Just curious if this phone will have a workaround to sideload Android Apps like the HTC did for Aria (Full Description Here if you didnt know: http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/htc-sync-lets-att-aria-owners-sideload-apps )? If anyone knows please post! I was on the fence when I saw no camera flash, but seeing that AT&T will be restricting (why? Iphone competition?) unknown Android Apps is another big one. So if atleast there is a workaround, I will consider switching to this phone.
If not, ill just keep hoping for Android on my HTC hd2
I'm not certain either. I did download the Samsung Kies program last night but didn't look at it since I don't have a Captivate to hook it to until Sunday. I have a reasonable expectation that it will allow you to do it since you can buy apps from Samsung directly in the program.
Also consider that this phone has already been rooted. My understanding is that you can load "unauthorized" apps and apps that require root access once this has been done. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

youre right. sideloading wont be a problem
Awesome. Thanks for the quick responses guys. Looks like Ill be heading to my AT&T store. Been wanting to have a fully fledged smart android phone on at&t for awhile now. Heres hoping for the best
I was under the impression that the root alone wont give that option back. Do you need a custom rom as well or does the root really take care of the issue by itself?
*foot in mouth*

you can sideload with samsungs app if you grabbed it before they pulled it back. Im sure if you did a google for it or asked here someone might have a mirror to it. I didnt grab it while it was up cuz i didnt think they'd push the undo button on it.
p.s. i believe you wont need a root if you had that app.

Do you know the name of the app?
fk me i should go to bed. I was thinking about the htc aria. Totally diff story.
But further research shows that peeps have already tested sideloading and it works through the ADB. I didn't find a full review however. Try to do a google search for how to side load captivate adb and see if anything useful pops up. let us know. If you don't find anything ill properly look into it tomorrow

Anyone get this to work? The phone shows up when you do the devices command, but anytime I try to push an apk it says permission denied. ?

Ok, it worked... half. I am trying to get the HTC IME keyboard on, it has 2 apk's to install. One worked fine, when I tried the other it gave me this this error:

Hey guys,
Thought I might let everyone know of a way I worked out to send files from my Adroid (Galaxy S) to my girlfriends iPhone. I've written a blog, so check it out.
http://denno020.blogspot.com/
I talk about some of the ways that you would think of making it happen, and why they didn't work (in my case anyway).
I reckon it's a pretty clever way to get it done.
Hope someone finds use for it!
Denno
Its not the best way to send or receive file due to it have to access internet. Android could sent or receive file using bluetooth after it rooted
Yeah you're right, but the problem wasn't on my end, it was with her iPhone not being able to accept the bluetooth as it's really only made for connecting to hands free devices.
And again you're right about the need for internet, but I doubt very much many people wouldn't have internet access on their smart phone. I could be wrong, but it just didn't seem like it would be a problem..

Really? Didn't even think to try it.. Will have to give it a go. But does this work from Android to iPhone? Or just between Android devices?
errr what is bump ?
What about a solution involving setting up a Portable Hotspot on your Android phone and then your iPhone navigates to the web address and downloads the files there.
Free software such as PAWS acts as a web server on the Android phone - then the iPhone can access it.
File transfer to iphone
Hey I found a cool way to transfer files to iPhone. I downloaded an android app called andftp. Then sshed into my jailbroken iPhone thru ssh, this allowed me to see and transfer files. An unexpected find was that my android Fone was not rooted but I could browse all my android files systems. As well as my iPhone file systems. I hope this helps someone and allows the rooting of more androids out there.
I can't seem to get barnacle or wifitether to work on this phone. Has anyone else been successful in tethering with the infuse?

You don't have to have the tethering plan? Can't att ttell?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

I notice you said ATT, but your profile shows the Canadian flag. So are you in Canada or US with ATT.
I know some Canadian carriers have some tether included in the 3G for free at no extra charge.

I dont see those apps in the marketplace. I take it you have to root?
I used EasyTether Pro. Works on my Mac fine. I have rooted the phone already, any way of getting a WiFi one now that it's rooted?
Ya you have to be rooted. Go to 4shared.com and search for barnacle.apk.

guys MOBILE AP in settings! that's native wifi teather ap stands for access point. there is an apk you need to delete or freaze to do it without the tethering plan. ill get details from captivate section and report back.
I can now confirm that Android-Wifi-Tether works.
I used Tether for Root Users 2.0.8-pre1 Wireless
I agree with Dani897, this will ultimately be a matter of replacing the AT&T Modded Wifi AP with the google stock version.

in titaniumbackp if you are rooted freeze ir uninstall "tetheringmanager0326.apk" should unlock it. you can also delete it from adb, rootexplorer, other root file managers as long as you mount read write in terminal emulator, or you can use terminal emulator.
i have a linux machine and use sshdroid to ssh into the phone. that's another way to do it if you get a windows application that handles ssh.

10-4.
I was hoping of a way around it without root. I know the Atrix had one.
Thanks anyways.
Good morning (well, it's morning on the east coast anyway...) gentlemen and women.
I come to you in need of ideas.
I had a Captivate on MIUI since last June, but my baby's charger port broke on me maybe 3 weeks ago.
After struggling with the concept of letting it go, I ordered a replacement last Monday, which came Wednesday. I rooted it, updated to GB Bootloaders, and threw an ICS ROM on it yesterday with no problem. Got all the apps I care about and my texts back. I love it.
Buuut, I have about 10 GB of music on my old Captivate, and almost none of it is on my Google Music. My laptop's charger port is broken too, and it would take weeks to get it all back on my ancient 2001 desktop. How could I get it all off, preferably by today, and on to my new phone under these circumstances?
Thanks in advance.

Look in the market for adb wireless. Once you have it installed, activate it on your phone, and follow the directions to connect to it from your pc. Then just issue an adb pull (your music directory) from the pc.
You may need adb installed on the PC as well.
Or, if you have a micro SD, you can move the files in small batches between phones.

I think I'll be doing this. I actually went with the old fashioned way and just slowly dragged files from my phone to my 1 GB microSD, dragged that to my school laptop (otherwise useless outside of school. No Wi-Fi and restricted in just about every way), and then dragged those to my new phone.
Took forever, but it worked lol.

To anyone who doesn't know:
The GS3 doesn't communicate with a Mac out of the box (And it is a royal pain in the a). You need a special program from Google called Android File Transfer.
To the OP: no, there's no fix, at least that I know of, and trust me I've looked... And it sucks. Everyone always suggests these programs from the play store, but they all SUCK!!
Android File Transfer was amazing, when it worked. All we can really hope for is a fix from either Google or Samsung to make it work again.
Samsung has a program called kies, which still sucks but is OK for syncing music...
Personally I've resorted to boot camp. Whenever I need to sync something I just boot up windows on my Mac.

google samsung sg3 easy ums fix, you will be able to mount external sd card easily not internal , it will look like another drive. works with my mid 2011 macbook air with snow mountain lion.
as for the internal portion , your only choice is airdroid. it does every thing, delete , upload , etc... airdroid does nto require active tethering, passive is just fine. I personally use airdroid a lot.
P.s. root required for ums fix ( like every android phone , without root , the phone is as useless as an iphone )
1st off, MAJOR Thanks To all that replied.

I've been trying to communicate with the devs they haven't really said anything,
Everything worked on Touchshiz.

Idk if the new nexus is going to have the same storage system as the GS3. I'm not too techy with the internals so not sure how it all works...

It used to work for me. Then I OTA'd and bam.
What rom are you on? The vralg7 (or whatever it was called)(4.0.4?) OTA made Android File Transfer not work with GS3 anymore.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
yeah all these f'ing OTA updates did for me was make my phone black screen of death CRASH all the time requiring battery pull, break Android File Transfer to my Mac, and make my phone run hotter. Which is probably because of that stupid Verizon remote "assistance" crap bloat they put in so they can probably record everything we are doing.
Verizon screws everything up. Wish another carrier had as good of LTE. I am probably going to exchange this for Note II because of these problems. I expect VZ to pay for it or most of it.
Unless Google goes back on their work, the MTP standard will continue. I see it as unlikely for connectivity to Macs to improve for ICS+ phones until Google provides a better tool.

What I've been running into on Apple's Support Forums is that AFT seems to work best only up to 10.6, some have had success with 10.7 and most are reporting absolute failure with Mountain Lion. I'd use AirDroid but my MacPro doesn't have a WiFi antennae, unless it can go through my router somehow as Kies Air does?
Has there been any progress on this?
