Hotspot test screenshots - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what ROM(GB or ICS) thats best for hotspot usage? Also, if its not too much to ask if you guys can post a screenshot of the average speeds you are getting on your laptop/tablet/netbook when you are hooked up?
Thanks guys

I really think this is way too subjective in nature. The main reason I say this is because it doesn't depend on the ROM so much as the following:
1) 3G or 4G speeds by the user
2) Reliability of the network the user has
3) Where the person is (maybe if (s)he moves from the basements to upstairs, the speeds will be faster)
4) What apps are open on the phone
5) Distance from laptop to phone
etc,etc.
Anyways, aside from that, I'd like to point out hotspots are iffy on ICS ROMs, I've found anyways. Between the GB ROMs I never found a difference between any of the ROMs. On AOKP ICS I managed to get hotspots working, no noticeable difference in speeds over GB. However, on AOSP EB and Hellfire it would never turn on. Never tried Genesis.

[Q] How are your signal strength and 3G connection?

So I had one Nexus S (#1) for about a month and I have another Nexus S (#2) that I got few days ago.
#1 had terrible signal strength. Many times, it had 1-2 bars and I believe that it hardly had 4 full bars. Moreover, 3G connection would switch to EDGE constantly, especially when on the move (e.g. car). Download speed was kind of slow too. But since this was my first 3G device [I had old Windows Mobile phone], I wasn't quite sure if this was normal.
However, no random boot or many of the problems pointed out at XDA.. maybe except for back button that doesn't respond from time to time.
#2 has great signal strength. It stays usually at 4 full bars and I don't think I've ever got EDGE connection this time. Internet is very fast. It downloads app within a few second. No random boots or back button issue.
I bought my NS around end of December a week or so after it came out.
I usually get 3-4 bars reception, but where I live I think my reception is pretty crappy since I'm sort of on the edge of the coverage zone of the tower. It get's much better reception when I'm outside though. My DL speeds are crap however. I've yet to hit 3+mbps downloads or 1.5+mbps uploads
update your radio to KB3 (or KB1) see which one is better for you. you can find it on the dev forums
If I update the kernel (I was looking at voodoo) and use the stock rom, would this be considered rooting and not legal? I kind of want to use voodoo but I still want to keep the stock rom.

Voodoo is not a kernel, its a MOD that is embedded within a kernel. Most NS kernels feature Voodoo Color & Sound. I recommend Netarchy's 1.2.5a
The Nexus S is created to be rooted and hacked. XDA is a forum for people modding their phones with modified kernels/ROMs/etc, Google isn't going to knock on your door and arrest you for doing this. No need to be scared.

I guess I'll start looking into various ROMs but one of the focal point of purchasing NS was to use the stock..

stock update vs. CM 7.0.3 speed: why?

so I rooted my Inspire 4G, and downloaded the 1.84 radio rooted/SL from this forum. Then I installed CM7, 7.0.3. to be exact, and I noticed the speed tests were always slower. Last week, before I unrooted/restored to stock original, I had it rooted but before I got 1.84. I thought this time, after putting 1.84, CM7 should be as fast or faster. But it was not. I usually got good <200 pings, but download speeds of 2-2.9, uploads a little higher than one. With 1.84 rooted/SL, I've often gotten speeds higher than 7 to download, as on the last 4 tests, and have had quite a few download speeds higher than 10 with 1.84 stock rooted/SL. I'm in NYC. With CM7 today, I tried editing the APN settings per what I saw here on XDA, to no avail.
Can someone tell me why? What custom ROMS can I get which will be leaner AND faster than stock? I love CyanogenMod's layouts, themes, customization, but cannot stand the slower speeds. Could it be that custom ROMs are optimized for Desire HDs and not Inspire 4G's? I already tried CoreDroid, and not only was it slow, but had terrible battery life. I also want a ROM that has good maps, gps, wi-fi, as few bugs as possible. I really do want gingerbread, but it should be fast, as the Gingerbread man was. Another issue with CM7 was that sometimes, it would lose all data capabilities, the blue H and bars would go white, and when I'd try speed test, it would go to Houston TX for a server.
can I please get a response? I wanna use a custom rom, but I wanna know how to get a custom ROM which makes my phone faster.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you try some of the radios in the radio thread. With CoreDroid 6.8, I had good luck with radio Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 along with its RIL, although I can also say that radio Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M_release and its RIL seemed to give better battery life.
From what I've read, radio performance can be specific to geographic location. So what works good for me in AL may not work as well for you in NY.

Xoom using my phones data is slow

Im running a sammy fascinate with aokp rom, was previously on miui.......doesn't matter what rom IM on nor which radios I flash, this tablet can hardly function off my phones data.
I can't even get a simple 2 min YouTube vid to load, no matter how long I let it sit, I've tried using the aokp built in tether, and a couple off the market all with same results, I am able to browse the net, but its far slower than my phone.
Xoom is bone stock by the way, is there something I can do to boost this performance or does 3g die off as it's tethered?
Thanks.
Just to let you know, I tether with my 3g / HSDPA phone and the speed is great, very comparable to my phone.
Plays Youtube etc without issue - usually get around 250-300KBps.
Use the normal tethering option on my HTC phone.

Question regarding upgrading to Android 4.0/4.1

Hey I'm a noobie here but I wanted to ask if I upgraded to a 4.0/4.1 rom would I run into any performance issues? (lack of processing power/lack of ram, etc)
Also, should I expect a decrease in battery life or an increase?
Thanks!

edit: sorry I realized I posted this in the wrong section, can a mod please move it

I experienced lower battery life and performance issues.
From apps taking longer to launch to general lagginess of the rom. Other users have complaints about that in the various dev threads.
I started a thread in general about my downgrade to cm7. I have to say it makes the cappy feel new after using various laggy ics/jb roms.
But as with all things your mileage may vary. Not everyone complains about the upgrades.

Thanks, that was definitely something I was worried about. I actually recently started to use the Captivate because my old iPhone 3GS just ran terribly choppy (along with a much decreased battery life) with the newer iOS that was forced onto it so I don't want that kind of situation to reoccur.
I'm personally running the Slim Bean 2.1 rom which is Android 4.1. Other than the small bugs listed on their site, my phone is running butter smooth with no issues. As a moderate user to heavy user, my battery lasts pretty much the whole day and some. You just gotta follow the dev instructions and do your research.
I am currently running slim Bean, but I also ran slim ics. Which I felt that my phone has never run better on either of these two roms... Battery life was about the same for me between gb, ics, and jb.

One of the great features of ICS/JB is the battery settings option. From here, you can see what is draining your battery. When I flashed CM10 a few weeks ago, I noticed one of the widgets I used on CM9 was draining the battery big time (30-40%). So I disabled that widget and now I get battery life that is equal if not better then stock GB.
I've also ordred some 1800mAH batteries from Amazon which will definitely get me through a work day.
I'm currently Paranoid Android JB, and the battery life difference from 4.0 is negligible, but from 2.3, it's quite a change. As far as lag, it would be pretty bad if I was unable to OC it. Currently comfy at 1200MHz with the ondemand governor, and battery life is still better than GB.
I was stock GB for ages and had decent battery life. Then switched to CM 7.2 and had a horrible battery life. Switched to CM 9.1 and it isn't any better. So I ordered a 1800 battery, hopefully it will improve things.

Just as a mini update for anyone viewing this thread, i've tried both CM9 and Jelly Bean Lanight rom. Both have been pretty fast, haven't really seen any lag issues and battery is relatively the same.
ICS update to sgh-i897 captivate
I updated my ATT captivate SGHi897 to ICS recently from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22555425
I am bit novice here on ROM .version build etc. but its running 4.0.3 Build - IML74K eng.
I notice my captivate is now bit laggy in opening up cameraand some apps but not that significant.
Actually It has solved many issues when i was running gingerbread earlier with too many forceclose issues , choppy signal , calls dropping etc.
Also I noticed my network signal is much better and shows " H " instead of 3g earlier. I did not know captivate is compatible for H and not just 3g.
I did notice te browsing is much much faster than gingerbread. ginger bread was horrible than the previous OS.
I was bale to browse in the same places where I was not even getting any signal to make voice calls , the Signal reception is great with ICS now . Not sure how a OS can affect the signal reception.
over all i am happy with ICS on my captivate.
My battery is so awful, I already bought an 1800mAh battery but it didn't really seem to help

My wife runs cm9 loves it. Fastest ROM she's had. Swears by it. I noticed alot of roms only do 3g no 3g at home so it goes to edge. But cm9 let's her get 4g everywhere. I've been out of the scene since my cappy went swimming . I miss it very much! Great phone. Go cyanogen mod download gapps. You want galaxymtd btw.

The ICS browser has been reworked and made better. It is faster and a lot more stable than the GB browser. Signal quality could be due to the fact that the i9000 with ics has newer and better modems. Btw im looking at your link and i noticed that you flashed a rom from the i9000 forums. I would suggest that you flash a rom from i897 forums. Even though both phones have similar spec they are very different and that could be the cause of your lag.

[Q] Questions about performance and roms.

i just upgraded to the Verizon update so my phone is stock with root. Ive noticed that wifi seems to perform very bad. My home internet connection is 5 megs up and 30 megs down, however while doing speed tests, i see speeds that bounce between 5 megs down to 17 megs down... but it never maxes out my internet connection like my iphone 4s. is this a rom issues? or hardware limitation? i think on 1 test only i saw it hit the full 30 megs down.... but it is very inconsistent on holding any speed...
next question, is i love Miui.. and i think i found a good rom on here. however there are elements from touchwiz that i would love to keep on miui like the calendar, calculator and music player(because of miui refusal to support playlists). Anyone know of a way to load these apps? is there a package available? Ive done a search with no luck... is it possible to load a deodexed rom and save the apps and restore them on miui? any one with any luck in this area let me know...

How are your measuring the speed? Try going to speakeasy.net/speedtest from your stock browser, you have to be flash enabled for that to work. The apps are horribly inaccurate to measure the internet speed, specially if you have a lot going on the background.
If you are using speedtest app , make sure you are on max performance setting and now max visual setting.
Remember that android is the master of all trades, it multifunctions. iphones focuses all its resources on the app you are running up front. And yes, internet speed, although strictly speaking has to do with the line and modem quality, a processor has to process the data, if something is keeping it busy, it will show a slower speed.
