I'm torn between WM and Android devices

I figure this is the best place to ask for advice.
I fell in love with HTC/keyboard phones when I got an unlocked mda (i'm on att) a few years back. They keyboard and ruggedness of the phones (they've outlasted a few drops here and there) had won me over, especially after using an n95 briefly a few years ago. I got an 8525, and now I'm on a tilt (8925). I've always upgraded roms and liked trying new things, so I tried something new about a week ago.
I went the Android (ion) on sd card route, and loved it (but tried to go nand and it never worked correctly). My battery seems to last forever now (where a week ago, before I started using android, my battery was dying at around 6 pm), the speed of everything (the phone dialer seems to be running at light speed compared to winmo) and the touchscreen responds so much better. Even with the occasional freeze and crashes, I haven't gone back to winmo (except on the occasional restart and re-running haret)
It's time for a phone upgrade. I (briefly) had a tp2, but it still felt slow in winmo 6.5. And seeing how android isn't as well developed on it as it is on the kaiser, I'm looking at other options.
I'd like to keep att 3g, and have native android, AND a hardware keyboard. Does this exist? If i gave up a keyboard (though i don't really want to since I text a bit and surf the web a bit as well), are the newer touchscreens good/fast enough? I was looking at the Hero, and the ion/magic (which seem to be almost the same,though I like the price of the ion/magic), but maybe you guys can help me out? I have to go the Ebay route, seeing as how I'm stuck on att for another year (long story short, gave upgrade to family member, who has since screwed me on their end of the bargain) so I guess that's another thing to keep in mind. Help?

Depending on how much you want to spend will Ddepend on your options right now the only official android device for att with a keyboard is the backup nd I personally think it is horrible. You could spend the $529 and get an att Nexus One, which is only touch screen but is fast enough to handle input well. Plus with the many touchscreen keyboards out now it is pretty easy to transition to touchscreen. I just did this whole post using the swype keyboard and it is pretty fast and accurate. if you can hold off then there are gonna be many new handsets comming. Plus flashing new roms for android is highly addictive lol.

In my opinion windows mobile 6.5 feels undeveloped . I know i probably havent figured it all out yet but its what i see so far.
So here I sit trying to make the best of this and hoping someone ports android over to the hd2.

If you want Android, then the Nexus is Awesome, Fast, Slim, Cool, etc. Try one out at a store to see if it fit's

i was almost ready to switch then i bought an lg expo. it is so sweet and mega fast.

Trust me, on a screen the size of 3.5+, you can type faster on a touchscreen than on a hardware keyboard

Telus Milestone is your best bet. And yes, you will have to buy it from ebay or some unofficial store.

I was a big winmo fan but they are dragging in the upgrade department.
6.5 was a minimal upgrade at best and 7 is limited on the multi-tasking front.
My son has a Motorola Droid and I really like the OS.
I'm headed for a Xperia X10 with a snapdragon processor but only after it comes to the US to support our 3G band.
That could be tomorrow or a year from now knowing SE's inability to get a device to market on time.

I'd really like to go with the nexus with it's seemingly ginormous screen (though everything has a ginormous screen compared to my tilt 1), but the $560 price tag (after taxes on the site) is quite a bit much to stomach.
I might look at the milestone, but I'm a little weary of motorola's quality, the diminutive size of the keyboard, and @ their price i'd rather stick to a touch screen only telus hero or magic.
Maybe I just need to win the lottery or knock over a bank...

I'd definitely go with the Nexus (If funds can afford), you think that it is too much now, but it is worth it when you get it (or so I've been told by... everyone).
I would sell my soul for a Nexus One, but I already sold it to Google in exchange for an extra 70mb in Gmail, should've waited

Looks like I'm getting either a HTC Desire or a X10 as wm & ms are starting to annoy me. Android just looks and feels so much better

I switched from longtime wm user to android and have not looked back. It is stable, fast, smooth, cool and fun Good luck

WM for me
I am quite happy with WM6.5.3 on my Rhodium, it does all my business and personal stuff just as I like
But if for some reason I did want to switch from WM definitely 100% sure I´ll look into Android as my first choice

Well, it's either that or iPhone OS/WebOS and we know which website doesn't support those

I've broken down and done it. Tally up one more order for a Google Nexus One with AT&T 3g bands. Now to wait impatiently until it comes in

Even if those were supported in XDA my choice wouldn´t change

From what I heard, AT&T's Backflip is ok. It's running Android as well as having a keyboard. The thing is that it's a Motorola. I believe this is Motorola's 2nd Android phone besides the Motorola Cliq (correct me if I'm wrong)

Then you heard wrong. Not only is the phone running the second worst layer of ui for Android (it runs MotoBlur, the worst is TouchWiz), it does not use Google Search, it can't use apps outside of the market, it's made by Motorola, and it has the weirdest design of a phone I've ever seen.
And I'm pretty sure it is Motorola's 3 or 4, not sure if the Devour came out before it (I know the Droid and Cliq did though).

Crackness, you sound exactly like me when it comes to looking for a phone. I am on AT&T so I want to keep that, I want speed and the hardware keyboard is a must for me, well I have a solution for you : Motorola Backflip
Yes the design is odd, but truthfully once you hold it in your hands, it actually does make sense. True the Backflip is on Android 1.5 because of the MotorBlur but they are coming out with an update soon. Otherwise the phone is amazing. Fast and keyboard is great. Trust me, it is definitely something you should look at.

GSM Andriod 2.2 w/ Keyboard?

I am wondering if anyone could point me to any good Android phones out, or coming out that meet the following items..
GSM (Must)
Have Android 2.2 at release, or for SURE be able to upgrade to it (Must)
3G + Wifi + Wifi Sharing (Must)
Built in keyboard (Must)
Good Screen (Must, prefer something like Nexus One has with 400x800 capability)
I would prefer a 1ghz speed, but a 600-800 would be acceptable. I don't care about camera or that. I prefer if it is able to get 3G speeds on TMobile's bands.
I don't really care about price, but the phone needs to be able to be bought with no contract, and be unlockable and also hopefully rootable.
I know there is the Nexus one (No keyboard), MyTouch Slide (slow processor) but is anything else better coming out?
I hear there is something just like this coming out this summer for TMobile (Project Sapphire) but I was wondering if anyone knew about anything else like this being offered?

I think your best bet would be to wait through the summer for Project Emerald. It is rumored to be the Sidekick Twist which will have a QWERTY, a 4.3" screen, Snapdragon processor, and HTC Sense. If it is not shipped with 2.2, it should defin get it.
Also MyTouch Slide has a 600MHz processor, and HTC said all phones they release this year will get 2.2 soon (no clue what soon means). So if you are willing to go into the midrange, then it is a nice option.
That is all I know. If you are willing to drop the QWERTY requirement, then you can get a Nexus.

Thanks for the reply. I am most likely going to then get a G1 to hold me over until the Sapphire comes out and I can choose between it the Nexus one and the MyTouch Slide. I really want a hardware keyboard though as I have had WinMobile with keyboard and non-keyboard and I greatly enjoyed the keyboard for to many things you can't duplicate on a non-keyboard items such as playing games.

How Happy are you with the XT720? NEED TO KNOW TODAY

I just signed up for WIND here in canada and they have ****ty phones. I really was gonna go for the Galaxy S but not gonna happen since i went WIND. I been using a BB 9700 and am very happy with it but i wanted to to switch to the robot for a while now.
So my only option for now is to go BB or go robot. The XT720 got mixed reviews and no 2.2 update really making me have second thoughts. The under powered processor is another let down but i hear you can overclock it to 1GHz? but how bad is that on the battery life (i would hate to charge it daily). the reviews said its slow and under powered but i need to know what you guys think.
I know it will never be a galaxy but can it come close with the hacks and overclocking etc?
Do you think we will get 2.2 unofficially from the Korean update?
PS i had a omnia 2 before the BB and if this is as sluggish as the O2 then forget it.

1. XT720 will not get official 2.2 update. Motoroi (Korean XT720) already got the update on Christmas Eve and developers are trying to port it to other XT720 phones, but they're still having some issues with proximity sensor, gravity sensor and touch sensitive button LED lights. 3G connection is also still not working.
2. Even in 2.1 update 1, we can overclock the phone (up to 1.2 GHz), install App2SD to move your apps to SD card and have some tweaks to make the phone running a lot better than original stock.
3. Unfortunately, you'll have to charge your phone daily (same as other touch-screen phones larger than 3.5" screen). My best record is 40 hours continuously running without charging. can't go over that.
4. After a few tweaks, the phone is better than Nexus One (according to the benchmarks also). But the HD video recording sucks. (HDMI output is also just for show. can't get it to work nicely). 8MP camera is just on per with other 5MP cameras. Xenon Flash rocks when it's dark, but it kills you with the lagging time and battery life.
Apart from the things mentioned in 4, I love my phone. I've been using this for 6 months already and still thinking to keep it for at least another 6 months before getting a new one even I can't get 2.2 update on the phone. (Throw that BB away. It's Stone Age's phone).

Love it. Although my previous phone was a WinMo phone, so anything better will seem like heaven.
@spiderx_mm's points are all true, however it's not that much of a big deal for me. I guess I'll root mine eventually, but only to get rid of stock apps I do not use to get me some space.

well my main concern is the lag, if we can make the lag go away altogether i can see myself using the phone. Using a 3rd party app to get apps on the SD card is no big deal as long as it works for any/all apps. Hopefully users can convince Moto to get of there ass and support there devices so we get a official 2.2 update, that way we get some major speed increase, flash and apps on SD officially.
Coming from a O2 which i had to tweak the hell out of and still have slow response crashes and reboots, it start to get annoying and i don't want on that boat again. I ended up having to disable everything just so i can use it regularly. This is something i never had to do with the BB and is 1000x better then winmo so i really hope thats not a issue with this phone due to the low RAM.
I dumped the O2 and went BB was coz of the lack of RAM no matter what i did i could not get more then 2 apps working or they just started randomly closing on me.
1.) If clocked to 1GHz dose the phone heat up?
2.) How much RAM do you have after 2-3 days of usage without a reboot or it dieing?
3.) Is it sluggish at all after the overclock? i can see it lag a bit, but can't deal with it crashing (Samsung Omnia 2)?
4.) What about if you add a live wallpaper and some cool apps that are resource hungry? (just wanna know how much it can handle)
5.) How is browsing websites on the phone? dose it start to hang the phone lag/crash?
On a regular day i wanna be able to do the following at the same time; surf the web while listing to music, be on MSN and taking calls/SMS/emailsand facebook/twitter and youtube etc. This is what i do with my BB always have MSN running and music playing and usually have the browser open and emails coming in etc check facebook go on youtube links etc I use the BB to the max and got pretty used to it and can't go back to using 2 apps at a time like i had to with the O2.
Even if i can be browsing the web and listing to music and be on MSN and take calls/sms/emails without it hanging, lagging. I could try to live with it, even the BB lags a bit but maybe like 20seconds or so very rarely i have to do a battery pull. But that was a daily thing with the O2.
With the O2 i could not listen to music and surf the web at the same time, if i had HTC Sense running forget even running the browser without getting the low memory message and this is with a stripped down light ROM. I really don't wanna be on that train REALLY REALLY DONT.
As you can see how much i have suffered coz of winmo and hoping this phone is better.

You'll not believe this, but this little toy from Motorora beats the Galaxy S, yes you heard me right, and no, i'm not joking.
If you go over to the I9000 section of the forum, you know Galaxy S is like bread & water, but when you put the 2 together, it beats the SGS hands on 2.1 eclair.
it has got App2SD or App2Card, it can be safely OC to 1 Ghz, stock is 720 Mhz
the screen is smoooooooooth sailing, not laggy like the SGS, GPS is perfect!
SGS GPS works, but it can be better
XT720 battery last a day+ on a single charge even when OCed
8 MP camera, dedicated camera buttons
HDMI output man! HDMI! not even the SGS has that.
you can throw in a 16 GB or 32 GB microSD, it comes out of the box with a 8 GB microSD
3G is really fast on Wind Mobile
Tons of hacks, all well brewed to perfection.
the machine is rock solid and stable... unlike the SGS
Everyone at work were impressed with the XT720 demo, they were not as impressed when the SGS were demoed, due the minor lags.
I was originally in FIDO, but the $40 plan was too sweet to pass over.
You'll not go wrong with the XT720
your next best bet if you really don't pick this one up, are the:

Once custom ROMs (obviously, not a custom kernel) get released on the XT702 like on the international Milestone, you won't even need to overclock it for good speeds and lag-free GUI. Even the Droid 2 with its 1GHz OMAP chip can lag with the stock ROM.
The Galaxy S would have been the best phone ever made if Samsung had used a traditional RGB subpixel system instead of terrible pentile matrix (missing 33% subpixels, awfully inaccurate colors). IF you can live with the Galaxy S' pentile matrix display (and that is a big IF) while reading small text, then consider the T-Mobile version mentioned by AllGamer.

Your phone isn't smooth in either of your videos (Maybe just a TINY bit in the MIUI transitions video). That's my major problem with the XT720. I've used my sister's Galaxy S and it's nearly as smooth as an iPhone 4. I would only recommend the XT720 to someone who does not mind that you cannot customize the ROM. Angry Birds doesn't even run at full speed compared to the one on my old iPod Touch.

I ended up getting the nokia 5230 and giving it to my dad, will be getting the SGS for myself. The 2.2 upgrade was a total let down plus no custom ROM's or tweaks kida pushed me off and i never like Moto . SGS has its problems but i think i can live with that because of 2.2 and also up coming 2.3.
just finding that custom ROM is all i will need, if the XT can be OC'ed then maybe the SGS can also. Why would you guys recommend the tmobile version versus the bell version? are they not the same thing minus the antenna's and design?

I would only get the Nexus S because of android 2.3 (its gonna come for the SGS officially and even if it doesn't we will have the Nexus port) and the LED flash. Other than that the devices are the same from what i have seen.

you would have noticed it runs on 1700/2100
Bell runs on 850/1900
the Tmobile version runs on 1700/2100

I probably would recommend the same thing. Though I have one odd use case that most people do not have and that is "wifi" tethering (after rooting)for those times when I need to connect another device to access the Internet. e.g. laptop, PSP, iPod etc.
The phone itself is a bit overpriced for just that one feature though. However, since I recently lost my iPod touch, this would act as a replacement for it.
So far the relationship I have with the phone (got it on Dec 14) can be described as "I hate it, but my life will not be fun without it"
However, I if I still had my iPod, I may get Alcatel Tribe just because it is cheaper.

I know WIND/T-Mobile run on the same bands and Bell/Verizon i think are the same bands and Rogers/AT&T are same bands.
I'm stuck with a 3 year contract with bell and that was why i was thinking of switching to WIND's miracle plan and giving my dad my bell contract. But that not what ended up happening, i stayed with my bell contract and got dad a nokia with the $25 which meant i could in the end get the SGS i wanted since it came out in june.

that's exactly what i did, i switched over to WIND
those plans were AMAZING!!!! (enjoying every minute of it ) unfortunately the lats day to get it was last year 12/31
no more worries about calling long distance
no more worries about sending SMS to international numbers
no more worries about data limit
no more worries about anything.... all feature, all unlimited, ALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! muahahahahahaha!!!!!

Wind's plans are awesome, but the coverage is somewhat ****ty still. Just gotta wait until they put more towers out there. Now that there's Mobilicity in town (they seem to use AWS2100 as well) that's only a matter of time.

im planing to buy the Xt720 soon, but my question is wether it runs somewhat smooth or is it lagging sometimes, because there were mixed replies in some other thread.
And when i OC the milestone xt720 and maybe put the Froyo JIT thing on it, how would it be in terms of speed in comparison to the HTC Desire?
Is it a huge drawback that the phone cant be updated to 2.2 yet? I mean except for performance it doesn't change that much right?
Overall would you suggest the phone to me or is there a better alternative in this pricerange?
And my last question is, when i root my phone is the chance for real higher that it gets a defect or are these warnings pretty much meanless?

when clocked at 1000, you wont even know the difference to when HTC Desire was on 2.1
if you remember how it was for the Desire to run 2.1, then that's how it feels on this phone
we're working towards porting a 2.2 to work on our phone, it'll be a matter of time before we get it

Ok thank you thats great to hear.
But when i overclock my phone to 1GH will there be issues with the phone, i mean will it stop functioning earlier when overclocked that much or doesn't it matter at all?
In Terms of speed, even when not overclocked the motorola milestone xt720 is faster/less laggy then the samsung galaxy 3 i5800 right? Because i saw a video where the xt720 was lagging and galaxy 3 wasnt.

Hy i´m verry Happy with this Device....i´ve not Modified anything....only installed Updates and some Apps and everything is fine.....i´ve bid it from Ebay as New for 186 €....so for me its the Best Phone i´ve ever bought and it was very cheap.....

here's my view
Bada OS = sucks, no freedom, no choices
phone itself = good phone and amazing AMOLED screen
so if you are satisfied to have a phone that is a phone, and works, and able to take pictures, then there is no need to change
but if you want the wonderful FREE stuff that you get off Android Market, then you'll need an Android Phone
and the XT720 is a very good phone that serves all purposes, it might not be the top of the line, but it can keep up without a sweat
a bit shy on the battery life
however... the if you were using a WAVE, that means you were on a 3G HSDPA 900 / 2100 network
the XT720 runs on 3G HSDPA 1700 / 2100 network
are you sure that is compatible?

Thanks for the reply bro. Yeah I['m still in a dilemma of I should switch. I never had any android phones before. That's why I think that xt720 would be a good starting phone for me to try android. but the thing that is holding me back from switching is that xt720 is only runs 2.1 eclair. the phone memory is too low to isntall many apps. I read somewhere that you can use a certain app or hack that let's you install the apps on the memory card, but it also stated that it still uses some part of the phone memory,.
I got bored on this bada os. No customization, very simple and mimimalistic interface.

the memormy may be small. It's not laggy at all with more than 1 widget and multiple apps open (even w/o overclock). And 2.1, alright, but Dexter is working on the 2.2 port and he's gonna throw out a bèta one of these days. So 2.2 is on it's way and if the kexec crack starts to work good, then we could also have newer android versions later this year. So updates are not a problem for now.
To the TS I'd say: throw away that Wave and get yourself the XT720 It's a really good Android-phone and like AllGamer says: not the top of the line, but it sure can keep up and the camera is really good, hardware too and it just does what it does and that's what a phone needs to do IMHO: do what it does.
But indeed, check the MHz to see if it's compatible.

to the TS: since u are geting a new phone please DO NOT settle for anything less than froyo and 512MB ram or you'll be regret. speaking from experience, i own the xt720 and my wife's nexus one runs wayyyy better with the additional ram. the ram really helps when u have many apps running

I have 3 phones - HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire and this xt720. The xt720 (with O.C.1000) is laggiest of all. The response is much slower than the other two. Granted, it's rather unfair to compare the Desire HD with this due to the price. However, the usage experience is very bad.
Put it this way, I listen to music, fine. When a call arrives, it takes 2 seconds to unlock the screen because the screen stalls for that long. After that, I missed the call and have to wait another 2 seconds for the contact list to pop up so that I can call back. I dont have any of the issues with the HTC phones. Context switching is SLOW on this phone and no surprise, that IS the memory (RAM) being so small.

dude! your phone is something seriously wrong. most of the XT720 users don't complaint like this.
I've compared my phone with Nexus One (Running 2.1) and to my surprise, Nexus One is way too sluggish.
Moreover, you're comparing the phone with devices running Android 2.2 which obviously performs better than 2.1 regardless of hardware (just compare two Nexus One running 2.1 and 2.2 respectively) . So, wait till Dextor finished porting android 2.2 and compare again. you'll be surprised.

hmm now I'm confused, half says that xt720 is a good phone, the other says it's sluggish and lags. hmm. I still can't decide. Wave is a good multimedia phone, but I'm not using it that much because I already bought an hdtv and I prefer watching in the bigscreen.

Then, obviously xt720 fails for not getting 2.2 from Motorola. Depite high hopes and expectations from Dextor (thanks and keep up the good work!); no offence but the port and time-line is not guarenteed. It's a risk-factor big or small.
For similar >priced< phone, I simply cannot see any reason to get xt720 instead of the HTC Desire -- already working at 2.2 means more features/ performance out of the box. There is no need to overlock, app2sd, JIT, etc etc.
Surely we all enjoy tuning and optimizing our phones (that's why we're here!), but this is no way to expect any average person to do all that just to make the one product "slighly on par" with the other. We are paying similar price afterall.
The xt720 has better xenon flash/ 8MP camera. But, if I want to take a good photo/video, it'll be coming from a proper camera/camcorder.

have you ever though about the radio bands?
not all phones works on all 3G networks
maybe the OP is looking to buy a phone that works for the network he/she is using or planing to use.
that was exactly my case, i switched network and all the phones that i liked, did not work on the network, and the only 2 choices were XT720 or Nexus S

Moving back to Android from WP7 - Which phone?

After trying out WP7 for a month, I'm ready to get a proper Android phone (only used NITDroid and the Nook so far)
My problem is I'm rather used to the "smoothness" of WP7. Will something like the Galaxy S2 have the performance I want? What other phones should I look at? Rooting would be nice, tethering would be a dealmaker/breaker and it must support GSM 850 (Telstra Australia)
Any ideas? I do particularly like Samsung, but I'm not sure if they're anti-CyanogenMod.

If you want the smoothness of WP7...or only something close actually...go with an HTC Sense phone. Sense is about as smooth as you get with Android.

I've never tried a WP7 phone, but my nexus OC'd by 100 mhz is damn smooth.
I couldn't imagine anything smoother although its not DC, so sometimes it gets choppy when doing multitasking

While android is very slowly improving on that front you won't find an android phone that can compare to wp7 in terms of smoothness, the galaxy s 2 is the closest you'll get and after testing one out just yesterday its still no wp7 in that regard.

Samsung is far from anti-cyanogenmod, in fact they sent brand new gs2s to CM7 devs. I'd try as many phones out as you can and see what works best for you, but from what I've seen so far, the gs2 is the phone to beat.
