[APP] Drawing Software for Leo - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

I thought I would mention the release of a new application called DynaInk. It works with both stylus and finger and allows you to draw on a blank canvas or over a file or photo. Has undo and different pen types and colours. You can save and email your drawings as well.
I liked it so much I bought it ($9.99 US) straight away after just playing with it for a minute or two.
Here is the list of features...
Multilingual
- Available in English and German.
Supports all screen types
- QVGA, VGA, Wide, Portrait and Landscape modes are supported
Drawing Tools
- Pencil (fixed width)
- Brush (draws stronger line for slow movements)
- Pen (draws stronger line for fast movements)
Color Selector
- Fast and easy to use Color Chart
- Eyedropper for selecting color from the canvas
Files (check this out)
- Exporting in industrial standard EPS format
- Export in JPG, BMP, PNG or GIF format
Instant E-mail
- You can send your work via e-mail as a JPG attachment
- DynaInk prepares your mail (with attachment) in Outlook Mobile
Background
- You can directly use image from your built in Camera as background
- Importing background from file (JPG, BMP, PNG or GIF) is also possible
- Show / hide background

First, posting warez is not allowed. Second, if you look at my details (top left of post) there are stars, I support the forum.

Having tried other inking/drawing/note taking apps, they don't seem to do well with the capacitive screen so you end up with wobbly inaccurate lines.
Is this one better...I will give it a try, but would also value your opinion

Can't click a link can you?

Pleased you brought this here Nighthawk..... I was just about to do it myself.
Yes, it's a great little New Application.
Very clean and uncluttered.
Loves
1. Background Import:-
I rather like the idea you can import either as a Background or a File a picture.
What is interesting in the Background selection is you can select Camera. Next step take a Photo and it's automatically imported into DynaInk.
2. Multiple Undo's:-
This is brilliant and is a god send of a time saver.
3. Dynamic Brush Selection:-
Gives the Brush & Quill a natural drawing ability.
Dislikes
1. Removing unwanted ink strokes:-
If you draw to the edge (or near) of the screen and then select Undo then undo your strokes, after the Undo window disappears instead of clearing away all the ink strokes selected it leaves the ink on screen that was previously shown outside of the Undo window.
In other words it clears away any strokes within the Undo window but leaves the ones outside on the screen.
2. Finger Painting
It works but it's a bit hit & miss.
Maybe a Capacitive Stylus will help with this.
Queries
1. Portrait/Landscape
According to the Manual it states the program works in either Portrait or Landscape.
I can't find anywhere in how to make the program change to Landscape?
Improvements
1. Zoom Feature
It would be great if we had an option to zoom in on the work.
This would certainly help with the finger painting in help getting the finger in the right place.
Notes:
1. Well, we have 7 (seven) days trial use.
The web site needs a Forum but in the meantime I've left a few questions on the Support feedback message box.
Happy Painting all.........

I did give it a try and as a drawing application it is excellent, even just on a few minutes playing. I have the artistic ability of a small, sun-hardened cowpat (or say Tracy Emin) and the pen mode can even make a few of my daubs look reasonable.
However, I primarily wanted a scribbler for notes, for which it works up to a point if you are prepared to go slow and steady, but even then it sometimes loses the plot.
If I was a sketcher I would buy this in a heartbeat, but I don't rate it for note taking, at least if you only have your finger handy

Just received a reply back from DynaInk to this one.
Hi,
Thanks for reporting this problem. As I see it only occurs when you undo all your steps. This case DynaInk does not refresh the screen.
I will correct it ASAP, until that you can use File/New to undo all your steps.
Best Regards,
Gabor

That was quick.... I only sent off the request around an hour ago.

Guys,
Received another message from DynaInk this evening:-
Thanks Mike!
I hope I can do the fix tomorrow and I will upload it to dynaink.com/download page.
Best Regards,
Gabor

Got to hand it to DynaInk, they certainly are on the ball and look after the customer base.

Trust me... you won't be disappointed.

Yeah, I got responces from DynaInk last night after I posted a couple of questions to them and such, about 2 hours after I sent them. I am really impressed with that.
I can mention that the software supports WVGA, they just didn't list it in the overview.
As for rotating, could it be a HD2 issue? I'm going to fiddle with registry and will let you know.

Yes.. I've now sent two messages and both came back within the hour (or thereabouts).
As to the rotating, the manual doesn't give too much info (apart from actually saying Portrait/Landscape).
Would be interesting if there is a reg key.
The developer's going to send me an email very soon with the update to the problem I found on screen refresh. I'll post it here as soon as it comes through, along with any other snippets of info.

I've done the registry hack, but it didn't work (created CAB). I suspect it has to do with the value needed for the HKCU\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\WhiteList >>>
Registry String: DynaInk
Value: ????
Anyone know what I should use here as a value?
*** Tried MunichWinClass, DynaInk - no luck
***UPDATE *** I have got rotation working, you can grab the CAB below for making the change.
The (SC) version is for using if DynaInk was installed on Storage Card. Having not made CABs before I wasn't sure if there is a way to set it up (WinCE Cab Manager) to recognise where app was installed automaticaly, so I made the two seperate ones.

You should drop them a line via the support section on their website and ask about them making a Notes application, seems to me they have a lot of the work already done.

It's a good thought and one that I may just follow up on, thanks.
The main problem seems to be that the fine movement and close curves required to write is misinterpreted, so you seem to get random straight lines joining what I'd guess was two points detected as having been pressed on the screen.
If you write big and slowly it's mostly ok, but I wonder if the screen can ever work properly for notes without a stylus.
Certainly not the software's fault though - it's a tidy bit of kit!

Not had chance yet to try this out Nighthawk.
Can you tell me what it actually does to the software or how it's rotated?
Is it done automatically as you rotate the screen?

It's just adds DynaInk to the GSensor Whitelist (registry), same as we had to do for TomTom.

Touch Caller v1.0.4 [Contacts on a cube]

After PECaller, which started has this to make old, here TouchCaller, which will allow you, on a Phone Edition WM5 or WM6, to reach all your contacts with only one finger.
Contrary to PECaller, more basic of data different, all is taken again of Outlook, Photos included/understood, therefore all is synchronisable starting from your PC.
Others surprised are with go, but I leave you the advisability of even discovering them you, a small index, if your PocketPc is compatible DirectX…
Test it, it is FREE
Favourites:
Addition: A click on star (Yellow) with the posting of a contact
Suppression: a click on the star (which became red)
TouchCaller is skinable: The Skins repertory, contains the images which are used for the keys of TouchCaller, if you wish to change them, you must keep the same names.
Two languages, today, are available: French and English. Others can be added.
In the config, if you wish to change the basic image, by “Others”, the image on the left becomes active, a click above opens what to select a “Other of it”
To use the Quitter key (Exit) only if you lack memory
Warnings:
- So that TouchCaller is exploitable, one needs fast PocketPc, in lower parts of 400 MHz that is likely to be too slow to appreciate it.
- If your PocketPc is not compatible DirectX, animations will be decontaminated.

photo resizing with pocket PC

I'm using an Orbit2(Touch Cruise), but my question relates to any pocketPC powered device.
Does anyone know of some pocketPC software that allows precise control over photo resizing ? Preferably free (failing that nag-ware). Ideally it would also allowing cropping, control over compression settings, contrast, and USM (but I know that I'm dreaming on this last point!)
I've been searching for several days, but most of the links relate to desktop software which resize down to PDA dimensions. This is not what I want - I already have plenty of software for PC's which does this.
What I want to be able to do is take a photo on the phone (3.2 MP), and then resize by an arbitrary factor
I realise that the built in picture editor allows "resizing" down to 640 by 480, but this is too small, and only applies when you're emailing and does not affect the original. It also over compresses.
The reason for my question is that the orbit 2 camera is pretty noisy, but when scaled down to about 50% using Gimp or Photoshop on the PC actually gives quite a nice image suitable for beaming / emailing.
Thanks,
Roy.
Here are the ones I tried and rejected today:
photoresize (free)
---------------
failed - converted 21 imgaes out of 31 then fell over with a memory error.
for those it did convert, all of the portrait ones were squished (lost the aspect ratio) irrespective of whether "keep aspect ratio" was checked or not.
promising (good selection of sizes, and selectable compression), but poor implementation
but could use in a pinch by creating a directory with just one or two images, and forcing their rotation to be "correct" prior to conversion
PocketPicture (free)
-------------------
seems to be a ms-paint clone.
fell over when I tried to open a large (3.1mp) image
SpbImageer ($15)
----------------
I didn't like the install process -
it wanted to act as an activesync filter, so abandoned install.
Try XnView Pocket. Unlike the name would let you believe, it is more than a viewer; it edits and resizes pictures and is free. http://www.xnviewpocket.org/

Text-to-image utility for WM?

Anyone know of a utility that will take a text file as input and spit out a simple GIF/JPG/PNG/BMP?
If there are none, plan B would be text-to-speech. Anyone know of a good one that sounds reasonably natural?
Thanks in advance!
if there are such options this is the search which will lead you to them
http://www.google.dk/search?hl=da&q=ocr+pocketpc&btnG=Søg&meta=lr=lang_da|lang_en
you can replace ocr with text to speach if you wanna search for that
One of us is misunderstanding...
As I understand Optical Character Recognition, it takes an image (which contains text) and extracts the text. I'm trying to do the opposite - take a text file as INPUT and OUTPUT to an image. (See attachment.)
BTW- I Googled this heavily before posting. Tons of Text2Image links, but everything I found was made for a desktop PC - not Pocket PC. And including "pocket pc" in the search criteria didn't help... lots of pages with Wintel Text2Image software that mention "Pocket PC" somewhere on the page.
Have you thought of using a fullscreen doc viewer (picsel comes to mind...) and a screen-capture mapped to a hardware button? It isn't automated, but it would get the job done.

With mortscript, you can automate pretty much anything, right? Problem is, that really wouldn't get the job done.
Let me explain the application a bit better...
I use Wisbar Advanced Desktop extensively and I have a pretty sophisticated UI set up. I have a special page for weather, but I'm really not happy with *any* of the weather today plug-ins (and I think I've tried pretty much all of them!) So what I want to do is pass 2 or 3 URLs to mortscript, have it read the file in, parse out the stuff I don't want, leaving me with text that gives me the precise details I do want. I then convert the text to an image file, saving it with the same name ands size every time (e.g. currentconditions.gif - which is already set as a positioned element on the WAD virtual page.) I do the same with extended forecast and surf report (I live at the beach in SoCal) and tell mortscript to go out and update this once per hour. Then, when I go to my weather page, I get exactly the info I want (including sunset time, water temp, UV index, etc.) and my info is no older than 59 minutes.
I'm starting to think that I should just do this server-side... maybe I can find a text-to-image script using php. Hmmmm...

[APP][05-Dec]TouchMark 0.2 - touchscreen precision benchmark

TouchMark is just a quick application I wrote when I got my HD2 to get an objective idea of how accurate I was with the capacitive screen, compared to finger and stylus use on my older devices. I figured today I might as well release it to the general population, since there are so many petty arguements about sensitivity, with little to no hard data. Hopefully this wil help. This should run on any VGA/WVGA device (not sure about QVGA) with .net3.5 installed.
So what can it do? This application will run you through several test clicks of your screen, and your touch performance will be ananlysed and reported, giving you an idea of how accurate you are with your current device+stylus/finger+hand combination. You can use it to compare your personal performance between devices, or check how much accuracy you lose moving from stylus to finger control.
It can also be useful for checking if you are even clicking where you think you are clicking. What you think is a bad interface might just be you actually clicking a bit to the left of where you think you're clicking. This will show up clearly in the visual analysis of your clicks, which is available after benchmarking.
Yes, it's rough around the edges, but it was never designed to be released to the public, all I did really was slap a help file in there. In the unlikely event of major success, I may change that.
Screenshots:
Lower scores are better, as explained in the in-application help.
Version History
- 0.2 - Added application icon (thanks AF241), promoted analysis menu item, fixed render bug in analysis.
- 0.1 - First release. Private test application + added helpfile.
Q: So this gives me a number that tells me how good my touchscreen is?
A: NO! This gives you an indication of how good the interface between three items is. (1) The touchscreen on your device, (2) your hand, and (3) your pointing device.
Q: Do the numbers mean anything?
A: Other than that smaller numbers are better, no. Like all 'good' benchmarking tools, the numbers have no inherent absolute meaning.
Q: I need the TouchMark to do [X] and [Y]!
A: First off, that's not a question, secondly, oh well, never mind. Perhaps if you ask nicely, others agree, AND I feel it would be worth adding, it might be added.
Brilliant idea.
Pretty cool. I try it and it does what it does. My finger arent' very accurate! lol
This is great. Did it a few times and finger accuracy is now much improved! Thank you
Very nice! Thanks!
I can see this coming very handy when checking that the display is properly calibrated (apart from the ever-so-fun fooling around, of course ).
I managed to get about 7000 once, but in most runs I get about 9000 (with my index finger & HD2).
This is really useful, thanks!
I managed to get mine down to about 3000 after calibration. But that was just with my finger. When I then tried to type with my thumbs it was way off.
I have settled for calibrating the top points with my fingers and the bottom points with my thumbs. This gives around 6000 on your program but a better all round accuracy.
Heh, I can't get better than 18,000 on my HD2 (fingers only!) but I never seem to have any trouble clicking links or typing. How the hell you guys get it so low?
*EDIT* ok, did an alignment and just got 1,434!!!

My best "finger score" so far on the HD2 is just below 1500 I seem to be around the 3000 mark most of the time. I hold the phone in my left hand and use my right middle finger (at a weird angle because of my very long nails) never been able to use thumbs on any phone anyway due to the talons getting in the way lol
I got 1323... using stylus though Gonna try finger aswell...
Glad to see it seems to be going down well.
The interesting thing I found was that although I'm pretty precise with my finger (actually not that much less precise than on my old Touch Pro with a stylus), when using my thumb on the move, I was clicking way way to the bottom left of where I *thought* I was clicking (as in, barely even on the X most the time).
Usability on the go, especially with the keyboard, shot right up after seeing that and teaching myself to use my thumb properly. Hopefully others find similar benefits.
Using both thumbs I managed to get about 9000. Before the screen calibration it was 29000 . Here's a icon if anyone wants to use.
I got 1346 with my index finger on the hd2 after calibration
Lol, 227 TouchMarks on my Diamond2, using stylus
Nice tool thanks for sharing. Before calibration (with stylus), I was at almost 32000 touchmarks, and now I'm at ~1600 touchmarks. And my biggest intentional score, if anyone's interested, is 8,950,088 touchmarks

Great icon thanks, added to the application.
would it be possible for the application itself to calibrate the device based on the touches?
and i have one more idea - could the application calculate this:
i would call it "touchmarks if calibrated" or something like that. it would calculate the touchmarks placeing the X in the average of the pressed points.
ideally it would do both:
calibrate and show you the number of touchmarks before and after calibration.
other than that, thanks for the great app !
Hi Ray, and thank you for this nice piece of software.
I just installed it on Kaiser, and it works OK on QVGA, but fonts are too small to read. If you can do something about that it would be nice. Also if I may suggest, it would be useful to divide analysis screen in 12 or more squares and show graphic results for each part of screen, since we err differently in different regions.
A bit OT. I get a lot of 'dragging' when i try just to click, but WM thinks I am sliding my finger. Is it possible to change sensitivity on dragging? There are some settings for touch screen sensitivity in Advanced Config, but I don't know what they do.

Not really on the calibration point, especially since the app isn't really about the screen, it's about you. I wrote it when I got my Leo to see what messages I was sending to the screen.
I found out I was actually touching the screen below where I thought I was when using my thumb. I was fine with my index finger, clicking pretty much where I intended to. There's no way to instruct the screen that "if I'm using my thumb, interpret the cursor as being a bit up and to the right of where I'm pressing", especially since it can't possibly know what finger I'm pressing the screen with!
The lesson learned there is for the person, not the device. My index finger remains a godly input device, but my thumb has improved enormously. The phone saw nothing other than that sometimes I was good, sometimes I was bad.
As for the "if you had your screen calibrated to the average point" idea, I like the idea. There are certainly pros and cons, and I'll think about it at a later date.
Glad you found it useful.

Update (Aug 31):
v1.5 adds ability to export all docs as a single zip file, more options for pen/touch input, and more
About to try it out I'll report back
Edit:
DUDE THIS IS AWESOME.
-UI is nice and clean, also very intuitive
-Hand writing experience is the best I've used.
Things to consider:
- fit to screen button as a shortcut if you've zoomed too far in and need to get out quick.
- page navigation could be located in the bottom right and left corners of the screen, makes it a bit more intuitive. Where the up and down arrows are Now for navigation could act as an area for stating what page your on.(e.g page 6/9)
Things I'm personally looking for:
- drop box integration and PDF annotation support
Keep up keep up the good work.

Not sure I understand the question - the default behavior is to allow for zooming and panning with two fingers (if the fingers start very close together, zooming is disabled). This behavior can be configured so that you can pan with a single finger or disable touch input entirely, in which case the pen button can be configured to pan (and there are zoom options available in the application menu).
If the pen isn't being recognized, try setting Force Pen in the preferences.

As a long-time lurker, I registered an account just to talk about this app! I've been in love with my Thinkpad Tablet for almost a year now, but I never really "clicked" with any of the handwriting apps available for it, which really sort of frustrated me. I tried out your app, and so far I've been really enjoying it! I do have a question: is there an easy path to convert the handwritten text from the Write app on the tablet into a typed form on my PC?
Basically, I'm looking for a way to use the TPT to capture my handwriting when I'm out and about, as it's easy to carry the TPT and work in any environment. The ideal solution would be some function/process to then export the document from the Write app and have it convert it to .txt or something. If I had to e-mail it to myself, or use ES File Explorer to drop it onto my file-share at home where I could get at it from my desktop PC, that would be fine too.
Just looking for recommendations on the least-frustrating way possible to do what I want to do!
Thank you very much for this app!

I do have a question: is there an easy path to convert the handwritten text from the Write app on the tablet into a typed form on my PC?

If you have Evernote installed, you can use "Send Current Page" from the Document submenu and select Evernote, which will OCR the page and make it searchable. I'm not sure if there is an easy way to extract the converted text. In the future, I will look into exporting all pages at once to Evernote.
What are your main reasons for wanting to convert handwriting to text (especially since any conversion will introduce quite a lot of errors unless your handwriting is flawless)? To be consistent with the rest of your documents? For searching? For sending to others? Something else?

Wow, thanks for responding to my question Matt!
I don't have Evernote installed, but I'll install it just to try the feature you're talking about.
Basically, I would want to convert handwriting to text in order to be able to do a number of things:
1. Easily post things I've written to my blog.
2. Move chapters of my stories into an editable word-processor-compatible format.
3. Send to an editor.
4. Archive in an easily appendable format...in the case of my stories, each one would eventually go into a single larger file as it's polished/finished and saved on my network drive and backed up.
The writing application that came with the TPT was pretty decent at translating my writing to text, but I didn't like using it to write as much as yours, and on top of that, when I rooted the tablet and installed CM 8 (or whatever version this is), that handwriting app didn't come along for the ride. I didn't realize at the time that it wouldn't be part of the package, so I'd been looking for suitable replacements. Quill had been where I'd settled until I saw your post, and I just like the functionality of your app better so far when it comes to usability while doing my scribbling.
This is a great handwriting app. I have bee using Quill for almost a year since I couldn't find another app that can do what it can. However, this app does more than Quill and I am considering switching over to this app. There are a few things I would like to see added to this app before I do. I would like to be able to draw lines and geometric shapes. It would be great if you could add an auto save function, that way I dont have to worry about losing my notes. While using Write I found myself getting ticked off by the zoom levels. When I tried to zoom to lever .65, it would automatically got to .75. Instead of having the volume keys used to undo/redo it would be better to have the used for changing pages and adding pages. I also noticed that if you have many pages of notes you wont be able to quickly go to a specific page of notes, you have to go through all the pages. A way to get around that is by making thumbnails of the pages inside the document so you can easily browse through them. Overall this is a very good app, it just needs those few things to completely win me over.

The document is automatically saved whenever it loses focus or the screen turns off, so the only thing that could cause you to lose your notes would be Write crashing ... if you've experienced this, let me know! Or if by auto save, you meant backing up to a different location, you could try something like SugarSync, which allows you to sync folders on Android. You can also change the folder where documents are saved (in advanced preferences) for other sync applications that don't let you specify the folders to be synced.
I've been thinking about the best way to handle geometric shapes, so there might be something like this in a future release (but not the next release).
The zoom is intentionally limited to discrete steps. The idea is to usually work at zoom = 1 and adjust the page size and ruling (i.e. line spacing) as desired. So if you prefer the way the page looks at zoom = 0.65, you can change the default Y ruling from 40 to 40*0.65 = 26.
The next release of Write will allow the volume keys to be configured.
Document navigation could definitely be improved (e.g. thumbnails). There are a couple things you could try in the meantime. First, zooming out all the way (0.10) should make it possible to scroll through pages pretty quickly - double tap with two fingers to zoom to 100% on the desired page (or one finger, if you switched the preference to single finger panning). Second, for pages you frequently go to, add a bookmark on the page next to the title or some other identifying writing - you'll then see it in the bookmark list and can jump to it by tapping on it in the list.

I was worried that the document didn't save by itself since there was an option under the document menu to "save now." I thought that meant that I would have to click on that every time I finished taking notes. Adjusting the page size has solved the problem I was having with the zoom. The more familiar I get with this app the more comfortable I am writing with it. Keep up the good work and thanks for the fast reply. Oh, when will the next release be, if you don't mind me asking?

The next release will probably be early in January.

I love how responsive it is, best free/paid app I've tried. I would like to see a different background other than normal paper. I have always liked writing on graph/grid paper. Thanks for the app and keep up the good work.

You can configure the page color and background by selecting Page Setup from the application menu. To get grid paper, for example, select one of the "grid" options for "Ruling".

Been messing with some of the setting and found the grid/graph paper, that has tons on options, and I found pen only input which always is need or at least for me it is. The more I play around with this app the more I see what other apps needed.
