Multitask like pre

Hi everyone,
A friend of mine just got a Palm pre plus. Nice phone, not bad at all. I still prefer my Nexus but one tool really did caught my eye on the Palm.
The multitasking ability is wonderfull on the Pre. the ability to view small windows of every tasks you are running, moving left of right to switch and up to close/kill an app is just plain awesome.
I know jailbroken Iphone can download a similar app through cydia. So if the Iphone can do it, Why can't I find anything alike for Android?
That would be a great app that for sure many would download as it is just nice looking.

You can simply long press the home button. It's not all your running tasks, just your six most recently executed applications. It's not nearly as cool of an interface as the Palm Pre may have, but it effectively does the same thing. For killing processes I recommend Advanced Task Manager.
I'm sure we'll have a similar interface on stock Android in future releases. 2.5 perhaps?

Proswitcher looks fantastic.

Now that we have a phone with some decent power, I'd love to see a graphical task switching app with thumbnails and gestures like this!

Having used the two multitasking solutions available on cydia (multifl0w and kirkae) I can report that they are buggy at best. In theory it works well but in practice, I often had apps crash when backgrounded (pandora was a fine example of this). The phone was not meant for it and could barely support it.
Using backgrounder alone with pandora worked well most of the time but even then pandora would close.
Personally, I have no real compelling interest in a pre-esque multitasking ability on the n1 but if someone came out with one, I would definitely try it out for no other reason than "why not".

yep, backgrounding + task switching via card view on the iphone (specially through kirikae) was nice to have and would like to see how a similar solution would operate on the n1 - which supports unfettered multitasking out of the box.
aside from task switching, i would really like to have a nice way to invoke favorite, instead of recently used apps.

You're gonna end up with like....8 million cards when you want to switch.

if you want to use a set of favourites, why not just make the "home" desktop where you keep your favourites? Seems to satisfy that ask, no?

You can create a folder on your home screen, name it favorites, then dump shortcuts of all your favorite, top 5 or top 10 apps in there.

legitimate suggestions and really i'm in no way being critical about current support for folders or shortcuts. pre like task switching or swipe-to-invoke features would be cool - but not necessary. bottom line - my n1 runs circles around my 3gs - without jbreaking.

I have to disagree with you on this Sir. proswitcher and Multiflow are both apps made by some user to compensate a HUGE lack in the Iphone. They are comparable to Cyanogen making multitouch on the Nexus (on the video it was shaky and unprecise at best). Besides, they can hardly work well because of the phone's design (solo tasking).
Now you've got the Nexus: Lots of power, and able to multitask. So with such a device I don't think it would be SOOOOO complicated to actually make a switching feature like it exists with great success on the Palm PRE.
I had to spend quite a long while the first time on my wife's Iphone just to get Proswitcher (unlock/root/blackstuff/cydia/backgrounder/proswitcher/settings) to get this important app: because quite frankly, yes it's buggy but it's awesome to be ABLE to do more than 1 thing at the same time like looking for apps and installing apps for example... My Pal who's got the PRE now has this feature built it. His PRE is nice, no offense, but the Nexus kills it. This feature would be one of the only thing I'm really jealous about.

proswitcher is sooo cool its almost sickening! our n1's can run x2 amount of apps as the iphone and yet we only get to switch between the most recent 6?! thats weak! i bet if we keep this thread alive (and on topic) we can see some development. lets see what dev is up to the challenge. i would definitely pay for something like this!

We are able to switch between any open apps by loading up the app again from either the drawer or any shortcuts you've made. I understand you may mean by touch holding the home button but tbh its far far easier to press home once and nav to your app, and having it open instantly. Rather than sifting through pages to find it.

I was basing it solely on the fact that our N1's have twice as much RAM as the iPhone, 512 vs 256 respectively. Of course it depends on size of the app but it wasnt meant to be scrutinized over.

Yes I do mean by holding the home button, but I find it more work to have to open the app drawer and sift through my 100 apps, though alphabetical, can be cumbersome. To each his own though.
Still would love to see a more effective and efficient method of switching between apps than the obvious (placing shortcuts on the desktop), sifting through app cards is cooler than sifting through the app drawer. Perhaps if the cards were limited to a certain number so it doesnt get out of hand. Who knows!

[Q] New to Android; need customization tutorial

Longtime WinMo user (now with TP2). Just bought each kid an Android phone.
Been using XDA for a long time to modify my WinMo, add apps, etc...
Not familiar with the Android OS lingo and need to bone up so I can hook my kids up with some cool stuff
Did SEARCH but didn't find specific thread to read. Little help?

Well..
With android (especially with HTC Sense, HTC's UI) you can add plenty of little things to customize your phone. From the top
You can move application icons from page to page on the homescreen along with widgets. to add an application to the homescreen you can open the app drawer/list and longpress it and drag it to the homescreen. Once on the homescreen you can move it around.
Along with Apps you can add widgets to the homescreen, a widget is an app that runs in the homescreen it can do things like display a news ticker, enable/disable settings (power control widget), and other things like play music and search boxes. these can be very useful for getting a quick glance at information without opening up the app.
To change the background you can longpress the homescreen and select wallpapers.
If your phone supports it you can use live wallpapers, search for them on the market or on XDA.
One tip is dont install lots of apps! dont go and download every app you see it will slow down your phone, also dont use task managers as it messes with android native application closing process.
Also the biggest customization of all if your phone is rooted (IE: full permissions and access to the system) and has a hacked bootloader you can load custom roms that are themed or have a big performance boost.

I spent the weekend tearing through other forums
Found a program called Sideload Wonder Machine that allows apk files to be put into the Aria without having to "root" the phone or otherwise dcik around with it. Worked pretty good after I found the USB Driver to sync it up with my laptop. that was a bit of a process in and of itself.
At the end of the day (weekend) I didn't really find too much to load into the phone that was not already available at the droid market. Swype, yes, but not for this phone. Loaded F-Secure anti-theft too but that, too, is not for this phone.
I am not sure how business savvy these droids can be but they are cool. Kids love them. The UI operates much like the iPhone and much less like WinMo.
I'll keep dciking around with it and see what happens. Thanks again.

i agree dont let the inteface fool you, android works as a tool just as well as winmo if not better

[Q] True Multitasking?

I'm wondering if there is an app that allows true backgrounding or multitasking in Android. In other words, whenever I switch an app and go somewhere else, and then return back to a previous app, I would expect that app to be in the same state as when I left it.
This currently only happens with a few apps, it's hit or miss. So far I haven't found a fix or an app that resolves this issue. Not to create a fight, but the iPhone had background apps that kept apps in memory so that when you returned the app was in the same exact state as when you left it. Thanks all.

I use the home key in order to do this and it works for the apps that i have done it with. Was just using it this way the other day to jump between file explore and an online post. I would use file explorer hit the home key go back to my browser. Then hit the home key while in the browser and would go back to file explorer and everything in both apps was as i left them. Try that see how it works for you.

If you hit the back button to exit the app, it will usually exit it- hit the home button and it will background it. Android DOES 100% true multitasking, realize if you run low on ram, the kernel will kill old processes and start killing your oldest used apps as it needs to.

Yes i already knew of the home button function, but that DOES NOT always work! For example lets say im was in the middle of writing a tweet in Tweetcaster and i leave the app (by pressing home) to reference somthing in the Browser. If I then bring up the recent apps and reselect Tweetcaster, my unfinished tweet will be gone as the app will instead be in its starting screen.
Likewise another app that doesnt truly multitask is the WatchESPN app. You'll lose your video if you leave the app no matter what.
There are many other apps that behave like this. I was hoping there was a seperate app that offered "TRUE" multitasking or backgrounding, which keeps apps in memory so that u can return to an app in the exact state as you left it, but for ALL APPS and not just some. Thanks

99% of the apps I've used and use pick up right where I left off, sometimes even days later. There probably is a few that wont as you described, which is probably due more to how the programmer coded the app to exit.
I'd say most (all of my apps do) truely multitask

Don't try the recent apps just try clicking the app itself.

That doesn't make any difference I don't think. Recent apps is just a list of those same program icons listed in a convenient pop-up window, ordered by usage.

Whatever your preference, I was just mentioning I don't think there's any functional difference that would make one way any more effective than the other.

I agree it probably doesn't matter which way. Could just be the app he is using. Some apps are set up to shut down with the back button and/or the home key. So at this point if either of those don't work then I'm out of ideas. I do know that android caches the apps you use so they should be saved in there current state. If they are not then maybe try a restart as your memory may be low so android is closing out these apps to compensate. One last question are you using a task killer/manager.

I use Taskswitcher from the market for exactly this on Atrix. Had no problems yet and didn't drain the battery either.

I understand that Android CAN offer true multitasking, but thats NOT 100% always the case.
As others have said, some apps don't behave for those times when you minimize and not exit the app because you want to return to the app. WatchESPN, TweetCaster, native Android music app, and in-browser streaming video are only a few of the Apps that fail to multitask or "background".
For those instances, it seems Android offers a setting to the developer to either have the app behave in the background for easy multitasking, or it also allows developers to basically kill the app once its in the background, making "True Multitasking" anything but!
So thats why I was hoping there was an app that took this "backgrounding" option out of the apps hands and instead stored all apps into memory that you wanted to be backgrounded. For instance you could background apps either by a hotkey action or you could kill an app so that it doesn't background, this way not all opened apps get backgrounded and use up all system resources.
Anyway, thats what I've been looking for and haven't found an implementation like this. Hopefully I've just overlooked and someone can enlighten me?! Thanks all.

Yea would like to know as well. Blackberry playbook does true multitasking like a PC. Games and youtube video run in backgroud without pausing when we switch.
Havent come across that in android. Maybe i missed it somewhere. I think. Android has task switching' instead of multitasking?

So you would actually want a video to keep playing when something else had fullscreen focus? That just doesn't make sense. As a developer, I'll tell you that it is certainly possible, but FFS why? Now if I'm listening to music, that makes sense. Run it in the background while I'm looking up stuff on the web or something, but most audio apps DO do that.

I feel that we should be able to run youtube videos / games running in background just like a PC. I mean our phones are as powerful as PCs from few years back. Say I have one tab running email/browsing and other a video. There may be a time where you want to quickly switch to another task/app and move back to watching the video. It may sound impractical but there should be an option to have this.
Else its just 'task switcher' like ios > 4. I like the way BB playbook has TRUE multitasking.

I may get some flak for this but webos is the shizznit at true multitasking and the way all these companies steel from each other these days and the palm people that went to Google they should implement the card stile multitasking on Android some how. That would be killer. Don't make it look just like webos but something like it.

edit: just installed the app..sometimes the app makes the phone go crazy!! i have to logout fro the browser or turn off wifi for the phone to become normal.

This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.

@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway

After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

I love AirDroid!!! It helps me to transfer photos and files from my phone to my PC wirelessly. I don't need to carry my cable anywhere with me. It's a great app. Nice job!

You don't need to install on the PC. You just need to open the browser and visit web.airdroid.com to log in. Then you can manage you phone on the web. Easy, right?

What apps, root or non root, would you guys use?

Apps for what? Any apps? I'm a big fan of Read it later (even if they changed the name).

So basically this post is due to you being too lazy to access your own needs ?!?!?!?
WTF is anyone else going to know about what apps you need ....... its kimnd of highly dependent on your needs and desires and no one one here has any clue about that.
Best NOT to just pile apps onto your phone because assholes on a forum said so (Unless you one of those types who has to try anything suggested by another person like its a pavlovian reaction) , much better to just add new apps as you feel you need them.
Aim being to support what you want and need to do rather than just installing tons of crap for no reason.

I prefer apps like Locale and Tasker as they help me put the Smart in Smartphone.

A collection of Free Apps
Here are some of my recommendations
QuickPic: For images, better than default Gallery. Plus options to hide folders.
MX Player: Video play is smooth and there are multiple apps based on your processor type
Winamp: Select audio by artist/genre etc.
Any.Do: Super cool UI. Does a great job in reminding you of things to do
Mobile Backup II: I flash my device a lot, this helps me keep track of my SMS & Call logs.
By far, GoLauncher is the best Launcher I have seen. If you install GoLauncher, also go for some of the GoWidgets such as GoSwitch & GoWeather.

I agree with QuickPic and GO Launcher, both very good apps. I want to use GoWeather but I've read that it isn't very accurate.
