How in The Hell... - Captivate General

Good morning (well, it's morning on the east coast anyway...) gentlemen and women.
I come to you in need of ideas.
I had a Captivate on MIUI since last June, but my baby's charger port broke on me maybe 3 weeks ago.
After struggling with the concept of letting it go, I ordered a replacement last Monday, which came Wednesday. I rooted it, updated to GB Bootloaders, and threw an ICS ROM on it yesterday with no problem. Got all the apps I care about and my texts back. I love it.
Buuut, I have about 10 GB of music on my old Captivate, and almost none of it is on my Google Music. My laptop's charger port is broken too, and it would take weeks to get it all back on my ancient 2001 desktop. How could I get it all off, preferably by today, and on to my new phone under these circumstances?
Thanks in advance.

Look in the market for adb wireless. Once you have it installed, activate it on your phone, and follow the directions to connect to it from your pc. Then just issue an adb pull (your music directory) from the pc.
You may need adb installed on the PC as well.
Or, if you have a micro SD, you can move the files in small batches between phones.

You can use airdroid which is available for free on the market. I love airdroid. I've transferred about 6 gigs of concert footage from my phone to my pc thru my wifi!

It won't let me thank you jmtheiss, I guess I have spread some first? I don't use many forums with thanks systems lol, so I'm not absolutely clear.
But I will be giving these ideas a try. Thanks a lot guys!

That's the solution I would have had them try first also.

also contact www.mobiletechvideos.com they can repair your usb port!!!

sign up for Box, download the app, sign in with your phone and get 50GB online storage for free.

I think I'll be doing this. I actually went with the old fashioned way and just slowly dragged files from my phone to my 1 GB microSD, dragged that to my school laptop (otherwise useless outside of school. No Wi-Fi and restricted in just about every way), and then dragged those to my new phone.
Took forever, but it worked lol.

Seems to be a decent service with good quality vids, but I have a Netflix account so...
Quick questions.
1. How long does it take to download?
2. Are they stored on SD card?
3. What type of file & is it encrypted? (can we just copy and paste to our laptops and it will work?)
4. Since there is people getting the whole ROM scene going, if we flash a ROM do we loose the file and cant download or can we just like re-download it again?

They are stored on sd and you can just copy them over and sign in again. Like I said earlier it just needs hdmi support.

I purchased "Unknown" but it sucks that I can't watch it through my damn TV! I know one of these developers is going to figure out some sort of work around.
Bought the directors cut of Donnie Darko, and accidentally bought Order of the Phoenix. Kind of wish they had a confirm screen before actually buying it so I could have opted out
I still got mine. Not planning on using so I'll sell it to who ever wants it.

ordered an atrix 2 today, have some questions

so after a call with some complaints on my service, i ended up getting an upgrade a month early, the A2 for $24.99 and $20 off of my bills, lol.
anyhow, i went with the atrix 2 because it seemed like a great phone at a great price. however, i was kind of pushed into the atrix 2 because i did not have time to really research the purchase.
after reading some reviews now, i see that some are complaining about call volume. i had this problem with my x10 and i hated the x10 because of the in call volume. how is the income volume on the atrix 2? is it as bad as what i'm reading? has a recent update fixed it?
also, how is the camera? shutter speed? clarity? etc?
i have a nexus s now, recently sold my x10.
I havent noticed the call volume being quiet? Just as loud as my Atrix 1 / BB Torch.
Camera is good, opens quick and my pictures have been clear. Only issue is that the first picture is mostly corrupt. Supposedly there will be a firmware update to fix this.
Loving mine as well... only one complaint is the first pic not saving

No problems here at all, loving mine! I think some of the issues they're having are related to their microSD card
I have had my A2 now for two weeks, no complaints with call volume at all and I too came from an X10. The only issue I've had so far is with my sdcard becoming read only (causing pics not to save, cant use zedge, cant take screenshots, cant save any media to it) intermittently. It seems the cause of that was the class 10 sdcard I had in it, apparently this phone doesnt play well with class 10 cards so I picked up a 16gb class 4 card last night and so far so good.

Try hooking your phone up to a computer and making a backup up your microSD card. Then erase all the contents on your card. Remove the card and then reinsert it and let your phone format the card. After its done transfer your backup back to your card. This has been helping with some peoples problems. As stated earlier though our phones aren't playing well with clads 10 microSD cards. Hopefully this will help you.
My experience has been just the opposite. I originally purchased a 16gb class 4 PNY card and I had the aforementioned read only issues. I then exchanged it for a 16gb class 10 PNY and all has been good since. and that has been about 3 weeks ago. Go figure?

SD card problems

Some apps that I've pushed to my external SD card suddenly show up as not installed and I then have to reinstall from the market. Any ideas what's wrong?
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Right now the phone is having problems when you store any apps on the SD card. Make sure they are all stored internally and that should solve your problems.
you have 4gb of app storage, there's no need for apps2sd especially since it breaks the apps, sd card and everything else.
But for me such as with evernote the data is stored on the SD card and the app fails when the SD card unmount itself and I have to resync it.

Yes, theres a bug in the software causing this to happen when apps are installed on the sdcard. Just make sure all ur apps are in internal storage and you should be fine, or is 4gb not enough?

never use the atrix 2 to format your card, do it with a card reader in windows
I'm on my 2nd Atrix 2. The first one had trouble with the sdcard as most of the people are writing about on XDA so I got a replacement. The 2nd one works perfectly with the same sdcard installed. In addition to fixing the sdcard issues, wireless works more reliably and call quality is better indicating they may have had some hardware quality control issues vs. software issues. If you're within your 30 days return period I would suggest getting a replacement.

I've been monitoring this and moved many of my non essential apps to my SD card for testing purposes. Then I set my phone so any updates to apps has to be approved, none of my apps nor is the phone auto update.
Worked fine for two weeks until I finally updated three apps. Then I lost 7 apps on the SD card

I'm trying to be patient for that update. But, it's a tough bone to swallow spending $65 for an SD card just to store MP3s on. It would be nice to have some sort of rough ETA from Moto on the update (i.e., before my 30 days is up). I'd try a Samsung Infuse, but that would be taking a step backward in video and processor.

Try a warranty exchange. I promise the issues you have seen tylercarter, is not exactly what everyone else has, especially with google contacts disapperaing. If you bought it at ATT they are decent if you go into a store. If you bought it at best buy forget it, even 1 day past 30 day they will tell you too bad so sad. ATT took care of me three times even at 40 days, they let me switch to a different phone each time. That was back in march so.... give it a try.
I hate to say it, but fixes for this issues with the SDcard most likely will never come. Now if we can get the source code for this phone, then WE can fix the issue much like cyanogen did those type of things for many phones. I will definitely do the fix for it once we get that.

Has there been an MTP fix for Mac?

Is the no mpt for pissing anyone else off, because i'm at the point where i'm ready to sell, please don't link me to those crappy .sh files they work but they're annoying and don't access the internal portion
Idk what you're asking but you should use "Airdroid" in the Play Store for wireless file transfers from computer to GSIII.

To anyone who doesn't know:
The GS3 doesn't communicate with a Mac out of the box (And it is a royal pain in the a). You need a special program from Google called Android File Transfer.
To the OP: no, there's no fix, at least that I know of, and trust me I've looked... And it sucks. Everyone always suggests these programs from the play store, but they all SUCK!!
Android File Transfer was amazing, when it worked. All we can really hope for is a fix from either Google or Samsung to make it work again.
Samsung has a program called kies, which still sucks but is OK for syncing music...
Personally I've resorted to boot camp. Whenever I need to sync something I just boot up windows on my Mac.

google samsung sg3 easy ums fix, you will be able to mount external sd card easily not internal , it will look like another drive. works with my mid 2011 macbook air with snow mountain lion.
as for the internal portion , your only choice is airdroid. it does every thing, delete , upload , etc... airdroid does nto require active tethering, passive is just fine. I personally use airdroid a lot.
P.s. root required for ums fix ( like every android phone , without root , the phone is as useless as an iphone )

Idk if the new nexus is going to have the same storage system as the GS3. I'm not too techy with the internals so not sure how it all works...

What rom are you on? The vralg7 (or whatever it was called)(4.0.4?) OTA made Android File Transfer not work with GS3 anymore.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
yeah all these f'ing OTA updates did for me was make my phone black screen of death CRASH all the time requiring battery pull, break Android File Transfer to my Mac, and make my phone run hotter. Which is probably because of that stupid Verizon remote "assistance" crap bloat they put in so they can probably record everything we are doing.
Verizon screws everything up. Wish another carrier had as good of LTE. I am probably going to exchange this for Note II because of these problems. I expect VZ to pay for it or most of it.
Unless Google goes back on their work, the MTP standard will continue. I see it as unlikely for connectivity to Macs to improve for ICS+ phones until Google provides a better tool.

What I've been running into on Apple's Support Forums is that AFT seems to work best only up to 10.6, some have had success with 10.7 and most are reporting absolute failure with Mountain Lion. I'd use AirDroid but my MacPro doesn't have a WiFi antennae, unless it can go through my router somehow as Kies Air does?
Has there been any progress on this?

Considering getting a Note 5. Have some questions

Hey all. I'm considering switching to a Note 5. I currently have a Note 3. I switched to t mobile from att last week and picked up a LG V10 which I am supposed to start using tomorrow. I'm now considering this phone. I had a concern about battery life but from what I see here after rooting and running a custom ROM battery life seems great. I'm concerned about the storage with no sd card. If I got this phone, I'd get the 64 gb version. I'm wondering if samsung has any solution to uploading your photos/videos while on the go. I'm going on vacation for 10 days next month and I know this limited amount of storage wouldn't be enough unless I uploading my photos and videos somewhere each night. I won't have my pc with me. Does samsung have a place to upload? If not where do you upload? Thanks

I use Google photos as well it's imo the nicest and most user friendly cloud upload for photos. However you could auto upload to dropbox, or onedrive. If you have a Microsoft 365 account you get 1 TB of onedrive space included with your account plus you get an additional 100 GB via a Samsung offer when you buy the Note 5. I use Google photos as my primary and onedrive as a redundancy backup.
I thought I was going to miss the sd card slot as well but I don't. I got the 64 and I also carry a 64 GB sandisk otg/usb combo drive which you get usually find on sale at reasonable prices on amazon.

Having had both, the note 3 and the 5 honestly, I think I should have went with the 4. I like the 5 and all but I do miss the SD card, I use Google photos as has been mentioned but having to delete photos and videos is aggravating to me. Between photos, videos, music and apps I am out of space, granted, I have the 32gb but the 64gb would be the same in time.
I have not rooted this phone, been holding out for Samsung pay and my bank to work together, says coming soon. Regardless tho, that's something else I am tired of...I should have stayed with nexus devices in regard to root the more I think about it lol. Anyways, getting off topic now.
I got the 5 because costco had a $250 rebate, Samsung had the holiday promotion and Samsung pay had a $100 credit for purchasing from samsung.com if you sign up for and activate a card. When I added all that up it was just to good of a deal to pass up on.
Just get one of these.

This looks interesting. I worry if I have the phone in my pocket with this in it it might break.

You only have it in when you need it, otherwise you put it back in its little holder and keep it on your keys.

The Note 5 is so much better than the 4. I think the 3 was better than the 4 but the 5 is a great device as long as you can get over the storage. I think a Keychain OTG thumb drive is a good compromise for those with additional storage needs.
Yes please dont fall into the trap of so many being dependent on an sd card. There are so many choices to use and honestly 50 gb of data on your phone just because is a lil crazy. You have as mentioned above plenty of storage alternatives and videos I simply upload to Youtube and privately share or watch.
People seem to forget that sometimes phones take a dump, get lost, stolen or break. Now with your whole life on the phone what next?
Great phone, first time not rooting in 6 years or so and with package disabler and a conscious effort to effectively keep my phone from being bogged with crap things are working out lovely.... Plus I use and love Samsung pay

I have a thought......
Because of Qi charging. The Micro SD will be seldom used. The Note 5 is slick so most people will end up using a case....so..... I am waiting for someone to build a case that has a microsd built in that connects to the usb port and it does not interfere with Wireless qi & NFC use. If someone builds it... I want my 10%! I thought of it first :silly:

Great thought I can't be mad at that just don't see why we need to have terabyte worth of data on our phones. But hey again patent that thought

Couldn't agree more. People also seem to be forgetting or just not reading the reason behind getting rid of the External SDCard.

Whaaaaaat There is a reason for it who would of thought. LOL
People just hate change that's all I swapped a S2 for a Nexus and didn't not sweating the 16gb hard drive just did what I had to do. We are just a bunch of complainers and entitled people that's all.... Lol
I guess the future will be personal cloud ?.. people will have their own wireless storage as a wearable device and it can be accessed without any wires or case and it can be used with laptop, phone and may also be encrypted from others stealing it ?

My Note 4 is my go to device but I also have a Note 5. I thought about getting a V10 but I need the SPen so I had no other choice if I wanted something new.
Somebody mentioned how SD cards are not reliable and can mess up resulting in lost data. Frankly, that hardly ever happens. In years of SD card use I've never had that happen to me but I did have my Note 5 become completely unresponsive. It would not turn on at all and I had to get a replacement from TMobile. Guess what? I lost all the pics I had taken that day because even though I use Google photos, I only sync the pics when charging and on WiFi to avoid using too much cellular data. If I had an SD card I would have been able to pull the pics off the card even though the phone wouldn't turn on.
Some people say there is a good reason for the SD card feature being removed. The only reason is profit. Why could they not have made it work? Some people say it's because the memory isn't compatible with the new memory being used on these phones but I don't believe that. Why is it that OTG works? Couldn't they have just made an SD card slot that worked the same way as OTG?
I like the Note series but I sure hope we get back expandable storage.

Expandable sd slot is built into the chpset. USB otg is not. Think of it as a truck. The bed is built into the body, but to get more room you get a trailer hitch and trailor.
Now we have an suv instead of a truck. That's why swapping primary storage drives was a thing on some older phones. Instead of using a actual nand flash, some phones used a micro SD card for internal and a second for expandable.
On some devices you could actually change to the Expandable storage being the "internal" storage via bootloader.
The type of chip being used in the note 5 is not capable of running a micro SD card and maintain high speed for the onboard. The how to just isn't there yet.
Regardless of that being bs. The other thing about designs, the shells are made first, then the rest of the product. Outside in.
