I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

I notice you said ATT, but your profile shows the Canadian flag. So are you in Canada or US with ATT.
I know some Canadian carriers have some tether included in the 3G for free at no extra charge.

I dont see those apps in the marketplace. I take it you have to root?
I used EasyTether Pro. Works on my Mac fine. I have rooted the phone already, any way of getting a WiFi one now that it's rooted?
Ya you have to be rooted. Go to 4shared.com and search for barnacle.apk.

guys MOBILE AP in settings! that's native wifi teather ap stands for access point. there is an apk you need to delete or freaze to do it without the tethering plan. ill get details from captivate section and report back.
I can now confirm that Android-Wifi-Tether works.
I used Tether for Root Users 2.0.8-pre1 Wireless
I agree with Dani897, this will ultimately be a matter of replacing the AT&T Modded Wifi AP with the google stock version.

in titaniumbackp if you are rooted freeze ir uninstall "tetheringmanager0326.apk" should unlock it. you can also delete it from adb, rootexplorer, other root file managers as long as you mount read write in terminal emulator, or you can use terminal emulator.
i have a linux machine and use sshdroid to ssh into the phone. that's another way to do it if you get a windows application that handles ssh.

Hey guys. I just sucsusfully downloaded and tested the wireless tether app for android. I am not talking about the hotspot app that comes stock with the inspire. Im talking about this app (I cant post links untill i make 8 post lol, so copy and paste the url below)
Code:
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I downloaded the 2.0.7 version and it works flawlessly with the stock rooted rom.
Just wanted to share that.

An alternative is you can put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and download the app from the market.

wifi hotspot is application that comes stock on the inspire. It checks your account to see if you are paying for tethering. The other application (which requires rooting) does not require you to have tethering enabled on your account; hence free tethering !

Understood, but as several others have pointed out, the built in hotspot works perfect when rooted, so if one has to root to get this app, then what advantages does it have over the native tethering app to cause someone to want to have to add yet another app?

Ack! yep read that to fast! ~.~
However on a non rooted phone if you change the AP listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960058 it is not seen as an teathered laptop or other item. I have tested this and talked to ATT about it. unless its software in the system that makes that decision. i dont think its the app that reports back. i think ATT sends a code over their network to the sim to unlock teathering via their network. by changing the ap to what is listed above it looks like the phone is just hitting off of another service that may be needed for it. I guess ill find out when i get my bill for next month but this is what att told me that its just the phone requesting information from a different ap and no additional charges would be applied. *shrugs* hope their right

Yeah I think it has to do with which ROM the user is using when rooted... some say it still prompts, others not. Mine is enabled regardless of rooted or not, because I use a different APN which bypasses the wall.
I just rtied to use the portable wifi hotspot on my Charge and it will not allow me to use it without having a pop-up come up and say I have to pay an extra $30?

Verizon=/=T-Mobile.
Mobile Hotspot functionality was included for free as a promo when Verizon's 4G phones first launched, but that promo has ended.
Frankly, I can understand why: Verizon's 4G network is as fast or faster than many people's home connections (substantially faster, in many cases), so there would be no reason most people wouldn't just use their phone as their primary ISP. That kinda load would lead to one thing: bye-bye 4G speed!
my 4G connection on my cell phone = 12mb/s
my home connection = 2mb/s
WHAT.
I believe that you are also capped with how much data you can use when you activate that service.
Not capped but bandwidth will be throttled depending on usage.

Not true. I used 73 gb in my last cycle and 20gb + the cycle before that with no throttling or bandwith reduction. I get consistent speeds all the time, 30+ down 6+ up : ) I also signed up for the tethering package.

Download the latest wireless tether beta, open it and go into settings and click change device profile and scroll down to samsung fascinate and select it, then click on change setup method and select "Softap for Samsung (master)". That should give you infrastructure mode.
Not to take this too far off topic...but does anyone know the exact name of the .apk for Verizon Hotspot. I am rooted, and my phone shows the app available in the apps section, but I can not find it with either root explorer or Titanium Backup to either freeze it or remove it. Anyone know the exact name.apk for it.

You can no longer remove the hotspot app. It is tied into the framework on samsung froyo and gb builds. You could hide the launcher for it but that is it. When it gets removed you end up breaking wireless.

This is such great information. Thank you so much.
I hope this is an easy one, but it's puzzling me to no end on this phone.
Samsung Infuse- Rooted (of course) Running Bionix and the factory kernel.
I currently use either Barnacle or Wifi tether to tether to a laptop which has gone without a hitch in most cases (sometimes wifi manager gets in the way) but I am running into issues with other devices that I would like to connect with on the day to day basis with the same type of approach.
The problem is that my Infuse creates an Adhoc network instead of a normalish router gateway setup for the tether. This works just fine on a laptop, but when I try to apply this to other phones or tablets when I'm working in the field or just need a data connection really quick, I can't use my Infuse to do so as these devices usually do not support Adhoc networks.
The touchpad I have is my main concern at this time because in the case where I need to set up a phone without carrier data, I'm typically close to a Wifi spot of some kind. I can always use my personal phone, but because AT&T's network is a little faster in my area, I'd prefer to use it instead.
Does anyone know how to get a normal hotspot out of the infuse instead of an AdHoc?

If stock rooted, you need to freeze/remove tethermanager.apk
If running ANY custom ROM, these have already been removed. For Froyo, ignore the warnings in the Settings menu about tethering plans and just go ahead. For GB, it should have worked immediately if you weren't running a Hellraiser ROM.

Dense? How? I know information you don't. You clearly haven't even bothered to try the built-in tethering, otherwise you'd know that it does operate in AP mode. My Tab 10.1 does not support adhoc without hacks (which I have not performed as I have not needed to do so), yet it still has always happily connected to my Infuse whether the Infuse was running Infused 1.x, Infused 2.x, Cyanogenmod 7.1, and Mosaic VI (installed using Hellraiser Beta6)
See the attached screenshot from my laptop. Note the mode - MANAGED, not adhoc. And next time, think more and try doing some research before calling a kernel developer an idiot.

I just rooted using super one click, too easy. I was frustrated because it looked Like I wasnt able to use my Infuse as a wifi hotspot even though I was able to download App Freezer and render the stock tether manager inert. If I had not read this thread I wouldn't have known to ignore the AT&T warning about having to pay extra money for the data I have already bought. Ignored that bull and am using my iPad now with the Infuse as a hotspot. Life is good again and THANK ALL the helpful posters here.

Mine tells me that I need a tethering plan and auto-disconnects itself. Anyway around this besides paying for one? I'll use maybe a few times a month to get emails is all. Not downloading etc.
UPDATE: I bought Bloatfreeze and froze the tether.apk file. Now it did connect, I renamed network and chose my own password etc. and it worked perfectly. SO, the question is...since I FROZE the tether.apk will that hide my usage and thus ATT will not be able to detect that I used any tethering and not charge me $$$ for doing so.? Sorry if this is so noob, but I am a noobie to all this, but hey in 2 hours I've rooted, froze apps etc. so not TOO bad ;-) and just double checking.....
Thanks all!
Please confirm my beliefs..just so I can be safe.

Could you detail the exact steps you took to remove tetheringmanager?
Root, open a root-enabled file explorer, and remove /system/app/tetheringmanager.apk. It doesn't hurt to reboot afterwards.

OR turn it off or "FREEZE" it with Bloatfreezer works too if you have it.
WIFI tethering works awesome!
Or do what nearly everyone who came here came to do - run an alternate ROM that removes the carrier bloatware and bigbrotherware for you.
Would not have needed to buy anything to take care of AT&T's bigbrotherware, easy enough to remount system as read/write and delete the APK manually.
and if you absolutely need something that will try and simulate Netd or Softap, use Wireless tether for root users. It's been around since before native tethering and is as good if not better in some circumstances (has MAC address control). Plus it is a good workaround for my current kernel as I'm working on updating. (using it right now as a matter of fact.)

i tried installing a wifi tethering apk before reading this thread , i think it was the 3.1 beta 6, anyway i opened it and hit tether, it said running with errors.. i turned it off and uninstalled and now i cant get my wifi to work at all?? it shows my home router but wont sync up with it.. ive powered off a few times and even done a factory reset, still not working! any ideas why my wifi will not connect ?? just keeps saying scanning..connecting..disconnected!
Even with that .apk frozen or removed AT&T can still see you are tethering (by browser user agent string and data usage patterns) so be careful or you will find yourself in a tethering (4GB capped) plan. I'm not risking my grandfathered unlimited data for this.
If I'm full of crap here I'll find out soon enough. In the meantime, I'm putting on my fireproof suit.
All u need to do is root ur device and install titanium backup...once installed and running in titanium uninstall tether manager and u will have ur mobile hotspots. When u uninstall that at it does not check att network to see if u have a tethering plan

correct me if i'm wrong, but unless your tethering is excessive, AT&T is highly unlikely to mess with you (assuming you're on an "unlimited" plan).
Supposedly people are getting busted even after using only small amounts of data. Seems AT&T are seeing how data is used, not only how much. Lots of chatter on the net about this including lots on xda.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.
