Is there a software available that will allow me to connect my Android Device to my laptop as a GPS unit???
This would be SWEET!
Simply USB tether the N1, MT3G or G1 to your PC, run the program and viola!! - GPS on your PC...

Forgive me, but I don't see how this would be useful?!
I remember years ago I once bought Microsoft Streets & Trips with the bundled GPS unit that did what you are asking. But why would you want to carry around a laptop that's tethered to your Android device with GPS?!
-OR-
Are you talking about being able to SEE the maps/navigation ON your computer screen?!
maybe they have a laptop mount on the dash like cops do.. big ass navigation
Rather than purchase an external GPS unit to tether to a netbook... use the android device as one...
I already use the my MT3G as a mobile broadband device when on the road... This would just make it that much more useful.

I'm just wondering, is it possible to use a mini USB hard drive such as this one: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...1&cs=19&c=us&l=en&dgc=SS&cid=25682&lid=585550
to extend a phone's memory?
My guess is that it wouldn't work since the hard drive is bus powered. It would probably take some sort of special formatting. But has anyone ever tried this?
Your phone doesn't have USB hosting capabilities. It has to way to run another USB device. I don't think that is ever going to be planned into the development road map of PPCs and Win Mobile.
Also I just don't see why you would want to tether your phone to an external hard drive especially with 8gb+ mini/micro SDs coming to market and the ability to download your desired files from the internet or a VPN on the fly.
What you may see is Wifi and Bluetooth storage devices being wirelessly connected to your phone. It might even be possible now -- can anyone link up with a Zune to their phone via wifi?
some have like flame and Athena
think the main problem is that usb host mean one
have to substain a 500mA output current at 5volt which mean 2.5watt
that would suck a normal phone dry pretty fast

I guess that's a good point about an external hard drive not being needed. You could always run orb or a similar client which basically does the same as hooking up the hard drive. Well, thanks for clarifying anyway.
I'm fed up with the clunky way which bluetooth transfers files between my MS laptop and my HTC Touch Pro (and any other device it would seem).
I'm fed up with three or four attempts to get it to work in the first place, I'm fed up with having to approve every single data connection - I have after all paired the devices, please just transfer the files.
Does anyone know of a decent bit of software, either winmo or Windoze that will allow me to browse the other device, grab or send the files I want and just do it without all the fuss I seem to be getting?
Thanks in advance.
get wifi remote access. search for it.

I had it, but couldn't get it to work on an ad-hoc (peer to peer) connection, then it stopped working altogether.
Maybe I should try again...thanks.
maybe you should just get a usb card reader. or an adapter if your laptop has a card reader already.
I have a USB card reader, and leads to connect the phone to the computer, but this is the 21st century folks, and I have two devices that can connect without wires, but it's about as easy, and friendly as, well, something that isn't easy or friendly.
The phone should see the computer, and vice versa, and file transfer should be as easy as if they were the same device.

I have:
Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba
v7.00.08(T)
it's really clunky. (I might have said).
I'm trying to find an app that works with the Samsung Epic that I can use as a mouse/keyboard for my PC.
I have already downloaded GRemote Pro and Remote Droid but I can't get either to sync with my computer.
I can not get Microsoft Activesync to recongize my phone which I think might be the reason I can not get my phone connected to my computer so the programs acknowledge each other.
ppc tablet
try ppc tablet:
http://www.aacompserv.com/AACompWeb/Modules/PPCTablet/WhatIsIt.aspx
it supports connectivity over wireless and bluetooth PAN, in addition to active sync. It's not freeware, but you can get a trial version to test it.
Edit: On second thought... the epic is android, right?. So my appoligies if that is the case. The above will not work for you.
same here.
I've wasted at least 6hrs of my life trying to get it to work, and the funny thing is I own like 4 wireless mice.

After spending the last 3 months waiting patiently, I'm dismayed to hear that the Surface Pro won't have GPS. Does anyone know if there is a way Windows 8 could use the GPS signal of a Windows Phone 8 via wifi or bluetooth?
It seems ridiculous to me that I would buy a portable computer and then not be able to use accurate location based services, but I have no problem with the idea of tethering it to my phone for 4G services, so GPS could easily be the same. Similarly, the transfer of NFC data via a WP8 would be cool too.

Sorry but it won't happen. GPS tethering requires the Bluetooth serial port profile which will not be available in the WP8 Bluetooth stack. I pre-ordered my Surface RT and bought a 3G+GPS usb stick for $28 for those rare occasions that I would need a giant navigation device
With WP8 now supporting the Object Push profile, you could transfer data through Bluetooth between each device. Though definitely not as cool as NFC.
It wouldn't be *too* hard to write a virtual GPS driver that takes data, perhaps in NMEA format or similar, over WiFi or other network transport. You could then write a smartphone app that would connect to the PC (Surface or otherwise) over the network and send the smartphone's GPS info. It would be hell on the phone's battery, but for short periods or if plugged in it would work fine.
Actually, I'd be somewhat surprised if such things don't already exist. There are certainly PC apps that handle GPS data over a network connection, and there are GPS drivers for x86/x64 Windows (including Win7, which means they will also work on Win8 including Surface Pro). Whether there yet exists such a "network GPS" driver, I can't say at this time, but it wouldn't be hard to write one.
Now, getting something like that on Surface RT, or any other Windows RT device... that would take some hacking. We do that here, of course, but it won't be nearly as easy; I can't imagine that Windows RT is going to be easygoing about loading third-party drivers (considering that it doesn't even want to run third-party executables).

But that would only work where there's wifi. Won't help much where there's no signal. I wouldn't be surprised if a bluetooth - external GPS option doesn't pop up down the road. I was also disappointed to hear that there was no GPS in the Surface, as so many tablet/Ipad apps utilize location data now, which the Surface will not be able to do.
Hi All, has anyone had any success in getting android devices such as the MK808B to work with external GPS devices such as the Prolific PL2303? Desperately trying to find a way to support it so that I may use one to make a car PC. So if anyone can help / advise me how to install drivers and get it recognised in copilot I would be extremely grateful. Thanks
Dave

I did try this using my android phone and a few apps that share your phone GPS as a bluetooth GPS but couldnt get it recognized by copilot. Id definately be open to this if i can get it recognized in there. Currently im using an archos 80 G9 tablet as my car PC, but want to switch to this mini pc for better performance and a better mounting option for in the dash - so my aim is to get GPS and a HDMI / USB touchscreen (such as an egalax screen) working. Then its a go. Ill then probably turn my hand to application development (my day to day job) to come up with the best option user interface wise and will happily share all the information and software i develop with the community.
MK808B + CoPilot (GlobalSat BT-359)
I am able to use MK808B + CoPilot (GlobalSat BT-359) with the help of a mock GPS provider app (Blutooth GPS). GoogleMaps \ Sygic are both working perfect.
I am also looking for a HDMI/USB touch screen for it, any update on this?

Ok, got a copilot branded BT GPS device, and its recognised and seems to be working with some apps - but not the one i want the most, copilot. It just states its unable to register for GPS updates, which sucks!

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Dual-Electron...p/B006M49G80/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=136138107
I use it w/out issue w/Google Maps, so I'll drop co-pilot on and see how it works out.

I contacted the makers of Co-pilot and they said they dont support external GPS receivers. I have both the bluetooth and USB receivers but I think for co-pilot to support them I'd need to get to be recognised as the inbuilt GPS receiver. Co-pilot tells me its unable to register for GPS requests - but other apps _seem_ to work, but currently all my testing is done on a PC monitor, so its hard to hit the road and see if its actually working. I currently have an archos G9 80 built into my Jag XK8 and im so pleased with the functionality - but not so much with the GPS support (can be hit and miss) and with the mounting. Prior to that i had a windows PC, but that was much worse of an installation.
