satnav on old xda 2. is it possible - General Topics

HI all, Ive just been given an old XDA 2 (II). It seems to work ok.
What is the latest version of Windows that this can run and is there a tutorial on how to install it
Before I invest any time or money could somebody give me a pointer as to if I could run tom tom with this?
If so what do i need?
I have used a nokia 6680 with a bluetooth receiver running tomtom and this worked fine. I am assuming the xda runs a different version.
If anybody could tell me where to start i would be very grateful.
Many Thanks
Richie

Check if you have an XDA II, aka Himalya or XDA IIi ala Alpine
Start - Settings - Device Info - Identity
PH10B - Himalaya
PH10C - Alpine
If it's a Himalaya you can upgrade it to WM6.1 or WM6.5. If an Alpine then you are stuck on WM2003.
As for SatNav TomTom 6.5 does install on a WM6.5 Himalaya, just, but i have been unable to test it due to not having a bluetooth GPS.

Thanks so much for a quick reply
Its PH10B so Himalaya
It seems to be windows 4.20.0 so quite far behind I'm guessing
Excellent
I assume I need to be connected to my PC to upgrade, the cradle/usb lead that came with it is not being recognised in XP on my machine.
Is there some drivers I need to download?

Have you installed Active Sync? Very easy to download from Microsoft.
For an updated ROM check the Himalaya section of this forum, there are many to choose from.
I have a Himalaya but it is purely for test purposes, my primary PPC is a Trinity.

Thanks, Active Sync installd, so simple when you know how.
USB now working
Are the ROMS the operating system(windows 6.5 etc)?

Ive now gone to the Himalaya thread.
I see my questions are already answered there
many Thanks

once you have worked out which device you have and can look in the right section most things have been answered already.
i seem to recall that when i installed TomTom 6.5 on my Himalaya it had to go on first and then i had to remove all the voices bar the one i wanted to ahve any space left for anything else. never actually used it as i don't have a BT GPS receiver.

Before i start to do anything could i just check something.
the three main things i would like to do are:
Upgrade the OS to the latest but more importantly most stable version
unlock the sim from 02 only
and add a decent satnav program.
What would be correct order to do this, obviously satnav last.
But does the os need to be done before the sim unlock?

Thinking back to my early days with the Himalaya, i unlocked it and then upgraded it.
Check out All in one SIM unlock to remove the SIM lock. I had success with the early version an one Himalaya and two work Alpines.
The upgrade will totally wipe the device so anthing that is installed will get deleted.

I tried the sim unlock tool but i get a 'does not know what program to open it' message did i miss something?
I flashed the rom ok to a few different versions, I'm going to try the one in your signature ather 6.1
I also tried lastest version of tomtom but it when it came to install it said not enough room? I tried installing an older version of tomtom and it worked fine.
Any tips on that?
I was using a 2gb card?

Can't remember much about the SIM unlock tool, only thing springing to mind is to check that are trying to run it direct on your PDA?
Only ever tried TomTom v6.5. Think the issue is that by default it installs all the foreign voices into System Storage, which once you get it installed and running you can delete and recover space.
Can't say as i use my Himalaya for much these days as i have Trinity.

After a few days of constant trying you get the hang of it in the end.
Thanks so much for the replys. Ive never used a pda before and to start using one thats 10 years old is a bit stupid. However i now have the latest version of tomtom all up and running in time for my london to turkey drive on monday.
I do have an iphone but not much good when there is no 3g to download the maps
Still didnt get the unlock tool to work but i shall keep trying.

Nothing stupid in using a Himalaya, especially as a satnav, the 3.5" screen is great for that.
It has also given you something to learn the basics on in case you take the jump to a WM phone.

Argh! Warranty repair + Upgrade...

Hi all,
I sent my phone back to T-Mobile for a warranty repair because a couple of the keys stopped responding to key presses.
Got the phone back today repaired, they have replaced the keyboard. BUT they have also upgraded the firmware on the phone. Now it is WM6.1 and I am unable to restore my (a lot) applications etc from the 2gb backup file on my SD card.
It asks me for an upgrade file which I don't have. It performs the restore anyways but then the phone won't boot.
On performing a hard reset it comes back with WM6.1
I can't even cancel the damn T-Mobile customisations like I could in WM6 (by restarting the device before they install) now it just wipes the handheld again after boot and installs the T-Mobile crap again every time.
Please can someone help me restore my backup file? Where can I Get an upgrade file?
I found a guide here that I would have followed had I know they would upgrade my phone without my consent:
http://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=329
Is anyone here still on WM6 (not 6.1) able to create an upgrade file for me and host it somewhere?
I know it's a massive ask but I would be forever greatful if someone could help me out with this.
Many Thanks,
Alex.
If you dont want the 6.1 i would check the wiki/search for the 6.0 rom that you had before you sent it in. The older rom should be avaliable somewhere.. You just have to look for it.
I say you send it back to T-Mobile and ask for a G1 instead
I've spoken to T-Mobile to see if they could change it back and they said there is nothing they can do.
Is there some way to save my current rom to my SD card so that I can go back to 6.0, create an upgrade file for sprite, come back to 6.1 and restore my backup using the upgrade file?
I don't know where I can find the original T-Mobile Rom though I've looked on the web and the T-Mobile site.
Sorry I'll admit that I'm a noob at this.
DJ
Is the backup just to save you re-installing programs, or is there data in the backup that isn't backed up somewhere else?
The only thing I would really "lose" on my phone are the contacts which come right back as soon as I set the phone up to sync with exchange again. If I wasn't using exchange I would have all my contacts backed up in Outlook on my PC.
Maybe you just need to re-install your programs again. WM 6.1 does have some nice enhancements over WM 6.0.
Nothing they can do vs they can't be bothered

Complain to them about much longer GPS lock times (assuming you have the option of installing Tomtom or similar on your phone). I had this problem with the official HTC WM 6.1 upgrade (see this *Hopeless* GPS after 6.1 update thread for more info) and the HTC Service centre reverted the ROM back to 6.0 for free under warranty so if T-Mobile say they cant get the HTC Technical Centre to do this for you, they're not trying hard enough - time to escallate it to the manager! There's no physical reason why they cant revert the ROM and they should have warned you that they would flash the ROM.

I will lose a lot of data that is not backed up anywhere else. One of the main things is my TomTom favourites, which is full of locations I would have to drive to to save again, and can't drive to without the favourites lol. Other than that it's a lot of apps and customisations like numerous SPB apps that have been tailored to my requirements over the last year.

ffs I hope that's not going to be the case, I use TomTom 6 on my phone ALL the time and I'll be REALLY annoyed if it's not going to perform as well at that. It's the main reason I went for this phone.
I think I will ask for the manager. The pleb I spoke to did even go and ask someone if there was anything they could do.

GPS was a big drawcard for me also and the difference between HTCs official WM 6.1 vs WM 6.0 ROMs is like night and day (6.1 being night). Give it a test under your new OS just to see how it works with the T-Mobile ROM (I see there's a new 1.70xxxx series T-Mobile Radio - maybe yours has it now) but don't get your hopes up

Feel free to mention you know someone who had the ROM officially reverted for free under warranty. Remember, this is something that is possible to get done, I have personal experience of it.
As far as how to backup in the future, I backup all my Music, Videos and Tomtom Navigator 6.032 Maps and POIs etc on my microSDHC card using my Sandisk Cardreader and Windows XPs own backup utility. It's quick, free and works a treat! There's no need to use any special mobile phone backup software just for this sort of thing (although phone settings/configuration etc will require manual re-entering if you don't back them up - but then I'm unsure if it's possible to retain those across different OSs).
I tried to use my tomtom yesterday and it took ages to lock on despite having the quick gps downloaded.

Well then assuming you were out in the open and there's no reason why it shouldn't have got a quick lock (other than the 'up'grade), you know what to do!
For other T-Mobile customers and people considering using the radio in a non- T-Mobile Kaiser (not me!), it may be helpful if you post the ROM and Radio Versions you currently have.
ROM Version: 3.31.110.1 WWE
Radio Version: 1.70.18.02
Protocol Version: 25.83.40.02H
The sat nave seems better since that first lock, but I've only used it twice.
Is there a way to backup this ROM before I change back to do my upgrade file?
Cheers,
DJ

Repeat after me, this ROM is bad, this ROM needs to go, Old ROM is good, Old ROM is whats needed (for the meantime)!
Once you've got your SD Card contents back, then you can think about where to go from there and T-Mobile I'm sure will be only to pleased to supply you with the upgrade again or do it themselves.

shall i upgrade to 6.1

i have the xda orbit 2 on wm 6 with a lot of programs .ie,,copilot 7 ,spb .photos ,,will i lose these all ..i realey dont know what to do for the best shall i go for the 6.1 upgrade [from the o2 site] or what please advise

you will lose all of the data that is stored on the phone itself, what is stored on the memory card will not be erased.
As for the programs you will have to reinstall them and co pilot remember to deactivate this etc before upgrading all in the page when you download the rom from o2.
Also it is a rom update, from 6.0 to 6.1, the improvements are minimal apart from the speed improvements which should make it worth it for you to do if you want to spend the time reconfiguring it that is.
Hope that helps
You should NOT upgrade.
I did, and now I have only problems which I didn't have while on 6.0. You can find my posts in this forum.
On the other hand, if you have problems now, try upgrading.
But upgrade was, IMHO, my worst mistake.
yeh but the difference is that your upgrade is the htc leaked rom that appeared on here??? htc still havent realeased the full 6.1 upgrade for the polaris, if they have then it slipped by me.
The one the person is talking about is the o2 6.1 upgrade which i have been running for the last month and had no problems...yet but thats the same with anything it can always happen.

There are a couple of advantages to updating. You can easily google or wikipedia for details on how WM6.1 has changed. What's not mentioned is the compatibility you get with the newer HTC software. What I did was install the new rom, delete Opera 8.65, and install the Opera 9.5, the new HTC Album, new HTC Audio Manager, and new HTC Youtube app. Its like I have a new phone! But w/o many of the instabilities and bugs that cooked ROMS offer. Furthermore, it definitely cured my Xperia upgrade desires.
Worth noting is that yes, you will lose all information on the phone. So either move stuff to your storage card, or back it up on the PC. (Both of which you should be doing anyhow). Old text messages, and call history can be backed-up and recovered using the Sprite Backup that was included on your original CDs. In fact, I highly suggest making a complete backup using Sprite so that you can easily revert to your old ROM and restore your previous files/settings w/o any hassle if you have any issues with WM6.1.
Known Bugs for the official WM6.1:
-Touch scrolling doesn't work well in the Programs Folder accessed from HTC Home
-The music tab in HTC Home cannot be enabled by registry edits
Solution:
-Use either the Start Menu Programs folder or replace the Programs Folder with something like TouchLaunch
-Either don't use the Music Tab a la original configuration or install the latest copy of HTC Home by Schen w/o the brightness fix
I wish I had never upgraded to WM 6.1, with WM 6.0 my Orbit 2 worked perfectly well, never froze and Bluetooth worked with my Parrot hands free even to the point that the CoPilot voice came out of the speakers. Since upgrading I have experienced a number of freezes, the Bluetooth connects when it wants to and even when connected half the time it will not transfer a call, sometimes placing a call 5 minutes after it was dialled. I have been looking for an official O2 WM 6.0 ROM to downgrade to see if that cures the problems because I cant see any improvement in speed and most of the other "features" of 6.1 are of no real use, the threaded SMS being one I find most annoying.
@ chris10230
My signature says "Official" WWE ROM. Yea, from HTC site, when it went public! So no beta or leaked. You must have missed us yelling "New ROM is out". But that's no big deal.
@ Mace
Downgrading to WWE 6.0 did not solve same problems as your's that I (still) have. So I think we're stuck. Hopefully something will go seriously wrong with my Polaris, so I'll replace it while still under guarantee...
@ both of you, find more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411883. Please read posts from page 13... posts prior to that are just guessing or talking about problems with download/validation of device serial number...

Although it is a little offtopic here, you can disable the threade SMS. I couldn't stand it, but fortunately there is a solution to disable it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376770
I had upgraded to 6.1 official and also various cooked. but nothing beats 6.0 - I have 62MB free memory even after installing all my required prog's have even got SPB shell and Greatbal's manila theme - best of all world's
Am now on Panosha's Butterfly and enjoying the peace, tranquility
6.1 - give's you memory leak's, battery drain and most important eats most of the available memory due to all the new features like M2D, M3d, 3d Drivers etc...
Now if only I could figure out if Manila is installable on v6 then I have everything I need !

Newwbie questions

Hello,
I have just purchased a second hand spv c600 and have been playing about for a few days with it but now have a few questions.
Upgrading - I have WM5 (5.1.195) installed is it worth updating to WM6 ? What benefits are there and what can i expect to stop working, will the same apps and games work for both versions? Also i have only temporary installed windows so i could unlock the device so will it play any better or worse in linux after upgrade?
What to search for - What should i search for when looking for games and apps etc that will work with this device? Should i search spv c600 tornado or wm5 etc
Unlocking - I am not able to run regedit (or the regeditSTG2) but i have been able to install and run other apps like doom and tomtom. Do i need to worry about not being able to use regedit?
SimCity - Is there a version that will work with this device i have found simcity 2000 but it doesnt install.
SatNav - Which is best? I live in the UK so which runs best and which has most uptodate uk maps etc.
I am sure there are more but i cant think now.
Thanks to anyone who can help with any of these questions
Sav
1) Upgrading - I have WM5 (5.1.195) installed is it worth updating to WM6 ?
yes it is, WM6 works faster than WM5
2) What to search for .....
search for wm5
3) Unlocking...
Not sure what was the problem, but if you need to edit registry, install total commander, it can edit registry.
cant help you with other two.
Thank you for the reply
I was just looking at all the roms and decided to give it ago, could you recommend any?
Sav
I personally have tried only two:
by Nitrogenious
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365023
and, the one I am currently using
by Kamikadze
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455950
note that Kamikadze's ROM is intented for touchscreen devices. I own qtek 8310, which does not have a touchscreen, but I have installed additional software (spb shell) which has made using this OS very easy. One thing is for sure, there is no other OS that looks better than this one. Maybe you should try first some of the regular WM6 OSs, and then after you get familiar with them, try kamikadze's to see if you will like it.
Well i decided to give it Nitrogenious ago and i didn't half make me panic when the phone rebooted to the bootloader after the format binfs and then wouldn't sync and the update wouldn't work. Luckily I just needed to change usb ports should be done any minute now.
Thanks again
Sav

A Bunch of Questions

Hi Guys,
I am new to this community, I just purchased an AT&T HTC Fuze (my first smartphone) and I would like some assistance in making it nicer than it already is. I have seen the results of flashing the EnergyRom from some of your guy's posts, but I do not want to risk making it a brick without addressing some questions.
Currently the OS on the phone is Windows Mobile 6.1, the Energy ROM is for 6.5, how do I upgrade from wm6.1 to wm6.5 or is there an Energy ROM for wm6.1?
More info on the phone: The bootloader (tri-color) screen shows the following
'Raph110'
SPL-1.95.0000
Micro-Raph (LED) v13
MicroP-Raph (KEY) v55
'Serial' on the white screen.
I read the thread 'Flashing your First GSM Raphael Rom (For Noobs)' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008, but I am skeptical to doing this now, because I haven't even found the EnergyROM for wm6.1.
Any contribution you can make in helping me set up my phone with the EnergyROM would be greatly appreciated.
Well before you do anything, you have to make sure you flash your device with "Hard SPL." If you read that guide, I'm sure you would've seen something about that.
And you can go to 6.5 from 6.1 without any problems. It doesn't matter what's on your device right now. Once you flash HardSPL you can flash whatever ROM you want.
That is very good information that you have given me.
One more question: How do I install the AddOns?, some that I want are found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536751.
Thank you!
when you download those "add-ons" you'll get a .CAB file. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable and place the .CAB file on the root of your Fuze. If you need clarification on that let me know.
Once you put the .CAB file on your device, using a file explorer program, find the file and click on it and it will install.
1 minor point you appear to not to have got yet (but you will when you start flashing!):
The windows version and the rom are linked. Each rom is built round a windows version & build and then tweaked by the chef. Its not like a pc where you install windows then put stuff on that, the rom is a custom made windows specific for your phone.
Welcome to the fourms & have fun flashing until you get the phone you want!
Root?
Yeah, some clarification on what you mean by 'place the file on root' would be helpful. When I download the AddOns they are .rar files and what I tried doing was just placing it in the Programs folder on the Fuze. It did some installation, but I did not get anything.
Root clarification then I guess?
Thanks for your patience.
Got It.
Okay I got it to work, I installed the AddOns that I wanted. It took a little bit of trial and error, but I got it.
Thanks anyway!
One more thing that I would like to do, but not sure where to get info or if its even possible.
I do not have a data subscription plan with my carrier, is it possible to install mapping information on the phone and have GPS capability without having to have a dataplan?
If this is possible then please let me know how to proceed or where I can get more information...
Thanks in Advance...
P.S. This forum is great.
hey sorry I didn't see your request for clarification, but I'm glad you finally got it working.
But as far as GPS without a data plan... As far as I know the only way to do that is if you use a program like Garmin or TomTom. However, if you choose to do, you'll have to actually purchase the map files for your specific location. The program itself should be available for free though.
GPS is free, the satellites are already up there and your phone has a receiver so thats the easy bit!
As kevindena said, you'll probably need to buy the map software (or maps) to show you what you want.
Google maps is free - but requires a live internet connection (wifi or 3g)
Tomtom is for road navigation - free software but maps are £££
Garmin (i believe) is similar to tomtom, as is Co-pilot
However, depending what it is you actually want the gps to give you...
There is atleast 1 aero-map piece of software out there (i dont know what, i dont fly)
In the UK i'm 95% sure you can buy the OS maps so you can hike/walk/cycle about the countryside.
There is almost certainly a marine map option to allow sailing & boating.
And on here somewhere (cant remember where it was) someone made a simple, fullscreen speedo running from the gps (free).
All the GPS does is tell you where you are, the software then overlays that on the map system of your choice.

Polaris - GPS unit missing !?

Hello !
I have a Polaris/TC with TomTom7 installed. It has worked fine but
suddenly when I try to use TomTom I got the message "GPS-unit missing"
I have downloaded "quick_GPS" several times, done soft reset, checked that
internal antenna is used in TT etc. but no luck !
Please help me with some ideas for toubleshooting, I realy liked my TomTom !
/Staffan
Hm, could be hardware error... or, hopefully, borked COM settings in TomTom.
So first try COM settings (check what settings TomTom requires).
Then try some other NAV software (any would be good, even freeware - there's a lot of them. Google Maps might do).
Then you might try pain-in-the-ass option of hard reset.
If after that it's not working, then only repair remains...
Thanks for answer my question.....
Im always in a hurry, so I uppdated my TC to wm 6.1 and after that
TomTom decided to work again ! (don´t ask me why)
BUT ! as an old guy (56) its not so easy to remember every thing, I forgot to
backup my phone...and my numbers to the sim-card
So I have had a nice evening recover all phone-numbers.....
I have another issue, I have eraesed the standard TomTom from
TC and installed a better one.
Now I how to get the shortcut for TT on the start/main screen ??
Ah... I'm not much younger (49), but as IT manager I ALWAYS do backup...
You have not erased TT (uninstalled, temporary... since it's part of official ROM. So it's gone untill next hard reset).
I use standard HTC Home plugin, so I added my GPS software (iGO) as one of the shortcuts on tab 3.
However, you can use Windows Commander Mobile to easily put shortcut to anything practically anywhere.
Or you can simply select TT and add it to Start menu instead of something else...
If I may ask, where did you get you version of WM 6.1 (HTC, XDA-Devs etc)? If XDA, which particular one of the various "cooked" (I think thats the term..) ROMs. I have been looking at upgrading recently and would value your opinon on the version you are using..
Cheers,
IJ
My WM 6.1 is from HTC site.
Since my device was never SIM-locked, I was able to upgrade existing 6.0 to 6.1.
I have heard that most SIM-locked devices were not allowed to upgrade from HTC site.
Have not yet tried cooked ROMs...
My opinion of upgrading to 6.1 is stated somewhere on this forum... just search for my posts...
