Ram Hack or Graphics - G1 Android Development

I think it's time for the people to decide and make it easier for the devs. Do the majority want the ram hack or are there more gamers ^^

No ram hack. I want an great overall device.

should be in general section

Can't stand having an game lag, makes my device feel worthless

Well when I thought there were no such thing as stupid questions, you changed my mind lol.

i thought about that. but i think it's quite useful for the devs if the community decides to rather want non ramhack than with or the other way around. if im wrong a mod can move that. ^^

I like the fact I've got my g1 with 50mb of free memory available but it does get boring when I can't play games like Radiant, I posted earlier asking if their could be a toggle between the two, but it looks like a pain.

I have a pc, an xbox 360, a wii, nintendo dsi and a laptop.
I also have Snesoid, Gensoid & gameboid on my phone.
Who gives a crap about blocky choppy finished in 10 minuted 3d games on there phone?
Give me speed and fluidity over playing second rate 3d games on my G1 any day. If you really wanted a device to play pretty 3d games go buy an iphone or something as it does it so much better than android.
I also bet all the above most the users wanting to play 3d games are under the age of 18!

No Ram Hack. IMO, running a swap bigger than 32MB will not flush your apps out of memory.

Yeah if there was a rom where we could toggle through the ram hack it'd be useful. An app like SetCPU.

im almost 19 xD
and btw there are some ppl who want to kill time during work or train or whatever. also the kill of gpu memory doesnt only affect the games. apps like the new music player of felipe abrantes(?) need some gpu power for his cube to switch through the album covers. i suppose launcher2.apk would also rum smoother without ram hack (i know that is only for eclair and we have no drivers there )

App idea
@ Devs
Is it not possible to make an app that has the RamHack and NonRamHack boot.img. Then it pushes the appropriate one when you select it and reboots.
Just a thought.

NO RAM HACK coz it makes no BIG difference, only makes the device unstable.
Thanks for the poll anyway

Dude it doesn't really matter anyways. In the end the option to do the 10mb Ram Hack is the decision of the Cook.
Both having and not having the 10mb both have their benefits and their let downs. That's why a lot of cooks are starting to make ROM's with and without the hack.
So basically, in 4 words, this thread is pointless. There are gunna be people that like the Ram Hack and there are people that don't.
Sorry if I come off rude, it's my nature even though I don't want to be.

No, you actually put it politely in my view =). This is a good point, as most devs are putting up non-ram hacks for their roms and kernels.

I agree with what this guy said^^. Well done. Bravo. Cheers. Round of applause, and Amen
So you people wanna play games huh? You gotta be kidding me. Games over speed? Never. Do yourself a favor and un-root yourself.

Well, I'm developping an opengl application that suffers from the 10mb hack : things are really slow with it.
However, the overall phone is far much responsive with this 10mb hack.
So if there was a way to easily de/activate it, that would be really great. But I assume that's hard to do (if ever possible) because as of now, nobody did it.
But then I had another idea : would it be possible to keep, say, 2Mb in gpu0 (or gpu1, can't remember where this hack takes memory) instead of freeing it all ? This way, there would still be 2mb for textures (which should be large enough for many 3d apps), giving us the best of both worlds.
I don't really know if this is possible (I need to install a linux+toolchain to compile the kernel, but not enough spare time for now), but that might be an interesting thing to test.
Oh, almost forgot : if anybody decides to give it a try, I'd like to call it "the 8mb ram hack"

There are so many games on the Market that you can play that are fun, classic, and entertaining that do not heavily require the GPU
Few Examples:
Bonsai Blast
Space War
PacMan
ProjectINF
Light Racer
So It's not like its really all that bad having the 10mb Ram Hack. Its such a minute sacrifice. Besides there are a lot more 2d games then 3d so yeah....You really aren't sacrificing much.

Ramhack is no longer necessary as Roms are so frickin fast... I have a class 6 sd swap. thats fast enough for me!
Plus I'm addicted to speedX3d

Request: Best Game(s) that take the most advantage of HD2 hardware...?

I will be getting an HD2 tomorrow (hopefully) and have been doing research about alot of different things for it... one thing is games - I have seen alot of games and none of them seem to be using the specs of the HD2 very well.... I would expect a phone like this to be able to have some very nice games, I understand it is quite new and maybe there aren't any out yet...but could you please let me know what is out there so far? I have only seen things like xtkart (I believe that is how it is spelled) and the ps1 emulator... so I was wondering what you guys have or what else is out there that is in accordance with my recommendation ?
Thanks in advance!
XTRAKT, Experiment 13 and Electopia demo are by far the best games for hd2! avatar, asphalt 4 and nfs undercover are great too!
man.. its just that i'm not interested in racing games...
i wouldn't mind some good ol tetris.. but with nice visuals that take advantage of the hd2 specs...

Shooting Game
Dear all smart guys,
I am also wondering whether we can have those shooting game.. displaying in gameloft.com..............and which can be played in our super machine HD2...
games for HD2
Search for freewarepoketpc, and look for experiment 13
Ferrari GT2 Revolution looks BOMB on HD2. MiniGolf Wacky World looks also nice
the ferrari game runs 'terribly' on the US HD2.....they should be embarrassed....constant lag and slowdown. :O(
so basically to answer your question... there are none....... yet... don't lose hope... things will turn as soon as 7 comes out
yeah im not sure there are any games that fully take advantage of the hd2 hardware.
thats not to say that there arent any good games because there are PLENTY!

On my German HD2 with stock ROM it works brilliantly without any freezes etc.
@ Topic: You have to keep in mind that it is a Windows Phone. If you wanna have a phone for playing only then you have to buy an iPhone or sth. like that. Nevertheless I got more than 20 brilliant HD2 games that brought me hours of fun during long train trips.
wow, i wonder why the one on the us hd2 runs so poorly.........it stutters sooooo badly that it's barely playable......i didn't buy this phone to play games but since they were included i certainly checked them out, that's why i'm so shocked that they included a game that runs like crap, lol, not a good advertisement!
the graphics suck on that game too, not up to the HD2 par in my opinion...the game market for this phone is disappointing! =\..
By the time Windows 7 comes out you said ? Yeah, but the HD2 would still be stuck on windows 6, remember ?....I wonder if the games will be comaptible though? or If someone will come up with a perfected windows 7 rom for the HD2 ? Or at least a perfected android rom... then maybe we will have some decent games ? Otherwise I hope the developers are working on some great games otherwise the hardware will be going to waste for the most part...
I would take a look over at pda4you.org, if i was you guys..

Where are the games?

So I've had my phone for a couple weeks now, I was hearing all this buzz about how awesome Android is now and how far it's come so I just took the plunge. The phone has been fun to use and explore as far as widgets are concerned etc... but if I would ever make this my full time device it would have to do everything that my other phone (iPhone4) does. This brings me to the games... so far on the market all I've seen are pretty shoddy looking atari or nintendo looking games, where are all the graphically intensive and/or beautifully designed games in the market? How do I find games that actually take advantage of the GPU in my phone (Galaxy S)?
Gameloft has bunch of 3D games like Avatar and Assiasin's Creed for Android on their website, I can't post links so just google it or go to Gameloft.com and go to their Android section.
Also, emulators

Why don't you go buy a dumb flip phone and supplement it with a PDA? Oh, maybe because you want one device to do multiple things? Imagine that. With phones like the Epic out, phones are starting to pack some pretty nice GPUs - you shouldn't dismiss gaming just like that.
To the OP: Check out Gameloft's stuff like someone else mentioned, they really are top of the line, but they refused to list their games in the marketplace. SNESoid, NESoid can run SNES/NES games. There's also some decent paid games in the Marketplace, you can usually find a demo or Lite version to try. With more people flocking to Android, more developers will start creating fleshed out games other than Bejweled clones (hopefully).

I wonder why people say garbage like oh get a PSP if you want to play games, Or if you want to use a navigation system get a gps, etc. I for one buy a device so I can do it all with one device. Or else I wouldn't buy it. End of point.
oh if you want a phone buy a land line phone instead it works better??? Logical I think not!

Except Gameloft that begins to bring its Iphone hits to Android, there are few 3D games on our favorite platform.
Few days ago, I played Asphalt 5, that's not a bad game, because Gameloft proposed some free demo versions on its website (not avalaible n the market)
You can also try some good games you can find on the market like Speed forge 3D or Replica Island (not in 3D but a very good game).
At least you can try emulators (gensoid, gameboid...)

Best tool for the job is the simple summary. I for one am glad that the entire market isn't dominated by games.. With all of the porn and sound boards there wouldn't be any actual useful apps left.

[NEWS]Nintendo DS on Android

I couldn't help posting this because i became happy when i read it...
Tiger Lab apps(nds demo emulator)
[Only open for limited days]
1. VERY EARLY PROTOTYPE VERSION(BETA) FOR DEMO ONLY
2. It is very very slow so you shall not expect to play NDS game with this emulator.
3. It is used to DEMO that NDS game can be played on android phone
It is shown that NDS WILL be played some days on android phone, maybe 2012 or later
WHAT IS NEXT WORK (Huge efforts)
1. More powerful phones
2. Dynarec CPU simulation
3. GPU simualtion improvement for speed greatly.
4. Hareware render (eg, OpenGL ES)
5. FPU. Since NDS need lots of float calculation. FPU can improvement performance greatly. Later ARM will have FPU in feature
If you do not have a high-end phone, do not try NDS game. Even if you have a high-end phone, just try some small games(none 3D) but it is also quite slow.
How to demo (not play) NDS game
1. Put your nds ROM files to /roms/nds folder in sdcard.
Note. zip nds rom is not supported, you shall extract them to be *.nds files
2. Launch TigerNDS which will load those NDS roms in game list
3. Select one game and play
It is just DEMO and speed is very very very very slow even on high-end phones. You shall not expect to play nds game with the emulator.

Good job devs! Keep it up!

Might work well for the Kyocera Echo
This looks promising!
I know it's just a proof of concept currently, but why are they saying it would need new devices to run well? It seems like, since the DS and our devices are both ARM based, with some obvious modifications to run arm code natively and not emulated, you could get it running pretty well. At least that's what I had gathered from previous discussions about it.

In order to emulate a nintendo DS your phone needs to have twice the power. But to be honest I never thought the DS was too powerful... So I bet once the emulator is out of alpha it should run fine on a galaxy S. But who knows were still waiting for Zodttd to finish the N64 emulator
Wow! This would be awesome!! I miss Mario Bros on my phone
I tried on HD2, and yes is very very very slow, but it works.

Of course, I am familiar with emulators and how, as a rule of thumb, your device should be 10 times more powerful to expect any sort of decent emulation. I'm just saying, maybe they can avoid emulating certain things and run native ARM DS code natively, vastly speeding it up. It would be REALLY hard though, requiring vast knowledge of ARM assembly from what I've heard. Meh, Zodttd. He should stick to iPhone imo. Android will probably get some decent open source emulators soon enough.

decent emulation takes about 5-10 times the power to emulate
and ive heard that emulating the DS is extremely difficult
as for zod i honestly doubt he is still working on that project paul seems to be the one that is on top of the project now
I'll try it out with my Atrix tonight, maybe post a youtube video. Is there a standard game we are using?
I've been trying to run a .nds file on this. The ROM is Pokemon Platinum (128mb). It's on /roms/nds and shows up in the app, however when I click on it it flashes to a black screen then goes back to the rom selection screen.

LOL!!!! That's hilarious! But that might be true too.
Sighh..
I remember the time when psp can emulate ds rom even though the frame rate per second was really low! (Average 17fps!)
I stopped using handhelds after the Gameboy Advance.. besides, it feels like all these games are the same rehash with little story change and somewhat better graphics.. there doesn't seem to be any new creative things being done in the handheld market.. so I say why bother killing your phone trying to emulate the NDS..
with that in mind, we are looking at quad-core phones by the end of 2012 for SURE, and dual-core by fall 2011 I hope, so just wait a few more months haha.
my bigger concern about emulation and games on the Android is multitouch.. even my Desire on 2.3.3 (CM7) has issues where multitouch fails, rendering even most old games unplayable (how the hell can I run and jump in Mario at the same time like the real gamepad allows.. if we wanna improve the quality of gameplay on our phones, we should push the manufacturers for better hardware that'll allow coders to provide for better multitouch capability.
just my 2 cents..
I wouldn't worry about that, bluetooth gamepads are on the way.
I use a Wiimote with classic controller for emulators at the moment.
NDS emulation can be slow even on PC, so don't expect phones to run games playable
alienhunt: more like spring 2011 for dual core.
i'll be getting a tegra2 phone in the mail next week.

Can somebody make better explanation? How high end should devices be? Would current devices (Desire, Galaxy S) be enough or do we need to wait for dual core?
Bluetooth gamepads are nice, but i think they are more like "i can do that" than really being usable. Games on the phones are meant to be played anywhere. And i don't want to carry a wiimote around with me just to play games on my phone.
I have tried several emulators on my HD2 and games are quite playable despite HD2's limit of maximum 2 touch points. Biggest problem is the feedback of the controls. You cannot feel controls, which means you can easily miss it.
I think best on screen controls would be ones that are fully customizable. Ability to move and resize controls to match your device, finger size and playing position would be killer feature.

Emulation on the G2X

Wow this phone is fast! N64 and PS1 at full fps with sound! Almost kind of boring when you don't have to tweak a ton of settings just to make the roms playable
I've been into emulation on every device I've owned, so its how I benchmark the relative performance from one device to the next. Coming from a N900, this G2X blows it out of the water. My N900 could play SNES at full fps but turning the sound on would slow it down. The N900 could play N64 and PS1 but they were really slow at ~10fps skipping at least two or three frames without sound.
So N64 and PS1 emulators were the best I had to throw a the phone and it handles it no problem. I'd like to see what the phone can really do. Its starting to feel like this phone might be pretty close to my laptop (older 2Ghz C2D) in emulation performance; blows my mind to even think that. Is there a PS2 emulator anywhere? I read a rumor that said Nvidia might put out a PS2 emulator but I wasn't sure how true that was. I'm assuming if Nvidia puts the emulator out then it would be optimized for Tegra2 and actually use both CPU cores and the graphics chip so the games might actually run OK-ish.
If not, what is everyone else using to push the phone? I don't really care about quadrant benchmarks or anything like that.
Oh BTW, this is my first Android device so excuse the noobness of me not knowing what software exists

haha yeah its my first I've been reading about Android since it was announced and I've played with different versions on emulators and I actually had my N900 dual booting Froyo, but this is my first actual Android device. I'm a little bit of a software nerd so I like trying out different OS's. Meego, Maemo, WebOS, Palm, WinMo CE 6 and 5, Android 1.5-2.3; I've spent some time with all of them. I even lurked for a while before my join date. Not too much of a noob in general, just with the world of 3rd party software for Android.
So anyway, back on topic. Does a PS2 emulator exist for Android? What's everyone running to test out their new G2X?

As a general rule it takes around 4 or 5 times the processing power to correctly emulate a system (give or take). The PS2 has a 128bit processor running at 300MHz with multiple coprocessors. I think we are getting close but not quite there.
Yeah I realize the G2x won't run PS2 perfectly, especially if its run completely off the CPU it might not run at all. That's why I was hoping there was more to the Nvidia PS2 emulator rumor...
Oh well, it's not like I wont have fun playing with N64 and PS1, its just too easy.
Just like older phones with SNES and other emulators, you have frame skipping and stuff to help the frame rate.
I think the PS2 is overkill but whatever.
I just think its funny that Sony is coming out with a new PSP Android phone to run PS1 games that we can already do for free using our own backups.

Overkill is the whole point. What software are you using to push your G2X?
I agree with that last part, it is pretty funny. It seems like a pretty cool phone though, I just don't buy sony.

Wow this phone is fast! N64 and PS1 at full fps with sound! Almost kind of boring when you don't have to tweak a ton of settings just to make the roms playable

What are you using for controls when playing the N64 games?
What emulators is everyone using for the G2x with success?
I have DLed a few but lost all my roms with my HDD so haven't tried them out yet.
I couldn't get PS1 emulation working with my own backups or others

I've only tried N64oid and FPse, both work really well for me so far. I'm just using the onscreen controls right now. I tried to get the accelerometer working for the left dpad/stick but I still have some tweaking to do to get it the way I like it. Still, the accelerometer doesn't feel natural with these games, they weren't really designed to be controlled that way.
Id like to get one of those iControlpads, its bluetooth so it should work. It's just kinda of pricy so I'll wait to hear of other people using it with a G2X first.
speaking of slide out gamepads, I'm surprised something like This hast come out yet. It would be perfect for me.
Yea i like the IcontrolPad as well, but like you said its a bit expensive.
If you don't mind not being able to hold the phone this one is great
http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Retro-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo/dp/B001ULJGDU
Its the Wii retro controller with bluetooth built in, no nunchuck needed. People have used it with Blueputdroid.
I figure I can just plug the Micro HDMI into the TV and USB for power with this controller and have portable classic gaming
Nice! If anyone gets that bluetooth remote working let me know please...I would love to use some emulators using hdmi and the BT controller!
I dont have any on my phone yet cause I really dont like playing on the touchscreen...but with the controller would be sweet!

so far until someone works on the drivers or the bluputdroid dev supports the phone its not going to happen on a stock G2x rom. Ive seen it does work on CM7 roms however I haven't tried myself.
I'm half tempted to try a nightly but i like having a stable phone.
my controller should be here any day so if HDMI out is working on CM7 I will probably give it a try
I currently use a one handed bluetooth gamepad. It works with Fpse, Psx4droid, N64oid, Gameboid, Snesoid and Gensoid. Plus i have the belt clip kickstand. I just sit back on the bus or train to work and play FF7, Super Smash Brothers, Tekken Advanced, Killer Instinct and of course Sonic.

I was wondering where those were in stock. the one handed control would be weird for a while i bet

Just ordered one of those from Ebay...shipping from Europe though...and the wait is killing me. I thought it looked iffy at first. Glad to hear you've had good results with it. Not a lot of inputs...but I guess four buttons and a directional is enough for most anything.

Go to the android market and download them.
You should be able to find all but the n64, emulator which should be re released soon.

3DS Running Android 4.0

this is only an idea, i get bored and start thinking about weird but cool things mixed toguether maybe you guys can make similar things that you would love to have, just download your favorite stuff mix them on photoshop, try them itll be fun
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
That would be crazy.
It would be awesome to have that, but hacks for the 3DS are more likely(non atm)

3ds and ds. Have pointless processors. Might get a donut from running on them but not ics.
Trade it in and get something the Samsung galaxy media thing.

This would be any better than the cheapest of android phones.

I feel it important to point out (despite having exactly the opposite feelings myself) that quite a lot of hardware huggers and geeks have an extremely strong emotional attachment to 'Nintardo' and all its 'cute products'. The emotional attachment is often so strong that it blinds, obscures and ultimately completely overrides normal levels of good sense and intelligence.
That would be cool to have, but once icons get to the top screen it would be near impossible to move them off it since its not touch sensitive.

I don't get how zenonia 4 can be free but Zelda on 3ds is over £20.
I have Mario mushroom tattoos but haven't had a Nintendo since then n64 and gameboy advance.
Weak hardware and tired games.

Wow just looked the dsi has a 133mhz processor. It can't run any form of android. No wonder the games as so weak.

Holy **** a bunch of people bashing proper console games while promoting rubbish mobile games?
Alrighty my impression of you guys have degraded. Seriously.
Why does zenonia 4 cost nothing while Zelda cost money? Quality of the game, of course. Zenonia is so horrible only anyone who have no taste in games would find it attractive, as with most casual mobile phone gamers because they simply haven't touched anything that's of good enough quality to set a decent benchmark of what's good and what's crap.
Processors does not determine the quality of the game and there's no denying it, DS and 3ds probably can't get android running but the games made for those consoles are far more entertaining then mobile games. I have no idea how Zelda is a "tired game" while zenonia is not.
Android 4.2 on my Tamagochi would be fun
16x16 b/w and 2 bottons FTW!

I agree with you to an extent but mobile gaming has progressed a lot over the past couple of years. The lack of hardware controls still doesn't sit well with me, though. I need physical buttons for games like platformers.

Yeah i completely agree, in fact IMHO Touch controls completely suck and are holding back smartphone gaming. For more of my whining about the inadequacies of touch controls

IMHO non of this prevents Nintardos products being jokes, suitable only for small children with overly protective parents .... lol ( my twins have DS's they are 6, already Mia prefers playing some games on my HTC Desire Z)
I agree

+1 on your comment I could not have said it better myself
Super bump I'm probably gonna get suspended or warned or something...
But I wanted to let you all know...
CyanogenMod 7 idled using 63mb of ram on my Samsung Galaxy Exhibit...
The 3DS has 128mb...
It also has a dual core and a pretty beefy GPU... So?
Maybe some SDCard ram? Can that be done on Android? 128mb of SD card ram... That's all we need...
Now let's say this could be run with the help of a flashcart...
Like the http://eng.supercard.sc/manual/dstwo/
Supercard DSTwo... It has I think.. 64mb of ram?It also has an integrated CPU.
Wouldn't that make the 3DS a tripple core of some sort? Wouldn't that help?
I think so.
The 3DS could probably run Android in the future.. I don't see it so farfetched.

its almost possible, everything on the 3ds has been dumped except for the bootrom. if the bootrom is dumped, we can put everything we want on a 3ds and it will run fine! (if the cpu, ram and other stuff like that are good enough)
edit: the bootrom has been dumped, BUT its not public.:crying::crying::crying:
Yo it's a NEW YEAR FOR ADVANCEMENTS

I'm just now reading over this forum you seem to be the closest one to actually work with on the 3DS. I have my bootrom dumped with boot9strap installed. I'm down with making a cfw that's equivelent to 3DS software and also has android apis or programming. It will be a challenge however considering the fact that you have minimal ram to work with and very low processing speed.
The 3DS sfw is very light but if you were to making it lighter and add a couple of software enhancements to it (Make it your own) you could potentially lessen the amount of ram the home screen takes up. The 3DS sfw makes it so the the home screen is always active in the backgroud, if I could cut that bit of ram free then the potential for running newer software would be greater. Also in a cfw there the potential that you can partition a proportionally larger SD card with virtual ram and speed up the processing a little more.
If you have anything that can help please reply to my post so I can remember this forum for the future. Hope my post helped:laugh:.
