How to speed up a Hero Rom - G1 Android Development

hi guys i just flashed my G1 wit the hero rom but it lags a lot and the applications don't load fast so how would i speed it up i have 2.1 firmware.

I assume you have King's or Eugene's Eclair hero/espresso?
If your comparing it to a Donut rom then thats why you might think its slow. Also having 200+ apps open if too much so you should get a task killer. If you dont have a swap partition then that might be adding to the slowness. The 2.1 hero from King is as fast as a donut so unless you have alot of widgets it should be fine.

Question in a development forum + Not enough research done + Ignorance of Search bar = Junior Member.
Whts done is done. So u cud flash one with a 10mb hack. Try a 1.5 sense, cuz the eclair has no gpu acceleration as of yet so perhaps thats why you are finding it slow. Use a taskmanager to frequently close running applications. overclock to the max using a market app such as overclock widget or setcpu.

Hero was not the rom if you wanted speed.... fail

hahaha speed? hero? hahahahahaha

okay everyone the best way to speed up any rom is to have a class 6 sd card it will run much faster after you get one check out my vid here is a link

Same processor and same RAM, why would a myTouch be any faster? I'll put my overclocked G1 up against a MT3G any day of the week.
That leads me to my next point about making a Hero ROM faster. I would definitely install SetCPU, overclock it, and decrease the CPU usage at which it will upscale it's speed. That dramatically increases performance.

But if you have thres hold too low it will scale when not needed. If battery life is a concern you want it to 50-65. If you have a 2600mah bat then go ahead and try 20-50.Dont make it 528 all the time either, use 128 while sleep and 128-528 while on charger or batt.

Yeah, absolutely. I have mine set to scale at 50%, and that seems to produce good results.

class 6 sd card, 96mb swap and MLIGN's.
Kingklicks is quite fast, but I dont think it is as fast as MLIGN's. Definitly not trying to say who is better or does more work. Hell, MLIGN only does the hero ROM and older firmware at that.

Wow
But It will drain battery and maybe explode after some time

Battery Life? Can't really say, as I have on demand setup, so far I've not seen it scale past 628Mhz on a cpu load....

Exciting to hear, and certainly more legitimate than the dumb 780mhz hoax.
Edit: LOL, Z҉A҉L҉G҉O̚̕̚'s picture is hilarious.
Don't be expecting much out of it.....
"increases application execution speed by up to three times"
That REALLY is NOT that hard to do. You will note that they do NOT say 3-times across the board! It means that they found at least ONE glitch somewhere where something was running slower than it had to, and in THAT CASE, it results in a speedup with a factor of 3. Note that this particular speedup might result in a SLOW DOWN somewhere else (if they are morons). Second, this "Myriad" doesn't make me feel at all warm or fuzzy -- it feels like proprietary locked-in type nonsense. You know, they kind where this group of douchebags is trying to take over the entire platform by intentionally introducing proprietary incompatibilities.

major performance boost or no, work like this is what makes Android great. This is the OHA at work to get the most out of every device and I, for one, am very pleased at this (pre-)announcement.

No it isn't. This is just some proprietary junk. If it were OHA at work, you'd see contributions being pushed back to the AOSP, which I guarantee you will NOT see here. All this is is a private fork of AOSP/dalvik that those douchebags are trying to SELL.
Myriad whosawhatsit is a founding member of the OHA, folks. I don't know what, precisely, this "Dalvik Turbo" is -- but I //do// know that Myriad was one of the companies involved in developing Dalvik itself. They specialize in virtual machine development.
I //suspect// that this is some special JIT process. But they then turn around and claim that the memory signature impact is low as well. So... who can say?
Sweet deal, buuuut.....
this should be interesting, it seems to me that we have an influx of tools, mods, scripts and hacks and no real new roms. I guess its in part due to the fact that too much is coming out too quick for it to all get implemented. We'll see how it goes.... Hopefully in the next couple weeks we'll see this and all the overclocking hacks integrated into some cool new roms.
So if the processor isn't REALLY being pushed to 780....why does the heat increase? And if lowered, it decreases in temperate. How about the actual increases in speed...I have x2 G1's, and have physically used SuperD 1.8 on both, one at normal 528, the other are 700. Simple actions like moving through the app drawer (that both have 150 apps), the 700 moves much quicker, and isn't choppier. I've been playing with all sorts of actions on the G1, such as the launcher scrolling, playing video, etc, and the one clocked at 700 out performs every single time.
So you're saying everything I just mentioned is in my head? I'm not saying its a monumental increase, but there is a clear difference.

No need to speculate about this as we will see one way or the other next week at MWC. Also guys lets not drag the OC debate into this thread as it's OT and there is enough flame in the thread dedicated for it.
I miss some facts for the "turbo vm".
it could be:

- jit compiler (longer startup times)
- jit + store the compiled code (seen on IBM mainframes)
- hot spot compiler (like the actual sun jvm)

I have read that the HTC Inspire has the same CPU as the Thunderbolt, if this is correct will the 1.8ghz overclock also work for the Thunderbolt? Anyone with some light on this situation?

We'll have to wait until we get custom kernels to do this. Each phone has a different kernel IIRC so you can't slap the Inspire OC on the Thunderbolt and rock on.
I'm sure we'll hit 1.8 if not 2.0. Just be patient.
I'm happy with 1G as is... but I could always use more speed.
According to Wikipedia:
Inspire uses the MSM8255 chip..
Thunderbolt uses the MSM8655.
They are both rated for 1ghz, but it could be that the MSM8655 is superior in other ways and might have a higher/safer overhead.. We might be able to get a 100% overclock or really dark close to it.

lol I was being sarcastic. I am well aware of the fact that you can get good battery life out of an overclocked phone. I came from the evo 4G where I had "god" mode enabled and got great battery life.
P.S. God mode on the evo ment overclocking to 1.2Ghz. Most phones couldn't go that high, so you had to enable "god" mode to try.

Good to know the phone doesn't disappoint.
I'm an inspire owner on an overclocked kernel. On 1800 my battery with normal use (tons of Facebook and xda app, email,~50 texts, and 10-15 2-5 min phone calls) gets ~20-24 hrs on a full charge. This was my best benchmark.

I tried that as well. My Quadrant score was similar but I found browser scrolling and gameplay in Angry Birds to be noticeably choppy. Also, in Quadrant, the orbiting planet test pegs at 60fps stock where with this kernel it was jumping around all over at lower fps. Ended up flashing a different stock clocked kernel and everything was good again.

I have a kernel that is 1.8ghz capable, but it will reset after a while. So far it seems that 1.4ghz is stable. If I go any higher, eventually it resets. I have the Liquid sense rom installed. Haven't tried any others to see if the kernels are more stable at higher clocks.
Edit: with this ROM at 1.8hgz I get a 2571 on quadrant. I think that's particularly good. Too bad it resets once in a while. Any one recommend a good kernel for stable overclock?

[Q] please post your quadrant score

I saw a store rep demo'ed it and got 2700, and the 3D got whopping 100+fps on "walking up room" part.
It is exceptional.

I ran the first quadrant within thirty minutes of getting the phone, and it scored 2554 or something like that.
Just ran one and scored... 2463
you have to realize this is the same chip as the XOOM and Atrix but its powering a lower resolution so the quadrant scores will be higher BUT you're at a lower resolution. I have a Xoom and it gets 1800 while this gets 2500. I'd rather have a higher resolution than a higher score. Still you shouldn't have any problems playing games on here.
Consecutive runs with no tweaking at all, background sync on and heavy live wallpaper running.

After scoring 1700 with my Legend with data2ext, I realized that Quadrant scores don't necessarily don't mean much. What I want to see is how much this phone scores in GLBenchmark.

I don't get your point. How does it mean nothing but also means it's fast? It's a benchmark test. The point of it is to gauge performance, nothing more. Would you have bought one if it scored 850? After all... its a meaningless number.

This is the G2X forum so I think we want scores from that phone only not the O2X.
Also, 3000 + with no tweaking? Really? Is this with stock rom? If not I belive a non stock rom constitutes tweaking.

It's the same hardware. The benchmarks will be the same except for any software quirks. Not sure about tweaking, I interpret that to mean "optimising for benchmarks". The only real alternative rom available is Paul's and all he's really done is turn the engineering code off, not really a tweak. Nevertheless, I expect the G2x won't be encumbered by these LG oversights (hope?) so should bench around 3000 out of the box.
The point I was making was perfectly relevant for this thread I think?

I don't think there's any problem with you adding the comparative benchmarks from the O2x to the discussion. However, I DO think you should have been very clear about what those benchmarks were from so people aren't wondering why their phone out of the box isn't performing as well as yours.
Also, I'm still not entirely clear from your response. Are you running a custom rom or not?

I'd hate for anyone to mmisinterpret, I'm running stock LG ROM with no engineering code. What I mean by that is that it's basic Google code but it *does* include the LG framework, so probably slower than stock Android.
Edit: It would be clear to even a casual observer from the screen shots that it was not stock Froyo.

I think it was the "no tweaks" part that was confusing. I'm also wondering if the G2x will suffer from the same engineering code issue that the O2x has. Originally I thought we would be getting AOSP, but apparently it's still LG manipulated, just without their launcher and probably a few other things.

Oh? That's quite interesting news to me, thanks. That's a bit of a bummer actually that its not ASOP, I was looking forward to that. Let's hope the cut is shallow and easy to clean.
I hear CM7 is running on x2x so this all may become moot?
Sorry, I didn't read further.. I see the answers here in the forum. Please ignore this post

Just curious, how did you get the black status bar at the top of your phone with the blue icons... Cause I want to do that with mine asap. Thanks

In this case you just need to take the png files from the European 2x framework-res.apk and use them to replace the equivalent in the US 2x. Always backup first. /offtopic

Can you do a bench on Nenamark? Curious to see what the FPS is on that test?

quadrant score
My quadrant score with pauls modaco rom is 3200+ which i am extremely happy with. on stock rom i was getting 26-2700.
>_<
O2x owners get the hell out of our forum! Your devices are programmed differently than ours, you've most likely tweaked your devices in some way (who comes to XDA and does not do so?), and you're confusing the situation.
Out of the box, the G2x from T-MOBILE USA scores about 2400-2500 on Quadrant. End of story.

Whats your Best Quadrant Scores? Lets Race!!

What you guys got... Run What you Brung!! Lets see Who Can Win. No Cheating!! I use Quadrant Advance as it shows all of your CPU, IO, 2D, 3D, memory. I Will set the bar HIGH. Lets Go!! 3865!! WHAT!!

really you are going to go there?
1) Quadrant Scores really do not mean anything. all about how the end user feels about the ROM.
2) i am currently running the 2.3.3 leaked MySense ROM. And when it comes to how smooth it is.. it's lightyears beyond how i felt about Cyanogen(mod) or EViL's HD ROM. It's snappy responsive and works EXTREMELY well. However the quadrant is much lower than Cyanogen or EViL's ROM.
3) any developer or anyone with any amount of time under their belt will tell you that Quadrant Scores do not mean jack crap when it comes to the real world. Once again it's all about how the end user likes his or her ROM, and how smooth it is. The only people who rely on Quadrant scores are people who surf Android Central and Android and Me.
Have fun running your Quadrants, i'm not telling you not to.
I'm not a self proclaimed "troll" but i am a "realist". If you want Trolls to stay out of your Threads. Do not post them on the internet....
My UI is very fast and Smooth... BTW I am not running what is in my signature. I didnt start the thread to be a debate, but to see what people are actually achieving in Quadrant. I have seen you in many other threads and I respect your opinion.

Thanks for participating. I tried using Photobucket to enlarge my pic, but to no evail. Any ideas?
I never got close to 3000, this is my best
ROM: CyanogenMod-7.0.2-glacier
Kernel: [email protected]#1 (or the kernel that was included with the ROM )
CPU Speed: 1516mhz
CPU Govenor: Performance
@vabeach454: After I uploaded to Photobucket, I copied the IMG code and pasted it, that's how I got my image to be this size.

Quadrantis a pretty horrible benchmark. It's notorious for being inaccurate and giving bloated scores if you wanted a more accurate reading you should use smartbench. It's probably the best out of all of them ceptit does bias a little toward Samsung phones.

I have no clue what to gauge the phone against everyone uses quadrant that I know and hardly anyone posts smartbench scores... but for what its worth.
I scored:
Productivity 1892
Games 1846
Is this good or bad...lol I have no clue.

I wanna know what you run to get a score like that.
My quadrant score is : 2235
on CM 7.0.2 with faux CFS low voltage kernel @ 1.2 ghz
What rom/settings are you using to get such high scores?
That's totally awesome

I am running a version of Ice Glacier/My Sence (EXT 2) with faux123's 0.9.9 BFS LV #137 Kernal With a LagFix. The ROM is NOT Ready for Release as I still have some work to do on it and probably will need some DEV help to do it. Any DEV's willing to help with it please PM me.
P.S. Not all Glaciers will run at these speeds, they will lock up. This is my forth HTC Glacier and it is built in China. My others were Taiwon Built and NONE of them could handle this. Fortunatly this Glacier has never locked up on me and can handle anything I can throw at it.
I have reached scores around 3600ish on Iced Glacier 1.1.6, 3200ish on CM7 and Evil's MIUI. Havent tried any of the Sense roms yet. Running stock MySense now and the scores come out pretty low, but its running really fast without any lag at all. OC at 1.8ghz smartass. Confuses me But here are some pics I just took

I get 1850 from a stock (out of the box) MT4G, so my guess is that the kernal didnt install. Your scores with faux123's kernal should be much higher.
I have not seen any Quadrant Scores that top mine yet. Not being cocky... Just waiting.
