My friend has an iphone4, I have a Captivate; In the same location, 3g, Edge, and WiFi speeds are always faster. Why?
What do you mean?who's speeds are faster yours or his? Wifi >3g>edge as far signal goes. Speed of the phone depends on a lot of things such as what resolution things are displayed at, how the phone processes the web pages, size of the cache, android especially can depend on multi tasking that is going on.
Short answer is there is no easy answer two captivates can display web pages at completely different speeds based ob settings alone.

I have this in my review post but wanted to call it out separately to see what others are experiencing. My G2’s best speedtest.net score is 10289 down and 1582 up. The average is in the mid-8’s down and about 1.2mb up. The best score on the G2X is 7013 down and 1263 up. Average is in mid-6’s down and 1mb up. I took the tests at the same time and after the G2X was loaded with the identical apps and configuration that was on my G2. I know both sets of numbers are good compared to some areas of the country, but if the percentage of degradation is the same everywhere the slower the connection the worse the G2X will perform compared to other T-Mobile 4G phones. I'm guessing it's either LG's implementation of the radio hardware and/or software. I'm hoping it's the latter which can be fixed via an update.
I got 8 at tmobile where the myt4g only got 6... Id say its good..
different days have different uses and network clog, one days worth of testing wont prove enough.

They were done side by side. So any network congestion would have effected both equally. They're also configured identically, unlike units tested in a store which are stock.
Wow you guys are lucky, I was getting 3 down on the G2 and am getting about 4.5-5 down on the G2x
7 down seems fine enough to me on a mobile phone.
Anyways point being i'm seeing higher speeds locally on my 2x compared to my G2, so who knows.
I get anywhere from 4-7 MB/s down and a solid 2.5-3 Up on my MT4G in vegas..
I'd check my G2x speeds but I boxed it up and it's going back because backlight bleed issue is worse than most I've seen here. Hopefully the next will be a little better.. I can live with a little, not a lot.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't really care if my phone is pulling 2mbps or 10mbps. When I'm surfing the web, everything loaded quickly. When I installed Dungeon Defenders, the update was done downloading in around 5 minutes. Considering it was over 100mb, that's more than acceptable to me.
Does tmo charge extra for 4g like sprint or veriz?
That would upset me if i paid for it. If not then........

No they don't...
My Lg G2X is getting on average 7mb DL and 1.5mb UL. My MyTouch 4G is getting 6mb DL and 1.3mb UL. Same apps, time and location. The LG G2X is faster.

But Its also capped at 5GB and then goes to dial up speed after the 5GB, where as on Sprint %100 unlimited.
Oh c'mon.......
I'm starting to agree with the "I turn my phone on vibrate and won't cut my chicken" guys.
This thread is just ridiculous. Seriously are you TRYING to find things to complain about. These silly data rate comparison threads come up every time a new official rom is released for any phone as well. One guy says it's far worse than before, the next guys says it's the best ever!!! The point is, unless you want to continue your little test in 100 different locations at 100 different times of the day, you're not doing a reasonably analytical test. This is why no two people will ever agree on the results of one persons "scientific" test.
I'm sure the results are "real" to you, but they don't really matter to anyone else.

First, here a quote from the TechCrunch review:
A quick note on the network speed. The G2x is, like the G2, kitted out for T-Mobile’s “4g” HSPA+ network. The G2 got around 9Mb/s down in my neighborhood, with around 3Mb/s up. The G2x reliably goes at half that rate – between 3 and 5 megabits down and around 1.5 up. Not exactly the lightning-fast advertised speeds, but they were fairly consistent and for all the usual uses it was quite fast – loading pages and games in the browser or downloading apps, that is to say.
So, I'm not crazy. And to expect T-Mobile's self-proclaimed flagship to outperform an older slower phone (the G2) isn't an invalid expectation. Having a super fast processor and a slower connection nets you about the same performance as a slower processor and faster connection when streaming video. My G2 actually plays Hulu faster than my G2X over 4G. On top of that, the G2X is silly fast over Wi-Fi so it's not the phone, it's the implementation of the radio. I like the phone but I'd really like to see it reach its full potential. If you (or anyone else) are fine with it the way it is then you should really have no interest in this thread anyway.
It's Tmobile... not the phone.

Well i think any potential buyer wikl check out this thread. My vibrant was horrible with reception.
My old g1 got double the signal.
So ill report my findings tomorrow and hope its better than my vibrant.

I have the G2x for the 14 day trial period to test it out and see if the network suits my needs (possibly switching from Verizon). I never really speed tests this often, but I feel it is necessary so I can get an idea of the speeds based on my frequent locations. Verizon is too slow in some key areas for me.
I was surprised to see people talk about 7mb down on T-Mobile, because on the G2x for the few days I've had it, I have yet to see more than 1.5mb down. This is in all different areas and with a full 4G signal. One time a full signal on 4G was much slower than 1 bar of 4G - that never made sense to me? The phone stays on 4G pretty much all the time and even with a full 4G signal, I average about 500kbs down.
I'm hoping it's the phone/software... because if the network performs better than what it does now, I would be much more impressed with the network and would be more inclined to switch. It seems to work okay with basic browsing, but at times it does show that it's slow (like when downloading apps from Market).
Well coming from evolution on sprint I am 100% happy. No BS I was getting .12mbps on sprint 3g and on the rare occasion I got 4g I would avg around 6. But 4g was really limited in the dfw area and battery life was garbage. I'm running cm7 with stock kernal.
With the g2x for the first few days I'm getting 5-7mbps with peaks of 11. And the battery life is immensely better. I haven't transferred my acct from sprint because I wanted to test and so far I'm blown away.

I posted this on another forum, and the conclusion was that flash support is why I've found that nearly all web pages load faster on my wife's iPhone 4 than my Thunderbolt.
I'm not really satisfied with that answer... does anybody else notice that there is a delay before web pages actually load? The delay is usually a second or more, and occurs in all the browser's I've tried so far. On my wife's iPhone 4, there is absolutely no delay on loading most sites. I've put the phones side to side, and gone to a variety of websites doing my best to press the load button at the same time. iPhone always loads the page initially quicker than the Thunderbolt.
After the second or so delay, web pages load pretty quick, but that delay really gives the feeling of a sluggish browsing experience.
Any way to remedy this? I've tried turning off flash support, but had no luck.
UPDATE: Made a quick video comparison. It's obviously NOT a well-controlled experiment . I'm sure there is a couple millisecond difference between finger pushes on each phone, but either way the iPhone loads the page quicker. I just recorded whitehouse.gov, since neither phone has been on that site AFAIK since we got them. But I assure you that the same difference happens on most other websites. I'm in a well-covered 4g area, and speed tests the past couple of weeks ranged from 10 - 20 mbps down and 6-15 mbps up, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm using the Miren browser in this video, but I've also tried Oper HD, dolphin lite, and the stock browsers.

It's not a 'problem' per se. I love the phone. I'm just wondering a) if anybody else has noticed this, and b) if anybody has any alternative explanations for why browsing, at least for me, doesn't seem blazing fast... particularly since I'm on the 4G LTE network, and the only other phone I've had experience with (iPhone) seems to have a faster browsing experience despite being limited to 3G.
The stock browser is sluggish. I have noticed the same thing with the browser hanging but only on sense roms. I switched to miren browser and all is well.

I have noticed this. I'm rooted but on the stock ROM and I see significant slowness in the browser. Sometimes the browser will not load a page at all and the bar will stay at around 75% complete and never go any further. If I close the browser and try again it will sometimes completely load but most times I just have to wait and try it later. This is not what I was experiencing when I first got it.
None of my browsers fail to begin loading the page immediately after I hit "go" :/

Coming from the Archos and ViewSonic tablets, plus Galaxy S phones, I got in the habit of only using Dolphin Browser.
My TBolt is fine in Dolphin Browser, and exceeds the Archos A70 that I use every day. I try to maintain low expectations, that way I can be positively surprised.
The stock browser works very smoothly for me on cm7, and I'm not overclocked. You could always try dolphin or opera.
xScope is my favorite for speed and features.
I only use the stock browser for Hulu now.

If my GFs iphone loaded pages more quickly than my Tbolt on 4G, I would definitely consider that a problem. What are your typical 4G download speeds? I get between 14-20 Mbps on speakeasy.net (stock browser)

Going to try and take a video of the comparison if I can tonight so you guys can judge.

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what ROM(GB or ICS) thats best for hotspot usage? Also, if its not too much to ask if you guys can post a screenshot of the average speeds you are getting on your laptop/tablet/netbook when you are hooked up?
Thanks guys
I really think this is way too subjective in nature. The main reason I say this is because it doesn't depend on the ROM so much as the following:
1) 3G or 4G speeds by the user
2) Reliability of the network the user has
3) Where the person is (maybe if (s)he moves from the basements to upstairs, the speeds will be faster)
4) What apps are open on the phone
5) Distance from laptop to phone
etc,etc.
Anyways, aside from that, I'd like to point out hotspots are iffy on ICS ROMs, I've found anyways. Between the GB ROMs I never found a difference between any of the ROMs. On AOKP ICS I managed to get hotspots working, no noticeable difference in speeds over GB. However, on AOSP EB and Hellfire it would never turn on. Never tried Genesis.
I was having slow downloads...I even tried complaining to Verizon saying my 3g was going faster than my 4g...they said I might be getting better 3g signal than my 4g...SO...I found this app I paid for and didn't notice much when I had my fascinate and tried it on my CHARGE...Iam noticing download times almost cut in half...iam not sure why...does anyone know of a better internet speed enhancer or notice it being faster when using this app?
simply tweaked 3.o...dressed in adw and other paid apps

I use network signal:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet
By the looks of that app it is more for signal than enhancement. .
Tweaked 3.0 and Transparent ICS 5.0 Beta
Yeah...I looked at it...this crusader app is working but not sure if it is because it only uses dedicated servers or if it is doing it some other way...like tasker ...or an app prioritizer...I was basically asking if I had been fooled...I don't know much about it
simply tweaked 3.o...dressed in adw and other paid apps
It looks like
1. It uses Google's DNS instead of Verizon's (or whoever the stock is) which is faster by virtue
2. Also creates a local "cache" of DNS lookups for your most frequently visited sites so they load even faster.
Am I wrong? Only scratching the surface? that's all I gleaned from the description.

i just upgraded to the Verizon update so my phone is stock with root. Ive noticed that wifi seems to perform very bad. My home internet connection is 5 megs up and 30 megs down, however while doing speed tests, i see speeds that bounce between 5 megs down to 17 megs down... but it never maxes out my internet connection like my iphone 4s. is this a rom issues? or hardware limitation? i think on 1 test only i saw it hit the full 30 megs down.... but it is very inconsistent on holding any speed...
next question, is i love Miui.. and i think i found a good rom on here. however there are elements from touchwiz that i would love to keep on miui like the calendar, calculator and music player(because of miui refusal to support playlists). Anyone know of a way to load these apps? is there a package available? Ive done a search with no luck... is it possible to load a deodexed rom and save the apps and restore them on miui? any one with any luck in this area let me know...

How are your measuring the speed? Try going to speakeasy.net/speedtest from your stock browser, you have to be flash enabled for that to work. The apps are horribly inaccurate to measure the internet speed, specially if you have a lot going on the background.
If you are using speedtest app , make sure you are on max performance setting and now max visual setting.
Remember that android is the master of all trades, it multifunctions. iphones focuses all its resources on the app you are running up front. And yes, internet speed, although strictly speaking has to do with the line and modem quality, a processor has to process the data, if something is keeping it busy, it will show a slower speed.
