{Q} Mobile hotspot? Have to pay an extra $30?? - Verizon Droid Charge

I just rtied to use the portable wifi hotspot on my Charge and it will not allow me to use it without having a pop-up come up and say I have to pay an extra $30?
Is there anyway to get around this?
I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, and this is not required, nor does it ever check for any kind of subscription like the charge does?
It's running GummyCharged rom..
Thanks for any help

I am new to Verizon and I was told by a sales rep on Verizon chat that the hotspot was included in my $29 data unlimited package.................WRONG.............. I activated my phone with 8 days ina billing cycle and learned they charge $30 a month......Thats when I decided I was going to root........running Humble 1.42 now and typing this on a laptop tethere to the charge via wireless tether.........

Use the wifi app beta. Its in the themes and apps section to download. Its free tethering and Verizon can't tell. The will only see alt of data usage.

Verizon=/=T-Mobile.
Mobile Hotspot functionality was included for free as a promo when Verizon's 4G phones first launched, but that promo has ended.
Frankly, I can understand why: Verizon's 4G network is as fast or faster than many people's home connections (substantially faster, in many cases), so there would be no reason most people wouldn't just use their phone as their primary ISP. That kinda load would lead to one thing: bye-bye 4G speed!

my 4G connection on my cell phone = 12mb/s
my home connection = 2mb/s
WHAT.

I believe that you are also capped with how much data you can use when you activate that service.

Not capped but bandwidth will be throttled depending on usage.

Not true. I used 73 gb in my last cycle and 20gb + the cycle before that with no throttling or bandwith reduction. I get consistent speeds all the time, 30+ down 6+ up : ) I also signed up for the tethering package.

Is there an app that allows for Infrastructure Mode? I'm planning on buying a Galaxy Tab and for some reason, these things don't do Ad-Hoc connections.

Download the latest wireless tether beta, open it and go into settings and click change device profile and scroll down to samsung fascinate and select it, then click on change setup method and select "Softap for Samsung (master)". That should give you infrastructure mode.

Not to take this too far off topic...but does anyone know the exact name of the .apk for Verizon Hotspot. I am rooted, and my phone shows the app available in the apps section, but I can not find it with either root explorer or Titanium Backup to either freeze it or remove it. The name is just not logical...
Anyone know the exact name.apk for it.
Thanks

You can no longer remove the hotspot app. It is tied into the framework on samsung froyo and gb builds. You could hide the launcher for it but that is it. When it gets removed you end up breaking wireless.

Request: A Wifi Hotspot App -Turns your phone into a wifi hotspot

Hi, I have a great suggestion for an app.
In Windows 7 you can download connectify and it will turn your computer into a wifi hotspot..an app similar to this for android would be a great idea and find lots of use not to mention tons of $$$!
I do know that there is a such app on the iphone (called Mywi) but it is only avaialble when you "jailbreak" but android market seems much more lenient since there are many tethering apps available like PDAnet but they are restricted on the iphone

That is for rooted devices only. I mean for people who would rather not "tamper" with their devices and leave it as stock
well those people can wait to upgrade to android 2.2, since it's part of the stock android rom.
Or they can pay sprint 20.00 per month. But for me I'd rather have full access to my phone.(I'm just saying). If ur concern about violating term of contact I think there is an unrooting thread out there somewhere.
Go ahead give it a shot.....EVO 4G

Actually, it is. Wether it makes it to your device or not depends on hardware/carrier and what not. It is removed from CM's Magic ROM, because the Magic does not have the correct chipset to support it.
It's likely most carriers will remove this to 'protect' their networks... So rooting is probably your best option for this. The issue is that root is needed from a technical aspect in order to perform the changes needed to the networking stack etc.
So for now it's either froyo with it included (needs your telco to be cool about tethering) or use the wifi tether app and root
I was scared to root my phone due to the fact that I was new at it and could brick my phone and lose my warranty.
But I grew a pair, and I'm rooted and do not regret it....

The USB (wired) tether *is* included but you have to pay for it-not free.
With the way carriers are concerning tethering please let me know
what carriers have this wireless tether feature preinstalled?

Are you telling me that wireless tethering is native to a stock
ROM from all Wireless providers and that they "choose" to leave it in or
omit it?
I'm sure if this is the case...it is a purely on a technicality.
Do you know of ANY stock ROM out there in existence that
leaves this feature there for its users (so that the wireless provider)
loses millions of dollars in revenue?
Well considering that native wifi tethering is new to 2.2, I guess we'll have to wait and see who pulls it and who keeps it.
And how does it lose millions in revenue anyway? I pay for a 6 gig data bucket. If I go over said data bucket, I pay through the nose for it.

Simply really.
Count how many smart phone users there are that purchased
a smart phone that may have the capability to (tether) either wireless
or wired, and add $20.00 per head on a plan...
In other words, companies don't want you to use your wireless phone's data
to operate other wireless enabled devices *unless* you pay a premium to do so.
Here in the US we have "unlimited" data plans when using the phone.
Verizon Wireless, and other network providers want that extra coin since you
are operating a device on their network.

Or must you take additional steps to enable this feature?

I am in Europe, yes. The wireless access point is simply like connectify on your phone. However, my carrier, O2, some how detected that I was tethering my laptop, and after a couple of days, managed to prevent that working. But my girlfriend's desire continued to connect successfully.
It is a default app that you simply toggle on or off.

I have the DX with verizon wireless. It came with wireless hotspot installed but i would have to pay for it in order to utilize it. I rooted and now use Barnacle located on the Market. Have to have root access as well as busybox installed for it to work though. But yes 2.1 and 2.2 come with it stock out of the box. You just have to subscribe for it to work. But I like it free . I have used barnacle for up to 3 Laptops at the same time and it works great for me.

Tethering?

I can't seem to get barnacle or wifitether to work on this phone. Has anyone else been successful in tethering with the infuse?

I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.

[HOW-TO] Get wifi-tether working on Charge

All,
Not sure if this has been discussed previously or not but if you would like to get wifi tethering working in infrastructure mode on the Charge follow the steps below. Some people are claiming that Verizon is monitoring 3rd party wifi tethering and will bill you for that usage. So use at your own risk.
1. Follow the steps here to root your Stock EE4 image to root. I chose not to install one of the ROMs yet and I am using imnut's PBJT non-OC voodoo kernel.
2. Once you have root (verified by the Superuser app appearing in your Applications). Install android-wifi-tether 3.1-beta2. This app can be found here (need to allow external sources).
3. Once installed open the Wireless Tether application and go to Settings. Change the device profile to "Samsung Fascinate" and you should be good to go from that point.
Happy tethering.
One thing I am uncertain of is this "hotspot_event_monitor" driver that is loaded. djp592 discusses a kernel mod here that removes this driver but I could not find an explanation of what it does exactly. Anyone know?

What is your source that VZ is NOT using their DPI boxes?
Oh wait, they do already, otherwise they would have the near-real-time data usage up on their website.
I would presume it's more the actual packet, as it would look much different between a DC and your laptop. There are many other methods that a DPI can use to figure it out. Also most wifi tethers are using nat, so mac address based makes no sense.

ok, then more to the point, has anyone actually had their data throttled or received charges on their bill?
No, and I Wi-Fi tethered moderately on my Droid 1 since its release date (first with wifi-tether and then Barnacle when it came out because I like Barnacle better), on Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread.
And now I still tether on my Droid Charge with Barnacle and we don't see any extra fees. Of course, I just switched to the Gingerbread leak, so we'll see what happens.

No... I have been wifi tethering for years with the droid 1, droid x and now the droid charge. I have used wifi tether 2.0.7 and infrastructure with wifi tether 3.1beta. My bill never changes.

All,
Not sure if this has been discussed previously or not but if you would like to get wifi tethering working in infrastructure mode on the Charge do the following:

I would like to add that after step 3 I had to change the setup-method to softap for samsung (master) i think this step is important to tether with infrastructure. It works fine on GB 2.3.4 running humble 2.1
That must be a Gingerbread thing. I am running stock EE4 ROM and "Auto" worked just fine.
One thing I did run into is that after turning off tethering you need to may need to cycle the wifi adapter to be able to associate to a wifi network.

2.0.7 works much better
And
Verizon is tracking all mac addresses with none paid tethering activity that are using wifi tether and barnacle. They will throttle you down and charge the data back to you on your bill. Fyi

Can you elaborate why you think 2.0.7 works better? On the Charge 2.0.7 seems to only support ad-hoc tethering.
The reason I went down this path is not for tethering per-se but just to be able to create a WPA network between my phone and laptop. Ad-hoc networking only supports WEP.
I wonder how verizon is conducting the monitoring? Are they just looking for your wifi adapter going into master mode? Or actually looking for evidence of tethering (i.e. iptables, dnsmasq)?

Throttle, yes. BIG TIME. Billed for it? Not at all.

i found on some forum a while back that on GB tethering in logged in a database. the uid is 0 and the only thing that connects to the net using root(0) as the uid is a tethering app. i'd have to find that thread again and i'm not sure how far they got in that.
just found it: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/g...cking/24394-tethering-use-being-recorded.html

I doubt this. It is highly unlikely the tethering app rebroadcasts PHY-layer information. Far more likely is it retransmits L7 information. It is acting as a router, after all.

I will just say what's in the public realm. Try somewhere like dslreports and see what people are saying. There are a lot of posts from people that sound like they are absolutely sure it's sandvine.
If that is true, and you know what they are capable of, you know that it's not anything "on the phone".
Thanks for this, was wondering what I had to do to get it running in infrastructure.
If Verizon slows me down or tries to charge me for tethering, I'm just going to sell the phone and pay the ETF. I got the phone new for REALLY cheap, so I could probably make enough from it to not only pay the ETF and cover the cost of the phone, but come out on top by 20 bucks or so.
i know that on my iphone which im usuing for sh*** and giggles, i have a hack that makes apn adjustments that mask the tethered usage so Verizon cant tell that im using the phone to tether. to them it just looks like normal browsing. is there not an adjustment like that for android?
i for one have been tether for free on my droids for years and never had any issues. but on the flip side i never used more than 5gb tethering either....

I would like to know this as well!
I recently updated from 2.0.1 which was reasonably reliable on my Charge to 3.1 beta6 and have had no issues. Connecting via the setup as described in this post and connecting via infrastructure with WPA2 encryption. Can't beat it.

[Q] Tethering not working?

I have the Verizon Galaxy S3, and i am trying to get a free tether app or tether for free basically. I have the unlimited data plan so that may limit some of my options. I am also rooted n flashed the JellyWiz RLS12 ROM, so if anyone can help please do.
Thanks

Not any more than any other tether app. It is not their app. It is native android tether built into ICS/JB. They hijacked your tether and put an Icon and authorization on top of it in framework. It is not a Verizon app. Toggle just accesses tether in framework as it was designed in Android. 4GB + files are pretty easy to pick up on the network regardless of how you do it. Many have reported using 50-100 GB/month with no problem.

yeah ive seen one with 250GB in 1 month. I was like... wouldnt they notice or charge you lol. Thanks for the clarification though, cause i thought the icon up there was using Verizons "pre built" bloatware stuff that they added and using that means youre using hotspot and agreeing to their terms.
Also the first time I used toggle it didn't activate till I manually went in and configured it. Then it works without issue. Just a heads up.
