[HOW-TO] Get wifi-tether working on Charge - Verizon Droid Charge

All,
Not sure if this has been discussed previously or not but if you would like to get wifi tethering working in infrastructure mode on the Charge follow the steps below. Some people are claiming that Verizon is monitoring 3rd party wifi tethering and will bill you for that usage. So use at your own risk.
1. Follow the steps here to root your Stock EE4 image to root. I chose not to install one of the ROMs yet and I am using imnut's PBJT non-OC voodoo kernel.
2. Once you have root (verified by the Superuser app appearing in your Applications). Install android-wifi-tether 3.1-beta2. This app can be found here (need to allow external sources).
3. Once installed open the Wireless Tether application and go to Settings. Change the device profile to "Samsung Fascinate" and you should be good to go from that point.
Happy tethering.
One thing I am uncertain of is this "hotspot_event_monitor" driver that is loaded. djp592 discusses a kernel mod here that removes this driver but I could not find an explanation of what it does exactly. Anyone know?

2.0.7 works much better
And
Verizon is tracking all mac addresses with none paid tethering activity that are using wifi tether and barnacle. They will throttle you down and charge the data back to you on your bill. Fyi

What is your source that VZ is NOT using their DPI boxes?
Oh wait, they do already, otherwise they would have the near-real-time data usage up on their website.
I would presume it's more the actual packet, as it would look much different between a DC and your laptop. There are many other methods that a DPI can use to figure it out. Also most wifi tethers are using nat, so mac address based makes no sense.

ok, then more to the point, has anyone actually had their data throttled or received charges on their bill?

No, and I Wi-Fi tethered moderately on my Droid 1 since its release date (first with wifi-tether and then Barnacle when it came out because I like Barnacle better), on Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread.
And now I still tether on my Droid Charge with Barnacle and we don't see any extra fees. Of course, I just switched to the Gingerbread leak, so we'll see what happens.

No... I have been wifi tethering for years with the droid 1, droid x and now the droid charge. I have used wifi tether 2.0.7 and infrastructure with wifi tether 3.1beta. My bill never changes.

I would like to add that after step 3 I had to change the setup-method to softap for samsung (master) i think this step is important to tether with infrastructure. It works fine on GB 2.3.4 running humble 2.1

That must be a Gingerbread thing. I am running stock EE4 ROM and "Auto" worked just fine.
One thing I did run into is that after turning off tethering you need to may need to cycle the wifi adapter to be able to associate to a wifi network.

Can you elaborate why you think 2.0.7 works better? On the Charge 2.0.7 seems to only support ad-hoc tethering.
The reason I went down this path is not for tethering per-se but just to be able to create a WPA network between my phone and laptop. Ad-hoc networking only supports WEP.
I wonder how verizon is conducting the monitoring? Are they just looking for your wifi adapter going into master mode? Or actually looking for evidence of tethering (i.e. iptables, dnsmasq)?

i found on some forum a while back that on GB tethering in logged in a database. the uid is 0 and the only thing that connects to the net using root(0) as the uid is a tethering app. i'd have to find that thread again and i'm not sure how far they got in that.

I doubt this. It is highly unlikely the tethering app rebroadcasts PHY-layer information. Far more likely is it retransmits L7 information. It is acting as a router, after all.

I will just say what's in the public realm. Try somewhere like dslreports and see what people are saying. There are a lot of posts from people that sound like they are absolutely sure it's sandvine.
If that is true, and you know what they are capable of, you know that it's not anything "on the phone".

Thanks for this, was wondering what I had to do to get it running in infrastructure.
If Verizon slows me down or tries to charge me for tethering, I'm just going to sell the phone and pay the ETF. I got the phone new for REALLY cheap, so I could probably make enough from it to not only pay the ETF and cover the cost of the phone, but come out on top by 20 bucks or so.

i know that on my iphone which im usuing for sh*** and giggles, i have a hack that makes apn adjustments that mask the tethered usage so Verizon cant tell that im using the phone to tether. to them it just looks like normal browsing. is there not an adjustment like that for android?
i for one have been tether for free on my droids for years and never had any issues. but on the flip side i never used more than 5gb tethering either....

I would like to know this as well!

I recently updated from 2.0.1 which was reasonably reliable on my Charge to 3.1 beta6 and have had no issues. Connecting via the setup as described in this post and connecting via infrastructure with WPA2 encryption. Can't beat it.

that would be my guess. it used to be a requirement that your kernel supported netfilter (iptables). dunno if it still is offhand.

Have you tried to forget the connection on your laptop and then re-establish the connection with your phone?
I have been using wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk go into your settings and Change Device-Profile to "HTC Evo 4G" and also click the checkbox for "Routing fix" using those settings is what I have set for it to allow you to use Wifi Tether using an infrastructure connection instead of the ad-hoc connection it defaults to so it shows up to your computer just like any other access point would or the default wifi tether app on the phone that will cost money soon.
After installing the MR2 planejane ROM I was doing the de-bloat and came across an app called TetheringGuard2.1.0 or something like that. I think Verizon is really trying to screw people over. There are various articles around also stating that the Gingerbread update will have safeguards built in order to prevent people from using tethering applications. I simply removed this stupid app using Titanium Backup and Wireless Tether seems to be working just fine for now...

Which wireless tethering app do you use?

Now that Verizon's Mobile Hotspot promotion is done, what are you using to tether with your rooted Droid Charge? I am trying to use Barnacle but it keeps giving me errors.
Thanks!
Simple, Pay for the native app.

but whenever I search for it on my Charge I can't seem to find it on the market place, and clicking the direct link just gives me an error. Hope someone has found a good wireless tether, going away for the weekend and could really use one!

+1for OpenGarden. I have been using it on my Thunderbolt for a weeks now and haven't seen any issues.
I loaded Barnacle and rooted my phone last night, so far so good. But I am going to also try Open Garden to see it it meets my need (see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158476 )
so just to clarify guys, if use this tethering program, it can help me save a few bucks comparedd to paing for verizon's optional tethering service? ;-)
I've tried both the tethering programs in this thread and neither are detected on my PSP/NDS, the app also doesn't ask or tell me the SSID or passphrase, anyone know a REAL wireless tethering app where you can make it act pretty much like a router..?

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.

Verizon=/=T-Mobile.
Mobile Hotspot functionality was included for free as a promo when Verizon's 4G phones first launched, but that promo has ended.
Frankly, I can understand why: Verizon's 4G network is as fast or faster than many people's home connections (substantially faster, in many cases), so there would be no reason most people wouldn't just use their phone as their primary ISP. That kinda load would lead to one thing: bye-bye 4G speed!
my 4G connection on my cell phone = 12mb/s
my home connection = 2mb/s
WHAT.
I believe that you are also capped with how much data you can use when you activate that service.
Not capped but bandwidth will be throttled depending on usage.

Not true. I used 73 gb in my last cycle and 20gb + the cycle before that with no throttling or bandwith reduction. I get consistent speeds all the time, 30+ down 6+ up : ) I also signed up for the tethering package.

You can no longer remove the hotspot app. It is tied into the framework on samsung froyo and gb builds. You could hide the launcher for it but that is it. When it gets removed you end up breaking wireless.

Wifi tether that isn't adhoc?

I hope this is an easy one, but it's puzzling me to no end on this phone.
Samsung Infuse- Rooted (of course) Running Bionix and the factory kernel.
I currently use either Barnacle or Wifi tether to tether to a laptop which has gone without a hitch in most cases (sometimes wifi manager gets in the way) but I am running into issues with other devices that I would like to connect with on the day to day basis with the same type of approach.
The problem is that my Infuse creates an Adhoc network instead of a normalish router gateway setup for the tether. This works just fine on a laptop, but when I try to apply this to other phones or tablets when I'm working in the field or just need a data connection really quick, I can't use my Infuse to do so as these devices usually do not support Adhoc networks.
The touchpad I have is my main concern at this time because in the case where I need to set up a phone without carrier data, I'm typically close to a Wifi spot of some kind. I can always use my personal phone, but because AT&T's network is a little faster in my area, I'd prefer to use it instead.
Does anyone know how to get a normal hotspot out of the infuse instead of an AdHoc?

Settings->Wireless and Networks-> Mobile AP.
If stock rooted, you need to freeze/remove tethermanager.apk
If running ANY custom ROM, these have already been removed. For Froyo, ignore the warnings in the Settings menu about tethering plans and just go ahead. For GB, it should have worked immediately if you weren't running a Hellraiser ROM.

Dense? How? I know information you don't. You clearly haven't even bothered to try the built-in tethering, otherwise you'd know that it does operate in AP mode. My Tab 10.1 does not support adhoc without hacks (which I have not performed as I have not needed to do so), yet it still has always happily connected to my Infuse whether the Infuse was running Infused 1.x, Infused 2.x, Cyanogenmod 7.1, and Mosaic VI (installed using Hellraiser Beta6)
See the attached screenshot from my laptop. Note the mode - MANAGED, not adhoc. And next time, think more and try doing some research before calling a kernel developer an idiot.

Way to be dense.
Even the built in tether application transmits as an Adhoc.

Rooted using stock wifi
I just rooted using super one click, too easy. I was frustrated because it looked Like I wasnt able to use my Infuse as a wifi hotspot even though I was able to download App Freezer and render the stock tether manager inert. If I had not read this thread I wouldn't have known to ignore the AT&T warning about having to pay extra money for the data I have already bought. Ignored that bull and am using my iPad now with the Infuse as a hotspot. Life is good again and THANK ALL the helpful posters here.

Only pertains to Hellraiser

Mine tells me that I need a tethering plan and auto-disconnects itself. Anyway around this besides paying for one? I'll use maybe a few times a month to get emails is all. Not downloading etc.
UPDATE: I bought Bloatfreeze and froze the tether.apk file. Now it did connect, I renamed network and chose my own password etc. and it worked perfectly. SO, the question is...since I FROZE the tether.apk will that hide my usage and thus ATT will not be able to detect that I used any tethering and not charge me $$$ for doing so.? Sorry if this is so noob, but I am a noobie to all this, but hey in 2 hours I've rooted, froze apps etc. so not TOO bad ;-) and just double checking.....
Thanks all!
Please confirm my beliefs..just so I can be safe.

Thanks a million!!!!!
Could you detail the exact steps you took to remove tetheringmanager?
Root, open a root-enabled file explorer, and remove /system/app/tetheringmanager.apk. It doesn't hurt to reboot afterwards.

OR turn it off or "FREEZE" it with Bloatfreezer works too if you have it.
WIFI tethering works awesome!
Or do what nearly everyone who came here came to do - run an alternate ROM that removes the carrier bloatware and bigbrotherware for you.
Would not have needed to buy anything to take care of AT&T's bigbrotherware, easy enough to remount system as read/write and delete the APK manually.
and if you absolutely need something that will try and simulate Netd or Softap, use Wireless tether for root users. It's been around since before native tethering and is as good if not better in some circumstances (has MAC address control). Plus it is a good workaround for my current kernel as I'm working on updating. (using it right now as a matter of fact.)
what is the security key tho?

Um, you set it and that's the password you need to put into any device that's connecting?
I'm assuming you chose WPA2. If it's Open I have no idea why it's asking for a key.

[Q] Wireless Tether for root users

Hi, I have my LG G2X rooted and installed the application Wireless Tether for Root users. It works perfectly fine and all, but it says it's missing a kernel and I can't access the control and set a password. Can anyone help me with this problem?
I don't think you need an app for wireless tether...
I think there is lol, I don't feel like paying for the mobile hotspot built in
There is no app for tethering. Its built into the rom.

Maybe everyone over looked this post, so I'm quoting it and reiterating it.
WiFi Tethering is built in to the ROM, I can tether with my phone wired or wireless at no additional charge and I don't have and additional tethering service. In fact, I'm tethered right now.

So the built in tethering on the G2x called "Mobile Hotspot" is free?

*Smacks forehead*
Ok, first off, Mobile Hotspot is something else, it has something to do with accessing T-mobile hotspots with your phone.
Wifi Tethering is something else. Tethering is connecting your computer to your phone and using your phone's data connection to access the web, essentially, and literally, using your phone as a modem.
If the later is what you want that's what I and the other posters are referring to. See screenshot.

Okay, I know exactly what you're talking about now. When I enable that wireless tether, it says additional charges may apply. I have unlimited data, so will this be an additional charge to my bill? That is the only reason why I have not used this...

Sorry about that, I'm sort of a noob.. Well are you running a custom rom or the original rom?
Doesn't matter, just like the data throttling, a custom ROM will not change if you're charged for something or not. And the settings are the same as on the stock ROM.
Thank you! Will try this out.
Also, FYI, WiFi tethering eats battery like it's going out of style, so either have your phone charging if you absolutely refuse to use wired tethering or, use wired tethering.

You must be rooted to avoid charges.
