GPS software questions - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

HI
i am looking for a gps software.
I was ready to buy copilot 8, i used to have version 7 and was quite happy with it. Then I realised that copilot 8 for HD2 is a "special" version.
For example there is traffic info with it. Is that correct?
I dont want to blame the development before it happend, but i very suspicious that they will put effort on this version when they have already a general windows mobile version.
so I look at igo8 but
1) how to buy it, the only site i found is to buy a card... Do i need to buy the card, then do some magic to put it on my own card.
2) it seems that to get it working is quite difficult from the number of post so what are the chances for an average guy ?
3) not sure if TMC is working or not, i found post stating both.... and is it free or a subscription ?
i dont want to start a thread " i have the best ..." but any advice for a gps with traffic info with european maps will be welcome.
thanks

it does work with some effort
I do not use TMC so no help there I saw the thread that supposedly says you can make TMC work. when I get time I will try it out but I manage with out it.
BUT I was able to load "Nav N GO" version 8.3.4.102680 on my HD2 and it is great.
the GPS lock some times as fast as 2 sec. flat. (on my old tilt it never took less the a minute from cold start.)
FYI> my program is a cracked version because I was not able to get an upgrade from my original 8.0 version soft. (yeah I do not want to by the card since I want to use a lot of maps and the only version you can by is on the 4Gb card (my map folder only is 4Gb ))

Applications that do not work on Diamond 2

These are a few non-working apps I discovered when trying to customise my TD2 on day one.
1) HTC's gprs monitor refuses to install.
2) Core player exits on installation complaining about a "problem". - NOW FIXED
3) I already mentioned Tomtom6 on another thread.
Anyone found any others?

As I've seen coreplayer showing video on the Diamond2 in one of the reviews I'd say that something has gone wrong during your customisation.
Core player 1.3 work perfectly on my Diamond 2 !!!!
A problem has occurred with player.exe
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
That's what happens when I run the program. It installs and appears in the program list but just won't run. I can't tell you what version it was either.
Maybe I should try a different version.
After a hard reset and direct install onto the device from a cab file I can now confirm that Coreplayer 1.3 does work very well on the D2. I have amended my original post. Thanks.
CoPilot Live 7 HTC Touch Diamond Edition does not work with TD2 and CoPilot support phone number is useless for any help.

There is a new updated version of Co-Pilot specifically for the Diamond2, phone technical support on 0871 6412 540 (in the UK) and ask them for the download link, I did and my Co-Pilot is working ok.
If you try and load the D1 version you wont see many of the graphics on the screen, to get round this you can try using a non HTC old version and use the cab file from that, you should be able to find one floating around somewhere. The graphics are still not correct using the old generic cab but its usable.
Thanks for the reply and I did contact them and was given a link to the Diamond 2 program and it works ok.

Can you let me know what that version is? Im running 7.7.0.134 (full version with SD card etc, not Diamond version - which I think is the same but just comes without SD card and CoPilot Central PC app) but thats been the "latest" for nearly a year. Does this "new" version support the 480x800 resolution correctly.
It runs fine, just that the onscreen keys etc appear squashed.
Be grateful if you could let me know.
I just got the latest download v7.8.0.162 from them two days ago and was told by there sales person that the only thing that does not work is the TD2 Zoom Bar.
I have tested the program and it runs very smooth
How does this compare feature-wise to the TomTom mentioned in other threads for the TD2?
Co-Pilot
The version I am running is 7.8.0.162 Data NAVTEQ.EU 07Q3. v7.1.13.1.5, my understanding is that it has a higher screen resolution than the old Diamond 1 version, the menu system is a bit different. I think this version new will also run on the Touch HD.
I was told by Co-Pilot technical support that version 8 is on the horizon and will be out later this year.

In my opinion Co-Pilot is the better choice, for example you can specify the sort of road preferences you would normally drive on for each sort of road and enter the average speed you drive at to create a user profile that is normally quite accurate, there is a better zooming facility on Co P and I usually drive with the screen zoomed out so i can see all the small roads and villages around my route.

satnav on old xda 2. is it possible

HI all, Ive just been given an old XDA 2 (II). It seems to work ok.
What is the latest version of Windows that this can run and is there a tutorial on how to install it
Before I invest any time or money could somebody give me a pointer as to if I could run tom tom with this?
If so what do i need?
I have used a nokia 6680 with a bluetooth receiver running tomtom and this worked fine. I am assuming the xda runs a different version.
If anybody could tell me where to start i would be very grateful.
Many Thanks
Richie
Check if you have an XDA II, aka Himalya or XDA IIi ala Alpine
Start - Settings - Device Info - Identity
PH10B - Himalaya
PH10C - Alpine
If it's a Himalaya you can upgrade it to WM6.1 or WM6.5. If an Alpine then you are stuck on WM2003.
As for SatNav TomTom 6.5 does install on a WM6.5 Himalaya, just, but i have been unable to test it due to not having a bluetooth GPS.
Thanks so much for a quick reply
Its PH10B so Himalaya
It seems to be windows 4.20.0 so quite far behind I'm guessing
Excellent
I assume I need to be connected to my PC to upgrade, the cradle/usb lead that came with it is not being recognised in XP on my machine.
Is there some drivers I need to download?
Have you installed Active Sync? Very easy to download from Microsoft.
For an updated ROM check the Himalaya section of this forum, there are many to choose from.
I have a Himalaya but it is purely for test purposes, my primary PPC is a Trinity.
Thanks, Active Sync installd, so simple when you know how.
USB now working
Are the ROMS the operating system(windows 6.5 etc)?
Ive now gone to the Himalaya thread.
I see my questions are already answered there
many Thanks
once you have worked out which device you have and can look in the right section most things have been answered already.
i seem to recall that when i installed TomTom 6.5 on my Himalaya it had to go on first and then i had to remove all the voices bar the one i wanted to ahve any space left for anything else. never actually used it as i don't have a BT GPS receiver.
Before i start to do anything could i just check something.
the three main things i would like to do are:
Upgrade the OS to the latest but more importantly most stable version
unlock the sim from 02 only
and add a decent satnav program.
What would be correct order to do this, obviously satnav last.
But does the os need to be done before the sim unlock?
Thinking back to my early days with the Himalaya, i unlocked it and then upgraded it.
Check out All in one SIM unlock to remove the SIM lock. I had success with the early version an one Himalaya and two work Alpines.
The upgrade will totally wipe the device so anthing that is installed will get deleted.
I tried the sim unlock tool but i get a 'does not know what program to open it' message did i miss something?
I flashed the rom ok to a few different versions, I'm going to try the one in your signature ather 6.1
I also tried lastest version of tomtom but it when it came to install it said not enough room? I tried installing an older version of tomtom and it worked fine.
Any tips on that?
I was using a 2gb card?
Can't remember much about the SIM unlock tool, only thing springing to mind is to check that are trying to run it direct on your PDA?
Only ever tried TomTom v6.5. Think the issue is that by default it installs all the foreign voices into System Storage, which once you get it installed and running you can delete and recover space.
Can't say as i use my Himalaya for much these days as i have Trinity.
After a few days of constant trying you get the hang of it in the end.
Thanks so much for the replys. Ive never used a pda before and to start using one thats 10 years old is a bit stupid. However i now have the latest version of tomtom all up and running in time for my london to turkey drive on monday.
I do have an iphone but not much good when there is no 3g to download the maps
Still didnt get the unlock tool to work but i shall keep trying.
Nothing stupid in using a Himalaya, especially as a satnav, the 3.5" screen is great for that.
It has also given you something to learn the basics on in case you take the jump to a WM phone.

A Bunch of Questions

Hi Guys,
I am new to this community, I just purchased an AT&T HTC Fuze (my first smartphone) and I would like some assistance in making it nicer than it already is. I have seen the results of flashing the EnergyRom from some of your guy's posts, but I do not want to risk making it a brick without addressing some questions.
Currently the OS on the phone is Windows Mobile 6.1, the Energy ROM is for 6.5, how do I upgrade from wm6.1 to wm6.5 or is there an Energy ROM for wm6.1?
More info on the phone: The bootloader (tri-color) screen shows the following
'Raph110'
SPL-1.95.0000
Micro-Raph (LED) v13
MicroP-Raph (KEY) v55
'Serial' on the white screen.
I read the thread 'Flashing your First GSM Raphael Rom (For Noobs)' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008, but I am skeptical to doing this now, because I haven't even found the EnergyROM for wm6.1.
Any contribution you can make in helping me set up my phone with the EnergyROM would be greatly appreciated.
Well before you do anything, you have to make sure you flash your device with "Hard SPL." If you read that guide, I'm sure you would've seen something about that.
And you can go to 6.5 from 6.1 without any problems. It doesn't matter what's on your device right now. Once you flash HardSPL you can flash whatever ROM you want.
That is very good information that you have given me.
One more question: How do I install the AddOns?, some that I want are found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536751.
Thank you!
when you download those "add-ons" you'll get a .CAB file. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable and place the .CAB file on the root of your Fuze. If you need clarification on that let me know.
Once you put the .CAB file on your device, using a file explorer program, find the file and click on it and it will install.
1 minor point you appear to not to have got yet (but you will when you start flashing!):
The windows version and the rom are linked. Each rom is built round a windows version & build and then tweaked by the chef. Its not like a pc where you install windows then put stuff on that, the rom is a custom made windows specific for your phone.
Welcome to the fourms & have fun flashing until you get the phone you want!
Root?
Yeah, some clarification on what you mean by 'place the file on root' would be helpful. When I download the AddOns they are .rar files and what I tried doing was just placing it in the Programs folder on the Fuze. It did some installation, but I did not get anything.
Root clarification then I guess?
Thanks for your patience.
Got It.
Okay I got it to work, I installed the AddOns that I wanted. It took a little bit of trial and error, but I got it.
Thanks anyway!
One more thing that I would like to do, but not sure where to get info or if its even possible.
I do not have a data subscription plan with my carrier, is it possible to install mapping information on the phone and have GPS capability without having to have a dataplan?
If this is possible then please let me know how to proceed or where I can get more information...
Thanks in Advance...
P.S. This forum is great.
hey sorry I didn't see your request for clarification, but I'm glad you finally got it working.
But as far as GPS without a data plan... As far as I know the only way to do that is if you use a program like Garmin or TomTom. However, if you choose to do, you'll have to actually purchase the map files for your specific location. The program itself should be available for free though.
GPS is free, the satellites are already up there and your phone has a receiver so thats the easy bit!
As kevindena said, you'll probably need to buy the map software (or maps) to show you what you want.
Google maps is free - but requires a live internet connection (wifi or 3g)
Tomtom is for road navigation - free software but maps are £££
Garmin (i believe) is similar to tomtom, as is Co-pilot
However, depending what it is you actually want the gps to give you...
There is atleast 1 aero-map piece of software out there (i dont know what, i dont fly)
In the UK i'm 95% sure you can buy the OS maps so you can hike/walk/cycle about the countryside.
There is almost certainly a marine map option to allow sailing & boating.
And on here somewhere (cant remember where it was) someone made a simple, fullscreen speedo running from the gps (free).
All the GPS does is tell you where you are, the software then overlays that on the map system of your choice.

[+++WARNING+++] CoPilot and HD2. [+++WARNING+++]

I hate to have to make such a thread, but ALK (the company that makes CoPilot) has informed me of something that they have neglected to mention to anyone purchasing CoPilot Live 8 for their HD2.
The HD2 specific version of CoPilot does NOT bring the map updates that CoPilot advertises
They mentioned that while they have come out with updates for their maps it's only for the REGULAR version of CoPilot. For now, the HD2 version (which I'm sure all HD2 users have purchased) does NOT come with this. So what does this mean? You would have to reinstall your CoPilot program as a normal GPS program. Meaning it would not function with NaviPanel and other HD2 specific software. They are not saying WHEN or even IF they will come out with the updates for the HD2 maps, but in my opinion it's not worth purchasing now until it's fully compatible.
In my own experience. I can't say I like it simply because the maps and searches that I've done (on Live Search for CoPilot) are WAAAAAY out of date. I was looking for a specific hospital when their "live search" gave me an address of where the hospital was almost 12 years ago. Not good and NO excuse for such lack of maintenance. I'll leave it up to people here to decide if they want to buy it or not.
Timely but a shame. I was about to buy this as I've got the UK Tmobile HD2 just this week and it hasn't got CoPilot on it at all. I thought I could get the HD2 version from ALK's website (I think I'd save a tenner) but now maybe I need to buy the full blown version. Are CoPilot's versions of maps easy to identify?
Well, I don´t use the Navipanel since it´s a pain ita to change the backcover everytime for the car-cradle, I´m better off with the Brodit-car-cradle.
I made some fuzz at ALK-Europe for the map-update (I bought the HD2-version in Dec. 2009) and they sent me the original Copilot8 cab for install on SDcard without charge. Now I run the regular version and have no update problem with the maps AND copilot doesn´t eat up my valuable Storage mem.
That's why I'm using the regular version of Copilot on my HD2.
And it works fine.
I indeed remember that when I tried Copilot special HD2 version (trial included in my original ROM) most of the maps were out of date and wrong.
I can't see any point is using the HD2 version, the regular is fine!
I bought cp 8 when It came out, before I even had a HD2, (but was using the test roms)
navipanel seems a gimmick to me, something that I tried once and never bothered with again.
Where are the maps located? In the Copilot folder, right ?
So why not download the regular Copilot version (2577 + Copilot) and then replace just the 2577 folder with the one dedicated to the HD2 (downloaded separately).
Just a suggestion. Could this possibly solve your problems?
@Phenomenon - can you tell me what version of Copilot you mean as a standard version? I'm using ver. 8.0.0.659 -
thanks
Where can I download the generic version of CoPilot? I'm hoping to free some memory, try out the newer maps and upload my tracks with CP Central. It's not that there's much difference between the 2 applications!

Mmm. It occurred to me too but I can't find it. I can download the HD2 version but not the generic. For the former I was sent a link to the full version and just have to enter my details and download the maps etc. that I bought. Getting the HD2 trial is easy too but I cannot find the other anywhere.
ALK have supplied the links to the generic version of CoPilot, together with instructions as to how to install both versions from scratch. They were very quick to reply. I still can't find a link on the website.
Does anyone who has tried the generic version know whether it is necessary to de-register the installed version before trying the device-independent application when re-installing to the same device?
iGO8 people, iGO8!!
I bought the CoPilot 8 Live for my Touch Pro and then changed to the HD2.
But, after I installed the regular CP8 I downloaded the HD2 update software "found link with google in UK" and installed, I have the HD2 version and I do get the map updates...
This does work fine as I've performed the same thing above several times while upgrading roms.
On another note, the website says you can't switch your license to Android from another OS ie: Windows Mobile.. but I'm going to try to deactivate my license on CP8 in Win Mob and reactivate in Android...who knows hopefully it will work...

I'm sure that the web site said it was alright to move between WM and Android when I bought CP8 some months ago. Moving to an iPhone was not possible. I'll see if I can find the page in my archive. I can't believe that I misread it. I think the text is ambiguous now but I'm fairly certain it has changed as well.
You might try contacting ALK and see what they have to say.

[Q] can someone help me get newer maps onto a cheap hacked gps?

Hi XDA guys!
A couple days ago I bought the maylong FD-220 "gps for dummies" gps at CVS pharmacy. The unit was deeply discounted ad I got it for $19.99 I knew it was a junk piece of hardware but I tried to go to the MFR website anyways to look for any map updates. No luck- the maps in the unit are from 2009 and they are NOT updating it- EVER. I guess the whole project completely tanked for them.
Anyways, I wanted new maps, and to eliminate using the ugly "for dummies" interface, so I figured I'd use MioPocket to hack my way in to a proper home screen, and install some windows CE 5.0 compatible gps software with newer maps etc.
I used MioPocket Mini 4.0 R2 and created a bootable sd card using the YFgo2CE.bld file trick to boot and complete the install. I was careful to use the Mini version because I ONLY wanted to do this to get more current maps and I don't care about using the device to do any other tricks whatsoever. Plus, I wanted to use whichever method was least likely to brick the device. I was successful and now I have a bootable sd card that loads MioPocket and the unit boots stock without sd card inserted.
Anyway, my question is this:
I know the unit was a el-cheapo Chinese piece of garbage, that's why it's discontinued now. I don't expect much but maps from 2009 with no updates is unacceptable. Does anyone know of any freeware, or even pay gps navigation programs that will run on windows ce 5.0 from an sd card? I just want newer maps- even if I use another discontinued program that at least had its last release in late 2010 or better etc.
I have done some web searching and have not been able to find a single tutorial or hack video etc which is written specifically for this model number. Just a few comments here and there.
Thanks to anyone who can help
Same problem..
I grabbed one at my CVS as well..
Looking for the same thing!
