Pick My New Phone

I am ready to toss out my old Wing (my Kaiser died) and am in the market for a new phone.
The problem I am having is that I feel like purchasing a phone now would be a mistake, since it is likely that a new, mo-betta version will be out in a month or so.
As such, I am willing to wait, up to three or four months if necessary, for the perfect phone.
I have been shopping around, visiting Gizmodo and the like, searching for the best possible phone that should last me until 2012.
Anyone have any suggestions? Buy now, or wait, and if so, which phone?

Comming form kaiser you must need a hardware keyboard.
If that is correct you have 2 options:
1. Buy now a great Rhodium (the best hardware keyboard to this date)
2. Wait a few months and go for the Tera (smaller screen than Rhodium

If you don't need a hardware keyboard, HD2 all the way!

If you want some new excitement from the old WM scene, then go for the awesome Nexus One android on tmobile!

Honestly, its either you settle for already out of date with any WM6.5 phone or you go for Android for which updates will keep on rolling out straight from the manufacturer. Windows Phone Series 7 was just announced, but its not going to be available until the holidays... that's 10 months from now. So if you get an HD2, unless there are ROM leaks (which are unlikely given the hush environment thus far and the fact that the ZuneHD can't be yet be cracked), your stuck with WM6.5. If you get a Touch Pro2, your already a year behind, as the hardware specifications was released a over year ago in the original Xperia X1. So honestly, Nexus One or X10 (assuming you want XDA support) are probably the way to go, if you want your phone to last you a long time. Otherwise, iPhone 3GS or Palm Pre, as both of those will definitely get all OS updates likely for the next 2 years.

I am currently on T-Mobile and with three lines, will probably be with them for a while. I also travel to Africa and Europe from time to time, so I prefer a Quad-Band, if this is still the tech for that.
I do like my hardware QWERTY, but the Wing's keyboard is lacking so I've kinda gotten used to the on-screen keyboard. I really liked Kaiser's keyboard though...
I don't like WinMo7's new interface, per the hand's-on reviews I've seen. I guess this means I'll be looking at Android.
So far, I like the Nexus One best due to the 1ghz processor, but I've read bad things about the contract(s). I'll probably end up buying the phone outright if I can get away with no contracts at all.

Snark, I suggest you get the T-Mobile HTC HD2 for the U.S. I suggest you wait 2 months for the HTC HD2 to be released. I think you will be able to unlock it and make it work elsewhere if you travel.

Nexus One or HTC Bravo hands down.

I like what I've read about the HD2, the specs seem to be in line with the Nexus One.
Both phones look nice, but the Nexus One seems to have an edge on the HD2, since the Android OS is open source and the HD2's OS is months from being obsolete.
From everything I've read, it looks as if WinMo7 will be locked down and that really worries me. The only reason I've stuck with WinMo phones is because of you great folks here at xda-dev. If they lock down WinMo7, how long will this site continue to offer the support they so freely give to WinMo users?
As far as the Nexus One goes, I can see that some of you are already offering OS updates for Android phones, so I suppose that this is the only way to move forward?
HD2 Pros: Can expect subsidization from my carrier.
HD2 Cons: Appears to run WinMo6.5, will the support last 2 years or more?
Nexus One Pros: Open-Source OS, tons of apps and supports and growing!
Nexus One Cons: Not subsidized under my current plan, more expensive to start but cheaper in the long run.

Seems to be a bit of excitement about the HTC Desire (nee Bravo, nee Passion) and according to the folks at modaco, its specs rival and sometimes surpass the Nexus One.
From the (leaked) photos, it sports the Sense UI and has a optical trackball for onscreen navigation.
Still no hardware keyboard, but I have the feeling that this is going to be a rare beast in the future anyway. At one point it was a must-have, but since the iPhone made it without one, the newer phones look to be pushing the envelope as well.
I will be waiting for HTC's MWC announcement today. I suspect they will offer it to Orange first in Europe and then hope to drop it in the States by X-Mas. If so, I could always order one and have it shipped overseas, but I would probably opt for the Nexus One in that case first...

Yesterday I bought the TouchPro2. It's pretty nice, but I am seriously missing the extra hardware buttons I use to interact with the Start Menu and my fav eBook reader :-(
I'm loving the awesome RAM and the nearly unlimited ROMs out there. EnergyROM's main thread has over 1000 pages already, wow!
As soon as the HD2 is back in stock, I'll be switching over to it and giving the Rhodium to my wife.

HD2 or Nexus One

I have a choice between an HD2 or a Nexus one by trading someone for it. Which one should I get and why?

I'm gonna say nexus one even though the hd2 has android now by way of unnoficial means. I don't know if everything is fully working and will continue to work but windows mobile is pretty meh. Its always flustered t6he crap out of me albeit the hardware wasn't HD2 levels. But if you like windows or your one of those serious business types then HD2 for you.

I would really like the hd2 since Android is now possible on it. I just don't know how stable it is at the moment. Can anyone tell me what works on hd2 and what doesn't?

It's still a bit far from being fully compatible. Pretty much everything works but with certain conditions. For example, the Desire ROM IMO runs everything (even the camera), but it's not compatible with certain Windows Mobile Roms and even the factory ROM isn't fully compatible. The battery isn't lasting as long when running Android either. You're probably going to want to get a Class 6 Micro SD for it if you want some speed added to it too. IMO it's pretty damn close to being fully compatible and I feel glad I got the HD2 over the Nexus one after seeing how close it is to having Android ported to it. Still, don't go for it if THAT is the only reason you want it. Android will not be 100% done it. It'll still have moments where it could freeze and you have to manually reset it. For all we know, the developers could just get pissed and quit developing for it tomorrow so I suggest not depending on it being fully done.

I picked up Nexus three months ago...since I'm not that patient regarding firmware updating...Nexus being a real google phone relaly got me then, so after painfully deciding for something like, two weeks, i bought nexus...
if flashing newly cooked ROMS on a regular basis and feeling excited but whatever new things come out and eager to try them first, go nexus.

I am a HD2 owner, but if I had the chance to go back in the past, I would probably choose the Nexus One. However, I like both very much, but the "Google Experience" is much more attractive than win mobile 6.5.

Now you can have Android on it

If you want to use Android, go for nexus. Yes you can have Android on HD2. I tried it on my TD2 also, but the battery life was horrible, and the phone gets really really hot, when used, and no call sounds at all.
Hopefully this will get better, but nobody can be sure if the port to android for WM devices will be fully functional in the future at all.

You will have a better android 2.2 FroYo experience on the Nexus.

They both have problems, nexus one is cursed with touch button problem (not sure in the new ones) anyway, the one I had was cursed with the problem. Hd2 i can not say, but will be receiving one soon. only problem is with the hd2 that People can't use windows Mobile and cry about " I want android" other than that its a good phone.

Touchscreen on HD2 is kinda flaky at best even after hacking, but the HUGE screen is a big plus for reading e-books.
Nexus one has Trad Chinese interface out of the box, no custom ROM required. All you have to do is to get IME.
It's all about mobile OS preference. If you prefer Android 2.2, go for nexus one, but if you're T-Mobile US customer, wait for HTC Vanguard.

I bought an HD2 through upgrading my mobile contract last week and I returned it in six days for a Nexus one (bought from a private seller). Windows Mobile home screen looks nice but that's about it. The layout of OS is extremely confusing and takes a long while to get use to. The screen is very nice but wasnt enough to keep me from returning the phone. I also installed Android on the phone but it will still be a while to fix all the bugs and there are plenty and it just never feels right in terms of stability. Go with the nexus one. It is awesome. If the HD2 initially came with official android, HD2 all they way.

Is the HD2 The best all around phone ever made?

I mean- it has the capabilities of 4G on TMO when released
dualboots android (perfectly stable and daily driver)
win mo 6.5 for buisness use/ more apps/ preference
top of the line specs... snapdragon, 4.3inch screen, dual led flash etc.
the only thing missing is an 8MP camera, but i would rather have a dualboot android than 3 more MPs.
This leads me to the question- is the HD2 the best all around phone out today?

I bought one the day they debuted and it was a pile of crap I went through three of them and didn't get one that didn't freeze on boot at least every other time, or delete all my information every other day. So no I do not believe it is the best all around phone, I would say thats the nexus one personally

It not only let you boot Android and WM, coming soon will boot WP7 too!
So it will be the first and only device booting 3 OS and specs are same or even better than newer devices.
I say yes: Leo is one of the best HTC devices ever made!

I believe it might be...I own an N1, G2, iphone 4, and soon to be Glacier and I use my HD2 the most...Android is now stable as ever...Gingerbread will be on it soon...this phone has been a monster since it dropped..!!

I would agree too, which is why I'm finding it so difficult to upgrade and part with now.
The HTC HD7 or HTC Desire HD are my current next thoughts (hopefully this month too), but can't say I'm excited about either of them and hoping for something a little more special to come out by anyone really (of course leaning more towards HTC as I have done so for over 8 years now).

Easily my favorite phone ever which is non-Android.

I was actually thinking about picking an HD2 up for the hell of it to throw Android on since I'm getting sick of the size of my HTC Aria...but I may switch from AT&T to Spring to get an Evo or Evo2.

I'm one of those guys who won't use a phone without a physical keyboard. I can't get used to screen-typing, I just don't like the feel of it. If the HD2 had a Pro variant with a slide-out, I'd own it already. I recognize it's an awesome phone though, just not for me.

+1. If there was a pro-version THEN it would be THE best phone ever to-date. I consider myself a VERY heavy user and the ROM I have seems to work like a charm.
The only reason I have to take the battery out is to turn it off as the on/off button has been reprogrammed!
Sadly, switching to a Dell Venue in two weeks... oh for the keyboard.
(Orb, AFAIK - and I could be wrong! - WinPho7 requires hardware mods for it to work on a HD2 so don't expect it)

So you're going the W7P route? The Dell Venue looks good, but not please with the 3.5mm jack on top (like silly iPhone thingys) and the keyboard looks like old school keyboards being far to small to actually use. Hmm... decisions... decisions?!

The jack on top means that when you dock it (which I'm guessing you will be able to) into a 3rd party desktop cradle you will still be able to listen to music - unlike my HD2's docks!
Don't know how the keys will feel.... I can always send it back if they are bad

I had a Rhodium before and must say I´m a real keyboard device person but got tired of the slowness of Rhodium, then got Leo and I´m still missing a real kb but in terms of speed there is no comparative.

I moved to T-Mo almost two weeks ago over from VZW. I had T-Mo before but coverage was far less back then.
I picked up the HD2 and really liked it but missed Android. I had several failed attempts to get Android to run. I then decided to separate my work and personal line with two phones so I grabbed the G2.
Now I re-flashed my HD2 to a Mega Leo Rom, was an Energy ROM. Then I made a second attempt at Android on a fresh reformatted sd and put on Mdeejay EVo Sense rom.
I was amazed how slick Android boots on HD2. Of Course there has been some bumps with a Flaky Data connection and it will not install Angry Birds from the Market. I was drawn to the HD2 because I had a Droid X and the larger screen was the attraction.
In the end the HD2 is a great device with all the options and have a Snapdragon processor makes it available to compete with current phones.

That maybe, but I've never used mine for playing music through a dock, I usually make my own custom docks and prefer to have the ability to pick up my phone from out of my pocket, with it being the right way up already and the jack underneath for easy usage generally, especially whilst seated on the TfL for example.
However, I'd image this is a 50/50 point, where half would prefer the jack on the bottom and vice versa.
CPW are bugging me weekly to upgrade to anything fro free and with just a 12 month contract, but stuck in what to go for. I'm only going to keep the phone for 3-4 months too and probably give it to my other half to use (whose a heavy Outlook user) so thinking a W7P, but I know she'd prefer Android with the newer HTC sense. I'm also not impressed enough with the Desire HD, so wondering if I should be waiting.
I just bought a Sony LiveView to go with an Android 2.0+ and can't find out if it will work with a W7P at all (too early to ask I guess), so thinking to go with a Desire HD with the Sony LiveView until a newer handset comes out that is much better (probably in a couple of months) and give the above to my Mrs to use, maybe?
I think I read that Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) needs 1.5Ghz to run well and in general smartphones are still some months away from that official speed.

I was curious what was your reason behind purchasing either a phone, tablet, or slate? Please Bold the device name, so we know the product. Some products have common names, such as Desire. Most of know about HTC Desire but its for new the comers.

So I've purchased the last year and half
Nexus, To get into Development and I needed an unlock phone. My iPhone 3G was slow and Nexus was just shockingly fast.
iPad: It had 3G and GPS, i wanted to use it as GPS Dashboard. I ran into troubles with the apps, none of the apps support the full screen navigation till several months later.
iPhone 4: Development and just to be hip (don't slam me for being hip...)
Nexus S: Also great for development and the damn thing had a front facing camera that I could use within development apps.
Moto Atrix: 4G*, Dual Core, frontfacing camera, GFX, 1gig of ram, and I thought it would be great for development but I prefer the Nexus S. Honestly, I love my Atrix but its a pain. Its running on 2.2 as of now, the 4G connection is slower than 3G, and MOTO Blur. Moto Blur should be an option on its devices.
Asus Eee transformer: It was cheap, fast, and of course (you guessed it!) for development...

I got this Desire about a year ago. When i choosed it i could also pick a Galaxy S and an iPhone4 (contract). I didn't pick the Galaxy because i wasn't convinced about the build quality, the annoying lack of flash and notification led annoyed me and also because at that time development for that specific phone was kinda weak. The iPhone wasn't even worth considering because iOS4 was piss poor compared with froyo, and also because xda goodies were just too tempting for me. Probably if the iPhone had iOS5 on it already, with many android features copied, my choice would have been a little harder, but i was so curious about android that i would have probably grabbed the Desire anyway.

I find it interesting that a lot of people now are working towards Android, what made you decide on Android when you had options like WebOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian. Or Was it the hardware too?

Well actually being a long trade HTC fan helped me deciding. I was coming from a winmo 6.1 HTC device (Cruise) and i wanted to try out android. Sure hardware was also something i took into account: android phones were much better than any symbian back then already, and WP7 seemed unable to compete in terms of functionality, it seemed to be a really locked down os plus i truly hated the interface (and i still do lol). WebOS was actually worth considering, but it already felt like something from the past: back in the days of the big android boom i saw google's platform as the best option, tho i always appreciated palm devices in terms of form factor and ease of use.

I love how Palm's GUI and user experience is right in the middle of being like an iPhone and Android. Its pretty as an iphone but open like android device. Its an ideal OS but I think the hardware... Thats whole different story, Its so small.

Motorola Milestone 2: Because I needed a new phone and wanted a qwerty keyboard and wanted to try something different (android)

Incredible: I wanted a decent Android phone with development going strong and it was only $99 at the time.
Nook Color: Wanted a tablet but couldn't dish out $300+.

I had the desire to purchase Nook Color and turn it into a honeycomb device but I really needed a snappy processor and a good graphic accelerator. Have you hacked the Nook Color and if so, with what?

Last year and a half for me:
iPhone 3GS 32GB White: Loved my original iPhone from 2008 (primary on TMO), but it couldn't run any new apps so I upgraded and the price was right. Sold it.
iPhone 3GS 16GB Black: I really did not like white. At all, so I bought this, but it was an unlockable baseband, ugh. Sold it.
HTC Desire CDMA: My backup phone (Touch Diamond on Verizon) was getting too old, so I thought I'd pick up something modern to replace it.
Droid Incredible AMOLED: Bought for my wife to use on PagePlus, to replace the original iPhone she had since 2008 on TMO. She loves it, hates iPhones.
Droid Incredible SLCD: Liked my wife's D-Inc better than the HTC Desire, but I liked the Desire's SLCD better than the AMOLED, so I got an SLCD D-Inc for myself.
Nexus One: I bought it to use on TMO, because after using the D-Inc, I didn't like my white iPhone 3GS at all. Not just because I don't like white phones, but because its low-res screen looked like crap in comparison. Love the N1, still have it, but plan to sell.
iPhone 4: My new primary on TMO, replaced the N1. Main reason for it, because I already have a D-Inc as a backup, my wife has a D-Inc, and we both decided variety=good, better not to have too many of the same thing, so iPhone it is. I do like it, love the Retina display, build quality, size, thinness, how it feels in the hand, smooth games, and I'm much happier with it now that I found a nice HTC Clock for it.
HTC Surround: Mostly got this because it was a good price (at the time) on the marketplace, and I'm already familiar with Android and iOS, I wanted to see what WP7 is like. I am actually more impressed with it than I expected to be. UI a bit boring, but the same apps on WP7 are WAY nicer than their iOS and Android counterparts. Only problem is, there aren't very many apps available in general.
Samsung Omnia II i920: WM6.5 phone, bad ESN, that I picked up cheap. Sort of got it in my head this would be a nice dev phone. I thought it would be cool to write an "Alien Dalvik" for WM6.5 so it could run Android apps. I just hate the thought of all the millions of "obsolete" WM6.5 phones out there and had the idea that a Dalvik VM for WM would be a very good form of recycling. Will probably end up selling as I seldom follow through on any idea I ever get.
MyTouch 3G: It was cheap, thought it could make a nice desk clock that auto-sets its time/date. It would have cost at least as much to buy an atomic desk clock that's always lit, and this could even display weather at the same time.

A very old HTC Touch HD running Windows Mobile 5.1 (or was it 6.1, I forget the number)

HTC Evo 4G: I love Android, easily rooted/unlocked. Bought used on eBay several months ago. Won't upgrade until contract is up in Feb 2012. Bought to replace HTC Hero CDMA on Sprint.
HTC Hero CDMA (aka HeroC): Bought refurbished from Sprint for $80, no contract renewal needed. I bought this to get rid of a crappy Blackberry 8520 I was using on Sprint that I got free when I started my contract. For me, Android does what I need.

HTC Hero CDMA (aka HeroC): Bought refurbished from Sprint for $80, no contract renewal needed. I bought this to get rid of a crappy Blackberry 8520 I was using on Sprint that I got free when I started my contract. For me, Android does what I need.

I feel sorry for BB lately, its going down hill fast. They made a pretty bad moves since the iPhone came out. Nice bargin on HTC Hero, lovely device.

Same here, i still hope that they manage to release something nice soon, the new bold coming out on september isn't that bad it seems...

iPhone 3GS 16GB Black: First experience with smartphone. And needed one for work wich allowed me to connect and synch easy with my workspace
Galaxy Apollo: Had some issues with iphone sold it and got this pretty cheap Android phone. Using it for roughly a year now and like it alot. Perfect synch to both work and personal spaces.
iPad: Won it so didn't buy it but really didn't like or needed it that much so sold it after 1 month and got myself a new video card

First i had a LAMEE chocolate (BL-40) from LG - never had a worse phone on my life. I wanted to try touchscreen and stuff, and it was almost free...
Then i switched to a blackberry. That was a total deception. EVERYBODY said that Blackberry was soooo good, i found it to be an average phone at best.
After that i switched to a Xperia X10, which came with a malfunction on the usb conector and tech support declared it as bad use. (never trust brazilian tech support - is the worse). I got it resoldered, and it worked for another 10 months. - I wanted a phone with android mostly because of its sync, to have all my services linked with my gmail account was awesome.
Last saturday i got a Samsung Galaxy SII, and so far is the best. I decided not to go with Sony anymore, and i wanted one of the newest. I'm yet to experience lag with it...

The I i saw the dell venue pro running the sexy wp7 UI i was in love. I had a few of the big name android devices that were huge at the time and they just seemed slow in comparison. Then there was the ergonomic feel, the curved glass, the keyboard that's flawless for one-handed use... Everything about this phone is just flawless IF you weren't one of the ones who got one of the faulty initial devices.

Moto Defy Because I needed a new phone, and this seemed the best for my spesifications, and, well, for development. For example, I am trying to port Motoblur widgets and apps into MIUI.

HTC Legend - Bought this because I needed the Chuck Norris of smartphones. You could hammer some nails with this baby. The size is also spot on for me.

HTC Thunderbolt: 4G (15-20mbps downloads). 'Nuff said.

I think enough people are fine with all-touchscreen phones for HTC to do fine.... the article said qwerty sales just aren't cutting it enough for them to continue. In my mind, part of the problem is the keyboards aren't really good enough, but that is just my opinion. For me, I haven't seen a really good keyboard on a device that wasn't branded a Sidekick. But I think more what it is is that the iPhone kinda shaped people's perception, and for some reason people like that form factor. But I also think that some company(s) will step up and realize there is still a market for qwerty phones.
My introduction to smartphones was the old Sidekicks, so to me a smartphone is a mini console or terminal, with keyboard and landscape screen. And I'm gonna keep seeing it that way until there just aren't any more like that..... which perhaps means this might be my last HTC phone!

That's a shame - they really had a happy customer in me.
I should get a galaxy with my next paycheck just to start getting used to the samsung way of things.
Motorolla is kinda in limbo until we find out whether Huwai is going to buy them or not from Google...
...who else does that leave? just off brands or low quality losers like LG - every LG phone i've ever owned was a complete and utter POS failure, and would never buy one of their products again, period.

excuse me...u forgot the tp2 lol...i dont even recall them releasing a tilting screen android either. Having my phone serve as its own dock would be nice again. I dont care much for the bb style kbs but the dell had some nice looking phones for wp7....it wouldve been nice to run wm or android on one. I think htc & others would do better in qwertys sales if the released higher end device instead of these cheapo lg quality ones. Far as the iphone in away it did but there also been a craze for thin/light phones. Its funny cuz those are normally the same ones complaining about battery life.

What a joke...that actually really pisses me off because I woke up this morning with my new POS hummingbird processor powered samsung exhibit 1 4G and tried to draft up an article for my website, failed, and moved to my laptop. I'm a guy who has huge hands, so it's looking more and more like I'll have to scrap HTC and go with an albatross Note. Whoever said that the qwerty phones were failing because of a lack of power behind them, you're absolutely right! How can the smartphone maker not see that correlation...

Every smartphone I've ever used has had a physical keyboard. My first was the T-Mobile DASH (Win6.x), then a Moto Cliq (the best keyboard but a crappy phone). Next was the MyTouch 3G Slide, also a really nice keyboard. Now, the MT4GS. Though the keyboard on the 4GS isn't as good as the 3GS, I still prefer it over having a phone with no keyboard.

I <3 my Rhodium (TP2). First smartphone I got was the Kaiser (Tilt), then the Rhodium, and now the MT4GS. The TP2 had the best keyboard of the 3 by far.
I must say I am going to miss hardware keyboards, especially from HTC since they're the only phone manufacturer I buy from. I don't think touchscreens will ever be as quick and easy as hardware keyboards are.

As an side: duly noted about the tp2 I never had one but I do hear lots of people praising that phone and it's keyboard, and not just in this thread. I also agree that for the most part, the companies sacrifice other things when they make a great keyboard.

I loved my TM2 as well! The keyboard was great and only replicated on the HTC Pro, released only for Sprint in the US. Honestly, I'd probably be rocking that right now if there was a T-Mobile version in the US.
This is all sad but I'm really hoping that the niche QWERTY line continues in step with the MyTouch, Sidekick, Droid, and Samsung models. No one can ever type fast in home row fashion on a virtual keybaord with great accuracy!

HTC is walking the same line that Nokia did a couple years ago. Consolidate! Save Resources! Be Mediocre! Lose Market Share! Sell Out to M.... Huawei?
Better know about it now, so I can start looking for another company. Samsung seems good right now. They are big enough to support a qwerty phone for a while.

As long as there is an Asia, there will be a market for ancient anything.
Hell, HTC's website still markets Windows Mobile phones...

Guys, it's not like keyboards are dying out all together. Only HTC is out of the running.
Besides, we've still got a powerful device to be reckoned with
If we can get merged into the official CM tree, we will be the official most powerful QWERTY they've got. Not to mention we'll get updates for God knows how long
If anything this should spur us all on to dev even harder for the device and keep the keyboard legacy alive.

I think this news will have some folks picking up doubleshots off Craigslist. This news and the realization that the phone spec wars have gotten ridiculous. I'm holding on to my doubleshot for good.

First the locked bootloaders, then the buggy "bootloader unlockers" on their website, now this. Samsung should start manufacturing high-end QWERTY keyboards to pick up the demand.

This seems weird to me, because as far as I can remember, HTC has only released QWERTY phones with T-Mobile and Sprint. Those aren't the carriers to turn to if you want to shift a lot of phones, IMO.
I'm really hoping samsung releases a glide variant of the SGIII. I haven't seen anything about that in the leaks, so I'll likely end up using the DS until it isn't viable anymore and re-examine my options at that point.
