I just wanted to share this with the android community

I have an issue where when I use QIK, the camera crashes and no longer works (Backflip with android 1.5, stock rom). The response I received was;
Hi James, this doesn't seem to be a Qik-related problem. It might be because you have too many applications and your SD card is running out of memory. You might want to free up some memory of your SD card or uncheck "keep video files" in Qik "settings".

You said as soon as you close Qik, the camera is no longer usable - "the camera" means your native camera? Did you exist Qik? If you have a Droid/Nexus One which allows multiple apps to run at the same time, after you press home button, Qik is still running, hence your native camera can't be used.
If you see that "out of memory" message, you can take out of your battery, put in, start your phone and launch Qik - the message should be gone.

Yes a great response; well I don't need an answer, I will not be using QIK again. I just wanted to make everyone aware of it and what they said was a fix.

Has anyone else been experiencing a delay in photos taken from the camera showing up in the Gallery? It doesn't happen consistently, but happens more often than not. I take a photo, exit to home screen, open the gallery app, and my photos do not show up. One workaround is to un-mount/re-mount the SD card to kick off the media scanner, but this is a pai to do each time I want to review my recent photos. If there is a known fix for this I would appreciate a hint.
I noticed this happening the other for the first time as well... What was strange was that the first 2 or 3 pics showed up immediately but the next 2 took a while. Not sure what is up....

Yeah this is an issue on all android phones unfortunately, I don't know why.
I have found that they wont load until media scanner has run to reload them. Like if I copy a pic from a web site it wont load till after I force media scanner to run and then they show up.
I have the same issue, I just downloaded an app called "ScanMedia" from the market and run it after taking pics... Its free, fast and works perfectly.
ScanMedia Market Link
Thanks d3v14n7 - I tried the ScanMedia app and it works as advertised. Looking forward to a widget version to eliminate a button click.
On Andromeda and the latest speedmod all my pics show up instantaneously. Have you considered flashing a different rom?
I have been running flashed with Cognition v2.3b8 for about two months. I experienced the same delay issue with stock ROM as well with my rev of Cognition. I see that T90 expressed having the same problem running Andromeda 1.1. I may flash over to a rev of Assonance to see if it exists there. Else I'll scour the various ROM posts to see if a release note mentions a fix for this. Thanks for the suggestion.
I flashed to Andromeda 2.1 and experienced no gallery lag when taking pictures, movies or downloading images for over a week worth of use. The orange theme didn't play nice with Gmail app and contacts (black on black issue), so I flashed to Andromeda 1.2. Running 1.2 for 5 days with no gallery lag experienced so far.
Well yeah, the phone has to mount the sdcard. The delay only happens on the first time you run the gallery though, so not a big deal.
Try "Quick Pic" from the market. Does everything gallery does a lot quicker.
Can't say as I have had this issue more than a couple of times and I use my camera for video and pics quite a lot. They might take a second or two to show up in the gallery if I open it up the first time after taking the photo, but they usually do show up. Running completely stock 2.2 since I bought the phone in August. Weird that you are having to mess with mounting the SD card or run a media scan - I would say that is definitely not normal.
I have also started using quickpic as well, but that is only within the last week.

Finally, official support for Galaxy S II.
Does "Samsung Galaxy S" include all Galaxy S devices, like Vibrant, etc?
Still doesn't work for G2x

Those idiots broke Stop Skype yet again...
Who needs stop skype?
Use theos0o's mod of this new version and you will have a "no autorun" option and exit buttons in skype itself. As well as support for video calling on even more devices. And many other extra features and options.

Me. Not keen on idiots calling/IMing me in the middle of the night and not keen on Skype draining the battery when I absolutely do not need/use it. Already been debated to death. The Windows version has a shutdown option, what is the horrible trouble with providing it on Android?

Thanks, but no need for a modded version either, PITA to maintain and update. Maybe they just should stop breaking the Stop Skype thing intentionally if they are too lame to implement an OFF feature.
Just download theos0o mod dude, and you will have your exit button.
By default it is configured exactly the same as the market version, and you won't notice any difference except for the addition of the exit button.
If you want more features then go into advanced settings, yes these extra features are sometimes updated. If you don't care for these extra features then don't update, and you will have the market version of skype with an exit button, without the need to be constantly updating.
Dear All,
TANGO
I am so happy that Tango VideoChat is working!! I suppose all ROMS taking the front vs back camera into consideration
GTALK
I am upset though and please forgive me for insisting for GTALK, I really hope this is not an ARM processor instruction set issue on our device, but if yes, still I dont understand why its really impossible to make the correct patches to make it work, and why Tango is able to utilize...
On other phones it works, like cheap Xperia's and our ChaCha not..it seems unfortunately

[APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional - is the title.
Under this thread there are various ways to install the video version enabled of GTalk. Personally I succeeded with the installation with @MOdaco install apk way and I can log in, chat with no problem. It also displays the camera icon correctly.
Only when I try to make a Video call from my side it hangs, and if other party tries to call me it refers to a network problem
USTREAM, BAMBUSER
(I prefer Bambuser due to the settings more versatility and I think better quality)
can be a Workaround to make your family at home see what you are doing instead of videochat and while streaming in the background you can initiate a call with VIBER for instance
If any other less battery sucking or nicer ways come out nonetheless GTALK updates make possible to work I will post it while being curious what others use... especially for phone to pc (mac)

Fine! I think it should work with Yahoo Messenger too, but wasn't able to try it yet because no one uses it.

Like I wrote in another posting 10 minutes ago, it is not possible getting this to work. I don't understand too why Google is doing this and I also don't even understand why voice talk won't work without video talk (on the PC it does, on Android phones not).

Similar here - so nothing with Google Talk yet.
There was some App that promises video for Google Talk on phones where it usually won't work. But don't try this, it doesn't work on the Chacha either.
Gtalk-Vtok
There is an app called Vtok on the market which works (with some minor issues eg you cant log out), but its a real battery drainer, so I installed it for case in need, but freezing it for normally...
Hi amigos,
I do have HTC explorer, My office have a policy on employees to use only non-camera moblie phones. So I need a solution to this,is there any app available in market to disable the camera with out rooting. I browsed in play store, and I do got an app,but it works only on ICS platform. Pls suggest me any remedy pls..
Thanks,
Viki
Without rooting, I don't think so, sorry. You can block access to the app, requiring a passcode, but if you know the passcode, then it's not really much different to having the app there normally, plus it wastes battery.
Any app available?
Thanks for the reply SifJar. Is there any app which popups an error message kinda like that, if I tap to open camera. Since the one who gonna checking all this will be the security incharge in the gates, he lacks knowledge on android and stuffs.

hi
try this root ur phone and use root explorer and see if u can delete the camera .apk.But make sure to take a backup of the same so u can use the same if needed in the future and at bangalore i have seem that some companies allow u to put a sticker on the camera lens to close it and thus not use the same in the company premises chek with ur co if this is OK it would be a better solution if this is acceptable:laugh:
Any other remedy without rooting
I was using ma phone by sticking a sticker over the camera till now, but the admin security over ma office found many were using kinda like that.so now

Actually, now that I think about it, it should be possible, yes.
There is an app called "Tasker" which allows you to run certain actions whenever certain things happen. One of the "contexts" you can set is an app being launched (e.g. the camera app). This context will then trigger a set of actions, which can include a whole variety of things from returning to the home screen to displaying a custom made popup. You could combine these two, so that whenever the camera is launched, it will return to the home screen and then display a popup saying some error.
There is a free one week trial of Tasker available here: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/download.html (any tasks you create during that first week will continue to work after this time, you just won't be able to add any more without paying for the full version, which is available in the Play Store or via the same link as the trial)
Once you install the trial, download the attached file, remove the .txt extension (put it there as XDA doesn't allow upload of XML files) and put it on your SD card in the folder "profiles" inside "Tasker" on your SD card, then import it into Tasker by long pressing on the button "profiles" at the top and then selecting "import" and then choose "Camera Disable". It is a task I made which I think should do the trick for you. If you want to edit the error message, tap on "No Access" in Tasker (should have a green arrow at it), then tap on "2. Popup" and edit the text accordingly.
EDIT: Also note that disabling the task is as simple as tapping the green tick beside it's name in Tasker, which will turn it into a red circle with a line through it to represent the task is disabled and camera can now be accessed again.
The error will also appear when launching "Camcorder".
Couldnt you get away with just hiding the camera app, that way you can easily say that you deleted it.
So I finally managed to transfer my files to the device but it seems that media scanner only kicks in after a reboot.
I had almost 400 images in a folder, pushed 300 more but I can't see them in the gallery. Hitting the settings in the top right and refreshing does nothing.
Also I noticed that every single app for media refresh/media rescan FC. Also tried the option in TricksterMod and it crashes.
I actually don't like to reboot to be able to see new files...

Seems to be a new Kitkat bug...well didn't bother anymore why the rescan doesn't kick it automatically.
As I have TricksterMod installed I just use it's media scanner feature if I need to.

I tried the previously mentioned app but it didn't work. Unfortunately, I may have a corruption issue on my hands but I certainly hope not.
Also, you said in the OP that using the TricksterMod function crashed but now you're saying you still use it. Does it work even though it crashes? My TM has a sentence about the scanner not being available.

It works again for some weeks with Trickster as the dev integrated some kind of workaround
I just stumbled across this thread and figured I'd share a little quick and dirty widget I put together for my personal use since I was having the same issue.
It's a 1x1 widget (you may need to resize) that you simply click to initiate / force a media rescan. KitKat no longer supports this out of the box, due to abuse / battery issues, so you MUST have root in order to run.
The first time you attempt to run after clicking the widget, you will therefore need to grant root privileges to the widget, after which, you'll get a toast notification that the re-scan has been initiated.
To add to your homescreen, look for 'Media Rescan' in your widgets list.
Give it a few seconds or minutes (depending on how much media you've added, etc), and any missing images should now appear in your gallery.
This was quick and dirty, so there's not a lot of error checking, checking for privileges, etc, so YMMV in terms of functionality
Hope it helps. Works for me, no guarantees for anyone else
