What we really need is an official announcement from Asus stating "yes, the first batch had manufacturing issues but the next batch is better. If you are experiencing XXX (IE: Light Leaks) Then please send it back for a full replacement"
I too have light leakage and my backing is lose around the bottom where the dock goes. It bubbles a bit. My dock also doesn't want to stay connected when the trackpad is in use (firmware coming i hear) so...
I know Asus responds to a few of these posts and all but a total PR about the issues would be far better than 100's of reviews stating "X Problem" and then people just overall assume the product is poorly built...which it is currently.
I do love it tho, but next one released with a keyboard at a reasonable price might find me as a buyer and Asus might find this one on the way back for a full refund.
My SD card won't eject. I feel it springing in a bit when I push it in, but it doesn't pop out.
Not a HUGE issue, but a definite QC failure. I may check with BB in a couple weeks to see if they have any stock and exchange it, but if not, it's only a minor issue. I slapped a 16GB card in there and I rarely remove it. I'll mostly use the USB ports and full size SD card slot in the dock.

[Q] Anyone else hugely disappointed with the build quality?

So I was dying to get one of these on launch day and when I finally received mine, it had a squeaky left bezel, bad light bleed on the left and right, and minor light bleed on the other sides. The squeaking and light bleed was so bad that there was no way I was keeping it.
Luckily, I received another one the next day. The bezel on this one was good, no squeaks and the light bleed was very tolerable. It also has a couple of specs of dust under the screen but they haven't really bother me. So I returned my first one and have been using this one for two weeks now and have been loving it.
I then received the 32GB version today. The bezel has no squeaks but there are multiple specs of dust under the screen and there are also a couple of tiny chips in the glass. WTF!!
I really wanted the 32GB version but after my experience with the three tablets I am just sticking with the one I've been using and returning it. I think $400 is the max I want to spend on a product with horrible quality control. I'm even worried that the one I've been using is gonna start developing problems over the next few months! I'm also afraid of exchanging because there is a good chance the replacement will be the same or worse than the original.
It's just very frustrating. I can't remember any other product I've purchased that had so many quality control issues right out of the box. Anyone else feel the same way I do?

At least your touch screen is working! (link)
Anyway, the best way to have ASUS improve their quality control is probably returning all the bad ones (so that they are financially concerned), as well as calling their customer service number to complain.
Sorry to hear you have had problems but I must say my experience (thus far) has been excellent my unit feels solid, no dead pixels, no dust and minimal light-bleed, just a touch at the bottom and the right side that is only even slightly noticeable on rare occasions.
Only thing I'm not 100% happy about is the battery life, the dock seems to drain like a tap! Maybe it will settle down after a few cycles and I think a firmware fix is in the pipeline for this.
mine is fine. No issues with build quality here. First batch model by the way.
If u wanna see some serious light bleed try a ipad2 under full brightness. Its extremly worse than my transformer

Very true. Both r ips. U won't get iphone/galaxy quality led screen here. Ips is really good quality, best among tablets, but its still lcd based, with backlight. U won't get a 10.1" samoled screen for 400 lol. My light bleed is only barely noticeable in pitch dark, with 60% brightness.

Xreflection, got mine from Walmart last Wednesday when they had that brief selling period (after 6 previous cancellations I received from various places)...arrived 'next day' on Friday. It's great! No screen bleeding, pixels are fine, case is fine - I'm well pleased!
And Yelp I was a little worried, too. But, it's great...so snappy on the wifi where I know having iPad1 had a lot of wifi problems that I returned it- I don't with this-happy customer! Have fun!
I returned my second TF due to a speaker failure issue. I returned my first due to the speaker volume out of sync issue. Im not sure if its a problem with pieces from same batch. Im scouting again online hopefully to get a peice from subsequent batches maybe which wont have the issue. I like the experience on the device though

Very happy with mine! I have slight light bleed at the bottom left but that's the only issue. Doesn't bother me though as I only see it when it's a black screen which isn't very often.
Mine is fine and I am loving it. The toshiba folio 100 was a pig and deserved all the bad press.
This is a million times better user experience for me and lots of the apple fans are complaining too, if they can't get it right with ips, who can?
If asus keep developing and get a decent quad core with ips to market, then i will defiantly upgrade.
Apple ips light bleed
Another apple light bleed story
I can see why you might be disappointed, Its not perfect, but it is the best one i have used.
I bought two TF's and one dock. The first TF went sleep and never woke up. I sent it to ASUS, they still have it. My second is running great. No issues with it whatsoever. The dock works great also. I'm very happy with the build quality of all three items.

How I got my perfect Infinity

Thought I share how I got my "perfect" Infinity.
My first one had a couple of dead pixels smack in the middle of the screen. And it was slow as hell. Every couple of seconds, it would slow down... even after the update. I read online about I/O issues and how the JB update would improve it. But that dead pixels in the middle of the screen was a deal breaker. I returned it and ordered a new one. This one was great. No dead pixels. And much snappier after the update. But I started to notice "clicking" noise when I pressed the edges... I read about how the Gorilla Glass was supposed to have some flex... So I pressed on. But it got worse and worse. I even called Asus and the tech guys said, it was supposed to have some flex and some clicking was normal. But if I felt like the screen was separating, then I should return it. How was I supposed to tell the difference? Only heaven would know. In fact, every other aspect about the tablet was fine. Snappy, no light bleed, no HDMI probelm. audio worked.... But the clicking was like plague... It kept spreading! to the entire top edge! Well, I returned it. Ordered a new one. The third one was good build except it had DIRT under the screen. I was about to accept my fate. I told myself, "it's just some dirt..." But it was on the top left corner where the tabs are on browsers! which meant I kept seeing the dirt every time I looked at the screen. So. I got a new one. My 4th one was perfect. Good build. Absolutely no clicking. Very snappy. The difference between the first three and this in terms of smoothness was night and day... Audio out worked. No light bleeding. No dead pixels. No dirt. and I tested the HDMI out... no picture on my screen. I was like @#$%^@$%^. I got a new cable and it was the cable.
The serial numbers. I do not remember the first one. The last three were all C6 lines but progressively higher numbers.
So if anyone is out there with a less than perfect tablet, it's your money. Keep exchanging it until it make you happy.
Where did you buy this tablet from?
When will people learn.
You would really go through 4 tablets to get a good one - Forget that . . I returned one, and I think I am done. Asus is going to lose money on this model too because of all the returns.

Return or not to return?

Hey XDA. Have had an issue for awhile and wanted to know what you guys think.
Ok. I have the Note for almost a month now. During this time it has shut itself off 3 times and has restarted itself a few times. All of which happened with around 78% battery. Is this a reason to return it? Still have like 10 days left on my 30 day return thing with bestbuy.
I got mine at best buy on august 20, probably the same time you did. Not once have I had even a force close on an app, never mind a restart. Only turned it off maybe 5 times since I had it, and no issues here. Sounds like a defective unit to me, if it were me, I would take fu'l advantage of that return policy while you can.

That is the same exact date that I got mine. And I agree with you. Just worried as to what they will say considering I started off with the Transformer Tf300 then returned it to pre order the Transformer TF700. Then I went through (3) of the TF700's all with problems. Then decided to say screw you ASUS and got the Note. Which I really like .
Just worried they will say they can't help me since the problem isn't something I can recreate . It just happens.
Its worth returning things to Bestbuy just to watch the constipated look they get on their faces like you are some sort of murderer.
They always ask you, why are you returning it with this clipped, suspicious sound in their voices. Last time I told them I didn't like how it smelled with a completely straight face.

I hate to have to return things, not to mention I have nearly an hour drive too get to best buy, I would worry that it could get worse. I guess it depends on how much it bothers you. I hear what you say about the employees there, sorry but true, when I went to get mine, no one there even heard it. Yeah so far they have been surprisingly helpful with everything so far. But up until now I could recreate or show them(dead pixels) what was wrong. This problem I can't show them and they will have to take my word for it.
Well, they open in like 5 hours for me so I may give it a shot:good:
I think you should return it, they probably had hundreds of Asus' s returned because of their numerous problems and are probably used to it. The Note on the other hand is the most stable tablet that I have owned and its never switched off on me.
Considering how much you've paid for it, don't hesitate to put up a verbal fight if you have too, start off nicely though...
I returned my note today and they accepted it with no problems or constipated looks

Ok, so I exchanged my Note 10.1 for a new one today and the one I got now seems to be okay except the insert around the camera has a spot at the top where it can be pushed in slightly. Like it sticks out a little. Not alot. What to do what to do. Really getting tired of exchanging things. Sure best buy is also. So unsure what i'm going to do. Maybe I need to stop being so picky and except the fact that most devices will have some small flaws:silly:
Maybe you should weigh the effort of deciding with the effort of actually making the return to how much the defect you have with the tablet (or what ever) is actually effecting the quality of the usefulness of the product.

I hear ya. But for 500 bucks it better be as close to perfect as possible. So i returned it today and got another one. So far everything on the outside is fine. FYI Bestbuy will at some undetermined point stop allowing you to return iteme without notice before hand. They will just tell you that you can not make any more returns for 90 days. What they don't say is when the 90 days start and what events can extent the 90 days or that it is possible the the 90 days may be much longer.

build quality issues still present

I purchased my first tf700 from Newegg 5 or 6 weeks ago. The build was excellent. No screen separation issues and little light bleed. I ended up RMAing the device due to a weird screen issue where it was randomly tapping/swiping by itself every now and then.
I just received my new device which has an 80 serial number, and the screen is separating. If you sight down the edge of the top you can see that it actually bows out quite a bit toward the middle, and it clicks when I press it. SO FRUSTRATING!
Newegg's RMA procedure is as painless as it can be for an online purchase, but I think I'll return this one for a refund and purchase from Best Buy so I don't have to spend the foreseeable future shipping Infinities back and forth.

Guys, there are like a thousand threads on these same issues already here, each with perfect solutions for dealing with the situation should it arise. Must we have yet another negative TF700 thread? My 700 is perfect, and so are the majority of people's as well. Continuing to populate the forums with these types of threads though does nothing but scare away potential developers from wanting to shell out the cash to pick up one of these tabs and develop awesome roms for us!
I do not mean to sound rude, nor am I flaming, but please, mods lock this thread before it spirals into something worse.
I agree with theanarchist that this is the same thread that we've all seen. But I also don't think most peoples tabs Are perfect. Some (like me) are still trying to find a perfect one And some have just accepted what they have and have given up. Others (like you) managed to get a perfect one.

Mine's not perfect, clicking near the hdmi port and you can click it from a good portion up towards the middle of the screen. I personally gave up on Asus, though hearing that there are people that have indeed perfect ones makes me wish I had exchanged it. I was hesitant because I had already returned a tf300 (screen issue) and then later the Prime that I had replaced the tf300 with. I had only returned the Prime to get the tf700, as I was pretty frustrated I couldn't get the gps to work EVEN with the dongle Asus sent me. I didn't have any wifi issues really nor any screen clicking issues with the Prime and though I like the infinity the screen clicking annoys me. Wondering if I should rma it directly to them, just don't want to get a different tab back or been in a worse situation as a result.

There was an earlier thread that theorized that the build issues were being addressed in the more recently built devices. I posted to show that even with the more recent 80 serial number devices, the same issues are present on at least a percentage of tf700s.
I certainly have no agenda. I'm on my second Infinity, which will unfortunately also be going back. The first one had some extreme screen separation on the right hand side. It was an C06 serial number. The one I'm on now, my second is a C80 serial number. The screen is good, with just a slight clicking in one spot on the right hand side. I'd live with it. However the light leaking out onto the screen along the bottom and right side from the LEDs is very very noticible.
I won't give up. I really love everything about the TF700 except for the build quality issues that I have experienced. I think the OP has a valid point in saying that the issues are not fixed yet. When my second unit came, I was psyched to see the serial number on the box said C80. I was very disappointed that it too has issues.
I think...
I think the screen seperation can be because of the humidity. Where do u live?

I don't think it's humidity. I live on the west coast of the US. Pretty dry here. I noticed a curve in the glass along the top of the screen as soon as I took it out of the box and removed the skin/wrapper. It's noticeably bowed out in the middle of that edge.
I just wanted to chime in to say that this is my 2nd C8. The 1st had a June build date and it came with the .22 firmware. I exchanged that one for this 2nd C8 which came with the .26 firmware and a 20120720 build date.
The 1st infinity had power and volume button issues and sharper than normal edges all around. I can't find anything wrong with the build on this second C8 other than the haptic feedback is set really low. (Does vibrate when power on)
I'm rooted and have the dmclient froze in titanium backup while I read up on NV flash. (Guarding against a forced OTA update) I made the mistake of applying the .30 OTA to soon last time.

Glad to hear that. Hopefully, 3rd time will be the charm. I really do LOVE this tablet, I just want one that's solidly built and works.
Agreed. I don't see how humidity is going to affect Corning's Gorilla Glass 2. Seriously don't see this being a factor at all.
I suppose I am one of the luck ones as well, no discernable bleeding edge light and completely flat screen. Of course, I bought the 64GB model from BB online, and it already have .26 on it when it arrived.
I too just returned my c8 version today that suffered from light bleed, mushy/sticky power and volume buttons, separating screen which also had sharp 90 edges. The one I just picked up is a night and difference from the first one. This one is a c9 version and other than a little light bleed the construction is solid. It doesn't even appear to be the same tablet....its like the first one was a cheap knock off. Another thing I am noticing with this new one is that the speed of touch feedback is so much faster than the C8.
I did decide to purchase the extended warranty this time around...my experience with the prime has left me jaded and there is no way I'm going to be left holding a dud.
With that said, I suggest if possible to keep on returning them until you find a good one...they do exist!
If Asus can't be persistent with their perfection...Be persistent with the returns!
F me! Just noticed this one is creaking like an old rocking chair, its on the left side by the hdmi port.
Today, I swapped out my first C7 after owning it for a week and received a C8 as a replacement. It amazes me the differences between the two.
For my particular devices, the differences were:
C7 pros: The construction was very solid. I kept reading horror stories about screen lift, creaking, etc. and mine felt solid like a tank. No light bleed issues either.
C7 cons: It suffered from severe I/O issues. Trying to download something from the market would grind things to a halt until the download and install finished. The Browser lagged a bit as well........as did moving around the launcher or clearing items from the recents menu . I returned it because there was a spec of dust under the screen which just really bothered me.
C8 pros: It feels like they put better quality internals in this one! There have been none of the i/o issues, lag, or stutters. Everything is very responsive and snappy. From a software usability standpoint, this feels like a completely new device.
C8 cons: The physical build quality is definitely not as high as the first. There are spots around the edges of the glass that feel "squishy". There is also a bit more lightbeed but i would not call it bad by any means.
For now, I am going to keep the C8 because the performance difference alone is worth it. The minor physical build quality issues aren't bothering me enough yet to risk giving up the performance.
One trend I seem to have noticed after reading all these reviews is that the build date does not seem to have much correlation with physical build quality. However, it does seem that more recent models may be using higher quality internal components contributing to noticeable performance gain.
These are just my observations.
