Captivate is now 1 CENT!! - Captivate General

Friend just emailed me....the Captivate is now just 1 cent. Not a bad deal, eh?
http://tinyurl.com/2a9d8az

This is Amazon, much like WireFly,LetsTak and any other reseller they can price the phone at whatever price theyd like since they make comission off the monthly plans more so than the actual hardware. Theyll take a big hit ($200-$300) on the phone in order to make it back up with the plan.
BTW this is for new contracts only via Amazon, renewals are still $99 and Family is $149.

I just ordered one from Amazon for a penny. So long Sprint and so long samsung moment (blech)

I ordered mine from Amazon along with 3 other phones on a new family plan with 1400 minutes. Total cost after shipping: $.04.

makes me feel I made a mistake getting the phone in the first place. Good thing I like the phone.

Why would you feel like you made a mistake getting the phone if you like it just b/c the price went down? Hell, I paid $175 for mine (Family plan upgrade-secondary line) and I'm still happy with my purchase. I agree that it is annoying to see them offer such good deals for new users and screw over "loyal" customers though...

AT&T charged me $100, they gave me the $100 discount for being a loyal customer. Funny thing is i joined when the iPhone 3G came out.
I tried to get my wife to get it for 1 cent but she insists on getting the EVO, loyal yo sprint.

Loyal enough to pay 240 dollars more over the length of her contract? I've been with Sprint for 5 years and I'm not THAT loyal to them

To be fair Amazon's a dealer like Wirefly. They make nothing on the sale of phones but get paid on selling the contracts. The Captivate is 99 dollars if you are renewing or adding a line on Amazon. Still a better deal than anywhere else. As a NEW AT&T customer I would have spent $199 on the phone at the AT&T store. I was all about to buy a Vibrant yesterday for 70 bucks on Amazon when I found the penny deal on the Captivate. So here I am.

Difference is, when you buy it from the AT&T store, they cover your warranty for the year - and their warranty is great.
If you buy it anywhere else, you have to deal with Samsung directly unless you get lucky and AT&T ships you a replacement regardless.

Not so much a mistake, I am happy with my purchase. It's just the price that we pay to get the best in tech before everyone else.
I've never done that before, and used to tout that my motorola karma was pretty much the same thing as a smartphone.
Obviously I had no clue what I was talking about.

It's what I was told from AT&T and when I spoke to Letstalk, Wifefly and so on. But FWIW, people have stated that they just called AT&T and they sent them a replacement - but that could just be a YMMV. I would try to verify as well before you add insurance in case you don't need to.
But for $.01, I'm jealous!

Amazon has such a great rep that I doubt they'd have entered the Wireless sales business without some assurances from carriers. Wirefly has a shady rep from what I was able to google.

i paid full retail cause i wasnt up for upgrade... and thats for two phones too.. -_-. bye 1000

The thing many of you guys are not realizing is that this price and other similar deals are for completely new accounts only. Upgrades or even new family plan lines will bump up the price to $100-150. Under the circumstances most of the people I know who paid for Captivates, they wouldn't have saved any more money if they had waited, as everyone I know who has a Captivate was already an AT&T customer.
And quite frankly, while the Captivate is a great phone, it's not worth putting up with AT&T over if you're on a good carrier, especially since there is/will be a Galaxy S for all major carriers.

True, but reading through Amazons policy, they only support the phone for 30 days - as do all online retailers besides AT&T itself (they have a full year). Other online retailers pass the warranty to Samsung. But for the period Amazon does cover it - they have great customer service.
I'm not saying that's bad as I never dealt with Samsung for warranty purposes. I just know that AT&T deals with warranty issues very well. But regardless, $.01 for this phone is an amazing deal. The chance of needing a replacement post-30 days might not even occur for you - and if it does - you can always try AT&T for replacement.

So I wired my younger brother the money to pick up my phone in the US and send it back with my grandparents who are there visiting... He went to AT&T today and they denied him the ability to purchase me the phone off contract. He said he tried for a little, but they kept saying that they would not sell it to him off contract. I told him to try and go back if he can, but he might not be able to due to work and my grandparents leaving soon.
Can AT&T actually deny selling the phone off contract? I told him that if he is able to go back, to tell them that it is being sold from AT&T stores for $549.00 and to ask how it is possible for them to deny the sale.
I understand that they dont make money selling phones, but rather the service, but to just deny him is crazy...
Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?
Thanks everyone! Have been at this android thing for almost a year and I am still without one...
I have never heard of them denying someone to purchase a phone off contract. Tell him to go to Target or Wal Mart they sell att phones off contract.

I'm not sure if there is one near him unfortunately... I guess I should mention he lives in Boston at the moment, not cool on the part of the AT&T he went to.
Do you happen to know how much Walmart and Target are selling them for?
they can deny anything to anyone. but you can buy it on there website. they dont want to run out and are hoping that this will attract many new contracts so they prefer to sell to new subscribers. my att reps dont care either way and i had the option to buy outright, i shoulda taken that option but it is too late now. im not sure if i can cancel an early upgrade in the first month like a new contract.

about $50-$100 more as far as i can tell but some regions are jacking up the price even in the at store. i think it is $579 on att's website. my store is $549 but some stores may be $600 or more
Is he a ATT customer. It is true they wont sell to non customers and they dont have to.
Crazy how some places jack up the price like that. The reason I cannot order it online is because I would have to pay a 16% tax for it to get through customs here in the Dominican Republic. So i have been trying to coordinate with friends and family that have been in the US and this was my big chance so say.
Pretty annoyed about this, seems like everytime I try to get a phone i am unsuccesful for one reason or another. Already had the issue with the G2X not being quad-band.
I hope he was able to go back this evening and get it... Not sure what to do next if that doesn't work out.
Ya. Inspire was $399 off contract at att. Went to buy at best buy because I had a 10% coupon and they wanted $599 for the thing! No.thanks! I'd call corporate and complain about the store. Either way its bad customer service for them to turn you down like that. "Can I give you $550 for this item" rep "no" ... "only $199" doesn't make sense. I'd raise hell. I realize they make money off the data plans and.contracts and how att works but either way you look at it that's poor customer relations and incorrect information directly from a.corporate store.

I'm not sure I'd plunk down that much for the infuse anyway. It has the same gps issues as the captivate and nexus s phone. To me I'd buy an iPhone and have your brother send it along with your grandparents or even an atrix. I like my phones to work right.

Yes, AT&T rep told me that first couple of weeks no AT&T store will sell a new phone without contract.
You have to go to bestbuy for that. I bought mine there for $599 without contract.
Another option is online purchase from AT&T's website for $549 without contract, but there may be some issues with that.

T-Mobile in store restocking fee $75...Yikes!

Hi everyone....
So for ****s and giggles I called the local T-Mobile store here in Portland, OR to see if they had Sensations in stock and to to see what it would cost to exchange.
They told me there would be a $75 restocking fee.....???
Yowzer!
Curious what anyone else has had to pay regarding a restocking fee. The other threads about this subject here on XDA seem to be no where near that price....$10...$30 etc.
Is that normal for TMo??
Thanks!
30..... thats high bro lol probably because so many are going back for exchanges

I heard they upped it to 50 i think they are smoking the the mowi wowie with a little labrador in it. and trying to pocket 25 for his store.
HAHAHAHA.....
Why does it have to be this way....
Customer Care says..."it's a $50 restock on smartphones. Tablets are $75".
TMobile Store says, "whoops".... reluctantly.
I say I want to exchange my G2X for either another G2X with no bleed or a Sensation...Customer Service says...."Sure! Screen Bleed = defective device.... Restocking fee is waived on a defective devices".
I say great!! Thank you so much!!
TMobile Store says...."Yeah! We got both devices in stock....come and down!" "Oh, there will still be a restocking fee though. Sorry. You have to call Customer Care and have them put in the notes that it's been waived."
Customer Care says...."it's now in the notes. Fee waived. Sorry for the trouble, have a nice day."
Why so difficult. Get on the same page you idiots....
T-Mobile upped the price because of all the people that were getting the phones to just try them and return them. It happens a lot at my store. T-Mobile loses a lot of money from ppl doing this. If something is wrong you are not charged anything for a return. non smart phones are $25, Smart phones are $50, Tablets are $75. I do like this as I hate seeing people just buying phones to try them and nothing more. If you buy a phone you buy it because you want it. If you want to return it for no reason or because something new comes out deal with the restocking fee. You should of looked into the device more before you bought it. Also every rep in my Store tells ppl about the restocking fee before they sign the contract renewal and if you don't like it don't buy the phone then. I do the research on a phone before i buy it so i know if i am returning it, it is because something is wrong with it.
You that doesn't always work. I researched my phone for 3weeks
Did not consider any LG. Settled on a Droid X2. Spent a hour in the store. Got home tried it for 3 hours....hated it. Returned it...
Went to tmo to look at a sensation...and saw a g2x...end of story.
So even with research, it cost me $35

I disagree, I did plenty of research before buying this pile of poo. I played with it several times before I bought it.
When the threads started popping up about reboots I thought you guys were crazy and just got bad phones. Two weeks ago my phone reset while making a call. I blew it off as a fluke. Since then it happens on average every other day with some days worse than others. Still since then my GPS takes 10-15 minutes to find me. I paid cash for this crap from the dealer and would like them to work harder to get an update asap.
My remorse period ended before two weeks ago.
So should I have seen this coming?

You can't properly see how good or bad a device is until you use it for a few days. These restocking fees are bull****. They should let you do one for free. After that than charge 50 bucks.

FYI T-mobile instituted an exchange program that many are not aware of you since its pretty new. has to be a WORKING SMARTPHONE but the trade it towards a new phone is 150-300 depending on the your trade in and what they can do with it. might be something to consider. i got this info from one of those screenshots of a tmobile email/newsletter picture i saw online a few weeks ago. many reps aren't aware of it yet because no one seems to have tried out this new policy. google for a bit and you'll find it. i think it was a Tmonews.com
on the restocking fee... thats ****in bogus bud. no way should they be saying that. seems way to high. 25 or 35 bucks i understand for brand new devices being returned (and they raised the G2x price another $50 anyways so there's some resale $ for them). i find you can always talk them down. one way or another. in fact i have a brand new htc sensation 4g coming to my house in 3 days, for FREE, rush delivered FREE, and i don't have to give them my g2x. i get to keep it. guess they don't want them back cuz i an arranged previously with 2 reps to echange it but then today they said "nah its cool. just keep the G2x as well" *****en.........

[Q] Calling all former G2X owners!

As you all may know, the G2X has issues. I hate the fact that it has been released with so many issues and that after 4 returns, I have not had one perfect phone. After being treated like crap with customer service about exchanging to the sensation, I wrote a well worded letter and sent it to all the big wigs at TMobile corporate figuring I would finally get the sensation for free (if they valued my service). I asked for the sensation at no charge or for them to let me out of my contract since they continue to give me a faulty phone. An exec called me today and stated that they would accept the $50 upgrade but they would do no more. She also said they would not let me out of contract. When I mentioned filing a complaint with the BBB, she said she looks into all complaints from them and that she would not be calling me back and the offer would no longer be valid!!! Now that is guts. No wonder they have been slipping in service year after year......
My question is, should I just pay the $50 for the sensation and be done with it? I really hate the G2X screen bleed and it seems like HTC will be better on updates.
Please help me make my decison.
I'd say if you can upgrade to the Sensation for $50 and be done with the headache and hassle....go for it. You can start enjoying a device, rather than weeks of being pissed.
I would say NOT to pay the 50 bucks. Check the forums there's some guy that got (I think) a free sensation and kept his G2X. File your complaint with the Better Business Bureau, document everything that T-Mobile has been saying to you. Also try to email the CEO, random officers of the company. Corporate email address are usually very, very, very, very easy to guess!
For example Robert Smith is going to be
Rsmith
R.smith
Robet.Smith
Robertsmith
@ Company dot com. Good Luck! May the force be with you! I also would not extend my contract with that $50 dollar "upgrade"

I have the G2x and for the most part it's been a very good for me. Biggest issue for me is BT headaches. I'd be on a call and BT would disconnect. If the call was an hour it would drop 4-5 times. I had some other minor issues but if a phone can't be used as a phone what's the point. Anyway, the Sensation just works, right out of the box. If I were in your shoes I'd pay the $50 and be done with it.

the $50 offer is a GOOD offer. I'd take it. Its what you would have paid had you skipped the g2x in the first place. The carrier doesn't warranty the phones, the manufacturer does. They could just tell you to contact LG for any further issues.
I bought the G2X from Wirefly for $150, then got an adjustment when it went down to $100. So in reality, I would end up paying $150 for the sensation.
... and that's bad?
waaay better than most people
honestly, paying only a $50 upgrade is nothing for a better and much sturdier phone. I keep telling people that LG is actually Gold Star - the company that back in the day made crappy appliances. Now they make crappy phones. One of my relatives bought one of those phones and had trouble from day 1.
to be fair everyone does not have a crap experience, however, i hear more people complaining and taking them back. t-mo reps at t he stores, if you engage them, will tell you not to get them on the DL.
pay up and enjoy my friend.
its 50 dollars.. and your complaining? i paid 160 for mines. Be happy they are giving it to you for cheap.. everyone wants something for free now adays.
I paid $600 plus tax at Walmart so $50 isn't bad... you could always sell the Sensation on Craigslist/ebay use the money to pay the early cancellation fee and still have enough change to buy a $200 phone on another provider...
That discount is almost better than mine. They gave me one for $200, extending my contract when I wasnt even close to needing a renewal. They gave me a month free, cut prices off my data plan, added free web and text to my other two lines. I still haven't been able to sell my G2x, people don't want them no more. Its crazy.
I had a g2x and was offered a waived restocking fee of $50 for a sensation which was 199.99 with $50 rebate so $150 + tax and crud
tell you what tho. Have had zero issues with my sensation as compared to my g2x. I love the g2x also. We have yet to see the potential of the Tegra processor.

Well I am dealing with almost the same issue except they wont even allow me to pay an extra fee to upgrade to the sensation. And this was an exeutive customer relations rep. Cindy Maes called me today and stated that they would accept the $50 upgrade but they would do no more.

Dude is it worth $50 to end the frustration? The device is $50 more expensive than the G2x anyway...so they are taking the device back and asking for the difference.
Its a wash....take it and run....and remember....there's no place like home....
Take it man. $150 in total is basically what they are offering online for new customers.
I wish would have offered me this deal

Nobody is special. Its a restocking fee of 50 dollars within the 14 day trial period. I would have to pay it too but i decided to keep the sensation.

I will not use foul language on XDA because I'm mad with my carrier

Not sure I agree with the charge but welcome to the true cost of the phones, without carrier subsidy, like the rest of the world does.

wtf is the point of carrier subsidy, contracts, etc if they are gonna rape me for bull**** like these charges??
Is this for the mytouch or the g2x?

Americans, for the most part, have absolutely no idea how money works and will happily pay huge monthly fees if it means a cheap piece of hardware.
A friend of mine told me flat out he will never pay more than a hundred dollars for a phone and yet gladly pays $90 per month. He, and millions of others, cannot fathom budgeting beyond a single month.

I went through this same bull**** last week. I got my bill and saw that charge and called. I thought it was mislabeled shipping charges since the lady in the chat asked me if we wanted expedited shipping for the G2x for $20 or not and we declined. Sadly it was for replacing the phone. I even stated that I was clearly under warranty and thought the charge was inappropriate and that not even AT&T, my previous carrier up until 6 months ago, ever charged me for replacing phones under warranty. All to no avail, they don't really care.
I switched to T-Mo for the promise of excellent customer care and ever since moving to T-Mo and the G2x I haven't seen anything like that fabled customer care I've heard about.
I received two $20.00 charges and a $5.00 charge on my bill. It's complete bull. The phone was less than a month old!
So did they guy who swapped out ten phones under warranty pay $200.00 in these charges? LMFAO.
Kinda strange it says one time service charge then there are two charges of twenty bucks.
That sucks,
Doug
Samsung Admire (MetroPCS)
well now i'm praying that my g2x is relatively bug free.... before the g2x i had the g1 and i've been through six of those phones. i've never ever had to pay a warranty fee, it must be new?
sux, I hope you guys don't pay for insurance too.
These things come with a 1 year manufacturer warranty.
If you didn't know that, I hope you will remember it and stop paying T-mobile(or any carrier) for bull****.
Pretty much any electronic device you buy has a 1 year manufacturers warranty.
So don't waste your money.
If you don't believe me, read your manuals!
well then what's the difference between asking for a replacement and getting it free as opposed to asking for a replacement and having to pay for it? i don't understand where these charges are coming from all of a sudden since i've never had to pay them before

it was for the mytouch. my G2x knock on wood is perfect (well, as perfect as CM7 can be i guess)
sadly, 3 hours of phone calls netted me nothing. i got phucked.
that insurance they keep pimping to me is also bull****. i dropped that after the first month when i learned that the rep lied out of his ass to sell me that **** in the store, and i made sure i got my money back for that. i got my 40 bucks back too as i refused to pay that fee.
of course the one rep that found the proper notations of some sort (or claimed to have seen it) i dropped the call or i got disconnected!!!! arrgh thats when the 10 phone calls in a row started trying to get an american rep!
oh yea, and that new IVR system they have now is really ****ty! want a rep, just say tech support, and it takes you to a regular care rep anyways so just ask for tech support when the dumb ***** asks you why you are calling. i had to call back 4 times just because that stupid computer slut kept cutting me off and hanging up on me when i asked for a human to speak to. they are really gearing up to lose that "top customer service/satisfaction" slot they supposedly hold.
third exchange, they offered me a mt4g slide as a replacement...cool, i said go for it ill take that deal. they sent me a mt4g like i have already. i called them on it today, saying hey you sent me the wrong device. they have no records of me getting a mt4g slide. they offered me a samsung galaxy 4g. i said no thanks, i was told i was getting a slide.
oh and 3 hours of calls was me waiting on hold to get an american rep, since tmo wants to outsource more often now!
i noticed this tho, if you get the option to have them call you back instead of waiting on hold, 1...dont do it because you wont get that call back, and 2....thats an american rep you will be waiting for on hold...all the times i got a out of country rep i never got the option to get the hold call back.
problem is, if you pay full retail you still need a contract unless you go prepaid. you go prepaid, you are treated like a third world hoodrat compared to a postpaid customer, who is treated like a second class citizen at best. so no matter what you get phucked where the sun dont shine regardless of what you do!
whatever, she is due for an upgrade in november anyway, so regardless ill get her a better phone no matter what. it would have been nice tho to get a 4g slide as it would have been worth more on fleabay down the road. ill sign my monkey contract to stick with their retarded collective asses and eventually pay $200 bucks to cancel, as ill get that money back by selling the device on ebay anyways so no major real loss here. i refuse to go to sprint, and verizon is expensive....ug i should have kept verizon from the get go.

please explain what this means. although tmobile does have a cheaper rate if you dont buy the phone outright(not really even sure its cheaper unless you want the lowest service available) i know verizon doesnt dont believe att does either dont know about sprint.
but we dont have a choice but to pay for the service we need whatever they charge. we do have the ability to stand up and not pay money for fixes for phones sold broken. and i never paid a dime for my 2 replacements. nor would i.
Your post is not only insulting , it also makes no sense and has nothing to do with the thread. !!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think what he means is that americans only see half the cost. when they see a full retail cost of a phone at $500 bones, and can pay 1/5th of that or even less they think they got a deal but when you see all the fees and extra bull**** they silently tack on to your bill, we dont care because the phone which is the cool thing to have does tons of fart apps and the bill dont matter anymore.
Actually, TMO will give you a cheaper rate if you own the outright. They have what they call Value + which has lower rates I think.
If you have insurance on your phone they will only charge you 5 bucks and will overnight you a replacement. I also agree that the $20 charge is complete bs and I'm a Tmo employee lol.

Actually his post makes perfect sense. Problem is that T-Mobile is the only choice if you do want to make any use of high upfront cost/lower cost in the long-run vs little up-front cost/much high cost in the long-run that our society is prone for.
As for the plan not being cheaper... not so sure.
My regular plan:
120*24=2880
250 for two phones.
Total over the life of a contract: 3130.00
My value plan:
650 for two phones (100 for G2x, 150 for the Galaxy, plus 400 "conversion fee")
80*24=1920
Total over the life of a contract: 2570.00
Difference: 560
How's it not cheaper?

Can I sell my new Skyrocket? Or will I receive a penalty? Help, very desperate.

Hello everyone,
Times are tough. I need my phone for work but at the same time I also need some cash. Sadly I have to stick with my old Captivate. My plan was to sell my skyrocket, which I am already falling in love with.
I renewed my contract with ATT today at a ATT authorized small carrier dealer (Chinese shop). They ended up giving me the skyrocket for free. But the guy warned me that if I tried to sell the skyrocket then AT&T will terminate my contract. On my contract with this shop (AWG in San Gabrial Valley, CA), it says if my contract gets terminated in any kind of way within 180 days then I will owe AWG $300 for each PCS line. I have a family plan. He said if I wait 2 months then I can sell the phone, but not to sell it right away and that I need to use the phone during this 2 month period. He also said if I had an iPhone I would have to keep it for 6 months!
I don't know if this is true because I see people selling phones on craigslist left and right. Does anyone have any advice for me? Would AT&T really terminate my contract just because I choose to use my old phone?
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST! I hope you guys can help me here.
Its not true u can sell it your stuck with the sim card and bill for 2 years but u can sell the device ive done it so have many many others. Thats the great thing about phones with sim cards u can sell or trade them at your discretion. I traded my sgs2 for the skyrocket.
You should be able to sell it. The phone its self is not bindingly tied to the sim card it has. People do it with iphones, and well, every phone out there. I don't think at&t would terminate you for selling a phone. Now, if you sold/lost your phone with the sim card still in it and someone were to rack up alot of charges, then yeah, you might be penalized. If you do intact get charged, att cancels your contract, your cat gets eaten by a dog that subsequently gets hit by a car that gets hit by a semi, don't blame me as, I just was browsing and chimed in

Thanks guys. Yeah, I don't understand why ATT would terminate my contract out of the blue, specially for using my old phone. It just doesn't make sense or add up. I really wish I could have been apart of this great community. I hope ICS comes to you guys real soon.
Also, your sig on your internet speed and it being comcast = hilarious haha. For a second I thought it was your mobile phones speed!
Please, if anyone has a horror story of this actually going wrong. Chime in and let me hear. But if you guys have successfully sold your phones or traded them with no problems then let me know also.
Ahmen!
this is my phone speed 35.21mbps download
You would only be penalized if the line in question is cancelled. I work for At&t in the city of long beach (company owned retail) and we get customers in our stores that do the same thing... if its not blackberries, its iPhones... but yeah. You could definately sell the phone, but u gotta keep the 2 year commitment.

You Dont have to keep the data plan. Very common misconception.
Newter55 is correct. Remove that data plan and save yourself $25 (or $15) a month. As long as the line in question is active, you will be fine. I know going into corporate retail can be a major drag, but it beats dealing with authorized retailers... it seems like lately 95% of fraud gets tracked back to dealers... everytime I get manager escalation regarding fraud, its the first question I ask my customers.. and 9 times out of 10, it all goes back to them. The funny part is when u try to contact the dealer and they act like you are speaking Swahili lol...

Read your contract very carefully. If it's something like the contract that I signed with Amazon, if I remove my phone/data package within the first 6 months, I will get charged $250 (from Amazon, not from AT&T). This is partly because I got the phone for $.01, instead of $249 like I would have paid directly through AT&T.
This is usually only the case with e-tailers. I have not yet seen this type of thing from authorized retailer stores, but there's a first time for everything.
I work in customer care at ATT
Lol naa. You can sell it but u have to pay for you plan for the 2 years. People do it all the time aell/trade phones. If you pay your bill for the length u signed for u can sell it now

That's exactly my concern is too. I got the phone from Amazon for $0.1 and I am thinking about selling it and getting either the LG Nitro or Samsung Note but I'm worried about Amazon charging me $250.
It all depends where you bought it; read your contract. Do you have a contract with just AT&T, or do you have one with your retailer as well? If you have a contract with your retailer, for instance Amazon has contracts, you will pay a penalty if you change anything or take the phone off the line, even if you change the number. If you don't have a contract with your retailer, then you just have to deal with AT&T--for instance you bought the phone at Best Buy or a Corporate store. They don't seem to care what you do, as long as you pay your bill. Be careful, many AT&T stores look corporate, but are actually third party retailers.
Again, read your contract/contracts. Don't trust the advice of people who haven't read YOUR contract.

I disagree completly i bought a tmobile phone from amazon and sold it no penality same with att. They dont even know you sold it amazon cant monitor you att acount too see if you changed devices on your account. You sir are wrong. That would mean if you had an old phone and wanted to pop your sim out of your new one and use the old one amazon would charge you 250 because ur not using that phonE. Amazon does not know they get money from ATT for selling you the 2 year contract.... if you terminate you contract before the 2 years then yes they can charge you for it
