Hi everyone
I just wanted to know if someone has tried a prepaid sim on the mda and used the internet through EDGE. For some reason i get free internet and I just have $10 on my account with no charge to it. post if you get the same result.
Update: Was told about this Free WAP on T-Mobile!
But they talk about having free wap but its actually free gprs so you can use PIE, Opera for ppc,
Win media and listen to streams or anything that can use gprs (edge)
and also you can use modem link or internet sharing for your PC
Update 2: This will only work for US T-Mobile because of the updating to 3G of the network. So it may work for a limited time. < Refining EDGE
Update 3: Can also work on contract sim cards but i advise to use at own risk tmobile my start to charge you and it can get expensive if you do not have a data plan. I have been told that sometimes this may not work But will work on prepaid sim cards
Update 4: this will work on any phone but you need to have a different web browser like opera mini. It may also stop working but will work again if you disconnect and connect again right then or in a different time.
Settings to use: Cellular line (GPRS) and wap.voicestream.com

By the way update news flash t mobile is not hearing any of this i fact that stock is all that matters rember business thats what comes first i'm for you believe me pure respect but you would think i just got here.
\Ok t-mobile back end site

Plug this today if you are complianing this is a capped plan now what ever you do it doesn't matter. the compute will bill for what you have
Move this to the front so i don't have to deal with the hype
fact free net never went down
means no man down if no mms was being used or dialed in.
Fact i still cant get out on some phones i am cingular so t-mobile takes a bit longer for me
Plane straight t-zones $5.99 no mms cabs t-zones
216.155.165.50:8080 done
Plan t-zones online only catch 22 must change phone to a non pda.
I am OK with this move for one reason. the minute you make a call the system will flip your phone status back to the beautiful stock photo of what ever you have
If you don't understand me well guess what i don't look up when i type i do look up when i sign paychecks so just ask your friend moderator and this goes right into th45 move chart. 7 years and still cant typo as fast as i think
My theory is this i still am having problems with outh the cabs like im handi cap so that mens that the mms plays a role when you dial it in dont ask some else figure it out because our cabs work but i always change to 8080
the same source and my coaching argues with me on this stupid subject.
everyone here that has a opinion should also take into consideration that mathematics and reason does not make the world go round in the us its money homes and cars we will leave that discussion for one of my 100 seminars i power train at.
But 3g is already their but cingular never owned or should i say lease the heavier sites up top they bought the newbie national package. So the reason t mobile is not as deep is because cingular most likely resigned a separate deal that would not be part of a locked contract. So t mobile has to buy it on thier own.
But 3g only works in certain areas like blocks but when t hooks up it shakes financially t-mobile will wait until the market moves an inch the hype is not 3g for the 97 percent of the world only the fans. You will see more picture and video before speed is a priority.
hence the reason 2000 laptops are a nickel now. i see a ten quad coming why some body shooting the titanic nope i guarantee you some asshole in chicago saw that the glutens meaning the us will be picture crazy and share your picture and make your family trip a movie so they are making gaming look like a intermediate sport
good news better for the individual that wants a nuke for hardware cause last time i checked Intel core duo 2 were not $599. wait a month the good stuff will just get cheaper.
T-mobile could give to ****s about anybody back dooring a connection. Half of the reason it limited is to cut down on support the sales guy has no affiliation with the web and has no idea that his company is like the airlines trying to eliminate human error and involvement so thats why all cell phone company's act like mac users when u walk in. Mention the website your done.
You guys 2 ways to go media $9.95 or t-zones flip the phone online to a non pda chief go ahead and tear this up copy paste what ever get to the front so we don't up set the ladies.
I hope today we can 3 issues Dr shaps VOIP your smash and grab t-mobile issue and my feeling of un-appreciation. I like the fact that i am a member its a good thing i love roman history and i take that as a compliment. I thought junior wood chuck suited me.
But what do i know
except xda is not to be disrespected and no matter this is a good place.
ah screw it why should i change my style somebody eklse spell scheck this i need to go to frys and buy the left side make sure we handle this voip that works fine issue.
I like that one

Thanks for telling me
I read somewhere on howardforums about a week or so ago about this. From what I saw posted, this is only temporary because T-Mobile is making some upgrades on their data network.
I guess for the time being it’s just easier for them to open the whole data network to everyone while making whatever changes/upgrades.
My guess would be its some kind of upgrade to the internet access authentication system, and since that authentication system is down during the upgrade, the smoothest way to continue data access for the time being is to just give it to everyone. Just a guess though =P
I think its for there new 3G network. but for now ill enjoy the free service. Hope they dont charge when they finish there upgrade.

BTW do you have it working where u can use WIFI or GPRS without having to change your settings under connections everytime?

No way, they havent even gotton everyone who off the spectrum's yet.
I have a T-mobile prepaid sim and I get free internet. I don't think its edge speed though because it does take a while for the web pages to load. I think its wap speed. If you are getting edge speeds without paying, I guess your lucky. No charge.
it goes faster if you use it on a computer but when using it on the phone it goes slower. i read somewhere that edge has 4 time slots and could go at higher speeds if all 4 time slots are connected but thats in good weather and nothing between the phone and the tower. i think its in wikipedia.com that i read this.
I'm getting it too...wooohooo! Much slower than wireless but it's great to update weather and rss feeds. Thanks to everyone for all the info.

I get it free too!
I just posted this in the networking area ... I too am getting FREE connectivity .. without a prepaid card.
I do not have a data plan, am on a regular family plan, and am located in Salt Lake City, UT. I am also out of contract.
I flashed my MDA to Faria's AKU 3.3 8mb ROM. Set my carrier to "T-Mobile WAP", and voila! I get free access.
I freaked the first time it started up, and was downloading data.. thinking I was going to get a big fat bill.
I called customer service, and long story short, they told me that if I could connect, I was lucky, because it is a fluke, and I would be shortly disconnected thereafter. I was also told that I would NOT be charged.
So ... there you have it. Free (for a limited time) data access on T-Mobile.

I think the representatives dont know about the upgrade until there almost finish upgrading. as i been seeing its been a long time, maybe since 2005 that people have reported this. It makes me think that they are updating all of the network. that will also means that they will be taking out 3g phones and i could finally use my htc tytn on tmobile for internet instead of cingular.

hi
because i am moving around more and am less likely to use wifi hotspots i am thinking oif joining 3 mobiles generous PAYG 2.50 a week unlimited data and the other addon data stuff.
firstly, is anyone doing this and is it any good.
secondly, what is meant by "unlimited data" and how freely can you use up your unlimited browsing- any website?, any app?
that leads me to my last question of is IM and VOIP allowed or do they block the ports and are there any ways of getting around these- proxy maybe?
thanks, oh yeah, if you guys know any better deals or service providers then please let me know.
cheers
I'm on 3UK
I use 3UK's unlimited data plan on my contract phone and I'm always surfing the net, I get push email service from funambol and I'm constantly using applications like Google maps with GPS and TOM TOM 6 navigator which are heavy data users.
I don't use IM or VOIP because my free calls/texts per month are enough for my communications to remain free(ish) but I have had no problems with data use.
I believe there is a fair usage policy of about 1GB data per month but as long as you're not using the phone as a modem I doubt you'll exceed that, especially if you use a browser like Opera mini which uses a lot less data than PIE.
I don't think you'll find another data plan that can match 3UK's
and no I don't work for them,
I've tried to look else where because they lack quality phones but had no choice but to stay with them.
thanks for that, very useful insight.
i have also been search and found nothing can really stand up to 3 in terms of price and data.
it would be insteresting if someone new about what apps and voip/IM can be used over 3's network....
Slingplayer for ppc doesn't work with these data plans. They want to force you to pay for the X series.
i looked at the x series, but im not to sure on being in a contract,
i just want to buy a weeks addon whenever i know im going to be outside of a hotspot...
anyone know their minimum contract deal?
whats the deal with the 2.50 addon- do i get the 10 000 windows live messages and unlimited skype to skype minutes like in the x series??
cheers

Don't know if this is spamming as you asked the question, Mods feel free to erase or edit this post...
If you want more info on 3UK's deals, the pros and cons, go to http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/forumdisplay.php?f=120
All your questions will be answered there.
Again Mods if this post is unacceptable then please delete.
enough with the accusations of spammification!
if the mods find it spam, then they will "feel free" to remove it.
but another question popped into my head-
i took your advice and went to the 3g forum place and soon found out that 3 mobile dont allow there sim cards in 2g fones (mines a HTC excalibur) due to the roaming chargers they pay to orange/o2 becaue i would be constantly roaming on a non 3g network.
so is there any non 3g network which provide data which is unrestricted to how you use it like voip / IM??
cheers
EDIT:
looks like tmobile is the best 2g alternative to 3
Ok so I had a temp phone before I got my Tilt. Had unlimited internet on it and everything and when I switched to the Tilt I upgraded my internet plan to the $29.99.
Well seems like it didnt actually get onto the plan. My internet got cut off today and I called to figure out what was going on and it was because my bill was too much....i had racked up almost $3,200 in per kb internet usage.
Everything is being taken care of and I will not have to pay that, but I just figured I would just inform yall. If you have the incorrect internet plan you will get charged per kb used and AT&T will not contact you.
They really should contact you if anything on your plan is changed. It makes no sense that they do things like that and not tell you.
i got the temp phone for a week while waiting for my tmo contract to run out and when i called to get my number ported back over the lady went over everything again, plan info, add ons, etc.
thought it woulda been caught right about there...
I've been an ATT customer for 10 years and they consistently screw up billing, I have found if you call them they are pretty good about canceling additional charges.
Yeah thishas been talked about over at the kaiser forum. If you have a the 29.99 media max i beleive package you can have it as long as you dont abuse it. This will notify ATT that you are using the media max package that is not intended for PDA;s. They will then unleash gods **** on you which you will obviously fight off then buy a regular PDA package and att wins.
I must agree - I had a similar instance. They managed to cancel my original text messaging plan (1,000 for $10), and instead of putting the correct one back on (it wasn't offered anymore), they gave me whatever was close to it.
I logged in to check my status one night and noticed it. Turns out some idiot at the store changed my number by mistake, then realized it. They switched my plan back for me, as well as gave me a credit on my account, which gave me about 2 months free.
That's a couple of billing errors in that post. Data overages are capped at $99 and should in no way reach as high as $3,000 as long as you stay in the country.
Seriously, guys (and ladies if any in this thread)
There's something called personal responsibility and why you would think that a mere $30 media net plan which is intended for non-PDA phones would suffice your PDAs needs is ridiculous. If you read the literature, it is more than evident and more than clear.

I'm not so sure the average person gets the difference between PDA plans and MEdiaNET plans. In fact, if you go to a Premiere site and read the descripion for the Fuze, Samsung Blackjack II, and several otehr "PDA" phones it states in the description under Software and Connectivity "MEdia Net -- Wireless Internet access (designed for mobile devices)*" so why on earth would the average person believe that these devices cannot be used with MEdiaNET Unlimited plans? For thaty matter, why would you beluieve that it could not be used with an Unlimited MEdiaNET plan? What is it in the description that you understand that the rest of us do not that we are being "ridiculous" to think that these plans were intended for our Fuze?
To make things more confusing, AT&T began offering MEdiaNET unlimited plans (starting at $15) for devices with full keyboards including the Samsung Propel, Pantech Matrix and Slate. So is the average consumer suppose to understand that the price is tied to the underlying operating system? Windows Smartphone Edition is $15, WM6/6.1 is $30, Symbian is $15, Apple is $30, where does the insanity end?
ok, i'm confused now. The offical data plan for the fuze is the $30 plan. What happened with me is that i havent fully decided between the fuze and my e71, so i called in and added the e71 back to my account and added the $15 medianet unlimited plan. i've been switching between the phones (more time in my fuze now) and when i check online, it shows the fuze as my phone and the $15 medianet plan is added to it... should i be scared? do they check regularly? if they do catch it, will they just put me on the $30 plan or would they charge me pay per use? thanks

I've been using Medianet for about a month now, coming off of using it on a blackberry, and I haven't had any problems. I check my online account regularly to make sure there aren't any changes in the data plan.
So you are saying that I can use my Fuze with the $15/month media net package instead of the $30 one?
can you? yes. is it the correct plan? no. are you going to get caught? probably not. do i need to stop answering my own questions? yes
Here we go again, I guess I have wasted over 180 posts regardind this SAME situation. I have explained in great detail over and over again how and why this happens. Maybe the mods need to modify the search button to 100pt font.

Before you start were you have no clue, read the facts.....
1. As far as AT&T is concerned, for a PDA you must have PDA personal 30.00
2. You can get away with media net 15.00, but you need to trick AT&T.
3. As far as the Op's post goes, he must have had a idiot change his account.
4. Whenever a "upgrade" is performed the system WILL NOT allow media net to be carried over or placed on to a PDA.
So if you want to say "poor kd8" I will say to you... When you have worked with SBC>>>AMERITECH>>>CINGULAR>>>AT&T, and know every aspect of the system and how to trick it, and even publish that info for all the users here to save some cash, once you have done that and become what I have with AT&T, then talk SHI* to me, until then DONT. For those interested on how to trick the system SEARCH "kd8dns media net" if you still dont understand P.M. me.
And of course if you don't have any data plan on your account you will be charged PPU "pay per use" and that is 1c per KB.
There is a difference between PDA PERSONAL and MEDIA MAX
MEDIA MAX---Regular non PDA devices---15.00
PDA PERSONAL---PDA devices--------30.00
As most know I can answer any question regarding AT&T.
If it regards your bill or feature's, P.M. me
I can explain all the tips and tricks.
As far as overage ALL ALL ALL data overage is supposed to be capped at 200.00
but this also depends on if the correct device's IMEI is updated on your AT&T account. Your online account is CRAP, it means nothing. The only thing that is accurate about it, is the fact it can tell what LOCKED AT&T device you are using. DONT TRUST IT EVER!!!!!
And yes, you can use 15.00 media net on a FUZE, I have personally set this up for at least 40 members here!
Thank you for all of the info KD8DNS. if possible could you PM me? I would like to know more about setting up my Fuze on the $15/month plan. I already flashed my ROM to Da_G's ROM.
Here is how ya do it (AGAIN)
1. place sim in a non pda device.
2. Power on, dial *#06#,
3. Wright the imei number on paper.
4. Call customer care and tell them you lost your pda and need to update your account.
5. Have them remove PDA Personal, and add Media Net Unlim (15.00)
6. Say Thank you, and hang up.
7. Place sim back in PDA and don't use more than 3gb a month.
8. You can even tether with this. Just don't go crazy.
Any other question's FEEL FREE to p.m. me, As I am here to help.
Im getting a HD2 unlocked for christmas and Im trying to decide something. Which GSM Provider should I use
Which would be the best for me to get for free texts and internet? Orange's dolphin plan will give me free internet and 300 free texts when I top up £10 a month, but with O2 I get unlimited free texts and internet but with £15 a month, so which one would you guys recomend? The plus side to orange is Im already with them on my very old phone
or any other ideas?
I HAVE NEVER GOT 3G/HSPDA ON ANY HTC DEVICE WITH ORANGE EVEN THE ORANGE BRANDED ONES, GO WITH 02 lol
o2 pay as you go is a very good deal but there pay as go setup is a nightmare as they use a proxy to stop pop3, so you have the choice of Web&MMS or Web&Email... I use Web&Email by using a different setup.
Oh and unlimited means 500 megs lol "T&C" and can't mem exact text think 1300 or so...
A good deal @ mo is T-Mo they use same network connection for payasgo as do monthly, £10P/M for Unlimited Web "TAC" 40MB per day and again not sure on Text as found no info..
Just about to change most likely Tom

Yeah all these pay&go Unlimited deals have a terms & conditions apply.
Might be worth checking out 3 i have no idea what they do as can't get network @ home.
Yeah I'll check them out. Do you know how good the 3g reception is in the west midlands? Worcestershire to be exact. Also are there any problems with T-mobile internet, Ive read it wont let you watch youtube videos as it doesnt fall under the fair use policy, and do you have to install some web and walk manager thing?
So its
O2
Orange
T-mobile
3
Hmmm....
I spoke to a T-Mo representative the other day who said the only restriction is 40MB and they use the same connection setup as monthly so should be no probs with YouTube.
O2 place the same kinda terms no use of instant messenger, no email, no tethering blah blah and it goes on and on... But they use a proxy so can stop certain services like previously said i choose email over MMS and get full web access.
Best bet is to ask friends on networks or even look at there online coverage "not that it's always correct"

Ahh decisions decisions. None of my friends are on PAYG tmobile . So with TMo you can use all networking sites, skype, email, weather for htc hd2, teathering, all that kinda stuff right? I guess its by far the best bet, especailly for £5 less. And is 40mb the most you can get from any provider, is that considered quite alot in 3g internet terms?

I'm going to be popping into T-Mo tom, i know that teathering is in there restrictions but if they use same normal network then can't see an issue if you stick within 40MB, will ask as many Q's as possible.
40MB should be per day i used to use a dongle and top up about 1GB per month but that's just surfing and not much downloading ROMs etc...
3G is just the speed of connection it's all equates the same.
Will update with what they say as it's something that O2 stumped me on till twiddled about with connection settings.

Ok great thakns, funnily enough, Im going to town tomorrow to get a sim card as well. You say I cant do tethering with tmobile? D: wow that sucks, that was one of the things I really wanted to try out does everything else I listed work ?
Are there any providers who dont restrict you? :/
Went for t-mobile
I went and got there free sim deal. Heres some details
1gb/month (can run over, fair use policy)
Can tether (on the HD2 atleast)
£10 top up required
Same as what i got today along with a Touch Pro and yes teathering allowed as long as don't go over the amount 1GB P/M 40MB Per day

Yep, but you dont have to restrict it too 4omb a day, strictly speaking you COULD use 995mb in one day, as long as you spread the other 5 mb over the rest of the month

Also depends on the signal you can get. I'm in the East Midlands and have a rock solid 3g signal from home which none of the others can do. I've used TMob for ages now and browse YouTube, email etc a lot and have never had any problem. Their Solo 20 plan looked good and if it wasn't for the fact they upgraded me free to a HD2 I would have probably moved to that..
----
I slightly overbaked my reply hence I shall summarise. O2 PAYG web bolt on is absolutely the most terrible unusable thing ever and I wasted 7.50 on it!!!! O2 monthly is by far better. T-mobile PAYG is the only option for internet on this basis. Coming to that realisation makes most of my post redundant lol!!! but it might be of interest to those also considering contract.
---
just one note, but you cannot get a text and talk bundle on T-mobile AS WELL AS the unlimited texts and internet.
I think for PAYG T-mobile have the best deal for internet as long as you dont do much calling and just use internet.
If you call then their £20 package gives 300mins+unlimited texts. Then £2.50 for five days of internet access as it opts you out of the texts+internet deal.
I tried the O2 web bolt on with a PAYG sim card and the speeds and quality are dire. In fact it's best to use edge as the negotiation time to start a connection is much speedier than 3G. I only get a few hundre KB on O2 PAYG internet with full 3G. And also most times it simply just stalles after 50KB or so.
As for orange....people rave about them, but got a 3G orange PAYG card and it seems to have worse reception than O2 and T-mobile.
My reception between O2 and T-mobile seems to swing between the two, but orange seems to be consistently lower than either.
I would term O2 as maximin - it will maximise your 2G signal, and often gets 3G where T-mobile fails. However, where T-mobile picks up a signal O2 will be a bar or two behind.
T-mobile is maximax - it will more often give you full 3G bars, but will also disappear much sooner.
I think the T-mobile network from testing is less congested - and their image proxy can be avoided I believe.
For monthly contracts O2 web is good however.
For PAYG T-mobile is by far the best provider.
I will personally go for O2 monthly contract. But if I were going PAYG it would be T-mobile.
For contract:
Orange have the best monthly deal - 1200mins, UT, 500MB, £30 phone for £30pm.
O2: 600mins, 1000T, UWeb, £100 phone, £30pm
T-mobile: 900mins, UT, Uweb, £180 phone, £25pm.
For PAYG:
T-mobile: internet+texts = £10. 25p/10p calls/texts; £20 = 300mins+UTexts
O2: £10 for internet+ 300texts, 25/10p calls/texts; £8.00 = 50mins
Vodafone: £20 is 300mins and 3000 texts, no web package.
Orange: £10 - unlimited internet...well, 50MB a month!!!! how shiste is that?
If you roam to europe however, O2 wins....but its PAYG internet is useless.
There is another option - SIM only 30 day rolling contract...
Sorry I should have asked for this thread to be closed ages ago :3
I went with Tmobile, and I love it, very good signal and plenty of bandwith for what I actually need to do .

HI,
I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, the 7" version with 3G (P3100) in the UK, it is unlocked.
At first I intended to continue to use my Orange SIM that allowed 250mb of free use. It soon became apparent that this would not be enough.
So I signed a rolling one month contract with Three, allow all you can eat data for your smart phone. However, 56MB later (day 3) they switched the data off, the message is saying that I have moved my SIM from my mobile phone and put it in a tablet, this is not what it is designed to do.
My trouble is, if I go for the "Broadband" options then I'll not be able to use the voice facility that the phone offers. I have spent about 45 minutes speaking to Three but they cannot offer a solution. As far as they are concerned it is a tablet and the only option is Mobile Broadband with no voice capability.
Any Idea, custom ROM so they cannot detect the Tablet as a Tablet?
Oh, if I put the SIM back into a smartphone then the data connection works again.
Thanks
Kev
Hi
I had the exact same problem. I came from the Galaxy note 2(i needed a bigger screen) and so i put my contact sim card in and had the same problem. I was not happy, so i called them and went straight to the technical team and explained that i needed to use my sim in this device.
My argument was that it had the exact same capabilities as the note and that the note was classed originally as a small tablet.
Whilst i understood that the WiFi version of the tab 2 WAS just a tablet, the 3 G version had gsm radios just like a phone. I escalated the complaint to the senior technical team and put pointed out that the 2 devices were no different and as a paying customer with a Samsung device that was SPECIFICALLY made to be used as a phone, that 3 as a network should lift the restriction on my 3G allowance. Moreover, they then relented AND admitted that they were looking to relax their guidekines on this matter.
I pointed out that every version of Samsung's tablets has a 3G version with full phone capabilities, and that so many people were using these as their sole devices.
I advise you go back to them, go straight to the technical team, argue there case, and ask for it to be escalated if need be. Please feel free to quote my own situation in this matter stating that I'm a customer and they allowed me to use my sim fully in my tab 2
Keep us posted
WoW, this gives me a little hope.
I spent another hour on the phone yesterday, I spoke to a member of the technical team and he seemed very knowledgeable. Even telling me the cheapest option to get full broadband (but no voice). Even went on to say that other providers in the UK did do voice and data that would work in the tab 2.
However, I did pick up one blatant lie, he said that the mobile phone sim would not allow streaming, HTTPS, or +18 websites, ensuring me that these sites just would not load. Well, my tab was loading these, I streamed live TV from a field in the middle of no where lol.
I'm tempted now to write a letter because I'm getting no where on the phone, I'd like to point out some inconsistencies on their website. I.e. their choose the right sim wizard. Unless you have an iPad it guides you to the sim I purchased. Also the pictures, the tablet and smartphone are the same, for broadband it is a picture of a laptop. The reason for going to this length is that they are telling me they can't even swap my contract, I must give 30days notice!
I'll ring them again on Friday, for now I'm back to orange lol.
Thanks for your input,I'll definitely keep you updated as I expect this issue to get worse as more phone / tablets or phablets become available.
Kev
Well done, hope it works out for you
I'm only with 3 on the remainder of my contact ( 9 months) then going to switch to 30 day rolling contract. They give the most data out of all of the networks, even if their customer service is rubbish.
It might be worth persisting with your case, my question to them was how can my tablet be a tablet when it can receive calls, and the very fact i was talking to them on it made them agree with me.
Don't let them lie to you or try and pass any false information onto you. Ask to speak to the senior tech team, as when i spoke to the tech team, they were basically useless and couldn't really answer. I asked for a more senior team and they escalated the case promising I'd here back in 72 hrs which i did.
Stick with it mate, orange data allowance is crummy, and 3 will give in in you persist
Keep me posted
Since tomorrow is the day I'll ring Three again, can you give me a clue as to what they did to get yours working? Was there any setting changes? The last guy I talked to gave me some new settings, they did not work but it was food for thought. I.e. the APN setting etc.
Kev
OK, so the latest call is another 20 minutes long where i keep repeating what the issue is with a nice sounding girl telling me she understands. Although the lack of verbal communication related to the issue from her part clearly told me otherwise. This was clarified when towards the end of the conversation she said, "so you need me to blocked the IMEI from our system?".
My shear frustration at this point lead to her raising a call for her manager to call me back - let's hope they understand lol.

Well, I don't give up easily but this has beat me. There seems no way of getting round this with Three. The mobile team want to put you through to broadband team saying its clearly a tablet, the broadband team just put you back through to the mobile team as they don't support voice devices. Even the senior team leaders wont have it, they just keep saying you've clearly been told you can't use this device on our mobile network.
I'm not sure how you (pglandscapes) got this resolved but I'd keep quiet and not change anything about your plan. For anyone else thinking this is an option clearly is it not, trust me I have now tried everything and then some, in fact they are now getting angry at me for keep ringing them LOL.
To recap, I was trying to use a Three Mobile Phone SIM in a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" 3G version so I could continue to use the full voice capabilities of the device, very quickly Three blocked the data use to this device although placing the SIM back in a smartphone made it work again.
I'm back with orange, canary 10 (SIM only) , 1 month plan which seems to work fine.
I hate to say it but I may try the Three Broadband 10GB monthly version, I'm told I'll loose voice features of the phone but I'm just curious now. Wont I look a fool though if that works perfectly LOL.

Maybe Virgin
Well, the latest update is Virgin say that support the Samsung P3100 better known as the Galaxy Tab 2 7" with 3G (via online chat and validated by the settings you can download from their website).
I ordered the SIM and its 90 pence cheaper per month on all you can eat.
Does anyone know if Virgin is really just Three? Just worried that they will be the same :crying:
Kev
Truly baffled!
To be honest, one of my conversations lasted over 1.5 hours!!
I simply stated originally that my data allowance had been blocked and i wished to speak to someone in a senior position.
My hook was i was paying for the top tariff and that 3 weren't fulfilling their part of the contact as a supplier by limiting my data allowance in a device that had complete gsm capabilities. I specifically asked them to define the difference between the galaxy note 2 and the galaxy tab 2.
Their reply was that one was a tablet and one was a phone.
I questioned how this could be defined to which they answered on one device i could make calls and send text messages and in the other i couldn't.
When i pointed out that both devices had EXACTLY the same functionality they were stumped!
I then asked them to differentiate between the iPhone at 3.5 inches, and the galaxy note at 5.5 inches, a whole 2 inches bigger!
They're reply was that they were both classed as phones and that one simply had a larger screen. I pointed out that the Dell streak was released as a tablet and that was 5 inches, and yet had full phone capabilities.... they then went quiet!
I then pointed out that a pure tablet such as the nexus 7 or the iPad, even the 3g versions don't have gsm radios, thus making them tablets. However, the ones with gsm radios can be classed as large phones, and that the factor of the larger screen cannot be used as a defining factor if said device has full gsm functionality!
They conceded the point and even said they were" looking to change their legislation on this matter as the lines were becoming finer all the time regarding such devices!"
THAT is how i got it. In truly sorry it hasn't worked for you

To be fair, this applies to us all doesn't it? If I were a turkey I know I wouldn't be making many plans for the future...
Have you looked at GiffGaff? They have a £12 Goodybag (effectively a monthly rolling contract - you choose whether to buy another goodybag each month). This provides unlimited data plus unlimited texts and SMS.
Does it work in a tablet? Check out this thread in their forums. This seems to confirm that:
if a device can make and receive calls and texts out of the box without modification then it is classed as a phone and can be used with goodybags

Best you check with them to confirm, but it looks like you might be okay with the P3100.

Cheers buddy, I had spotted this as an option, and if it does not workout with Virgin I will OK at this next.
I actually took online help with virgin and copied the convo of them saying they fully supported the p3100 so if this does not work out it should be easier to get out of the contract. Lol
I've cancelled the Three contract today, they seemed amazed that my Orange SIM worked OK in it. I get the impression they don't really believe what I,m saying. Probably think I'm trying to scam them and really want to use there all you can eat in an iPad.
Oh well.
Kev
Taking a closer look at giffgaff it would appear this could be a very good solution if it does not workout for me with Virgin. I actually like how open their service seems to be, taking a look at this link shows that the usage can be fair and reasonable. Frankly, if someone is using more than 3gb a day then they deserve to be kicked off because they ruin the service for others.
http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Learn-giffgaff-Top-Tips/Unlimited-Mobile-Internet-with-a-goodybag/ta-p/5577838
There are a few people that have had issues on giffgaff with similar phones, one person was reporting being blocked and stated they had yet to use 1 gig in the 3 weeks they had been connected, so that's a bit worrying. It looks like the end result was they terminated their account. But who knows, maybe they were abusing the system as there are not many reports like that and many others from people with similar devices reporting no issues.
Looking at my stats so far, i'd be amazed if I used more than a gig a month once I'd got the new device excitement out the way lol.
I'll keep this thread updated with how I get on.
Update: Sent email to giffgaff to see if they will indeed support this device as a large smartphone.

OK - Here's the latest.
On the 24th Dec I applied for a Virgin SIM (T-Mobile / EE backbone)
On the 25th Dec I applied for a GiffGaff SIM (O2 backbone).
I also sent an email to GiffGaff asking them to confirm they would support the device on their £12 goodybag (250 mins, unltd txt, unltd mobile data).
Both companies said they would send an email when the SIM had been dispatched - I love a good response test
27th, GiffGaff confirm by email that they have no issues with the device as long as I dont exceed there fair usage policy (1GB per hour / 3GB per day) along with some other fair usage which they did not actually stipulate but I expect this is P2P (torrents) etc.
27th, GiffGaff dispatch the SIM
29th, Giff Gaff SIM arrives and I credit it with the £12 goodybag, 5 minutes later the account is activated and I'm rock and rolling
30th Dec, time for some GiffGaff tests (for easy I'll add as a picture)
Conclusion, assuming GiffGaff don't cut me off for steaming and there is no reason to suggest they will based on my tests then I'm happy. The tests show I could watch TV for about 6 hours per day (even at maximum wifi type speeds which I doubt I would ever get over GiffGaff), at the maximum GiffGaff rate recorded of 180MB per Hour I could get 16 hours of Live TV before I need worry. I think if someone needs more than this they need a better life not a better service provider
Oh - Not heard anything from Virgin at all LOL.

Well done mate, really pleased it's worked or for you!
I just thought I'd add one final update to this thread before marking it as solved.
I put a very comprehensive letter together and sent registered post to Three. I pointed out some inconsistencies on their website and at point of sale.
They called me and said they had reviewed my device and see that it is a little confusing from a customers point of view and that they don't actually have a package that is dedicated to the phone & tablet "phablet" market. They will look to address these issues very soon, and if you read this they may already have done so.
As a result they have waved all charges and although I will receive a final invoice they will waver this too. They did say that I could continue to use the phone service until it was ceased and I would not be charged.
The Virgin SIM eventually arrived yesterday, but as I am now non GiffGaff I shall not be activation that.
GiffGaff, I guess much of this is personal choice and depends on the service levels in the areas you visit. I will say this though, I'm very happy. GiffGaff using the O2 network has a great signal, as they have both 2G and 3G it works well indoors too (for those places where there is no free WiFi).
I sit here with a full signal capable of stream TV from my arm chair. Not that I would, obviously I'd use WiFi, but capable none the less.
Got there in the end.

A very big Pat on the back for sticking with it mate. Well done indeed for persevering with this.
Good luck with gifgaf and happy new year!.
As a side note, I've just installed cm10 on my p3100.... loving it!
Highly recommended
My first daft question of the year lol
I think CM10 is a 3rd party ROM, but why would people choose it over Android? What are the deciding factors for you?

For me I wanted the closest vanilla aosp experience I could get, and this for me is it.
I love the nexus 7, but I need both camera and phone, so this is the only tablet I know that has them.
Running Samsung's version of jelly beam 4.1.1 was great but, it was filled with so much bloat ware that with just a few processes running, it still lagged a little.
I looked at cm10.1 and thought" wow, stock jelly bean", so I took the plunge.
Interestingly enough running the touchwiz, my tab would regularly have around 45 processes running in the background. With this it has around 24!!
So much slicker and smoother.
I also wanted all the cool jelly beam stuff like the camera with the editing, daydream, the notifications shades, basically everything that made it as stock as possible.
I didn't want to run 3rd party launchers and tons of different apps, I wanted my OS to be this good!
Anyway, those were my deciding factors, other people may have different ones.
Hope this helps
