Sideload Apps? - Captivate General

Just curious if this phone will have a workaround to sideload Android Apps like the HTC did for Aria (Full Description Here if you didnt know: http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/htc-sync-lets-att-aria-owners-sideload-apps )? If anyone knows please post! I was on the fence when I saw no camera flash, but seeing that AT&T will be restricting (why? Iphone competition?) unknown Android Apps is another big one. So if atleast there is a workaround, I will consider switching to this phone.
If not, ill just keep hoping for Android on my HTC hd2

I'm not certain either. I did download the Samsung Kies program last night but didn't look at it since I don't have a Captivate to hook it to until Sunday. I have a reasonable expectation that it will allow you to do it since you can buy apps from Samsung directly in the program.
Also consider that this phone has already been rooted. My understanding is that you can load "unauthorized" apps and apps that require root access once this has been done. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

youre right. sideloading wont be a problem

Awesome. Thanks for the quick responses guys. Looks like Ill be heading to my AT&T store. Been wanting to have a fully fledged smart android phone on at&t for awhile now. Heres hoping for the best

I was under the impression that the root alone wont give that option back. Do you need a custom rom as well or does the root really take care of the issue by itself?

*foot in mouth*

you can sideload with samsungs app if you grabbed it before they pulled it back. Im sure if you did a google for it or asked here someone might have a mirror to it. I didnt grab it while it was up cuz i didnt think they'd push the undo button on it.
p.s. i believe you wont need a root if you had that app.

Do you know the name of the app?

fk me i should go to bed. I was thinking about the htc aria. Totally diff story.
But further research shows that peeps have already tested sideloading and it works through the ADB. I didn't find a full review however. Try to do a google search for how to side load captivate adb and see if anything useful pops up. let us know. If you don't find anything ill properly look into it tomorrow

Anyone get this to work? The phone shows up when you do the devices command, but anytime I try to push an apk it says permission denied. ?

Ok, it worked... half. I am trying to get the HTC IME keyboard on, it has 2 apk's to install. One worked fine, when I tried the other it gave me this this error:

I saw that in the Eris dump when i was playing with it. The way i figure, if it's some call home tattletale app built into test software, it calls back to verizon and I have unlimited data - at that point I chuckled and stopped caring.

it comes from the Eris dump. If it's some tracking software put in there to keep people from sharing it, it will call back to Verizon. It wont cost me anything, since data is free.
then i realized i was getting freaked out over phone software, so I just laughed at myself and installed anyway.
It very well could be something that whoever leaked it out put in. I don't have anything I care about on my phone. I'm not suggesting it's safe, just that I thought I was silly.

how do i remove this? i tried it via root explorer and it didn't work...
hmmm. under further inspection i believe it takes screenshots as it contains the same exact instructions as shootme in the apk. very strange. kinda scary. i remember someone on said on the forum where the eris was leaked tht the guy who posted it will be able to see everything you do and he and the guy who started the post has only 1 post on xda to this day
but no big worrys lol it also contains png's with htc's logo.

im not sure. in the resources theres nothing to specify that. its like it takes a screenshot when you do something to trigger it and bam it sends? lol creeeepy
I've tried examining the apk myself, where are you seeing instructions that relate to ShootMe? Is it not also possible it is similar because you are looking at aspects of the APK that would be shared across most APKs in general?
Not saying this isn't something malicious, just curious what we have to suggest that it truly is.
I'm hoping its a case of "Paranoia will destroy ya", but I supposed it is possible we are all running some kind of screen-grabbing trojan. In the meantime, either follow gbhil and remove them, or hope its something legit we just don't understand.

One Click De-Cripple released for Captivate to enable install of Non-Market Apps

I have developed One Click De-cripple to enable installation of non-market on the Captivate with one click. While many of you may be saying that Android Central's Sideload Wonder Machine already does this, my program will make a persistent change to enable non-market app installation without being attached to a computer. OCD was developed in Visual Studio 2010, therefore prerequisites will be that the USB drivers already be installed, that .NET 4.0 be installed, and the phone is already rooted. If you have not yet rooted your phone, I recommend "Samsung Galaxy S One Click Root" by TGA_Gunnman.
v1.0.0.2.
Changes:
Added PayPal Donate button. If you like my program, please donate to help finance my further development for the Captivate.
I already have non market apps enabled on my captivate via clshortfuses one click. Is this something different?thanks

Wow... don't know how I missed that one. I'm sure my project is using a similar mechanism but is geared specifically for the Captivate and at this time requires that the phone already be rooted.
I used his program to root and allow non market apps yesterday. Worked great for me but alot of people had problems. So go for it maybe yours will be good for those people.

DB edit through shell isn't that difficult. and YES... another one. Apparently some people have been experiencing issues with rageagainstthecage which is what SuperOneClick relies on. OCD does not rely on this mechanism and is designed for your average person with little or no *nix, coding, or CLI skills to free their phone. Gripe all you want but I'm sure someone will find it useful.
And without further ado...
A big thank you. It worked where others failed. Totally worth it!
Does this work on Eclair, Froyo or both?
I'm already rooted and have OCLF installed but I assume that doesn't matter, right?

It wasn't a gripe, just an observation. Maybe a better alternative is for a campaign to get AT&T to uncripple the platform.
Anyway, good deal helping those that need it.

OCD was designed and tested for 2.1 Eclair but will likely work on 2.2 Froyo. My understanding is that the manual process to enable non-market apps on 2.2 is identical to 2.1. If you are running 2.2 and have tried OCD, please share your experience.

OCD should work with OCLF but has not been tested with it. OCD requires that the phone already be rooted so you are already half-way there.

Worked like a charm....
finally got non market on my 2.2
I launch it and I get the black "Galaxy S" box but can't see anything in it but the half outline of two buttons. If the buttons have text, I can't read it.
Rooted w/ drivers installed. XP Pro SP3

No HTC Keyboard

It looks like my HTC keyboard is gone? I am using a very basic, I would think stock looking keyboard. How do I get the polished one back?
I use Smart Keyboard Pro and I use the white HTC keyboard. Well that one or the Samsung Galaxy S one (I loved it on my Vibrant). It also has the Android standard grey(ish) tint keyboard and iPhone as the 4 standard keyboards. you might want to check it out
*edit* oh I misunderstood your post I think. So are you talking about the Touch Input keyboard that comes installed already is missing??? That's the only polished one on there besides the Swype that comes standard. That dragon diction one is vile lol. If you lost one of the preinstalled keyboards I don't know what to say, sorry. I hope it gets resolved for you!
did a backup with titanium.. just found it. i can push it back on there now. good thing i backed up
Nope never mind. Can't get it back. Its htc touch input 2.0 or something. I can't get it back now. guess i'll never know until i can unroot and exchange device.

Edit: This isn't from the phone itself, but its working on my vibrant. Might work for you.
Just adb push /system/app
then reboot and it should be installed.

Of course you are! Come on.... I am sure some more simple method will be developed but until then you would want to follow the directions closely. Still in Beta as well and everything is not 100% but I can guarantee he got it rooted! It's just whether you can write to certain partitions or not.

If anyone tries this could you report back on how it goes. I'd be willing to buy a S6 today if this materializes into a true way to root the Verizon s6. What this is going to give you (if it works on your firmware version) is JUST root. So you will be able to do certain things but you CANNOT flash custom roms cause that has to do with the bootloader, and that bad boy is LOCKED tight. I'm not saying it won't happen but probably not. Hopefully someone starts developing Safestrap again (for this device). I left Verizon long ago because of their crap with locking down phones but I still thought you guys would like to know the info i found, seeing as it's a given that every Verizon device will make it next to impossible to achieve root. The root method for the Turbo was a different kind of exploit but I am pretty sure that this method will at least allow you to do some of the basic "must have" rooting tweaks. ie. Ad blocker, totally removing bloat, Hotspot mods, etc. Best thing to do is follow him over at the link I posted. Hope u guys get this all figured out and remember, this is just in beta right now, so if you can't get root that does not mean 100% for sure that this won't work 4 you. No frustrations I realise that its only in beta phase 1 so its possible with a simple fix it might become more stable. Plus like you said with this exploit you are only gonna be able to do a few limited things until someone comes along and makes something like safestrap. Plus im pretty sure the system will still be write protected. A lot of hurdles to overcome to fully modify this phone. Can you tell me what kernal date youre friend had that was success?

Question Is there a package disabler that works for the S22 Ultra?

Like the title says, is there a PD out there that works on the s22? I need to debloat this phone and the latest version of Package disabler pro doesn't seem to work on the S22. It just keeps telling you to keep clicking until it fails and has you download the knox check which then makes you keep clicking forever.

Yeah that's what I've have (3 device cloud copy), it doesn't work on the S22 ultra, at least it didn't for me. It works on my note 9, the older a8 tablet running 11 and the galaxy s8 that i traded in, but all it does on the s22u is keep telling me click and then download and install the knox apk then go back in and keep clicking forever.
It's a knox issue, and i think the guy needs to update something in it.

Never had to use it, sorry.
Part of my massive feedback to Samsung has been for a native package disable on their phones. Not happy with Samsung... they've been disappointing lately.
Use adb app control. It's a PC app but it's free and amazing. You'll never have to waste money on that fleecing app package disabled ever again.
He fixed package disabler pro. It works now
Fixed for now. I've heard the issues on that app for years and people having to pay for it multiple times or releasing a new app for new phones. Shady at best.

yup, the guy wants you to pay for it every year, but at least he had it fixed within hours.
he also said if it shows up in the play store (google removes it a lot) and you buy it there you're basically screwed for support cause he'll make you rebuy it off his website no matter how long you've owned it.
but it works and you dont have to be a device admin, and once you get it working it stays working.
Not advocating for him, just saying the few things that can be compliments for how he operates
Yeah I appreciate he does support his app. He's been around for a long time and that does say something. At least we have options and we can be happy with what we choose to use. The freedom of android
Anybody try App Freezer yet? Just got my phone and looking to set it up. App Freezer has worked flawlessly on my Note 10+ since day 1.
I haven't tried it or heard of it but I like looking at apps recommended by other users so I'll check it out.
I took the plunge with App Freezer. Even with ADB side loading, install was quick. If you're gonna do it, it's best to do it first, because you have to delete all accounts to set it up. It's worked great on my Note 10+, my Tab S6, and now seems to be running fine on the S22 Ultra.

Installed it to today. Tried every which way to get it to work on my LG G7 but wouldnt recognize my phone.
I normally use adb without it so I followed this guide and then installed the app. Not sure it'll help but worth a shot.
Installing adb and fastboot on Windows PC
Another thumbs up for adb app control. I downloaded it earlier this morning and prefer it to paying for PDP or CCSWE.
Alliance Shield X works great for me from the Play Store. It's free!

Fixed for now. I've heard the issues on that app for years and people having to pay for it multiple times or releasing a new app for new phones. Shady at best.

Yeah it's shady. I paid for it twice and then figured out what he was doing. If he puts it on the store and it gets taken off the store and he gets it put back on you have to buy it again or it won't work when you download to use it. If you get a new phone then it won't work and you have to buy it again. If you go to sleep at night and wake up the next morning then it won't work and you have to buy it again lol. I have two package disabler apps in my apps list and both of them are obsolete.
