Can I root and flash a new ROM without an SD card? - G Tablet General

Do I have to have an SD to flash a new rom on the G? Mine will be here today but I won't get my SD card til the end of the week. I was hoping to wipe it and make it usable so I don't have a frustrating night playing with it.
Crap! This should have been in General, not in Development. Feel free to move it for my stupidity.

It has internal storage that mounts and looks like an sd card to the device. It's 16gb worth and you can use it to flash roms. So to answer your question, no you do not.

One caveat: If you flash to any mods, I would highly recommend having a microSD card on hand. Many of us have had issues where we get stuck in a reboot loop and the only way to re-flash is to use the microSD.
If you have clockworkmod, this is not a problem as you can have as many update.zip files as you want, and clockworkmod can just be directed to them.

Thank you roebeet. I am looking forward to putting TnT Lite on it. Is it possible to use the same card that I use in my Samsung Captivate just to flash it? I don't want to get things mixed up. I have another card on the way but not til Friday and I'm pretty sure I'll be disappointed with it stock.

Yes, that sdcard would be fine...

Couldn't one just open an adb shell and rename the zip as needed to flash whatever?

Not if you system is in a reboot loop - that's why I would recommend that anyone modding should have a microSD card on hand + a way to copy files to it from a PC.
Let's put it this way: you bought a $375+ device that you are now going to modify. Isn't it worth another 10 bucks (or less) to get a 2GB microSD as a backout in case it has problems?

Good thing I did. Everything went flawlessly at first and then after about an hour or so I rebooted and got stuck in a reboot loop. I think I'm ok now but we'll see. I really want to put the Tegra updates on there but am not feeling ballsy yet. I read too much about people having issues with it.
Thank you again to everyone who has helped and especially to you roebeet.

ROM's, Tools, or ROM's AND Tools, Should I?

Hey guys, I was curious about something. I'm not sure if many people use my ROMs, so I wanted to find out who does. Who thinks I should ONLY focus on things like kitchens and porting tools and stuff, etc.
Should I work on a second set of ROM's, instead of a Just2Clean, a JustStuffed or something. Something with lots of features and programs, setup the way I would set it up.
Or work on Just2Clean simply so that I can use it on my kitchens?
Judging from the past quality of your roms, i highly condone and encourage you to create a "JustStuffed" rom. The only person any rom is perfect for is it's creator, and people should realize that.
Keep working on Just2Clean and the new kitchen, though. By the way, is there a way to use Just2Clean with EBO? I can't figure out how to decompile it.
Your ROM's are great, but...I...I just got used to the feeling I'm running my own ROM. As fzzyrn said, a ROM is always best for its creator. Now I'm running a ROM created in your first kitchan and it is fine. Thanks for all your work whatewer you do
I've voted for these two.
Work on both ROMs and Tools? They all ROCK! I'm using your ROM right now and it's fast and stable!
If you made the JustStuffed, I'd use it. I like the stability and speed, but it's too stripped.
But do what you love to do and don't follow other people's suggestions.
Do what you want to do. That's the only thing i can say.

I'll have to remember to upload the raw kitchen files tonight. I haven't test it with every package, though, so you will probably have to solve a lot of multiple file errors.
Everyone else, thanks for the comments. Ok, I will release a Just2Stuffed!
Just tools. Start with a multiple scheduler calendar!
i am a very satisfied user of your superclean rom. thanks for you great work!
The ROM looks great, I just can't get any help with formatting the micro SD card and being able to run it...
But keep doing both!

b. mann, when you format the SD card are you formatting it to FAT32 and not just FAT?
Do a full format, *not* quick.
Then copy the "HERAIMG.nbh" file to the blank SD card. Follow instructions on first post
I did this with a 1gig SD, no partitions and had no trouble. Try it and see if that helps.
ivanmmj, Just2Clean was the first ROM I've used of yours. Works great. Like being able to customize my phone just how I want it.
Might just have to play in the kitchen just because. It's like you just gave me the best recipe book in the world!
Do what you want; because it's quality!
One of these days when I have the time to flash and customize your rom will be on my phone lol, ive heard many good things and I really want a clean rom so I can make it more personal just need more time man lol!!!

Mine is a 4gig, but i think i messed one up when I formated and partitioned, now it only recognizes one of my partitions...
But I did follow those instructions to a T
I had problems with my 4 gig going straight to the bootloader.
I didn't want to mess with the partitioning, so I used a 1 gig I had lying around. Sorry, can't help with that issue.
Did you try to fill up the SD with a dummy file until there is less that 1 gig free?

No, when I put into bootloader, no matter how I have it partitoned, it won't recognize my card....
Guess I'll get a 1 gig, they're 9 bucks on ecost

i think i should mention that you can flash from SD even if there are other files on the card- it doesn't have to be empty except for heraimg.nbh

+1 on this, will be really useful! Thanks for your work!

I currently have the partitions for /system and /data set as 200Mb. i am going to try and add on more for /cache, but I am looking into making it as small as possible, since many would not be installing a lot of extra apps. It could be as small as 330Mb total.
so will i need that APPS2SD thing for this?

No. I will have instructions on setting up your sdcard
Right now my script is linux based. I'm not sure how much can be done with a batch script, but it will direct you in what you will need to do.

sweet..your the man..cant wait!
One important thing I would like to propose here for the developer is a "standard" location somewhere on the SD card which would keep all the common data such as contacts, recent sms, call logs, etc. so that multi boot environment can share data without loss or duplicates.
In other words, boot to CM6 tonight and in two days when you decide to go back to stock ROM, all your sms, phone calls and such are picked up right where you left them in CM6 and vice versa.
Other than that, this sounds like an awesome thing. Can't wait to have the phone boot one ROM for Monday, another for Tuesday, and another for Wednesday and another...

Not really possible. Different rom versions (2.1 vs 2.2) store the data in different formats. You'll have to rely on something like titanium backup to handle it.
How exactly is the dual-booting done? Does the batch script need to be controlled from the computer, or have you made a custom bootloader for on-the-fly switching?

very good question
It's pretty simple if you have ever extracted the ramdisk and kernel from boot.img
The recovery has not been modified and the only time a computer is used is to setup the ROM the first time. You have to modify the boot.img from the ROM you want to installed on the sdcard. Once it has been changed, all you do is flash the boot.img of the ROM you want. I have mine setup where everything for the ROM is stored on the sdcard (/system, /data, and /cache) but have not been able to test out cache yet.
The reason for a non modified recovery is so that it can be done on any android phone.
I may put up a way to do this while I look into the script.
that is awesome you got so far so quick. i was hoping the squashfs tip would help you out. cant wait to see what approach you took.

Oh, I see how you do the dual boot now. But I have one more question. How exactly do you get the rom on the SD? Do you use an ext partition or just put it on the FAT partition? Or is there some other partition type that I haven't heard of?

Since everyone has a different size sdcard and most do not want to format the sdcard completely I will provide instructions on how to partition it correctly.

I have an 8GB class6. I have used about 4GB.
Post #2 has steps on setting up the sdcard
Just wondering but whats the plus side to this as opposed to just having different nandriod backups to flash between? I know it would be faster to boot but imo that's not woth all the partitioning of the sd card and what not. Now if it allowed you to run Windows Mobile roms from the SD then that would be awesome. I had a dual boot on my old HTC diamond and thats where I first discovered Android

Just bought.

Before I do the OTA update would you all recommend skipping it and going for the hacked ROMs? I will be working on this tonight.
Woot, EXCITED
Also what is the best 8-16g SD card to get? Does it matter?
Thanks

My vote would be to start with the modding... I have my first ROM flashed before I was out the door at sears.
A for the SD Card, there are several different choices; some prefer one brand over the other. I don't think I use mine as extensively as others. The higher the class (class 2,6,10) the faster the read/writes are supposed to be. I just recently picked up a 16gb Class 10 from Fry's for $32. Couldn't pass that deal up even though I didn't really need it.
Good luck!
Having just flashed mine from Stock 3389 + Enhancement Pack to TNT 3.1.3, I can tell you that there isn't a ton of difference between the two. I do like CWM and the ability to back everything up, but the Stock 3389 delivered very similar performance and Quadrant scores compared to TNT 3.1.3, in that when browsing, I can't really tell any difference at all.
It really wasn't very hard to flash a custom ROM. Just follow the directions from the one thread that talks about CWM, TNT, and Flash/Market fix, and just substitute the ROM of your choice. It's likely that you won't have to do the Flash fix either.
Enjoy!
Thanks
Thanks for the replies!
In order to use the custom ROMs I need an SD card correct? Is there anything in the new update that screws up using the custom ROMs?

Technically no... you can boot up and drop what you need on the internal SD and run from there. It's good to have a MicroSD on hand as you can run recovery/command directly from there if you'd like. It's also recommended to keep recovery files and a rom (stock) on the MicroSD in case of a boo boo, it allows you to boot to recovery and re run it.
Remember that in the recover folder there is a command file. That file is telling the tab where to look, either SDCARD (built in) or SDCARD2(microSD). That command is WIPED every time its run weather successful or not. Therefore it's a good idea to have a pc nearby in case you need to replace it.
Also, depending on where you are running it from make sure the command is pointing to where you are wanting to go SDCARD (built in) or SDCARD2(microSD). Some grab a stock recovery folder from here (which tells it to look locally) then put the ROM on the MicroSD and nothing happens.
Again, IMHO Clockwork is the way to go. I personally drop all ROMS in the internal SD and play from there. Boot into recovery (Clockwork) and tell it to install the flavor of the day.

sd card

so now that we have a working sd card is there any way to change the save location of the browser and camera to the new working sd card?

is there anything special to get the SD slot working? Mine still doesn't seem to be doing anything.
Well, in my opinion, which may be wrong...and probably is.
The new sd mod mounts the actual sd as /sdcard2/.
The problem i see with this is all the apps are looking for /sdcard/.
Now I think the best way to handle it would be to symlink /sdcard/ and /sdcard2/ as one volume.
The problem with that is that the volume manager would probably freak the **** out when you take your sdcard out of the device.
I don't know though, maybe bigrush or whoever got it working has this thought out better than I would have - but I am a software developer, not a kernel developer. That **** hurts my head.
Right now, i don't have an extra SD card worth my time of putting in (biggest extra I have is 8 gigs).
The only point I really see in it at the moment is extra space available from a file manager.
I am not sure if media scanner has to be modified to include the new directory to pic up on pictures, movies, and audio.

Lol root your xoom and flash the new tiamat 1.3.0 kernel
oh, maybe ill just break down and root it... I didn't really see any point until now with the lack of roms out for this so far.
I have already flashed my xoom, with the original one button flash. The new version does not have a way like the original to just one button the kernel. Will I have to re-root everything and go from there or will it sense that I am already rooted and take me to changing the kernel to be able to use the sdcard?

if you use the newest one click method with tiamat 1.3.1 you will be wiping your xoom's data back to stock as well. which means you'll have to setup your xoom again and reinstall all your apps again.
if you want to just flash the newest kernel w/out wiping the data just follow the instructions on this page:

[Q] Deleted all of the phones files? -.-

Hey guys hoping you can help me out here.
Let me just start by stating that I'm not really a tech savvy guy.
Okay, so here's my story. I found an old SD card with a bunch of stuff on it and decided to plug it into my phone. I was on CWR, and decided to format the SD card, I figured that would remove all of its content. Again, I stress I'm not tech savvy, however I figured its just and SD card and I could always resort to get another one if this one broke.
Anyway, if your still reading, I guess CWR didn't register the new SD card and instead reformatted my internal memory. (If that's the correct term).
Do I have any chance of getting the files back so it could at least boot?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry for being stupid.
Download your rom of choice put it on your sd card and and reflash through cwm unless you have titanium backup on your other sd you will probably have to redownload your stuff

You likely wiped the data/did a factory reset. Grab a ROM, toss it on your sd card and flash it, it won't get your apps back, you'll have to reinstall them.
If you want to use the stock ROM go here. Otherwise, pick a custom ROM and run with it.
