ROM's, Tools, or ROM's AND Tools, Should I? - Wing, P4350 ROM development

Hey guys, I was curious about something. I'm not sure if many people use my ROMs, so I wanted to find out who does. Who thinks I should ONLY focus on things like kitchens and porting tools and stuff, etc.
Should I work on a second set of ROM's, instead of a Just2Clean, a JustStuffed or something. Something with lots of features and programs, setup the way I would set it up.
Or work on Just2Clean simply so that I can use it on my kitchens?

Judging from the past quality of your roms, i highly condone and encourage you to create a "JustStuffed" rom. The only person any rom is perfect for is it's creator, and people should realize that.
Keep working on Just2Clean and the new kitchen, though. By the way, is there a way to use Just2Clean with EBO? I can't figure out how to decompile it.

Your ROM's are great, but...I...I just got used to the feeling I'm running my own ROM. As fzzyrn said, a ROM is always best for its creator. Now I'm running a ROM created in your first kitchan and it is fine. Thanks for all your work whatewer you do

I've voted for these two.
Work on both ROMs and Tools? They all ROCK! I'm using your ROM right now and it's fast and stable!
If you made the JustStuffed, I'd use it. I like the stability and speed, but it's too stripped.
But do what you love to do and don't follow other people's suggestions.
Do what you want to do. That's the only thing i can say.

I'll have to remember to upload the raw kitchen files tonight. I haven't test it with every package, though, so you will probably have to solve a lot of multiple file errors.
Everyone else, thanks for the comments. Ok, I will release a Just2Stuffed!

Just tools. Start with a multiple scheduler calendar!

i am a very satisfied user of your superclean rom. thanks for you great work!

The ROM looks great, I just can't get any help with formatting the micro SD card and being able to run it...
But keep doing both!

b. mann, when you format the SD card are you formatting it to FAT32 and not just FAT?
Do a full format, *not* quick.
Then copy the "HERAIMG.nbh" file to the blank SD card. Follow instructions on first post
I did this with a 1gig SD, no partitions and had no trouble. Try it and see if that helps.

ivanmmj, Just2Clean was the first ROM I've used of yours. Works great. Like being able to customize my phone just how I want it.
Might just have to play in the kitchen just because. It's like you just gave me the best recipe book in the world!
Do what you want; because it's quality!

One of these days when I have the time to flash and customize your rom will be on my phone lol, ive heard many good things and I really want a clean rom so I can make it more personal just need more time man lol!!!

Mine is a 4gig, but i think i messed one up when I formated and partitioned, now it only recognizes one of my partitions...
But I did follow those instructions to a T

I had problems with my 4 gig going straight to the bootloader.
I didn't want to mess with the partitioning, so I used a 1 gig I had lying around. Sorry, can't help with that issue.
Did you try to fill up the SD with a dummy file until there is less that 1 gig free?

No, when I put into bootloader, no matter how I have it partitoned, it won't recognize my card....

Sorry, I'm out of ideas, I guess that's what happens when you take the easy route.

i think i should mention that you can flash from SD even if there are other files on the card- it doesn't have to be empty except for heraimg.nbh

[HOW TO] format sd card with paragon partiton manager

So I decided to make this small guide, on how to partitioning your sd card with paragon partition manager… There is many different ways, including a script an xda forum member created, and ubuntu as well.. But I assume paragon partition manager might be the best for all people who don’t know how to use Linux very much..
i wrote it on my blog, if is considered spam than illtry to put the images content directly in the post
http://nitropr.us/web/2009/05/08/format-sd-card-with-paragon-partition-manager/
hope it helps some one.. i know i know there is MANY ways for this.. but well sicne paragon question keep popping up and did not see a small how to with images for new users so hope it helps least 1 person
Thanks! That will be useful for many... this should be sticky along with the sapphire/magic port (after someone starts a new thread for the newer builds. 600 pages!) Or at least a wrap stick (a thread that contains many highly used threads like in the developement and hacking section under the main thread) would be useful.
i think this is the easiest way. I did this to my card and took only a few min. def the way to go.
its a good guide, but i have a question everytime i try to format this way in paragon it says cannot create partition because all primary slots are taken, it says this when i try to resize or create new. any ideas?
Ok I resized my card using paragon my fat32 is 5gb and my EXT2 is 1.5gb. I went and tried to follow these instructions http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Haykuro_Apps_to_SD and for some reason I am not seeing the system/xbin/busybox folder.

A few things here:
1. Unless you're planning on downloading every app ever made, you're never going to need a ext2 partition larger than 500mb, and even that is a LOT. I tried to fill my partition and managed to squeeze over 300 apps on there before I ran out of room...then I had to painfully uninstall them all cause I didnt feel like reformatting/reflashing/restoring.
2. Make sure you're using the right version of apps-to-sd. Haykuro's latest builds can be found here. The apps-to-sd versions are linked at the very top of the page.
3. The directories you're looking for are NOT on the sd card. They are only visible on the phone through adb. If you're not familiar with adb, do a quick forum search on how to set it up.

APPS2SD For Beginners

Hello everyone. I am branching over to XDA from Androidforums in need of more guidance.
First, let me say I HAVE searched for instruction to my post, I HAVE NOT been successful with any of my reading. I just closed three separate windows of firefox with a total of near 75 tabs, all related to apps2sd, but none giving the specific instruction I need.
If in reading this you can think of another thread that has my answer, PLEASE post it for me. -much appreciated
If not, please read and help if possible. (I am listing my set up in case it is user specific)
CDMA Hero
Rooted
RA-Heroc v1.2.3 Recovery
Fresh 1.0 Rom
My goal is to initialize and complete the process of setting up apps2sd system today.
I would like to sucessfully have this running and I cannot find any specific guide on "how to". I have however found MANY that speak about it after the fact.
So, please someone tell me what I need to do to set this up. I want apps off device and to have a "swap space (???)" set up.
Can I do this now (after having flashed custom rom) or do I need to start all over, beginning with apps2sd process first and then flashing Rom.
Detailed instructions much appreciated, or a link to appropriate thread.
THANKS!! Rep points for you!!
You just need to partition your SD card as ext2+FAT+swap and reboot. That's all.
This will erase your SD card, so be sure you copy everything off first.
Please edit the title of this thread and take out the [ROM] prefix. This is not a ROM and the title is misleading.
Thanks.
EDIT: Does FreshROM 1.0 have apps2sd? I thought it only supported it if you had it on there previously.
EDIT: Never mind, I just saw this in the FreshROM apps2sd rant post - "Now with all of THAT said -- this rom officially has and supports Apps2SD. "

Okay, but with a bit more detail... I am rebooting into recovery mode and then doing this? Can you explain with just a tad more detail? thanks!
Haha there is no more detail. Just format your SD card with that option. WAM BAM DONE
I swear I'm not a cop! I just made the same mistake once.
I tried looking for apps2sd info a while back and ran into your same dilemma. I ended up using Modaco's ROM (actually, I used the UNOFFICIAL updated modaco made by obelisk79) because it already had it on there.

Right in the recovery options there's one that says something like "Format SD card: Ext2+FAT+swap" or something like that. Choose that, then reboot.
I thought Fresh 1.0 had AppsToSD built-in. If it doesn't, this won't actually accomplish anything.

No, it's not the same as using swap. It works fine, don't worry about it.
AppsToSD works best with a Class 6 card, since the class 6 cards are faster.

Yes, I'm using it. I have read flipzmode's rant about why he doesn't like Apps2SD. I have had no problems with it.
When I ran it with the modaco/obelisk79 ROM it seemed to keep the phone relatively speedy, even with a ton of apps installed. I am using FreshROM 1.0 now and I ended up uninstalling a few apps because of lag.
EDIT: I am not inferring that FreshROM is any slower. I think the problem is on my end! BTW, I am using a 16G class 6 card.

Unfortunately I think mine is not a class 6, it's just an 8gig standard micro sd. (PNY brand).
Anyway, so i went in recov. mode and formatted to the ext/fat/swap partition. I reloaded my card with previous data. Is that all I need to do? is there no setting I need to monitor or adjust?
and also, will my current apps get pushed to the sd or is there a process I should follow to move them to the sd?
I just did this and it pushed my apps from what I can tell. My internal storage number went from around 90mb used to 52mb. Now my real question is if I wanted to undo this.. what kind of options/headache am I looking at ?

Current apps should get pushed to the SD. To make sure it's working, pull up an adb shell and do:
cd /data/app
pwd
You should see "/system/sd/app" spit back at you.

Well yeah you would certainly have to reformat. But in addition to that you would need to re-install your apps, since they would have been removed from the card.
I was reading somewhere that you can change a setting to zero which causes the hero to pull the apps back to internal storage, leaving you not needing to re-install. cAn't remember where setting is or where i found it...

Root Without Custom Build

So i am planing on selling my G1 to a friend, now I told him I will root his phone, but heres the thing, I want to unlock it for him since he uses at&t, that I can already do
But I wish to root his phone but not have a custom build, Since most Iv tryed crash more then the phone should and he has a 2gb sd card so he can't do apps on sd
is it possible, and once again ill state it,
1)unlocked
2)root w/ superuser
3)No custom build or if I have to,do a good non apps on sd thats very very very stable
4)Donut (latest android version)
it is very possible to do app2sd on a 2g card. it's not the best, but it is extremely possible. i ran my phone with a2sd on a 2g card for several months and it worked perfectly fine.
I dunno if this will work, and I might be totally just talking crazy, but if you didn't partition your sd card, i don't think it should use a2sd, since i guess to run it, it looks for that second partition? So just like a regular stock sd card without any other partitions should let him use just the regular memory. And on that note, enomther's roms are pretty close to stock, and i'm sure your friend wouldn't mind those extra little additions. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps!

And what is a problem to use app2sd on 2gb card? I use stock 1gb sd card for a2sd and everything is working fine.
Even if your friend only runs a 2gig card with just a 150meg ext partition still better than whats on the phone itself and is hardly a noticable loss.
As already mentioned on here Enomthers base rom and the 2.3.3 ext pack are pretty close to stock with a few improvements and I've been running it hard for over a month and never had any problems or issuse's and if you use Amon RA's 1.5.2 recovery image your blazing fella. I switch roms like my underwear at the moment and the nandroid + ext backup on the recovery image brings me back to exactly how is was before switching! Tis genius!

I currently have the partitions for /system and /data set as 200Mb. i am going to try and add on more for /cache, but I am looking into making it as small as possible, since many would not be installing a lot of extra apps. It could be as small as 330Mb total.
so will i need that APPS2SD thing for this?

sweet..your the man..cant wait!
One important thing I would like to propose here for the developer is a "standard" location somewhere on the SD card which would keep all the common data such as contacts, recent sms, call logs, etc. so that multi boot environment can share data without loss or duplicates.
In other words, boot to CM6 tonight and in two days when you decide to go back to stock ROM, all your sms, phone calls and such are picked up right where you left them in CM6 and vice versa.
Other than that, this sounds like an awesome thing. Can't wait to have the phone boot one ROM for Monday, another for Tuesday, and another for Wednesday and another...

Not really possible. Different rom versions (2.1 vs 2.2) store the data in different formats. You'll have to rely on something like titanium backup to handle it.
How exactly is the dual-booting done? Does the batch script need to be controlled from the computer, or have you made a custom bootloader for on-the-fly switching?

very good question
It's pretty simple if you have ever extracted the ramdisk and kernel from boot.img
The recovery has not been modified and the only time a computer is used is to setup the ROM the first time. You have to modify the boot.img from the ROM you want to installed on the sdcard. Once it has been changed, all you do is flash the boot.img of the ROM you want. I have mine setup where everything for the ROM is stored on the sdcard (/system, /data, and /cache) but have not been able to test out cache yet.
The reason for a non modified recovery is so that it can be done on any android phone.
I may put up a way to do this while I look into the script.
that is awesome you got so far so quick. i was hoping the squashfs tip would help you out. cant wait to see what approach you took.

lol..i dont use that much space...as you can see i have 1gb left on my
2gb..LMAO! i would have like prolly 15gb left on it. So it would be pointless for me to get a 16gb.

I have an 8GB class6. I have used about 4GB.
Post #2 has steps on setting up the sdcard
Just wondering but whats the plus side to this as opposed to just having different nandriod backups to flash between? I know it would be faster to boot but imo that's not woth all the partitioning of the sd card and what not. Now if it allowed you to run Windows Mobile roms from the SD then that would be awesome. I had a dual boot on my old HTC diamond and thats where I first discovered Android

Can I root and flash a new ROM without an SD card?

Do I have to have an SD to flash a new rom on the G? Mine will be here today but I won't get my SD card til the end of the week. I was hoping to wipe it and make it usable so I don't have a frustrating night playing with it.
Crap! This should have been in General, not in Development. Feel free to move it for my stupidity.
It has internal storage that mounts and looks like an sd card to the device. It's 16gb worth and you can use it to flash roms. So to answer your question, no you do not.
One caveat: If you flash to any mods, I would highly recommend having a microSD card on hand. Many of us have had issues where we get stuck in a reboot loop and the only way to re-flash is to use the microSD.
If you have clockworkmod, this is not a problem as you can have as many update.zip files as you want, and clockworkmod can just be directed to them.

Thank you roebeet. I am looking forward to putting TnT Lite on it. Is it possible to use the same card that I use in my Samsung Captivate just to flash it? I don't want to get things mixed up. I have another card on the way but not til Friday and I'm pretty sure I'll be disappointed with it stock.

Yes, that sdcard would be fine...
Couldn't one just open an adb shell and rename the zip as needed to flash whatever?

Not if you system is in a reboot loop - that's why I would recommend that anyone modding should have a microSD card on hand + a way to copy files to it from a PC.
Let's put it this way: you bought a $375+ device that you are now going to modify. Isn't it worth another 10 bucks (or less) to get a 2GB microSD as a backout in case it has problems?

Good thing I did. Everything went flawlessly at first and then after about an hour or so I rebooted and got stuck in a reboot loop. I think I'm ok now but we'll see. I really want to put the Tegra updates on there but am not feeling ballsy yet. I read too much about people having issues with it.
Thank you again to everyone who has helped and especially to you roebeet.
