Media scanner not working properly - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally managed to transfer my files to the device but it seems that media scanner only kicks in after a reboot.
I had almost 400 images in a folder, pushed 300 more but I can't see them in the gallery. Hitting the settings in the top right and refreshing does nothing.
Also I noticed that every single app for media refresh/media rescan FC. Also tried the option in TricksterMod and it crashes.
I actually don't like to reboot to be able to see new files...

Seems to be a new Kitkat bug...well didn't bother anymore why the rescan doesn't kick it automatically.
As I have TricksterMod installed I just use it's media scanner feature if I need to.

I tried the previously mentioned app but it didn't work. Unfortunately, I may have a corruption issue on my hands but I certainly hope not.
Also, you said in the OP that using the TricksterMod function crashed but now you're saying you still use it. Does it work even though it crashes? My TM has a sentence about the scanner not being available.

It works again for some weeks with Trickster as the dev integrated some kind of workaround

I just stumbled across this thread and figured I'd share a little quick and dirty widget I put together for my personal use since I was having the same issue.
It's a 1x1 widget (you may need to resize) that you simply click to initiate / force a media rescan. KitKat no longer supports this out of the box, due to abuse / battery issues, so you MUST have root in order to run.
The first time you attempt to run after clicking the widget, you will therefore need to grant root privileges to the widget, after which, you'll get a toast notification that the re-scan has been initiated.
To add to your homescreen, look for 'Media Rescan' in your widgets list.
Give it a few seconds or minutes (depending on how much media you've added, etc), and any missing images should now appear in your gallery.
This was quick and dirty, so there's not a lot of error checking, checking for privileges, etc, so YMMV in terms of functionality
Hope it helps. Works for me, no guarantees for anyone else

[APP] Task Identifier [Android 2.1 and up!!!]

!!!If you have Android 2.1 the app now is in the market!!!
Android 2.2 and higher are also still supported
This is not another Auto Task Killer, no.
Thanks for all the help from everyone! We've moved into a lite and full version now on Android 2.2 and 2.3 phones. This is a new program which allows the user to specify alert levels to phone tasks and give you insight into what your phone is really doing. Make a call, ever wonder what apps may be listening? What's going on when you phone is in standby? In creating this, I will say that I've been surprised a few times at what is really going on. I want any and all feedback as well as we are trying to make this into something special. I am the actual developer of this app.
The full version has:
-Common Names and Actual Application Icons
-No Ads
-Access to all App Settings
-Ability to change alert level from List Tasks
-Removed Internet and Location Permissions
And we have a slew of other features planned for only the full version, but we don't want to spill the beans on those quite yet, but they will enhance the tool greatly!
Both versions now have the new UI as well.
Anyone who had the beta should be notified to upgrade to the lite version now.
Download Task Identifier Lite from your phone:
market://search?q=pname:com.task.identifier
Download Task Identifier Full from your phone:
market://search?q=pname:com.task.identifier.full
I've also attached a QR Code to scan for both versions. Or just search for Task Identifier in the market.
I hope you all find this useful and enjoy!!

Hehe, I like how the only comment for the app (5 stars and "awesome" as comment) is currently by a user named 'x2k'. Hmmm.
I've just installed it and it's been less than a minute and I got an alert from an app that no longer needs to sync...So I disabled it (every little bit of non-sync means longer battery life!).
So far it's looking very promising! I'll definitely report back on my experiences!
Okay, first big thing...
Can you please resolve the cryptic app names to their more friendly name variants?
It's hard to read and make out the com.blah designations.
Thanks!
So far it seems like a cool app. I've been using WatchDog for ages to alert me when an app misbehaves.
But I'm confused about this app. When would you want to be using this? Can you give an example?
I'll keep it installed and see how it goes. Thanks.

Thanks for trying. This is more of an app to alert you as to what your phone is doing, ie what loads at a given point in time on your phone.

Thanks. I'm playing around with it and actively trying to make notifications pop up I opened Facebook and Google Reader started, as did Maps. Weird.
Which brings me to a question: how do we know whether the task started was CAUSED by the current app I'm using, or Android just randomly started it?
For example, it's possible Facebook opened Maps in order to try to get my location, but I don't see the connection between Facebook and Google Reader. Which is why I ask if it's random, or the app I'm using is causing other tasks to run.

You're welcome.
Sounds like a great troubleshooting tool. Nice work!
I'm liking this app more and more. A few more comments and requests.
Comments
* I like the main app window. Large fonts, long-press to get quick-help or short press to go to the item. Nice
* Screen off app start notification, nice!
Requests
1. Possible to get more detail about why or how an app was triggered? Like, was it triggered by a service? another app? etc. And did the triggered app take any actions? Like sending network traffic or queried the GPS and such?
2. The 'Setup Alerts' window is hard to read through, could you maybe add color so all the status 'Green' items have the word 'Green' in green font and so on?
Just added a 5 star rating on Market, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the suggestions. Those are features we truly will consider adding as it will just make the tool even better. Thanks!
There will probably be updates from time to time through the market
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
First of all, thanks for a great app.
I really like the fact that it reports on tasks/processes started while the screen was off!
I have some suggestions though:
1: When I click the icon in the app list to open the menu, it just shows the "Starting monitor" message and nothing else. I have to open an app to get the message in the pull down bar and click on that to start the application it self.
2: On my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 the layout of the application is just a bit to long for a full screen. We are talking about 1 cm or something.
3: I would very much like a log, so that I can check back, what applications started during screen off, and at what time/date.
4: The way the Android memory management works, I guess it's normal for Android to start and application/process to memory by itself from time to time. Is it possible to show this somehow? For what is interesting here is when an application is launching another application or process, and not when Android memory management is putting an application in memory.
Thanks for your great work, I'm looking forward to further updates to the application!
Just saw this on the front page and thought it looked pretty interesting. Installed a few minutes ago, but so far I like it. Not too intrusive with the pop-up.
As Namuna posted though it would be nice to get more detail.
Also to have the actual app name rather than com.xxx.
Really good work.
Installed.
I like the idea that we can see what tasks are really doing in the background. But as noted by some above, the notifications are a bit cryptic at the moment.
After installing and running the app, I started updating some of my other apps in App Market and my phone crashed. This has not happened before and I seems from my layman eyes that too many things might have been running in the background.
When the phone restarted, it too forever for anything to be displayed and the 3 widgets I had on the homescreen refused to load up. Again it seems to me that this app is popping up too many notifications - I have now stopped the app from starting up and running on start up.
I don't know whether this is unique to me or not though. I am running the app on Samsung Galaxy S (international) on stock Froyo with LauncherPro.
Still, I like this app and will use it more. Keep up the great work and many thanks.
Edit : just checked app settings again, and although I explicit unchecked app running on phone startup, the box is checked again. I unchecked the box and pressed save again. Re-entered app settings and the box is checked again. Am I missing something?
This looks very interesting.. So it's installed and ready for testing
Thank you very much for that app, it's awesome. I agree with the recent posters that the name of the app in addition to the com.blah.blubb would be a great help to identify the task. Also I'd like to see a possibility for a logfile.
Keep up the good work!
EDIT: I can hardly read the small, dark font when setting task levels since I use almost the very darkest display settings to save battery. So being able to chose the font color would be great but has absolutely no priority. Again: great app!Using it all day long now and I am surprised what tasks are being started!

[Q] Disabling camera without rooting

Hi amigos,
I do have HTC explorer, My office have a policy on employees to use only non-camera moblie phones. So I need a solution to this,is there any app available in market to disable the camera with out rooting. I browsed in play store, and I do got an app,but it works only on ICS platform. Pls suggest me any remedy pls..
Thanks,
Viki
Without rooting, I don't think so, sorry. You can block access to the app, requiring a passcode, but if you know the passcode, then it's not really much different to having the app there normally, plus it wastes battery.
Any app available?
Thanks for the reply SifJar. Is there any app which popups an error message kinda like that, if I tap to open camera. Since the one who gonna checking all this will be the security incharge in the gates, he lacks knowledge on android and stuffs.

try this root ur phone and use root explorer and see if u can delete the camera .apk.But make sure to take a backup of the same so u can use the same if needed in the future and at bangalore i have seem that some companies allow u to put a sticker on the camera lens to close it and thus not use the same in the company premises chek with ur co if this is OK it would be a better solution if this is acceptable:laugh:
Any other remedy without rooting

Actually, now that I think about it, it should be possible, yes.
There is an app called "Tasker" which allows you to run certain actions whenever certain things happen. One of the "contexts" you can set is an app being launched (e.g. the camera app). This context will then trigger a set of actions, which can include a whole variety of things from returning to the home screen to displaying a custom made popup. You could combine these two, so that whenever the camera is launched, it will return to the home screen and then display a popup saying some error.
There is a free one week trial of Tasker available here: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/download.html (any tasks you create during that first week will continue to work after this time, you just won't be able to add any more without paying for the full version, which is available in the Play Store or via the same link as the trial)
Once you install the trial, download the attached file, remove the .txt extension (put it there as XDA doesn't allow upload of XML files) and put it on your SD card in the folder "profiles" inside "Tasker" on your SD card, then import it into Tasker by long pressing on the button "profiles" at the top and then selecting "import" and then choose "Camera Disable". It is a task I made which I think should do the trick for you. If you want to edit the error message, tap on "No Access" in Tasker (should have a green arrow at it), then tap on "2. Popup" and edit the text accordingly.
EDIT: Also note that disabling the task is as simple as tapping the green tick beside it's name in Tasker, which will turn it into a red circle with a line through it to represent the task is disabled and camera can now be accessed again.
The error will also appear when launching "Camcorder".
Couldnt you get away with just hiding the camera app, that way you can easily say that you deleted it.

Any alterantives to Chrome2phone/Fox2phone?

I use Fox2phone quite a bit for easily sending links to my phone from the comp.
But off late i've been facing some issues where the links sent are a hit or miss..
need to restart the phone every now & then to get the links sent.
just wondering if there are any alternatives out there which does a similar function or perhaps even more?
thanks
Ya, PushBullet and it is awesome!!

In my opinion it trumps Chrome2Phone times 10.
Can push files/links/etc from browser to phone and vice-versa. Oh and you can also get notifications of pretty much anything (texts, email) on your Chrome Browser on your PC which is handy.
+1 Pushbullet
Wow. Great and useful app. Lists, maps, links, notes and even files. Super easy and mirroring of your phone's notifications in the reverse direction to your browser!

have you had any instances when this did NOT work?
shows as pushed from Firefox, but link doesn't appear in the phone..
if i open push bullet & view pushes, it shows the links there, but it doesn't appear in the phone
i can't even replicate this..
if i restart the phone & push something, i get it..
does this require sync to be enabled or something?
In Chrome at least, it works so fast, as in less than a second. I'm almost wondering now if it's not gulping juice in the background.

I've never had a problem where it doesn't pop up instantly, but I do use Chrome not that it would have anything to do with it. Maybe it does require sync?? Not too sure about that. So if you restart the phone it starts working but then it stops working after a while? Very confused, as I've never had a single issue with it. You should try going to the PushBullet website and contacting them, they may be able to help you.

i actually did get in touch with them..
i pressed send & even before i could blink i had a reply from a rep called Ryan.
He explained that since they use Google's Cloud service, if there is any delay at their end it may not deliver to us.
he did not mention anything about sync being on or off..
i also queried him about using different instances for each installation under 'devices', cos i use firefox at home & at office and both show up just as Firefox.
you can't really differentiate between them & can't be renamed either.
he said the team is working on a platform based segmentation (macs, PCs etc) & that should be coming soon

Doesnt chrome sync only mirror tabs/history/favorites of pages you are viewing or have viewed in chrome? With pushbullet you can create notes or lists that you can send to anything that has pushbullet installed. You can also directly push a file (max 25MB) from one device directly to another. I find it incredibly useful and use it on a daily basis.
And for those asking above, if you want to get the notifications instantly, you *DO* need Sync active on your mobile device. If you dont, just open pushbullet and manually update the list and it should appear. The amount of time it takes to reach your phone still relies on your network speed obviously, but it's normally pushing such a small amount of data that it's almost instantaneous.

Ahhhhhaaa! Thanks. That makes sense now. Thaaanks!
Sadly still not what I was looking for exactly I wish there was a way to just have it do nothing once the video has finished. Pity
If you mean that you want it to stay in the video playback screen when it reaches the end, that does not exist right now.

For You guys Again,
In MX Player, Goto Settings > Player & enable "Back to List".
If it's not working just export your settings & share here. I will check it.

When you look little few seconds videos and you need to rewatch it, exiting isn't really solution. It takes time to load player all the time. All it needs is just ability to stop playing without doing anything else. If needs, then you can exit, if needs you can click next.

It may not be a big issue if you are opening the video from MX Player itself. Opening from third party app may not be as fast as you are expecting since it checks & verify many system modules which are required to run properly.

Hi guys,
I reported this as a bug twice but got no reply. I have a solution though.
My "back to list" was checked correctly. However, whenever I fresh install the latest beta or alpha, the loop feature gets turned on by default. It's installed in thus state. I only figured this out by accident.
To stop it, you need to tap and hold on the fast forward/next button/arrow during a video.
You'll see one of the loop options selected. Unselect it and you should be good to go. Of course, as mentioned, make sure back to list is checked in settings too.

By default all loop settinga are disabled. You might have enabled once, when the device has automatically backed up your data. It's a misbehavior from android backup & restore feature.
Marshmallow auto backups the app data by default. It restores the data after reinstall. I had a similar issue of non default settings on fresh install. After installing just open the app properties & clear the data. If you want to disable auto restore data, goto device settings > Backup & Reset & disable "Automatically Restore" or disable entire feature by disabling "Backup my data".
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S5 using XDA Labs
Yea, that sounds like the most likely issue. It's a mistake I could have made by sitting on the device while listening or sleeping.
However, it took so long to figure this out because there's an manual backup and export feature in addition to the automatic restore in MM.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that in there because it was an issue that was driving me so crazy, I had already had begun moving to another player. Fortunately , that never needed to happen and hopefully it will help someone else.

How to block a Samsung app inner update pop-up, please ?

Good afternoon,
With the release of Android Pie for more and more Galaxy phones, Samsung is deploying new versions of their own apps following the One UI scheme. It is the case for Samsung Music, which is now available on the Samsung Store in a new version with an updated interface.
The problem I have is that I don't want to update my A8 from Oreo to Pie as I hate the new One UI interface (general look and layout, icons, multiwindow...), and that the new Samsung Music app theme follow the Pie mode: dark if night mode is enabled, white otherwise. So, when the app is used on a phone under Oreo, one can't switch to a dark theme and has to endure the bright background interface.
I therefore chose to keep the previous version of the app, but since the release of the new one, each time I launch Samsung Music after it was closed (not if only sent to background) and if wi-fi is on, the app shows a pop-up asking for update. I can discard it by clicking on "later", but it is painful to have to do this each time, and I am afraid of clicking on the "update" option, and then having to uninstall the app, reinstall the previous APK, reconfigure it and etc...
So here is my question: is there a way to prevent this pop-up to appear ? Auto-updates have been turned off under the Galaxy Store, but it seems that the check for update is built in the app itself. This pop-up is not considered as a notification by the Android OS as disabling them has no effect on it.
Thank you in advance if someone has got an idea.
I used to use that app and was somewhat happy you could tag with it and it might work. You may not want to switch, but if you give this app, musicolet a try, you might not need the samsung app anymore. No ads or anything and it gives you an eq, but if you want you can switch to system eq in the app. Very easy editting for tagging. If you export the M3U playlist, it'll be pretty much ready for car audio sd cards. Give it a go.
One thing, and i am not sold on pie either, but i've noticed the bluetooth operates consistently with any chosen eq and it's possible the days of "maybe the dolby will turn on this time" are gone.
First try musicolet. Colour it up too.
I think the Samsung app will not allow you to add lyrics, only show by tapping the art (if it's there)
The app i suggested you can add. You can also omit any directory or just allow one folder. No more ringtones or stuff that you can't omit. Sure, .nomedia but that is ridiculous. I am going to see if i still get Over the Horizon in my music collection. Gonna be sweet!
Thank you very much for this suggestion, I am going to give this app a try.
After all, it is what Samsung deserves, people dropping their apps because they behave in such a stubborn way, ignoring all negative feedbacks from users and willing to force them to accept silly changes (the same could be said about the new browser, which lose the video player).
I think you'll be happy with it. It has a lot of settings but you can back it up. It gets updated every so often and always gets better.
As far as Samsung goes i seem to either really like or really dislike what they offer. The email app is perfect for me now and i am as i said very pleased with the audio system functioning, as it should, without errors. It will bring up eq settings the way you set them for each audio source.
You can give it a try, can't recall if you did, and revert. I made a debloated one and posted it as a ROM but it isn't really. Just snips. Unless you're a W anyway...
Set Musicolet to system eq if you use viper and it'll use Samsung tone as well so i flattened the stock tones and let viper colour it.
Can't believe i am promoting pie, but besides the goofy icons and (likely temporary) theming options, it appears that it may be the beginning of major audio improvements. But, until i can plug my guitar into my phone and get zero latency and link with identical pc programs....
Anyway ever gone bald trying to install Viper? See the photos? I installed the apk from the xda labs app, rebooted because why not, played music and ticked that box. Never tried in Oreo. Tell me if it is the same. Huge leap for that app since i spazzed out a couple years ago installing it.
* just noticed it is aided by Magisk module. Not credit to Samsung i think.
Wow i screwed up a screw up. The magisk module was left over from the magisk version. Uninstalled that and after reboot the one i have needed to install the driver, reboot and works the same. Oops. A bit off topic too.
So, I tried the app you advised me, and I must say it does the job. At the beginning, I was a bit disthraugted in front of the complexity of settings, but once it is done, the UI is rather intuitive (far simpler than PowerAmp for example), and you easily find whatever command you need for a daily use. Editing tags in the app is a useful feature, I have been using MixPlorer Silver tagging plugin for that purpose so far.
I certainly am not as demanding as you are regarding audio quality and other features, as my needs are rather basic: plug earphones, navigate through my music files, play them, and control with the buttons of the earphones.
I could not install Viper, as it needs root. I have this phone only for two months, and I want to make sure it has no defect before voiding the warranty. I also need to read more thoroughly the posts dealing with the process and its consequences, as it seems that rooting the A8 induces some losses of useful features, such as the use of the fingerprint reader.
As for the email client, did you try K9-mail ? I don't know if the app works well under Pie, but it has exclusive options, such as the possibility, in IMAP mode, to delete a mail on either the client or the server, but keep it, on the contrary, on the server or the client.
Thanks again for everything.
I tried the email app and was impressed at how minimal the apk was. I have to get more information to set it up with my a accounts later and if all goes well it's stayin'.
So, in case you don't already know, the music app has a great feature that's a time saver and puts the whole idea of playlists consisting of the same song different in folders to rest.
When you look at it as text it's easy as hell. I think almost everyone here knows that. It's just a location like any computer file. But anyway use the export as M3U in playlists. I have all my songs on ext sd in a folder called music. Musicolet treats the music folder as root, so you'll get an output as i've pictured if you keep everything contained within one folder. All i have to do is stick my playlists outputted to an sd card and paste everything WITHIN
the music folder which is root, so all tunes are now as such and you need only edit.... NOTHING. Now this may be common to xda users, but think how many people have no idea the simplicity or that if they wanted they could type it out. That was me not long ago. If they had called M3U files, "buddy this is just written text of a filing system representing a portion of your music" it would have been..... stupid. But helpful.
So easy it's crazy.
