Yeah, which is getting out of hand (at least, for me). I've had my Slingbox for several years and I've switched mobile platforms during that time. No discount and my licenses go to waste. I'm guessing I'm up to at least $100 in just Slingbox player (WinMo, iPhone, etc.).
It wouldn't bother me, since I do use the app, but I'm guessing they're about to milk me another time when they launch the iPad app. There's no sign they will opt for universal app. Second, their follow up support sucks. They're lucky they have such a useful product because their player development cycle (waaay too long), licensing scheme ("buy the hardware and never pay" except for our software) and support isn't winning a single award.
edit: OH, and another thing... their ridiculous ability to charge $30 for software that they aren't willing to state whether it will work with my Slingbox AV. I get to roll the dice and maybe one day it will go dark.
Been waiting for this app also. Besides the $30 cost there will be nothing better for live streaming from your tv. Had it for windows mobile and iphone. Watched directv all over town. This is the best $30 you can spend. Sucked when they shutdown the sling community forums and opened up the new "staff driven" support forums. Sling community was great and helped a lot of people.

I wonder if you would be able to transfer the iphone to ipad? I am sure this won't work to transfer to android though.
http://support.slingbox.com/get/KB-1000194.html
At least its just a one time charge, not sure what the other companies (not t-mobile) charge to have the TV type services.

I'm digging into their forum/answers site and it looks like my old, old Windows Mobile license can transfer so long as the Android player is a trial version that accepts licenses. The iPhone app is a different beast than their usual software since Apple has complete control over the distribution of the app. I guess I learned tonight that it's quite possible to transfer from WinMo to Blackberry to Symbian. Your license is only active on one install.
I'm crossing my fingers they took this into consideration.
why on earth are they charging so damn much of this thing? Really, its just a player, thats a third of what I payed for the slingbox itself. But if this same app works on google tv, I might have a purpose for this app.
"When in your mobile phone provider's area of 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi coverage and connected to a Slingbox® SOLO, PRO or PRO-HD, SlingPlayer Mobile makes it simple to watch and control your living room television at any time from any location."
no dice on my slingbox tuner then i guess

Working on my Slingbox AV but it says "some streams will not work". No clue why "some" wouldn't and others would.

more then likely the older models work perfectly well, but they can sell the solo and pro's for a lot more then a tuner or an AV. It probably all about money. Their site says "tuner and AV is not supported. It is highly recommended to get the newer slingboxs" This is what it said for the iphone moblie app.
hmmm....i guess its about time to finally purchase a slingbox.
not showing up in the market for me -running frf50
edit; now it is using THIS
I have 3 slingboxes at work, an original, pro (i think next model after the original) and a new HD one. Only the HD one works. The iphone version supports all three. The prices on these players is wacked. I don't mind paying but jeez. Buy a $30 app just to find out I need to buy like $600 worth of new boxes. Good looking out Google with the 24 hour refund period.

Google it?
I also think that having to buy the app at full price if you already are a slingbox owner is ridiculous!!! At least give current owners a discount or something!! And it's not like the app is cheap, $30 is type expensive just for the app...no??
Can someone please post the Slingbox.APK if it's ok/allowed or send it to me via PM? so we can see if our current licenses would work??? I'd greatly appreciate it as I'm many others would as well!!!
Best purchase since the N1
still cant see it here....

Kind of disappointing that the EVO doesn't have this yet.
Anyone talented enough to do a port?
did you notice the screen on the phone is unusable once its connected to the tv... try typing a in a web page or searching for anything.. i think its a good start but i dont think i would pay for it
It is a beta app, and he admits there are some kinks, but this is an impressive start. I emailed him and asked him to start work on the Evo. I would gladly pay for this app on the Evo, even if the phone screen became unuseable, and everything only showed on the TV, that's a big deal.
You could use Rockplayer to watch unconverted AVI's. You could use CM6 along with Snesoid to play MarioKart on your big screen. Controls are all done with the remote.
You can start up Hulu, then once it's running, turn on the app, and watch it on your TV. The only control you need there is to touch the center to pause.
This is a big deal, and alot of people would pay good money for it.

Agree on all points.
Quality! would love to have this on the evo. That would make me buy the cable. No need for it now as I mostly want it to watch my downloaded movies with rockplayer.
wow.. cant believe that this came out on the droid x BEFORE someone figured it out on the evo..
guess theres alot more droid users.. Please get this on evo
Bump... I love to see someone accomplish this, specially if they could get rockplayer to output via HDMI. Not many people have commented on this so I bumped it. I guess most people dont use the HDMI out on their phone? Normally not a person that likes to pay for things if I dont have to, but I would gladly donate to see some further development.
hhhhmmmmm damn interesting
agreed this would be awesome especially since I'm getting my cables shipped!

not necessarily a lot more, just the right user to start this project picked up the droid x. hopefully he will port it or work with someone who could port it for us. i would donate too, maybe there will be a real bounty this time lol.
Mf this is frustrating. I wish I knew how to program.

I would also donate. But please do not start another "bounty". Maybe a list of contributors after they donate. I hate these bounty/promise to maybe one day donate threads.

I really love my Samsung Captivate phone from ATT. It's one of the better phones i have had from ATT...mind you not the best but one of the better phones. Recently I have become extremly frustrated with the whole froyo update situation. First the official release was going to come out in September then pushed back to November and now from what im hearing not until December through a OTA update from ATT. When I got my phone I was told by the ATT rep that an update from 2.1 to froyo 2.2 would becoming soon. I went on ahead and got the Captivate against my better judgment. That was this past summer and i paid 199.99 to upgrade. Well now it's November and all we get are rumors about an update that may or may not happen. Now that same captivate is selling for 129.99 at Best Buy. Now I feel ripped off, not only from ATT but now from Samsung. For now on whenever I purchase a new phone I will buy the phone based on what it can do at that time not based on what it might be able to do later on down the line, that way i won't be so frustrated. My older brother has an iphone 4 and now im really starting to get upset because now he is streaming netflix movies and doing a host of other things with his phone that my phone may or may not be able to do. I know that developmentally the iphone is limited but...you get what you pay for out the box and your not waiting for the phone to be able to do something else later on down the line. Im seriously thinking of just caughing up the money and picking up an iphone 4 from the Apple store this weekend. If I do that then I will give away my Craptivate to anybody who wants it because i wouldn't feel right charging someone for it being as though it's already outdated with 2.1 firmware on it.
Ill buy it if you want to sell it

First, you shouldn't be upset about the price dropping. All electronics have a dramatic price drop after a release. You should expect that.
Second, there is a Froyo update coming out for the phone. No doubt about it. We have already seen it released for the international version. We have two leaked releases for the Captivate. If there wasn't an update coming out, Samsung wouldn't be spending the time in making these builds. Also, you bought a Captivate with 2.1. The box doesn't say, Android 2.1 with a 2.2 update coming soon.
I also wouldn't call Android 2.1 "outdated". Compared to Android 2.2, yes it is outdated. But compared to other mobile operating systems, it's advanced. I cannot think of anything iOS can do that Android 2.1 cannot.
Now, with regard to applications: this last year has been huge for Android. They now have the volume of users and where there's volume, the developers can make money. You speak of Netflix, they will be releasing an Android app in Q1 of next year.
It could be that this phone is too advanced for you. iPhones are great and easy to use. If you don't understand all of the enhancements that Android brings, then maybe an iPhone is best for you. If being able to stream Netflix NOW instead of 2 - 3 months from now is that important to you, then get an iPhone and trade off:
Open source goodness
Awesome community support
Phone customization
Flawless google integration
More hardware options (you're not stuck with just one style phone)
Mass storage capabilities
You're not dependent on iTunes
File structure access
Build your own apps (google app inventor)
Up to 48 GB of storage
Replaceable battery
$5 monthly insurance (at&t doesn't offer insurance for the iPhone)
REAL multitasking
Memory management (If you choose to manually do it. Android is great at managing memory itself.)
The awesome Widgets
Notification bar
Oh, and the list above doesn't even mention any of the infinite possibilities if you chose to root your phone.
My question is why do you need the "official release"? The leaked version is probably just as good (I saw probably since OTA isn't out). I love it and am not really looking forward to the official one. Also most android phones are not in 2.2 so you really shouldn't feel outdated. By the way Amazon gives this phone for free (well 1 cent to be exact).
Edit: Didn't see above post; says it all better than me.
Frustrating, ain't it? Also part of the fun of the gadget.
Heck, searching for news on when the update'll be released is how I get through the workday! (I've also spent too much time flashing different incarnations of Cognitian's ROMs - Which are great, by the way).
The update will come, then we'll all be clammoring for Gingerbread!
@skinien - Great reply!
Not being able to watch Netflix movie on your phone really has nothing to do with Samsung, AT&T or the Captivate. Netflix decided to release their Android version later than the other platforms so there is nothing anyone can do.
So the real question is why do you need 2.2 right now? What capability are you looking for that will only work in 2.2? Personally, the only thing I need 2.2 for is voice dial over bluetooth.
cool story bro
There will always be an OS, hardware, phone coming soon/out right now better than what you have. *****ing about what you have is certainly an option. Not a good one, IMO, but definitely an option.
I am still using stock 2.1, rooted, with sideloaded Wireless Tether and Flash 10.1, and launcherpro hides the bloat.
With the exception of being able to moves apps to the sd, what is missing?
Who needs FroYo, anyway?

Well..if you will feel bad selling it.I'll gladly pay you for the shipping of it to my home. Feel free to get the I-phone if this is what you are wanting to do. They work great for what they are.I bought both of my sons theirs last August when I got 2 Captivates for my wife and myself. So I can always use a spare one
Your not alone in your feelings of anger over not getting what was promised,I too am a bit pissed off about it as well. I do know that in time it will be available in a official capacity..but in the mean time I'll wait it out like everyone else is doing that wants it. Sooner or later there will be a completely stable custom rom for it that isn't a PIA to load and has everything working properly on it.This is what I am looking forward too,but again it is a waiting game for me and many others..
Feel free to PM me your mailing address for the shipping cost if you elect to give it away..
Thanks

Screw the official release, get froyo now!. nothing like free tethering. Im sorry but next flex streaming? who cares i got flash! i get hulu streaming lets see an iphone do that.. my droid takes a poopoo on the iphone.
There are plenty of awesome, free ROMs here. Try one on for size before you go spending hundreds of dollars to be told what you can or can't do with the phone you just bought.

I've been looking into tablets for the last week and a half and can't seem to find one that looks decent for the kids(3) so please gives some help to what is good out there...?
here is a list of things they do or would like to do.. they seem to like the 7" tablets from what i have seen so far taking them to the stores around here...
facebook, youtube, online games such as farmville and such, listen to music and also watch videos and do alot of ebook reading...would like to be able to have or the ability to add the marketplace from google and they dont really need GPS but wifi is a must.....
dont have alot of money. only tax return money to get something for them...
I run a droid x w/ GB installed and rooted
Hmm... I don't know why but the HTC Flyer sounds like a good option to me
I guess i should have stated that I only have like $800 for 3 of them so thats like $265 each, I would like to pick them up for a graduation present as my kids have done a wonderful job in school this year..
Google says the Nexus Player is sold out, Best Buy etc... seem to have no stock.
Do you think they maybe releasing the next generation Nexus Player?
Just my guess, but I think there won't be next model or if there will, it will be a cheaper version. In my view Player flopped. Developers didnt do much for it and there wasnt really added value in it...
I hope they do release a new version.. it is a great little product that does suffer from lack of dev support. A new product launch could spark some excitement for the product and get some now devs on board.
They did release the Android N preview for it. Maybe that means that they do have future plans for it.
I don't think they would discontinue it but I could see them finding a way to make it smaller and more Chromecast like (who wouldn't want a Chromecast-sized dongle that runs Android TV instead allowing full apps and remote support)
It definitely flopped, but if I were Google, I'd give it another shot. Everything in entertainment is moving toward standalone streaming boxes like this, and I still haven't figured out why Android TV in particular hasn't attracted developers. It should be the logical alternative to Apple TV. Maybe they released the N preview to test the waters, and if devs finally bite, they'll either put the NP back in stock or put out a successor.
The fact alone that it has a remote should give it an advantage over the Chromecast. I don't know anyone who wants to flip through their smartphone apps every time they want to control their TV. Conversely, watching YouTube on an AppleTV is a pain precisely because it can't pair with your phone and you're forced to type out searches with an on-screen keyboard, and of course you also don't have the option of watching YouTube through Kodi. All it needs is a couple more big names in the Play Store and it would catch like wildfire, and the recent addition of HBO Go is a start.

Thing is....
Google does believe people would rather use their phone(which they already have in use or on them constantly) to control media content.
And actually, google is more focused on AndroidTV being built into televisions. That is their future, but they don't plan on giving up on people that don't wish to replace their existing televisions.
Sony, LG, Vizio.... All trending towards further AndroidTV integration.
They we restock the NP as we know it. But likely there will be a new device soon enough. They have to essentially compete with the fire TV's(not the fire stick) and be capable of 4k output.
Amazon has not been profiting on any of their ftv devices though.... And that is a whole nother discussion. But I'd expect a new Nexus Player device to hit the market by years end.
