Anyone on 3 MOBILE UK USING DATA?? - General Topics

hi
because i am moving around more and am less likely to use wifi hotspots i am thinking oif joining 3 mobiles generous PAYG 2.50 a week unlimited data and the other addon data stuff.
firstly, is anyone doing this and is it any good.
secondly, what is meant by "unlimited data" and how freely can you use up your unlimited browsing- any website?, any app?
that leads me to my last question of is IM and VOIP allowed or do they block the ports and are there any ways of getting around these- proxy maybe?
thanks, oh yeah, if you guys know any better deals or service providers then please let me know.
cheers

I'm on 3UK
I use 3UK's unlimited data plan on my contract phone and I'm always surfing the net, I get push email service from funambol and I'm constantly using applications like Google maps with GPS and TOM TOM 6 navigator which are heavy data users.
I don't use IM or VOIP because my free calls/texts per month are enough for my communications to remain free(ish) but I have had no problems with data use.
I believe there is a fair usage policy of about 1GB data per month but as long as you're not using the phone as a modem I doubt you'll exceed that, especially if you use a browser like Opera mini which uses a lot less data than PIE.
I don't think you'll find another data plan that can match 3UK's
and no I don't work for them,
I've tried to look else where because they lack quality phones but had no choice but to stay with them.

thanks for that, very useful insight.
i have also been search and found nothing can really stand up to 3 in terms of price and data.
it would be insteresting if someone new about what apps and voip/IM can be used over 3's network....

Slingplayer for ppc doesn't work with these data plans. They want to force you to pay for the X series.

i looked at the x series, but im not to sure on being in a contract,
i just want to buy a weeks addon whenever i know im going to be outside of a hotspot...
anyone know their minimum contract deal?
whats the deal with the 2.50 addon- do i get the 10 000 windows live messages and unlimited skype to skype minutes like in the x series??
cheers

Don't know if this is spamming as you asked the question, Mods feel free to erase or edit this post...
If you want more info on 3UK's deals, the pros and cons, go to http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/forumdisplay.php?f=120
All your questions will be answered there.
Again Mods if this post is unacceptable then please delete.

enough with the accusations of spammification!
if the mods find it spam, then they will "feel free" to remove it.
but another question popped into my head-
i took your advice and went to the 3g forum place and soon found out that 3 mobile dont allow there sim cards in 2g fones (mines a HTC excalibur) due to the roaming chargers they pay to orange/o2 becaue i would be constantly roaming on a non 3g network.
so is there any non 3g network which provide data which is unrestricted to how you use it like voip / IM??
cheers
EDIT:
looks like tmobile is the best 2g alternative to 3

UK T-mobile new unlimited GPRS tariffs!

first forgive me if allready posted ( have done a search but found nothing )
there been much disscusion at other forums, started 1st april, check out, http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=plans_webnwalk
its either combined with a new tarrif or available as a £7.50 to an exsisting tarrif.
suddenly my wizard becomes more useable with such a bargin price!
GREAT!!
Thanks for that man, i just called T-Mobile up and asked them about it and yes its true! for only £7.50 i can go online all day on gprs/umts for no extra charge! i've just cancelled my dumb gprs allowance i used to have (£5 for 6MB) It works on any Flext or relax price plan so anyone who is thinking of it....go for it!!
Standard charge for T-Mobile is: 1MB=£7.50........... ouch now thats bad!
don't even think of going online without the web n walk upgrade!
I've got it too, only just got my Wizard and was excited about having Wi-Fi access to the net, but this pretty much makes Wi'Fi redundant for me!
great, and even better is ,
if you get the new contract with them now, not even you got 25% off for traiff, and also the unlimited GPRS..
so, you only pay for 5.63 pounds for unlimited GPRS..
What if I bought a contract with the 25% off thena dded the GPRS? Willth ey give me it at 25% off do ya reckon?
I only bought my Vario from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago, and now they introduce this! I want my 25% off GPRS
Hopefully other operators will start to follow suit.
I'd pay £10 a month for GPRS/3G access on O2...
just to add around the 19th april there adding a faster pro version £9.99 per month 2 gb limit, can be used on laptops, 3g etc
Are there multiple speeds of GPRS?

some one correct me if im wrong,
but 2g is up to 56kbps
then there 2.5g which a normal 2g phone can handle , thats 384kbps
and then 3g thats 2Gbps
It's quite simple...
For £7.99 (Web'n'Walk) you get unlimited data, but with a fair use policy that prohibits services such as VOIP, filesharing and streaming. It also does not permit you to use your phone as a modem for your PC/laptop. I *believe* that UMTS on this service is capped at 128Kbps.
For £9.99 (Web'n'Walk Pro) you get data limited to 2Gb/month, but with no limitations on how you use that data (i.e. you're allowed streaming, VOIP, filesharing, and permittted to connect your phone to your laptop/PC). I *believe* the speed cap is lifted, allowing full 384kbps UMTS service.
Just revising this... I now believe that regular Web'n'Walk offers speeds up to 384kbps, while Web'n'Walk PRO will potentially offer access to the UMTS-HSDPA standard which T-Mobile are planning to roll out across their network, with potential speeds up to 1.8Mbps (which fits nicely with their "upto 5x faster" statement).
how do they know if I'm streaming radio off the net?

TCP/UDP ports, MCAST, protocol filtering?
There are so many ways to block unwanted traffic...
Hal.
I signed up to a 12 month contract with 02 UK just two days ago. ****ty 4M for £5 is rediculus but XDA Exec for £150 is a good offer. Any ideas if O2 plans on competing with this at all?
wifi through AP allowed too in UK?
Hi there,
In the Netherlands TMO claims you can use Web'nWalk for their wifi AP's too. No use on my magician , but is it allowed in the UK too? & with that you'll never be far from a proper internet connection .
M
Btw I'm not exactly a fair user, always >40MB & in january I topped >420MB & never heard anything
changing tarifs
For anyone already with Tmobile but withot the webnwalk tarif - email customer services (free) via the tmobile website and they will switch it for you.
I realised I was paying too much and asked for some info. A really nice lady emailed me all the avaiable tarifs and I changed to a flext tarif webnwalk.
I have gained 20 minutes talk time and unlimitedish GPRS and cut my bill in the process.
I hope other operators do NOT copy T-Mobile..... this is just a marketing scam as far as I am concerned. Don't get me wrong, the price is amazing, but there is a BIG but:
Not only are you limited to the 2GB Usage (which is actually not all that bad), you can not use VoIP (to get free UK phone calls: www.sipdiscount.com using SJphone), you can not even use MSN Messenger, Yahoo, Gtalk, or AIM!!! (no Agile Messenger)!!! OMG
'Use of Voice over Internet Protocol and Messaging over Internet Protocol is prohibited by T-Mobile. If use of either or both of these services is detected T-Mobile may terminate all contracts with the customer and disconnect any SIM cards and/or web ‘n’ walk cards from the T-Mobile network.'
There are plans to lift the IM limitation at the end of the year. We want all ports unblocked!!!
By the way, your DSL or Cable connection is now obsolete due to T-Mobile's innovation: 20Mb Wireless!! Awesome. Can't wait

Bell $7 unlimited data plan for touch

So... about that $7 unlimited plan with bell...
WHOO DOGGY... what a story.
so my friend is the cell phone guy at future shop. one of the other employees there just got a touch with that plan. accoring to them and their rep. the plan is unlimited "mobile browser" but for the touch the mobile browser is data use with the exception of tethering. now we looked at the touch, there was no special browser or anything, just IE like the Titan. so...
i have had issues with my phone for over a year... im on my 5th phone (under future shop warranty) and im still dropping calls and calls dont come it. im 100% sure its not the phone.. im on my 2nd Titan and still... anyways... in a pissed off rant with customer service on saturday about all this i asked if i could get the unlimited $7 data plan offered with the touch. i said i would pay for it, i just want it. they said it was not an issue and it was done. i had it.
now before i saw the post about this plan, i heard all over the radio in kamloops here that the touch comes with a $7 unlimited data plan. and the bell dealers backed this up. so i browsed the internet all night. was streaming video and music etc. i checked my data useage through TCARE... i waited 2 hrs and texted TCare... it came back as 2.9 mb.. which is what i had before i started browsing. perfect... so i downloaded via torrent a 10 mb file... waited 4 hrs or so.. checked TCare.. still at 2.9 mb...so i proceed with some serious downloading cause i was sure it was all good now...
that was this weeked.
so this morning i checked with bell on another billing issue.. when she saw my current charges for this month she choked, coughed and sputtered, and put me on hold to talk to her manager. I had racked up $19,000 in data use in a weekend. this was because data devices do not have the capability to use the mobile browser service.
after a few hours of "dealing" with bell. they realized this was their **** up and will fix my account.
fair warning to any bell customers (or potential bell customers) regarding this plan.

So where is the scam, they fixed the problem didn't they? I will also add that you gigabyte downloaders ruin it for everyone. All you can eat doesn't mean you can or have to stuff your jacket pockets, you know
How exactly is this a scam? As much as I hate bell, they realized they made a mistake and they fixed it. I assume you didn't pay a penny of that $19000 bill?
This is standard fare for bell customer service. No news here...
the scam is that they are offering a $7 Unlimited data plan that isnt a data plan. its mobile browser. and data devices cant use mobile browser, they use data. and how do us "gigabyte downloaders" ruin it for everyone? unlimited is just that, with out limits... i should be free to do with it as i please. if i wasnt going to use an unlimited ammount of bandwith.. why would i get an unlimited plan. yes they did credit me the $19,000. but bell is now telling me there is no unlimited data.

That is a fact you did not include in your original story and I hope someone can come back a confirm it. Your limitless comment makes me glad they shut you down
I'm not going to argue about the definition of "unlimited". but this is just the same old crap they pulled with broadband DSL. Advertise "unlimited bandwidth" but with a maximum cap per month.
You should take them to court since they obviously advertise "unlimited mobile browser", but they make no attempts to define what "mobile browser" is. As we all know, http data/torrent data/ftp data/etc.... is all the same and everyone that signs up is signing under the pretense that it's unlimited data since they have at least clearly said that mobile browser is *not* "only WAP data".
I saw this coming from a mile away. I bet they left the definition of "mobile browser" open so that they can arbitrarily cut off the heavy users like you. Good riddence IMO. who in their right mind is going to d/l a torrent via a cellphone connection? I bet you didn't even limit your upload limit so you were uploading constantly 24/7...

The mobile browser thing is something that came up this morning. All weekend they have been advertising here in town "Unlimited DATA". On the radio, in the stores, no mention of mobile browser. Everyone is being told that this plan is unlimited data. That is why I said its a scam. The fact that I went about using the plan's "unlimited" feature is beside the point. Had I only used 100mb i would have been billed for that 100mb. The point of this thread is that Bell is offering an unlimited data plan, which is really unlimited mobile browser, for a device that cannot use mobile browser. Please stop flaming my excessive data useage, when thats not the issue at hand.
Well.. bell just called me regarding an issue I am having with text messages. This guy sounded like he knew what he was doing... so I asked him about this data issue. The Bell touch has been provisioned to connect to the internet VIA the mobile browser connection. The connection is the same as data, but it just connects to the $7 unlimited mobile browser plan, and doesnt bill data. That way they can offer unlimited data on the phone for now until they get unlimited data plans. Its been provisioned that way from HTC. The idiot who signed me up should have known this and not signed me up. Quick ending to the story.
If you go to this Bell page and click on the ALL tab then the Touch, a sub menu on the left says "Email & Internet" for 7$ a month.
EDIT: Then you've got the Media who, as usual, is completely confused and confuses everyone.

Actually, I think the fact that clowns are telling some guy that his unlimited surfing shouldnt be unlimited is laughable.
The OP does have a legitimate concern (though he went about it completely wrong).
Facts:
1) There is a promo for the HTC touch w/ a $7 unlimited "data" plan
2) OP misuses the unlimited data/mobile browser plan
3) OP gets pissed off when bell charges him $$$
4) Bell reversed the charges, but in the end, Bell's Unlimited "data" plan is not really "unlimited" nor is it for "data".
EDIT: purelitium pointed out the OP was using a titan. The $7 plan clearly says this only applies to non-PDA phones (which includes the touch), so I'm in the wrong. Thanks!
No he doesn't have any legitimate concern
1. He was trying to use a feature designed only for the Bell Touch(Vogue) on his Titan.
2. I've never seen it advertised as "unlimited data", it's unlimited Mobile Browsing, there is a difference.
3. Bell figured out their mistake, corrected it.
I don't see where there's a problem.
I'm on the $7 plan on Bell, and I've had no problems, because I'm using the proper equipment (Touch).

(for compatibility reasons and otherwise) stay the HELL away from samsung phones... (oh my word). i think u can download to the external storage... but even if you can't (i haven't gotten to try)... pcmobile is the best for any person that doesn't talk their ass off (strictly short business calls) and looking to browse their internet and check the mail constantly... read wikipedia... facebook... google maps... msn... etc. youtube is sweet... it's like your one stop video place on the net anyways, so who cares if you can't do serious torrent sh!t or approach the entire pc replacement department

There was nothing with what chancet said, other than (based on common sense) 'ruining' it for other people by having torrents, streaming non-stop 24/7. While I do agree that one should respect other users and understand that hogging network space is just going to cause other users to experience crapper service, the issue here is that Bell is stating that the plan is "unlimited" when in fact, it is not.
THAT's the main issue. I don't understand why people are so quick to defend Bell (or any company) as if they're going to get a reward or something.
Plain and simple, if using data isn't unlimited, don't advertise it as UNLIMITED.
Also, just because those of you 'experts' check out the forums 24/7 and know all the details, doesn't mean the average joe does! So you may know that they "never" advertised it as unlimited DATA but rather unlimited browser. Well I suppose the average joe is supposed to know the difference between data and browser? Let's see we have bad Bell reps who don't seem to know what they're talking about and do a good job of misinforming others (due to lack of supervision or simply lack of training). We have radio stations, newspapers, all calling it unlimited DATA (do a google search), etc. Please don't speak as if your knowledge due to being on these forums (as well as the fact that you're generally INTERESTED in telecommunications stuff) is the same as what the average user should know.
I bet if a users sends 10,000 emails or something Bell would still send em a letter for 'abuse' even though they are technically following the 'do's and don'ts' for unlimited mobile browser (no streaming, VOIP etc.).
It's definitely not unlimited. Stop advertising it as unlimited!

Please recommend a UK network to me!

Hi there
I have decided to tentatively upgrade from my Nokia E90 to a HTC Touch Pro - I'm keeping the E90 for now so I can move back if I don't like it.
I will be using the HTC Touch pro for a small amount of calls and texts, but a fair amount of data and internet, so I want that unlimited. Also, I'll be using a VoIP client (probably Skype as I have a SkypeOut subscription) and I want to make sure my network isn't blocking it.
I've searched the net and here quite extensively and there's conflicting reports on what is and what isn't allowed, hence me asking directly, so sorry if it has already been answered.
Also, I'll be buying it on contract so the best deals would appeal to me! I find buying direct from the network usually gets you the best support so what's out there for the Touch Pro right now?
And I'll also be swapping Sims from time to time so the phone has to be unblocked.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Stephen
Although I am generally happy with Vodafone as a network for call and coverage, I think their data packages arent up to much. I could be wrong but I'm sure the best they offer is the 'unlimited' data package, which in reality has a 500mb 'fair usage' limit attached. I also seem to recall that calls on VOIP arent included in this. It has been a while since I checked the tariffs, but thought I'd pass on my limited knowledge
Thanks
Anybody else running one in the UK and has an unlimited data tariff that is Skype friendly?

$10 unlimited media max web question

i got a question for all you guys using the (dumb phone) internet on your Fuze.. i have got an unlimited messaging family plan and they said i could add the unlimited web to a dumb phone not my fuze... so i gave them the imei number off an old razr and now they have my fuze and the razr on the account on the same line... i told them i only use data on the razr and i use wifi on the fuze... so my question is (i know this has been talked about before) am i all good or can they tell the difference between when im using the razr for data or the fuze for data.... the only reason im asking this is because they know im running the fuze on the same line also and i dont know if they can tell the difference?
They can't tell the difference. I've done exactly the same thing as you stated above and I've been using it this way for months now with no issues.
your good
yea - same here - got the media max 200 and use my phone to skype, slingbox, modem when on road trip ever few weeks and log into my camera system to view live streaming videos - use about 150K KB a month on average.
You got no worries!
sDs
I have done the same thing. I have Unlimited Texting and Web for $30
Just make sure to swap phones a day before calling AT&T about your account. And make sure that they didn't take your plan off once in a while. I do streaming download mp3's, P2P and more.
thanks guys... thats what i figured... i just wanted piece of mind that i was going to be ok using it.... and i only use it for light browsing anyway... but should i switch and use the razr sometimes or am i good just using my fuze 100% of the time
you can use ur fuze 100% percent of the time. this has always been a grey area for at&t but u paying for some data is better then none at all. i too have done the same for years now. its hard to seperate who uses what in terms of kb. yes pda's use more data but with the likes of celluar video and other at&t media features, even regular devices can use a lot of data. enjoy!
I've kept the same Data Package for years. I upgraded to a Fuze from a Samsung Blackjack. The sales guy told me some BS line like, "well the Fuze requires a faster data package because the Fuze is a faster device and the data on the cheap plan can't keep up."
I actually don't have any other phone's IEMI number on my account other then my Fuze. When I call Customer service or visit a store, they say I need the bigger plan but I tell them that it is working perfectly fine and to leave it alone.
ha ha i love squeaking by... these big carriers make hella dough... i just think its bull that both plans work exactly the same but they charge you more for having a more expensive device
Now will I get 3G service on my FUZE if I gave ATT an IMEI of edge/2G dumb phone?

Probably but I think MEdia Net would be cheaper
Yeah you will get 3g no problem, as long as its in your area.. There is nothing different between the pda plan and the medianet plan..
I pitched a fit to ATT one day about it, and I was told becuase my phone had a keyboard they want me to use the more expensive plan.. I guess because I can type in websites faster lol =/
You guys who use medianet, how much data do you average a month that you use? I think I use in the range of 200-300MB, I try to limit though to stay under radar.. lol
**edit**
Also not 100% sure on this, if you will get billed extra rather, but make sure you are using wap.cingular for your gateway and not ISP.cingular.. Supposedly you could get charge every money if you use the isp one.

[Resolved] UK GSM Provider: Orange or O2?

Im getting a HD2 unlocked for christmas and Im trying to decide something. Which GSM Provider should I use
Which would be the best for me to get for free texts and internet? Orange's dolphin plan will give me free internet and 300 free texts when I top up £10 a month, but with O2 I get unlimited free texts and internet but with £15 a month, so which one would you guys recomend? The plus side to orange is Im already with them on my very old phone
or any other ideas?
I HAVE NEVER GOT 3G/HSPDA ON ANY HTC DEVICE WITH ORANGE EVEN THE ORANGE BRANDED ONES, GO WITH 02 lol
o2 pay as you go is a very good deal but there pay as go setup is a nightmare as they use a proxy to stop pop3, so you have the choice of Web&MMS or Web&Email... I use Web&Email by using a different setup.
Oh and unlimited means 500 megs lol "T&C" and can't mem exact text think 1300 or so...
A good deal @ mo is T-Mo they use same network connection for payasgo as do monthly, £10P/M for Unlimited Web "TAC" 40MB per day and again not sure on Text as found no info..
Just about to change most likely Tom

Yeah all these pay&go Unlimited deals have a terms & conditions apply.
Might be worth checking out 3 i have no idea what they do as can't get network @ home.
Yeah I'll check them out. Do you know how good the 3g reception is in the west midlands? Worcestershire to be exact. Also are there any problems with T-mobile internet, Ive read it wont let you watch youtube videos as it doesnt fall under the fair use policy, and do you have to install some web and walk manager thing?
So its
O2
Orange
T-mobile
3
Hmmm....
I spoke to a T-Mo representative the other day who said the only restriction is 40MB and they use the same connection setup as monthly so should be no probs with YouTube.
O2 place the same kinda terms no use of instant messenger, no email, no tethering blah blah and it goes on and on... But they use a proxy so can stop certain services like previously said i choose email over MMS and get full web access.
Best bet is to ask friends on networks or even look at there online coverage "not that it's always correct"

Ahh decisions decisions. None of my friends are on PAYG tmobile . So with TMo you can use all networking sites, skype, email, weather for htc hd2, teathering, all that kinda stuff right? I guess its by far the best bet, especailly for £5 less. And is 40mb the most you can get from any provider, is that considered quite alot in 3g internet terms?

I'm going to be popping into T-Mo tom, i know that teathering is in there restrictions but if they use same normal network then can't see an issue if you stick within 40MB, will ask as many Q's as possible.
40MB should be per day i used to use a dongle and top up about 1GB per month but that's just surfing and not much downloading ROMs etc...
3G is just the speed of connection it's all equates the same.
Will update with what they say as it's something that O2 stumped me on till twiddled about with connection settings.

Ok great thakns, funnily enough, Im going to town tomorrow to get a sim card as well. You say I cant do tethering with tmobile? D: wow that sucks, that was one of the things I really wanted to try out does everything else I listed work ?
Are there any providers who dont restrict you? :/
Went for t-mobile
I went and got there free sim deal. Heres some details
1gb/month (can run over, fair use policy)
Can tether (on the HD2 atleast)
£10 top up required
Same as what i got today along with a Touch Pro and yes teathering allowed as long as don't go over the amount 1GB P/M 40MB Per day

Yep, but you dont have to restrict it too 4omb a day, strictly speaking you COULD use 995mb in one day, as long as you spread the other 5 mb over the rest of the month

Also depends on the signal you can get. I'm in the East Midlands and have a rock solid 3g signal from home which none of the others can do. I've used TMob for ages now and browse YouTube, email etc a lot and have never had any problem. Their Solo 20 plan looked good and if it wasn't for the fact they upgraded me free to a HD2 I would have probably moved to that..

I slightly overbaked my reply hence I shall summarise. O2 PAYG web bolt on is absolutely the most terrible unusable thing ever and I wasted 7.50 on it!!!! O2 monthly is by far better. T-mobile PAYG is the only option for internet on this basis. Coming to that realisation makes most of my post redundant lol!!! but it might be of interest to those also considering contract.
---
just one note, but you cannot get a text and talk bundle on T-mobile AS WELL AS the unlimited texts and internet.
I think for PAYG T-mobile have the best deal for internet as long as you dont do much calling and just use internet.
If you call then their £20 package gives 300mins+unlimited texts. Then £2.50 for five days of internet access as it opts you out of the texts+internet deal.
I tried the O2 web bolt on with a PAYG sim card and the speeds and quality are dire. In fact it's best to use edge as the negotiation time to start a connection is much speedier than 3G. I only get a few hundre KB on O2 PAYG internet with full 3G. And also most times it simply just stalles after 50KB or so.
As for orange....people rave about them, but got a 3G orange PAYG card and it seems to have worse reception than O2 and T-mobile.
My reception between O2 and T-mobile seems to swing between the two, but orange seems to be consistently lower than either.
I would term O2 as maximin - it will maximise your 2G signal, and often gets 3G where T-mobile fails. However, where T-mobile picks up a signal O2 will be a bar or two behind.
T-mobile is maximax - it will more often give you full 3G bars, but will also disappear much sooner.
I think the T-mobile network from testing is less congested - and their image proxy can be avoided I believe.
For monthly contracts O2 web is good however.
For PAYG T-mobile is by far the best provider.
I will personally go for O2 monthly contract. But if I were going PAYG it would be T-mobile.
For contract:
Orange have the best monthly deal - 1200mins, UT, 500MB, £30 phone for £30pm.
O2: 600mins, 1000T, UWeb, £100 phone, £30pm
T-mobile: 900mins, UT, Uweb, £180 phone, £25pm.
For PAYG:
T-mobile: internet+texts = £10. 25p/10p calls/texts; £20 = 300mins+UTexts
O2: £10 for internet+ 300texts, 25/10p calls/texts; £8.00 = 50mins
Vodafone: £20 is 300mins and 3000 texts, no web package.
Orange: £10 - unlimited internet...well, 50MB a month!!!! how shiste is that?
If you roam to europe however, O2 wins....but its PAYG internet is useless.
There is another option - SIM only 30 day rolling contract...
Sorry I should have asked for this thread to be closed ages ago :3
I went with Tmobile, and I love it, very good signal and plenty of bandwith for what I actually need to do .
