Just received an email with the Vlingo beta apk. I have not tried it yet but since this forum has helped me a ton, I figured I might be able to return the favor. Below are the instructions directly from the email:
Installing Vlingo for Android
1. Check the Unknown Sources item in Settings > Applications
This is required since Vlingo is not yet in the Android Market
Unknown apps screen
2. Open the Browser and browse to *********
NOTE: Please do not share this link with anyone else
3. When the file is finished downloading click on it and then click the Install button
4. Click the Open button when you see the Application Installed message
Add Vlingo to your Home Screen
1. Press and hold in an empty space on your home screen
2. Click Widgets (or sometimes it will be called Android Widgets)
Pick widget
3. Scroll down and click Vlingo
Add Vlingo to your keyboard
Speak anywhere you can type
1. Open Settings > Language & Keyboard
2. Check Vlingo Keyboard
Enable keyboard
3. Press and hold in any text box on your phone and click Input Method
4. Click on Vlingo Keyboard
Setup keyboard
5. You can now press the microphone icon (Speak button) to speak to any text box.
Known Issues
* Vlingo requires Android version 2.0 or higher to work
* While Vlingo should work on most Android 2.0+ devices, Vlingo has only been fully tested on the Google Nexus One and the Verizon Droid
Thanks!
This is a really great App. I really missed not having this when I switched over from the iphone.

you are aware that the default AOSP keyboard has this option right? as well as the newest HTC ime keyboard?, and the latest better keyboard?

Yeah, the default keyboard does do text to type, but Vlingo lets you open apps, call people and a lot more stuff. It is pretty cool.
The Vlingo voice recognition seems to work better and faster then the stock stuff.
What I really like is the voice search widget, it works really well. You can use commands like "find wal mart in Denver Colorado" and it will give you all the results on a map with details and you can call etc.
Works better then the other apps available IMO.

The voice search that's built into the navigator app does that as well. I can say "Navigate to Wal Mart", it brings me up a list of Wal Marts in the area, and fires up google navigation to guide me there. It's also location aware, so if I simply do a voice search on "Marriott", it brings up the google result for the nearest Marriott hotel to my current location.
Another cool little app is Choice Dialer. It's very good at voice dialing, but it also lets you do things like "Schedule an event for next Wednesday at 2 PM", or "Play music by Motley Crue"....
Definitely going to give this app a try. It'll take A LOT to get me to give up Swype as my regular keyboard.
Regardless of whether I end up using this particular app or not, with all the laws being passed about cell phone use while driving, voice recognition is no longer just a "neat toy", it's becoming a necessity. So I applaud anyone and everyone who is working to advance the state of the art in this field.
I have not been able to install it. They don't specify if there is an Android version requirement, which I am guessing there is. I am running 1.5.

+1 to that. I love Swype. Best app I have dled by far!
Finally got a chance to play around with this app this morning.
Observations so far... The keyboard seems pretty good, although I won't be replacing Swype with it. Voice accuracy seems solid. It doesn't handle "Navigate to" very well. If I say "Navigate to Wal Mart" it just brings up nearby wal marts in google maps. On the built in voice search, it fires up navigation and handles the request properly. Given that this is still a beta, it could be that they just haven't tweaked it to take advantage of Android's capabilities yet.
Seems about the same speed as google's voice search.
But now the deal breaker. I've been getting frequent "unable to connect to server" errors this morning. I've verified that my data connection is working fine. This may be a beta, but they have versions for other handsets that are in production, so the beta thing is no excuse for their servers being down.
All things considered, this seems like a solid effort, but I don't see where it brings very many advantages to the table in comparison to the built in voice search. And if their servers aren't reliable, I can't really justify putting it into daily use no matter how good it is.
swype keyboard for life, but this vlingo could go somewhere, my only problem is, it didnt give me the widget.
i uninstalled and re-installed. nothing.

That's odd. The widget's working fine for me.
In truth, it doesn't really add much. You can get nearly the same result by just putting the app icon on your home screen. The widget does eliminate one extra button press, but for some unknown reason they made it 4 spaces wide.
Not enough functionality to justify losing that much screen real estate, IMHO.
EDIT: Ah, you can set it to come up when you long press the search button. Accomplishes the same thing as the widget, and doesn't use up 4 spaces on your screen.
Ooh, another annoyance...
They use yahoo rather than google for searches. No place to change it in the settings.
Another observation...
Google's voice recognition cuts me off after a fairly short time. Vlingo has let me compose some pretty lengthy emails all at one shot, whereas creating the same message with the stock voice recognition required me to do it in 4 or 5 chunks.
This almost makes writing email on my phone easier than my desktop with the full sized keyboard.
Do you have to be using it as the keyboard, or can it be used as a stand alone talk to text, or for opening programs and what not?

You do not have to use the keyboard part of it. Everything else will work just the same without using its keyboard.

Hello, I am writing this on a Vibrant, I am using it until the HD7 launches, only thing is, as I use it I say " oh I'm gonna miss that".
Is anyone regretting the switch? Are you happy you switched? You don't really have to have an HD7 just a Windows Phone 7 device, I really like it but I am worried about how many apps there are etc. I heard it has increased to 1,000 + in the first 2 weeks, that's pretty good. However, it can be just like Android, where they boast about numbers and the majority of the apps are pure garbage.... help me out please and thank you.
If you are interested on what I want on a device:
Games
News apps
Fast web browsing
Music
Oh and if it could make phone calls, that's always nice too...

Why worry about the apps?
There will be a paid app for your to add a custom ringtone really soon
Well there are both non Xbox games and Xbox games and so there is and will be a lot of good games on WP7.
There are a few news applications already for example BBC News app.
The browser is very fast compared to Android and iOS.
Their Zune music player works well well and is better than Androids music player.

How, I thought such settings were not allowed for applications
I miss Chrome-To-Phone and Android2Cloud
I miss all the tiny apps that integrated into the 'Share' menu.
WP7 is currently lacking in the sharing department, but hopefully with apps developed? I don't know if they can easily.
One of my faves on android: 'Share' to TinyUrl applet, which copies a tinyurl link to your clipboard automatically to the link you shared, so handy.
I also miss Share to twitter, and twitter 'push' notifications! I want a notification when I get an @reply and not have to set up email alerts...
I miss using the phone LED and not just the display as a flashlight...
I miss settings... there are no settings to tinker with on WP7... it's all dumbed down.

This is one of the biggest things i'm missing, there's no menu button with extra settings that popup (well it wouldn't be like that but you know, nothing similar).

As I recall, the context-sensitive toolbar at the bottom of the screen is the equivalent of Android's "Menu" button. And what's in that menu/toolbar is dependent on the application developer. Its not that you are missing these 'extra settings', its that the application developer has not created any extra settings for you to play with.
Some apps will have tons of settings, some won't have any. Its the same with Android apps. You've just gotta wait for the developer to add these extra settings (if they even want to).

Hello all! I had a thread but it was locked because it was a paid app. Now, there is a free one to check out. It's called Prox Lite and it has just been added to the Android market.
Prox makes use of the phone's proximity sensor and accelerometer to initiate an action. Prox figures out what orientation you are holding the phone and then activates that action when you swipe your hand across the proximity sensor. Prox Lite has 4 actions:
*Flat - Emulate home button
*Toward - Expand and contract notification panel
*Left - Launch phone dialer
*Right - Launch browser (google.com)
All you have to do is turn on the service through the app and then tilt the phone in the direction you are trying to activate the action for and then pass your hand over the proximity sensor and it will activate the action for that direction.
You can amaze your friends, and feel like a Jedi. Imagine the look on your friend's faces when you do things without even touching the phone itself. Just to ease your mind, Prox is disabled when the screen is off and when you are in a call. Normal proximity sensor usage is preserved during these situations to you don't have to worry about Prox doing things when you don't want it to

He also wrote a little write up here if you want to check it out.
And, here is a link to the android market
Download Prox Lite from Android Market
Download Prox Lite from GetJar
If you have an issue where it doesn't show up in the market or it says that your device is incompatible, I have made Prox Lite available to XDA peeps via direct apk. If your device will allow install from the market, please use the link above, otherwise, click here to download the apk directly. Downloading from the market allows for easier tracking so I would appreciate it if you would download it from there This is for the members that cannot find the version because of certain software...
P.S. Some users are having trouble with making this work properly. If you are having issues with the left and right actions, try just a slight tilt and then a swipe. Refer to the video for an example of this. Also, different phones have different proximity sensors and some of them just happen to work better than others. Give it a try to see what you think and don't forget to leave a rating in the market. I hope you enjoy this app

This is really cool. My biggest concern right now, having only just tried it for a few minutes, is potential battery drain. If it doesn't end up being too bad, i may consider trying the full version. It would be nice to be able to hide the notification bar icon, but the full version may already have that.
Battery drain is really not all that bad. The listeners are unregistered when the screen goes off. During normal phone use during the beta a few months ago, Prox was only using around 3 - 4 % battery during a normal day. But alas, this depends entirely on how much you actually use the phone itself. If your screen is on for the better part of the day, then drain will occur. But under normal use, it really isn't that bad. Thanks for the feedback

Yeah. I was originally going to put it into the Productivity category on the market, but I think it's more of a novelty than an actual productive applications. It's just cool to show people. There are some things in the paid version that can be put to actual use though. There is a Timer mode that activates an action based on how long you cover the sensor. It could be useful in a car dock or a cradle at home.

I picked up the pro version. So far it's pretty solid. Battery drain is pretty much non-existent, maybe 2% with a lot of screen time.
Some things I would like to see:
Tasker integration (this would be the best addition by far).
A combination of the Timed and normal types so you could hold over the sensor longer for a different option.
Being able to hide the icon in notifications.
Media button options like Previous Track, Play/Pause, Next Track.
Simulating a long-press of the search button to bring up Voice Actions.
Profiles that automatically change based on what app you're in.
Thanks for making this, I've been using it a lot today, and it has already become habit. Keeps my screen cleaner, too.

Im glad that you're liking it! A lot of the things you have mentioned have already been pointed out to me and I am thinking which ones will actually be possible. Some of the things will require root access. But I have a summer job atm (10 1/2 hour days) so I am not really tinkering with it right now. When I get back into school mode, you can pretty much expect to see some if not all of this added to the pro version. I appreciate the feedback and be on the lookout to some awesome future updates
P.S. please leave a comment and rating in the market

It is not currently on any other market but the Android Market. I may add it to some of the ones you have mentioned but it may be a bit before it gets there.
My portal says that it should show up as compatible for the Desire HD. I see that you are running MIUI so that may be the reason for it not showing up. Some custom ROMs and leaked builds of Android cause this and I have no reason why.

So, I've heard the new update 2.21.401.10 still has the well known limited multitasking issues (see YT videos for One X, it's the same for us: http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...0.0.0.119.352.3j1.4.0...0.0...1ac.R68YKWQ8QnE )?? Is it true? How can we persuade HTC to keep standard Android multitasking?
I've also heard the audio issues (crackles, trashed sounds, some micro-stutters sound-related. You can easily notice this with games, f.e. Pinball Arcade or Mame4Droid etc. Won't hear these problems on GS2 and other Android phones) are still there too, so the audio driver is still the same.
Should I go back to GS2? Multitasking problem is very important for me...
I don't have issues with sound now, never have. A lot of games ether aren't compatible completely (gta 3), and others are just trash audio. If you want to test audio run a GOOD mp3 file, if it crackles its your phone....
Sent from my HTC One S running Axiom S
the multitasking of the one X and S isnt' bugged, it is in this way for a choice of HTC. Basically the system doesn't left completly open apps but it freeze them which is almost the same of restart the app from zero more or less. This is because HTC want to keep some resources free to have a more fluid sense experience.
Anyway if you have an unlocked device you can flash this script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27318828#post27318828 that should give you real multitasking and leave the cool HTC interface ( the task manager ) to swith from an app to another. I would try it but I don't want to unlock my device at the moment.
none of the scripts work. wait till developers will fix it on kernel level. no other solutions here.

I agree with hexaae. It's worth nothing having a super-fluid UI if it means killing your opened browser when you try to live it in background. You just can't browse between browser and email: how is this supposed to be called multitasking??
I really believe this choice of HTC's is senseless... On a smartphone with 1GB of RAM...
Edit1: by the way, what is the "background processes limit" option in "development options" supposed to do? Possible values are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, default.
Edit2: would it be an idea to make a poll and see how many people would be interested in this?

It worked for me, problem was the battery started draining like crazy. Which got me thinking, the reason HTC did this was battery life. Nothing else. Sense was still just as smooth for me, but apps would multi task like I used to, but my battery would last less than half as long. So I went back to stock and am getting decent battle life again.

Well this is quite natural, you should manually clear everything once that you put the phone on stand-by ( and here the cool HTC task manager interface lack of a " close all" button ) or if you don't want to do this you can put task killer widget on the home that kill everything by a tap. Anyway this would kill also the background process not started by you which is not good so HTC should really put a "close everything" button on task manager interface so we can kill just recent apps opened by the user and not from the system.

It lacks the close all option because it is not needed. You dont have to close any apps unless they are something that need to be operating all the time like music player when it is playing songs or navigator and stuff like that. There is no difference for your batterylife whether you clear the "recent apps" list or not. And its called "recent apps" for a reason because it means that it has nothing to do with the fact is that application actually running or not. It has always being like that in android. It just makes it easier to jump between apps.
Using task killers and such only increases battery usage since the app it has closed needs to be loaded again when you use it the next time instead of it being just unfreezed from the memory.
HTC has set the automatic killer which kills apps on the background when running out of memory way too aggressive when you compare that to how it works on vanilla ICS or even older HTC phones running android 2.2 or 2.3.
However the latest update made multitask way better for One S. And Iam talking about the one which updatet android version to 4.0.4. Now you can jump between many apps without the fear of them closing immediately so Iam very happy with that now and it works as its should be.

Please can you test this?
Open Google in the stock browser and type in something to search (but don't start searching!)... then switch between other apps and finally go back to the browser. Does it still reload and delete your input text?
I'm going to test the script now. Available memory is not an issue for me, as I removed Sense and am running Nova Launcher. My available memory usually sits around +230, ranging from 170-270. Haven't seen it drop below that. As for battery life, as long as you actually use the HTC multitask button and kill the apps that you don't want to go back to, the battery shouldn't really be affected, or at least the only effect will be a result of the apps that you actually want running, so it's a trade off, right? Keep in mind that means not killing the processes that will be automatically restarted by Android (ie using an auto task killer, or some pre Froyo type apps), only user apps that you recently launched and are now killing.

Ok, I just did what you asked. After doing that with the default browser I was able to jump between Dolphin HD which had two tabs open, youtube app and chrome without any of them closing. And I even went to home screen between them. I think thats pretty good compared how it worked previously. Because then often it was enough if I just jumped to homescreen and then right back the previous app to make it close.
Confirmed.
Official stock ROM, via OTA, ver. 2.31.401.5... and there IS multitasking, finally! Task manager is much more conservative (around 70-80% of cases) with executed apps in the multitasking-history-menu...
Yes, also the browser now won't reload pages if you switch to the mail app for a moment and go back...
~200MB free mem.
We've been at it for a while now, but it's finally done.
Smart IR Remote was accepted from the first try into Samsung Apps, and no you can download it from here:
http://apps.samsung.com/mars/topApps/topAppsDetail.as?productId=000000880593
It has ALL the remotes included in the phone app, with all the buttons, so you're no longer limited by the WatchON app to control your devices.
When it comes to features, obviously this is a phone so the edit mode will be simply a method to delete useless buttons, and that's why we put the "Lite" stamp on it. We're working on a way to fully edit the app though!
Best of all: this app is free for a limited time, until we make it a "full" app. We might keep it free forever for people who bought the app for their phones though!
Feel free to report any issues, bugs or suggestions!
Very slick.
Works well with my Sky box.
Sadly doesn't support my Sony TV - KDL - 40L4000 so need to find something else fully compatible - which isn't easy.
Definitely appears better than the sammy remote
Don't let that take away from your efforts though. This was 100% needed, works exactly as advertised and even allows you to customise the display.
With a bit of work I'll have this setup even better than my harmony.
Some feedback may be to allow you to add buttons for different devices to the same screen, hich would help us users with AV systems and different bits doing different jobs. Either that or support for activities that support mutliple devices. i.e. Activity - TV: Amp used for volume, Sky box for channels, tv for picture settings etc.
Nice!
been waiting for this since i got my Gear 2!
and this shuld win Samsung Gear App challenge!
Installation failed. Try later.(0) error. It's driving me crazy.

Should definitely work with your Sony TV. Please send an email at [email protected] and we'll see what can be done to sort this out.
As for combining remotes .. we're getting there Just you wait and see
@RiverCity.45 I know, a real pain. We're trying to figure out what exactly causes it and to see if there's anything we can do on our end to fix it.
Oh man, I've loved the Smart IR app ever since I discovered it. Can't wait to get this rolling on my Gear 2!
I am running into a weird issue though - for some reason, the app installed fine - I of course don't have a remote set up in the Gear 2 app, so it asks me to choose a remote. Press continue, list of device categories. I choose a category, and it loads forever. No error message or anything. I tried restarting both devices, but no luck. I'm wondering if it might be because of the ROM I'm using (Dynamic Kat 4.1). I do occasionally see "The app can't reach our servers, please try again later", but after a minute or two it just starts loading forever again.
About how long should it take to show a list of devices? Any other ideas of what else to try?
Great work! This was the app I was waiting for, finally I can manage all my sound&tv devices. Thanks a lot.
Combining buttons from multiple devices would be great. Glad you are working on it. And maybe one up swipe for the power toggle of all devices at once?
Is Philips htl4110b missing?
Thx again!

Could be the ROM, but it's unlikely, especially since the list of categories actually does show up for you. It shouldn't normally take more than a few seconds to load. Does this happen on all categories? Can you try reinstalling ?

Can you try any other models in there to see if they are a match for yours ? It's hard to build a full search on this (like we have on the phone app) given the current keyboard state ..

I am almost sure it is missing. Maybe you can add the device? I found another that is working for most button actions, but one button doesn't work.

Awesome app, now if only to have an option to rearrange buttons & figure out how to uninstall stock watchon remote

Awesome!!! This is my favorite app on my phone! Great job guys!!!
app is nice. However, my first intention was to find and test devices that I copuldn't control with WatchOn.
For example, I have an Arcelik air conditioner , model 15040. On the app, I could find Arcelik 15030. It didn't power on my 15040. Are they really different ?
Can you add it ?
Also, I saw that Philips LivingColors is available in "home equipment " category. AFAIK, LivingColors does not use IR to control. Instead it uses Zigbee (Smartlink) wifreless protocol. And I tried it with my LivingColors and didn't work.
How can we make this work with LivingColors ?
Thanks.
Not showing up for me in the app store. Gear2 Neo/S5 Active
I would like to be able to edit the layout of a control on the phone. It a bit clunky to do this on the watch.
Hey guys! For all remotes/database - related questions please email us at [email protected]. It's hard to keep track of things here
Thanks!
As for the app not showing for some of you, that's something we're trying to find out from Samsung how to fix. Here's the list we support (basically checked ALL when uploaded to Samsung Apps): http://pastebin.com/rcu7WHZg
@mrmrmrmr Living Colors has a few models with an IR receiver

I reverted to a prior custom ROM, and I no longer have any problems installing from Galaxy App store. :good:

That was my impression as well - it's working somewhat, just not letting me see the devices within the categories. So far, I've tried a few categories (TV, Audio Video System, Game/Media Manager) to no avail, but I'll try it again here. I did just try a reinstall, might try to uninstall, restart everything then reinstall again. It's really weird, because after selecting a category, it just sits there on the gear, spinning rather fast. I'll also check with the ROM dev as well just to make sure it isn't something on that front.

Excellent! Thank you
I have an issue in with support, but just wanted to chime in here. I am also having an issue setting up remotes. I can install the app, pick a category and then a device. I can get so far as doing the first power button test, but when I try to tap "it works" it just shows me the gear animation as if it's doing something but doesn't progress past that. It happens with ANY remote I tried to add.
What I've done to troubleshoot - rebooted both devices, uninstalled, reinstalled, same result. On a rooted Galaxy Note 3 with Hyperdrive ROM build 8 (4.4.2), Gear 2 Neo is stock, unrooted.
Ultimately, what I want out of this is something that can control my receiver power, input switching and volume, as well as my projector on/off on one remote panel - so I'd love a remote that can combine functions from different devices. I'd be fine with paying for an app with that functionality.
Well now I feel dumb...
I wanted to give a status update. So I was still running into one heck of a brick wall getting the app to work properly on my Gear 2. I admit, it was rooted, but I didn't realize the firmware I was on (*NDB) was outdated. I just tried to connect to Kies to see if I could bring it back to stock firmware, and I find out I had an update to a new firmware (*NE5). Performed the update, and boom - app loads like it should, I can select a category, and I now see a list of devices! I figured it would be worth mentioning if any others are seeing this issue. Now that it works properly, I'll test it out on a few devices. If you don't hear from me soon, consider that good news!
