I'm looking for confirmation or correction regarding my observation of a folder synchronization problem I see with ActiveSync.
Menu | Tools | Manage Folders | <hold stylus on folder to invoke pop up menu> | Folder Options
for ActiveSynch, Folder Options is not enabled, whereas with IMAP, it is.
This means that with IMAP you can choose FOR EACH FOLDER how many days of messages you want to download, and more importantly, the folder will not purge the messages on the client when given number of days pass. The benefit is obviously being able to move items to folders for safe keeping while the inbox stays lean.
With ActiveSync, it seems that all the folders obey the "download past x days" setting in the Email Sync Options set during the Outlook Email setup wizard, and all folders are vulnerable to the rolling "x-days" purge.
This difference forces me to keep an IMAP account for email while using ActiveSync for just contacts and calendar.
Is anyone else aware of this? Does anyone else agree or disagree?
Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, if you are using POP3 it will not be possible to upload your sent messages to the server because POP3 is not a sync based protocol like IMAP.
There are a few things you need to do first to enable your sent messages to be synced with your desktop outlook.
1) Talk to your service provider and see if you can get IMAP access to your Inbox
2) If you are given access to your email via IMAP, then you need to ensure that the Sent Folder on the server is in the root of the account and not under Inbox.
Basically the folder structure on your server should like this
Root
|
|_>Inbox
|
|_>Sent Items
|
|_>Deleted Items
and not like this
ROOT
|
|__>INBOX__>Sent Items
Once you have ensured this, all you need to do is enter the correct settings in your PPC and select which folders you want to sync and voila it's done.
You can set you desktop Outlook to delete the messages on the server once it has completed downloading them to your harddrive. That way you won't be wasting space on the server.
Hope that helps.
If you are having trouble with setting up the sync between the server folders and your PPC becuase of the folder hierarchy on the server, then I suggest you use FlexMail 2007. It allows you to set any folder to be the Sent Items folder irrespective the of the hierarchy.

aren't the mails saved anywhere on the phone, so that I could copy/import them to my Outlook?!
Hi,
coming from a relatively literate PC user - I must say that Gmail IMAP must be something most confusing I have come across.
I managed to get it working, I can see GMAIL account in well, accounts, and mail is going back and forth the way it should.
1. Now, the problem are labels. I can see them listed as folders below GMAIL default folders, but they are all empty. All the emails simply go to inbox folder.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Also, deleting an email on my cell phone does not move it to Trash folder on Gmail account (on the server). Does this maybe happen next time I send/receive?
2. data traffic counter in WM. Where can I see how much data went over the GPRS/HSDPA connection? In total and in the last session?
Thank you all
Alex
think your imap pickle is more an imap thing then a wm thing as google imap in outlook
on my pc is the same way

You don't sound familiar with Gmail's label concept. Think of each label as a mask, and each message having a bitmap of its labels. You can tag each message with many labels. You label (move to folder) and remove labels (delete from folder) by masking bits.
Delete from a folder (including Inbox) and you've only masked a label bit. If you want to really delete the message, delete it from [Gmail]/All Mail.
Hmmm...
thanx all for the replies! Well, I AM familiar with the labels concept but then (obviously) it doesnt integrate well with the mail client in Windows, no? I mean, if the client recognises folders (labels) why cant it put messages into them?
Cheers!
I use FastMail.FM for my IMAP mail.
When I want to sync IMAP sub folders I have to go to:
Menu, Tools, Manage Folders and select all subfolders that I want to synchronize. (to make sure the content is synced, not just an empty folder)
Doesn't GMAIL work the same way?
Quite frankly, I don't see any advantage of use IMAP over pop and not to mention POP is faster and simpler
I see a lot of advantages.
My IMAP servers is pulling POP3 mail from other servers, so I have all my mail in one place.
I always have it backed up.
I can access it from anywhere, and read my mail anywhere.
(from my PC, laptop, Shift, webmail)
I can archive mail to subfolders.
etc,etc..
BTW, you are right about the speed. POP3 is a bit faster to check for new mail. I don't see why it would be simpler.
imap support push
pop3 itself does not

Lately I've been using Postbox on Windows and Mac. It's built from Mozilla code and has similarities to Thunderbird, but it's a lot more stable and a lot better IMO. Also, it makes using Gmail IMAP a whole lot easier.
Hi all,
I have two E-Mail accounts set up on my Touch HD.
1) - Imap connection to GMAIL
2) - Sync connection to Nuevasync, through to Gmail for Cal and Contacts.
Now when I chose to manage folders in number 1, if I choose one of Google's default folders (All Mail, Spam etc) they sync correctly. If I choose folders created under the Inbox, although I have the option to check their check boxes, the E-Mails in them do not replicate onto my phone.
Is this a limitation with Gmail as in the Web GUI they are not shown as folders, but they do work fine in Thunderbird using an Imap Connection.
Many Thanks,
Paul.
I have the same problems. the subfolders emails are not mapped to my phone.
sorry for bringing up an old topic but I am having the same issue on my wizard have you by chance found a solution?
Thanks,
yonu
Just can't find a way to keep my emails on my HTC HD2. They are there in inbox for a while and just dissappear. I need some guidance if possible.
The inbox will contain not more than 50 mails. All older mails will be removed from your device.
To enable more mails, follow this little guide:

More explanation on the bottom -Hope this helps-
Scroll to the "Email" TF3D tab. Once there, click "Inbox" (on the bottom to the left).
> Once inside your "Inbox", click "Menu" (on the bottom to the right).
> In the "Menu" box Highlight and select "Tools.
> The "Tools" box will bring another box, in it Highlight and select "Manage Folders".
> Once inside "Manage Folders" Tap and hold the "Inbox" folder.
> This brings a small box, Highlight and select "Folder Options" which will take ya to another screen Called "Inbox" options.
> Once there you can choose how many days to download or and whether the entire message or only its header.

Hope you can find a better solution, and my friend has the same problem too. He has HTC Touch HD.
Really weird.. But since your friend has it too, isn't it your Wifi connection that troubles?

You might receive more help if you could provide more info on:
1) what email are you using?;
2) is it downloaded by POP3; IMAP or Active Sync.(exchange server)?
3) Howlong the emails staying inbox before dissapear?
3 a) does the email dissapear after reading them or???
4) What is your setting to download past days emails
5) What is the server settings for the emails after downloading ( does the server keep copy or delete on the server after download)
some info about emails
1. I'm using private email form bnet (provider from Croatia)
2. POP3
3. Emails disappear after 2 to 5 days
3.a. of course all emails are read
4. I didn't set any past days to download emails(it's set to all messages)
5. My server settings on PPC can't give the info about emails after downloading from server
Maybe it's because I syncronize my PPC with PC ( but I don't sync emails)
I've also ajusted settings for manual deleting messages.
Need help again
OK, I've found out that whenever I check emails on my PC, all emails dissapear from my PPC. Weird! as if they are just temporarly on my PPC until I check up on my PC. Does it have something to do with my server, is it my provider. Hpe to get some usefull help.
shouldn't be an issue with your server. there must be an option somewhere that may be set to deleting emails once they are read. emails disappearing once you red them on your pc makes sense. i will experiment with mine and post any findings.
Hello,
My company uses hosted Exchange Server for about 200 users, we have been using BB for many years, now we are free to go anyway we want.
Questions: When viewing e-mails from exchange account, can we move them to folders and when moving folders, can we type the name of the folder or do we have to scroll to find the one and then tap to move it? Or is there any app/add-on or customization we can get to allow this?
Also, do all folders get automatically synched to phone, or do we have to select which ones? I hope it syncs them all with no questions, especially when a new one is created on outlook.
Last question, is there a unified inbox for all folders, so e-mails in all folders (not just all accounts) displayed in one screen with icons next to them indicating they are in a folder? If not, that's cool.
I am just trying to move from BB to Windows Phone, and trying to figure out if it has the features I use most frequently.
Answers would really be appreciated.
You can move emails to folders. You must select the folder from a list. There are no apps or customizations AFAIK to change that.
All folders don't automatically get synced, but when you select a folder for the first time you get the option of turning on sync for that folder. Actually to be honest I am not sure if it syncs the folder just that once or if it will continue to sync that folder automatically.
There is no unified-folder view.
Thanks for the reply.
Someone answered this question else where with:
I figured it out recently, just click on bottom right "..." and you will see all the options you are looking for, all folders are there and can be selected + unified messaging....

Is this possible? i don't own a WP7 device, so I can't try, can you check this please? Is this only for unified messaging from multiple accounts?
Regarding folder sync, the reason I asked is because if it automatically syncs all from exchange server, when you create a new folder on Outlook, you would not have to go back to you WP and select it. Is that the case?
Sync folders are not added automatically, you need to do so manually. The only folders synced by default are Inbox and Sent. Drafts can not be synced. All others can be but you have to set it up manually.
The assumed use case is that a user will only have a few folders inportant enough that they want to use the data and storage to sync them on the phone. Out of some 20-ish folders, I only sync 3 on my phone; the rest aren't time-critical. Exchange rules do a pretty good job of filtering the important from the unimportant for me. This way I can turn on the notification for new mail and have it mean something, rather than just have the phone buzzing all day (I get 300+ emails every day at work).
Just to add to this. They are not synced automatically but are listed automatically. You choose the folder then tell it to sync. after that it will follow the default settings for your exchange account and receive emails pushed.
Also you can pin any of those folders to your start screen. I have one for the directors, one for the CEO and one for staff that is always on my start screen.
We are using exchange 2010 at our office and it pretty much rocks. Also IE9 on Windows phone mango fully supports all outlook web mail options. Works great to access the extra calendars like rooms and such.
In your contacts also you can search the exchange server for an address. Exchange support rocks in windows phone.
Also download the emulator, setup an account and try it out. I think that's possible at least as you can test apps on the emulator.
lastly it also follows exchange rules. You can wipe the phone from (even the user can wipe there own) right through OWA on exchange 2010. Also you can set rules to force pin locks and i think although i haven't tried it, limit what the user can do.
Oh and one more thing... it has sharepoint built in. I haven't tried it yet as i just set up a sharepoint foundation server to pitch to the admins once i've worked more on it. That and onenote
