Read this first.

Seems to me like you're speed reading the WIKI in the same way people read a cheap book..... don't start at the beginning, read every other chapter then (and I'm waiting for this one) complain that the book was crap because you missed something.
20 minutes after your first post asking what a rom is you're suddenly 'expert' enough to discern that the HTC ROM is better than your ATT one. Well yes - you're probably right but how long will it be before you discover that your radio might not work after your upgrade (another 5 minutes) or that you can screw up without hardSPL (sorry missed that one 'cos it was in chapter 2 and I only read odd numbered chapters on Tuesdays).
Go away and come back when you've learned how to read.

LOL! Very true though.
Sepig. People are going to bash you if you don't spend a lot of time reading the wiki and forums before you post questions because you can seriously screw up your device if you don't. From your post, it will be a while before you can upgrade your phone.
Just go here and install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Once you've install that CORRECTLY, go here for the official kaiser rom:
http://www.zshare.net/download/45579378780722/
That only took me 2 minutes to do. Wiki is your friend. Remember that!

I totally understand that this is a very basic question but instead of loading your guns you should just point the person in the right direction like ericc191 here. Just think of yourself when you got your 1st pda phone ever...

Have you considered that I might actually be a 7th grader???
Anyway, a bit harsh maybe - but if people fall over backwards to help others who are too lazy or impatient to help themselves then we'll be as inundated with useless posts as the Hermes forums.
And fyi, I don't normally flame noobs if they've done a bit or real work themselves - instead I normally try to help.
Also fyi, I was mildly flamed as a noob - ONCE only. I went away with my tail between my legs and learned to read - once I could read I learned to write.
In a bizarre way, by flaming noobs you do help - 1. because you bump their post. 2. someone always comes along to help. 3. To get the help they have to read through the scorn at their (sometimes) dumb question or attitude so maybe they research better next time.
Besides the above I'd had a beer and a ****ty day

Flaming is a bit pointless if done to someone who, as was obviously the case here, comes with a complete blank and probably doesn't even know what a wiki is and what/where to look first.
On the other hand, it's a perfect opportunity to throw one's wisecracks at the noob and entertain the forum. A bit too easy though, don't you think?
There is a difference between helping or spoiling

Totally agree! This forum is not started just a few days ago. There are plenty of info. to solve most problems. Encourage people being lazy is actually not good for them. No need to scold them but just point them to the right place to read. If they don't. Just ignore them. I've been ignored before, but now I am able to cook my own Kaiser ROM.
Spoiling people is not helping.
In fact I would propose there is a black out period like 24hrs to 48hrs that a newbie cannot start any new thread. They may post to ask question but not starting new thread as soon as they register the forum.
Sad but true.
It seems that people are not into reading these days. Such a shame, cause reading makes you intelligent ! *ping*
No but seriously, read the forum starting with the Wiki. After that please remind yourself that you are NOT an IT-geek which makes the whole process probably even more dangerous. After the coscideration that your computerskills utterly -suck- , click cross in the right-upper-corner and have a nice day.
with love!
I see this as a website to go to to find answers.
Similarly to how I would go to Dell.com (or whatever) if I wanted to find a PC to buy to play my latest game I bought.
I don't go reading through the technical manual on how a CPU or GPU works so that I know which one to buy. I look to the people who already have the knowledge to answer the questions I have.
Most of the regular posters on here (I'm guessing) already know a lot about flashing PDAs etc... especially the first guy who flamed the OP. If you don't want to share your knowledge then don't take part in the forum. Yes, there are people who are trying to find an easy way to learn everything that you know and I agree that they should do their research etc... but this guy was abviously wanting a few pointers and got blasted for it. Take it as a compliment that he feels confident in this forum to be able to prvide him with the bit of knowledge he requires to do a flash and then be done. He has never done one before and will never do one again so why does he have to spend weeks reading material that potentially could give him answers that you could write in a line or so?
Please, don't flame the noobs.
I find that more often than not they don't come back.
Look how many times he has replied to this thread since the first guy flamed him... none.
No ill feelings to the original poster, as we were all there one day,
but to see it as a thread headline made me laugh!!! Actually made my day!
No worries, ROM Flashing is easy as hell!!

Nobody get paid in this forum. You pay Dell for their machine so you may and should entitle some service. If you get some free service AND some free spanking in this forum, that is life, no flesh does not come with blood. Even experienced one may get spanked once a while by asking non-sense question. No need to be too thin-skin.
You may also be the lucky ones who has plenty of money and being pampered and like the noobs who like to ask million dollar question like "Which is the best ROM in this forum?" or "How do I flash my ROM step_by_step with guaranteed no risk?" or "Where do I get free SIM unlock service?" and expect an answer right away.
Many people paid to have their machine unlocked. Getting knowledgeable advice from someone is a service and entitled to get compensation for. Talk to a lawyer for advice, you will fully appreciate all the good folks in this forum and they are the one needed to be pampered and not the noobs.
One will learn and learn by reading this forum. It is more like drugs to me now.
He hasn't replied, that is good, that means he is doing reading and reading and reading..... If he is not, why he want to risk his $600 machine and ended up blaming everyone in this forum for not helping him or prevent him from doing that.
I don't think he was flamed by the #2 or #3 or # .... He is being educated! He is benefiting by this experience! The machine that's saved maybe his!
Please note there is a note in this forum which says:
Reading this Forum (Wiki) may be hazardous to your health!
Hey, I think it may also be hazardous to your family life, your love life, and/or your current job! Not just your machine!
Lets get a bit real here...
The name of this site is XDA-Developers. There is a bit of a clue in the title as to a certain amount of pre-knowledge. This guy asked what a ROM is - he could have got his answer from dictionary.com but instead decided to go to a group of people who are (or were) efectively researching on the forefront of the XDA pda's.
Most noobs (me included) have a lot of experience of computers but at first they don't have any idea of how to translate this into WM5 or WM6. But they learn quick because they already have the pre-knowledge to enter a developers site. This question was nothing like that and there is a greater than 90% chance that we'll be fending off the 'what is the best rom', 'how do I insert the stylus', 'how do you spell brick' type of questions unless he is discouraged from proceeding without some serious reading.
I know there are nice and nasty ways to tell someone what to do, but my experience of these forums is that people who don't read will not read the 'help granny cross the road' style of advice - but they do tend to get the point when flamed a bit (and it could have been worse).
Anyway, I hope he's gone away - keeps reading and then comes back a bit better prepared. And lets face it - anyone can flash a Rom, but not everyone can recover from a bad flash - and bad flashes is what we want to prevent at any cost.

Actually, I bricked my first PDA phone on the second day... That's when I found this forum However I managed to unbrick it. Somehow. Can't remember the how.
This is NOT, and I repeat NOT a guide for rooting. It is a warning. Helpful advice if you will. It is here to deter you from making your life as well as those here who help others a nightmare. We are here to help those who want to help themselves. As mentioned in another thread, this forum is here to HELP people. This advice is here to help as helping also includes prevention. The advice below is for the sole purpose of preventing those who don't know what they're doing from bricking their devices prematurely.
If you don't like my advice or my opinion; that is your given right. Remember the forum rules and keep it impersonal, clean and respectful.
I am here to help people and if that includes encouraging members to learn first before they do harm to their device then so be it. If I can prevent even one person from ruining their phone before they learn how to use it then I accomplished something.
Note: Whosdaman; please feel free to move this to whatever section you feel this better fits in. I took a shot putting it here.
Disclaimer/Advice/Humble Opinion:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA, Google) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. Well; it's not cool to be a n00b and attempt root. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's, boot into Safe mode, Mount R/W, run shell commands or Terminal Emulator etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read, read and re-read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
If you don't even know what some of the things are that were mentioned, then you should absolutely NOT root your phone. You will likely brick or screw up your phone and then be right back here asking for help in a new thread most definitely created by you out of haste or costing [insert phone manufacturer/carrier here] money by sending your phone back and asking for a replacement simply because you had no idea what you were doing. JMHO
#include <std_disclaimer.h>
/*
* Rooting voids your warranty.
*/
Again, this is not here to offend anyone's sensitivity or hurt your feelings. Many have argued that bricking and recovery is the way they learn. That's fine [for them]. I highly doubt those same people started running before walking, or walking before crawling. But the majority of people need to learn first. Preventing someone from ruining their device is MY best advice.

1.) Power Off>remove battery>WAIT for at least two minutes.
2.) Power On Phone while Holding MENU key until you get to the lock screen>At the bottom left corner of the display in transparent text will be the words "Safe Mode"
When in safe mode, Android does not load any third-party apps, and you can uninstall the application that gave you trouble from Settings > Applications > Manage applications.
To exit Safe Mode:
1.) Power off phone again>remove battery>wait two minutes
2.) Do a normal power on ...
So after reading this I still couldn't figure out how to get this root stuff you were talking about. I don't know what this "search" or "google" is. But if this makes me cool then I'm all about it- maybe I could get a girlfriend finally.

WHY?
The advice, while a successful deterrent, is not very useful. If people are here on this website, chances are they are here to learn something new about how to improve or customize their phones. We were all noobs at one point in time an I know that I benfited greatly from all the guides and reference threads here. Why not post some links to some helpful threads and say "Read these BEFORE you try anything," not "Don't try it at all and if you want to do it, find your own way to." Just a thought.

And that is exactly my advice. LEARN FIRST. Browse through the threads and see how many are beginners who jumped too soon and are now asking for help. It's ridiculous. If you don't like my advice move on and troll another thread. Many here agree with what I've suggested. Take it or leave it.
In my experience, the ones who have a problem with this are the ones who are guilty of it. People who want to be 'cool' and root without learning then clutter the forums begging for help.
Honestly I think you're making a sweeping generalization assuming that anyone who roots their phone without reading everything there is to read first is just trying to be "cool".
Granted, there are a lot of folks out there that could stand to take a lesson or two in common sense, but I don't think it does anyone any good to tell all the "n00bs" to essentially eff off until they've done more research than I think most people on this forum who've successfully rooted would normally do.
There are numerous disclaimers that tell people to stay away from rooting unless they either know what they're doing or are willing to take a risk, and there are numerous people who learn by doing rather than reading.
In fact I would venture a guess that, were people to subscribe to your suggestion, this forum and indeed the entire Android dev ecosphere would suffer greatly, because many devs learn by tweaking and fixing... usually something that they themselves broke!
I don't ask that you change your opinion. Simply that you ask yourself what you really hope to accomplish with this post. It would seem to me that the people you hope to deter would just be insulted and ignore it.
As a previous poster had mentioned, it would be more convincing if you provided resource links to help educate those you are trying to reach.
Also, before you sling that "troll" moniker my way as you did a previous poster, you might do well to remember that just as you have the right to post your opinion, others have the right to disagree.

well sir, maybe some of us noobs got tired of not being able to use any apps over wifi on our blackberry without data a blackberry plan and bought an android phone so we can have more freedom.
maybe some of us noobs are diving into rooting so we can use setpcu and squeeze more than the stock 2 hour heavy use we get from a stock MT4G
maybe some of us want to learn more about the system but we ask so many questions because we dont know where to get VISIONary plus since its no longer in the market place.
i dunno about other noobs but a thread with links to what to read to learn more is way more beneficial to me than this one telling me to stay out the circle of android trust.
perhaps you are the one who thinks being rooted is "cool"?(no disrespect meant)
some of us do really want to learn and we appreciate every help and every answer we get to our questions from you veterans.
so please have a little patience and/or noob tolerance. someday we'll learn and stop asking the same question that had been answered a doze times already
A simple Google search turned up 302,000 for Visionary. Maybe if you stopped and thought before you posted you might have better results.
Again, this thread wasn't meant to hurt anyone's sensitive feelings [as it seems it has]. It was meant to deter new members/rookies from diving into something before they learned it. Obviously with the new breed of youngsters these days that just isn't the case. Common sense seems to have taken a back door to rushed gratification. Intelligent strategy is how many of us learned, not jumping in and screwing things up.
By jumping in and messing things up, you not only make things harder on yourselves but waste our time helping with things that have been answered a thousand times and a simple search would have taught you that.
As with anything in life, you need to 'learn' before you do something. Cognitive retention is key to mastering anything.
Your logic of diving in without thought or regard for yourself or others that will end up helping you is almost insulting. You will find that many of the longtime users/devs/veterans here enjoy helping people who take precautions and want to help themselves. But almost none of them/us really care to help those who jump blindly.
JMHO. Take it however you like. And you don't need to take it from me; just try and get help in here when you do something dumb and see how much help you get from senior members.

I don't know what you did there, but I just did a simple google search for Visionary and got "About 9,880,000 results (0.11 seconds)"
Maybe your google fu is weak or something..
On another note back on topic, I couldn't disagree more with your OP.. As a newb I think diving right in is the best thing to do to learn.. I Can read a wiki for hours about a phone, but that doesn't give you the same experience of 10 minutes hands on does..
My biggest suggestion to a newb to this **** is dont start with a high end device.. Buy a HTC Wizard or Excalibur off craigslist & play with & tweak them 1st.. Then maybe a g1 or something.. That way if you do **** up & brick your device your not toast..
IMHO there is no better way to learn something then to do it.. But also when you have problems, don't think your unique & that nobody has ever posted your question before, Search for it 1st & then only post asking for help if you cant find it..

I think I'll leave it in here, maybe even sticky it later
CB, while I can understand your frustration I believe your attitude could be seen as elitist.
I think that perhaps what we should be doing is trying to come up with a root cause solution that might work instead of telling people not to try something like rooting. As another poster implied, it's not that people shouldn't be rooting, but that they shouldn't be asking questions for which there are already answers.
This seems like the problem you're trying to address, not the problem of someone rooting their phone or not.
So let's put aside the discussion of how one learns and who has the right to root and focus on the issue of "inappropriate" posts.
Does that sound like a reasonable alternative?
Hopefully whatever comes out of this discussion could be used to improve the forum experience for everyone.
I should mention that I'm not really sure this thread should be in the dev section of the forum... Seems more like general discussion since the OP is more of an ideological opinion piece at this point.

Good lord, does anyone here actually have the time to go through 302.000 pages? Maybe I am the only one who has kids and a wife, but I know I don't have time to take a freaking computer programing course to teach myself how to use freaking cmnd lines. The crap I have seen on different forums that walk people through different rooting procedures on different phones acts as though everyone know WTF they are doing and/or has the time to spend hours a day learning. Guess what? Not everyone does. I spend hours a day teaching people the basics of how to use their phones and I have to give directions my grandmother could follow, is it to much to ask for detailed instruction that someone who has a very basic understanding of how to use these phones could follow? I don't think so. If you "seniors" could realize that you aren't cooler because you know what you are doing, and did the responsible thing and shared your knowledge without *****ing, moaning, and complaining about n00bs, you could help more n00bs become 'seniors' themselves and have more people out there able to help others.
It seems lately there has been alot of negativity towards people asking questions. There have been far too many replies to questions with people complaining about the question, and the complaint takes longer to post than the answer. If you don't want to answer someones question, don't open the thread!! This is supposed to be a friendly, helpful community. There will always be different levels of experience. There is not 1 person on this forum that has never experienced the panic factor when they thought they messed up their phone. Let's keep that in mind when someone asks a question without doing an extensive search first.
PS- You are not the phone police, who are you to say what someone should and shouldn't do with their phone?
Because at least 50% of posts asking for help have been answered multiple times... in multiple threads... by multiple people.
It gets annoying answering questions for people who really shouldn't be rooting phones to begin with... or who don't take time to do any research. Instead of taking the time to learn and read.
There was an excellent article the other day on android central... about rooting not always being the answer. I think alot of people should read it.

You don't need to root to enjoy android. And not everyone is. But alot of people have no idea what they are getting into... then come here and expect it to be fixed because they didn't research.

There was an excellent article the other day on android central... about rooting not always being the answer. I think alot of people should read it.
http://m.androidcentral.com/sometimes-root-isn’t-answer
You don't need to root to enjoy android. And not everyone is. But alot of people have no idea what they are getting into... then come here and expect it to be fixed because they didn't research.
Xda is a very helpful community... but everyone gets a little tired sometimes of answering the same questions.

Well yes that's true and all but the OP has a point when he said everyone has that panic attack and doesnt bother looking before posting I mean seriously when you think your really screwed over and may have just wasted $400 I know now I'd probably look first but when I first started out with my good ol G1 I flipped **** man! Its still bricked, sitting in a shelf somewhere. But I became more experienced as I moved from MT3G to MT4G so yea noobs to forums will always be an issue here I mean really in what forum aren't they? But its better to be supportive than criticize the new Guy with a broken phone by saying 'go look in this thread or this or this or this' I mean it just makes em feel bad. This is hypocritical since I know I have a few posts criticizing noons on here for posting but whatever it happens.

I agree with people generally needing to read up on as much as they can, especially when they're starting with android and/or rooting, but I will say there's something nice about having a chat about your particular situation. Reading an old thread often has useful information, but I could definitely see how a poster might need/want more specific, personalized advice that meets whatever issue they're having head-on. And often, I know I've been researching a particular issue, will find old threads on it, but still need additional clarification.
Obviously, people should be able to help themselves as much as possible - but in the end, that's why this is a forum, and not a tech blog, so that people CAN have discourse about common areas of interest and, hopefully, help one another out.

and you you keep on going and ignore the blatant warnings and crash and burn you shouldn't come here crying that you jacked something. On the same note we did not force you to do anything to your phone. No one from XDA held a Glock 19 and uttered the words " ROOT YOUR MUTHA EFFING PHONE OR WE KILL YOU".... you chose to do it willingly. And you should be man enough to say well i screwed my phone and i need to fix it.
9/10 people here will answer the question at hand. regardless of its "how do i root my phone", "how do i flash an image" or what ever else have you. but it someone has a low post count we will absolutely throw warnings out there. Android devices are mini Linux Computers. Now i do not claim to be a *UNIX guru, nor do i claim to be an Android guru, but i've seen enough people to brick their phones do routine things to know better......
I joined XDA because i was tired of the drama on Android Central and Cracberry's Android section. I wanted to find a good group of guys with similar interest, with similar phones and the exact same motto.
Someone once helped me with Android, and i feel i need to do the same.

and i found XDA, i lurked for a while and thought this a good place to be....
just because you see "negative comments" doesn't mean we don't have the best intent in our hearts. We just understand what can come with things are done incorrectly.
And to finish up to answer your question "where is the love", sometimes the best love one can show is tough love, it might not appear to be there now, but down the road.... well hind sight is always 20/20.
I've struggled conceptually countless times on these forums and people have been gracious enough to help me out, but the couple of times I thought I might have actually messed up my phone the first thought that entered my head wasn't "OH SH!T, let me write an incoherent post in the first forum i see and wait for my savior," it was "you idiot, you read about this possibility and now you have a worthless piece of electronics, maybe next time you won't be so stupid." I then researched my issue and, luckily, found a solution. You can learn how to do ANYTHING on the internet these days, that's the beauty of global communication. I just think most people get frustrated when someone asks another to take time out of their day to assist them when it is clear by their post that they didn't even take the time to help themselves, you know?
No one here has a problem with helping someone out; that is clear by sheer number of question posts that get answered daily- especially when people follow the forum guidelines and at least attempt to present their issue with as much detail as possible. It's the "SOMEONE HELP ME CLOCKWORK BROKE MY PHONE" posted in the development section that cause more trouble than anything.
Just like there were many threads complaining about people not answering questions or being hostile to newbs.
Here's the very basic explanation on how to not make an ass out of yourself and save us all from answering the same thing over and over again:
1. Read BEFORE you do something
2. Read and UNDERSTAND what you're about to do, again, BEFORE you do it.
3. If anything goes wrong - take a step back to think what you did, have a smoke/drink/whatever you do and relax. Search for an answer on similar situation, bet you money it has been answered before. If all fails, write up well-organized, informative post with all info (what you had, what you did and what happened) and be patient. 5 threads within 2 hrs will not get you any farther.
Good luck to all.
People dont mind helping or answering questions its just that no one honestly reads before posting. 9 out of 10 questions have answers within the forum.

Charle is 100% percent correct in his statement. In all honesty all the information for rooting, flashing recovery, custom roms are in the development section under the rom bible in the development section. The hard part has already been done for us.
I 100% agree that you should read ALOT before deciding to root. I read everything and watched videos for over a week before deciding to root.
The main point I was trying to make is that if you are sick of answering the same question, don't answer it. Just don't type anything. Hit the back button. There is no need for the rude remarks.
And Neidlinger I don't understand your post whatsoever. I don't understand it because you are one of the most knowledgable and helpful people on this forum. I don't know how many times you had to answer questions regarding bootloops with the wrong recovery, and every single time, you just answered the question. I honestly feel that more replies in the Q&A section should be just like yours.

I apologize, i'm at work and and got heated about something here and really shouldn't of posted that....and when i saw "where is the love", knowing how much i try to help people out around here... it just really bothered me....
you line made it sound like, if we have some one that pops and their very first post is "how do i root my phone" we should bow down and help them. With out throwing any warnings out. just here is how to do it and explain step by step how to.
First of all i will throw out warnings, i will never ward anyone away from doing what they want to do with their device. After all it's their money they are gambling with.
secondly when i bought my first android (mytouch3G) phone i bought with a stock recovery image and a working bootloader and i had to figure everything else from there. I had to learn quickly, if i wanted my phone up and running. So thanks for the props on being knowledgeable, but it was something i pretty much had to do. And people read on BGR, Android Central, or what ever popular bog site about XDA members did this and XDA members did that they jump on here and expect us to hold their hand. People have very well laid out threads on how do do certain things. The reason i treat others the way i do when it comes to problem solving is pretty simple. I had someone do the same for me. A higher up for T-Mobile that took the time and showed me how to do what i needed done. And that kinda what my idea of the Android community is. People helping people, for the fun and enjoyment of it.
with that being said....
With True_blue, Option94, faux123 not to mention another 1/2 dozen good developers and highly knowledgeable people that put things out in black and white, easy to understand English their should be no reason why so many of the same exact threads show up. You can type in just about any Android problem or request in Google and it'll lead you to XDA, and the thread in question. Just like the thread with the guy that just posted " how do i get 2.3, the nexus s variant on my phone"... step one should of been research in stead of starting a new thread....It's the laziness that bothers me. Like with programs like Super Manager and Root Explorer, people are to lazy to learn the ADB commands.... Clockwork ROM manager, people are to lazy to flash a recovery image. Or flashing a ROM go south... did you check the MD5sum? "nope, whats that"... it's just pure laziness that bothers me...
I understand 100% where you guys are coming from. I completely agree that things should be searched for first. I just think that the #1 priority should be helping the person out first, and then correcting. I just want it to be known that this is in no way at all coming from an experience that I had...I think my anger really started with that epidemic of E:/can't mount bs where everyone was like "hey idiot you can get into recovery, you aren't bricked." And now we know now that is not the case.

i totally agree with neidlinger on his points. I started with a G1, Mytouch 3g, mytouch slide, and now MT4G. I read everything i could get my hands on how to root and reread it again. If i still didn't understand something, then i would ask a question or search for it. Most of the posts i read nowadays, people want to be spoon-fed out of sheer laziness.
If the questions posed in these forums were even half as thought out as the comments in this thread, 95% of the snappy remarks would disappear. People want to know they are assisting someone who values that assistance. One or two sentences rarely creates that picture.
I'm just throwing this out there...So agree if you do or don't if you don't.
Personally, I'm tired of reading various ROM threads and seeing people cry or complain about features that are not included.
If you are using ROM "X" and want the features of ROM "Y", THEN FU**ING USE THE ROM THAT HAS THE FEATURES YOU WANT! Or just learn to code yourself.
There are plenty of tutorials on this site. Enough so, that one could literally build a ROM from scratch if they wanted to.
Granted, I'm no dev by any means...but I don't run around crying about features lost or features gained. Those of you that complain...you have the WORLD at your fingertips. USE THE SEARCH FEATURE! USE GOOGLE!
If I hurt your feelings by posting this, then good. You deserved it. That is all. My asshole moment is now over.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I have been on this site for 2 years. I never really posted much. I spent my time searching and reading the posts. I notice the new trend is to just ask a question without any searching then ***** about the answers you receive. Ok, now I'm done.
Maybe you should name this the Rant Thread, haha.

Agreed. Here's my rant...
Rant no. 1...I am so sick of ppl crying about scratched screens and broken phones. QUIT BEING CHEAP AND BUY SCREEN PROTECTORS AND PROTECTIVE CASES!!! These are smartphones that are easily broken or scratched. These are not the basic flip phone that are more durable. Use common sense and protect your investment! If you break your phone with protection, then you did something so destructive, there was no hope for it anyways.
Rant no. 2...I am so sick of ppl posting....help! I messed up my phone because I'm too lazy to read and research about how to do things PROPERLY! More times than not, if you do your due diligence and research, read, and follow basic instructions, you will find that you will have very little issues, if any. And how about ppl that cut corners and take short cuts to try and save time. Do this, and you will find yourself spending more time troubleshooting issues because you didn't do it properly. Research, read, and follow instructions. Its just as simple as that.

@Thremix... As far as the search thing is concerned, there really should not be any excuse at all. It's a big button that says "Search this Thread", or "Search this forum."
I can't speak for anyone but myself on this... But if you post in the wrong section, or what have you... I personally will tell you the answer if I know it. But in doing so, I also tell you it has already been posted, and provide the link to that thread. If it's in the wrong section, I'll answer you, and tell you it's in the wrong section.
As far as flaming people... Ignorance leads to that. And unfortunately, I am guilty of flaming people before. I'd be a liar if I said otherwise. And I too, am guilty of posting in the wrong section sometimes.
Sometimes the categories just aren't specific enough... For example: Themes and Apps... If it is your own work, I feel it should go in the Dev section. that's just me. If it's someone else's, then yes, in the Themes and Apps section.

Not to mention that that no flaming is the second rule.

Now my rant:

A real kicker for me is the inability to write a thread title. "Has anyone else noticed?" "Am I the only one?" "HELP" are examples of completely useless thread titles and doesn't explain what you're trying to convey at all.
I'm not exactly the most patient person in the world and my personality comes off fairly blunt but I'm glad to see that quite a few people are annoyed at exactly the same things I am. I'm fairly new to XDA as a whole but these kinds of things go on in pretty much every other forum I've been somewhat active on as well.

I'll typically answer it and give a link to another thread that's exactly the same question that I found in 5 seconds using search. Or just simply post a link to the thread and hope that people can figure it out by themselves (which usually isn't the case). But bloody hell, there's been so many "which rom is the best?" threads lately that I've been staying out of General and just sticking to a few select threads under the development section.

And the more substantive version of my rant...
I actually don't use search as much as I would like, as most of my posts are from the XDA app, not the full site. And there is a significant difference in functionality.
However, instead of posting a new thread for each random question that enters my brain, I'll at least thread-browse and subscribe, reading the entire thread.
The problem is that people just want to be spoon-fed the answers to problems that have, 9 out of 10 times, already been previously encountered...and solved.
They often times seem to have the attitude that XDA is free technical support, here to cater to them. Not. It takes time to answer questions, no one gets paid for it, and having to repeat the same answer to a fresh face multiple times per day gets a little tiresome.
Personally, I *prefer* having information prior to doing something I'm unsure about, it's when there's a lot of slightly different answers to the same question that tempts me to ask for clarification.
Still not enough to break my "0 new threads started," though. I saving that for a special occasion.

I can see this being the thread of the year. Whatever was on your mind but you didn't wanna be an asshole and post- let it out.
Edit- and this is what happens when companies like apple have the attitude -'every single one of our users is an utter moron, so we better spoon feed and restrict what they can do'- but they used a one click jailbreak so there super hackers. I'm kinda glad this phone isn't a simple one click root. It makes the users at least READ and research a little so they might start to understand a little what's going on
I'm the kind of person that when I do something, I don't want a step by step tutorial with exactly what buttons to push on the keyboard, I want to know why and what I'm doing when I'm doing it. That's just me though.

I don't think any of the newer phone forums have a Q&A section. I guess they figured that it was close enough to general. And it's not necessarily the question asking that gets annoying; no one minds helping. It's asking a question that has been asked 7 times in the last 4 pages. I just generally answer the questions, but I have seen it happen to some people so much (read: the MIUI thread lol) that it gets annoyingly redundant to answer the same question over....and over....and over....
CM7 Inspire 4G
I never realized that people were required to read a thread, let alone reply to it. If someone's thread starts with "I scratched my screen", why bother reading it if you are not interested. I think it is expected to see these type of posts in the General section. If all you want to do is read about developement, there is a section for that. I previously learned to hack the **** of my Windows phone thanks to some very helpful people here at XDA. Despite the fact that I haven't rooted my Inspire, I visit here daily because I have learned to do some other things and about a lot of other things. I'm new to Android. When someone posts about scratching their screen, some helpful guys will come in with recommendations about which brands of screen protectors and cases they use and the pros and cons of them. I like that. I wouldn't expect to see that in the developers section, but I'm ok with it in the General section. As far as the guys that get in trouble when rooting, searching is not as easy as one would assume, especially if in a panic state. When you already know what went wrong it's probably an easy search. For someone that is looking at non functional phone without knowing what the hell went wrong, it might not be as easy. I will probably eventually root, but not until I'm ready. Probably when AT&T refuses to release that Gingerbread upgrade. In the meantime, even reading about the problems noobs run into helps me. As far as what the op posted about different roms, I do agree. Try them out and if the perfect one is not out there for you, suck it up and pick one. I don't post much, but I do like to read and hate to see discouragement towards the noobs and posters that just post general issues or that get into trouble. I'm pretty sure we all started somewheres.

These developers put so much time into these roms and customizations to keep answering the same questions in a thread. I mean Cmon. I know every last one of them, with the kindness of their hearts, answer anyways. But I read every post and its the same damn questions, about the same damn topics and problems. If your writing the question,I'm sure u can read. So here we go.....
1. Open xda and on main page, click on more, then down to search
2. Type your search. Weather its a question, theme, kernel, rom, pornstar. Whatever just search.
3. If search is down (never been for me), then type in Google.com and type your search and then type "xda" afterwards. (Ex.Miui Inspire Xda). Now tell me what you see.
4. READ THE OP!!!! 95% of questions can be answered by reading the first 6 posts. Its fairly easy. And if you don't see it,then look through the pages. Or try methods 2&3.
....point is these developers provide great work with much pride. And I know they love to help and offer great support, but I know many MAY want a break from the spamming of the same crap every other post "what's the recommended radio" or "where can I download the kernel". I mean open your eyes. Even a blind folded, stuck in the basement, sleeping Stevie wonder can find the answers. Your is a android, meaning resources all over the place, put it to use!! Anti-Rant:
Guys, much as I agree with you, there's another side to the story.
Many of these dev threads can get to be thousands of posts long, dragging across hundreds or more pages. Take as an example threads on Capy's work where he has threads of hundreds of posts in two different sections (Inspire and DHD), and that's just one ROM in question, never mind if you don't know which ROM you want.
Then, there's the search function. Right. If you're a n00b, you don't necessarily know what terms to use because you don't know what the F you're talking about yet. And those of us here ranting about doing a search don't help when I've seen the term kernel spelled Karnel, Kernal, Karnal, Carnel, and many other variants.
What I'm getting at are four things, the first being the most important.
1) Devs must be clear in their documentation, and put thorough and explicit instructions in the first few posts. Many of what YOU think are stupid questions arise from unclear instructions. For example, I used the CWM 'factory reset' function before Capy posted the video, so I wasn't sure if I needed to wipe partitions individually.
2) Be sure you have "clean hands" when criticizing others. I've seen so much immature teenager 'chopspeak' here (y dont u try 2 wipe agn), misspellings, and other grammatical mistakes that we must be aware that those of us who have not been here for any amount of time have not acquired a knowledge base and don't know what terms to use or what to ask and how to ask it.
3) There are also off topic posts in every thread which add to the difficulty when you're trying to get to the meat of a problem. Have you always posted specifically on-topic information every time you post in a thread? I doubt it. Be mindful that if a new user is casually trying to come by information, reading through dozens of pages peppered with OT 'chat' can be daunting.
4) If you see a question being asked that was not specifically addressed in the first post, recommend to the dev that it be added to an FAQ that should be contained in the first couple posts.
Of course, if the instructions are clear, and a stupid and/or redundant question is asked, then the poster must be *****-slapped into submission.
Just my two cents. Let's be sure we're not contributing to the problems ourselves.
If the dumb asses at AT&T would quit jacking with Android, there would be a lot less of that here. There are too many noobs that are not going to take the time to properly learn, nor do they want to. They just want to quickly root so their hsupa will be enabled, they can sideload, they can remove AT&T crap, etc... Probably going to get worse when AT&T drags ass releasing the gingerbread update. Too bad there is no one click for the Inspire.

@bill, and the flip side to that is that maybe the person needs to read all 100 pages. I really don't have a lot of sympathy for people who say they don't have the time. we are all busy. it doesn't take that long to
skim. I spent a few days reading how to root before I did it and everything worked out. days, not minutes.

@Billy,bro idk if u just wanna rebel against the topic or not but its plain as day. Read and search it period. Maybe in one thread kernel is misspelled. Then scroll through the pages and ill certainly say you will find your word. And if it does say kernal, etc then search the dang thing till it works. Y'all have pity on these people that just can't do more than just look it up on their phone. And most the time the OP has all the information and if not on the first 5 posts, then ill be certain if they read to the first 20 posts, they will see the same related questions. I see it in almost every posting after the OP's. I'm not criticizing nor downing anyone,I'm simply saying that give these threads and forums a break. Ill bet you if you deleted every post that was a repost of another, more than half of the xda android, windows forums would be cut in half or more. Instead of asking same questions, state what u did and how you did it. Then the OP can see what step u went wrong. Instead of "I flashed the newer version over the older one, nothing works what do I do?" when clearly the OP states to wipe and through cwm. I work with ignorant people and lazy asses. If you own a Inspire and plan to root and hack, first learn to read. If not you will be bricked

I agree with the OP 100%. Over half the posts are from people who bought their first Android phone. Ran home jumped on Google to find out how to "root" because they heard about it. Jumped into it without reading anything. Then when something breaks they demand help. Well you should have read and read some more. Before I rooted I read about all the problems that happen, so if they did I knew what to do. I have been on this site for 2 years now and it is getting worse and worse.

I waited three weeks to root mine. I had to learn how to use command on windows through my phone. Then what the hell a gold card was. Then once I created my gc, I followed the video step by step. Then it was rooted. Especially don't ask questions about rooting the Inspire,go to YouTube and type "rooting HTC inspire 4g". Bam, your set. Darkside and to all of you thank you for realizing I'm not scoulding anyone just trying to help maintain order around here. That's all

So, your lucky... what if after your hours, and days, and weeks, and years of reading, something went wrong... you wouldnt ask for help?
I got my phone, went to youtube, asked a few questions here and was rooted with in the hour..
This is my first android phone, I come from the iphone if that means anything. I had a lot of jailbreaks under my belt, but rooting was not the same..
heres what I do...
I read (HELP ME JAILBREAK MY IPHONE) thread.. I have two options, click... or dont click... If all I'm gonna do is go in the thread and cry about a search bar.... I dont click!!!!! If I'm gonna help I'l click, and I dont cry about it.. my point? Don't click on threads you dont want to read!!!
Point is don't come into this thread and start your *****ing. If you would had READ MY POSTS I stated "instead of asking the same questions, why not state what you did and what happened". See your still not reading. Because in sure by 100% you will not be the only one with the issue(s). Exactly my point ..case settled

ok, you got me.. I didnt have the time to read through this whole thread.. this one is my bad, since it's only 2 pages...
but there are threads, with great information that have 200 pages... the trick is to find the right page!
it's simple bud, you dont HAVE to click on a thread you have already seen a 100 times. Or you can, and be helpful.. make the android world a better place. It works two fold... people can feel ok about asking even stupid questions such as the thread with the guy asking about the Thunderbolt on ATT!!!
and you build a community with help for eachother.. which in it self leaves the apple world in the dust... bunch of smug stuck ups, that walk around with thier eyes wide shut! lol I know... I was one of them!
This is turning into flaming. It will get close just like the other one.

If that question has been answered many times, it does get annoying. It doesn't take too much time just to search. Most people that have asked questions recently are too LAZY to look for the answer. There is a 99.9% chance that threads which were created this week were questions answer already many times. We are here help our fellow community members, not spoon feed them.

@Billy :if your having that hard of a time,do as I did with Adam and id10terrordfw..PM them asking a quick question that's more like "I did this and followed that and used recommended radio and everything but no go,what did I do wrong?" See difference between that then asking "how do I flash the radio that's recommended?" Or "how do I wipe in recovery?" Or "you need to fix this in next update." I mean come on. Stupidity always fails and makes u look like a idiot.
