Things I should know before rooting? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Its my first time rooting. I have a mytouch 3g. What are some things I should know about? Some do's and some don't. One thing I am confused about is this 32A and 32B thing. Also What causes a phone to be bricked and what should I do to prevent that? What is a good easy to follow tutorial(preferably video-tho I found couple on youtube already)? And if I install the Hero ROM do I get all the capabilities of a HTC Hero.

ok, I just rooted mine and I'm complete noob with this stuff.
Number 1: Read twice, Think twice, Do Once.
Number 2: 32A and 32B is the type of motherboard your phone has. You can check which version you have by powering down your phone, then hold power+back until you get into the fastboot menu. It will say 32A or 32B somewhere there.
If you want videos, check out www.theunlockr.com (thats where I started, then used the Relentless application found in these forums to finish the process.)

and number three
dont post this in development, this has nothing to do with development and belongs in q&a.. its no wonder these threads are a mess.

Umm okay, i saw some vids of this One click root or something like that. Would that work?? And sorry about the post, I was under the Sapphire forum and didn't know where else to put it.

It should work but the main thing is if your unsure about rooting it don't do it, when your unsure of things that leads you too make stupid mistakes which will always lead to a brick
rooting your phone is quite stressful (even when you understand it) because you never know when it might just not turn back on...
my suggestion to you is simple....
your unsure now so the best way to go about it is doing your research until your 110% sure of what you are doing
rooting isn't just going to disappear tomorrow, and that gives you plenty of time to research and understand before you make a bricking mistake

Alright thanks, but I'm not sure where to go to do my research.. I'm trying to put posts up to look for answers as of right now.

Now that a bajillion people have rooted rc30 all of a sudden, how about we all take a moment to hit the search button and read all the posts before you start asking old old old ass questions??
'Tis a good day for non-rooted people but c'mon. For weeks there were just a handful of new posts in a few threads on a daily basis, now i come back from the new year and see every single thread with a "PLEASE HELP ME IM ASKING QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ASKED AND ANSWERED A MILLION TIMES ALREADY WHAT DO I DO???".
To most of you new rooted g1 users.. every problem/question you may have has probably already been asked/discussed already. Dont post stupid questions in old ass posts please.
kthxbye
p.s. flame away.. boss is gone and im bored.

HEAR HEAR!!!!
I had to do a lot of reading to get my RC30 back to RC29, then reflash the recovery image, then reflash w/ the patched RC30. One topic had the recovery.img install and a whole other post had the patched RC30 install. There was no link to the USB driver for the G1 needed for ADB to communicate, I had to go find that on my own (not hard).
One problem I had was I couldn't execute the SU command in the ADB shell. It said that the command wasn't found - which is because I was still trying to put the recovery image on with RC30. I had to ADB put the file and then use the terminal on the phone to execute the shell commands needed to flash it. I don't know if that was a typo or if the directions were from RC19 where it might have had the SU command included but I couldn't do it from RC29.
Perhaps if someone were to put all the steps in the right order with links to the proper files all in one page - it would be simpler for people trying to do this. Of course there are two sides to this - too easy access to steps that can brick the phone can result in a huge increase of dead phones being sent in for warranty, too difficult a procedure can also result in the same thing with half finished installs.
All of the information is out there but there isn't a very clear path towards it. I don't know if making it easy for any idiot to do is a good thing at this point or not. The people who can't figure it out on their own probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place since there really isn't anything that "Joe I-Just-Upgraded-From-A-Sidekick" should be doing w/ root access at the moment.
I think this is the most well laid out version of the walk through we have. Unforutunately, no one has stickied it, and it falls like a brick. It should also be updated with the new instructions. If anyone has the time.

The very same problem with multiple posts is also screwing us Android Newbies. We dont know where to start. Searching is great, I am a big fan. But unfortunately we dont know WHAT to search FOR. This is a new process to us, and there isnt a Android for Dummies book yet. Once a GOOD turorial is made (I think this wiki covers it now)(edit, plus the link above looks great too!), this will die down. Until then, a lot of us have NO idea what order to do these steps in, and apparently we are asses for asking. Sorry we aint all smart n stuff, but we has to lern somehow
I will be following the Wiki that I posted above when I have some down time, until then I will crawl back in my WM equipped corner and STFU so as not to create unwanted posts.

and to the bajillion differing instructions on how to root/devboot/jf 1.3
u got everyone telling you different things to do... my guess is when you had root there was one topic to do root. one option at a time. now the people who just got root obviously know to use the happynew.zip or the other 2 listed but after u got the ability to root i read about 4 other stickies on what to do next. blindly since people dont clarify i took the risk and did it how i wanted and got stuck in a boot loop. thank god common sense tells me that i should pull the battery and then put back in and vola booted up. then i loaded it into bootloader and then vola saw skate boards.
instead of insults you can take the time and spend it helping other people with your superior expertise hell i wasnt even half way through finishing my phone and took time to help out....
happy holidays.. to you as well
I have to agree that figuring out how to get root and the updated stuff is a little confusing. When modified RC 30 first came out, there was just 2 posts you could refer to and after reading it was fairly straight forward. Now those posts seem to have disapeared/modified.
I had to read 3 different topics and 3 different wikis before i kinda new what to do. the instructions being not very clear on where things should be done, terminal in linux or on the phone.
Im not here that often, but IMO the search is awefull, not returning search results for posts i know exist or bringing up tons of unrelevent information. and im not a newb to searching, im an active member over at a mycolgy forum and the search there is awesome and that site is based on the same type of forum as this.
that aside, this is an amazing forum. You all put in a **** load of effort to make things better for all of us. Im well impressed that its only taken 4 months.
LOL
no, there were still tons of threads on how to do it.. in fact, it was probably WORSE when i was rooting my device.. since there was no structure to the postings at all.
I just took my time and read all the information available to me.. and it was very simple.
and for the record, im not even talking about the posts in the 'hax my phone' threads... im talking about the tons of old threads that all the new rooters are reading now that they have root and asking ridiculous questions that have been answered months ago.
and..
"All of the information is out there but there isn't a very clear path towards it. I don't know if making it easy for any idiot to do is a good thing at this point or not."
There is a good reason that the information is scattered all over the place. RETARDS CANT HIT THE SEARCH BUTTON! If they did a search for it, and read for a little bit before posting questions at random, the information wouldnt be scattered about.
If people dont have time to search and read about something that they are interested in doing, then they should just leave it alone.
let me also add, that it isn't always about the search button. It just about reading the threads all the way through, then asking questions. Because 99% of the time people's questions have already been asked.
So, if you are new to all this, just read all the posts and you shouldn't have to make a post yourself. ever.
"Bush and Cheney are hanging out in the oval office one day, and Mr. Bush picks up a paper and reads teh headline: 7 Brazillian men killed in latest attacks.
Bush cant believe what he is reading, he says "7 brazilian men killed [email protected]! We gotta get these sons of b!tch3s"
Then he turns to Cheney and says " How many is a brazilian? "
triple post ftw

If that is the case, then maybe the posters need to be more responsible with their posts. For example, instead of a new post Koush changed the topic to "How to get Root on ALL G1s - RC30 and RC8+ INCLUDED!! (Updated 1/1/2009)" which is great for the first post. Then, as you read the second you quickly figure out that this stuff is a month old and only the first post and the last page pertain. All it is doing is making things more confusing. A NEW post with the same heading, and a timelined group of questions that are RELEVANT to the topic would have made things MUCH less confusing. And these are the experts, so they can follow it and figure it out.
If someone had a map of the steps required to downgrade, as well as the steps to achieve a modded RC30 and it were made a sticky, that would likely end many of the questions. I cant speak for everyone, but I dont mind learning- but there is no structure to the method of "learning" you expect of us. Until there is, you will continue to see the questions.
I can't disagree with that. Now that we have a way to downgrade, there should be a main sticky post that has instructions on how to do it all and some of the other posts should be removed / merged into the new one.
But, im not a mod, nor did i make any of the walkthroughs.. nor did i make any of these hacks.
But my complaint is not that there are questions being asked, thats a given. I just dont want the same questions asked in every single post related to this. Especially the old posts that dont need to be brought up anymore.
A moderator should make a 'general root Q&A' thread, and a thread on 'how to root your device'. Then kill the rest of them.
but, what do i care. im just bored at work and i want to stir the pot

I agree with ya too BUT this is a VERY busy site. There is info on here for every phone out there. Soooo there is going to be alot of traffic and alot of people in a hurry to get a answer to there problem and nooo they arent going to use the search button. Its just something that has to be gotten used to. Going to be like this until this site closes.

exactly that u got 2 months or more on a topic that doesnt even apply and this carries over to the wing thread AND everyone else.... you see that little number next to each post here watch this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3113025&postcount=144 takes me to the exact thread and POST if i am referencing ANYTHING but no one seems to use it. so we sift through 300 posts to find outdated info then wonder why people get mad.... and both the searches on this post are not the best. i typed in adb in the build in search because i can exact it to the dream thread " SORRY No matches found" honestly now. we are smart but dont inidate us with a topic hashed to death with things 3 months old and expect everyone to not ask questions...

well stir the pot or not hopefully this calls attention to how PEOPLE in general post there things. it is not just the dream forums it was a habbit of the rom cooks in the wing as well as im sure many other posts.... like i said before if those editing or modifying threads to include new updates it would be helpful to say forinstance for those downgrading skip these steps and follow from post #87 or copy that little number 87# of that threat into it as a link. we do appricate everyones hard work but making it not so clear causes confusion. if you were unsure that you would brick your 400$ phone modifying it with out dated material would you?
First time poster.
Got to say, I've found it /really/ easy to get the answers to any problems I've stumbled into, the sticky posts are great, and any bodges have been my mistake not following the posts.

Continuous Startup Problem

Hey guys, I am having a problem. My ATT Tilt is stuck on bootloader and will not load. I have flashed my ROM for the 5th time now and every time I turn off my device, it gets stuck on bootloader. I have used the HTC provided EXE Rom loader in their site. What can I do, please help.
I suppose when you post your question here is because you did read the wiki and the sticky threads about "how to flash", etc.
I suppose if you read those threads, you used the correct combination in radio, SPL, and ROM
So, if you did all those things, now you must only flash another ROM compatible with your SPL and Radio.
If you did not, then read those sticky threads and then try to unbrick your device. Then, try to write here what SPL, radio and ROM, etc. numbers appear on the boot screen so that somebody will tell you about taking the device to the technical service. (One thing I learned: no device gets stop on bootloader if everything inside it is in the correct combination)

WOW!! Incredible how people time and again get soo lazy they refuse to help themselves by reading. This is a DEV SITE, NOT A HELP SITE! We expect you to do research and help yourself before you ask questions that have time and again been answered. Do yourself a favor and go to the hack kit thread and read the entire thing. It's not difficult assuming you have a reading level above the 3rd grade. You'll probably notice that you either did one of two things: you either didn't follow a step or you didn't see that there is an IRC chatroom to help people with issues during the rooting process. PLEASE SEARCH AND READ before you destroy your phone.
Ze, shut her down.

HAHA jerk? I see basic grammar has escaped you HERE, WHICH leads me to believe that you don't have a reading level above the 3rd grade. Do yourself a favor and stop before you destroy your phone and have to start another pointless thread that reads "OMGz I BRICKED MY PHONE BECAUSE I CAN'T READ". The hack kit is a simple tool provided you take the time to read everything, which includes both effen maunal and the OP in that thread. I can tell you didn't read ****? you wanna know why? because if you read the entire OP you would see that there is an IRC chatroom dedicated to helping those with issues during the rooting process using the hack kit. Stop being lazy. THIS IS A DEVELOPMENT SITE, NOT HOLD YOUR HAND BECAUSE I CAN'T READ FOR MYSELF SITE..something you don't comprehend.
EDIT: You've gone through 5 inspires?!?! At what point do you stop and think maybe I'm doing something wrong and should re-read the instructions on what I'm doing?!

I logged in just so I could chime in on this one.
Calling people names is rude and not tolerated here. If you were to answer as many questions here as some of us have you would understand the lack of patience and intolerance we sometimes express. That being said, bacon boy is right that you need to do a little more reading in the hack kit thread, if you don't find your answers there you can log onto the irc server and get help there. No offense but starting a new thread because you do not feel like doing a little bit of searching and reading on your own is pretty thoughtless and lazy. Like I said before pretty much all info you need is in the hack kit thread and in the effen manual and on the irc channel. Don't call people names here. This isn't kindergarten. Hope you get your issues sorted out.
And with that outta the way,
Ze, shut 'er down!
I can try to help you out.. pm me if anything and I can try to point you in the right direction it can be rough looking around it happens its.not the end of the world
Like I said I'll try to help you out I don't mind
HTC Inspire
I can see all sides of this arguement. I know the feeling of "UhOh, I just bricked my phone" its frantic and scary. On the other hand when I started on XDA and was poking around reading this and that before making my move. I kept seeing. "DO YOUR RESEARCH, READ THIS, READ THE EFFEN MANUAL IT'S IN THE EFFEN HACK KIT". So I did. For 3 days I read every bit of info before downloading anything. As far as the devs I get how so many questions about nonissues can be frustrating and make you want to choke slam a stranger. But it does all boil down to the rules of XDA.
Read everything, all posts in a thread AMD the Q&A thread of whatever you initially looking at and only post if you can find the answer somewhere else. But most of all read the instructions.
Are you 100% sure you totally bricked all 4 of your previous phones? Be wise there's been at least 4 times I thought I bricked mine. And they aren't cheap so youu may want to be sure of that because it seems you probably have just spent a grand on phones. Sorry for your troubles. Cyrax is a good guy and I'm sure he can help with whatever the issue is.
Now everyone just take a deep breath.......... And exhale.
Agreed please read up on what your doing. Modding the software on your phone is no simple thing. Yes it has been made easy but in no way is it simple. Please read up and search. What ever happened believe me your not the first to have it happen.
As for the replies. Outright insulting people will not be tolerated. By ANYONE!

Really man? Reading is fundamental. Please do your research before asking a question. While the process may seem unbelievably easy, which it is provided you read everything and research, rooting and flashing roms, radios, kernels should not be done lightly. Did I mentioned read and search? yeah do that. Everything you're asking has been covered more then 1,000 times.
If you haven't already rooted, see the hack kit thread in the dev section. Read everything, the OP and the effen manual. Once you do that, do it again and then again for comprehension. After you've rooted, the process in flashing a new rom is not complicated at all. Again, these are all things you can find by searching and educating yourself. If you ever ask what the best rom/kernel is again, I'll blow up your house. I'm just kidding but that's a dead horse that people continue to kick over and over and over and over and over again. Don't believe me and want to find the answer for yourself why I say that, search best rom and see the response. You'll thank me later.

I'll give you the "best rom" speech lol. There is no best rom. All roms will have bugs. What is best for me, is not best for you. It all depends on what you want out of the rom. There are some things some roms have while others don't and the more you test out the more you'll know what you can live without and what you can't. So the best thing to do is, try them all out and see what you like. My recommendation is Bindroid for sense, Absolution for AOSP.
Believe me, reading is key and you clearly get that. I just don't want to see you make a mistake that could have been easily prevented ya know! If you want my personal take on why I recommend the above roms, PM and I'll share.
Well, after looking through the stickies, i have a question. Is there a glossary of terms for the inspire? I'm trying to learn about procedures and processes on this device but most of its Greek to me. I know rooting and flashing, basic stuff. But S off/on, eng off/on, hboot, etc. I currently use a Captivate and those are terms I'm not familiar with.
thats pretty much what i was asking xD
Ok, Google answered my questions. And i have read the effin manual. Probably read it 2 or 3 more times. Just in case.
Friends that are asking about radio and rooting just check out the inspire or w.e phone your looking to get and read about the radios and rils to see what they do and most if not all roms talks about the radio ril

[Q] Stuck at HTC logo after flashing ROM

Hi guys.. I have visited the site many many times and usually found all the answers I need. However, I only recently took the plunge and rooted my Desire S. And surprise surprise I think I've done it wrong! I'm stuck at the HTC logo and it never gets any further
The steps I have taken are:
-Unlocked with HTCdev
-Rooted with SuperOneClick (it was all good at this point. Used fine for a couple of days)
-Installed CWM recovery.
-Flashed VanillaIce ROM
And that's as far as I have gotten. The VanillaIce went through the installation process very smoothly, I selected the option 'reboot' and since then, it won't boot past the HTC logo. But I CAN get to the bootloader screen, and recovery mode.
I am on hboot 2.00.0002

You haven't searched. You haven't even thought about searching. If you had searched then you would have found out about HTCDev and boot.img - now go and search

http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=80067477
Like I said, I have searched but I can't find an answer to this SPECIFIC situation. I can't seem to find the info in simple words anywhere.

If you bothered reading then you wouldn't need a fix for this "specific situation". HTCDev is the problem. Boot.img is the answer, as I have already posted.
Now look for those and when you realise what it is you can come back and use the thanks button for me and Rain.
If you can't find the answer yourself given the hints we've given you then put your phone in the bin and use a Nokia 3310 instead.
Oh ok, I will need to do this at home later as I'm on linux at work.
Thanks for the help, although the rudeness is quite unnecessary.
Trying to find clear explanations for this stuff is rather difficult, I know the info is out there but it's all scattered about, with threads linking all over the place.
Pls dun misunderstand us. We are not trying to be rude to shuu u away, people have be known to brick their device by not reading thoroughly. They bump into an issue in one thread and tried another solution in another, and in a state of nervousness they blindly and rushly do unnecessary stuff, such as pulling their battery and frying the emmc chip.
Also the solution u are looking for a in the 2nd and 3rd of the search result apart from ur post which is the 1st. And the answer is in the 2nd or 3rd reply.
Why do ppl stressed on reading 1st, because it is ur phone, ur responsiblity, and if it bricks, it is all on u. And to be responsible is to read.
And ur question is not the 1st in the past month, I think there are like 10 different people asking in 10 different thread with 10 different people answering the same 1 thing over and over and over again.
With this in mind, aren't u a bit ignorant in refusing to read the searches u made?
So when people asked u to search by giving u key words, it simply means the answers are there.

I also really don't see the point of this attitude of SimonTs and others on xda... Why always react pissed off instead of giving your critique in a positive way...

Maybe you should read about what XDA was actually created for? It is a Developers site, not a noobs site. I have no problem helping people - if you look you will see that I can actually be extremely helpful when the situation requires it - but when someone comes on here claiming to have searched or not bothering to put in the basic reading then I will ALWAYS point them to do that first.
Just spoon-feeding the answers helps nobody - firstly because the same questions always get asked and secondly because if the person then makes a mistake they haven't got a clue how to recover.
Bear in mind that when I bought my DS and S-Offed it, the only way to do it was with a hardware rig called an XTC-Clip. If you made a mistake with that method your phone was toast - so you can imagine how many hours I spent reading to understand EXACTLY what I was doing.

I do not intend to be rude but when you answer the same question for about hundreds of times and the fact that the search function lists all your hundreds of answers it gets really annoying by two reasons:
1) it feels like you have wasted a lot of time that no one appreciates
2) over time the Desire S section of XDA became quite a good knowledge base but the newcomers do not care to use it and find more easy to flood with new "already answered" pointless threads

Why not just leave the stupid questions unanswered then, instead of spilling negative words every single time? You are the one who chooses to answer. I don't say I disagree. I also think that people should search better, but I don't get why you put all your energy in those negative reactions. Besides don't blame the noobs for being on xda. Of xda is not meant for everyone, don't make it accessible for everyone....

No one was pissing of at anyone, If i would call my younger sister to read it out loud it wouldn't sound anything like how u imagine, some might even call it cute, but if i were to call my grumpy old grandad to read then i would say some one is piss off.
Matter of perception.
