Exchange support?

This is just a quick question from someone eyeballing the hero as a potential next phone...
Does Android have support for Exchange servers? My WM phone lets me sync my calender, tasks, and email (and more I think but these are all I need.) If I went to an Android device like the hero, I would need to still get my work email and sync my calendar to get appointment reminders.
Can Android do these things I speak of?

Indeed it does. However, it should probably be pointed out that the built in Exchange support on the Hero isn't as complete as it might be (see here) and you may find it necessary to use a 3rd party app like Touchdown if your company uses security policies.

The only good exchange support I've found for the Hero is the built in 1.5 rom.
1.5 Stock rom/fresh etc - Full exchange support
1.6 roms have no support
2.0+ roms have support for mail and contacts but not calendar
FYI Touchdown is $19.95 or in other words "way too expensive."

Any Rom with Sense will have full Exchange support.

Ok, before I get *****ed at some more about not searching; I did lol.
I found information regarding exchange support being introduced into 2.0, but then I also found a random thread where someone mentioned exchange support on their hero was good.
I didn't know if the person with the hero was running a custom rom or something since I know it comes with 1.5.
So that is why I am here in the Hero CDMA forum and not some random android device forum

The stock Hero (or any 1.5 ROM) does NOT have full support for Exchange 2007 ActiveSync. There are a number of EAS security features (remote wipe, require PIN, etc...) that are not supported by the phone. In order to allow using all of the Mail features in Hero (including simply sending mail), I had to disable some ActiveSync policies on my Exchange server. Exchange 2010 has the same caveats. From what I have read, Android 2.0 and 2.1 still do not have full-functionality EAS support (the iPhone has had it for a LONG time). There is some hope that HTC 2.1 SenseUI will have the functionality added.

Oh wow ok. Well thank you so much for this post. I'll check with the IT guy here at work to see if we are running Exchange 2003 or 2007 (I'm pretty sure it's 2003.)
If it's 2003, does that mean it'll work fine?

The best ROM that worked with my company's exchange server is fresh's 2.1 ASOP. That one actually supported my company's exchange policy requiring a passcode. All other 2.0+ roms do not support it and I couldn't use anything but Touchdown.

I'm about to head back to Touchdown, and I'm using a 2.1 rom. The native support is extremely basic. As far as I can tell, there is no way to get automatic updates for any folder other than your Inbox. Meaning all of my filtered mail never shows up on my Hero unless I specifically refresh every subfolder.

Funny, the company I work for turned off some EAS security specifically for the executives that have iPhones. I have no problems synching mail/calendar/contacts with my company's Exchange server.
The calendar is probably the most important thing I sync. When I tried 2.0 and 2.1 AOSP, I was sad there was no calendar support. I'm back to running Modaco 2.2 with Gbhil's kernel and lots of my own customizations to basically make it mine.
I love it much better than any WinMo phone I've owned. So many issues in the WinMo OS itself (I ran 6.0, 6.1, 6.5 and 6.5.1 before dropping it and going to Android). I look forward to Sprint releasing a 2.1 ROM in March or April or whenever they have it ready.

As other have said, Sense builds and 2.1 build has basic exchange support. I found that I still had to purchase Touchdown due to the fact I have lots and lots of folders with rules that sort my mail. The built in client doesn't support push or periodic checking of any other folder than the inbox.
Also some of the security policy's are not supported. Touchdown is $20, not as pretty as the built in interface but has almost full support.

Thanks for the heads up about Touchdown. $20 bucks is pretty steep for an app, especially something in my opinion, that should work with the phone out of the box. Now to see if Nandroid can help me trick em.

So I recently found out that any mail I sent from my Hero was stuck in the outbox, and that is due to the issue everyone here is talking about regarding security policies. I work for a large company and they will not make exceptions to the policy
I am looking at Touchdown now, but it seems like it doesn't integrate with the native mail, calendar, contacts, etc of the Hero. Is that correct? Basically, email, contacts, calendar etc will be in the Touchdown app only? So those contacts will not show up my in contact list when I click the phone button?

It is true that Touchdown has it's own email, calendar and contacts but as far as contacts go you can have it populate the standard contacts app on your phone.

Touchdown will populate and sync Exchange contacts with your Android device's internal phone book. I had a few bumps getting contact syncing to work on my 2.1 rom, but I finally got it.

Thanks ffolkes. Has anyone tried Roadsync? Is that any more integrated with the native android functionality than Touchdown?

AOSP email and exchange

I am in need of a working AOSP email app that will work with my exchange account. Here's what I got.. EVO running CM7 with the latest nightly, and my exchange server is 2007. Mow here is my problem, when I fill in the appropriate information I select SSL and accept all certificates but it will then say "the exchange server requires security features your phone does not support." And this is only with the AOSP mail client. HTC and touchdown work fine. Now my question is, does anyone know a work around to get my exchange to connect? I don't want an email apk that has removed any security features or anything like that. I have searched but all I have found are mail apks that are modded to remove the pin (which doesnt help me). I just want a stock mail apk that will work! Lol I going crazy. Not sure if I will ever find a way to get this to work but I figured I'd give one more try with you guys! Thanks!

I know this is old but I'm having the same thing happen now. Running MIUI, email was working fine the other day, then I'm guessing our Exchange Admins ran an update or made a change that caused any AOSP mail client to work. I've tried flashing to CM7 and that mail client does not work, however, the stock Samsung client does. I also made an Email.apk for MIUI and CM7 that both bypass Exchange security that I've tried and neither of those work now.
What are we missing here?

I am running MIUI 1.9.9 and I have the stock email app working fine with my work Exchange server. It eats the hell out of my battery but it is work fine.

i'm thinking of throwing Android on my HD2 but before I do, I need to know if I can support a couple of things?
Can I support two exchange email accounts?
Will it pull sync ALL info including pictures of people from the server?
Are there any particular fields that are not supported, like the "Notes"?
Is there a Microsoft OneNote client?
I'm guessing there is no MS Zune client at the moment either? Does anyone know if there are any plans?
To support the above, do I need a specific version of Android?

Our Exchange setup was just changed to support the enhanced security features and they just forced the "remote wipe" capability.
So everybody who was used to the stock client is shut out!
Google issued a patch for the same BUT to ENTERPRISE customers only!

What the hell was that about.
The stock android mail client was working for me a lot of the people and now it just gives some error about unable to connect.
Now if we need our corporate email we have to either buy the Commercial product:
TouchDown Email : $20
MoxiMail : $20
Enhanced Email : $10
OR compromise with the free clients which just does mail.
K-9 Mail works for most of the Motorola Droid phones.
I have a LG GT540 and it stopped after a day.
MailDroid works better on LG GT540 android phone. I have a rooted android 2.2 on GT540.
All the free mail clients are the basic exchange mail clients which can help you to read email and reply to email.
It does not have GAL (corporate addressbook Lookup). So you need to know the email address of the person to send email to.
Workaround: Corporate AddressBook
Looks up corporate addressbook and has search function.
After a few weeks use most of them switched to MailDroid which seems to be more stable.
Any of the genius out there who have been working on the ROM have been able to get the patch in so that the stock email client can work as it is supposed to work?
That was the core function most users use their phone for and now it does not work unless you pay up and buy a commercial product.

EVO 4G Exchange server
I have this work phone that I want to root but I don't want to mess up the ssl encryption. Will this happen if I root my phone. I don't want to go back to the IT Dept. to get it. The encryption is on my phone, but I can't see it. How do I save the encryption.

Very new here and have run into what seems to be a ROM stopper issue.
My company uses Exchange Activesync but in order to connect has to be allowed to push certain security settings to my Inspire. The normal rooted phone, I am able to use the HTC Email app with no issues and am forced to use the security.
However, after flashing a ROM (I have tried MIMU and REV 4,) I am no longer able to add my Activesync account. It gets down to do the install and fails with a general error (Try again later or some such) and won't create the account.
I did do some searching and found there was an email app that apparently bypasses that setup, but I'm not interested in bi-passing, just in getting the security to work.
Now, finally to the question: Are there any INSPIRE ROMs here that people have got to work with activesync? More specifically, with activesync that is trying to force security settings on the device?
(I had made a backup of my ROM before hand and was able to restore back to working copy without any issues [yeah] and I am sure that I wiped everything on installing both ove the above mentioned ROM.)
Sorry for the long post, but I thought background was important to understand the issue.

CM7 will work fine. Now keep in mind, the actual server address can be different on AOSP email clients compared to HTC.
For example, my setup that I administer:
HTC Server address: owa.organization.com
Domain: organizationdomain
AOSP(CM7) Server address: owa.organization.com/owa
Domain:blank
Check with your exchange admin to see what your proper settings would be. If others in your organization have, for instance a Samsung or Nexus, get what they would use for settings.

My Inspire is a work phone I have never had an issue getting it to connect to our activesync. It also has that extra security thing but it always prompts me to allow it right before it syncs up. It has worked for me on the following ROMs.
Ultimate Droid (Current ROM)
CM7
MIUI
Cognition
RC Mix HD
You could always try a 3rd party email app like touchdown or K9 from the market.

I tried it for sure on MIUI and it didn't work. I have tried using K-9 and it won't even work with activesync account on stock. I am getting this error when I am trying to add the account both in email as well as in just the Settings - Account. Any other thoughts? I will try CM7 or Ultimate Droid tonight.

MIUI makes changes to the AOSP email program, so it actually may not be compatible. What version of Exchange are you running?

I believe we are on Exchange 2007. Here is the info on the exchange web service:
Connected to Microsoft Exchange

That is what I administer. When adding to MIUI are you using the same server name/domain info that you had in HTC based ROMs?

We have a Exchange 2003 and I cannot get it to connect to that server. Maildroid and Touchdown both worked without any problems. I wish the default email client was a little more robust.

You may want to try using no domain and the full owa path for server name.

BTW...I did finally get the K-9 mail to work on the "stock" ROM. I had to put in my full email addy on the mailbox alias along with the /owa/auth/ in the Authorization path.

Update to the saga. Just tried CM 7 and when I try to add the ActiveSync Account, here is the actual error I get:
Setup could not finish
This server requires security features your phone does not support.

Do you already have a PIN code set to unlock the device?

It sounds like your corporate IT server is locked down a little more than normal. I've used the CM7 stock client on 3 exchange systems (my employer's server, my consulting gig's server and gmail exchange settings for push) and it connects fine to all of them.

Also, try RCMix 5.9.3. See if it gives the same results as Rev 4.

I did, however, get the K-9 email program to work in CM7. Now the only downside is I don't get contacts or calendar. I'll keep looking...

Hah, local Gov't here. The default AOSP mail client does support remote wipe, as I have tested our organization's functionality on Android on CM7, RCMix, and of course stock. (as well as a few times on the Captivate).
Try setting the password in Location & Security and checking that Use Secure Credentials is checked; and make sure Email is set as a device administrator.

How would I go about doing the "make sure Email is set as a device administrator." step you mentioned? When I click on device administrator there is nothing there to select.
I did try setting up the password in Loc & Sec and the checked the Use Secure as well. Still wouldn't allow me to add the activesync account. This is all still on CM7. Still a no go on getting my contacts and calendars to sync. What am I missing? (I'm sure it is me.)

You may want to try to contact your organization administrators and ask them if you can have an exception for the security policy. There is a particular setting that I have seen brought problems with several android phone this setting is "Allow Non-provisionable Device" and it should be set to true (many organizations set it to false which cause connectivity failures).

There is no way that I will get them to change settings for me. It has to either be something I am missing or a change that needs to be made in the ROM

[Q] Exchange Email Not Working

Hello,
I just purchased the G2X with the understanding that it supports exchange corporate email. When I try to setup the email, I get the error "this server requires security features your phone does not support". I have tried checking both of the security certificate boxes and confirmed that I am entering the right address.
Does the phone support Exchange? My company uses Exchange 2007.

The built in mail client is pretty bad for exchange tbh. My particular issue was that it could not let me see the contents of most of my folders. I've started using touchdown for exchange, it has a free 30 day trial and is much better.
I saw options for exchange 2007 when installing it so hopefully it supports your company's security policy. It does and auto detect of server config on initial setup.

Exchange works fine for me here. You might want to check with your IT department. If there is anything wrong with the way they setup OWA or what ever it is called to access exchange over the web, then you might have issues.

Yup, Exchange works fine for me. It uses DAV over OWA instead of true ActiveSync, but only WinMo supports REAL ActiveSync anyway. In practice you really can't tell the difference.

I also use touchdown for exchange. It's pretty nice and also you get 90 day trail if you download from amazon app store.

Exchange 2007 works here
We use hosted exchange 2007 at our company and the stock app works for me as well. +1 for talking to your IT department or trying Touchdown.

They'll need to enable support for non-provisionable devices on the Exchange server for the ActiveSync policy assigned to you. Or you can go with Touchdown as suggested as Touchdown has a better ActiveSync implementation than the stock client.
